Metaphors for kids are found in rhyme and reason ground

I enjoy dreaming up metaphors for kids. Plain and simple. Because, when I write, I like to hide the deeper meaning just a little below the surface. Try to get ‘em to think. Not just react. I love rhymes. But I also love reason. And by “reason,” of course I mean logic. Read my Rhyme and Reason blog posts and so many of my … Read the rest…

People watching turns into things I write and send to you

My love for letters and words began long before I set foot in a school. Some of my earliest memories are of my Grandmother and my Mom reading stories and the Sunday “funnies” to me. I think the word pictures those stories and comic strips helped me create led to my lifelong habit of people watching. Especially goofy kids and their families. (By the … Read the rest…

My story as a dreamer and a silly sunbeamer

I could make this more complicated, but my story is pretty basic. I’ve always been a dreamer and and an optimist. This world can beat down dreams and optimism. But I don’t depend on this world for my inspiration. And I don’t depend on this world for esteem. And even if it sounds old-fashioned and out-of-touch, I believe in and trust God. He’s the … Read the rest…

Where I am is in the middle of a recollected riddle

Where I am, right now, is not a place to let a breeze drift in through open windows. Not here and now. Maybe after a couple more months. But here, along the Emerald Coast, it’s still mighty hot and humid. Not open window weather. Here’s why I brought up where I am. Because it was exactly on this day, the 8th of August, over … Read the rest…

Distant memories inspired many of these

I’ve been an adult for a long, long time now. Tiny time is part of my distant memories. But it IS a memory. I haven’t forgotten how important little things are. Especially when you’re little. In fact, when you’re little, little things aren’t little, they’re big. So tiny time is a big deal. But then those little, big things become distant memories. Kids can … Read the rest…

Silly is cool so it makes a great tool

What if I create a talking toad or a laughing lizard? Kids are just fine with that. Silly is cool with them. Make a quirky character, and they really just don’t care. And if the hero’s only 1 inch tall, most of them don’t care at all. Silly is cool. That’s the silver rule. Did you catch my drift when I made that shift? … Read the rest…

Alliteration for kids to open their minds and eyelids

Yeah, I’ve got some alliteration for kids today. So, if you’re a grown-up, you can just look the other way. Just kidding, of course. Because you’ll probably have to read this to your kids or grandkids. Unless they are homeschooled. If so, they might actually understand the rhyme I’m gonna share. It’s alliteration for kids that doesn’t talk down to them. As always, it’s … Read the rest…
