Comfort one another - and happy thanksgiving from Tony and the The Power of God's Love Podcast

Do you comfort one another?
Or leave it to someone else?

I’m not a language scholar, and I don’t play one on TV. But I love language. I love words. How they’re formed. Why they mean what they mean. Where they originated. Take the word “comfort” for example. There’s a place in the Bible where Paul tells believers to comfort one another and to edify one another. And when he said that, he was talking about some of the most important things to ever happen in all of history. So, imagine applying his message to your regular, ordinary days.

What does it mean to comfort one another?

You might see someone who seems sad and think, “Hmm…maybe I should cheer them up?” So, you give them a greeting card, or a flower, or a box of chocolates. But to truly comfort someone else means you’ll do what you can to strengthen them as much as you can. Ultimately it’s up to them to actually take the comfort, or strengthening, and face their day with courage. But it’s up to YOU to give that comfort. But how? Where do you start?

By coincidence, as I began to write this section, my old dog, Zazzo, began to do this thing he does when something’s bothering him. He doesn’t actually whimper, but he sort of makes the breath sound like he’s going to whimper. And he’s nothing if not persistent. Of course, I’m writing this important message about how to comfort one another, so naturally I can’t be bothered right now. So, I snap my fingers at him and point…which sometimes gets him to stop.

But this time, instead of stopping the whimper-less breath sounds and lying down, he got up (which is quite difficult for him at his age of almost 15) and came over to me. I sat the laptop on the coffee table in front me and waited for him to get to me. When he did, he leaned his head against my knee. How could I resist? I pet his head and stroked his neck, which he likes, and after a few seconds, he turned around and went back to his bed. Now, he’s lying down with no anxious breathing.

Sometimes a caring touch is all the comfort someone needs.

Never underestimate the power of touch. Your hand on someone’s shoulder. Or lips to someone’s cheek. The emotional healing power of simply touching someone with care is a gift from God. Use it whenever you can. I’m not talking about that nonsense you see from televangelists where they “heal” people on a large stage by smacking them on the forehead. Don’t buy that junk food.

Get the living-water-enriched meat of God’s word into your soul and spirit. That’s where strength and wisdom are. And that’s where you’ll discover how to comfort one another. Because that’s where true love is. Dive into those 13 letters Paul wrote, and you’ll see how God’s word and grace truly are sufficient.

Will you be able to comfort someone else today? Or will you be too busy? I encourage you (another word I love) to set your laptop or mobile device aside and use your power of touch…combined with God’s word. You can’t lose.

Here are the lyrics to the song included in this week’s episode of the The Power of God’s Love Podcast

I Give You All

You gave my heart
A way to touch you, Lord.
You gave my eyes
A gift to see and recall.
You gave me stars…
To guide me through my lonely fear.
I give you all…I give you all.

You gave me words,
And they can reach the sky.
You gave my soul
Salvation out of the fall.
You gave me dawn,
To savor all you gave me, Lord.
I give you all…I give you all.

I give you all…my worries and my fear.
I give you all.
And I can feel you near.
I give you all.
You dry up every tear.
I give you all.
Yes, I give you all.

You gave me nights…
That shine your silver stars.
You gave me time,
To change my ways and stand tall…
You gave me hope,
That in my weakness I am strong.
I give you all.

To discover the elephant in the room of creation, follow the money.

If you knew there was an elephant in the room,
would you feed it?

I’m sure you’ve heard that expression…right? When there’s an obvious problem, but no one is talking about it or seems to want to talk about it, that’s the metaphorical way of putting it…there’s an elephant in the room. But what if that problem was a lie everybody was willing to spread and perpetuate? Would you be willing to feed that elephant? Well, that’s exactly what’s going on in the scientific (and I use that term loosely) community.

When was the last time you saw, or read about, a book writing itself? Or have you ever heard of a website with tons of pages simply popping into existence? Where have you ever witnessed a baby being born without the key ingredients from the mother and father? The answers, of course, to these questions are never, no, and nowhere. Know why? Because they’re all information based, and information never creates itself.

Complex information is the elephant in the room.

I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s worth repeating. The genetic information contained in each of the trillions of cells in your body is roughly equivalent to about 4000 books. Wrap your mind around that for a minute. 4000 books of information in each of your cells. All that complex information…and it’s in trillions of cells. If you believe all that could simply create itself, you have a lot more faith in dirt, goo, and chance than I do.

Scientists KNOW their experiments always point to intelligence…even the atheistic and evolutionary scientists. So, why do they insist on perpetuating the myth of evolution and chance? Would you believe money plays a huge part? I know…gasp! Yeah, the vast majority of “research” scientists are funded by grants from the government, large donors, and other sources. They’re always on the lookout for this funding because their lifestyle and prestige depend on it.

Don’t take my word for it, though. You should go read this article “Follow The Money” on CreationScience.com. It’s eye-opening to see how intolerant the so-called “open-minded” scientific community is about where evidence leads.

Evidence is like an elephant.

Elephants are enormous. And when a herd of them starts running, there’s almost no stopping them. They’ll trample anything in the way, too. That’s how evidence for creation is, too. It’s enormous. And if you’ll go where it leads, it’ll trample all the fairy tales and myths like life coming from non-life. Or mutations making something better. Evidence is flowing through your veins right now. It’s so vast and amazing, we can barely comprehend it. The fact that you and I were created is written in every cell of your body…and mine…and everybody else’s.

So, instead of chasing money for research from a government, organizations, or individuals who hate God, scientists should be intellectually honest and simply go where the evidence leads. And when it leads to a living God who created them and loves them, they should rejoice because that leads to eternal life. What an awesome transformation would occur if they’d replace the elephant in the room with Jesus.

What do you think? Am I being a simpleton? Too naive? Or is it something worth continuing to fight for?

The Living End

How can I explain the numbers in the rain?
I’d like to help illuminate the pathways to your mind.
But I am just a man; I’ll do the best I can
I’ll show you where to look, and I’ll tell you this:
It isn’t behind

It’s a firecracker and a windchime.
It’s a loudspeaker and a street mime.
And it’s the friction of invisible wind…It’s the living end.

I should write a book; give back what I took.
It’s the kind of thing that multiplies
When you give it away.
The knowledge and the lack;
The rails that make the track
Tend to open doors and open hearts
To what they can say.

It’s a sand pebble and the fired glass.
It’s a skyscraper and a mountain pass.
And it’s the friction of invisible wind…It’s the living end.

Oh, and I’m sure I can’t make you believe,
If it’s not within your will.
Oh, and it’s been around since Adam and Eve
And it never stood still.

How can I extol the matters of the soul?
I was never one to shake my fist and preach in the square.
No, I just always knew that faith would lead me through,
And there has to be a larger life that lasts forever out there.

(repeat 1st chorus)

Mercy on me - it protects me from hopelessness

I need mercy on me. How about you?

I’ve lived an interesting life so far. I’ve already lived longer than my Dad and his two brothers. And it’s already longer than several other relatives and friends I’ve known. But I don’t know if it would have been this long if it wasn’t for God’s mercy on me. I don’t want to imagine the hopelessness I’d feel if I didn’t have my Creator to lean on, trust in, and talk to. Even if I lived to be 100, I’d still know that it was gonna come to an end and then where would I be?

Mercy on me - it protects me from hopelessness

Have you ever thought about why you’ve lived as long as you have? Well, I think about those things. And I know life’s not an accident. Or a set of processes none of us have control over. You and I were put here on purpose. Who did it? And why? Does it even matter? Should you try to figure it out…or just live your life the best way you can?

Here’s why the mercy I mentioned matters…

You and I do things we shouldn’t do. If I were to make a list of the things I’ve said or done that I shouldn’t have, I’d have to dedicate every article I write and every podcast episode I record to those things. But here’s the ultimate cool thing that trumps all those other things on my “bad” list: God’s mercy on me. He is able and willing to wipe my bad slate clean, and all I gotta do is humble myself, ask Him to, and trust that He will.

It’s important to know God isn’t making you and me do the bad things we do. Even though we’re here on purpose, we’re not robots. And God hasn’t planned our lives for us. He doesn’t work that way…in spite of all the weak messages to the contrary you might hear from televangelists and churches. Instead, here’s what God does for you…He gives you a brain and a soul. And He wants to see what you’ll do with them. You’re free to use them for God…or against Him…to a point. Talk about taking risks?!

God’s mercy on me gives me more time to make a difference.

My mission, in this life, is to use the gifts of words and music God gave me to share the faith, hope, and love available to anyone who wants it. Anyone who’ll ask for it.

Since I didn’t receive what I deserve a long time ago, I’ve been able to grow and learn more about my Creator. That has given me much more knowledge and wisdom to share with anyone and everyone who’ll listen or read. And that word…anyone…is important because it’s both plural and singular. Any is synonymous with all. One means only one…for example, you. You’re one of the any.

So, anyone means every person in the world. You’ll find the spirit of that word in one of the most famous Bible verses. John 3:16. Click that link and read it. I’m sharing a song about God’s love and mercy in the The Power of God’s Love Podcast version of this message. Lyrics are below.

Do you know the mercy I’m talking about? Have you experienced it? Or are you struggling with doubt and fear about where you’ll be forever? Either way, write to me and let me know. I’d like to help you see how life makes sense.

Give Me What I Deserve

You gave me life…
Gave me love, and gave me freedom.
You took my sins…
And You nailed “˜em, and You beat “˜em…

“˜Cause this person who you bought never had the nerve.
So I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

You gave me hope,
Gave me bread and living water.
You gave your blood…
When I led you to the slaughter.

But you never even fought or let your focus swerve.
And I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

Lord, don’t give me…what I deserve.
If I stand in the middle of the road,
Nudge me to Your side.
Lord, don’t give me…what I deserve…
“˜Cause I’m the reason and the cause
Why Jesus died…But then He rose again!

You gave me joy…
Gave Your word you’d leave me never.
You gave Your life so that I could live forever.

And on this earthly azure dot I can choose to serve.
So I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

Life is not fair - find out what you can do about it.

Life is not fair. And guess what…

Play

Get The The Power of God's Love Podcast Delivered to Your Device Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | Android | Pandora | iHeartRadio | Podchaser | Podcast Index | TuneIn | Deezer | RSS | More

It’s all your fault. And mine. And the other people around the world. Even the ones who think their essence is what makes the world turn. Life is not fair because you live in a world we humans broke…a long time ago. Before you say it wasn’t you who ate the fruit from the wrong tree, I gotta say this. “You would have done the same thing!” You would have wanted to be your own king or queen or god. How do I know?

I know you would have done the same thing Adam and Eve did because you have. Admit it. You’ve wanted everyone to realize you’re the cat’s meow…right? You’ve chosen to do things you know you shouldn’t have…right? And if you’re gonna be truly honest (I hope you will), you’ve made more bad decisions in your life than good. Can I get an amen? I’m right there with you dude…or dudette.

Life’s not fair, and that’s not something that should ever hold you back.

Keep working hard to be better than you’ve been. Say this with me, “I’m better than I was yesterday, but not as good as I’ll be tomorrow.” There. Don’t you feel better? And isn’t that all that matters? Feelings? NO!

Your feelings will keep telling you life ain’t fair. And before you know it, you’ll give in to those knucklehead feelings and start to go back to those knucklehead bad decisions. But when you decide (and the power to decide is totally in you) to change bad feelings into better ones by using the logic and reason God gave you, your life will get at least a little more fair. Not perfect, but it WILL make sense. Then you’ll be more sensible.

And being sensible (using wisdom and discernment) will take you down a road where fairness won’t matter a fraction as much as Truth. What do you think? Does your life seem unfair? Or isn’t it fairly decent after all?

Not Fair

You’re born to parents you don’t get to choose,
And you just have to trust that they care.
They pick your clothes and your food and your stuff,
And you learn fast that life is not fair.

As you grow up you discover some things
About water and mountains and air.
You think your big brain should earn you rewards,
And you find out that life is not fair.

One day you wake in a place of your own,
Watch the news, and see pain everywhere.
You decide you can’t ignore it away,
And you’ll help because life is not fair.

Then, when you serve others, you one day find
A real joy that, before, wasn’t there.
And living will glow in a whole new light
Even though this old life isn’t fair.

Because I can - sometimes it's the best answer.

“Because I can” is actually a good answer.

Did you ever get into stupid kid arguments when you were a kid? Well, when I was kid, arguing with a brother or sister like most kids do, I was as good as anybody with those goofy kid answers to stupid kid questions. Most of the questions started with “why?” So, of course, most of the answers started with “Because.” I can think of one instance where the question was something like, “Why do you get to use those? Mom said we couldn’t.” And the answer was simply, “Because I can.”

Because I can - sometimes it's the best answer.

Have you ever thought about the source of love? It’s difficult to think about how it starts or where it is inside of you, isn’t it? As a little kid, your first experiences with love begin with your parents or grandparents. Of course, you don’t have a clue why you love them, you just know you do. But how do you automatically know how to love? How do those feelings come up inside you when you’re not even old enough to ponder them?

Because you can love from the earliest age means you must be born with love.

And if you’re born with love…or the ability to love…how did it get there? Through your mother’s umbilical cord? That doesn’t seem likely since love isn’t made of flesh and bones. Maybe it was through the sound of your mother’s voice and the nurturing you received in the womb. Hmm…again, I don’t think love, the deepest emotion a human being can express, can simply be transferred through coziness.

Here’s what I’ve found to be true. Love has a starting place. And it’s transferred and transmitted through your soul and spirit. The only way that can happen is through and from the starting place. That place is the person of God. Your creator made you with a soul/spirit full of His unending and boundless love. It’s because God loves that we can love. Does that make sense to you? If so…or not…leave me a comment or send me a message and tell me about it. Here are the lyrics to a song I wrote about it. You can hear it when you listen to the The Power of God’s Love Podcast.

Because I Can Love

What made You think
That I was worth the risk You took?
What made You take the time
To write Your Holy Book?
I don’t believe I’d give myself a second look,
But You did because You love.

You made a world
That was as perfect as could be,
But then I broke it
When You gave it all to me…
By going through the gate
You made to set me free.
This You did because You love…me.

Because You love me so…in spite of all You know…
Because You did the most that You could ever do…
Because I clearly see…evidence of You in me…
Because I can love…I do love…You!

You put a life
And a will inside my soul.
You knew true love
Would be to give me full control.
But knowing You is all that ever makes me whole.
I trust You because You love…me.

I can live because You live!
I can love because You love!

Caterpillar metamorphosis - another proof of God's glory

Caterpillar Metamorphosis – Quite a change!

If you’d really like somebody to change…or if certain people are making you mad, tell them to go liquefy themselves. I bet that’s something they’d never expect you to say. The reason I use that term is because that’s what a caterpillar does to become a butterfly. It actually liquefies itself. Can you imagine?! It’s known as caterpillar metamorphosis, and it’s one of the weirdest and most beautiful transformations in all of creation.

Imagine if you could take a total jerk, stick him in a specially designed cocoon, liquefy him, and wait a little while for him to solidify, and then let him back out as a totally unselfish nice guy. Wouldn’t that be awesome?! If only changing somebody’s personality was as easy as changing a crawling caterpillar into a flying butterfly. But I’m talking about the real world…so I gotta keep it real. Right?

Caterpillar metamorphosis is as real and amazing as creation gets.

The fact that this little worm-like creature can create a cocoon around itself and then liquefy itself defies all the silly evolutionary ideas and notions. But when you consider the whole process was pre-programmed by the ultimate designer, it makes sense. I believe God designed things like caterpillar metamorphosis just to show us His amazing creativity. And His attention to intricate details. Like a Monarch butterfly being able to navigate for 3000 miles using only its antennae and tiny, little butterfly brain. Think you could do that well with no GPS, maps app, or climate controlled car? I don’t think I could.

It might seem like a small thing to talk about caterpillars and butterflies and how they illuminate God’s glory. But it’s actually in the smallest things where that glory looms largest. Are you convinced yet? If not, send me a message or leave me a comment and tell me why. In the meantime, enjoy the lyrics to this song. Or listen to it in the podcast.

Shine In Your Glory

My love for You, Lord,
Is like a river.
Your love is like…the infinite sky.

You guide my steps
Through this worldly desert,
And I will hold your name most high.

So, I will shine in Your glory…
And I will raise my hands to the sky…
Yes, I will shine in Your glory…
And I will praise my Savior on high.

My joy is flowing out into your ocean.
Your grace rains down…in my open heart.

You take my hand
When the road is narrow,
And you’re my Light when things get dark.

So, I will shine in Your glory…
And I will raise my hands to the sky…
Yes, I will shine in Your glory…
And I will praise my Savior on high.

Shine in your glory (repeat 3 times)

The key to success in 13 letters

Wanna know the key to success in only 13 letters?

Before I share the key to success, I think it would be a good idea to define success. Don’t you? After all, if it’s only a vague concept, how will you ever know if you’ve reached it? Plus, if you never know if and when you’re successful, your life will feel meaningless and out of control. And who doesn’t like to feel in control. OK, here’s the definition of success.

Truly successful people will live forever.

How about that? Did you think I was gonna share some internet marketing secrets? Or maybe some special tips on how to think positive and be positive? Nothing wrong with those things, but they don’t truly define success. If you can build empires, employ tens of thousands of people, change the world…even for the better…but you never trust your Creator, you will lose your soul. And that’s the complete opposite of success. That’s failure on a scale you can’t imagine.

OK, so I’ve talked about what success isn’t. So, what do I mean when I say the key to success in only13 letters? Is it like the DaVinci code using 13 special letters in an obscure alphabet? Far from it. In fact, no letters could be less obscure than these. You’ll find them in the best selling book of all time.

I’m talking about the 13 letters Paul wrote to the Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians, and Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. Over and over in those letters Paul shares the key to success. And it’s clearly trusting in Jesus to change you and give you eternal life.

Without eternal life all your efforts lead to failure.

What are you doing that’s going to make a difference for now and forever? Do you think a new computer software, or artificial intelligence, or self-driving car is gonna be a lasting legacy? Will you be able to create something so powerful the world will never forget your name? If so, I say…think again. But feel free to leave me a comment or send me a message showing me where I miss the point.

A word to the confounded,
Pour light into your eyes.
If you expect more than neglect,
Get wisdom; yeah get wise.

Stay tuned,

Be patient with all - and you're gonna need God's help.

What does it take to be patient with all?

I’ll let you in on a little secret right away. To be patient with all takes a lot more strength and wisdom than I have on my own. In fact, left to my own ideas and whims, I’m not patient with much of anyone these days. Do you find yourself in that frame of mind? If so, would it help if I told you God helps you be patient? That is…if you let Him.

Now, don’t beat yourself up if you realize you’re not always letting God help you be patient with all. You’re human, and you fail and fall. Believe me, I’m telling myself that, too, because I need to hear it as much as anybody. Here’s an example of why I say that.

My patience often goes out the window when I’m driving.

You might have heard (how could you not?) that Colorado legalized pot back in 2014. But what does that have to do with driving? A lot, actually. I drive on the roads, streets, and interstate practically every day. And something I notice every day is the scent of pot coming through the vents and windows of my pickup…as I’m driving. I’m not talking about simply walking the neighborhoods…although you almost can’t walk a neighborhood without smelling pot, too.

No, I’m talking about drivers smoking pot. Elgielene and I notice people of all ages with a joint in their hand or puffing on one as they roll down the road. Besides not being legal, it’s dangerous. If you’re a dope smoker, here’s a statistic I’m sure you won’t care about but is nevertheless true. When you’re smoking weed, your reaction time is significantly slower. Sorry to be such a killjoy, but facts are facts.

It’s difficult to be patient with all when so many are baked on weed.

In fact, I can’t be that patient without God’s help. I have to deal with what I call “drifters” as I make my way across town. I’m talking about drivers who can’t seem to be deliberate in their actions. They drift into different lanes. Or they seem to have to make up their mind about turning…and then drift around the corner. And if I added up all the time I’ve waited on those drivers to respond to the changing lights, I could possibly add a few days to my life. See what I mean about me lacking patience? And see what I mean about needing God’s help?

OK, I know there are lots of reasons people resort to smoking pot. They use excuses like pain, depression, or physical “conditions”. And they’ll say a guy like me, who never smoked pot, will never understand. On some level, I suppose that’s correct. But I DO know that inhaling smoke of any kind is not a better answer than real foods, fresh air, sunshine, and plenty of filtered water.

I just shared a patience flaw in my character.

How about you? Are you able to be patient with all? If not, where is your achilles heel? And are you looking to God for help? Leave me a comment or send me a message about it.

“Be patient. Be wary. Sing songs and be merry.
Then focus your attention on more than this world’s dimension”

Gotta love a lab like Nestle

Gotta love a Lab

As I begin to write this, it’s been less than 24 hours since one of our best buddies died. And I’m sadder than I’ve been in years. I already miss his face more than words can express. His name was Nestlē. He was also known as Nestlē, the crunch bar…and my wife also affectionately called him “my chocolate mess”. Those names came about because he was what’s commonly referred to as a Chocolate Lab…a brown Labrador Retriever. He was a great reason why I say you gotta love a Lab.

Back in 2003, Elgielene (my wife) and I had been living in the first house we ever bought for about 9 months. And she mentioned one day how she thought it would be great to get a dog. You know…since we finally had our own house instead of an apartment. So, we started perusing the papers for puppies. We had long since decided that, if we ever got a dog, we’d like a Lab. And we found an ad for a new litter of them in Franktown, Colorado. It wasn’t the closest to where we lived, but their description piqued our interest, so off we drove.

Gotta love a Lab and his 8 siblings…

When we arrived at the owner’s place, out in the hilly countryside, the first thing we saw was a back yard teeming with Labrador puppies. The mama dog had given birth to nine puppies, and at that point they were about 7 1/2 weeks old. Eight of them had that classic roly-poly Labrador puppy look…plump, snub-nosed, and falling clumsily all over themselves. And one didn’t look quite so healthy. His ears were too big for his body, and his eyes looked puffy…as though he was battling a bad cold or something.

But the sickly looking dog caught my eye and captured my heart because he could handle himself better than his brothers and sisters. Even though he was the runt of the litter and didn’t appear healthy, he could literally bound over the others while barking a spirit-filled bark…as if to say, “I’m here, by golly, and everybody’s gonna know it!”

You’re probably thinking, “A-ha! You took the runt home, named him Nestlē, and now you’re recollecting those first memories.” Nope. But I did notice how no one else wanted to pick up the runt and look him over. And the owners told us they “let nature take its course” when it came to runts. I told my wife we needed to buy the runt. My heart couldn’t simply “let nature take its course”.

And my wife agreed to take the runt home with us, but…

…while I had been checking out the runt…she had been holding another puppy. She asked me to come look him over. And he was beautiful. Rich, dark chocolate brown. Classic Lab features. For all intents and purposes, a flawless puppy. But the owners were selling their puppies for $350 each, and I reminded my wife that we couldn’t afford two…and that if we didn’t take the runt, probably no one would…and he’d likely be pushed out of the feeding line by his siblings and die.

My wife agreed, somewhat reluctantly, put down the brown puppy, and we paid for the runt…a Golden Lab. We put him in the van and made the long drive home.

We named our new puppy Zazzo. It was a name I had concocted when we first began contemplating getting a dog. And the little guy would zig-zag when he walked, so it seemed to fit. During those first couple of days and nights with our new pet Elgielene kept recalling how she just couldn’t get her mind off the chocolate puppy. And she was afraid we’d made a mistake by spending so much money on a “sick dog”. So, on the third day, I relented and told her to call the people who had the puppies to see if the brown one had been purchased yet. They told her “no” and…

…we made the long drive back to the farm and bought the brownie.

I still remember staying in the van with Zazzo while my wife went in to get the new addition to the family. It was a windy day in April of 2003, and when she came walking out, hair blowing in her face and carrying the chubby little chocolate puppy, who didn’t appear pleased at all, she exclaimed with a smile, “He’s so fat!”

We put both puppies in a laundry basket and made that long drive home again. The brown boy started whimpering, and Zazzo nuzzled up to him as if to comfort him and say, “It’s OK, bro…they’re nice.”

Since there had been no plans to get two puppies, we didn’t have two names planned. And at first we just used the temporary name the previous owners had given the little chocolate guy…Hunter. He got that name because he followed his nose wherever it took him. But we knew we wanted to call him something else. Something more special. A name that wouldn’t be so common to chocolate Labs. You know…like Hershey or Mocha. After the first couple of days with two puppies, I came home from work, and Elgielene said, “I think I have the perfect name for chocolate boy. Wanna hear it?” I said, “sure”. She said…”Nestlē.” He’s my little crunch bar.” And I said, “Perfect!”

So, for the next almost 15 years the little crunch bar…who became a rather large crunch bar…was our constant companion. And anyone who can take a furry guy like Nestlē into their home and not be changed forever is a heartless so-and-so. I had been raised to believe pet dogs were to be raised outdoors and remain simply pets. But once we got to know our messy, poopy, goopy, pets…they became our friends…our family.

If you don’t love dogs, you probably don’t understand my sadness.

But if you’ve ever experienced the pet connection that can only be made with a dog, you might relate to why I say you gotta love a Lab. And, as long as I live, I’ll never forget our Nestlē crunch bar. Our chocolate mess. Those times he’d come and lay his head on my knee and look up at me with those deep, brown eyes. Or when he’d come into my studio and stand with his head between my knees looking up at me as I rehearsed or composed my music. I can still smell his special doggie scent, hear him burping, passing gas, and snoring. Yes, he snored. I miss everything about him. And my heart aches to see him again one day.

There’s nothing in the Bible that says we’ll be reunited with our beloved pets, but I love what Joni Eareckson Tada wrote in her book “Holiness in Hidden Places”… “If God brings our pets back to life, it wouldn’t surprise me. It would be just like him. It would be totally in keeping with his generous character. . . Exorbitant. Excessive. Extravagant in grace after grace.”

Wherever Nestlē is right now, I trust God that it’s perfect for him.

And I trust that he’s pain-free, struggle-free, and awaiting that day when, like it says in Romans 8:20-21, “the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” After all, Nestlē was another one of God’s most beautiful creations. And he showed me how you gotta love a Lab.

Are you dealing with the death or loss of a beloved pet? If so, I hope this brings you comfort.

You are Your own worst enemy

Who is your own worst enemy?

Have you ever done something you know you shouldn’t do…and then later, wonder why you did that? How about this? Did you ever pass up on the chance to do something good or right? You knew you should do it, but you just didn’t do it. If you’ve ever found yourself in either of those scenarios, you probably felt like your own worst enemy. Right? Well, don’t feel like it’s just you. I’ve been there. And so have just about everyone else on the planet. Even Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, struggled with that problem. But he knew why.

We all have the tendency to wanna be our own kings (or queens). It’s part of our human nature. Paul described it as “the sin that dwells within me“. You can bet if he struggled with it, you’re gonna have to deal with it, too. But how can you deal with it, when your very nature lures you into things you shouldn’t do and away from things you should do?

You are your own worst enemy when you trust in YOU.

Yeah, you might be one of the best and brightest minds of our time. But when you trust in yourself to do the right thing, all that intelligence flies out the window. There’s a great Proverb that says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” Because the allure of this world is so powerful, you and I need supernatural help. Fortunately it’s abundantly available. Even though many would have you believe all hope is lost.

Hope springs eternal when you trust in the one true, living, loving eternal Creator of Heaven, Earth, and you. Yeah, He made you, so He knows what makes you tick…better than the finest Swiss watch. Rather than trusting in your own limited knowledge, and becoming your own worst enemy in the process…why not just admit that maybe God knows the best way to live your life?

I’ve heard some Christians use that Proverb I mentioned earlier to say God is in control. They say, “see…He shall direct your paths.” And that’s not the meaning at all. Sure God will lead you, or direct you, in the right direction. But He won’t MAKE you go there. To do that He’d have to remove your freedom to choose. And He loves you too much to simply turn you into a mindless robot.

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Maybe you’ve heard that line from the 12 step program for alcoholics…yes? It’s true for just about anything wrong in your life. Not just drinking. So, no matter what issues you’re dealing with, when you admit you have a problem that you can’t overcome on your own, and then ask God for help, you’re getting back on the path He’s directing you to.

What do you say? Can you admit you’re not all that today…and ask God to direct your paths? If so, send me a message and tell me about it. I love to hear those testimonies.

Tony Funderburk is not cool and he's OK with that.

I’m not cool and I’m OK with that.

I know this may tarnish my image as a world-class cool singer songwriter forever, but I’ll say it anyway…I’ve never done drugs…not even pot. Of course, I know that means I’m not cool to most people, but I can live with that. And I don’t believe I’ve ever been what anyone would call “hot” either. But I was OK enough to get a beautiful wife. So, bam! Take that naysayers.

Tony Funderburk is not cool and he's OK with that.

Alright. Got that out of my system. It just seemed like something I needed to be completely open and “authentic” about. And now, I can see my audience fleeing to find another much cooler singer songwriter to follow. G’bye everyone. I hope you’ll come back some day. Please don’t tell anyone else what you’ve learned here today. That’s all I ask.

So…why did I never do drugs? (for anyone who may still be here) Well, I can’t take the credit. I give that to God. Thankfully I connected with Him when I was 13, and I wanted to do things and live life in a way that pleased Him. Don’t get me wrong…I didn’t succeed all the time…far from it. But during my teenage-mind-of-mush years I did pretty well. At least well enough to stay away from the substances that would have changed who I was.

It’s not cool to put your faith in the world.

After I became a professional musician and singer songwriter I had lots (and I mean lots) of opportunities to partake…especially pot and cocaine. I remember a time I was playing a very popular spot in Atlanta, Georgia. A very nice looking girl came up to me when I was on break, and said “follow me”. OK…I’m a guy, so I did. We went into another room where she pulled out her cocaine and offered me some. For me that was really weird. I said “no thanks” and that I had to get back to work, and I quickly went back to my keyboard. And there were lots of times when guys would approach me to compliment my voice or songs. When they shook my hand, there’d be a joint in it. Yeesh. They’d probably be more than a little mad to know I flushed that stuff down the toilet.

Back in the 80’s those kind of things were commonplace in the circles I played. They probably still are. I wrote a song about it called “Fly By Night”. And if you’re a The Power of God’s Love Podcast listener or subscriber, you can hear an old hotel recording of it in episode 185. For the rest of you, here are the lyrics…

You are a Dependent variable whether you admit it or not.

What does a dependent variable have to do with life?

When I was a younger guy, there was a popular singer who went by the name of Nilsson. One of my favorite songs by him was called “Without You”. And the main line said, “Can’t live, if living is without you.” Now, you might call that a metaphorical dependent variable…or at least I would…because it shows how one can’t do without the other. So…what does all that have to do with life in general, you ask? Well, first let me get that tune out of my head so I can concentrate, and then I’ll explain.

OK, you’ve heard me talk about DNA (if you’ve listened to my The Power of God’s Love Podcast), or you’ve read some of the things I’ve written about it here on the blog. Right? Maybe you’ve heard me mention how proteins are the building blocks for DNA. Yes? Alright…it’s important to talk about them both at the same time because…

DNA and proteins are each a dependent variable for the other.

In other words, you can’t have one without the other. And yet they’re separate components. Do you realize what the means? One couldn’t evolve without the other. One component couldn’t simply wait however long it took for the other to evolve into something useful. Each one is too complex. It simply couldn’t happen. But being put in place at the same time by the most brilliant scientist in existence makes perfect sense.

God designed proteins to do things like decode, store, transcribe, assemble, and protect. In fact one protein, known simply as p53, stifles cancer and protects DNA. So, how could DNA have ever survived some lengthy evolutionary process without p53 being there from the beginning? Short answer…it couldn’t.

There are intangible reasons why I trust Jesus to be my savior and creator. His love and goodness and righteousness immediately leap to mind. But I believe it’s important to share tangible, scientific evidence for God’s existence in this day and age. That’s because more and more people think science doesn’t require God. And actually quite the opposite is true.

You’re a dependent variable whether you like it or not.

You wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the one, true, living, loving Creator. It’s scientifically, mathematically, and statistically impossible that the complexity found in your 30 trillion cells could have happened and function so well simply by chance. And I don’t know why anyone would prefer it to be another way. Oh wait…yes I do. Because most people would rather be their own selfish god. Why serve, when you can be served…right?

I invite and encourage you to look into the mountains and oceans of evidence for creation. I’m confident you’ll discover much more than reasons. You’ll discover love deeper and fuller than you can ever imagine. And I have a question for you. Why would you not want that kind of love?

Now, maybe you don’t know me well enough to buy something from me, yet. Ok, let’s change that. Get to know more about me and my worldview. Broken stuff is not God's way of planning your day.

Broken stuff is not God’s way of planning your day.

When you put your faith and trust in the one true, living, loving Creator of Heaven and Earth, He’s willing to amplify your talents and use you in some awesome ways. And when you read Paul’s writings, in the New Testament, you discover how important it is to know this. You also see how God is not responsible for broken stuff in your life. In fact, He’s the one who can (and will) help you through and over that stuff. Paul said it like this: “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…”

Broken stuff is not God's way of planning your day.

This weekend the accelerator cable on my pickup broke. Usually when something like that happens, the first question out of my mouth goes something like this: “What in the world?!” Of course, once I figure out what’s going on, I typically follow that up with something like: “Oh, for cryin’ out loud!” That’s on a “good day”, naturally. And I believe that first response is the best one…”What in the world?!” I don’t believe it’s a good idea to blame God.

Broken stuff happens because of this broken world.

When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden, their actions literally broke the world and our spiritual connection to God. After they did that, everything changed. Everything began to deteriorate, and things have been going downhill ever since. You can actually trace everything bad in the world back to sin. But certainly not to God. Rust, mold, slime, germs, and ultimately death, all happen because we live in a broken world. And we broke it. Not God.

Sure, God has a plan…to ultimately bring justice back to the world He made…and make it new again. But I know beyond a shadow of a doubt He didn’t break my accelerator cable to teach me some sort of spiritual lesson. He wrote a book to teach me those lessons and help me fix broken stuff. It’s called the Bible. Have you read it?

I’m broken, but God didn’t do it.
In fact, only He can get me through it.
He heals me with love on the inside,
And I’ll live forever because Jesus died…

And rose again!

Information is beautiful because it proves God loves you enough to make only one of you.

Information is beautiful!

When you dig deep into the building blocks of human existence, you find DNA. And that doesn’t stand for Do Not Ask. It’s actually the abbreviation for Deoxyribonucleic acid. Of course, that’s a fancy schmancy name for genetic information. Even Wikipedia will tell you that. But what Wikipedia won’t generally tell you…at least not without a struggle…is where it all comes from. Genetic information is beautiful because it’s complex and vast. And vast amounts of information point to, in fact REQUIRE, a vast intelligence. After all, whatever (translate that to Who) created the vast amount of complex information, by necessity, must be even more complex and vast. C’mon, you can see that…right?

Information is beautiful because it proves God loves you enough to make only one of you.

Your information is beautiful because it’s uniquely yours.

Information inside your cells determined whether you’d have brown or blue or green eyes, and black or brown or blonde hair, and whether you’d be a boy or a girl (nothing else by the way). When you discover how complex that information is, and when you allow yourself to consider that it couldn’t have happened by accident, you begin to ponder the wonder of a living, loving, Creator God who loves you enough to make only one of you. Wow!

Think about the thoughts and memories you have floating around in your mind right now. Those thoughts and memories have no physical parts. In fact, you can’t feel, smell, taste, hear, or see them. They didn’t create themselves. Information can’t do that. It’s too complex. I know I keep saying that, but it’s because it’s vitally important to understand. The information in the DNA of each of your cells is basically equal to a library with 4000 books. To say that much data stored in the 37 trillion cells in your body happened by chance mutations is absurd and silly in the highest order.

Why would anybody prefer to believe in chance, circumstance, and mutations instead of a living, loving God who wants us to live forever. Chance, circumstance, and mutations don’t care whether you live or die…so they certainly don’t care if you live forever. Instead of fostering hope they erase it.

What will you do with this information?

Toss it aside? Make fun of it? Or will you check out the scientific links I’ve shared and see if your belief system is challenged…and maybe even changed? I hope that’s what you do because I think you’ll be glad you did.

Stay tuned,
