Small minds, secret finds

Small minds, secret finds
Time to open up the blinds

Let me start off by telling you I’m an idea guy. And I don’t like to talk much about people and things. I once heard someone say: “Great minds talk about ideas. Mediocre minds talk about things. And small minds talk about people”. I took that to heart. And I hope you will, too. Because it’s powerful medicine for YOUR mind.
[powerpress}

Small minds, secret finds

Small minds borrow and steal ideas.

Ideas are words not spoken yet. And dreams not yet fulfilled. But they start the process. Close your eyes. And imagine your ideal set of circumstances for your life. Some people dream of lounging on the beach all day. Others long to travel. Maybe around the world in a yacht. Or on a never-ending trip through the back roads of America. Whatever you imagine for yourself, imagine it right now.

Now, what’s stopping you from achieving that dream? When you really get down to it, what’s holding down your ideas? I can tell you from my perspective I’m living out one of my lifelong desires right this minute. Ever since I was in high school, way back in medieval times, I dreamed of being a writer. And here I am with my own website. Writing my own articles. And even getting paid for my own professional writing service. If I live to be 100, I don’t want to stop. I don’t want to lounge on the beach or sail around the world.

Wait a minute. That’s not exactly what I mean.

Actually I’d love to lounge on a beach. Or travel more. But not as my ideal life. Doing those things would simply be a brief pause in my “real”life. And my “real” life is eternal. So, I know how important it is to realize ideas have consequences. Eternal ones.

So, don’t die. At least not before you’ve had the chance to express the full you. And not before you’ve had the chance to seal the right deal on your eternal destination. After you do, then go make the splash you’ve imagined yourself making. And don’t give up. Hope springs eternal to the dreamer who knows a future in paradise awaits.

While you’re still breathing, you can still make a difference; whether it’s in your life or the lives of those you touch. And always remember…There IS a Rhyme and Reason to life because God made you.

Stay tuned,

Spin Zone - where only certain opinions matter

Your ol’ buddy, Tone, is in a Spin Zone

When the media sends out a message with an obvious bias, that’s often called a spin. And when they dig in and really ramp it up, that’s called a spin zone. So, stick with me as I spin this out, and ask…Who do you think cares more about your life? And the life of your family? You? Or the government?

Hold on tight. You’re in a spin zone.

I bet you were able to answer my question much faster than I was able to ask it. You know who cares more. YOU! So, it’s crucial not to rely on the government for assistance of any kind. And we all need to work harder and smarter to see to our own prosperity. And we need to learn the difference between sharing and stealing. Huh?!

Yep.

And even if a majority says it’s OK to steal (tax) from me to give to someone else, that doesn’t make it right. When the government gives it a benevolent sounding name, they’re just using their own “putting lipstick on a pig” tactic. And keep this in mind. “The government” isn’t a spiritual entity. It’s made up of people. People who can’t even figure out how to keep water systems safe. So, why should they be trusted to distribute wealth fairly?

Don’t thirst for a bail out

Consider this: Ana Navas-Acien, MD, PhD, assistant professor and researcher at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University and her team of collaborators analyzed data from 788 adults age 20 and older. Their urine was tested for traces of this toxin. They found…

  • Participants with type 2 diabetes had a 26% higher arsenic level than people who did not have the disease.
  • Those with the highest levels of arsenic were more than three times as likely to have diabetes than those with the lowest levels. Drinking water can be contaminated with arsenic in some mining areas and in areas with inappropriate arsenic waste disposal. Also, air pollution can be an additional source of arsenic exposure in certain areas.

Imagine how much more efficient and effective our country would be if taxes were used to keep utilities infrastructure safe from pollutants and poisons. And if our tax dollars were used to keep bridges and roads safe, secure, and smooth. How about night lights shining? And a military with state-of-the-art equipment to defend us against all aggression. Personally I’d be glad to pay taxes for those things. And it could all be done for approximately 5% of each person’s earnings. Amazing huh?

But wait, I’m not done.

  • A government who takes my money and gives it to corporate idiots who’ve run their businesses into the ground? No.
  • A government who takes my money and gives it to bankers and insurance company owners who’ve squandered their assets? No.
  • A government who takes my money and gives it to people who won’t work, or others who spend it on abortions, or others who spend it on athletic shoes, or flat screen TV’s, or satellite radio and mp3 players for their cars. No, No, No, and No.

Those things cause envy, bitterness, and resentment. Like a famous TV doc says “how’s that workin’ for ya?”

This isn’t a partisan spin.

I’m not a Re(po)publican or a Demo(lish)crat. And I’m not a Liber(scare)ian or a blind and foolish anarchist. I’m just a small business owner. Am I’m tired of Robin Hood politicians. Because it’s wrong (and it always will be) to take from one to give to another.

That’s not charity. It’s thievery.

Your personal economy is where you should be focusing. And we all need to open our eyes to the lies and deception of thinking anyone in Washington D.C. gives a good hoot about how we feel. They only care about how much they can get away with. Their never-ending tax and spend agendas prove it year after year. And, to repeat, it’s not a partisan issue. Both major parties are completely guilty.

If you’re a small business owner, or an employee, I believe in you, the worker, the entrepreneur, the risk-taker, the dream builder. And I believe your spirit won’t be held down for long. Unless you just give in. Never, ever, ever, never, never, never, ever, ever, ever give up.

Ponder things when someone sings

Do you ever ponder things for no reason at all?

I remember driving my brand new little Ford sedan all around the countryside in Kansas. Way…waaaaayyyy back when. And I’d just keep my eyes peeled for a place to pull over and ponder things. And maybe even write about ’em. Sometimes important things. Many times just things of interest to probably no one in the world but me. I don’t recall a single time I envisioned myself one day writing and talking to an audience who’d read and listen through computers and smartphones. Nope, I’d just…

Ponder things when someone sings

Ponder things like this…

  • Do big surprises really come in small packages?
  • Can a tiny hole truly sink a great ship?
  • Will your face “stick that way”when you make an ugly face at your brother or sister?
  • Is it humanly possible to be “back in a flash”
  • Don’t you think wild horses really could tear you apart?

Now, put that pondering thing aside for second. And see if any of these ring a bell for you…

  • “I’m lovin’ it”
  • “Just do it”
  • “They’re grrrreat”
  • “More Saving”More Doing”
  • “Let’s Go Places”

Total Recall, Right?

I’m sure you can place a name brand with each of those tag lines. And you can probably say the name as fast as I can say the phrase. How cool is that? We’re only talking about two to four words, and yet they’re burned in your brain like hot coals. That’s because some clever content creator somewhere set his or her brain on fire to bring ’em to you.

“So what”, you say.

Well, ponder this…

How much could you reduce the “noise”if you work your business, marketing, and life from this angle? I’m not spouting off about how “less is more” because sometimes “more is more”. I’m talking about talking your talk in a straightforward way so you get to the point. You make your statement, and your audience is “hooked”. They can’t stop thinking about you and talking about you. Like a famous Martha would say””it’s a good thing”. Hey, that’s short too.

Maneuver Your Mindset

If you’re always thinking about marketing and branding and keywords and search engines and bottom lines and telling and selling”.

You’re doomed. Because you’re not thinking about what’s important.

People.

They’re important. And I don’t mean customers. Or mean clients, mean prospects, or mean leads. I mean real people. If you’re not thinking about people and how you can work to make their lives better, easier, more productive, and more fun, like I said”

“you’re doomed.

If you found yourself in the “doomed”category, don’t feel bad. We’ve all done the same thing to some degree. I know I have. Now, relax. There’s light at the end of this short tunnel. Let me shed some on you. Can I testify? Thank you brothers and sisters”

Manage The Mania

Here’s what I suggest. Get to the point. Keep it “short and sweet”. More of the sizzling, juicy ribeyes”and less of the empty calories bread. Look at the ingredients on a box of flavored crackers or chips. All those fillers are what make you fat and dull your senses. If you really want potato chips, look for a bag where the ingredients are…potatoes. Period. (maybe some sea salt and coconut oil) Your body will thank you.

And if you market and promote the same way, your people will thank you. With support, repeat business, and great word-of-mouth.

Why? Because you won’t muddy up their minds with information overload. Facts and figures they can’t or don’t understand. You’ll be talking to them. Not at them. And you’ll talk about what really matters”in a way they can remember and depend on. You’ll just do it and be lovin’ it. AND you’ll be grrrreat!

And that’s some of the things I’m pondering today.

Stay tuned,

Creative content writer - get out your highlighter

Creative Content Writer
Get out your highlighter

I’ve been told I’m a creative content writer. And I guess that’s true because I write and produce multimedia content for myself and for clients. That includes using images, words and music, video, podcasting, etc. But I didn’t start out as that kind of writer. I sort of wound up here because of awesome technology and the internet. Before it existed, I was a much more analog guy.

Even without a computer I was a creative content writer.

In fact, way back when my writing media of choice were a nineteen cent Bic pen and fifty cent spiral notebooks. And little did I know how writing all that prose and poetry would lead me here. Literally thousands of different poems. I gave lots and lots away…and I’ll never see them again.

There’s even a funny side story of how a couple of my notebooks disappeared. My younger brother sneaked a couple of them out to make a better grade in his English creative writing class. And he “misplaced them.” They resurfaced again, briefly, years later…only to disappear again before I was able to get them back. Because I love my brother, he’s still alive…and he DID get a better grade. But I sure wish I had those notebooks.

But…back to my creative content writer stuff…

Here’s a multiple choice question for you. When it comes to words and music, marketing, or anything YOU happen to be doing to make money, should you:

A. Write, re-write, and market consistently? or,

B. Create products to sell? or,

C. Focus on great content creation? or,

D. All of the above?

You probably already figured out there’s no wrong answer.

Because it’s all important.

And it goes either way. If you’re in the business of selling products, you either have to create them, buy them (to sell them), or endorse and promote somebody else’s. And you need to consistently tell as many people as possible that you have this stuff. So, you need to write your ads, your website content, radio spots, or words and music. And re-write them any time you can make improvements.

On the other hand, if you write for a living (like I do), you should be creating products to sell or will eventually sell. The good news is, anything you write can be a potential product. So, don’t throw anything away. Don’t forget; a series of articles on fitness can be turned into a book on the benefits of alternating your fitness regimen.

And that book could be recorded as an audiobook, and used for a podcast, and converted into a video. That’s why you need to keep your brain flowing freely with your eyes open to the endless possibilities.

But maybe you don’t write for a living.

Maybe you need or want some help with content. You could put my words and music to work on your business. But you should know, I only work with entrepreneurs and business owners I believe in and believe I can help. You’ll have to meet some high standards. If that’s cool with you, send me an email in the form.

Yeah, you’ll be on my list. And you’ll have to suffer through some “free stuff.” But then we can connect and see what we can see. Till then, remember life has Rhyme and Reason because God made you.

Fragmented marketing is a thing

Fragmented marketing is a real thing.

But I don’t care because I used to sing. For a living, as a matter of fact. Funny, but that headline and the next couple of lines even sound fragmented, but they’re not. I’ve got a point. Now, let’s see…where did I put it? Well, while I’m looking for it, let me share this little story with you. And hopefully it has something to do with fragmented marketing.

Fragmented marketing is a thing

Back in the day I couldn’t care less about fragmented marketing.

And I can’t say I’m terribly fond of the subject even now. But I digress. So, let me take you back in time to the days of full-time live music. Yes, that was a thing, too. A musician (well, a good one anyway) could work 5 to 7 days a week…on one job. (gig, as it’s known to musicians who didn’t want to think about jobs or work) At least you could work steady if you had a quality act.

I remember getting guys together, choosing and rehearsing songs, taking band pics, creating demo tapes, and making connections. We got a lot of our steady work through agents and agencies. And we booked a lot of our own dates once we got to know the owners and managers of venues. Then, we’d work hard to put on a good show and build a following. That meant finding ways to stay in touch with those people. And that was back before internet, email, and smartphones. But mailing postcards was still fairly cheap.

So, we created clever, physical newsletters and postcards and mailed ’em out each month. And if we had phone numbers instead of mailing addresses, we’d make calls to let the “fans” know where we’d be each week. A few fans turned into dozens. And dozens turned into hundreds. And hundreds turned into traveling full-time and playing venues all across America.

And just what in the world does a music career have to do with fragmented marketing?

Maybe you already picked up on it as you read my story. If not, notice how I said WE got guys together. WE chose songs and rehearsed. And WE did all those “marketing” chores…pictures, bookings, demo tapes, etc. Although we might have split up the work among the band, there weren’t a lot of outside “marketing specialists” getting our names up in lights.

You might not care a thing about a music career. But if you have services, products, or information you want and need to sell, you gotta tell people. Right? I mean, surely you don’t think you can be unknown and make money. Not likely.

Good thing you’ve got lots of choices out there these days. You can easily find amazing website designers, SEO experts, and pay-per-click experts all over the internet. Then there’s the radio advertising people and TV ad people. And let’s not forget (how could we) the ever present internet marketing specialists.

Because you can find all those services everywhere…or you could even jump on YouTube and learn how to do it yourself…you don’t need me. So, goodbye. All the best to you.

Oh wait…maybe you should think about this…

When you go hire a radio guy (who calls himself a business consultant) you’ll find out how easy it is to sign up for (and pay for) some ads. Of course, the TV guy (who also calls himself a business consultant) can get you hooked up with some “effective spots” on his local channel. And all those other “business consultants” will have no trouble showing you why their services will get you the results you’re looking for. I’m not knocking them. They’re just doing what they do. Lots of them are truly great at what they do.

But here’s the thing…

Those guys are sales people. They get paid to sell ad space and media. Not the best bang for YOUR business bucks. And when you choose too many specialists, your message might become a mixtape. Creative, but not necessarily consistent.

Remember, all those salespeople don’t get paid to consult with you and your business. They get paid to sell. And whether your ads make you and your business any money doesn’t change that.

So, avoid that kind of fragmented marketing like it’s a punk rocker on crack. Instead, get someone on your team. Someone who cares about helping you do great things. It might not be me. In fact, it’s probably not me. Because I only work with a select few clients anyway. But it should be someone you can talk to and be confident they’re listening.

And that’s another way to enjoy Rhyme and Reason in your life.

Stay tuned,

Gadget hacks and single tracks

Gadget hacks and single tracks

The first gadget hacks I remember doing were when I was a young kid. My brother and I used to record our voices…and silliness…on an Aiwa or Daiwa tape reel-to-reel recorder we got for Christmas one year. And that might have been a Christmas that helped shape the course of my creative life.

Gadget hacks in the days of cap guns.

Combine a sleep-deprived night with a bevy of boxes and bouquets under a tree with trimmings and lights…and what do you have? Yeah, an excited boy or girl who can’t wait to see if they got that Xbox or iPad or new laser tag set.

When I was growing up, the BB gun and chatty dolls were possibilities. But the Xbox, iPad, and laser tag would have only been found in the imagination. Maybe as a science fiction TV show. And the most high tech gift I remember getting was a do-it-yourself diode transistor radiokit. My brother and I marveled, for hours and hours, at how something we could build ourselves would transmit radio stations from far away places.

But, wait! I remember a very special gift one year. My brother and I got a  portable reel-to-reel recorder. If I remember correctly it was an Aiwa or Daiwa model…similar to the one in the picture.

Boys being boys we couldn’t just hit the record button and do plain ol’ boring voice recordings. No, we had to do things like put our finger on the spool to slow it down during the recording…then laugh at our chipmunk voices in the playback.

This was our first peek into the wonderful world of recording…

…way before walkmans and way, way before iPods and iPhones and iPads.

But, in this day of gadgetry within the reach of just about anyone, I think the mystique of electronic experimentation is diminished. Back then we had to “see what it can do”. Nowadays we just expect it to do fantastic stuff with the tap of a thumb or finger.

Don’t get me wrong…I like it both ways. And that’s why I’d better quit writing this blog post on my MacBook. Because I gotta go see what everybody can get me, for Christmas, on Amazon this year.

Stay tuned,

Expression depression Rhyme and Reason Episode 314

Expression Depression Everything Nothing

In this episode of Rhyme and Reason, I talk about nonsensical clichés and perspectives on community. Expression, depression, everything, and nothing won’t be popular with successful entrepreneurs. Because what you say means more than a cliché I know it’s important to say.

Expression depression Rhyme and Reason Episode 314

Expression depression can be a avoided.

Words mean things. And ideas have consequences. That’s why I took on these seemingly insignificant topics. It’s vitally important to use words with more encouragement, inspiration, and true meaning. You’re important to God. So, you’re important to me. And I want to point out little things sometimes, too. Not just the big things. If you continue to parrot what motivational speakers blurt out, that’s no cause for going to hell. But it won’t help you in the long run either. In fact, it just becomes another…

Cliché (song is in the podcast)

We want the answers to all of our questions, and
We want the world in the palm of our hand
We want to rise up; rise up and conquer
Let all the world know just where we stand

We want to live in a fat-free environment, and
We want to make sure the ozone is intact,
And so we watch all those service commercials, and
It’s just so easy to sit back and react.

Is it just melodrama…for me to feel this way?
I wonder…is it just me,
Or does it all sound so cliché?
Does it sound that way…so cliché?

We lend our money to so many nations, and
Still we struggle to pay off our own debt.
We hope for world peace and ending the hunger,
But will we ever do what no one has done yet?

We train ourselves and prepare for the future, but
Each day the future takes on a new look.
We might do better to look inside our own hearts, and
We might discover it’s not in some law book!

Is it just melodrama for me to feel this way?
I wonder…is it just me, or does it all sound so cliché?
Does it sound that way…so cliché?

Hocus pocus.jpg

Hocus Pocus”Now where’d I put my focus?

Do you think successful people just wake up, say hocus pocus, and start their day focused? Hardly. They’re not born that way either. Well, they might be born with the “marketing gene”or the “dynamic salesperson gene”. But they’re not focused simply by existing.

Hocus pocus

So, don’t think of staying focused as something you’ll do when you get to a higher level of business success. And don’t think it’ll happen when you wave the magic wand of someone else’s strategies over your head.

You can sharpen your focus with a few easy steps…no hocus pocus required.

The steps are so easy you might think there’s no way they could work. But they do. You just have to make them part of your everyday life. And it’s easy because it’s what you should be doing even if you don’t own or don’t even want to own a business. Ready to see what they are? Good. Here you go…

Step 1.

Wake up, but don’t get right up. Take a moment to acknowledge how fortunate you are to have another day to conquer. And do this before you even get dressed or have breakfast or anything else.

Step 2.

Eat a sensible breakfast. Make it the kind your grandparents or great-grandparents used to make. But don’t wast time debating what’s “sensible”. You know what it is”even if it’s way down inside you. You know.

Step 3.

Be sure and get plenty of water into your body. It’s one of the two best ways to oxygenate your blood. And if there’s plenty of oxygen in your blood, there’s plenty going to your brain. Don’t worry about the 8 glasses a day thing. Just be consistent. Have a drink right now, in fact.

Step 4.

This one is going to sound silly, but”smile. And I predict you’ll be pleasantly surprised what smiling more will do for you. It might even rub off on others. But, for now, focus on you. (hey there’s that focus thing again) Here’s a cool side benefit. You use more muscles in your face when you smile. And when you use more muscles, you burn more calories. Of course you know when you burn more calories, you stay leaner. And when you stay leaner you like yourself better. Then, when you like yourself better, you stay more focused. And when you’re more focused, you smile more. Now, that’s what I call a “circle of life.”

Step 5.

Don’t try to stay busy. Take action. There’s a huge difference. And you could clean off your desk all day and never sign that big client. But, hey…at least you’d look busy. Right? Or you could take at least one action to actually get the client. And guess what? If you can deliver what your clients or customers want, they won’t even care if your desk is messy.

Step 6.  Enjoy the moment.

Remember you only have NOW. Yesterday’s gone forever. And tomorrow never actually gets here. NOW is all you really have. So enjoy it. Make the most of it. And get something done, NOW. It stands for “no other way”.

Step 7.

Get plenty of sleep. Your body and your mind have to recuperate from the day. And no matter who you are; when you don’t get enough rest, it Will catch up with you. Maybe not today. Maybe not even tomorrow. But at some point your focus just won’t be there when you need it. And all the hocus pocus in the (magic) world won’t get your body to respond the way you want.

I know from experience how important rest is. Because I’ve been unable to breathe properly for almost two years. Exposure to drywall dust particles, mold, and harsh chemicals caused me to sleep no more than 2-4 hours a night for months. And I’m still struggling with this issues months and months later. So, I can tell you…stay healthy and get plenty of sleep.

OK”there’s seven easy steps to a better, more focused YOU. They don’t require years of schooling, mentoring, or yelling in your face from a drill sargeant. So, just get up and do “˜em everyday. You’ll thank me later.

Stay tuned,

Words and music for business from yours truly, the Whizness

A little horn blowing about why
my words and music are good for business

You’ll never have a hard time finding agencies, PR people, and other “creative” types who can put together a really cool advertising campaign. They’ve been around as long as business, and they know how to construct slick, polished ads for you. The trouble is, your competitor just might be doing the same thing. Watch TV or listen to the radio for just a little while and see. Those are reasons why personalized words and music are good for business. But of course I’d say that…right?

Many business owners are on the wide path to business destruction. Or at least business doldrums. They’d rather rely on social media and the so-called “tried and true” advertising/marketing methods. Why pay for a “song” when you can invest in more infographs, case studies, white papers, and cartoon videos? Right? Wrong!

Words and music are good for business because you remember them.

Ad after ad uses humor, or fast talk, or lots of images, or puppies, or cute babies. You get the idea. You gotta give your prospective customer or client the product or information they’re looking for. And you gotta talk to them directly. That simple approach makes you stand out. So pictures, puppies, and babies might be just the ticket if that’s your market. But you might not stand out.

Word and music can do this for you. So; here are 7 reasons why a solo freelance writer, with that combination of skills, is good for business (not in order of importance):

  1. More up-close-and-personal, one on one business relationship
  2. A direct stake in your success; your results impact the writer’s success
  3. Deeper research for more meaningful impact
  4. Knows the “lay of the land” or how to layout the words to read and follow better
  5. Multiple strategies from one source
  6. Meeting deadlines…and
  7. Writes your story to sell, not just to talk

Now, if your business and marketing are going great, forget everything I just said. But if they’re not going as well as you’d like, I suggest you hire someone who knows how to write. (like me) But also you should hire someone who actually wants you to succeed. Get my words and music for your business or website, and you’ll get something you can only get with me. Me.

Writer block is avoidable

I’m not sure, but I don’t think
I’ve ever suffered from writer block.

There have been times when I didn’t write as much as others. But I’ve never had an actual writer block. Instead, what happens to me is what I call “writer flood”. My head gets flooded with ideas. Ideas for books, for pictures, for characters, for music and lyrics to go along with stories, for…etc. etc. etc. And sometimes the flood can dam up the works and mimic a writer block. But there are some pretty cool ways to unplug the dam.

A lot of writers and marketers talk about “speed writing” or “freeform writing” or several other names for it. And they suggest you sit down and start writing everything that comes into your head. Even if it’s just to say something like “this is boring” 100 times. They say “write…don’t edit”. Now, I can see merit to this because it at least gets you and the paper or blank screen working together.

But…I’ve been writing for decades, and I’ve always edited my writing in my head. And it’s the absolute write way to write. FOR ME. I love the wonderful feeling of words swirling around in my head. Then, I see them in my mind’s eye and start plucking them down like ripe apples. Maybe it’s because most of my writing life has been in the arena of songwriting. But, whatever it is, even as I’m writing this very blog post, I’m simply word processing in my head. Then I type it out, see if I misspelled anything and move on to the next sentence or paragraph.

I don’t recommend this method to relieve writer block for everyone.

But I don’t recommend against it either. The main thing is…find YOUR writing style. The writing style YOUR head and your hands like. Then set them free.

One last note on that…I believe the longer you live the easier this style of writing is. And that’s because you have more and more of life’s experience living in your head. Again…set them free.

Now, maybe you don’t know me well enough to buy something from me, yet. Ok, let’s change that. Get to know more about me and my worldview. Join the growing body of believers who’ve signed up for the Tony’s Daily Devotional . And bask in daily, delightful flashes of light from the power of God’s love.

Fit or Fat? - Change the you you're looking at.

Fit Or Fat
What are you looking at?

Have you had a night where you just couldn’t sleep? So you got up, went into the living room, turned on the TV, laid on the couch, and watched infomercials. Right? I mean; unless you have some premium movie channel (which we don’t because the description is an oxymoron) you won’t get much on TV at 2:00 a.m. Have you ever noticed how many of those infomercials talk about fit or fat products? It’s a gigantimongous industry.

Fit or Fat? - Change the you you're looking at.

Fit or fat isn’t just in the eyes of the beholder.

People want to look like models, never get sick, and live forever…or at least a really long time. And they want to look the same until they die. As a culture we’re overweight, overfed, undernourished, out of shape, lacking hope, and just plain burnt out. That’s a shame. But the worst part is…we think the solution must be complicated. We think it must be in the right combination of diet products, or vitamins, or exercise gurus.

(obnoxious buzzer sound inserted here) Wrong!

It’s none of those things. And it’s not complicated. Oh sure, you can make it complicated. And if you need to wrap your brain around some big words like phytonutrients or hyluronic or mass-spectrographic-isotonic-double-biothermal-diophonoscope, then let’s get to it. But if you prefer to keep it super simple (the K.I.S.S. formula) I’ve got good news for you. It really is simple.

Here’s what causes 99% of obesity and other overweight conditions. A couple of old-fashioned word describe it…gluttony and slothfulness. I know…I know…it sounds so harsh. But it’s true.

Now, those words just mean you’re putting too much in and you’re not burning enough off.

I’ve got a “super simple” acronym to help you keep your fit or fat dilemma in perspective. I’ll share it with you in just a minute.

But first, I want to also talk about a couple of the other related potential problems. For example, you might not realize how food is only one of the culprits in the battle of the bulges.

That’s right…much of the fluids you put into your body dramatically add to the weight problems. Right about now you’re thinking…OK, he’s gonna tell me to stop drinking colas. Well, actually I’m not. Sure; it would be a great idea for you to stop drinking them altogether, but even if you can reduce your intake, you can see excellent results. However; there’s a ton of evidence that shows how you ought to completely stop drinking diet drinks. Unless you enjoy ingesting the equivalent of rat poison anyway.

Wow…could that possibly be true?

Don’t take my word for it. I’m just a guy who reads about this stuff, and the evidence is startling and massive. Just “Google” the term “diet drinks” or “diet drinks” + health. It only stands to reason when you take something natural, like sugar, and replace it with “flavorings” like aspartame and others, something’s gotta give. And it’s usually the notches in your belt. It can also be lesions on your brain, though, and you really don’t want those.

Well, that’s enough to process right now. Believe me when I tell you, if you’re overweight, in almost every case…it’s your fault. And no “diet” is gonna help without you wrapping your mind around that. And taking responsibility for your own health. In fact, in almost all cases, you don’t need a diet. You need a healthy lifestyle. Of course, I’m not a doctor, and I don’t play one on TV. I’m just a guy who cares about my fellow human beings.

Let’s enjoy the music, art, and other beauty this world has to offer, and here’s how…stay well and live longer. One final point…don’t focus so much on your body that you forget your soul. The apostle Paul wrote, “for bodily exercise profits a little...” No matter how well you treat yourself in this life, you will come to an end. But your soul will go on forever. So “godliness” is more important.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I said I’d give you a simple acronym to help you with the fit or fat dilemma. It’s Y.E.S. M.A.M. And it stands for  “you eat sensibly & move around more”

And never forget…there IS a rhyme and reason to life because God made you.

The Lord sustains me in a way anyone can see.

Even in this troubled world the Lord sustains me

I know I’m not alone when it comes to having troubles in this world. In fact, no one on Earth escapes trouble. And there are billions of people who are far worse off than me. Most of them don’t even realize just how much worse off. So, I have a distinct advantage over them. Because I know the Lord sustains me through this life into the next.

The Lord sustains me in a way anyone can see.

The Lord sustains me just like He sustains kings.

One king, in particular, King David wrote a song (aka Psalm) about how God sustained him. He said, “I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around.” And just in case you think you’ve got massive troubles, King David’s own son was trying to kill him. I know that’s might be a growing possibility here in America…and the world…but David had to also deal with an army coming after him.

And so, as he faced some serious life challenges, David cried out to God. He knew where his Shield was. Where true Glory lives. And just by using his voice, David’s confidence grew. He was completely sure God heard him from His “holy hill.”

I’m confident the Lord sustains me, too. I believe it’s plain for anyone to see. I’m still here. And I’m still able to think up new ways to write about my Creator. I haven’t lived a life worthy of God’s grace. No one has. In spite of that, He’s seen fit to give me time and tools to write and sing about Him. He doesn’t force me to use those tools and my time to write about Him. And that’s one of the many reasons I hope to continue for a long time to come.

I know, since the Lord sustains me, He’ll sustain you, too. Why not go ahead and take Him up on His offer of eternal life. What have you got to lose? Besides your soul forever…

Fail forward is not inspirational

From this moment forward
stop saying fail forward.

Lots of well-meaning people are using the expression, “fail forward”. And it makes me cringe every time I hear it. In fact, I’m actually pretty darn sick of hearing it. Especially from people I like and/or respect. I wish they’d stop using that nonsensical phrase and get back to much more appropriate words. And I know it’s important to pick your battles wisely. And I realize this isn’t the wisest battle I could pick. But this stuff is rearing its ugly head so much lately I’ve just gotta throw in my million dollars perspective.

Fail forward is wrong because it has the word “fail” in it.

Merriam Webster…that’s a well-known dictionary…defines the word “fail” like this:
1. a: to lose strength
b: to fade or die away
c: to stop functioning normally

2. a: to fall short
b: to be or become absent or inadequate
c: to be unsuccessful
d: to become bankrupt or insolvent

Now, be honest with me. Do any of those definitions sound like something you want to do fast and often? I hope not. Don’t misunderstand me. It’s not a crime or a sin to lose strength or fade/die away or stop functioning normally. It’s normal and expected to fall short in your life. Many times in fact. You shouldn’t be concerned if you find yourself absent or inadequate from time to time. And even billionaires have experienced bankruptcy, insolvency, and unsuccessful ventures. But here’s the key point…

Don’t “embrace failure” or be glad to “fail forward” or “fail fast and fail often”

Certainly you should expect obstacles. And you should expect to discover some you won’t be able to overcome. Those will make you stumble. Some might set you back a few steps Or make you change your approach. But you ONLY “fail” when you stop. When you let the obstacles beat you. You only fail when you give up. When you throw in the proverbial towel and head for the couch and TV life.

My recommendation is to go back to the words and phrases with true power to motivate. I’m a man, so I particularly like the more manly examples. Like: “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Or how about these lyrics from the song “Pick Yourself Up”…

“Work like a soul inspired,
Till the battle of the day is won.
You may be sick and tired,
But you’ll be a man, my son!”

Here’s some more of the good stuff…

Mister Light Bulb, Thomas Edison, agreed with me about the giving up definition of failure: “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” ~ Thomas A. Edison

Even Christopher Robin had this to say to Pooh: “Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” ~ A.A.Milne – Inspiration without the word, “fail.”

I know I’m gonna continue to hear this fail forward nonsense. Maybe for the rest of my entrepreneurial life. But I’ll never fall for its alliterative-flow-from-the-mouth mass appeal. And I would consider it a failure to do so.

And if you’ve just gotta have something quick and easy to say and remember, try these:

Fight Forward
Positive Persistence
Keep Pressing Toward the Prize

Community is everything and might end up being nothing

“Community is everything”
The message is everywhere

I just listened to another podcast, from a guy I respect, where a big part of the message was “community is everything.”And while I certainly get what he’s talking about…and it makes sense…I also know something he might not have considered.

Community is everything and might end up being nothing

A big community is everything until it’s not.

Building a huge community, these days, isn’t as difficult as it was in the days before digital technology and social media. And as long as you provide relevant information (or entertainment) to an interested audience, the possibilities are virtually unlimited. But mass appeal requires a key component I’m not willing to plug into my Rhyme and Reason Empire…

Compromise.

My Dad used to illustrate a compromise between good and bad with his two hands. One hand he held up near his eyes. And he held the other hand near his waist. Then he’d say, “This hand, up here, is good. And this hand, down here, is bad. Now, let’s say they have to compromise. So, what does the good hand have to do in order for the bad hand to be raised up a little in compromise? That’s right. The good hand has to be lowered a little.”

And with that simple illustration, even as a boy, I realized you should never compromise what’s true and right.

God never compromises on what’s true and right.

And He knows it won’t build the biggest community. In fact, He says the biggest community will have nothing to do with Him. What?! Can that be right? I mean…He’s God. If anyone could build humanity’s biggest community, it would be Him…right?

Nope.

Most of the people who believe building the biggest community is everything will ultimately find themselves in the biggest community. And membership is forever. No cancellations. No exits.

So, I understand how and why some well-meaning people believe it’s crucial to build as big a community as possible. And on an extremely temporary level that’s true. But, for Christians who know Job One is rightly dividing the Word of Truth and sharing it with the world, it requires too much compromise.

I’ve certainly been guilty of compromising God’s message with sugar-coated and disguised lyrics in some of my songs. But as I’ve gotten much closer to the end of my time here on Earth, I’ve realized the futility of that strategy. It’s not much of a strategy when you don’t highlight the most powerful community building tool there is. God’s Word.

Helping as many people as possible get into God’s eternal community is everything worth anything. I hope and pray I’m an effective voice for that purpose.

And, as always, remember: Life has Rhyme and Reason because God made you.

Big shot guess what - you're not so hot

Guess what, big shot…

You’re not “all that.” If you start thinking more of yourself than you should, you’re attempting to walk on water. And that won’t go well for you. In fact, God in Heaven laughs at you. What?! I know, I know. It doesn’t sound like the God you’ve heard about…right? But the one, true, living, loving God of all creation laughs at any earthly wannabe big shot.

Big shot guess what - you're not so hot

Why does God laugh at big shots?

Expiration dates. No one has a specific time to die. But every person who’s born on earth does eventually die. So, it’s laughable that anyone would ever think they could be in charge for more than a little while. In other words, God sees (and knows) the futility of all the men who have ever plotted such things. He watched all the generations come and go. And God inspired King David to write about the only One who’ll ever rule the world.

The whole world will belong to Jesus.

So, it’s important to understand where you stand…right now…and forever. Would you rather try to be “king of the world” and never really succeed? Or would you rather serve your loving Creator who made the world? And before you answer, consider this…serving doesn’t mean being a tormented slave. Serving is a good thing when it’s done with love for someone else. And here’s a key point…

Jesus is your Creator, yet He came to Earth as a man and served every one of us. So, He leads by example.

Give up your tough guy or tough girl notion.

You’re really not all that. You WILL expire one day. And when that happens, don’t find yourself in hell with these words (by Billy Joel) echoing in your head…

“Because you had to be a big shot, didn’t you
You had to open up your mouth
You had to be a big shot, didn’t you
All your friends were so knocked out
You had to have the last word, last night
You know what everything’s about…”

Where do you walk stand sit?

Walk Stand Sit

When I was 13 years old, I prayed with my Grandmother and chose eternal life with God. And from that moment on, my life has been one perfect day after another. That’s how it is when you choose to walk stand sit in the way of the righteous. And turn your back on the ungodly. Are you still with me? Some of the people who’ve known me through the years since my 13th birthday would probably beg to differ. Here’s why…

I didn’t always walk stand sit in the way of the righteous.

“Gasp! Can that be true?!”

Yes. In my many years as a professional musician I didn’t always lead the righteous life. I never did drugs, not even marijuana, and I’m grateful to God for that. But I did things I shouldn’t have done. That’s right…I was the musician who made bad decisions. Fortunately for me, I had chosen Jesus as my savior when I was young. Because He never let go of me even when I was stupid.

Yeah, choosing eternal life with God doesn’t immediately transform you into a sinless, perfect person. In fact, sometimes things get more difficult. And sometimes even the ones who love Jesus…sin. Of course, by “sometimes” I mean…a lot of times. Humans are so broken and selfish. So much so many don’t even realize how broken and selfish they are. That’s where being a Christian helps. At least we have a guidebook and a standard we can depend on. And we have HOPE.

I can’t even imagine how difficult this world is for people who don’t have the hope of eternal life.

So, you might be wondering why I say “walk stand sit” and why I don’t use commas. It’s for effect. To emphasize physical positions. And to illustrate what King David wrote about in Psalm 1 in the Bible. He said…

“Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful”

And here’s how I put it…

Where do you walk stand sit?
There’s a righteous way to see it.
It can save your soul and free it.
Where do you walk stand sit?

You can be like a tree.
Rivers of water flowing free,
Nurturing fruit for all to see.
You can be like a tree.

Just know that it’s your choice.
You can choose life and rejoice,
Or a place you’ll have no voice.
Just know that it’s your choice.

Stay tuned,

A new tune and thankfulness

Sharing a new tune and thankfulness
on this episode of Rhyme and Reason

I love when I first finish a new tune. There’s something magical and rewarding about being able to listen to a recording of what used to only be in my head. It must be, on a much smaller scale, how God felt, during the six days of creation. You can read, in Genesis, where God “saw that it was good“. In fact, when He finished creating, He saw everything that He had made and said it was “very good.” Now, I believe what I’m sharing with you, today, is very good, too. Not compared to God’s creation. But very good in human terms anyway.

A new tune and thankfulness

A new tune…

You can see, hear, and watch the lyrics to “Catch The Moon” (the song included in this episode) in a previous blog post HERE. Or you can just give it a listen in this episode of Rhyme and Reason. Podcast episodes can be found in places like Apple iTunes podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Player.fm, TuneIn Radio, Spotify, and others.

Thankfulness…

And you can read the thankfulness rhymes HERE, in case you’d rather not tune in to Rhyme and Reason (and why wouldn’t you?). If you have some things you’re thankful for, share ’em in the comments. Like I said in the podcast, if nothing else, we all have another day  of life to be thankful for. Because you’re still here, you still can do things. Make a difference. Change the course of your eternal destiny. You know…little things like that.

Till next time, remember…there IS a Rhyme and Reason to life because…God made you.

Invisible song machines - it's a metaphor

Invisible Song Machines

My songs are beginning to fade away. No, they’re not going away. Just fading away. I’m taking them out of the invisible song machines. And I’m putting them back into physical places. Places where they can be seen and held. Like in the good ol’ days of records, tapes, and CD’s. This digital world has some cool advantages. But sharing my musical projects ain’t one of them.

This isn’t some sort of rant or anything like that. I understand how well the online world works for so many businesses and endeavors. But the “free” mentality, when it comes to music, puts a serious damper on songwriters and music creators. So, while my “fix” for this might not be the popular one, I’m confident it’s the right way to go.

And that’s why my songs are beginning to fade away. I took a bunch of my song videos off my YouTube channel today. I’ve made the free versions unavailable from here on my website, too. Because if my music only has a digital “free” value to you, you’re probably not my audience anyway. The good news, though, is I’ll be doing some fun stuff to make songs available in other ways. Not gonna tell you what that is until I get more of it going. So, until then, thanks for understanding. And thanks for your support.

Invisible Song Machines

The times will come in everyone’s life
When changes have to occur.
The reasons could be obvious, or
They might even be a blur.
One of those times is happening now
It’s somewhere behind the scenes…
Where the melodies quickly become
Invisible song machines.
Value is lost down deep in a world
Increasingly wanting “free.”
So, I’m moving my music around
To places listeners can see.
Places where I think they’ll connect
With those who connect with me.
If you believe I’ve got it all wrong
Then certainly, by all means,
Continue to get your free songs from
Invisible song machines.

Sing with the understanding Paul wrote about

I pray I sing with the understanding

What am I talking about? The understanding of what I’m singing about. And making sure my message is understandable. When I sing with the understanding that no one wants to listen to garbled messages in secret tongues, the message has a chance of getting through. Here’s why it matters…

Sing with the understanding Paul wrote about

People can hear when I sing with the understanding Paul wrote about.

And Paul also wrote “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”So, if I want to use my voice, my singing, my songs to help people have faith in God, I need them to be able to understand. And that means skipping the whole “speaking in tongues”thing.

In this dispensation of the mystery, which is Grace to the whole world, you don’t need to be a high priest to talk to God. You don’t need to (and shouldn’t) focus on “special gifts”. Because you have God’s Word. The Bible. And it’s not so difficult to understand when you tune in to the actual story. It’s an amazing historical journey through about the first 4000 years of our existence. And even some predictions (aka prophecy) into our future.

I’ve been fortunate to discover some valuable insights into an actual plot twist in the story of the Bible. It’s what helps me to sing with the understanding Paul mentioned in his letter to the Romans. But the twist is easy to overlook when you insist on blending two gospels into one. And so many Christians don’t even like to hear me say something like that.

I promise…it’s not blasphemy.

So, if you’re a Christian, I encourage you to look more closely at Paul’s letters. You might uncover a mystery solved. And when you do, don’t be surprised if you find yourself singing out loud with the understanding, too.
It’s great…

Freedom

Faith working through love…
Let’s praise God for our liberty…
Christ paid off our debt…
Only in Him are we truly free.

Love leads into joy…
Law leads back into slavery…
God gave us The Way.
Just believe, and we’re truly free.

Freedom from the law that kills,
And freedom with our own free wills,
Freedom from the world of sin…
Just let Jesus in, let the joy begin
Share a hopeful grin, with the Lord “We Win”!
Praise God for what we can become
With our freedom.

What law couldn’t do
Jesus did with finality.
He rose up from the dead
And promised the same life for you and me.

So we have…

Chorus…instrumental…chorus twice

Are you thankful for another day?

With my simple words I say
I’m thankful for another day

I hope you woke up this morning thankful for another day. I did. And no matter what your circumstances are, you have many reasons to be thankful. Not the least of which is another day of life. Another day to recognize (or discover) how much your Creator loves you. And guess what? You didn’t earn that love. Someone else did.

Are you thankful for another day?

I’m thankful for another day to be able to share God’s love.

Most of the world doesn’t want to hear people like me talk about God. After all, it’s us pesky Christians who keep talking about “one way” to Heaven. We’re so judgmental. So narrow-minded. And we’ve got all these rules and regulations to follow in order to join our “exclusive club”.

But here’s the truth about those “rules and regulations”. There’s only one rule you need to follow in order to be included in Heaven. Believe and trust in Jesus. That’s it. You should follow the Ten Commandments. But even if you don’t, and yet you still believe and trust in Jesus, you can live forever with Him. Does that sound like a lot of rules and regulations to you?

When you dip your toes into the Word of God (the Bible) and discover what it actually says, you’ll be amazed at the depth of God’s love. There’s no bottom or end to His love. And you haven’t lived a life worthy of that love. Only one person ever lived a life worthy of that love. Jesus. And He loved you so much (in spite of all the ways you’ve hurt yourself and others) He became a man and died for you. And me.

Like I said…do yourself a favor and take a sneak peek into God’s Word. Don’t take the word of anyone else. I don’t care how much they appear to be righteous. Don’t take their word for it. And don’t take my word for it. It’s only God’s word that counts. Open your heart and soak it in. Start today. Then, maybe you’ll say you’re thankful for another day, too.

I’m Thankful For

A wonder-filled life,
A beautiful wife,
And for another day.

A musical brain,
And each new refrain,
And for another day.

A sky full of birds,
A page full of words,
And for another day.

A mountain to climb,
A line I can rhyme,
And for another day.

A friend I can trust,
A healthy pie crust,
And for another day.

A breath I can take,
A pardoned mistake,
And for another day.

A life I can live,
And the One who can give
Me another day.

Stay tuned,
