Dazed and confused even mentally abused

Dazed and confused. You could use that phrase to describe somebody who just survived a car crash. Or maybe somebody who’s just lost a loved one. And you could even use it to describe most people who get their information (and base their worldview) mostly from the well-known news sources.

Who wouldn’t be dazed and confused with all that misinformation?

Well, for starters…anyone who seeks, gets, and implements wisdom and discernment. And I said “for starters”, but that’s basically it.

Without the ability to use wisdom and discernment, you’re at the mercy of anyone who’s able to put cohesive thoughts together. And I’m talking about cohesive thoughts that might sound good, on the surface, but can actually damage your critical thinking abilities.

Because you’ll most likely start to fall for the narrative rather than even listen to what’s being said.

For example…I just watched a short video, on Twitter, where a big guy told a group of young guys with Trump t-shirts they were “brainwashed.” And the subject of Joe Biden came up. Someone mentioned how Biden said “if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or for Trump, then you ain’t black.”

Of course, the big guy didn’t believe Biden said that. Because he’s a willing victim of the news source narrative. So he hasn’t been listening.

So, when the young guys pulled up a video of Biden saying exactly what they said he said, they played it for the big guy.

And boy, did he look surprised.

Don’t be that big guy.

And just so you know…I’m not a Trump fan. But I’m definitely NOT voting for the morons on the Democratic ticket. So, those two little tidbits of info don’t tell you who I AM voting for. But they DO give you some insight into how wisdom and discernment is implemented.

OK…that’s enough of a political rant for now. And maybe it all means nothing to you. But if you know someone it might help, share this with them. At least if you care about their here and now…and…their eternity.

Don’t be daze and confused.
Don’t be mentally abused.
There’s a way to give yourself the upper hand.
Put some food in your brain,
Food for thought that will sustain
And maintain you as each day you take a stand.

Stay tuned,

Old DNA is an issue. Someone hand me a soft tissue.

Since I’m more known for composing (music), it might seem a little weird for me to talk about decomposing. But here I am talking about it. And I’m guessing that you might already be aware of how your DNA starts decomposing the moment you die. Am I right? Well, it does. And apparently before 1990 almost no one believed DNA could be more than about 10,000 years old. But that was because they only tested things like Egyptian mummies. And then, they started finding really, really old DNA. I’m talking almost immortal DNA.

Old DNA is an issue. Someone hand me a soft tissue.

“Don’t make us guess, Tony. Where’d they find this old DNA?”

OK, you might not believe this. But they started finding it all over the place. Like in a 400,000-year-old bone, 17-million-year-old magnolia leaves, and salt crystals that are millions of years old. And that ain’t all. Little bits of DNA have been found in fish that certain scientists say are 200 million years old. And in dinosaur bones from 80 million years ago. And even in insects and plants caught inside amber they say is up to 120 million years old.

By any standard, that’s old.

But it gets even weirder.

Because living bacteria has been found in rocks that are supposedly up to 650 million years old. Man, talk about probiotics. But I can even beat that number. “Italian scientists have recovered 78 different types of dormant, but living, bacteria in two meteorites that are presumed to be 4.5-billion years old.” And soft tissue has been found in dinosaur bones and even in hadrosaur skin. What?!

C’mon now. If we can just figure out what’s keeping that bacteria alive, and that tissue soft, we might discover the key to immortality.

Or…

Maybe those millions and billions of years are just stupid numbers. And I mean numbers made up by people with a stupid, or at the very least,  a misguided and mislead, agenda. I’m gonna go with the more scientific approach and say all those bones, fossils, and rocks are actually only a few thousand years old.

“Sure Tony. But you’ve got an agenda, too. Because you’re one of those Christians. Right?”

Right.

I DO have an agenda. And it’s to put the Truth back in the search for knowledge. Go where the evidence leads. And if it leads to a Creator God, so much the better. Especially if that Creator God is the living, loving one found in the Bible.

Because the one, true, living, loving God designed me
In His heart is where I know you’ll always find me.
My eternal DNA is in the Truth, the Life, the Way.
And the lies that rule this world will never blind me.

1800 Notes and whatever floats your boats

It feels like I’ve written 1800 notes to my friends. And maybe that’s because this is my 1800th article here on TonyFunderburk.com And, believe it or not, TonyFunderburk.com isn’t my first website, even though it’s 12 1/2 years old. Plus, for a long time, it wasn’t the website I wrote on most of the time. Because it was supposed to be my “artist/musician/performer” site. But things change. And so did I.

1800 Notes and whatever floats your boats

Now my 1800 notes (and counting) are focused on something more than just me.

And that’s a mighty good thing. Because there’s only so much awesomeness to go around.  🙂

But, for those of you who check in regularly…either here or on my The Power of God’s Love Podcast, I have a question. Do you think I write too many articles now? Because starting on January 1, 2020 I began writing a new article (or blog post, whichever you prefer) every day. And a couple of online sites I visit, from time to time, have said that might be too much.

I disagree. Because I’m not just writing to “hear myself talk.”

I mostly write and record information I believe all people need. But I realize, of course, that most people couldn’t care less. And I also know some people would rather writers like me wouldn’t write anything at all. The Truth has that effect.

So, if you have an opinion on it, share it with me in the comments section, below. Or you can email me. Either way, I’d be interested to know what you think. And how you prefer to get content and information from blogs and podcasts you follow.

After all, I don’t wanna wear out my welcome without even knowing I did.

Set a record, increase fame, then go out and lose the game

Think you’re having a bad day? Or week? Or month? Well, how would you like to set a record while the world is watching? But then you go out a few days later and lose, big time, while the world is still watching. Now, that’s a bad day.

Set a record, increase fame, then go out and lose the game

Babe Ruth set a record in a baseball game almost a hundred years ago.

He hit three home runs in one World Series game. And then he went out and lost the World Series a few days later.

To be fair, it’s not usually one guy who loses a ball game or a series. And baseball is a team sport. So, if the whole team isn’t doing what it takes to win a game, one guy’s mistakes don’t necessarily stand out.

But I’m sure Babe Ruth didn’t feel that way about it that year.

Because he and his fellow New York Yankees had battled back to a two games to two tie in the 1926 World Series. And they were down one run in the ninth inning. Mighty Babe stepped up to the plate. And he drew a walk.

So, the tying run was on base…as they say.

But Babe tried to steal second…and he wasn’t exactly a light on his feet kind of guy. So, the second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals was able to tag Babe out And the game and series was over. The Cards had won.

And the loss was all Babe’s fault.

At least, I bet that’s how he felt.

Do you ever feel like that? And do you feel like the weight of the world is all on you? And maybe you also feel like the whole world is watching.

Well, they’re not.

So, maybe you can rest a little easier if I tell you bad stuff happens. To everybody. You’re not singled out. And the game of life isn’t up to you to win.

As a matter of fact…

The game of life is already won
By the One who created us all.
So, play on His team. He wants you there.
We’ll win, and He’ll never let us fall.

Steve Jobs passed away on this October day

Steve Jobs certainly had an interesting life. And a productive one. I don’t think you could find many who would disagree with that. After all, he had quite an impact on how we use technology now. In fact, I know a lot of my readers and listeners might be reading or listening to this on a device Steve helped create.

Steve Jobs passed away on this October day

And on October 5, 2011, Steve Jobs died.

His billions of dollars in net worth couldn’t save him from the devastating effects of pancreatic cancer. And that news is way, way sadder than most people realize.

In case you didn’t know, Steve was adopted. Because his biological parents dealt with some financial and cultural issues, they gave him up for adoption.

And after graduating high school…and not feeling fulfilled by traditional Christianity, Steve studied and accepted Zen Buddhism.

And I can tell you that, out of all the choices and decisions Mr. Jobs ever made, that was his worst.

All of his power struggles of founding, growing, and even losing Apple computers, pale in comparison to the struggle he might be facing now.

And all of Steve’s successes and money mean absolutely nothing to Steve now.

His biographer, Walter Isaacson, said Mr. Jobs “was the greatest business executive of our era, the one most certain to be remembered a century from now. History will place him in the pantheon right next to Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.”

And that might very well be true.

But it means absolutely nothing to Steve now.

Because he might be in his first decade of paying for all his bad choices and decisions. And that first decade is a tiny pinpoint of time compared to how long Steve will be paying.

And I say “might be”because I don’t know what was in Steve’s heart as he lay dying during those last days of his life. I hope he gave his heart to God before he stopped breathing. It would be awesome to see him in Heaven. But according to most accounts, he didn’t make an audible/verbal profession of faith in Jesus.

And Jesus is the only way to get out of spending eternity attempting to pay for all your bad choices and decisions.

Of course, that sounds like a cruel and uncaring thing to say. At least it does to everyone who rejects Jesus. But if I say Jesus is the only Way to eternal life, and I’m right, then all other religions must be wrong.

He is. And they are.

But if I share that information, and I’m wrong, then none of this matters anyway.

So…

I recommend you prove the Bible wrong.
But know that many others tried and failed.
You only get a little while to try
‘Cause when you die salvation will have sailed.

Sputnik was the first in space, but we still won the race

It was only 22 inches around. And it only weighed 184 pounds. But it might as well have been a lead weight the size of Pluto. Because the news and reports of it fell on America like a lead weight. And it had the cutest, little name. Sputnik.

Sputnik was the first in space, but we still won the race

On this day, October 4, back in 1957, Russian launched Sputnik into space.

It zoomed around the Earth at about 18000 miles per hour. So, it made a full circle just about every hour and a half.

And the little satellite/rocket ship was close enough to Earth that its beeping could be picked up by amateur radio operators all across America.

And back then a satellite or rocket orbiting around the world was a new thing. So, people everywhere were tuned in and curious.

It only took about three months for Sputnik to run out of steam. And it fell out of orbit and burned up in the atmosphere. But not before it ignited a fire under the seats of those in charge here in America.

And the space race was ON.

Russia (aka The Soviet Union) beat us to “the punch”on several aspects of the space race. They were the first to put a man in space. And the first to put a woman in space. And they were first with a space walk. (No, not Moonwalk, you Michael Jackson groupies)

But America stole the spotlight when we were the first to put a man on the moon. And as Neil Armstrong said, it was “one small step for man…one giant leap for mankind.”(Remind me to share an interesting story I have about Neil.)

And we’ve been establishing colonies of millions of people on the moon ever since.

Yeah, just checkin’ to see if you’re awake.

So, how does all this space race and moon talk benefit us Earthlings?

Well, if you go by most of the reasons why scientists do what they do, the moon landing and all other space travel is a huge waste of time and resources.

But when scientists are willing to look at some critical evidence, it can mean a lot. And I’m talking about evidence that’s been staring down at them from the face of the man in the moon.

Like…why is the near side of the moon so much more beat up than the far side? Hmm…just puttin’ it out there. And why isn’t there a lot more moon dust on such an old (billions of years old, so the lies…er story…goes) satellite planet?

Hey, don’t shoot me. I’m only the piano player. And I’m just askin’.

OK. I’ll stop for now. But I’ll leave you with this one last thought…

Why should we race to space
With a smile upon our face,
When there’s plenty, here on Earth, we still can do?
Maybe I’m wastin’ time
With this silly rocket rhyme.
Or maybe it might launch some questions, too.

Nordic country bravery saves some from awful slavery

Denmark, by most standards these days, is a left-leaning country and government. At least if news articles I’ve read can be trusted. So, it might come as a surprise to you how this little Nordic country stood up for the Jews, during World War II, better than almost any other country.

Play

Get The The Power of God's Love Podcast Delivered to Your Device Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | Android | Pandora | iHeartRadio | Podchaser | Podcast Index | TuneIn | Deezer | RSS | More

Why would a Nordic country protect Jews?

Well, to start with, for some unknown reason (some say it was for Nazi propaganda purposes) the Nazis sort of left the Danes alone and didn’t arrest Danish Jews. (Maybe they knew how much they’d miss the pastries.)

But all good things must come to an end. Right? And sometime in 1943 Germany began to view Denmark as a thorn in their side…so to speak. They also started to figure that Denmark could be a jumping off point for the Allied forces.

So Hitler decided to put the hammer down on Denmark. But fortunately, a guy named Georg F. Duckwitz…who was up in the Nazi ranks…was able to warn the Danish government. And he let them know how Hitler planned to capture all the Jews in Denmark and send them to concentration camps.

And that’s where it gets interesting.

Denmark didn’t just bow down to Hitler. In fact, they refused to hand over their Jewish citizens. And they said it was because those Jews were Danish citizens.

Not only that, but get this. Denmarks political leaders even encouraged Danes to hide and protect Jews.

What?!

Like I asked before, why would a Nordic country do that?

Was it because of some sort of economic advantage to Denmark? Or was it because it was an election year…and politicians didn’t wanna look bad?

Nope.

Ironically, those Jews had Jesus to thank.

At least, indirectly.

Because Lutheran bishops issued a statement reminding Danes that Jesus was a Jew. And they said to remember how “love your neighbor as yourself“applies to Jews, too. They also mentioned how freedom is worth the risk of life.

And then they reminded their congregations of something so uncompromisingly crucial to keep in mind. That it’s better to obey God rather than man.

So, on this day, October 3, in 1943, a Lutheran pastor named Kjeldgaard Jensen, read the bishops’ letter, asking to protect Jews, to his congregation.

And the little town hid Jews, raised money to have them ferried to safety in other countries, and risked their lives in other ways to protect their Jewish neighbors.

Countless other Danish citizens hid Jews, too. And got them to safer places. And even though many Danes and Jews still lost their lives in those heroic efforts, many more were saved from the cruelties of Hitler and his thugs.

There were plenty of other stories of courage, too.

And because Denmark defied Hitler, ninety-five percent of its Jewish neighbors survived the holocaust. Now, that’s nothing short of amazing. Especially considering what sort of government exists in Denmark today.

But it goes to show how doing what’s right
Is essential to those who are salt and light.

October 2 is still the day they wrote the bill.

Well, it’s October 2, 2020. And I can hardly believe it’s already been a day since I wrote about how it’s hard to believe it’s already October. Uh-oh, I’m spinning in circles of numbers. Somebody stop me before I fall off this merry-go-round.

October 2 is still the day they wrote the bill.

But seriously (rimshot) October 2 is pretty darn significant.

At least if you’re proud to be an American (cue the Lee Greenwood song).

See if any of these words sound familiar or mean anything to you…

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

And how about this…

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Yeah, if you’re an American…at least one who’s at least somewhat informed, you know those are two of the ten rights included in that famous collection known as the Bill of Rights. And it was ratified on October 2, 1789.

There are 8 other rights.

But something to keep in mind way more than how the newly formed American government came up with a Bill of Rights is how real rights come from God.

And your real rights are given to you by God because He loves you and wants you to have life and have it more abundantly.

Government documents, even the ones based on Christian principles, won’t share that information with you. But there IS a source you can go to for all that pertains to abundant life. And you don’t have to go any further than your smartphone.

The Bible is a book full of life and love and truth.
And, in a way, it’s sort of like a fountain of youth.
Because it has the key to life where you’ll never die.
It’s found in your Creator and His sweet by and by.

October is here - Let's get it in gear

Well, well. October is here. And it seems like only yesterday everybody was saying “Can you believe it’s already 2020?”Time flies when you keep having that daily java jam.

October is here - Let's get it in gear

So, since October is here, you know what that means.

Yeah, the yard ornaments for Halloween 🎃 are gonna start poppin’ up. In fact, we’ve already seen lots of them on our neighborhood walks. And that’s OK. Because it’s just a silly holiday. I mean, it’s not like it’s a way of life or anything.

Right?

Huh? It is?!

Yeah, lots of people get into Halloween more than Christmas now. But that shouldn’t come as any surprise. At least…not to anyone who pays attention to human nature. And current events.

Speaking of current events…I can just see it now. Kids getting dressed up in their Halloween costumes. And parents getting ready to take them through the neighborhoods (because it’s not safe to let them go alone anymore).

And then…

Everybody gets their other mask on. And things get really scary. Because all the ghouls and goblins, all the monsters and mad scientists, all the witches and warlocks will have to add those socially responsible masks. Right?

“Oh, Tony. You’re such a cynical Sam.”

Yeah, that Sam I am. That Sam I am.

A lot of people my age talk about the “good ol’ days”when kids could go trick or treating without adult supervision. (not the tiny kids of course) And they talk about those good ol’ days that way because they actually were good ol’ days.

Even costumes were less evil looking.

Maybe I’m just remembering it all through orange and black glasses. But it would be nice to be able to talk about Halloween without having to think about all the dreadful, dark deeds that’ll happen.

But they WILL happen. Because humans prefer darkness because of the darkness in their own hearts.

I hope that doesn’t describe you.

October is here and I hope that only means
You’ll be picking out a sweater to go with your jeans.
And I hope every day of the month brings you near
To the one and only reason any one of us are here.

Opinions on debate might tend to agitate

As I was doing an early morning Google search, I noticed something interesting in the “suggestions” dropdown. My search started with the letter O. And one of the suggestions was “opinions on debate.” So, of course, my first thought was, “Who’s debating?” Seems like the natural first response. Right?

Opinions on debate might tend to agitate

Turns out the phrase, opinions on debate, led to a presidential election debate.

What?! Would you believe there was an actual debate between presidential candidates last night?

And from some of the opinions I’ve read on a couple of social media channels, it wasn’t much of a debate. Apparently it was more like one guy giving answers and information while two other people asked questions and interrupted the answers.

But, like I said, that’s according to what I read. Because I didn’t watch the debate.

Because election debates, these days, and most other kinds of debates for that matter, are mostly a way to move carbon dioxide around a room. I like a definition I read years ago. A debate typically is thesis versus antithesis. And that equals synthesis…or, no problem solved.

Another way to look at it is: Point versus Counterpoint which equals “what’s the point?”

Still no problem solved.

The irony of what goes on in presidential election debates is how so many in the media think our political parties are so polarized. And if only that were true.

“True?! You mean you want the political parties to be polarized and not get along, Tony?”

Yes. I’d love that. At least if the polarization highlighted the difference between right and wrong. Good and evil. Life and death. But our two main political parties are so similar, these days, it’s basically impossible to say it’s good guys versus bad guys.

Debates are no longer about right and wrong.

Now they simply showcase how much each candidate is willing to steal from hard-working citizens to pay for social programs. And, not so coincidentally, that’s called socialism, which has been in place, here in America, for decades. And just because your candidate has an R or a D after his name doesn’t make that right. It will always be wrong regardless of dollar amounts.

So, as you can see, I have opinions on the debate even though I didn’t watch it.

But just because I didn’t watch it doesn’t mean what I say isn’t true. It is true.

And the sooner people wake up, the better.
Because when you follow laws to the letter,
They’ll transform you to an unwilling debtor
Who then turns into an aiding abettor.

Mac Davis did this thing I thought was worth repeating

I’ve shared the story of my humble beginnings, in the spotlight, before. And you should go read that. It’s hilarious. My glamorous debut at Dinkledorf’s Deli in Kansas City. But one detail I left out in that recollection was how I wrote songs on the spot. And I thought about that again, today, when I saw news about Mac Davis on social media.

Mac Davis did this thing I thought was worth repeating

“What’s Mac Davis got to do with your musical debut, Tony?”

I’ll answer that in a minute. But first, I saw Mac just had heart surgery. And his family says he’s “critically ill following heart surgery in Nashville.” I don’t personally know him, but I do remember several of his songs.

Mac got started as a songwriter back in 1969. And he wrote some hit songs for a rather obscure singer from back then…Elvis Presley. But Mac also had several hit songs as a singer and performer. And he even had his own TV show for a little while.

And it was something he did on his TV show that stuck with me.

He had a little improv section in his show where he’d ask his audience to give him some words or an idea for a song title. And when they gave him something he could work with, he composed a song on the spot. Most of the time it ended up being pretty funny. But it was always a hit with his audience.

And when I made my debut at Dinkledorf’s Deli, I used that idea as part of my show.

It was only a two night booking. And I only performed Tony Funderburk songs. So, only family and friends truly appreciated my repertoire. But the whole audience got a kick out of me taking their suggestions and composing songs on the spot. If only smartphones had been invented back then. Who knows? Maybe I’d have a wacky recording to share. But unfortunately there’s no recording.

But this story shows one of the many ways we humans are connected.

And it’s such a shame there are so many people out there who prefer to destroy those connections. That’s not the right road to go down. And it only leads to heartache, at best, and wars and worst.

Wow, now I’ve started talking about wars. And that’s after starting a conversation about Mac Davis. Don’t try this kind of writing at home kids. Leave it to those select few of us who are the experts. “Oh Lord, It’s Hard to Be Humble.”

Music and heart rate - I'm talkin' to you mate.

I remember, from back in 1983, a catchy song by a new wave band, The Fixx. And it popped into my head as I started putting my thoughts together for this article. “One Thing Leads To Another.” If you’re old enough to remember that song, I’ll bet it’s in your head now. Right? But I bring it up because of some things I read about music and heart rate.

And I read about music and heart rate because of my own heart.

My nearly 3 year long ordeal with sinus and lung problems has left me breathless a lot of times. And I don’t mean that in the charming, romantic way. No, I mean literally breathless. Or at least the feeling that I’d lose my breath. And, of course, there’s a lot of stress involved when you feel like you can’t get enough air.

So, to offset that breathing issue, my doctor prescribed a rescue inhaler and Advair. Those are steroids. Corticosteroids, to be more exact, and they’re supposed to help reduce inflammation in your lungs. But the trouble is, they can also increase your heart rate. And that happened to me.

When your heart races at about 140 beats per minute, it can be pretty stressful.

First thing I did was wean myself off the Advair, which is the stronger of the two inhalers. Then, I added a magnesium taurate supplement to my daily regimen.  And I felt considerable improvement in the steadiness of my heart rate.

But I kept using the rescue inhaler. Because there are times when the airways into my lungs feel like they’re gonna close down completely. It’s probably more of a feeling than a reality. But the feeling is strong. So, I hit the inhaler.

And sure enough, during this past week, I found I was using the rescue inhaler more often. Because those breathing shutdown feelings were happening more often. And let me tell you…it’s no fun waking up in the middle of the night with a feeling that you can’t catch your breath.

When you can’t breathe right, your heart rate increases. And then you gotta do or take something to help that. And like the song says, One Thing Leads To Another…and back again.

So, in the wee hours, this morning…

I brewed myself some coffee, a natural bronchodilator. Then, I opened my bottle of peppermint essential oil, got a little on my index finger, and tapped it onto my mustache. And between the coffee and peppermint, I’m able to open my airways at least enough to hold off on the rescue inhaler.

So, I’m able to breathe well enough and relax enough to look up more ways to keep my heart rate in control.

And wouldn’t you know it…and it makes total sense to me…music can be good heartbeat medicine.

I found one article that even laid out a BPM (beats per minute) regimen for the day. It said to start your day with music around the 120 BPM mark. And that should be easy. Because many pop songs are in that rhythmic range.

Then, let’s say you walk to work. 120 BPM is good for that, too. And if you have to deal with a steep hill or strong headwind, you might kick it up to 160 BPM.

And if you work inside, maybe a little more mental than physical, instrumental music in the 50-80 BPM range should keep you focused and productive.

Then, if you’re one of those motivated people who fits in a workout during the day, the recommendation is more upbeat music. So, look for songs in the 120-160 BPM range. You can think of it this way. More beats means more times you move your arms and legs.

And the article I read even recommended music in the 120 BPM range for when you eat. Apparently faster music tends to make you eat too fast. Go figure. And it’s a good idea to find music that matches the meal. (Way back in 2015, I talked about how businesses mess this up.)

When you want to (or need to) slow things down and reduce stress, find music in the 50-80 BPM range. And make it instrumental music so your brain can focus on your body’s needs instead of lyrics.

Finally, they say you can actually get stress-free sleep by listening to instrumental music around 60 BPM. And that’s like listening to the tic-toc on a watch. One beat per second.

A good rhythm for your heart.

Now, you might think, since I’m a lifelong musician, I’d already be following this regimen. But you’d be wrong. I don’t follow it. And I never have. But not for any particular reason other than…I just never have.

Too be upfront about it…I probably still won’t follow this regimen. Not because I disagree with it. But because my musical self would tend to focus on the music more than whatever I’m working on. And that’s why, unlike many other writers, I don’t tend to listen to music when I write.

So…there you go. A great little music and heart rate regimen for your health. And an upfront admission that it falls into the category of “do as I say, not as I do.”

Every beat of my heart is important.
And every breath that I take is too.
So, I need to be sure it’s all working.
And I recommend the same for you.

Stay tuned,

Sing a new song and hope others sing along

I can sing a new song any time I feel like it. And I mean a song nobody’s ever heard before. Because I can write that new song. And I know it won’t be music set in place since before the foundation of the world. It’ll be brand new at the time I write it.

Sing a new song and hope others sing along

And when I sing a new song I just wrote, it highlights my will.

Not necessarily God’s will. Because a lot of music, especially these days, is anti God. And many popular songs are full of despicable thoughts and words. Profanity, dark deviant behavior, and of course plenty of sex references. So, those songs highlight the songwriter’s will. They are a window to the songwriter’s soul.

But they are in no way connected to God.

And I prefer to write music that helps me connect my will to God’s will. So, as a result, many of my songs talk about Him and Biblical principles. And I know my music will never be popular in this world. But that’s OK with me as long as it’s pleasing to God. And as long as it shows how awesome He is.

Then, maybe it’ll be like the compliment a guy paid to me at a pro life event several years ago. He came up to the stage, after the event was over and I was packing up. And he said, “Tony, those were awesome songs. I’m sure they’ll be echoing down the halls of Heaven.”

I don’t know if they will. But it would be my eternal honor if they did. Because it’s my goal to store up my treasures in Heaven. And I’d love it if my songs are part of those treasures.

OK…maybe this makes sense to you. And maybe it doesn’t. Either way, I felt compelled to share how you and I are responsible for what we do. God didn’t write my songs for me, eons ago, and deliver them to me. And He’s not controlling my time in the recording studio. So, the blame or the credit for what I write go to me.

But the glory of the gift of music all goes to God.

God inspires me to write,
And I hope I get it right.
But I know the end result will be all mine.
And I know it will be
His creation straight from me.
I can write and sing a new song by design.

The sins of my youth and mercy and truth

I’ve been doing this series of posts based on reading the Psalms. And in case you don’t know, Psalms is one of the sections of the Old Testament in the Bible. I’m up to Psalm 25. And when King David mentioned “the sins of my youth,”I thought, “Wow, I can relate.”

The sins of my youth and mercy and truth

Not only the sins of my youth are forgiven.

Thank God for how loving and thorough He is. Because He didn’t just have mercy on us for our youthful indiscretions. No, He knows our sins don’t stop just because we become adults.

In fact, the sins of our youth often pale in comparison to what we do later on.

Yeah, you could almost understand a teenager’s stupidity. Because teenagers are dealing with a little bit of knowledge combined with a lot of raging hormones. And that’s like a molotov cocktail of sin.

But more mature adults don’t have the hormonal excuse. Before you take exception, because you know adults deal with hormonal imbalances, I’m talking about the hormones that lead to unexpected pregnancies, etc. Not just hot flashes and headaches.

Anyway…

Back to Psalm 25. I love how David balances his guilt with God’s mercy. And David even remembers his people, Israel. So, his prayer…his plea for deliverance and forgiveness…doesn’t have a selfish perspective.

And it’s so easy to fall into that selfish mode, isn’t it?

But it’s not entirely selfish to pray for God’s mercy on you. And the Bible even says, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”So, you should love yourself. Not in the typical, worldly way. You know, “what have you done for me lately?”

But love yourself, as you pray, by asking God to give you wisdom and understanding. And ask Him to help you to help others. So your “selfish”prayer becomes a message of love. And you can bet that message will reach God.

From your mouth to God’s ears,
As you overcome fears,
And deliverance fills up your heart,
Feel the sins of your youth
Melt away in God’s Truth.
Perfect love is the state of His art.

Inside my head and this lyrical thread

I woke up in the middle of the night, as usual. And while I was still halfway between a dream and awake I heard my own lyrics inside my head. But not just lyrics I’ve already written. No, I also heard rewrites. New words and phrases to replace certain ones in the song. So, I closed my eyes, fell asleep, and moved on.

Play

Get The The Power of God's Love Podcast Delivered to Your Device Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | Android | Pandora | iHeartRadio | Podchaser | Podcast Index | TuneIn | Deezer | RSS | More

No, I didn’t move on. I listened to the new lyrics inside my head.

And they made sense. The new lyrics fit the song better than the original ones. And I enjoyed the updated message. But even more than that…I enjoyed the process. Because it felt like I was collaborating with myself. Or was it me?

Hmm…

So far, this might all sound like egocentric babbling. But there’s an important truth, going on here, I’d like you to consider.

A materialistic worldview says everything that exists is made up of nothing but matter and energy. But it’s a self-refuting position. Because the thoughts behind that statement are non-material…non-physical.

And that’s good news.

Unless your whole philosophy in life relies on the absence of a Creator God.

Then, non-physical information becomes a thorn in your side. A stumbling block you can’t move out of the way with more anti God rhetoric. And the sad news is, the opponents of God don’t care about evidence. So, their agenda is clear.

Mock and ridicule Christians for believing in “someone or something invisible in the sky.”Which, of course, we don’t do. But they don’t care about our intellectualism and scientific knowledge. Only that we believe in the God who is the ultimate standard of right and wrong.

Whew! I didn’t realize I had some steam to let off.

And it’s only 4 a.m. I can only imagine what this new day will bring.

But I know it will be awesome and so lyrical
‘Cause this life we all live is a such a miracle.
And if you choose to be doubtful and satirical,
One sad day you’ll find my faith is quite empirical.

Manliest man with a Love Plan

“Why do you write so much about love, Tony? It’s not exactly a manly topic.” Yeah, I’ve been asked that. And when I hear a question like that, I immediately think, “Hmm…sounds like somebody who hasn’t read the Bible.” Because the manliest man who ever lived talked about love. And I mean, talked about it a lot.

Manliest man with a Love Plan

And before I go any further, the manliest man who ever lived never made an action movie.

Or a superhero movie. And he never got any TV series offers. And he never entered any of those ironman competitions or long-distance running marathons.

Plus, there are no records of him ever starting any core workout classes. And he didn’t have any nutritional or health and wellness endorsements. But there’s not a shred of doubt that no man before or since was or is manlier. Because no man, before or since, endured or ever will endure the incredible torture this man had to endure.

“Uh-oh, honey. I think I see where Tony’s going with this.”

Yeah, this manliest of men I’m talking about…who talked a lot about love…just so happened to be your Creator.

And even if you don’t believe in Him, or trust Him, or love Him, He laid down His life for you. The only eternal, sinless, perfect life that’s worthy enough to pay off your mountain of debt. And mine, too.

He even said it like this, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”

In this time in history, when so many would rather murder than lay down their life for a friend, that’s quite a contrast.

So, before you lose the love that saves your life,
And before you turn your back on your Creator,
Look into the evidence that’s all around you.
Do it now because it might be too late, later.

Drums and percussion and a rockin' discussion

Back in my early teens I started my lifelong love affair with drums and percussion. And I remember getting a cool, metal flake blue, snare drum for Christmas. It came with instructions on how to do paradiddles, flams, rolls, and more. And I was hooked. Drumbeats have been playing in my head ever since.

Drums and percussion and a rockin' discussion

As I took to drums and percussion my brother was mastering guitar.

Of course, it’s every parent’s most fervent dream to have sons learn rock guitar and drums and play loud music. Right? I mean what mom or dad hasn’t said, “I can’t wait for junior to plug into an amp and start rockin.”

Yeah, I’m being a little facetious. And the whole rock music “thing”was not exactly an acceptable “part of growing up”in my Dad’s house. So, my brother and I weren’t encouraged to give it our best. In fact, you might say we were rebelling if and when we played any top 40 music.

So, we practiced our instruments on the music we liked only when there were no adults around. And when they were around, we’d play music they liked to hear.

Good strategy, right?

But there was nowhere for me to set up a complete set of drums. So, I did all my practicing on my little snare.

But one summer, while my brother and I were visiting my mom, my uncle (who’s only a couple of years older than me) also visited. And he brought his whole set of drums with him.

I’ll never forget. Red metal flake with chrome rims.

Snare, two ride toms, floor tom, ride cymbal, crash cymbal, hi-hat, and kick. The full flash and sparkle.

And the best part? My uncle left after a couple of weeks. But he left his drums at my Mom’s house. And I got to play them the whole summer!

By that time, my brother had saved up and bought an electric guitar and amp. So, we’d practice, up in the bedroom, we shared with our other brother, in that Kansas country house.

Side note: it was an old house with no air conditioning. So, to say our practice sessions were warm is putting it mildly.

But we played anytime we could. And that mostly meant when no adults were around. My Mom didn’t discourage us from practicing. She just didn’t want to be around when we did. (Looking back on it now, maybe it wasn’t just volume.)

And I remember one song, in particular, my brother and I would play over and over. “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)”by Grand Funk Railroad. We didn’t have mics and a sound system. So, we’d just sing as loud as we could. And I loved playing all the triplets as I made the round trip through the drum kit.

It was a blast. And a memory I enjoy re-playing in my mind.

As time went on, I discovered even more joy and wonder in the magical power of a piano keyboard. And I also discovered how more people were willing to listen to me play a keyboard than the drums and percussion. Go figure.

Another side note: The lead singer for Grand Funk Railroad, Mark Farner, became a Christian sometime after his rock-n-roll fame. So, he now understands who the True Captain is…and how, every day, we’re a little “Closer to Home.”

Keepin’ the beat of a Heavenly song,
Tappin’ my fingers and hummin’ along,
Lovin’ the rhythm and lovin’ the rhyme
And lovin’ the One who paid for this time.

Social media anxiety is a whole nother variety

I just watched an interesting video about social media anxiety. And the guy shared some disturbing statistics about how toxic social media can be. But, of course, none of his information matters to you and me. Right?

Social media anxiety is a whole nother variety

Wrong. Social media anxiety isn’t contained to certain areas.

And you can see signs and results of it all around America (and the world) right now. And way too many of those results include murder and other violence.

“Oh now, Tony. How can you say all that stuff is because of social media?”

I didn’t say it ALL is. But you can see a steady decline in social behavior since different channels were invented and put online.

Ironic, isn’t it? How so many people have lost their social skills, including good ol’ fashioned manners, in this day and age of huge social media channels.

But according to the guy in the video I just watched about it, the reason should be as plain as the nose on your face. And that reason is because those big platforms were built mostly by nerdy, anti-social, hermits. All males, too.

I don’t know how true that is. But I’ve seen pictures of a lot of those guys. And they definitely fit the profile of pasty-faced nerds with little to know social skills.

But as long as millions and even billions of adults are enjoying all that online interaction…who cares? Right? After all, it doesn’t hurt anybody. And the channels are great ways to keep people connected.

Well, if you love your neighbor as yourself, you should care.

Because some of your neighbors are using social media in cruel, despicable, vicious, and wicked ways. Foul language. Hateful rhetoric. And recipients of all that self-loathing talk sometimes don’t deal with it very well.

And that falls under the category of everybody doing what they “feel”is right. Saying things like, “Hey, if it’s right for me, who are you to tell me it’s wrong?”

Yeah, when everybody is doing what is “right in their own eyes right in their own eyes,”the lines between right and wrong are blurred. And nowhere do they get blurrier than on social media. So, watch for the anxiety to increase.

But what do I know?
I’m just a Christian guy
Who worships an invisible
Man in the sky.
Well, if that is true,
Then just go ahead
And do what you want
Before you’re dead.
But if I end up right,
And I will, you’ll see,
Then you will forever
Live in anxiety.

Stay tuned,

Americana music and a most unlikely English band

When I first began to chart a course around a piano keyboard, there was a particular singer songwriter I listened to every spare minute I had. And it sort of started with a high school graduation gift…an album. And that lead to me buying more albums from the same singer songwriter. One of those albums was a collection of Americana music. But not your typical songs. And certainly not from someone you’d ever guess would play that kind of music.

Americana music and a most unlikely English band

This collection of Americana music was called “Tumbleweed Connection.”

And I already see the hands shooting into the air.

“Ooh, ooh, Tony. I know who it is. It’s Elton John. Right?”

Yeah. It’s Elton John. Americana music maestro.

“No, Tony,”you say. “He’s a British pop star.”

I won’t deny that. Elton John became a huge worldwide success. And not because of his Tumbleweed Connection style. No, his success came as a result of his versatile, ear-catching songwriting abilities. Well, his and Bernie Taupin’s. Bernie wrote the lyrics. And those lyrics might have played an even bigger part in Elton John’s success than the music.

But I’m probably too biased when it comes to lyrics.

Anyway…

If you’ve never heard the songs on Tumbleweed Connection, I recommend checking them out on YouTube. You can listen to the whole album there, free. And you’ll hear “country”sounding songs that outshine Nashville. Truly.

Steel guitars. Harmonicas. Acoustic guitars. And mighty nice vocal harmonies. The songs on this album definitely have that down home, nostalgic feel. And remember, this is all coming from some guys who were raised in England.

I’m writing about this because I listened to those songs a couple of nights ago.

And it took me back to those days and put a smile on my face.

But it also made me sad.

Because, back then, Elton John was, by far, my favorite singer songwriter. And he inspired me to figure out my way around a piano. And that lead to me writing songs, covering songs, and getting paid to play and sing.

But then…Elton decided to embrace and exhibit his homosexuality.

I remember some friends telling me he was “a homo.”And I didn’t believe them. But I soon found out they were right.

And I care too much about Elton’s eternal soul to simply accept and “tolerate”his perversion. What Elton fails to acknowledge is how he wouldn’t have even a molecule of his fame if not for God. And all Elton’s fame and fortune will eventually fade into flames. But his soul will go on.

And his soul will be in only one of two places.

So far, it doesn’t look good for Elton. He’s even gone so far as to live a life that mocks the institution of marriage. And he and his “partner”are even raising a couple of kids in a household that will drastically fail those kids.

I hope and pray Elton (aka Reginald Dwight) makes a connection with his Creator before it’s too late.

But so far, it looks like he’ll be an eternally tormented tumbleweed.

Temporary choices can last forever.
Decisions and ideas have consequences.
So, be aware your future’s in your own hands.
And choose before your afterlife commences.

Stay tuned,

Don't go away mad. Go away glad.

I know you’ve heard it. Or maybe you’ve said it yourself. “Don’t go away mad. Just go away.”And, if you say it because you wanna get on someone’s nerves, it almost always works like a charm. But here’s why I bring it up…

Don't go away mad. Go away glad.

Back in the 90’s I heard a song called “Don’t Go Away Mad”

And it was a mild hit for a so-called “supergroup”known as Little Village. The band included Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, and Jim Keltner. If you don’t know those names, they’re famous songwriters. Well, at least famous in songwriter circles anyway. But they’re each highly respected and regarded by their peers.

So, as things sometimes happen, these guys decided to put their musical heads together, think up a band name, write some songs, and record an album.

Once I heard “Don’t Go Away Mad”I wanted to see what else this supergroup of songwriters had come up with. And I bought the CD and listened to it on my drives from between bookings. That was back in my full time road warrior days.

There are a few enjoyable songs in the Little Village collection. And there are a couple of duds, too. No big deal. It happens to the best of us. Even supergroups apparently. But I like the Americana feel to the album. And the instrumentation agrees with my musical taste buds.

Do I recommend spending money on it? Not really. Especially when you can check out some of their stuff on YouTube for free. And if you do, be sure to look for and listen to “Take Another Look”- “Do You Want My Job”- and “Don’t Bug Me When I’m Workin”

“So, you’re doin’ album reviews now, Tony?”

No. All this road warrior reminiscing actually came up in my head as I read a few verses in Acts (in the Bible) about Paul. Yeah, the inner workings of my mind are wonders to behold. But maybe it’ll make sense when you know which section I’m talking about.

Paul had been wrongly imprisoned. And he made a “miraculous”prison escape. But instead of trying to capture him and throw him back in chains, the magistrates in charge wanted to send him, quietly, on his way. And Paul wouldn’t go quietly.

It’s a cool and interesting story. You should read it. You can here.

OK, I’ll leave you with that. Until next time…

Don’t go away mad, go away glad.
Don’t silently sing. Let your voice ring.
And don’t listen to lies. Roll up your eyes,
Look to the skies, and let your soul rise.

Stay tuned,
