I think about what she said, more often, these days.

I’m talkin’ about what my Grandmother said, as I sat on her front porch snapping green beans with her. It was during a couple of years when my brother and I lived with our Dad’s parents while he worked on setting up a new home life.

Dad and Mom divorced when I was about four and my brother was two and a half. Since he was given custody of us, he asked our Grandparents to take care of us, most of the time, so he could find another wife and someone who could be the “mother figure” in our lives. This was, of course, before feminism ruined so many households. But that’s another topic for another time.

Anyway…

Back to what my Grandmother said.

And I don’t think enough old people tell young people this stuff these days.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Despite the fact that it was decades ago. Grandmother sat on her porch chair, the metal clamshell style, with a large enameled metal bowl, full of green beans from their back yard garden, in her lap. I sat in the other chair with a smaller bowl in my lap. And we snapped green beans. And she talked while I listened.

“Enjoy this peaceful, wonderful day, and don’t take it for granted,” she said. “Because, one of these days, you might be my age and most of, or all of, the people you love will be gone for good.”

I remember thinking to myself, “Why do old people talk this way?” Of course, being a pre-schooler, I couldn’t have seen how Grandmother was speaking from experience. I was too young to grasp the depth of her advice. But, even a young age, I had enough respect for my elders to listen and pay attention.

And for some reason, I enjoyed snapping green beans.

Now, let’s fast forward to THESE days.

I’m about 10 years older than Grandmother was when she gave me that advice. And as of 2021, the fullness of her prediction came true. All those people I loved, except for my brother, are gone for good. In February, it’ll be three years ago already that Mom was the last to go.

They’re all gone.

But I’m one of the fortunate ones in this world. Because I have the hope of seeing them again. Because my Grandparents AND my parents believed in and trusted Jesus.

I know. At first you thought I was just gonna share a little of my good ol’ Americana story. But then I had to go and spoil it all by saying something about Jesus. (side note: for some reason Frank and Nancy Sinatra popped into my mind)

But here’s the thing.

I would never have any nostalgic stories to share if it wasn’t for Jesus. And neither would you for that matter. Because He created us. For crying out loud, without a Manufacturer, there are NO manufactured goods. Without a Designer, there’s no design. Without a Creator, there’s no creation. You get the idea. Right?

The image of sitting on the porch with my Grandmother came into my head after I read about a Christian brother whose wife died a couple of days ago. And this has recently happened with a couple of my other friends, too. Fortunately, each of them has the hope of seeing their wives again. And that hope is because of their faith in Jesus.

If you’re reading this without that kind of hope, I hope that changes for you very soon.

Because these days the end of this world is closer than you’ve ever known.

You don’t know, for certain, you’ll even make it to lunch. And without the hope of life after death, that uncertainty will only lead to torment. And even though most people in the world ignore the solution to that problem, it’s so easy to avoid. But the solution requires humility. The kind of humility that selfish people don’t wanna think about.

Humility that says there IS a God of creation, you’re NOT Him, and He IS the source of faith, hope, and love.

Most people who read what I write or listen to what I say already know this. But if you just happened to land on my website, or someone else sent you this message, maybe you need to hear that your problems DO have a solution. And if it makes sense and you want the problems solved, don’t put it off. Remember…

“Enjoy this peaceful, wonderful day, and don’t take it for granted. Because, one of these days, you might be my age and most of, or all of, the people you love will be gone for good.”

There’s no difference when going first to last.
Lord we need you like generations passed.
Give us strength for this life.
And help us always focus our gaze,
With our eyes on the Prize, because these…
Are the Bible days.

(from the song of the same name)

Start something new. Not tomorrow. That won't do.

Tomorrow is not the time to start something new. Because tomorrow is a concept. Because humans need that concept to help us understand the flowing of time. And even though it helps to include tomorrow in your understanding of time, it never actually gets here.

Then, on the other hand, tomorrow is already here. On the other side of the world at the international date line area. But those people who live on the other side of it don’t live in the future. To them, it’s today. It’s right now.

So, if they start something new right now, they start today.

It’s all so discombobulated. Except when you realize you absolutely DO have a future.

You can’t keep it from happening any more than you can keep the sun from shining.

And that’s why I talk about the power of love so much. Not the wimpy, limp-wristed, “tolerance and diversity” nonsense that attempts to pass itself off as love these days. Nope. I mean the love so powerful it makes the moon revolve around the Earth and the sun to shine with light and warmth.

And that all happens in a universe that’s logical, yet magical. Reasonable, yet unbelievably huge.

For that kind of expansive evidence to exist, there MUST be a Designer even more expansive. I’d be a fool to say otherwise.

Since the evidence points to a Designer, a Creator, it’s a good idea to see if there’s more we can know about that person. Turns out, there’s a LOT more. Yeah, He wrote a bestselling book. No, that’s wrong. He wrote THE bestselling book of all time. The Bible. Maybe you’ve heard of it?

And that book says God started something new several thousand years ago.

The “heavens and the Earth.” Maybe you’ve heard of ’em? And after He created a perfect living environment He created a couple of perfect people. And He showed ’em their paradise. And He didn’t do all that for funsies. It wasn’t just something to pass the time. It was an awesome act of love.

And because you can see love throughout the Bible, you can understand how and why you can love. At least if you’re willing to understand. Most people aren’t. But I’m willing. And that’s why I’m sharing this song…

Because I Can Love

What made You think
That I was worth the risk You took?
What made You take the time
To write Your Holy Book?
I don’t believe I’d give myself a second look,
But You did because You love.

You made a world
That was as perfect as could be,
But then I broke it
When You gave it all to me…
By going through the gate You made to set me free.
This You did because You love…me.

Because You love me so…in spite of all You know…
Because You did the most that You could ever do…
Because I clearly see…evidence of You in me…
Because I can love…I do love…You!

You put a life
And a will inside my soul.
You knew true love
Would be to give me full control.
But knowing You is all that ever makes me whole.
I trust You because You love…me.

I can live because You live!
I can love because You love!

To everything there is a season - even the tough stuff

To everything there is a season. And apparently there was even a time for a songwriter to get inspiration for a song from the Bible. And a time for that song to be played on the radio.

But the songwriter turned the words and the message into lyrics.

And it didn’t work, for the rhythm and melody, to just say “To everything there is season.” So, a hook was added. With the same word “Turn” repeated three times. And since the hook played such a significant role in the song it only made sense to make that the title of the song.

Turn Turn Turn

The song was written by Pete Seeger, a folk singer, who first recorded it in 1959. But that recording wasn’t a hit. Well, maybe Pete’s fans and family loved it. But it didn’t become a bona fide hit until 1965. And that’s when Pete left it to the birds.

No wait. Make that The Byrds. And it was December 4, 1965 when the song went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Hey, what a coincidence! This is December 4th, too. (wry grin from me as the crowds roll their eyes)

According to the research I did, the song topped the chart for three weeks. And that’s pretty cool since it’s the number for God…just in case you’re interested in Biblical numerology.

Now, here’s what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna share the lyrics…well, actually the inspiration words for the song. And I’d like you to pay close attention. Because, remember, these words were written by King Solomon and inspired by God. And some of it isn’t about peace, love, and joy.

To everything there is a season

And there’s a time for every purpose under heaven.
A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;
A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;
A time to mourn,
And a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones,
And a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace,
And a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to gain,
And a time to lose;
A time to keep,
And a time to throw away;
A time to tear,
And a time to sew;
A time to keep silence,
And a time to speak;
A time to love,
And a time to hate;
A time of war,
And a time of peace.

Stay tuned,

Hate speech is in the ears of the listener

Hate speech is in the ears of the listener

I just read an article on my Apple News app talking about the shooter connected to the Pittsburgh synagogue. And the article called it a hate crime committed by a man who shared hate speech on social media channels. First off, I have to say how stupid the term “hate crime” sounds. It’s just redundant. All crime flows from selfishness, which is a form of hate. So to call one crime a hate crime as if there’s any other kind of crime is…like I said…stupid. Anyway, back to that hate speech thing.

Hate speech is in the ears of the listener

Hate speech is a term used by weaklings.

If you hate me (and you might just because I’m a Christian) and you wanna call me names or say bad things about me, so be it. But I won’t give you credit for a special language or label your selfishness as hate speech. I’ll just consider you worthy of both my love AND hate.

Uh-oh…did he say he’d hate you?

Yes.

But notice I said love AND hate. “That’s not even possible,” you say. Nay, nay grasshopper. In fact, as a Christian, I should be doing my best to emulate God, right? And what if God hates and loves at the same time? Should I try to do that, too? Correct answer is YES! And would God ask me to do something He knows I’m incapable of doing. Correct answer is NO!

“Golly gee, Tony. Where are you getting all this crazy talk from?” Correct answer is The Bible! Yeah, this whole crazy idea I’m sharing about how God hates and He expects us to as well…it’s in The Bible.

Allow me to share God’s own “hate speech” with you right here…

“These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.”

Look more closely at what and who God hates. If any of the seven things describe you, He hates your face, your mouth, your hands, your heart, your feet, and basically your whole self. Whoa! That covers a lot of hate, doesn’t it?

But God is the God of love, isn’t He? Sure. You bet. But He hates evil. And He tells us to hate it too. In fact, at least one Bible translation says to “abhor evil“. And that means to hate with all your might. Hey, that sounds like more hate speech. But it’s actually true love. Because true love can’t love evil. True love must abhor evil. If you truly love your fellow man, you tell him when he’s evil. And you don’t tolerate it. And you certainly don’t do evil so that good things might come from it.

So, keep God’s perspective in your heart. And the next time you see a so-called “reporter” or “journalist” put the word hate before the word speech, you’ll have the wisdom to see and understand their hypocrisy.

Be sure to jump on the one-of-a-kind The TRUTH today, and I’ll send you some free rhymes and reasons right away. Music, a book, and lots of good faith, hope, and love stuff.

Broken stuff is not God's way of planning your day.

Broken stuff is not God’s way of planning your day.

When you put your faith and trust in the one true, living, loving Creator of Heaven and Earth, He’s willing to amplify your talents and use you in some awesome ways. And when you read Paul’s writings, in the New Testament, you discover how important it is to know this. You also see how God is not responsible for broken stuff in your life. In fact, He’s the one who can (and will) help you through and over that stuff. Paul said it like this: “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…”

This weekend the accelerator cable on my pickup broke. Usually when something like that happens, the first question out of my mouth goes something like this: “What in the world?!” Of course, once I figure out what’s going on, I typically follow that up with something like: “Oh, for cryin’ out loud!” That’s on a “good day”, naturally. And I believe that first response is the best one…”What in the world?!” I don’t believe it’s a good idea to blame God.

Broken stuff happens because of this broken world.

When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden, their actions literally broke the world and our spiritual connection to God. After they did that, everything changed. Everything began to deteriorate, and things have been going downhill ever since. You can actually trace everything bad in the world back to sin. But certainly not to God. Rust, mold, slime, germs, and ultimately death, all happen because we live in a broken world. And we broke it. Not God.

Sure, God has a plan…to ultimately bring justice back to the world He made…and make it new again. But I know beyond a shadow of a doubt He didn’t break my accelerator cable to teach me some sort of spiritual lesson. He wrote a book to teach me those lessons and help me fix broken stuff. It’s called the Bible. Have you read it?

I’m broken, but God didn’t do it.
In fact, only He can get me through it.
He heals me with love on the inside,
And I’ll live forever because Jesus died…

And rose again!

If I doubt you're a Christian, then the benefit of the doubt is the Word of God.

If you’ve ever read The Revelation (the last book in the Bible), you probably understand how it reveals and predicts. It’s prophetic. Some of it has happened. Some is happening now. And some is yet to come. But the point I’m making is this…The Revelation proves we’re still living in the “Bible Days.”

When you get a true sense that time is certainly running out for this age, I hope it will ignite the love of God in you. I hope you’ll want to pass this love on at every opportunity. Keep in mind…some people will even hate you for it, but pass it on. You don’t know who might benefit from knowing God loves them. And you may not find out, short of Heaven, whose life you changed.

Don’t wait for Christmas to “get in the spirit.” Let THE Spirit shine through you and walk confidently in the knowledge that God will be with you. Because…

These Are The Bible Days

I’m no prophet, but God can work through me.
Willing servants are all He wants to see.
We can learn from the past, the apostles,
and all of their ways,
But we live in the here and now, and these….are the Bible days.

Lord, our small hearts are full of love from You.
Help us know what You’d rather have us do.
Help the sheep hear Your call in this world that’s so full of strays.
As it was when Your Son arose; still these…are the Bible days.

When darkness falls…These are the Bible days.
Temptation calls…
When right is wrong…
The weak get strong…
Till every mountain sways, till every debtor pays,
Till every helpless, hopeless, sinner prays…
These…are the Bible days.

There’s no difference when going first to last.
Lord we need you like generations passed.
Give us strength for this life and help us always focus our gaze
With our eyes on the Prize because these…
are the Bible days.

Chorus

Tony Funderburk's writing for kids includes ebooks for kids like "Music Pajamas".

With ebooks for kids gaining popularity…
are we looking at the beginning of the end for traditional publishing?

I don’t think so. Not very soon anyway. Why? A little thing called electricity. If you use an eReader or tablet or mobile or laptop to read ebooks for kids or any other ebooks, you need electricity to read ’em. And if there was an extended outage (hurricane damage for instance), you’d be without your reading material. So, the good ol’ paperback or hardbound book would look pretty awesome right about then.

Still…as a writer and reader of ebooks for kids and other humans, I’m extremely fond (putting it mildly) of the digital medium. For instance, at any given moment during a typical day…no matter where I am…I’m carrying around at least 6 to 10 books. And I have them in the little side pocket of my Levi’s carpenter jeans…in my iPhone. And that’s in addition to being able to access the Bible (many versions complete with reference materials), a large collection of my lullaby songs and other children’s songs, my pictures and videos and audio memos, and so much more.

I actually enjoy reading ebooks on my iPhone. It’s not cumbersome. It’s there when I’m ready. I don’t have to remember an extra thing to carry around. And I don’t lose my place in the text. Oh yeah…and I can send myself (or others in social media circles or email) notes, clips, and more.

So…it’s worth it to me to have to remember to keep my iPhone charged in order to read the latest of my ebooks for kids or cool marketing pdf or my Bible. After all, I’d have to keep it charged even if I was just gonna use it to make phone calls.  🙂

Get my Tony’s Rhyme and Reason Daily Devotional. Because the flashes of light I share on my website come directly to your inbox. So you can spend your valuable time reading instead of searching. And, to show my sincere appreciation for your time and attention, I’ll send you download links to books and music, right away. Kids from 3 to 103 can enjoy these fun goodies.
