K9 Veterans Day shows what this author surely knows

As I scrolled through some information on the www this morning, I discovered that today (March 13, 2023) is K9 Veterans Day. And first, I gotta say I didn’t know there was such a day. Secondly, it makes perfect sense when you consider how valuable dogs are to military and police services all around the world.

So, this K9 Veterans Day reminded me of a friend of mine.

He’s a retired police officer, in Colorado, who’s more than a little familiar with K9 Veterans Day. Because he was the “alpha” of K9 teams for about 30 years. Hopefully I have that right. You’ll have to ask him. But, however long it was, he had a successful career working with police dogs.

Anyway…

Since his retirement from the police force, Gordon has transitioned into a successful author. In fact, he’s a bestselling author on Amazon with his different K9 series. As his bio, on Amazon says, his books are “fictionalized compilations of real-life scenarios that he has seen, heard of, or been involved in over his years with law enforcement and military service.”

I’ve had the pleasure to read some of his work. And it’s entertaining, engaging, and colorful. I’m not an affiliate for him. So, I don’t get any commissions or payback of any kind to tell you this. I just think you should check out his work if you enjoy crimefighting books.

Here’s an excerpt from one of the short stories on his website:

“Timmy watched as the alpha walked up to the stopped vehicle. The strobes of the police Explorer unit, flashing in the dark of night, did nothing to distract his attention. He was focused on the alpha, the leader of the pack, his master. Timmy had no true concept that he was in a police cruiser or even what a car was. He knew nothing of the fact that some considered him to be a very high-priced piece of city equipment. He didn’t know, nor was he capable of knowing, that his initial four months of K9 training had cost the City of Gunwood nearly forty thousand dollars in man hours, training aids, food, and veterinary bills. What he did comprehend, at least in the primal, animalistic way that all canines comprehend, was…”

Go to the link below to read the rest. You don’t have to buy anything. Just scroll down the page till you see a link to the short stories. And I believe you’ll enjoy his writing style so much that you’ll wanna take advantage of the sale he’s got going at:

To all the K9 service dogs
Who’ve served and who serve still,
I send congratulations for
The jobs that you fulfill.
And thanks go to your trainers, too.
While you are in harm’s way,
Be sure you’re all connected to
The Maker of your day.

Movies out now just don't know how

The movies out now are mostly total junk. And I know they don’t, as a rule, cater to guys, like me, who prefer to be entertained and encouraged. Because, apparently, most people out there in the wide world would rather watch movies full of profanity, darkness, and sex.

At least if the movies out now are any indication.

The reason I bring it up is because we’ve had a visitor, for the past three weeks, here in the Funderhaus. A sister/sister-in-law who had a chance to spend some extended time visiting her older sister and connecting for more than a weekend.

Naturally, in the evening we’ve spent time around the TV to be entertained like millions of other American households. Trouble is (as others would see it…not us) we don’t have “regular” TV service. And we haven’t had regular TV service for almost 10 years. Because we despise 99.99% of the horrible content you find there.

So, we made the choice to stream only what we want to watch. And skip all the foolishness, on the traditional and cable networks, produced to program the masses.

Yeah, I’m opinionated on the subject. So are you. To each his/her own.

But the point is, it means we don’t just turn on the TV, find a channel, and start watching. No, we have to look for something decent to watch. And that usually means an old black and white movie. Or sometimes old black and white TV show reruns.

Because when we look at movies out now, we see SO. MUCH. DARKNESS. Even the thumbnail pictures you see in the lists on Amazon Prime, or YouTube, or Apple, etc.

It’s all a far cry from my movie-going days way back when.

Like when I spent so much of my time on the road, as a professional musician. During the day, I went to the movies a lot. And, even though things were already heading in the direction they’ve ended up now, entertaining and encouraging movies weren’t all that rare.

And when I think back even further, I remember so many movies with happy endings. Movies that didn’t require a thousand dead nobodies. With storylines that didn’t take place only at night in the darkest, dingiest, most unimaginable places.

And the movies I remember (and prefer to remember) had happy endings. No, I don’t care if you believe that’s not like real life. Because here’s the thing.

Movies. Are. Not. Real. Life.

So, they can go in whatever direction a director directs them. Trouble is, directors appear to prefer to take you to the darkest parts of their minds. And they appear to want you to spend time in drug-infested ghettos. Or in a bathroom while someone uses it. Or in back alleys, basements, or bordellos.

Maybe it’s just me (it’s not). But my preference is always for the health-giving and soul-saving light, found in the Way, the Truth, and the Life. And that means, these days I have to go on a quest every time I wanna find decent cinematic entertainment and get…

Lost In The Movies

There are people sitting silent on the lawn.
They’re my friends, but I know they’ll soon be gone.
No, it’s not a tragedy. It holds so much in store for me,
And so that gives me cause to face the dawn.
There are swallows flying freely in the skies.
It’s a pleasant sight for anybody’s eyes.
Though it’s like a photograph, keep in mind it’s half and half.
It’s easy. You don’t even have to try.
In the movies…I’m always lost in the movies.
My eyes have that far away glaze.
In the movies…it’s always nice in the movies.
They make you believe in better days.
In the movies…you’ll find me in the movies.
There are faces tough and tender in the dark.
I can see the players reach the final mark.
Listening for the closing word, I remember what I’ve heard,
And then I leave as happy as a lark.

7 layer architecture is my very own conjecture

Several years ago I conjured up a 7 layer architecture to describe the human heart. But, keep in mind, it’s a product of my own wishful thinking. Because the human heart ain’t nothin’ like this.

So, the 7 layer architecture goes like this:

“The first layer is a deep, dark indigo where the heart is conceived. The second layer is a rich, regal purple where the heart is created. The third layer is a magnetic, cobalt blue where the shape of the heart is formed. The fourth layer is a fertile, emerald green where love can grow. The fifth layer is a warm, glowing orange where emotions are kindled. The sixth layer is a lilting yellow where faith and hope mingle. And the seventh layer is a luscious, rose red where the embers of life never die out.”

As you can see, the 7 layers are made up of colors. And I decided to share how it was built.

~ Now…imagine all those layers of the heart are poured out quickly and form a beautiful work of art. And imagine everyone who walked by wanting to know who the artist was.

“Oh my,” says one passer-by. “I’ve never seen such spectacular colors. It must’ve taken the artist years to create such a masterpiece.”

But it just so happens, the artist is right behind the canvas in the next aisle. And he comes around to face the observer and says…

“Not at all…I created this piece before lunch one day.”

“Impossible,” replies the observer. “No one could create such a wonderful work of art in only a few hours.”

“And yet…I tell you I did.” The artist begins to appear frustrated. “If you won’t believe me in this small matter, what would you ever believe?” ~

Here’s why I wrote the story to go with the 7 layers description.

Because the heart represents our beautiful layered world. The artist is actually the Creator of the universe and all the matter in it. He did that in 6 days.

And, in His wise judgment, He flooded the world one time about 4,000 years ago. And during and after that flood, many beautiful layers of sediment were deposited in many places. It all happened in days. Not millions of years. And now, 4,000 years later, you can still see those amazingly parallel strata in places like the Grand Canyon.

It’s pure, unadulterated awesomeness to observe the complex design in the world and universe. And that’s the best way to avoid a lifetime of uncertainty found in the theory of random chance.

Just the thought of it lights up all the layers of the heart.

Meteorological Spring just isn't my thing

Well, depending on who you source, the meteorological spring for 2023 has begun. Because, from what I discovered, it starts right around the first of March, here in the Northern Hemisphere. And that’s because temperatures are, well, spring like.

But meteorological spring isn’t the spring I remember.

Because I remember learning about the vernal equinox. And that sounded like a much cooler event than just a dumb ol’ temperature gauge. So, this season of renewal, for me, always began around the 21st of March.

And I remember a day at that time of year, way back in the third quarter of the twentieth century. I lived in a small town in Kansas. And I had a serious habit of driving around the countryside to write. Mostly poems. But sometimes I’d journal a little. Other times I’d write stories.

The particular day I have in mind was a poem day. And here’s the poem about that brisk March day.

My Lover Today

Wind blowing through snowflake hills,
Ice castle all crumbling down.
Winter, in silence, is gone.
I watched it go with a frown.
Then, with a sigh, I remember saying good-bye
To Autumn the very same way.

Spring opens its eyes and mine.
There is a new warmth in the air.
Skies once clouded with flurries of snow
Now seem to be blue and fair,
And, with a sigh, Winter quickly passes me by,
And Spring is my lover today.

The seasons are lovely today…
Make my heart sing, make my thoughts cling
To wondering
If things will ever
Change me into Summer.
Let me be your flowers.
We can be a painting, if we don’t get sad and…

Then, with a sigh, I remember drying my eyes,
Watching all of the seasons pass me by.

Lilypad lake and a frog and a snake

It’s the story of a lilypad, lake, a frog, and a snake. And it shows how what you think about yourself isn’t necessarily what anyone (or everyone) else thinks about you.

This lilypad lake story starts out like this:

So, once there was a lilypad that no frog ever used.
You wouldn’t think a lilypad could get its feelings bruised.
But sure enough this lilypad cried to itself each night,
And each day did its very best to stay out of plain sight.

It’s the latest children’s book from your favorite number 1 Rhyme and Reason guy. No, not him! I’m talkin’ about me. You’re such a kidder.

Anyway…

The book is called “The Lonely Lilypad.”

And you should get the paperback version over at that tiny, online book store. Let’s see. What’s that name again? Hmm. I just can’t remember. Doesn’t matter. You can simply click THIS LINK and get right to the book.

OR…

If you’re one of the first three, you can Venmo me a tip of $20 (and your address) and I’ll send you a signed copy. Directly from me to you. My Venmo handle is @TonyWrites. And I only have 3 of the signed ones available right now. So, don’t delay. Get one for your little one today.

Unless, of course, they don’t like bedtime stories and coloring and drawing books. Especially the kind where you can scan a link, with your phone, and get the audio of me reading the book. Yeah, I suppose there might be some goofy kids who could be like that.

And this…

Bedtime stories aren’t for me.
I’m just too old to sleep.
I’ve got better things to do.
I just don’t need bopeep.
There are planets I’ll go find
After you leave the room.
And I must protect the house
From aliens of doom.
Bedtime stories are for kids
Who only want to sleep…
Silly kids whose eyes will close
Because they counted sheep.
But I’ll be in my rocket ship
And back home before dawn.
So, read to all those other kids.
I need to leave and…”yawn”.

Turn on the lights and enjoy the delights

If you’re a business owner, you understand how great it is to get your dream started. And you know what it feels like to work hard, build your dream, and turn on the lights for the first time. You don’t have to be a business owner to know what I’m talking about. There are other experiences like that.

There’s the thrill you feel the first time you turn on the lights to a new home.

Or turn on the lights in your new car. Or probably all kinds of other experiences I haven’t included. And it’s a thrill because that light that pours in symbolizes the beginning. The start of something new. The anticipation of all the exhilarating possibilities ahead.

Imagine how much more thrilling it must’ve been when the very first light got turned on. Because that light was the absolute first light ever. Well, the first created light anyway.

Here’s a description of how that day went. “Then God said, Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.”

I can’t imagine how spectacular that must have been. But I CAN imagine how to describe it to kids. In fact, I DID imagine AND describe it to kids. In my book, The Very First 6 Days. Here’s a sample from the book…

The Very First Day

Before there were created things, and darkness filled the air…
No world or human beings were existing anywhere.
Then God created earth and sea and all the heavens too.
There was no sun, no moon, no stars, and only God shone through.

He looked down at the waters and the dark face of the deep.
The earth was still and quiet just as we are when we sleep.
He said, “Let there be light” the way a perfect, true God could,
And then He saw the brand new light and knew that it was good.

Then God divided light and dark, and darkness He called Night.
The light would be called Day, and it was pleasing in His sight.
That evening and that morning wouldn’t be the total sum…
No, that was just the very first day…five were yet to come.

Get The Very First 6 Days for someone you care about, today.

If you’re a KDP subscriber, you can even get it for free. But the paperback is the better option. You’ll see why. Click or tap HERE to get the book right now. Or copy and paste the link I’ve included, below.

Archangel wings are very rare things

Imagine seeing an angel with six wings. And, as you look closely, you see the angel uses two of them to cover his face, two of them to cover his feet, and two of them to fly. Pretty cool. And that’s a regular angel. What about archangel wings? Those must be even way cooler. Because there are only three archangels.

So, archangel wings must be rare.

Yeah, in spite of what silly movies, like “Michael” (starring John Travolta as the angel, Michael), archangel wings would, by definition, be rare. And their “feathers” don’t fall off and float around everywhere. And archangels aren’t cigarette-smoking slobs who enjoy hanging out at bars.

Well, two out of three archangels wouldn’t be regular patrons of bars anyway.

One, who decided he’s just way too awesome to be ignored, probably endorses all the very worst your local dive might offer. Sure, he got quite a write-up in the Bible. But you follow his resumé on through, and you see his work history is a catastrophic mess. So much so that I won’t even mention his name here.

But I will mention the other two. Michael. And Gabriel.

Because they are the quintessential “good guys.” And, if you’re one of those strange few who has decided to believe in the one true, living, loving God of all creation, you’re aware of their essential parts in history. If you’re not one of those who has made that decision, then I recommend you do. At your earliest opportunity. Like yesterday. Oh wait. Time travel is impossible. So, the next best time is NOW!

Because you never know when you might be caught…

Unaware

Tinkling trinkets twinkled through the tiny town.
Lots of lemon drops were lofted by a clown.
And the muffins made with mandarin were sweet…
As the fireworks and fireflies lit up the street.

With one glance a glad glissando glided by…
And a perfect pizzicato pierced the sky…
You might ask where was this wonderment beheld…
I won’t tell you, and I cannot be compelled.

‘Less, of course, you’d share the shelter of your shade
With the people passing by in the parade.
Then I’d treat you to the treasures tendered there
As you aided an archangel unaware.

Worm Moon 2023 and a moony song from me

Time marches on. And Worm Moon 2023 is a deLIGHTful example of it. Yeah, you read that right.

Worm Moon 2023 is a real thing.

And it’s gonna happen starting tomorrow, as I write this. It’s the last full moon of the winter season. Or the first full moon of the spring season. Depends on whether you look at the timing from a meteorological or astronomical perspective. And evidently it got its name because it occurs at the time of year when the earthworms start to make their way up to and through the topsoil.

Worms and other bugs really start to get a lot more active this time of year. Here in the deep South (where we currently live) I’ve already seen a significant increase in the number of bug splatters on the windshield. And I gotta say, that makes me homesick for my Rocky Mountains.

But anyway…

According to timetables I’ve seen, you could start to see Worm Moon 2023 this evening, March 5. But it will be at its brightest on Tuesday evening. Sometime around 7 p.m.

Elgielene and I walked along the beach, with her sister and brother-in-law, last week. And I noticed how the waves churned in and out very nicely. And, as a result, the ocean was a clear, cool aquamarine color. With plenty of active life in and out of the water.

Turns out, the moon has a lot to do with that. I won’t go into it right now, and I’ve shared some info about it before. But the point is, the Earth, moon, and sun were all designed to support each other. And, more importantly, to support life.

And the Designer’s love inspires me to write about the gift of life. That includes songs like…

Catch The Moon

See the ball of light
In the deep blue night.
Shines like a big white whole note
On a musical flight
Floating through space and through time
Like a hot air balloon.

Feel the cool night air
Dancing through your hair.
Laugh right out loud and then watch
Stars light up everywhere.
Look up with your arms open wide,
And you will Catch The Moon.

Catch The Moon…Catch The Moon…Catch The Moon

Music fills the skies
As you harmonize.
Lyrics line up and fall down
And they land in your eyes.
Look up with your arms open wide,
And you will Catch The Moon.

Hate me, berate me, and even debate me

Even people who say they’re all about love and acceptance hate me. They’d never admit it. But they do.

A few years ago I shared an article and a song about the sanctity of life. And I mentioned that many people SAY they celebrate tolerance and diversity. But they don’t include Christians in their diversity tolerance circle. Sadly, this same behavior is still going on with no end in sight.

Hey, don’t hate me because I’m dutiful.

Below is what I shared and how one of those tolerance and diversity people responded…

~ I just recently started my new iTunes podcast. And after it was live for only a couple of days I received an email telling me that what we Christians do (or I should say what he thinks we do) is a “relic of superstition and reptilian brain thinking and must go.” That’s his way of celebrating diversity and showing extreme tolerance for beliefs different from his own. Right? Here’s what else he shared…

“People without a rich and deep inner life are the ones who try so desperately to change things outside themselves. This archetype is portrayed by Agent Smith in The Matrix. If you watch The Matrix Reloaded you will notice that Agent Smith has duplicated himself over and over again until there are thousands of him. That’s what the distorted version of Christianity seeks to do as well, to try to make everyone just like them. The effects of this can be easily discerned if one is willing to open one’s mind and see that what is happening in the world today is actually a result of religious abuse and control. Religion has become a self policing system of controls and dominance, maintained by it’s members, and imposed on anyone who is not “for them.”

Any religion that teaches it’s ok to kill in the name of God is absolutely and totally useless. Divide and conquer is a relic of superstition and reptilian brain thinking and must go. God is much much bigger than all that. It’s time for you to grow up Spiritually, to come from love instead of fear, and to allow others to choose for themselves. God did not die and leave you in charge.”

That’s no lie, guy.

No, God did not die and leave me in charge. But Jesus DID die, rose again, and gave a man named (renamed) Paul a new message to share with everyone. And that’s a message of eternal salvation for anybody who asks for it. God leaves Christians, His “body” on Earth, in charge of sharing that message.

Now, seriously…do you really want to spend your valuable time being mad at me for sharing a message of eternal life?

Yeesh…some people.

You express your pro life views and how you value the sanctity of life. And you give away free tunes. You even post a tribute video to a special little girl who lost her battle with cancer at the age of two. And yet you get an email expressing utter disdain toward your “religion.” That happened to me. It happens to Christians all the time.

And as for that “allow others to choose for themselves” comment, read my articles. You’ll discover that I’ve mentioned “choice” over and over and over. Of course, I “allow” you to choose for yourself. I don’t have (and don’t want) the power to force you to choose. But I DO talk about how there are consequences for your decision.

And people hate me for that.

Oh well. It goes with the job description.

Give me words, give me courage.
Give me time and a powerful voice.
And when many still may hate me,
Give me Your love and I’ll always rejoice.

(from the song “Give Me The Whole Jesus”)

Dish it out and allow turnabout

It’s in the news. On the radio and TV. And it’s in the books and magazines. People (and I use that term loosely) increasingly hate God. And they increasingly hate anyone who loves God. So, they paint on their hate-filled colors. And they hang out their silly pronouns. And they scoop what’s left of their brain and dish it out as though they actually believe their hate will win the day.

But what they forget is: Don’t Dish It Out If You Can’t Take It.

Yeah, I see a growing hatred of the God I love and I know who loves me. It’s ironic that the people who typically shout the loudest about things like “hate crimes” and “tolerance” and “celebrate diversity” are almost always the ones who are least tolerant of those who love God.

Christians, who say Jesus is the only Way to eternal life in paradise, with God, are hated. Simply for what they say. But here’s the thing. It comes from the Bible, the best-selling book of all time. So, if you’re gonna be true to your “cause,” don’t just pay lip service to it. Love, tolerate, and celebrate the diversity that is Christianity.

Your free speech right does NOT give you the right to say whatever you feel like, about Christians, and expect no retaliation. It literally goes back to what you learned (or should have learned) when you were still an actual kid. Don’t dish it out, if you can’t take it.

Your opinions and rants aren’t more important just because you spray your hair with rainbow colors. Or stick a gross pin through your nose. Or tattoo your body with tranny messages. Yeah, I sound like a person with a hate-filled message. TO. YOU. So, the opposite is just as TRUE. So, once again…

Don’t dish it out, if you can’t take it.

Go ahead. Flaunt your hatred for the true, living, loving God of the Bible. And do it boldly. Complete with your total disregard for human biology. Turn your back on the beautiful, wonderful design of a marriage between a woman and man. And don’t be afraid to ignore the mountain of evidence for creation to explain our origin.

But, also, don’t be surprised when we deflect your hate right back to you. Or when we use our creative skills to expose you. Just because you make it seem like there’s nothing sacred anymore doesn’t mean there’s…

Nothin’s Sacred Anymore

Take the truth and lock it up, and throw away the key.
Winds of change are blowing foul; a dance with destiny.
Blur the face of love and sex and say it’s all OK.
Tell the child it’s just a choice and melt her soul away.

Nothin’s sacred anymore…
Can’t we learn from mistakes when they cut to the core?
Nothin’s sacred anymore…
And should we be surprised since we’ve opened that dark, wide door?
Nothin’s sacred anymore

Cast your vote for social growth and then say yes to law.
Keep the peace, divide the wealth; the vision Adolph saw.
Hedge the bets and ride the fence; the middle road’s secure.
Then one day you’re head to head with all you must endure.

Nothin’s sacred anymore…
Can’t we learn from mistakes when they cut to the core?
Nothin’s sacred anymore…
And should we be surprised since we’ve opened that dark, wide door?
Nothin’s sacred anymore

More, more space and time.
More would be sublime.
Someone else can pay
Long as I get mine today.

Ain’t nothin’ sacred anymore.

Notes and beats and life's small treats

Elgielene will back me up on this (and she’ll probably add how annoying it can be). But there are almost always notes and beats going on in my brain. And the annoying part (for others who can’t hear them) is how they manifest through my finger tips.

Yeah, I tap out the notes and beats with my fingers.

Virtually ALL the time. Well, during my awake hours anyway.

In fact, even as I type out my articles, or other writing for clients, the keyboard tapping noises often trigger the notes and beats. I think it’s cool, how the rhythm of typing can actually feel quantized sometimes. At least when I’m in a solid typing groove. And, to be clear, that’s not always. Thankfully. But it DOES happen.

I have no way of proving it, but I think my mom must have listened to a lot of music when I was still in the womb. Because, for as far back as I can remember, I’ve had a knack for, and connection to, beats and music.

And I read an article about babies in the womb that supports me on this. It said…

“While a pregnant woman listens to music, the unborn baby will be able to hear the vibrations and respond to the same. This may help improve a baby’s reflexes and play a role in overall movement. It is possible that while you listen to music during pregnancy, the baby may not understand it at this stage. However, they try to concentrate on sounds, and doing so, helps them improve their mental stimulation.”

And I’ve heard stories of moms who said they could tap on their bellies and then feel their babies respond. Makes total sense that the Creator of music and rhythm (and babies) would make sure there’d be a healthy benefit to it all.

Many of the songs I write have notes next to the lyrics.

And those notes (words, not music) tell me much more than you’d get just from reading them. Because I “see” the end resuIt I want the music to be, when I see my notes. I won’t go into how that happens. But I’m confident it has a lot to do with the fact that I’m not the product of a randomized series of events. I’m a designed person.

And I was a designed person from the very instant I was conceived. That’s why I know…

Outside the lines the grass is greener.  (B♭ F E♭ F B♭)
But that will not change my demeanor.
Because my life runs like a river.
I’ll take what all my days deliver.

(from my song: “I Can Do”)

I hope the notes and beats in your life, today, pound out a positive rhythm and light up your smile.

Stay tuned,

Fly up to the sky in the blink of an eye

You can learn to fly. And it won’t cost you lots of money for oodles of hours of training. AND you’ll be able to fly up to the sky much faster than technology can take your text across the globe. What do you say? Interested?

All you gotta do, to be able to fly up to the sky like that, is learn from your mistakes.

Uh-oh. The proverbial fly in the ointment. Right? Because humans seem to be very good at making mistakes. But it’s not quite so easy to learn from them. In fact, you might be one of those who’s good at repeating the same mistakes over and over.

Sound familiar? Me too.

We don’t seem to learn from history. And so we “doom” ourselves to repeat it. A few years ago, I shared three ways humans don’t learn from their mistakes. And they’re even truer now.

1. Truth: Those who want to control others cast shadows on the truth. Truth is their mortal enemy. So they have to pound out lies with great resolve until the truth becomes nothing more than a cloudy concept. Truth becomes “whatever you make of it”. Or whatever is “right in their own minds”. Nazis believed if you told a “lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually become to believe it”. Do you see that happening all around you today?

2. Morality: This is another area under constant attack by those who want to justify their behavior. When you reduce right and wrong to whatever is right in your own mind, you produce a culture where anything goes. Then everything goes…out the window. Who knows where that might lead? You might even find adults killing babies. Well, at least that couldn’t happen here in America. Right?

3. Property: Once people realize they can vote the money away from the wealthy and into their own pockets, the genie is out of the bottle. And it’s difficult to impossible to get him back in. Politicians run for office (and win) using promises based on redistribution of wealth. It’s not merely wrong. It’s evil, and it destroys lives. But who cares, right? It’s just the way things are. The status quo. I’m gonna get mine as long as the gettin’s good.

Yeah, none of that has gotten better.

But just because that’s the way it is for the rest of the world doesn’t mean you can’t learn to fly above it. Because the rest of the world can only keep you from the truth if you let it.

But like Carol King sang in her song, “You’ve Got a Friend…”

“They’ll hurt you and desert you.
They’ll take your soul if you let them.
Ah, but don’t you let them.”

Let today be the day you learn what it takes to fly up to the sky in the blink of an eye. Talk to and trust your Maker. And, if everybody starts to make fun of you, just remember these lyrics from another favorite songwriter:

Oh give me love…give me justice…
Give me Grace and the strength to endure.
When the world comes against me,
Give me Your Spirit steadfast and sure.

Engraved art is the most special part

I’ve written thousands and thousands of rhymes, stories, books, and songs. But there’s only one of my many creative works that’s truly gonna last. And that’s the engraved art in my heart. And even though it’s there because I chose to have it there, I’m not the artist.

Engraved art is more IN than ON.

And that’s what makes it such a great analogy for long-lasting (even eternal) love. And that’s why I referred to it in a song I wrote for my first collection of Christian-themed songs, “Do Right.” The song is about the eternal character, love, and nature of Jesus. And how He is the only hope-filled answer to life’s problems.

Watch/listen for the The Power of God’s Love Podcast version of this post and you can hear the song. But for anyone who prefers to read and skip the music, here are the lyrics to the engraved art song:

Everlasting Everywhere

I want the Everlasting Work Of Art;
Not just on canvas, but engraved in the heart
I need the Everlasting Scale Of Worth.
That’s the only Way to perfect peace on earth

Everlasting and everywhere…
He’s Everlasting and everywhere

I look for Everlasting holy clues
To steel myself through all this negative news
I dream the Everlasting wide-eyed stuff,
But I’m still aware that dreaming’s never enough

Chorus

You seek the answers to the mysteries of life
But how much truth can you handle
And as for me, well, there is only One Fire
That lights the flame on my candle

Chorus

I look to the Everlasting Guiding Star
To make my path straight as I travel so far
I sing the Everlasting song of man;
Teach us to understand our place in the plan

Chorus…inst…chorus…bridge…chorus…

modulate up and repeat

2 verses and choruses to end

Nothin from nothin leaves what a wise man believes

Here’s a little music tidbit I didn’t know. The first musical performance on Saturday Night Live was Billy Preston singin’ his hit song, Nothin From Nothin. And that didn’t just pop up, randomly in my poetmagination brain. Because I wanted to share some of the lyrics from that song. And I remembered it came out in the 70’s. But I looked it up to be sure when.

Nothin From Nothin was a chart-topper in 1974.

And the chorus went like this:

Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’
You gotta have somethin’ if you wanna be with me
Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’
You gotta have somethin’ if you wanna be with me.

It’s a fun song. If you’ve never heard it, you’re either misled hermit or you’re just too young to have enjoyed the good stuff.

But the reason I brought up that song and those lyrics is because they show how even recording artists inherently know you can’t get somethin’ from nothin’. And you know how recording artists aren’t the sparkliest crayons in the box.

So, who cares if you can or can’t get somethin’ from nothin’? Well, it might surprise you (if you’re the aforementioned hermit or too-young person) most people care. On some level or another. In fact, they build their lives around one perspective or the other. Most people either believe everything came from something or it came from nothing. There’s almost no one (and certainly no one I know) who falls in between.

And that means you believe that in the beginning, God created. Or you believe that in the beginning dirt created itself. You’re free to believe either way. But it seems so obvious you can only get nothin from nothin. Billy Preston thought so.

And here’s the thing.

Dirt will always keep you down and dirty. And God will lift you up higher than the universe. He’ll show you eternal love and give you eternal life. But not if you don’t want that.

Not sure why anyone wouldn’t want that. But most people prefer to thumb their nose at God. And I firmly believe they’ll regret that decision. Forever. So, here’s what I always recommend to those people.

Give up your god complex. Let God have that title. Show Him the respect He deserves for creating all living matter. And take Him up on His offer of eternal life in paradise with Him. It’s up to you. But choose carefully. And you can enjoy…

The Living End

How can I explain the numbers in the rain?
I’d like to help illuminate the pathways to your mind.
But I am just a man; I’ll do the best I can
I’ll show you where to look, and I’ll tell you this:
It isn’t behind…

It’s a firecracker and a windchime
It’s a loudspeaker and a street mime
And It’s the friction of invisible wind…It’s the living end

I should write a book; give back what I took
It’s the kind of thing that multiplies
When you give it away
The knowledge and the lack;
The rails that make the track
Tend to open doors and open hearts
To what they can say…

It’s a sand pebble and the fired glass
It’s a skyscraper and a mountain pass
And It’s the friction of invisible wind…It’s the living end

Oh, and I’m sure I can’t make you believe
If it’s not within your will
Oh, and it’s been around since Adam and Eve
And it never stood still

How can I extol the matters of the soul?
I was never one to shake my fist and preach in the square.
No, I just always knew that faith would lead me through,
And there has to be a larger life that lasts forever out there

(repeat 1st chorus)

Judge no book by its cover. Of that saying I'm no lover

I know you’ve heard this. Because, if you haven’t, where have you been hiding? People say you should judge no book by its cover. And that’s especially when they don’t want you to judge someone for the way they look. Or their “lifestyle choice.”

But “judge no book” isn’t about “a look” or “lifestyle choice.”

Well, sometimes it is. But, for the sake of illustrating a point, in this case that’s not what it’s about.

I personally don’t care what shade your skin is. You and I are members of the one, single human race. That whole idea of different “races” because of different skin colors was/is a product of hate-filled minds. Because anyone who understands the value of love, described in a letter from about 2000 years ago, doesn’t judge someone according to skin color.

And that’s not “racist.” It’s rebellious.

Your Creator says there are basically two commands He expects you to obey. Love Him. And love your neighbor as yourself. Those commands don’t include colors. And they are directed at one gender or the other. They’re not only required of old people. Or young. And they certainly aren’t expected of some so-called “chosen” people.

Nope. Those commands are for every human being. And if you can’t obey, then you can’t judge. Because you don’t know:

The One True Way To Peace

Judge me; I need to be judged
Correct me;  whenever I’m wrong
Save me from thinking my thoughts
I’ve lived in them way too long

Show me what I need to see
Tell me what I have to hear
Give me a voice of wisdom
Thank You for taking my fear

And I have to trust that my God is just
And I feel my boldness increase
I’m a dissident, and I’m an instrument
For the one true Way to peace

Search me for the deeper things
Fill me from Your living well
Free me from the ways of man
Take me off the path to Hell

Listen to my fervent prayer
Bless me so that I can bless
Change me with Your mighty Word
Spare me with Your tenderness

Chorus

Make me to always understand
I’m only mighty in Your mighty Hand

inst…Chorus to end

Exploding stars and hope-filled memoirs

According to one reliable source, a star explodes about every 26 years. No, I’m not talking about Alec Baldwin. These are actual stars. You know, those blinking lights up in the sky. So, evidently, exploding stars are not a rare phenomenon.

And exploding stars produce a lot of gas and dust.

And, also according to my trustworthy source, that gas and dust expands “outward thousands of miles per second.” Astronomers, with radio telescopes, have seen those remnants. And my source said, “these remnants in our galaxy should be visible for a million years. However, only about 7,000 years’ worth of supernova debris are seen.”

It’s been a while since my last math class. But, if I remember correctly, 7,000 years is way less than a million.

So, if observers are to believe what they actually see with their own, actual eyes, what should 7,000 years’ worth of debris from exploding stars tell them?

Come on, man. Don’t make me say it. What should that information tell them?

Seriously? You’re gonna make me say it? Ok, fine.

Since there’s only about 7,000 years’ worth of supernova debris, our cute, little Milky Way is young. And it’s part of a correspondingly young universe.

“Hold on there, Tony! Let’s not jump to any of that young universe stuff. That’s just crazy talk!”

Yeah, crazy like a fox. (I have no idea how that relates to this discussion, but anyway…)

No, it’s not crazy talk.

Especially when observers have kept their “eyes” on the skies for a long, long time. Because, those so-called “scientists” who desperately want the universe (and Earth) to be old, constantly look for supportive evidence. And, unfortunately for them, exploding stars don’t help their cause, er, studies.

But who cares? Right? Why does it matter if the universe is 7,000 years old? Or millions? Or even billions? Well, it doesn’t matter if you’re convinced your time here on planet Earth is all you’re ever gonna have. But what if that assumption is flawed? What if the intangible YOU goes on after you die? What then?

There are conflicting explanations for what happens to you after you die (not “pass”). But, in my somewhat educated opinion, only ONE of those explanations provides hope. And I mean confident-building hope. Cover your eyes if you don’t wanna see this next part. Because I’m gonna do a little name-dropping.

That hope is in Jesus.

OK, you can open your eyes again (Oops, that name is still there. My “bad.”)

Anyway…

If you’ve read this far, kudos to you. Because that means a little cold, hard Truth doesn’t bother or scare you. And, that’s impressive. Because, these days, most of the world despises anyone who would dare mention the aforementioned name. Unless, of course, it’s to use that name as an addition to their f-bomb arsenal.

Maybe it’s because I know I’m in the final third of my life, but I don’t care who’s offended by the Truth. I prefer that they actually read it, or listen to it, with a hunger and thirst for hope it can provide. But it seems that way too many people would rather gripe and whine about how much they’re oppressed. And they do that on their thousand dollar phones.

Hmm, oppression ain’t what it used to be.

No reason it can never happen here.
This is the place and time to face your fear.
Financial plans end up rhetorical.
The errors made aren’t simply clerical.
Be never-yielding like the tiger’s tooth
And face the cold hard truth!

(from my song “Cold, Hard Truth”)

First day of the week. On this topic I will speak.

You can find differing opinions and evidence about which day is the actual first day of the week. Without trying I’ve already seen conflicting opinions. And, not surprisingly, some people get more than a little upset when you disagree with or challenge their position.

So, since today is the first day of the week, here’s an objective opinion about it.

For the decades I’ve been on the planet, Saturday and Sunday were considered “the weekend.” And since the weekEND couldn’t possibly be the same as the week (with no end at the end), then the week doesn’t start on Saturday or Sunday.

Therefore (remember, any time you see a therefore, find out what it’s there for), that leaves only five other possibilities for the first day of the week. And (you’re probably thinking ahead right now, but hang on) I think it’s quite easy to rule them out one by one.

Friday comes right before “the weekend.” So, it couldn’t possibly lead off the week. Thursday and Wednesday are relegated to also-ran-middle-of-the-week status. So, no first day there. And Tuesday starts off with a TWO sound. And everyone knows two can never be one. So, now we’re left with a single choice.

And that single choice is THE correct choice. Yep. Monday, without a doubt, is the first day of the week. An regardless of how it makes you feel, there’s the indisputable facts. So, I recommend no whining about it. No bleary-eyed Monday morning grumbles and groans.

Nope. I recommend you don’t build up one day over another. Just be glad for every single day of life. Because every single day of life is a day you didn’t earn. It was a precious gift. It IS a precious gift. And it is brought to you by the Creator of Heaven, Earth, solar systems, galaxies, and the universe. The Creator of you and me. And the creator of the wind. So, take off right now, and…

Ride The Wind

Monday morning put your wings on tight.
Wouldn’t wanna lose ’em in the middle of a flight.
Don’t forget wings for your one best friend…
Need a navigator, when you’re gonna ride the wind.

Check the weather. Is the blue sky blue?
Just a little lightning is enough to throttle you.
Wear your goggles, and I recommend
You take along some gloves when you’re gonna ride the wind.

Nothing better than to fly up high
Soaring with the eagles, it’s like dancing in the sky.
Don’t you worry when it has to end…
There’s always tomorrow when you’re gonna ride the wind.

Perilous thoughts in manipulated robots

Check out this word definition: “full of danger or risk, exposed to imminent risk of disaster or ruin” That’s the definition of perilous. And it certainly describes the times we find ourselves in right now. But these dangerous days aren’t because of weather. There’s an inherent risk to living in a world filled with people whose perilous thoughts manifest, clearly, on just about every digital platform there is.

But the perilous thoughts, of perilous men, should not destroy your hope.

Because perilous men (and women) will only flourish for a little while. There’s a very good book that talks about this. It mentions how so many men only love themselves, or money, or pleasure. And how they become boastful, full of false pride, unthankful, unloving, unforgiving, brutal, and despising anything good.

All those descriptions started out as perilous thoughts.

And those same “grownups” tend to raise disrespectful and disobedient kids. No surprise. These days, you can be mocked for daring to use the term “disobedient kids.” But mockers don’t realize that an obedient, respectful kid is almost always one who’s being (or has been) raised in a happy home. And that’s a home where discipline is dealt out fairly and with love.

So, here’s the deal. Kids need a moral compass. A trustworthy compass of truth that won’t change with the election of a new class of politicians. And the Truth that can be trusted not to change with the passing of another million laws. Truth that can be trusted not to change just because it isn’t cool anymore.

I want all kids, from the moment they are conceived, to be loved.

And I want them to be loved with a love that surpasses simple, tiny human understanding. A love that doesn’t just give them a cola and a smile and a hug. And a love that encompasses their spirit forever.

Of course, I realize that my old-fashioned perspective means I’ll probably never have a huge audience of readers and listeners. But, as a certain song recommends, “Do right and risk the consequences.”

So, in these (and the coming) perilous times look up. Equip yourself for every good work. And look up. Because one day the clouds WILL carry our Hope.

Because you live on a planet,
And in a day, He has made.
And the planet is not dying,
So you can live unafraid
Unless you live on a planet,
And in a day, you designed.
‘Cause then you’ll have to pay, yourself,
For what was wrong in your mind.

Dream Town. I remember playing a multi-timbral sound on my fairly new Korg Triton keyboard several years ago. And the ethereal setting immediately set my imagination in motion. It was one of those magical moments songwriters love almost as much as anything. At least I do.

And that particular moment took me to Dream Town.

If you’re a songwriter, you know what I mean when I say the song flowed out and fell into place. Basically, as I played around on the keyboard, the lyrics slid right into the melody. And I didn’t even have to compile a collection of sounds to get the feel I wanted.

They were just there. So, all I had to do was let my fingers go with the flow. And before I knew it, the song was born. And even though it was one of the first songs I composed for the personalized songs for kids I used to sell, it ended up closer to the end. Because it just sort of felt natural (maybe even supernatural) to end up in…

Dreamtown

And now…where you will go
The clouds all hang low
To soften the sun and the moon.

The rain…falls on your hand
And all of the land
Is blurred in the mist of this tune.

You can’t get there with open eyes.
You’ll travel faster lying down.
And on the wings of alabaster butterflies
You’ll float away to Dreamtown.

Instrumental

And there…’round that sweet bend
The world is your friend
And nothing can take that away.

So go…and don’t you look back
Hold fast to the track
And leave all the cares of the day.

Chorus…inst…end

33 years so quickly disappears

33 years have passed since an exotic woman said one word and changed my life. And those years disappeared in just a few blinks of my eyes. How is it possible?

Yep, it was 33 years ago, today, that I got married.

And a couple of years ago, I shared the story of how it happened. And the story shows how, by all rights, it should never have happened. Because the odds against it seemed almost insurmountable. But I firmly believe in the power of prayer. And similar prayers were lifted up to God from both the he and the she.

Here’s the story I shared a couple of years ago…

It all began, as stories often do, with a chance meeting. And I say “chance” because it wasn’t planned in any way, shape, or form. My four-piece band had just been booked for an entire month in a snazzy Hilton Hotel overlooking Pensacola Bay in, you guessed it, Pensacola, Florida.

And we were all excited, naturally, to spend the month of June (1985) playing music at night and hittin’ the beach every day. By the way, those beaches, with sand as white as table sugar, and with water every shade of blue to green, are some of the best in America. If you’re an avid surfer, Pensacola’s not gonna light your fire. But the rest of it is pure coastal delight.

So, that set the mood for a great month.

And it was on our first or second night there, on a band break, when I spotted a beach babe I couldn’t take my eyes off. But I didn’t wanna look like a dork. So, of course I’d avert my attention anytime there was a chance she’d look in my direction. Gotta be cool. Right?

But I just couldn’t keep from watching her move around the room. She served drinks in the hotel’s posh, first-floor nightclub where our band played. So, naturally, there were lots of opportunities to stare. And I’m a guy, a musician type guy, so of course I stared. Duh.

Well, I could go on and on just with those kinds of details. But I know you want me to get to the good stuff. And I’m eager to share that with you, too.

So, I introduced myself to her one night on a break. And she was so easy to talk to. Not all beautiful girls are. But she was. And she even laughed (probably out of feeling sorry for me) when I made a dorky reference to the Chuck Berry song, Maybellene. (You had to be there, and I’m glad you weren’t.)

There were a few other bits of casual conversation during my month in the Pensacola Hilton. But that was that. Plus, the babe was married. And I had a girlfriend in another city at the time. So, booking ends. Band leaves. End of story.

Not so fast

Because about 10 months later, I was re-booked back into the Pensacola Hilton. Only that time I was a solo. And I was booked up in the swanky, intimate nightclub on the 15th floor. As a house act, which meant the booking was ongoing. And my room literally shared a wall with the nightclub. So, my commute to work was about a 10 yard walk.

But better than all that…

On my first night to play, there she was. The babe from the year before. And she worked full-time in the same place I played music. (Be still my incredibly rhythmic, beating heart.)

And guess what? She remembered me. And she was just as nice, and easy to talk to, as before. We would be “working” together a lot. So, that was a huge plus.

As it turned out, we became friends. Or at least friendly enough to feel like we were friends. And when the workers decided to “go out for a drink” or head to the all-night diner after work, she (and others) would invite me along. Uh…yeah…I wasn’t gonna pass up any opportunities to see more of her.

Now, before you start to think ahead to things you think we might have done. We didn’t. And that’s in spite of the spark we both began to notice. But, for some ridiculous reason (probably had something to do with paying attention to my moral conduct) I didn’t make any attempts to break down her resistance. And she did nothing to cause me to believe her resistance could be broken down.

Nothing.

We stayed friends only.

But, here’s a little catch. And a little curled up edge in the protective layer where I saw the potential for an opportunity that could lead to a chance. That chance a guy looks for when he believes he’s found “the one.”

And that little “catch” was I knew her husband. A part-time conga player and all-around cad. A ne’er-do-well. And you would not believe how much of a particularly stupid philanderer. I call him that because, well, “Have you SEEN your wife?” I thought to myself.

So, I knew, well believed in my soul, that the stupid conga player would eventually mess up his marriage beyond repair. And that’s in spite of his wife’s willingness to continue to try and work things out. By the way, that’s part of what appealed to me about her. She still believed in working on a marriage. And she lived out that belief.

I decided, before I left my Pensacola booking for good, that I wanted to be with her. Or at least somebody exactly like her. So, that meant her. Because nobody’s exactly like her.

And with that belief firmly established in my brain, I wrote a birthday card and note to her a month after I left to hit the road. I addressed it to the Hilton. And she got it. She later told me it made quite an impression with her fellow workers.

Then, every once in a while, I’d write another short note and mail it to her in care of the hotel. And I carried on like that for almost three years. Keep in mind, these weren’t love letters. In fact, I usually just sent funny cartoons. Or quizzes. Or drawings. Not to profess love and adoration. I’m not that weird. Just to stay on her radar and help her get to know my incredible sense of humor. That way she’d know I wasn’t just another incredibly handsome Adonis.

And only once in a great while would she reply. But only to tell me to stop writing. Or to tell me I should find someone in my own town.

Trouble was…for those three years…my “own town” changed about every week or two.

Finally, though, I got off the road and landed in the Denver, Colorado metro area. And I wrote to the girl in Pensacola to let her know I was off the road. And she wrote to tell me that I should be able to “find somebody local, now.”

So, I finally (and reluctantly) gave up. Except to send a Christmas card or some sort of card. I don’t remember which. Anyway…I gave up. And that was that.

But then…

A couple of months passed, and I received a letter from Pensacola. Yes, from her. And in it she said if I was still interested, her divorce had been finalized several months before. And she said she had been thinking about me because of all those cards, letters, and notes. Score one for the persistent paperwork.

She said I could call if I still wanted to and included her phone number. So, I played it cool and waited a while, till after lunch, and called. And our phone call turned into another. And another and so on. This was back when a long distance call could be a hard hit to the old budget. And our phone bills racked up into triple digits.

But I also started writing her more. Every day in fact. For months. Sometimes two and three letters a day. Until one day we decided I should go to Florida and see her. So, I hocked a keyboard, bought a plane ticket, and flew to Pensacola where I spent a few days discovering the amazing woman I figured she’d be. And she lived in the lower half of a house, on Perdido Bay, that she and her parents bought together. And one of her 5 sisters lived right next door.

So, I got to meet the whole family on that trip. In addition to her 5 sisters, there were 2 brothers, about 19 kids, the siblings’ wives and husbands, and even friends of the family. And I think they all wanted to see the long-haired mountain man who had come to call.

After that, she visited me, in Denver, on her way to California for another visit with friends out there. And by that time she was obviously hopelessly hooked. And she knew, whether she’d ever admit this or not, there would or could be no other for her.

So, on my final visit to her place in Pensacola, a couple months later, I offered her the opportunity to spend the rest of her life with me. And she said that one word I mentioned at the start of this story…yes.

That was August 7, 1989. And on February 16, 1990 we both said yes. And we’ve been together the whole 31 33 years since then. I can’t speak for myself. But I can say she feels totally blessed by it all.

(of course, there’s a lot of tongue-in-cheek going on: I received the bigger blessing)

Stay tuned,
