Rejoice always - nobody said it was gonna be easy.

Are you able to rejoice always?

I believe most people who have ever known me for a while would tell you I’m an “up” person. Generally speaking I’d rather laugh in the face of adversity. And generally speaking…I do. There’s a place in the Bible where it actually says to “rejoice always“, and then it immediately adds…”pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” These are three things you never fail to do…right? Yeah, me neither.

Rejoice always - nobody said it was gonna be easy.

I’ll let you in on a little secret…I don’t rejoice always. I want to. And many, many times I succeed. But then the world gets in my face, and my rejoicing stops…at least for a little while. You might think, by reading the many happy-go-lucky rhymes and lyrics I’ve written here on my website, that I’d never have any problems leaning on God in times of trouble. It’s easy to rejoice when things are going well. But that’s not a good representation of where your heart and mind are. It’s when times get tough that you’ll know where your trust and faith truly are. I’ll break down that Bible verse, I shared with you a few lines ago, into three parts and show you what I mean. First…

Rejoice always.

Why would God inspire someone to write that if He knew it was impossible for you to do? The short answer is…He wouldn’t. Your Creator knows you better than you know yourself. And if He says you should always rejoice, He knows it’s something you’re able to do…if you only will. So will you? Can you make it an act of your will to rejoice, when your day, week, or year go horribly wrong? Yes…you can. But will you? I seriously doubt you’ll be successful every time. Or that you’ve been successful rejoicing your whole life. I don’t want you to think I’m jumping on your case. Like I said, I fail too. Last year, 2016, was a horrible year for me. And each time something went wrong, I had an opportunity to either choose to rejoice anyway…or choose to justify my gripes and grumbles. I’ll admit there were times I did some of that justifying. And here’s why. I didn’t…

Pray without ceasing.

Nope. I didn’t do that. I prayed often. And I prayed with passion and conviction. But I didn’t pray without ceasing. Of course, that doesn’t mean you go through your day doing nothing but praying. God knows you have responsibilities and work to do. It’s an illustration of mindset…an encouragement to not let a day go by without talking to the One who made you, loves you, and wants to hear from you. God wants to build up your courage and strength. He wants to help you. But He won’t force His help on you. If you want to do everything entirely on your own, He’ll let you. However, He also knows you’ll mess things up without Him. And you’ll start to gripe and grumble. That’s when you’ll forget…

In everything give thanks.

Now, don’t even start to think I mean you should thank God for all the bad things that happen to you. That would just be stupid. First, He didn’t do those bad things to you. And second, He wants only the best for you. When bad things happen, it’s because either you made some bad choices…or you’re suffering the effects of a broken world and the broken people in it. But you should give thanks in the middle of everything that happens because it’s your chance to let God know you trust and love Him. You’re thanking Him for the life you have and the strength and courage to face another day. After all…without Him you wouldn’t even exist.

The reason bad things happen is because people would rather serve self than to serve others. And they certainly don’t want to serve God. They want to be like the god of this age, who is not the one true, living, loving God of all creation. Selfishness is the root cause of everything bad in this world. And you certainly can’t accuse the God of the Bible of selfishness. Only the Biblical God sacrificed Himself for the world. The rest of the religions require you to do all the work. Jesus came to earth as a man and paid the ultimate price for you to have eternal life. Don’t you love that? If so…

Rejoice Always

Rejoice…
Through the days of milk and honey.
Rejoice…
Even when your days break down.
Rejoice…
Troubles will not last forever.
Rejoice…
And forget about that frown.
Raise your vibrant, vital voice
‘Cause today you’ve got a choice.
Rejoice!

I once was blind...and I still need glasses.

I once was blind…

Even in the God-less movies you’ll often see a funeral scene where someone is singing “Amazing Grace”. The words to the song talk about getting your sight back…right? Well, not exactly. The writer was actually acknowledging a lack of vision or recognition of the Truth. For example…when I say, “I once was blind, but now I see,” I’m talking about what I didn’t realize before makes sense to me now. And it’s great when that happens.

There’s an important ingredient involved in being able to see things you couldn’t see before. Humility. If you can humble yourself and admit when you’re wrong, you’ll clear up your bouts with blindness much more quickly. But that’s much easier said than done…isn’t it?

What are you afraid will happen when you humble yourself? Do you think this mean ol’ world will slap you down and you won’t be able to get back up? Don’t get me wrong…I know this mean ol’ world can slap you around and down. But with God’s help, you can get back up every time. So, are you afraid other people will think you’re a wimp for humbling yourself? Well, maybe if humbling yourself is all you ever do. False humility is almost as bad as no humility. And I promise it won’t look good on you.

I once was blind like that.

But when you’re willing to admit you don’t have all the answers…or you’re willing to admit you were wrong, you’re in a place so many people don’t have the nerve to go. You’re in God’s grace. He’ll open the eyes of your understanding, and you’ll leave those doubters in the dirt. Possibly forever.

I didn’t get any lasting wisdom or understanding until I realized and admitted my ways are wrong when they disagree with God and His word. Once I was willing to humble myself, I changed the course of eternity, for me, forever. I set a course for blue skies and paradise. I still need glasses to see the way, but I know I’m going. Wanna go, too?

Got the sails up and a port in mind.
There’s a cool wind, blowing strong and kind.
Leaving doubt and fear so far behind…
I can see now where I once was blind.

An abundance of love from God equals freedom.

Do you have an abundance of love in your life? Or simply an abundance of things?

An abundance of love in your life doesn’t manifest itself in how much stuff you have. Or how much stuff you give to others. The things you can give others will never measure up to the love you give. And your Creator says your “life does not consist in the abundance of things…”

It’s vital to know what’s more (and most) important to God for your life. After all, He’s the source of life. He wants you to have life more abundantly. Living forever would be pretty abundant life…wouldn’t you agree? Well, if God is the only one who can see to it you live forever…and if Jesus is the only way to get to God…doesn’t it make sense to understand what’s important to God? Here’s what makes the Christian faith worth leaving everything else for…

God’s abundance of love

His love is true, and that’s the truth. And you might recall from the millions of times people have quoted Jesus when He said, “…the truth shall make you free.” God’s willingness to give you freedom forever is the ultimate illustration of his abundance of love toward you. Do you enjoy that freedom yet? Or are you working hard every day to get more things?

Freedom

Faith working through love…
Let’s praise God for our liberty…
Christ paid off our debt…
Only in Him are we truly free.

Love leads into joy…
Law leads back into slavery…
God gave us The Way.
Just believe, and we’re truly free.

Freedom from the law that kills,
And freedom with our own free wills,
Freedom from the world of sin…
Just let Jesus in, let the joy begin
Share a hopeful grin, with the Lord “We Win”!
Praise God for what we can become
With our freedom.

What law couldn’t do
Jesus did with finality.
He rose up from the dead
And promised the same life for you and me.

So we have…

Chorus…instrumental…chorus twice

God answers my prayers - and yours.

God Answers My Prayers

If and when someone asks you why you’re a Christian, I hope one of your answers is: Because God answers my prayers. You can truly believe that He does. How? Trust His word that says He does. Where does His word say that He answers prayers? Basically all through the Bible you can find example after example. And in 1 John, it clearly says God hears and answers prayers. But there’s an important caveat…

…are you praying for God’s will? Or your own? Even Jesus didn’t pray according to His own will. In the garden of Gethsemane, He prayed to His Father about His impending death and still managed to say, “…not as I will, but as You will.” Jesus had full confidence that God could and would hear and answer His prayers. Do you have even a fraction of that sort of confidence in your Creator? Can you say with any confidence at all…

God answers my prayers?

If you can’t believe it’s true…or that you’re going through more than you can handle and you don’t understand why God isn’t answering your prayers…read Paul’s writings. You’ll discover a life with many more hardships than you’ll probably ever have to endure. And yet you’ll also discover a man who could sing praises to God from prison. Can you forget about yourself and your troubles long enough to sing a joyful song to God? Join me wherever you are, and let’s sing to Him today.

To Be

Count the million, billion, trillion images
Through a thousand thoughts today…
And you’ll never ever nearly nullify
That our Lord’s the only Way…

To be lifted up out of the grave…
And to be sure that my Creator cares…
To be raised in the fullness of life…
To be blessed as God answers my prayers.

There is only one Way to overcome the world

Can you overcome the world?

The question in the picture below asks if it’s still possible to overcome the world. It’s sort of a trick question, because you were never able to overcome the world. Don’t feel bad. Neither was anyone else…on their own power. Realizing this gives you access to awesome power.

Wouldn’t it be great if, everywhere you went, people were just plain easy to get along with? Imagine a world where everyone was at peace and willing and able to pass it along to everyone else. Yep, just close your eyes and see yourself in that peaceful world. Sigh…so nice.

Wake up! You didn’t overcome the world!

It’s just a nice daydream. Spend a little time reading comments below videos on YouTube, and you’ll see the world isn’t like what I described above. And Jesus said that “in the world you will have tribulation.” But, thankfully, He added, “but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Notice how He didn’t just say keep a stiff upper lip? Or man up? He didn’t tell us to simply grin and bear it. He said “be of good cheer“.

Whatever happens in this world is temporary. When you know you’re gonna live forever with the one, true, living, loving Creator of heaven and earth, you should be able to trust Him and be of good cheer. One day you’ll leave this world full of tribulation and live forever in a real paradise. It won’t be some Hollywood, make-believe, physics-defying world of mystical magic. It’ll be a real place with real human beings, real surroundings, and most importantly…the real God.

Are you going? Have you gotten your name on the passenger list? Your ticket has already been paid. Here are the lyrics I wrote for a song that talks about the upcoming…

Real Paradise

I don’t believe
In magic…hocus pocus.
I do believe
My treasure’s where I focus.

Jesus, Redeemer, Creator of Heaven
Tells every dear Christian who dies…
We will be with him forever and ever.
Now I call that real paradise.

You can receive
A blessing you can’t pay for.
What would you waste
Another single day for?

Jesus, the Savior, and Great Overcomer
Will love you and open your eyes.
There is no sin that His blood will not cover.
Now, I call that real paradise.

Instrumental…

I love the way His promise won’t forsake me.
And there’s no end to where His Grace will take me.

Jesus, the Lamb, without spot without blemish,
The Truth who the world still denies.
The world is against me, but Jesus is for me.
Now I call that real paradise.

Someone out there is blind and longs to see.

Is There Someone Out There?

Now, let me start right off with this explanation…when I talk about someone out there, I’m not talking about outer space. That’s nonsense, and I won’t dignify those hokey theories with any part of this story.

I’m sure you’ve felt this way, no matter who you are or what walk of life you’re from. You just know there’s someone “out there” who surely thinks like you, feels the way you feel, and looks at life like you do. Am I right? Well, with 7 billion people on the planet, it’s a pretty good bet you’re right. There’s bound to be at least one other person who’s as wacky, silly, or off-center as you. Or serious, contemplative, and reserved. Or blind and longs to see.

But tell me this. Even if they’re out there, is that how you justify or signify your own thoughts and existence? Does having compadres make you right? Or important? Or cool?

My answer is a resounding “no!”

Even if there are thousands of other people like you, there’s not one EXACTLY like you. Not one. It’s an incredible feat of human design that you’re so individual. You have your own fingerprints, your own unique eyes, and your own DNA. While everyone else on the planet is similar…they’re not the same. And you can jump for joy at this news because it means you’re important, significant, valid.

As I started out saying…there are no aliens “out there” ready to lend an answer or scoop you up for a probe. But there is someone out there. That someone is your Creator. And He IS ready to scoop you up in His loving hands and give you eternal life. All you gotta do is ask. Admit you’re blind and ask to see. He’ll make sure you do.

And guess what? I’m someone like you…and I already asked. Read the lyrics below and see if they sound like you. If so, wouldn’t you like to know things can get eternally better?

Someone Out There

I never knew, and they thought that I withdrew,
But no one could say for sure if I was gone.
The crowds would multiply, and I’d always wonder why,
But I knew that they would fade in light of dawn.

Still I think that someone out there knows.
I think there’s someone out there just like me…
Someone who is crazy with a notion to be sane…
Someone who is blind and longs to see.

I never really cared, and they figured that I dared
To be where other people dared not go.
They just misunderstood, but even if they really could,
They’d never try to help me out with what they know.

Still I think that someone out there knows.
I know that someone knows.
I cannot be alone, though my troubles are my own.
Someone out there knows.
I know that someone knows.
I know they know.

Better times - are they in your past or your future?

Most people are looking for better times

Better times, for many people…if not most…are either somewhere in the past or in the future. Do you think that way? If so, why? Are things not going like you want or prefer? And what criteria needs to be met before you think things are better? Well, I’d like to make the case why I believe you should consider today as the day your better times begin.

Think back in your past as far as you can. Or at least think back to a time you feel was better. Can you see yourself smiling, laughing, having a good time? What were you doing? What made it better? Got a clear picture in your mind? Good. Now…go there and pick up where you left off. What? Can’t do it? Why not? Oh yeah…it’s impossible to go back to any time in the past.

Try grabbing better times from the future.

Oops. You can’t do that either can you? Why? Because the future is a time you can only live in when it gets here. And then it isn’t the future anymore. It’s now.

And that’s the key. If you have any hope of making times better than what you’re experiencing or what you’ve been experiencing lately, you have to work on it NOW. Now is the only time you can work in. So what are waiting for? Read this short rhyme to help you remember…and then get to work. Any questions?

Is there a day you go back to when you think of better times?
Or do you think that day is somewhere up ahead?
But either way it’s a day when all your cares will melt away,
And then your life will be fulfilling dreams instead.

Well, let me say, I’m for living with that hope inside your heart.
I do believe in looking for a better way.
But cares won’t go until you know your Creator loves you so.
That’s how the better times you need begin today. ~Tony Funderburk

Summer love had a double meaning for me.

Summer Love and its double meaning

Our recent warm weather here in Colorado got me thinking back to when I was a young boy, hearing songs on the radio about summer love. Of course, I was too young for them to mean much to me. But when I got a little older, they took on quite a new meaning. My parents divorced when I was only about 4. And they moved away from each other. My mom remarried and lived in Kansas, and my dad remarried and lived in Texas. Each year my younger brother and I would take two 18 hour train trips. At the end of each school year we’d board in Houston, bound for Kansas City. At the end of each summer, we’d make the return trip.

Summer love had a double meaning for me.

Girls always held a special place in my heart. I was never one of those boys who didn’t like ’em. They had nicer hair, smelled better, and were so much more fun to look at. So, as I got older, of course I had girlfriends. From junior high through the end of my school years I’d find myself “going steady” or passing notes to and from girls in classes…even though that was against the rules.

Eventually, in high school, each year I’d find myself in a “special relationship” for most of the nine months of school. But, inevitably I’d have to drop out of it when it was time to head to Kansas. Then, I’d find a summer love in Kansas and have to give that up when it time to head back to school in Texas.

So summer love was a two-headed dragon for me.

At the time it seemed like a pretty tough thing to overcome each year. However, hindsight provides clarity with a much healthier perspective. You grow out of things like that, and you come to understand how fleeting and unimportant those feelings can be. Not insignificant in your road to maturity…simply unimportant to who you become. And about four years after I left high school, I wrote a song about “the girl” I never knew in summer.

And you won’t be able to understand everything I say in the lyrics to this song. That was by design. In many of my early writings, I wanted to express my thoughts in words that only I could understand. It was my purpose to let the reader or listener get whatever they wanted from it…while only I knew exactly what it meant. That’s how this song, about a summer love that never happened, came about…

I Never Knew You In Summer

Let’s talk…a while…
And try to find the light.
Let’s see what we’ve learned
And what we know.
I want…to know…
Everything about you…
Where you’ve been,
Where you are,
And where you’re going to go, because…

I never knew you in summer.
I always thought I would.
I never made the right decision
Or ever worked with any precision.
Now…I wish I could.

Please stay…with me…
And tell me all you can.
I’ll tell you all my stories and how I want to feel.
Life is…so short…
And now I understand.
Don’t try to hide, when you’ve nothing to conceal.

I never knew you in summer.
I always thought I would.
I never made the right decision
Or ever worked with any precision.
Now…I wish I could.

Defending the faith is part of your job as a Christian

Defending the faith is in the job description

If you’re a Christian, defending the faith isn’t an option. It’s part of your job…your commission. And the world is getting increasingly hostile toward us. So, how do you stay optimistic and keep a good attitude when most people don’t even wanna hear what you have to say? My recommendation is to model yourself after Paul…who modeled himself after the one true, living, loving Creator. Focus on Paul’s writings. If you’re a Christian, he wrote to YOU.

Defending the faith is part of your job as a Christian

Paul talked about defending the faith, which, he said “…we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.” He had met Jesus face to face after being totally convinced that Jesus was crucified and done away with. Imagine how your worldview would be shaken if you saw someone put to death…and then met them face to face at a later time. Don’t you think you might be persuaded to rethink your position?

Think about your unique way of defending the faith.

No one else has your exact way of saying something. Use your gifts to their fullest potential and stand up for the One who fell down for you. Keep in mind…we win. It might not be today, or tomorrow, or even this year. You might not win any arguments with unbelievers, but you will win in the final outcome. Take that to the bank.

Paul was so sure of this he was willing to suffer (and did suffer) torture, ridicule, and finally execution. Discover, all through Paul’s writings, a man so changed by his knowledge of God’s grace, through Jesus, that he couldn’t and wouldn’t be swayed. In fact, he stood up to the original apostles who walked with Jesus, and he told them where and when they were being hypocrites. You gotta know that wasn’t a popular position to take. But…

Don’t stand for something just because it’s popular.

Stand for your Christian faith because you know it’s right, just, and merciful to anyone who wants it. Remember, defending the faith is part of your job description. You’re not gonna win any popularity contests or special awards from the government. But you WILL be storing up treasures in Heaven…the kind of treasures that never rust, corrode, or simply fade away. The wages have already been paid for you. Are you working to earn them?

And I have to trust that my God is just.
And I feel my boldness increase.
I’m a dissident, and I’m an instrument
For the one true Way to peace.

(from the song “One True Way to Peace” in the Amen collection)

Saturday morning cartoons - they used to make us laugh

The sad demise of Saturday morning cartoons

Have you noticed how Saturday morning cartoons got pushed aside for more “educational” and “financially viable” programs? Even before the cartoons disappeared they weren’t funny and fun anymore. I understand that TV stations are businesses. And they can run whatever makes them money so they can stay on the air. But it’s sad that something so enduring and endearing had to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

When I was a little kid there was no better combination than Saturday morning, cartoons, and a big bowl of cereal. My younger brother and I would get up, sleepy-eyed, go into the kitchen, fill up a bowl of Cheerios or Frosted Flakes or something similar, pour on the milk, and head for the den. Then, it was simply a matter of choosing one of the three channels available and looking for the cartoons we liked the most.

There was The Roadrunner and Coyote, Yosemite Sam, Bugs Bunny, Sylvester and Tweety, Quick Draw McGraw, Mighty Mouse, Tennessee Tuxedo and his Tales, the Professor and Poindexter, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and I could go on and on and on. You know what they all had in common? They were funny. Impossible situations with impossible characters and just plain goofy, funny entertainment.

Cartoons, back then, weren’t trying to save the world from alien invasions or full of diverse aliens who had to learn to get along in order to solve a mystery. And cartoons weren’t always trying to slip in some sort of social message. Like I said, they were just plain ol’ goofy, funny animation with goofy, funny sound effects. They made us laugh, and laughter truly is medicine. I miss them and the innocence that went with ’em. What about you…do you have any cartoon memories?

Saturday Morning Cartoons

Get out the cereal spoons.
It’s time for funny cartoons.
Watch a monkey fly a rocket
Or a kitty pick a pocket”
It’s time for funny cartoons.

Turn on the big screen TV.
They’re really something to see”
Watch a birdie that is talkin’
To a dog on two legs walkin’.
Cartoons set funny bones free.

Later we’ll go out and play
And chase all the rainclouds away,
But for now we’ll keep on laughin’
At the polka dot giraffe “˜n
Watch all the cartoons today.

Grace changes everything - but there's a catch...it has to be God's grace.

Grace Changes Everything
Even destruction into construction

When you’re gracious to others, many times you’ll discover they appreciate it. Not always, but often. It’s just a simple matter of manners. Your grace to them can break down barriers of belief, doors of distrust, and walls of wondering. But there’s one thing your gracious attitude won’t do…change somebody forever. So, when I say grace changes everything, I’m talking about God’s grace…the grace He showed toward everyone of us by offering us Jesus as a sacrifice for our human weaknesses. And that grace can change you (and where you’ll live) forever.

Have you ever met someone at one point in your life who loved to party, smoke, curse, and do whatever else felt good to do? Then, at some later point in your life, you meet them again, and they don’t live that way any more? In fact, they talk like one of those do-gooder Christians…because they, in fact, became one. Have you ever met someone like that? I have. As a matter of fact, many someones like that.

Grace changes everything for people who want it.

The key to being changed forever is hearing about the saving grace of Jesus and wanting it. It’s not enough to simply say “it sounds good” or “sure, that seems like a good idea…let me sleep on it.” No, you gotta want to change. You need to know you need to change. And it’s important to realize you haven’t done anything bad enough to keep you out of God’s grace. The love of Jesus can save you from yourself and anything you’ve done. Anything. Here’s an example…

There was a guy named Saul, who lived about 2000 years ago. And he was wholeheartedly dedicated to his Jewish faith. So much so that he was seeking out the new Christian religion of that time and persecuting anyone who would dare say Jesus was their Messiah. By persecuting, I mean even killing them. He believed what they were doing was blasphemy…a crime and sin punishable by death. Yikes!

Grace sure changed Saul.

He met Jesus…AFTER Jesus had been killed! Can you imagine meeting someone, face to face, when you just knew that person had already been killed? That might shake your foundation a little…don’t you think? Well, it certainly shook Saul’s. Jesus changed him forever. Even changed his name to Paul. And when he first started teaching about the Christian faith, people talked about how he had been that guy persecuting them and now he was preaching to them.

Once people listened to Paul’s messages, they saw the glory of God in him. That’s one example of how God’s grace changes everything. Paul was changed forever, and he wanted everyone to know how they could be, too. And that’s why I write, sing, and talk about all this. I want you to know how grace can change you forever, too. But you gotta be willing to listen. And you gotta want to be changed forever.

Do you want it?

Here are the lyrics to a song I wrote a few years ago about how the grace and love of Jesus changes you.

Drawn To You

Maybe it’s Your grace.  I don’t know.
It could be Your Word.  I’m not sure.
But You have a way of refining my thoughts.
Your Will is my strength.
Your Will is my cure.

Anytime it’s me making it up
Show me I’m wrong to just forget You.
You barely lift a finger, and You change my whole direction.
What else can I say?  What more can I do?

I’m drawn to You
Like a June-bug to the light.
I’m drawn to You
Like a boxer to the fight.
I’m drawn to You
Like a sweet tooth and ice cream,
And it may all sound extreme,
But I’m drawn to You.

Maybe I’ll wake up…maybe soon
And find You take me home…
Who can say?
“˜Til then I’ll live it out…’til then I’ll follow through
And see how many more might feel the same way.

Chorus

Jesus, help me, won’t You take me to my heart’s desire?
Nothing could mean more than having You to be my fire!
Take me higher…draw me near.

Chorus…instrumental…repeat chorus to end

Yes, fact facts...just make sure they're the actual facts.

You Gotta Face Facts

But when you face facts, make sure they’re the true facts…not merely someone else’s skewed interpretation. Yesterday I wrote about seeking wise counsel. It’s important to know that wise counsel is getting more and more difficult to find even when you are seeking it. Many people have opinions. But not many people have wisdom to go with those opinions.

If you’re about to start out on a journey into uncharted waters, you might discover even some of your friends will tell you it’s the wrong thing to do. While I certainly wouldn’t tell you never to listen to your friends, I would encourage you to examine their motives and quality of information…or lack of. Oftentimes you’ll discover they just don’t want you to work on something they’d never have the nerve to try. Other times you’ll find they have even more selfish motives. It’s sad. But true.

When you face facts, make sure they’re the actual facts.

Your big idea might be “the next big thing”. But it might only be a big idea in your head. If there’s no real audience for it, you might be humming to yourself and no one else. Not such a good idea. However, if you do some research and discover a hole in a market you truly believe you can fill in a new and creative way, go for it. And don’t let others, who would never attempt something so difficult, talk you out of it.

Here’s an insider tip…before you get started on your new adventure/venture…pray to God for wisdom, courage, and perseverance. You’ll need all three for the long haul. Sometimes when you face facts, it can seem like you’re facing impossible odds. But remember, with God, all things are possible. Here’s a song to encourage you…

Wise Counsel - do you seek it? Because it doesn't just fall on your head.

Wise Counsel. You need it even if you think you don’t.

Wise counsel isn’t the same thing as going to a psychiatrist or psychologist.

Not by a long shot. Wise counsel has to come from someone who has wisdom (not merely “smarts”) on a certain topic where you need help. No one has wisdom on every subject. In fact, most people don’t have much wisdom on most topics…but I digress.

When you actually seek wise counsel (and receive it), you get wise to yourself. You begin to realize where you’re being a fool. That’s extremely important to realize and confirm…because you can only overcome your lack of wisdom by accepting responsibility for your own foolish notions. Remember this, too…wherever and whenever you disagree with God, you’re wrong. If you say something in the Bible is “just a story” or “not relevant for our modern times” or “doesn’t mean what it literally says”, you’re being a fool. So…

Where do you find this wise counsel?

The only kind of person who can truly impart wisdom to you is someone who has tapped into the eternal source of wisdom. Yes, that’s God. I’m sorry if that offends you, but all other so-called wisdom is temporal and influenced by feelings and personal experiences. And those change from day to day. God’s wisdom never changes. It’s awesome to know that no matter where you go, what you do, and who you know…there are truths you can depend on forever.

Here’s a vitally important key to seeking and receiving wise counsel: Be ready to listen well. Yep…shut your mouth, AND shut your mind to other external distractions. You gotta listen when someone is willing and able to share God’s wisdom with you. Otherwise (notice that word…otherwise…it’s other wise) you’re wasting your time. More importantly, you’re wasting the time of the one who’s talking to you. That’s not wise.

It doesn’t matter how much education you have, your social status, or your economic level in this world. No matter how much you’ve read, attained, or achieved…you have areas in your life where seeking wise counsel would be the best thing you could do for yourself. Or for your family…your kids, your wife, husband, brother, sister, mother or father, son or daughter. It’s guaranteed there’s at least one part of your life where you’re failing. Are you willing to admit it? Are you ready to…

Get Wise

Don’t drink the wine of violence
Or eat the bread of hate.
You might just get away with it.
Can you afford to wait?

Don’t push and shove the simple.
Seek knowledge just like gold.
And in so doing you’ll lay up
Your treasures manifold.

A word to the confounded”
Pour light into your eyes.
If you expect more than neglect,
Get wisdom; yeah get wise.

Get wise to the deceiver.
Don’t harken to his lies.
Keep commanding understanding.
Get wisdom; yeah get wise.

Don’t walk, you, with the wicked.
Beware the scornful tongue.
Let never part your loving heart
And live forever young.

Life Love Loss - three things every human being will experience

Life Love Loss – Sound familiar?

Every human being who was ever born, is being born now, or will be born will experience these same three things: Life Love Loss. Obviously if you were born and you’re reading this now, you’ve experienced life. And no matter who might think something to the contrary, you’ve also experienced love…at least once in your life. Finally, since the birth to death ratio is always gonna be 1:1, you WILL experience loss. If not now, soon. But the life, love, and loss you experience here in this space/time continuum isn’t the final word on your existence.

Way back in 1986 my Dad died after battling with kidney failure for nine years. After suffering some unexplained illnesses for multiple weekends in a row, he finally decided to see a doctor. The doctor and hospital ran tests and discovered that his kidneys had failed, and they told him he would probably only live 2 to 4 years more. He did the hard work…in addition to dialysis…and proved them wrong by living more than twice that long. However, at the age of only 51 he finally succumbed to the “terminal” condition and slipped away into the presence of the living, loving, Creator.

To say I was close with my Dad would be an understatement. In fact, I quote him to this day. He was far from perfect (sort of like the rest of us), but he was MY Dad. And that made him the most important man in the world. Being a young man myself (I was 31 when he died) I felt the need to grieve the loss internally. You know…big boys don’t cry. And it would be six years before I wrote a musical tribute to him.

I’m sharing the words with you today. I hope they somehow help you cope, if you’re dealing with a loss…and rejoice if you’re experiencing a great love…and recognition of how precious your life is. What about you? What have you written or created as a memorial to life love loss or someone you love? Share it with me if you like. Here are the lyrics to the song for my Dad…

Fandango Street

Dwight was a boy anybody would employ
‘Cause he worked his fingers to the bone.
But he said he had to fly, get a piece of the sky.
So he took off for the great unknown.
Everybody said no, no, no. But he still had to go
To make his whole life complete
And look for Fandango Street.

He took himself a wife, as he made the change of life,
And the boy became a regular man.
They had a couple kids just like everybody did.
But it really wasn’t in the plan.
And his spirit said no, no, no.
That’s not the way you should go.
Should be pointing your feet on up to Fandango Street.

Oh, but somewhere the world took over

And left him thirsting for more.
Where was the milk and the honey
He had dreamed of all those years before?

He was moving right along feeling permanently strong
Thinking all he had to do was behave.
But a terminal disease slowly drove him to his knees,
And it took him to an early grave.
And his family said no, no, no.
But he still had to go
To make the journey complete and look for Fandango Street.

And to this day I say no, no, no.
But I know he had to go.
To make the journey complete and look for Fandango Street.
I hear him tapping his feet up on Fandango Street.
And so his life is complete, he dance on Fandango Street!

Multitasking lie is something you shouldn't buy

Multitasking is a lie

Ok, all you multitasking maniacs out there”I’m sure you’re ready to click away and check your email, post your Instagram, eat your lunch, and instant message your BFF. And if you already have”well”that just proves the point. Does that description sound like you? If so, it means you might be one of those who doesn’t yet realize how multitasking is a lie.

Multitasking lie is something you shouldn't buy

It’s impossible to literally “multitask”. A woman can’t keep her eyes on the road and apply eyeliner at the same time. One task or the other is going to suffer. A man can’t mow the lawn and watch the big game at the same time. (so ladies”please let him mow the lawn before or after the game”your lawn will thank you)

The point is”when it comes to real, positive, productive work getting done”you gotta be linear. Keep your goals clearly in focus and in line. Why would you risk your health and sanity attempting to do what one person cannot safely do?

You’re paying much more for the multitasking lie than you might realize.

That’s right, this isn’t simply a matter of productivity we’re talking about. Your mental, emotional, and even physical health are in danger when you don’t focus on one task at a time. A Stanford University study said multitaskers are “suckers for irrelevancy“. Ouch. That sounds harsh, on the surface, but researchers weren’t making mere visual observations. They ran tests on 100 students who thought they could do multiple things at once and found that “everything distracts them”. And that is”Bad For The Brain

Your brain can only focus on one task at a time. That’s because it just can’t complete two tasks at once. When you try to force it to do what it can’t do, you can actually cause damage. How about this? If you saw evidence that multitasking lowers your IQ by as much as 15 points, would you stop trying to multitask? And if you saw other evidence that shows how multitasking reduces your cognitive abilities and your brain density in the anterior cingulate cortex region, would you stop? Ok. If you can’t do it for yourself, can you do it for “them”?

Have you heard of emotional intelligence?

Yes, also known as your EQ, it’s a real thing. It’s related directly to your ability to engage in social settings, meetings, and other interact environments. If you multitask during those times, it shows either low self-awareness or low social awareness. TalentSmart is an online assessment company that provides individuals and companies with emotional intelligence evaluations. They say 90% of the top performers have high EQ scores. But multitaskers don’t score well.

This is not to say you can’t do more than one thing at a time. It IS to say you can’t accomplish more than one objective at a time. For example”

If your sales manager tells you to get 25 calls completed by lunch, you won’t be effective talking to potential clients on the company phone while chatting with your friends on your cell phone. You might even lose your job.

Here’s a sports analogy”

A runner wins the race by putting one foot in front of the other”faster than the other runners”but both feet don’t move forward at the same time. And the runner thinks about the finish line”the goal”and gets a mental picture of standing there as the winner. The runner who concentrates on anything but the race is almost inevitably not the winner. You can see plenty of videos, on YouTube, where runners lose the race they should have won because they started celebrating with the crowd before the race was over. That’s called taking your eyes off the prize.

More studies are coming out showing how ineffective it is for you to try to switch back and forth between projects or tasks. It actually costs time. It doesn’t save any. And there’s increasing evidence this switching habit could be a major cause in memory issues. It makes sense when you think about it. The more things you have going on at once, the more things you have to account for”and the more taxing on your brain functions. The more taxed your brain is, the less productive it is.

So, what can you do to get out of this multitasking downward spiral?

Try these tips:

  • Plan your day ““ organize must-do and must-get-done items as top priority
  • Decrease distractions ““ avoid emails, message apps, etc. until must-do’s are done
  • Take a break ““ anytime you feel the urge to merge multiple tasks

It’s important to understand you can’t get quality work done for someone when you’re working on their project AND someone else’s. Look at the word this way: someONE

When you prioritize and work from the top down, and when you begin to see each of the tasks get done, you might be surprised and relieved to notice how your brain stays much clearer. You might also begin to notice how much getting one thing completed pumps you up to tackle the next”and the next. And you might enjoy how much less stress you experience. By many accounts, stress is becoming one of the major concerns related to poor health.

You’re not a bad person for not knowing how multitasking is a lie.

But you may be doing bad things to yourself and those around you. Keep in mind you have the same twenty-four hours in your day that everyone else has. And your twenty-four hours are just as important as anyone else’s. So, make it a goal to maintain a healthier balance in your day. Your brain will thank you. Ad your body and emotions will thank you. Even your customers, clients, and co-workers will thank you.

Remember this: a laser beam focuses on one area and cuts through thick steel”while a shotgun spreads out and only makes dents in that same steel.

Don’t just make dents”cut on through”Focus. Don’t sell yourself short. Don’t trade your brainpower for inefficiency because now you know”multitasking is a lie.

You CAN not do it”I’m pulling for you,

A Little and a Lot - sometimes they're the same things

A Little and a Lot
Sometimes they can be the same thing

Have you ever met someone whose needs were completely met with almost nothing? I met someone like that way back in 1978. She told me how she’d just like a small, private island and live off the local plants and what she could catch in the sea. It sounded so intriguing I had to write a song about it. That’s what I did. If something sounded cool, or interesting, or off my beaten path…I’d write a song about it. I’ll share the lyrics to “A Little and a Lot”, and you can see if the young woman in the song reminds you of anyone.

A Little And A Lot

She likes to sit and watch,
Watch everything around her.
She knows enough of life
That not much can astound her.
She is a friend to me,
And I haven’t known her long.
We have some common ground,
When she listens to my song.
She wants to own an island
And live off the lazy sea,
And I can understand her
‘Cause she feels the same as me.
In time, I hope her plans come well within her reach.
I hope she finds herself sunning on her private beach.
‘Cause she only wants a little,
And it really means a lot,
And I know that she deserves it,
Though she tells me maybe not.
She likes to sit and watch…
Watch everything around her.

Here and there - now and then - decisions can change destinations.

Here and there – they can be times and places

In the English language we can use the same words, in the same order, in multiple ways with multiple meanings. Take the phrase, here and there, for example. It could imply something like, here at my house and there at your house. But it can also imply now, in this time and then, at a time in the past or even future. I’ve mentioned before how much I love wordplay. And this is one of the coolest examples of how complex even the simplest communications can be.

It’s important to realize how blessed you are to be able to express yourself in so many subtle, and yet complex, ways. You can use metaphors, similes, hyperbole, allegory, and just plain ol’ adjectives, adverbs, nouns, and pronouns to conjure up a myriad of images.

And it’s even more important to realize how your words can change your destination. Yep, you can say you’re moving to Timbuktu…and by golly, you might just end up there. That’s an example of how here and there are locations AND times. You could also choose to believe in only the things your five senses tell you. But ask yourself this, “Which of my five senses tells me that’s true?”

Here and there are locations I’m talking about right now.

Here is your life on earth…in this space/time continuum. And there is where you’ll be after you leave this space/time continuum. Are you certain where that will be? If not, do you think it’s worth looking into further than you have? After all, forever is a mighty long time.

I’m gonna share a poem I wrote 40 years ago…almost to the day, and it talks about a small cross-section of my life, at the time. I was illustrating how moments can pass by and decisions can change destinations. And I was also showing how time often blurs some memories while burning others into our brains…maybe forever. At first glance the poem might seem vague. But if you imagine yourself in the same situation, I bet it’ll become crystal clear.

See if speaks to any part of your life. Or would you even write or say it another way?

From There To Here

There we were
In the middle of a day.
We just knew it would last.
There was no other way.
The kite flew high
Above our heads,
But we still forget
The words we said.
And now I can almost see you.
I can almost free you from my mind.
And now I can almost say them…
I can almost say the words so hard to find.
Here I am
In the middle of a night.
It just lasts so long.
There must be another way.
Where are you?
Is your head upon your hand?
If it is, don’t be sorry.
There might just be a tomorrow…
So don’t feel you’ve taken all that you can stand.
