Pride and self promotion don't have to cause commotion

Pride and self-promotion can lead to the  pursuit of likes, followers, or other forms of validation. And even Christians can start  to prioritize self-glorification over humility, the opposite of biblical teachings on servanthood and modesty.

So, avoid all social media and you’ll avoid pride and self promotion.

There’s your solution. I done did all the research for ya. No need to thank me. But you’re welcome.

Of course, you might be thinking,” Wait a minute. I have a solo business to run. And I don’t have a budget to hire an advertising agency or publicist or some other kind of company to promote my business. So I have to self promote.”

Yeah, you might be thinking that. And you might also think social media is a great tool to do that. And that’s correct.

But you wanna avoid pride and self-promotion problems. Right?

So, here’s what you do. Self promote as much as you need, want, or desire. Put your name and your information, products, and services out there for everyone to see. Use whatever social media tools you have at your disposal. And just don’t make it all about YOU. Don’t brag about YOU. Because that’s how pride sneaks in. And there’s no need for it.

Besides that, as the old marketing saying goes: “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” And if they get the impression that you care about YOU more than helping them, you’re dead in the water.

That being said, yourself promotion should still show that you’re confident you can do what needs to be done. And here’s what I recommend to help you keep a check on your pride versus your self promotion.

Read what the Bible says about pride.

And it has a lot to say about it. And it ain’t good. Especially in the Proverbs.

Then, once you get your head on right about it, you can securely sing, along with the words to this song:

I Can Do

Outside the lines the grass is greener.
But that will not change my demeanor.
Because my life runs like a river.
I’ll take what all my days deliver.

I know the morning sun will shine,
And so, I’ll draw another line.
I’ll keep a box of all my most important things
Inside my heart where they can be

I can do…what I need to. I know it’s so, so I can do!

Friday after Thanksgiving in the land of the living

Wow. It seems like this happens every year. It’s a Friday after Thanksgiving. And according to a lot of businesses and retailers, this day started days ago. Now, I’m not a professional time traveler, so correct me if I’m wrong. But I don’t see how today could have started days ago. Am I missing something? Because it seems, to me, like…

A black Friday after Thanksgiving should start on FRIDAY!

I mean, c’mon, man. Isn’t that just good ol’ common sense? Oops, I forgot. Common sense ain’t so common any more. Especially when you consider how many people believe boys and girls can switch genders.

But I’m not going down that rabbit (one of the new gender identities) hole right now.

Anyway…

I’ve shared my black Friday bullet list before. But I’m gonna share it, here, again. Because there might still be a couple of people in the world who haven’t seen it. And maybe you still haven’t used it as a guideline for today.

  • Go into the red to help someone else get in the black
  • Pay lots more in the future for what I take home now
  • Stand in line for something that will be there next week at the same price
  • Become part of a frenzied crowd or mob
  • Change my mind about what’s a truly good deal
  • Allow any hype to change my mood or my attitude
  • Buy into the retail message of Christmas while forfeiting the real message

 

I know most of my friends (you included?) don’t even like the brick and mortar shopping experience anymore. And who can blame them (or me) when you consider the almost non-existent customer service in most places? But there are apparently still millions of people who buy into (literally) the hype about the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Commercials push out the message they want you to believe is true.

How a visit with your friends, family, and relatives is such an awful strain. It’s boring at best. And confrontational at worst. Retailers want you to buy like no other day of the year can possibly match the “bargains” of today.

Poppycock. Balderdash. Gobbledygook. And codswallop.

Traditional retailers kick off their “holiday season” sometime in August now. Because they need to make up for the rest of the year. And the escalating tyranny of our government, with taxation on literally almost every part of life, means this trend will continue.

I’m not at all for taking the gift-giving out of Christmas. I love getting and giving gifts. But I want  love, not profits, to be the motivation for that. And I believe it’s possible to serve others well, all year, with that in mind.

Feel free to totally disregard my somewhat jaded tips. You won’t be in the minority if you do. But I hope you’ll at least remember the end game. Which is, this life ain’t the end. Because your Creator, the actual “reason for the season,” has the gift of eternal life neatly wrapped up and ready for you to open.

And that beats figgy pudding any day.

Micro moments here and now can change your woes to wow

This Magic Moment, a song written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, was a big hit for Ben E. King and the Drifters back in 1960. And I’ll bet they had no idea they actually created one of the billions of micro moments where certain demographics spend their time.

Yeah, I’m gonna call short, catchy songs what they are. Micro moments.

When you listen to a song like that one from Ben E. King and the Drifters, it only takes about two and half minutes and it’s over. And you just experienced something that was easy to access, easy to click and listen to, and didn’t take much of your time.

Years ago, I wrote about the short attention span of readers and consumers. And I saw internet marketing “gurus” talk about how “long form copy” will never die. And maybe for a certain group (or groups) of people that will be true.

But apparently millennials don’t fit into those groups. Because I just read an article that said smartphones are their favorite device to work on. And for a large percentage of them, 70%, their smartphone is their go-to device every day. In fact, millennials are highly likely to do everything on their phone. And they like short, fast, content and interactions.

Plus, they wanna be able to find an answer when they think about it. And that means they don’t wanna wait till they get to their laptop or desktop. Why do that when you can just ask your phone?

So, of course, the great and powerful Oz…uh, Google…chimed in on micro moments.

Their research showed how a huge amount of what goes on, online, is broken up into short and fast connections. And most of it’s done on a smartphone. So, they called ’em micro moments.

And they said if you’re a company who’d like a slice of the millennial spending pie, you better make sure your website or other online buying experience can deliver quickly.

Think about it.

When you wanna get a fast answer to something, and you’re not at your desk, do you just wait till you get home? No way. You pop out your phone and either ask Siri or Google or Alexa or type in a search term, and voila! You get your answer (or millions of answers) in about a second.

It’s an amazing time to be alive.

But guess what? You could also be gone in a micro moment. In the blink of an eye. And by “gone” I mean you could leave your body and move into the next phase of your existence.

And you have two choices where you’ll exist. Life forever in Heaven. Or death forever in hell. And if you haven’t made your choice before you die, you won’t even have a fraction of a micro moment to decide. Because your choice has to be made in the here and now.

So, here’s a suggestion.

Ask Siri or Google or Alexa to help you find a Bible. And then turn to the New Testament and look for Paul’s letters. They’ll be listed as sections or books. But they’re actually letters. And you’ll find them listed from Romans to Philemon.

The reason I suggest reading Paul’s letters is because he was the apostle or messenger to the Gentiles. And if you’re not a Jew, you’re a Gentile. So, his letters give you a clear understanding of what you need to do to make a wise decision for where you’ll be forever.

Or you can skip my suggestion and just pop out your phone and listen to Ben E. King and the Drifters again.

Website Marketing Mistakes

You can make some website marketing mistakes and still have a successful online business website. Yep, just like in real life, your mistakes don’t predestine you to failure. Of course, mistakes also don’t predestine you to success either. Maybe you’ve heard well-known marketing experts say something like “you’ll have to fail your way to success”. I disagree with that wording. Because I firmly believe words mean things, ideas have consequences, and saying something over and over doesn’t make it true.

Website marketing mistakes

Website marketing mistakes can help you, if you learn from your mistakes.

I’ve been writing for websites and creating them since 1997. I like to say I’ve been “doing this since the internet was still figuring out what it wanted to be when it grows up”. And believe me, I’ve made my share of clunky website marketing mistakes”as well as design mistakes and content mistakes.

But these mistakes have taught me some very valuable lessons. I’ve learned to”

  • Streamline content for faster load times (computer and mobile browsers)
  • Write for people and “spiders”
  • Look for an audience before building content or anything else

 

Here’s why it matters.

You could be doing some really great things with your ideas, products, and services. And you might even be doing some very cool things with your website. But they might not be getting in front of the right audience. See my third bullet point, above. And I think it’s the most important point.

Probably the biggest of all website marketing mistakes is to think your “great idea”will translate into a great website and great internet business. But did you do any research to back that up? Or do you just “feel”like it’s true? You can save yourself a lot of headaches by doing some digging online. Google has some awesome free tools for doing this. I still use them in addition to some other research software.

Another one of the top marketing mistakes, online, is adding content to your site that distracts instead of entices. There are so many “cool”things you can add to your online business. But just because you “CAN”doesn’t mean you should. Think of it this way”when you drive into a metropolitan area and start to see tons of billboards, do they make it more efficient to get where you’re going? Or do they mostly distract? I tend to tune them out unless I’m casually cruising.

And there are lots of other subtle and blatant things that can add or subtract from the experience your visitors have on your website. If you’d prefer to get some help streamlining and adding valuable creative content, I’m here. To your marketing success”

Fragmented marketing is a thing

Fragmented marketing is a real thing.

But I don’t care because I used to sing. For a living, as a matter of fact. Funny, but that headline and the next couple of lines even sound fragmented, but they’re not. I’ve got a point. Now, let’s see…where did I put it? Well, while I’m looking for it, let me share this little story with you. And hopefully it has something to do with fragmented marketing.

Fragmented marketing is a thing

Back in the day I couldn’t care less about fragmented marketing.

And I can’t say I’m terribly fond of the subject even now. But I digress. So, let me take you back in time to the days of full-time live music. Yes, that was a thing, too. A musician (well, a good one anyway) could work 5 to 7 days a week…on one job. (gig, as it’s known to musicians who didn’t want to think about jobs or work) At least you could work steady if you had a quality act.

I remember getting guys together, choosing and rehearsing songs, taking band pics, creating demo tapes, and making connections. We got a lot of our steady work through agents and agencies. And we booked a lot of our own dates once we got to know the owners and managers of venues. Then, we’d work hard to put on a good show and build a following. That meant finding ways to stay in touch with those people. And that was back before internet, email, and smartphones. But mailing postcards was still fairly cheap.

So, we created clever, physical newsletters and postcards and mailed ’em out each month. And if we had phone numbers instead of mailing addresses, we’d make calls to let the “fans” know where we’d be each week. A few fans turned into dozens. And dozens turned into hundreds. And hundreds turned into traveling full-time and playing venues all across America.

And just what in the world does a music career have to do with fragmented marketing?

Maybe you already picked up on it as you read my story. If not, notice how I said WE got guys together. WE chose songs and rehearsed. And WE did all those “marketing” chores…pictures, bookings, demo tapes, etc. Although we might have split up the work among the band, there weren’t a lot of outside “marketing specialists” getting our names up in lights.

You might not care a thing about a music career. But if you have services, products, or information you want and need to sell, you gotta tell people. Right? I mean, surely you don’t think you can be unknown and make money. Not likely.

Good thing you’ve got lots of choices out there these days. You can easily find amazing website designers, SEO experts, and pay-per-click experts all over the internet. Then there’s the radio advertising people and TV ad people. And let’s not forget (how could we) the ever present internet marketing specialists.

Because you can find all those services everywhere…or you could even jump on YouTube and learn how to do it yourself…you don’t need me. So, goodbye. All the best to you.

Oh wait…maybe you should think about this…

When you go hire a radio guy (who calls himself a business consultant) you’ll find out how easy it is to sign up for (and pay for) some ads. Of course, the TV guy (who also calls himself a business consultant) can get you hooked up with some “effective spots” on his local channel. And all those other “business consultants” will have no trouble showing you why their services will get you the results you’re looking for. I’m not knocking them. They’re just doing what they do. Lots of them are truly great at what they do.

But here’s the thing…

Those guys are sales people. They get paid to sell ad space and media. Not the best bang for YOUR business bucks. And when you choose too many specialists, your message might become a mixtape. Creative, but not necessarily consistent.

Remember, all those salespeople don’t get paid to consult with you and your business. They get paid to sell. And whether your ads make you and your business any money doesn’t change that.

So, avoid that kind of fragmented marketing like it’s a punk rocker on crack. Instead, get someone on your team. Someone who cares about helping you do great things. It might not be me. In fact, it’s probably not me. Because I only work with a select few clients anyway. But it should be someone you can talk to and be confident they’re listening.

And that’s another way to enjoy Rhyme and Reason in your life.

Poets and Writers are action igniters.

Can poets and writers be action igniters?

In a word…Yes! Words and music have been at the center of my life for as long as I can remember. There’s nothing more satisfying than writing a new book, poem, or song, playing it for someone for the first time, and getting a smile or a nod of approval. And I remember how much I loved studying famous poets and writers when I was in high school.

About the time I became a junior in high school I started writing poems to market myself to girls. My parents divorced a little before I entered grade school. And my younger brother and I spent school time in Texas and summer time in Kansas. So, I didn’t get to play organized sports…which meant there was no chance of wooing the opposite sex with my prowess on the “field of battle”. What I lacked in sports I made up for with poetry and singing.

It worked like a charm…and more than 3% of the time (hint: that’s an impressive percentage in the marketing world). If only my shyness hadn’t interfered with my follow-through…because I usually had something like a 98% approval rating. I couldn’t reach the coveted 100% mark because…well…nobody’s perfect.

Poets and writers need to eat, too.

A few years after high school I became a professional musician. Yeah, people paid me for live performance. Sometimes a lot…imagine that! And I got paid to play for years until I decided I didn’t want to do it full time anymore. That’s when I returned to my first love…writing. Only this time, I knew I needed something more lucrative than poetry. Fortunately, the internet affords poets and writers some great options for using writing skills to make money.

During my time as an entertainer I started writing and producing radio commercials. Then I learned copywriting, which is simply writing for business, and I’ve been doing both of these for quite a while now. I discovered how poets and writers can use their powers of persuasion and creative insight to ignite readers to take action. And when that action leads to sales, the payoff can be very rewarding.

When you’re ready to ignite some action in your business, look no further than a poet to help. Well, at least no further than the poet you’re reading right now anyway.

Now, jump on the The TRUTH. And be part of the growing band of believers who wanna show the world that life has Rhyme and Reason because God is Real.
