Shadow of things to come

Did you see the movie “Ghost”with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore? The silly plot to the movie was that Patrick’s character was murdered but he didn’t immediately leave the planet. And he didn’t go to Heaven or hell. Because, according to the plot, he had to make sure his true love, Demi’s character, would be safe. But one thing that stood out, to me, was how when someone died, and Patrick’s character could see shadowy figures carrying them off to some place of torment. Reminded me of a shadow of things to come.

Shadow of things to come

A guy named Paul talked about a shadow of things to come, too.

But he wasn’t talking about some silly, ghostly, spooky shadow. His description was more of a foreshadowing and focus. And he wrote it like this…

“So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.”

The foreshadowing is the minor point. And the major point is focus. I really like the part where Paul says “let no one cheat you of your reward.”And that includes YOU, by the way. Because YOU are the only person who ultimately make the decision. For…or against God.

My suggestion is FOR.

Because this world is getting meaner and meaner. And those who would love to see Christians wiped from the face of the Earth are growing in numbers, almost exponentially.

So, make a choice to be on the winning side.
And you have to choose. There’s no place you can hide.
And be prepared to become a lightning rod
For the strikes from all the masses who hate God.

Handwriting without tears through the everlasting years

Some say the way you write says a lot about you. And I don’t mean the words you choose. I’m talking about the way you push your pen. I recently read an article that said if you write with an irregular style, you’re dealing with chaos in your life. And if you use a lot of circles, you’re feeling defensive. But I didn’t find anything in the analysis charts that talked about handwriting without tears.

Handwriting without tears through the everlasting years

But who cares about handwriting without tears?

Well, except maybe for all those teenage girls who believe the guy who just dumped “˜em has left an everlasting empty void in their hearts. Of course, they rightfully have tears all over the pages they write in their diaries and journals.

But you, my intrepid fellow human being, have no excuses.

Because you have access to information that even kings and emperors from olden days didn’t have. And you can tap into that well of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding with the tap of your pointer finger.

And when you do, you can see how the handwriting of requirements for the vast majority of the world don’t have to apply to you forever. Ain’t that awesome?

“Aw, c’mon, Tony. Stop beatin’ around the bush. What are you talkin’ about?”

Well, let’s see. What other words fit? Hmm.

OK, you know what I mean when I say “laws.”Right? How about those? Wouldn’t it be great to know that even though you messed up and broke the laws, you don’t have to pay for them? And especially if the jail time is forever.

Yeah, it’s a good idea to get that all wiped off your slate.

But I’ll let you in on a little secret. There’s no judge, lawyer, or bail bondsman who’s ever gonna be able to help you clean your slate like that.

And you’re not gonna be able to bribe your way out of it.

But you CAN repent your way out of it.

“Oh man…honey, bring me another beer and change the channel. Tony’s done started talkin’ church talk again.”

Now hang on a minute. Because this has to do with more than what’s on TV the rest of the night. (and that includes all those campaign commercials)

Yeah, if you get this handwriting issue resolved, and you could be looking at an eternity of good news. Even without a big screen with 1000 channels.

Be sure yours is handwriting without tears
And see how to alleviate your fears
Of darkness, all alone…and hopeless to the bone,
Anticipating when true hope appears.

Stay tuned,

Song of fools is lost in whirlpools

OK, I’ll admit it. I’m human. And at least a part of me doesn’t like to be told I’m wrong. Sure, I’m the only person in the world who feels this way. Yeah, right. But the truth is…Truth needs to (and will) win out over feelings. Even mine. If and when they disagree with Truth. So, that’s why it’s crucial to be able to take criticism and rebuke. Otherwise, you get up each day and sing the song of fools. And each new verse is the same as the first.

Song of fools is lost in whirlpools

That’s not you I hear singing the song of fools…is it?

“Honey, I think Tony just insulted my singing.”

Not the voice. But maybe the content of your character.

No, I’m just kidding. At least for the vast majority of the people who read and listen to my ramblings and writings.

But I’ve heard there are a few of you out there…over the far horizons and beyond the bounding bends…who think you don’t need to listen to someone wise. Or that it’s just a silly idea some old white-haired guys with long beards and wrinkled faces made up a long time ago.

OK, you can think that if you want. But you’re gonna miss out on opportunities beyond your wildest, earthly imagination. Or you might, if you don’t hustle up some humility before it’s too late.

Because, like I’ve said lots of times before, it’s a limited time offer.

Sing a humble song now. Or hum a horrible tune later.

One leads to a downward spiraling whirlpool. And the other is caught up in a wonderful whirlwind.

They make the words up as they go along.
Each time they sing it, it’s a different song.
Their music follows no melodic rules.
So dissonance destroys the song of fools.

Seasoned with salt brings bad taste to a halt

There’s a reason food tastes better when it’s seasoned with salt. Because salt is tasty. And it’s the most versatile seasoning on the planet. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s essential to your health. Wow, is anybody else getting a hankering for some sea-salted snacks right about now?

Seasoned with salt brings bad taste to a halt

When your snacks are seasoned with salt, make sure it’s good salt.

“Oh brother, Tony. Why you gotta make everything be difficult. Salt is salt.”

Hmm…is it?

I only ask because I’ve seen a lot of evidence to the contrary. Apparently the regular table salt you find on…well…tables…can’t hold a seasonal candle to sea salt. And there are other choices out there, too. Like: Himalayan pink salt, kosher salt, and Celtic salt.

But I don’t wanna shake you up too much (ha! I crack myself up) on which one to use. After all, I’m not a health coach. And I don’t play one on TV…or the internet.

No, I’m just casually bringing up salt in the conversation as one of my subtle techniques for connecting it to something your Creator wants you to do.

“Oh no, hon. Cover Timmy’s ears. Tony’s doin’ that Bible thing again.”

Now, don’t be that way.

I’m only trying to help you avoid a saltless, eternal fate worse than death.

But, hey, if you’re good with that, then read no further.

But if that sounds about as appealing as listening to political ads 24 hours a day, then here’s my short take on it.

Consider talking to others like Paul suggested in Colossians 4:6.

“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”

Imagine how much more you would be heard
If you took the time to season every word.
But, sadly, most prefer to pepper spray
Every syllable of every word they say.
And so their conversations lead nowhere,
And it just might be they’ll live forever there.

Sing a Psalm in high school even if it's not cool

Let’s jump into my virtual time machine and zoom back to the third quarter of the twentieth century. As the years zoom past the concave, heat resistant time machine windows, notice the fashion and hairstyle changes. And the cars starting to look bigger, wider, and boxier. And, then we slow down and ease up to our destination. A large, secular high school at the north edge of Pasadena, Texas. Look closely down the sidewalk just to the left of the building, and you’ll see a nerdy looking student with a handful of books briskly walking to his next class. Choir. His favorite. And he’s gonna go sing a Psalm.

Sing a Psalm in high school even if it's not cool

“Did you say sing a Psalm, Tony? That’s weird. You also said it’s a secular high school.”

Yeah. You read that right.

And, just in case you haven’t already picked up on it, that nerdy looking student was me. I had just made it through my freshman year in high school. A very rough year for me because I hadn’t determined and defined who I was yet. But I’m sure there were plenty of others who had me pegged as a nerd. Or a geek. Because, from the 7th grade on, the school system had placed me in what they called “accelerated classes.”

But, just like in the movies, being “a brain” doesn’t win you points with the so-called “cool kids.” Not that I minded that all that much. I just didn’t like being looked at as weird simply because I could remember things.

Anyway…

Let’s get back to that choir thing.

Because, in my freshman year, I took classes my Dad suggested in order to prepare my brain for the “real world.” And I skipped out on music…my favorite. Instead, I opted for German extra math classes.

But my friends from junior high, who had been in choir with me there, coaxed me back into music when it came time to pick classes for my sophomore year. So, I tried out for the choir…which you had to do back then. And, when I found out I had made it, I was thrilled. Because I was gonna get back to my lifelong love.

I’ve mentioned, before, how my secular high school was far more conservative than any so-called Christian schools these days. And one example was how my Christian songs were included in our choir repertoire. Plus, when it came time for my first solo performance during vocal competitions, I picked a song based on Psalm 27. In fact, the first 4 lines of the song came directly from the Psalm…

The Lord is my alight and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?

Do you know a government school where that would be included nowadays?

I seriously doubt it.

And I’m in no way suggesting that Christian songs should be included in the government school curriculum. Because I don’t think there should be a government school curriculum. Because I don’t believe there should be government schools.

But I DO believe Christian songs should be included in kids’ lives. Because their lives depend on the promises found in the songs and Psalms. And if that’s important to you, maybe this message brought you some value.

If not, then forget I said anything. I’ll just go sing a Psalm all by myself.

Stay tuned,

Qualified for the job instead of just another poor slob

I remember, when I graduated high school, how quickly the “real world” loomed on the horizon. You know what I’m talking about. Figuring out what to do so the parents don’t have to support you anymore. And, for me, college wasn’t a preferred choice. At least, not right away. So, the second choice was…say it with me…go to work. But I soon found out I wasn’t “qualified for the job” after just about every application.

Qualified for the job instead of just another poor slob

But how can you ever be qualified for the job if no one will hire you?

That’s the age old question for young people just starting out in the world. And it was much more of a legitimate question back before the internet and all it has to offer. But it’s still important to build up qualifications for a vocation. And if you know what that is nowadays, you have lots of opportunities to “pursue your passion” without the need for college.

Now, as you might expect, if you’ve been following me for a while, I don’t bring this up to help you find a job or career.

No, my focus is the “qualified” part.

Because your life should go on forever. And I mean forever in a place far better than any dream job or career could ever compare to. But you’ll need to be qualified to be there. It’s the most exclusive AND the most inclusive residence you’ll ever occupy.

“OK, Tony. So, what are the qualifications? And how can I be qualified?”

Well, it’s really not all that complicated.

Just get yourself  plenty of “wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy…”

“Wow, that sounds like a lot of work, dude. Not sure I can do all that.”

Well, then I suggest trust and give “thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

Because…

“He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love…”

And that’t the only place you’ll be qualified and

“have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.”

In other words, every single bit of the hard work has been done for you. So, even if you’re a newbie Christian, you’re hired for the higher life in Heaven.

How cool is that?
There’s nothing cooler.
Your best friend is
The living Ruler.
So, know this, that
He lived and then died
And rose again,
And He’s qualified.  (and then, so are you)

Election day when you have your say

In case you haven’t noticed, election day is almost here. And, as always, this is the most important election of this, or any other, lifetime. (Do you detect my veiled sarcasm?) But, seriously, I wouldn’t recommend not voting. Because any thinking person will tell you it’s the only way we can “make a difference.”

Election day when you have your say

And that’s the promise of every election day.

Make a difference. But people say that like it’s a good thing. And I mean like it’s ALWAYS a good thing. But it’s not. And if history teaches us anything (and it almost never does), it’s that those differences have led us to this current chaotic cacophony.

You’ve heard it your whole life. The majority rule.

And that’s a flawed perspective. At least if you have any desire to apply biblical principles to life. Because the Bible says most people are selfish. So, it’s literally only natural that most people will vote with selfish intentions. But maybe you’re not so easily convinced this is true. Maybe you need examples of bad voting results.

OK. But remember…you asked for them.

How about people voting for the right to get high? Yeah, it’s already “legal” (in one form or another) in more than half the states in America. And, here in my home state of Colorado, it’s legal in just about every way. And, as a result, you can literally smell it on just about every street.

But who cares? Right? As long as the people feel good.

Alright. How about taxes? According to Biblical principles a 10% tax rate is tyrannical. And we’re effectively taxed at a rate more than five times that much here in America. And other countries around the world are taxed even more.

But who cares? Right? As long as the people are clothed, educated, and fed.

Well, then…how about people voting to blur the lines between moral and immoral sexuality? If the majority vote to allow men to “marry” men or women to “marry” women, then that’s how it should be. We certainly don’t need some antiquated black book telling us what’s right for these modern times.

But who cares? Right? As long as two (or more) adults consent to the “union.”

Here’s one more example of election day theft.

How about people voting to force business owners to pay employees more than just their hourly (or salary) wages? On the surface, it sounds caring. And benevolent. Because who wouldn’t want to help pregnant working moms or workers with a “seriously ill loved one” at home?  But dig deeper and discover how it can actually destroy businesses. And, at the very least, drive the cost of goods and services up and up.

But who cares? Right? As long as “the man” has to pay his “fair share” and the people “feel good.”

It’s sad, at best, and evil, at worst, to see how the majority don’t care how they’re voting away freedom. And that won’t end well. How could it? Because true freedom, liberty, and rights are from God. And voting them away means walking away from Him.

So, this election day, keep in mind
What you just might be leaving behind.
And ask yourself, “Would God want me to?”
And “Which one is the right thing to do?”

Stay tuned,

Keto friendly fruit you simply can't dispute

Some of my wacky friends (and in this case, wacky is a term of endearment) are on that keto diet thing. And it’s been around long enough I’m sure you know it’s a low-carb, high-fat and high-protein diet. And that’s just a simplification description. So, don’t send me messages about the finer points. Because I’m not here to tell anybody not to go keto. In fact, I wanna share some info about keto friendly fruit. Because I hear certain proponents say most fruit is a no-no on veto.

Keto friendly fruit you simply can't dispute

This keto friendly fruit is guaranteed to be healthy for everyone.

“Wow! That’s a mighty bold claim, Tony. I thought you’re never supposed to say something is good for everyone. The FDA is gonna come after you.”

That’s OK. Let “˜em come. Because I stand by my claim. And I’ve done enough research on this fruit to know there’s no dispute.

But there is one catch.

“A-ha! I knew it. Honey…check this out. Tony’s gotta cover his tracks, now.”

No. I stand by my claim. But the catch is this. Even though this fruit is healthy for everyone, keto kooks included, most people will avoid it like it’s the plague.

“Uh-oh. Hon…I think Tony’s about to make one of his switcheroo’s again.”

Yeah, you’re probably catching on now.

So, enough with the suspense building. Here’s the list of 9 keto friendly fruits.

  1. love
  2. joy
  3. peace
  4. longsuffering (aka patience)
  5. kindness
  6. goodness
  7. faithfulness
  8. gentleness
  9. self-control

You gotta admit, that’s an awesome list. But you might be wondering why anyone would avoid it “like it’s the plague?”

Because this fruit is evidence of a commitment. And I don’t mean commitment to a diet. No, this is way longer lasting than some trendy low-carb diet. I’m talking about a commitment to the One who made you.

“Dang it! I knew it. I just knew it. This guy connects everything to God. Yeesh.”

Well, I guess that’s as good a way of looking at it as any. Because, when you get right down to it, everything that’s good for you is connected to God. After all, He’s the One who created us. And He’s the one who created a world that contained everything we’d need to sustain us.

So, there’s my healthy diet tip for your day…week, month, year, and life. And like all good things in life, it won’t help you one bit if you don’t apply it.

Education without application
Leads to a continuation of frustration.

Podcast producer and truth talk reducer

I’ve been a podcast producer for years. Even before it became this “new thing.” But my current The Power of God’s Love Podcast wasn’t always what it is now. In fact, it’s gone through several changes since I started. But, like a marketing guy I know says, “Your market is everything. It dictates what to say…” And my podcast “market” is my listeners.

And over the years my listeners have chimed in from time to time to tell me what they liked. Or didn’t. A lot of episodes were geared toward kids. Other episodes were about just good ol’ words and music. And, as it turns out, apparently listeners prefer it when I share rhymes and reasons (and music) based on Biblical principles. So, I’m glad to keep creating that kind of content.

Podcast producer and truth talk reducer

“OK, podcast producer. But what does truth talk reducer mean, Tony?”

Well, I’ve listened to a lot of podcasts during the time I’ve been at this. And one trend I noticed was a tendency toward long-windedness. And repetitious content that seemed like the host or producer was trying to hard to make a longer podcast. So, I figured I’d buck that trend and go for smaller bite-sized episodes.

That way I can focus on a single idea or concept. And then either offer some Biblical insight or add a relevant song.

But it’s not only about life lessons. Sometimes I just talk about current events. Or road stories from my days as a full-time, professional traveling musician.

And I’ve seen my audience grow over the past couple of years. So, it looks like at least most of my listeners enjoy the way I’m putting it out there now. But if that’s not you, feel free to email me and share your opinion. I don’t guarantee it’ll change the way I do things. But if enough of my “market” says they prefer another way, then so be it.

Alright. Just wanted to share that with you for whatever it’s worth. And just in case you’re not already subscribed to the The Power of God’s Love Podcast, here are links to many of the ways you can tune in. And they include the biggies…

Perfect vacation isn't just a destination

What’s your idea of a perfect vacation or relaxing getaway? Yeah, I’m talking about that in October. So what. It’s a way to keep the warm glow of summer glowing just a little longer. Not buying it? Well, nevertheless, maybe you’re part of the majority of Americans who prefer an island day (aka beach vacation). That’s what I found on one website I visited yesterday. And I guess it makes sense, if you prefer the relaxing kind of vacation.

Perfect vacation isn't just a destination

Apparently 39% of people polled said time on the beach was the perfect vacation.

The next most popular was an outdoors trip. And I fall into that category. Because generally speaking I’m not a fan of perspiring on a bed of sand. Or lying still on a towel on a bed of sand. I guess that’s all just a wee bit too relaxing for my taste. And I want nothing at all to do with the third place vacation idea…theme parks.

Yuck! Where’s my Mickey Mouse barf bag?

But I digress…

Getting back to the whole beach thing. Even though a day at the beach isn’t my idea of a walk in the park, there’s a lot about it I love. Especially the music. And I’ve written quite a few songs with that sort of beachy theme.

There’s something fun about the beats and the colors and the scents. And it sparks my songwriting imagination. And I remember a buddy I used to hang out with, in Texas, saying he thought it was interesting how I love the mountains but sing the island songs so well. It’s sort of like this…

Oh, oh, oh, it’s an island day
Oh, oh, oh sail your cares away
And oh, oh, oh, cross the seven seas
Oh, oh, oh, on a clear cool Breeze

Be sure to listen to the The Power of God’s Love Podcast episode that goes with this. Because I’ll share the song.

Lies and deceit are no longer discreet

Once upon a time, many years ago, a little boy, named Adolph, dreamed of one day becoming a great leader. And then, one day, he actually DID become a leader. But instead of leading his people with truth and love, he chose lies and deceit. In fact, he told some of the biggest lies the world has ever known. And, sadly, his people believed him and helped him destroy millions of lives. ~The End

Lies and deceit are terrorizing tools in the wrong hands.

And of course I’m sure you recognize the character in my thinly disguised fairy tale. Adolph Hitler.

During World War II there was a psychological profile report, on Hitler, prepared by the United States Office of Strategic Services. And the report said this about him…

“His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.”

Wow. Thank goodness we don’t see anything like that in our American political system. Right?

Yeah, I’m being a wee bit facetious. Because, obviously, those same tactics are used all the time in our political system. Instead of clear focus on solutions, it appears to be more productive to focus on the defamation of your opponent’s character these days.

And this happens on the Right AND Left.

But the Big Lie strategy is the only tool of the Left right now. And they definitely “never allow the public to cool off.” And they also definitely “concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong.”

I’m not a Trump fan. And I wish he’d truly become a Christian because he’s at least a patriot who still wants Americans to be free. But even with all the flaws in his character, I can guarantee that the humongous problems America faces don’t exist because of his short time in office.

No, America’s humongous problems exist (and won’t go away any time soon) because we continue to follow a broken system. And it’s a system that will continue getting worse. Unless enough people who love God will say, “Enough already!”

Considering how generations have now grown up in this broken system, it’s hard to be optimistic about that happening. But because I believe in the one, true, living, loving God of all creation, my hope never dies.

So, today I hope the Truth will set you free
From the consequences of deceitful lies.
And I hope your heart is lifted lovingly
On the wings of eagles through the bluest skies.

Feed the beast unless you're the feast

I’ll be you remember the Skittles commercial that said, “Taste the Rainbow.” And then there’s supposedly an old Cherokee saying that goes, “Feed your inner wolf.” And I think it’s that kind of silliness that leads people to believe they can actually walk up and feed the beast. No matter what kind of beast it is.

OK, maybe commercials and Indian folktales aren’t to blame. But, in that case, I’ll have to say it’s all the wacky weed making its way across America.

Feed the beast unless you're the feast

Whatever it is, people think they can walk right up and feed the wild beast.

And I just saw another online news headline that said a tourist was seen hand-feeding a bear in Tennessee. It was a 21 year old woman. So, she’s fairly fresh out of a government indoctrination station. (aka public school) And that means the real world is still a challenge to her.

And apparently the wise, local county wildlife department is charging her with a misdemeanor. “Illegal black bear feeding.” I’m sure you’ll see the glaring typo. Right? Yeah, they completely misspelled “stupid.”

That young woman is mighty fortunate that her hand-feeding of the bear didn’t turn into literally feeding her hand to the bear. And the article I read said that she put chocolate and watermelon up close to the bear’s mouth. For the love of Yogi, hasn’t anyone ever told her how bigoted it is to assume a bear would like those items?

Yeah, there’s enough stupid to go around on this story. Because apparently somebody posted somewhere that “The action in this video could result in serious injury.”And that’s a sure sign that a lotta people are a couple of chicken legs shy of a full pic-a-nic basket.

When you walk up to a bear, just be sure
That your food and intentions are all pure.
‘Cause the bear might wonder why you can’t look him in the eye
And then take you to his den for a tour.

Dialogue bubble in a whole lotta trouble

If you’re a fan of (or when you were a kid you were a fan of) superhero comic books, you’re familiar with the ubiquitous dialogue bubble. And it’s also known as a speech bubble, speech balloon, dialogue balloon, and even a conversation cloud. And maybe you’re already saying, “Seriously, Tony? You’re gonna babble on about a bubble?”

Well, I don’t think I would’ve put it that way (although technically I did, because it was me who wrote that), but yes. I’m gonna give you another one of those closer looks into the inner workings of my contemplating mind.

Play

There’s more than one kind of dialogue bubble by the way.

In those comic books you could see one kind of bubble for a character you see. And you could see another kind of bubble for a character who’s speaking but not visible in that frame (aka panel). Then, there are the thought bubbles with little circles leading up to the larger circle. And bubbles with a jagged outline usually represent screaming.

Some comic strips and comic books use whisper bubbles. And they draw those with a dotted outline instead of solid. Apparently that conveys the softer sound of a whisper.

And you might find colored bubbles, slimy looking monster bubbles, and even icicle bubbles.

Wow, this list is bubbling over.

But it all makes sense when you pause and think about it. After all, language is complicated. And it’s full of expression, emotion, and nuance. So, it’s only natural comic book and comic strip artists and writers would want to get as much of that across as possible. Right?

But before I go any further on this subject, I’ll tell you right now. None of that is the reason I thought of writing all this down. Nope. My reason is actually more comedically sinister.

Because, as I’ve been watching snippets of debates, online, I started thinking about what it would look like if the debaters and moderators had dialogue bubbles over their heads. And I could imagine how it would all start out clearly enough. You know, just like in a comic strip frame. Just one or two bubbles.

But then, the egos and political agendas would rear their ugly heads. And suddenly the screen would be literally filled with bubbles of just about every style and name. Especially the jagged ones. And the red, angry ones. And the intermittent icicle bubbles when someone’s blood runs cold.

It would make the old Batman TV show fight scene bubbles (Pow! Zap! Boff! Splatt!) look like a Rocky Mountain sky. (In case you don’t know, a Rocky Mountain sky is often cloudless…or almost cloudless)

I know it’s never gonna be done.

Because, for some of those debates and so-called “discussions” there just wouldn’t be enough screen room…or time. But it would be fun to watch if a crack team of animators (hello Pixar) put something like that together. Now, that would be must-see TV.

Let me share a little message in a conversation cloud.
And it won’t have to be jagged ’cause I won’t be talking loud.
I just wanna tell you thank you for the times you’re tuning in
To my Tony flights of fancy when I take thoughts for a spin.

New man characteristics and a couple of statistics

OK, you might as well know up front. I’m gonna preach a little bit here. But I’m gonna go easy on you (sort of) and connect it to music. And the subject for the day is about your new man characteristics. So, ladies…don’t read any more of this. Or even try to sneak a peak over your man’s shoulder. This ain’t for you. Because, well, you’re not a man. So, how could you ever hope to be a new one. Right?

Wrong. That was a test. Because even though it doesn’t use an all-inclusive noun (whatever that would be) it includes everybody. And people used to understand that. But language is so discombobulated these days, even most college grajits don’t know what words mean anymore.

But I digress.

Anyway…

Are you ready to dive in? Good. Here goes…

New man characteristics and a couple of statistics

How do you know what are good new man characteristics?

Well, let’s say a guy tells you, “I’ve turned over a new leaf. I’m a new man.” OK, fine. But just saying those words doesn’t make it true. And how many people have fallen for that line from behind false lips? A pastor I used to know said, “Truer words were never spoken through falser teeth.”

But what if there were a set of identifiers you could use to determine if you (or someone else) is a genuine “new man?” Wouldn’t that be handy?

Guess what?

There IS a set of identifiers like that. If you wanna know if someone is truly a “new man,” look for characteristics like:

  • tender mercies,
  • kindness,
  • humility,
  • meekness, and
  • longsuffering;

And also watch that “new man” to see if he (or she) is “bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another.”

But most importantly, be sure you can tell that he (or she) has “put on love, which is the bond of perfection.”

Yeah, there it is again…

That love thing I’m always talking about. As much as it’s mentioned in Paul’s writings, you might get the impression it ranks high in God’s standards. And it does. In fact, it’s numero uno. (That’s Mexican for Tip Top)

Just in case you haven’t clicked any of the links I’ve already shared, I’ll tell you that this info comes straight from Colossians in the New Testament. And after all those identifiers and characteristics, Paul wrote what I call the musician’s commission. It goes a little something like this…actually just like this…

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

So, consider me singing to you today.
Consider these spiritual things I say.
I hope they go with you from place to place.
From my heart to yours, musically, with God’s grace.

Another podcast interview with little ol' you know who

I was recently did another podcast interview with a young guy named Pablo Acosta. His fairly new show is called Benchin in the Kitchen. And I confess I don’t know what that means. But I picture resistance training with a set of weights. Of course, I could be way off. But that doesn’t matter. Pablo is a guy with an obvious heart for the Lord. And he said some nice things about me. So, he can call his show whatever he wants.

“An amazing episode with a brother in Christ that has the following ministries: Book Builder – Podcast Publisher – Music Maker – Word Worker in Colorado Springs – Host of THE The Power of God’s Love Podcast. I met this amazing person through Audry.io website where I got to hear his podcast and I was inspired to bring him in. Another podcast interview with little ol' you know who

This episode with Pablo was another podcast interview with an eternal perspective.

I like knowing there are still some younger people out there who are willing to sacrifice time and resources to talk about God. And to share His message of hope and eternal life. Because every generation needs to know that.

Pablo’s description of his podcast says, “A podcast about Christian men and women that exercise and feed their faith daily. We are here to provide insight into their daily routines that keep them connected to the vine with the hope that you may receive wisdom and inspiration ro pursue Jesus daily. Holy Spirit driven and inspired.”

That’s a noble aspiration. And I wish Pablo continued growth in wisdom and discernment. And I hope his efforts help many more people understand there’s more to life than this busted up old world.

Listen to the whole Interview with Pablo and me and leave him a 5 star review so he can reach more people.

Rockin the boat and hittin the note

I hope you’re not rockin the boat today. Because the world has enough troublemakers without you chimin’ in. And if you don’t know what I’m talkin’ about, then you probably shouldn’t even be reading this. Because you just won’t understand. And it’s probably a matter of your lack of education. Or enlightenment. Or esotericism.

Yeah, you just don’t get it.

All you rockin the boat do-gooders should be seen and not heard.

“Wow, Tony. Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed or what?”

Well, hopefully you’ve been reading my articles and listening to my podcast episodes long enough to detect my dripping sarcasm. But just in case you’re new to my wry Rhyme and Reason wit and wisdom, I’m not actually attacking do-gooders.

In fact, I are one. Or at least I aspire to be one.

“But what in the world are you talkin’ about then, Tony?”

Ok, I’ll get to that. But first, let me tell you a little story (one of thousands) about my full-time performing days. In my repertoire of cover songs I had a few personal favorites. Mostly I sang for the audience and what they wanted to hear. But some songs were on my list just because I liked ’em.

And one of those songs was called “Sit Down, You’re Rockin The Boat.”

It was written by Frank Loesser and published in 1950. And it was one of the songs featured in the musical “Guys and Dolls” and performed by Stubby Kaye. I talked about another song Stubby sang in that movie. And you can check that out here.

Anyway…

A much cooler version of that song was done by Don Henley. And you might remember him from the Eagles. Right? And apparently Henley’s version was on the soundtrack to a movie called “Leap of Faith” with Steve Martin. But I didn’t see that movie. And from what I can deduce, I’m glad I didn’t.

So…as you read the lyrics carefully…you might notice the subtle snub.

And I mean an oh so slight…well…slight. And I think most people miss it altogether.

But it takes a close look and listen. I’ll include the lyrics, and hopefully nobody’s gonna come after me for copyright reasons. And if you’ve never heard Don Henley’s version, you can check it out on YouTube. It’s sort of a reggae style, which I enjoy, and it’s the style I followed when I sang it live.

It has a little bit of the “plank in your own eye” message. But there’s also the hidden sarcasm toward people who would dare claim to know the difference between right and wrong. And the words mix in just a little bit of false doctrine to help prop up the straw man.

But, all that being said, I liked the “vibe” of the song enough to include it in my nightly repertoire. And I made sure to toss in some of my signature replacement lyrics when I sang it live.

So, there you go. A little backstory to an old song you probably never gave a second thought to before.

I dreamed last night I was on the boat to heaven.
By some chance I had brought my dice along.
And there I stood and I hollered someone save me.
But the passengers they knew right from wrong.

And the people all said sit down
Sit down you’re rockin the boat
The people all said sit down
Sit down you’re rockin the boat

Cause the devil will drag you under
By the sharp lapels of your checkered coat.
Sit down, sit down, sit down you’re rockin the boat.

Oooh Oooh Oooh (scat)

As I sailed with those passengers to heaven
By some chance
I found a bottle in my fist
And there I stood
Nicely passing out the whiskey
But the passengers were bound to resist

And the people all said sit down
Sit down you’re rockin the boat
The people all said sit down
Sit down you’re rockin the boat

Cause the devil will drag you under
By the sharp lapels of your checkered coat
Sit down Sit down
Sit down you’re rockin the boat

Oooh Oooh Oooh

As we sailed
On that tiny boat to heaven
A great big wave
Came and washed me overboard
And as I sank
Oh I hollered someone save me
That’s the moment I woke up, thank the lord

And I said to myself sit down
Sit down you’re rockin the boat
I said to myself sit down
Sit down you’re rockin the boat

Cause the devil will drag you under
By the sharp lapels of your checkered coat
Sit down, sit down, sit down you’re rockin the boat.
(repeat to end)

Right and wrong have been different all along

It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. Typically I don’t watch events such as the confirmation of a so-called “supreme court justice nominee.” And I haven’t actually watched the sequence of events in Amy Barrett’s hearings either. Because we don’t have a TV in our house. And I don’t wanna stream it. Because it’s just weird to watch a bunch of so-called “legislators” who mostly don’t know the difference between right and wrong ask questions as though they do.

Right and wrong have been different all along

Right and wrong, by the way, are not determined in the halls of congress.

If you and I had never been born, there would still be moral laws in effect. And whether anyone believes he or she can manipulate those laws into something else is irrelevant to that fact.

So, when I see a shared video, on social media, with a senator framing a question for the prospective judge, I can tell what their agenda is just by how long it takes to actually express a question. And it’s more fun to watch paint dry than it is to listen to fools drone on about their pet agendas.

And all this drama and theater to determine the fate of one person in one ridiculous position of authority.

“Gosh, Tony. You sure are opinionated about it.”

Hmm…is that your opinion?

Anyway…

There are only a few actual laws in the universe.

They’re indisputable, incontrovertible, and irrefutable.

All the other volumes and volumes of blah blah that’s delivered up, debated on, and distributed to the country aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. Or the hard drives their stored in. And they’ll all be consumed in fire one day. Never to see the light of day again.

But until that day, expect more confusion, obfuscation, subjective morality, and legal positivism to rule this world. Because, just like it’s been from almost the beginning of mankind, self wants to be God. At least for any and all who hate Him and His law. And that means blurring the lines between right and wrong.

So, be diligent to find out what is true.
Let it in your heart to live inside of you.
Then, no matter what those others ever do
You’ll know Truth will always win as it shines through.

Vindicated, liberated, you can be exonerated

Who has never felt the burning need to be vindicated. And for a little more explanation, check out these synonyms for that word. Acquitted. Absolved. Exonerated. Liberated. And the dictionary says an informal definition is “let off the hook.” Did you ever do something bad and wish you could be let off the hook for it?

Yeah. Me neither.

Vindicated, liberated, you can be exonerated

But what makes you worthy of being vindicated for bad stuff you do?

I’m gonna go out on a limb, here, and say…uh…probably nothing. Especially if you’ve never repented of it.

“Uh oh, honey. Tony’s using those old-fashioned words of guilt again. Where’d I put the TV guide?”

Yeah, I’m gonna give you a suggestion. And I’d say 90% of the people who read (or hear) this won’t do it. Because most people don’t wanna be shaken out of their cool, dark comfort zones. But if you’re one of the 10% who will follow this suggestion, try this.

Log into your Prime account. And go to Prime Videos. Then, just scroll through the movie listings. And in basically every genre the movies…and their corresponding titles and thumbnail pictures…are a muddy walk through darkness. In fact, I’ll share some titles with you…

Drowning Mona
The Contract
Trauma Center
Secret Window
Mystery Road

And I could go on and on. But check out the visuals that go with those. They really set the dark mood.

There must be a lot of dark and hopeless hearts out there. Because all those movies and movie ideas don’t make themselves up. And I believe it’s also reasonable to say those dark and hopeless hearts are looking for answers in all the wrong places. So, they find themselves in a downward spiral “feeling” like there’s no way out.

Instead of writing scripts that express all that darkness and hopelessness, they’d be much better off talking to their Creator. And asking Him to help. And a great example of that humility can be found in a song written by a king.

Yeah, King David wanted to be vindicated, too.

If you think Amy Barrett is being scrutinized, you ain’t seen nothing. Imagine asking God to examine you. And I’m talking about examination that goes all the way into your heart and mind. Now, that’s scrutiny.

But David wrote, in Psalm 26, “Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; Try my mind and my heart…”

In other words, he’s asking for his mind and his heart to be put on trial. And he knows, full well, he’ll be found guilty. Because, later in the Psalm, he says, “Redeem me and be merciful to me.”

And that’s the right way to get vindication. Through humility.

But who can be that humble these days? Right? Especially when you’re bombarded with messages of self-affirmation. Oh yeah, grab a mirror and look yourself in the eyes, and repeat…

“I am successful. I am confident. And I am powerful. I am strong. I am getting better and better every day. All I need is within me right now.”

I borrowed those right off a self-affirmation site. And notice how they start with “I am.”

Ironic.

Because it’s only the great I AM who is worthy of all that admiration.

But what do I know. Right? I’m just spouting off old-fashioned words of guilt. No future in that.

Unless you can admit your guilt is real
And focus on more than the way you feel,
You’ll never come to terms with what is true,
Or trust the One who vindicated you.

Stay tuned,

Breathe normally while I talk about this formally

R.A.D.S. Last week that acronym came up in my life. And if you’ve dealt with it, you know what a nuisance (at best) it can be. The letters stand for “Reactive Airways Disease Syndrome.” But regardless of what you call it, I can tell you it’s absolutely no fun when you can’t breathe normally.

Breathe normally while I talk about this formally

You don’t know how vital it is to breathe normally until you can’t.

Well, on a certain level you do. Because you breathe in and out without even thinking about it. Right? And that’s the way it should be. After all, what a pain if you literally had to think about each breath. How could you focus on anything else.

But when something happens and you can’t get enough air in and out of your lungs, it’s amazing how focused you get on just breathing. And your focus increases in direct proportion to your inability to breathe.

I believe each person is born with a keen sense of survival. A driving force to stay alive. And that reminds me of that famous line from “Last of the Mohicans” (the one with Daniel Day Lewis and Madeleine Stowe). It’s the line where Daniel’s character tells Madeleine’s character, “Stay alive. I will find you.”

Anyway…

Your body might feel like it’s betraying you…mine has sure felt that way for quite a while now. But your spirit/soul is what pushes you to fight for life.

OK, I wrote that last line, and I just read it back to myself. And just so you know, it’s not like I’m on life support over here. Far from it. I’m just dealing with acute physical issues right now. And I’m sharing why we humans can, and should, always fight for life.

On the life level, I’m no different than anyone else on the planet. Everyone is in a lifelong battle for life. It’s just that sometimes that battle becomes an individually focused struggle. And I can’t imagine what it must be like for someone who doesn’t believe in God.

Every breath you take points to God and demonstrates His love and creativity.

So, I wanna tell you that I care about you,
How the world would just not be the same without you.
And I hope that you’re aware
Of eternal love and care
Your Creator makes available throughout you.

Comic books and heroes, too. But I had something else to do.

Comic books were a really big deal to a lot of other guys I knew when I was a kid. And I remember going to a couple of my friends’ houses and being amazed at how many boxes of comic books they had. Every once in a great while, I’d get one. Or I’d spend some time reading theirs. But not for long. And not very often. Because something else sparked my passion much more. Maybe even infinitely more.

Comic books and heroes, too. But I had something else to do.

Comic books and superheroes were no match for my obsession.

You know how it is when you latch on to something you really love? And how you can’t seem to get enough? And how you’ll look for any excuse and any opportunity to connect with it? Well, I’m no different.

I just read a dictionary definition for the word “obsession.” It said, “an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind.” And it gave an example of how the word can be used: “He was in the grip of an obsession he was powerless to resist.”

OK, so maybe obsession isn’t quite the word. Because I definitely wasn’t powerless to resist. But I sure didn’t want to. Because the object of my obsession gave me a certain kind of pleasure like nothing else in my life.

I can see how the other guys could get caught up with the ongoing stories in their comic books. And I remember being impressed with a couple of the characters, Spiderman and Silver Surfer. I even bought some of those. They were mostly well written. And the art was impressive. Especially the bold colors. So, there was a lot for eager young eyes to consume.

But they were all flickering candles. What interested me represented something more like the sun.

And I took multiple classes to help me master my new love.

But that wasn’t enough.

I found mentors who’d help me go even further by working with me after school. And even after that I’d find private places where no one could interrupt me as I worked on it all alone. Then, when I got old enough to drive, I’d use driving time for even more attention to my obsession. Or I’d find some secluded place to park.

Yeah, I was obsessed with it. And I wanted to get really good at it. And I did.

Good enough to make a living with those skills I developed.

If you know me, you know I’m talking, of course, about music.

Specifically…singing.

While the other guys spent hours devouring the Marvel and DC stories, I spent those same hours practicing my vocal scales. My thirds and fifths. And how to reach the highest, and lowest, notes possible.

And how to maintain my voice for the long haul. Endurance. Vocal stamina. It worked out well, too. Because I used to get bookings where I sang 9 hours a day.

The only reason I bring it up today is because I’m still dealing with lung issues. And I miss being able to sing every day. But I’m also still working hard each day to clear up my lungs. That includes the latest appointments with a pulmonologist. I’ll find out more about what he suggests in the next few weeks.

So, to those of you who have been sending those “warm wishes”and praying for me, thank you. It means more than you know. And I hope to be singing for you again before long.

Stay tuned,
