Bodily exercise helps a little bit. I don't recommend depending on it.

A wise man once wrote “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.”

Yeah, no amount of bodily exercise can prepare you for that which is to come.

But the good news is that which is to come is WAY better than the best shape you’ll ever be in here on earth. And that’s mainly because the future is forever, but the here and now is SO temporary. When I say temporary, I mean, you’re gonna be thinking blink-of-an-eye warp speed when your life is over.

The events that have taken place, for me, in the past few weeks, have vividly driven home these facts. Even though I was already keenly aware that my life, here on earth, is most likely around 3/4 complete. Thankfully, I’m also keenly aware of the hope I have because of my faith in my Creator. And I have that faith because He actually wrote a book, the best selling book of all time, and included eternal promises to those who choose to love and trust Him. So, I can just read his book and enjoy the blessed comfort of His…

Abounding Grace

If this was the last day of my life…
If this was the last sunrise I’d see…
I’d still thank the Lord for my days
And His abounding Grace to me.

If this was the last thing I could write…
If this was my final poetry…
I’d still thank the Lord for His word
And His abounding Grace to me.

If this was the last time I could pray…
If this had to be my closing plea…
I know I could say, “I love the Lord
And His abounding Grace to me.”

Rainbow high up in the sky and the reason why

“They” used to say, “Man, I’m on such a high right now,” when something made you big-time happy. And some said that when they inhaled certain kinds of smoke. But let’s not go there. The reason I brought it up is to talk about a rainbow high.

And the rainbow high comes from an actual rainbow.

Not just some bright colors in an arch, or on a flag, or painted across a unicorn. No, I’m talkin’ about the beautiful colors you see after it rains and the sun shines on the water high in the sky. Yeah, a real, refracted light rainbow.

I remember, back in the 80’s, when I enjoyed seeing rainbows almost every afternoon from the patio of my apartment in Lakewood, Colorado. There were so many that I wrote a political song called “Rainbow City.”

Anyway…

There’s a large group of people who’ve done their unbalanced best to steal the meaning of the rainbow. They’ve tried to adopt it to their lifestyle choices, which contradict what God says.

Speaking of God, He invented light and colors, in case you didn’t know, but I’m sure you do. And He’s the one who said it’s a sign of His pledge with every creature on the Earth.

That’s why I wrote this short story and poem a few years ago.

Rainbow riders are very special people. In the first place, they wear special boots that help them jump real high into the sky. Then they can jump on a brand new rainbow and ride it all the way around the world. And rainbow riders love to eat colorful fruits and berries. They fill their plates with cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, honeydew, and pineapple. They know if they eat plenty of fruit they’ll be able to jump higher and ride away into the sunset.

Now, if you just sit back and close your eyes and look real hard, you might just see some of those rainbow riders riding rainbows behind your eyelids.

Now, THAT’S what I call a rainbow high.

And if you really focus, you might be able to jump up and join the…

Rainbow Riders

Riding on a rainbow after all the raindrops fell…
Little rainbow riders didn’t hear the dinner bell…
So they kept on riding through the sky above the clouds…
High above the weather and away from all the crowds.

They could see the sailing ships and fishes in the sea…
They could see the pyramids and lands of mystery…
All the world was like a book with video and sound…
And they could turn the pages just by going ’round and ’round.

Little rainbow riders ride the rainbows till they fade…
Then they land on earth and have a picnic in the shade…
They fill their bowls with berries and juicy melons too…
And fall asleep and dream of riding rainbows through the blue.  © 2013

The Earth remains and the fool complains

Fires burn down beautiful places. Volcanoes erupt and destroy communities. Hurricanes blast entire cities. Tornadoes uproot even the heartiest of trees. Mudslides annihilate peaceful homes that were minding their own business. And through it all the Earth remains.

Yeah, the Earth remains through this blistering hot summer.

And it’ll remain through this coming cold winter.

So, you can fear what might happen, if you wanna. But I’m just not gonna join you in that whole fear thing. For one, it’s totally counter-productive. And, oh yeah, God says “fear not.” And “worry not.”

A few years ago I shared this about that:

Fact is…when you believe and trust in God, He gives you a spirit of power. And love. And a sound mind. That’s a mind based on reason, sense, or judgment. Full of competence and security. When you feel the opposite of that description, you’ve moved away from, or you’ve forgotten what God says about you.

But that doesn’t mean you’re doomed. If it did, you and I and everybody else would be doomed. Don’t throw your hands up in despair or frustration. Instead, turn around and ask God for more wisdom. He loves to give it to those who love Him.

And remember His promise about this planet we call home. “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease.” Only the fool complains about it.

Get Wise

Don’t drink the wine of violence
Or eat the bread of hate.
You might just get away with it.
Can you afford to wait?

Don’t push and shove the simple.
Seek knowledge just like gold.
And in so doing you’ll lay up
Your treasures manifold.

A word to the confounded”
Pour light into your eyes.
If you expect more than neglect,
Get wisdom; yeah get wise.

Get wise to the deceiver.
Don’t harken to his lies.
Keep commanding understanding.
Get wisdom; yeah get wise.

Don’t walk, you, with the wicked.
Beware the scornful tongue.
Let never part your loving heart
And live forever young.

The morning sun will shine and I'll write another line.

Remind me to tell you my thoughts on human sovereignty one of these days. I’ve got an interesting perspective on it. But that’s not what I’m sharing with you today. Something else occurred to me, today, as I saw the morning sun start to glow on the tops of the trees.

It occurred to me that the morning sun will shine again tomorrow.

And the next day. And the next. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Those et ceteras always sound best in groups of three.

But here’s the thing. The world, and by the world I mean everyone who believes life on planet Earth is all there is, says the sun might not shine tomorrow. Yeah, the world (those hopeless souls who want you just as hopeless as they are) is FILLED with darkness. Because it reflects the darkness in their hearts.

But anyone who tells you the sun isn’t gonna shine tomorrow (or someday soon) is either a liar or an ignorant fool. And I don’t care how many dystopian movies and TV shows there are. The people (and I use that description loosely) who produce them are totally clueless.

Of course, they’d tell you it’s ME who’s clueless. And they DO say it all the time. Not specifically about me. Just anyone who’d dare to trust God and remain optimistic in these dark times.

But give me optimism and real Truth.

Any day of the week. And twice on Sunday. Because I prefer to move forward through life with the knowledge that it goes on forever. Not in the same body. No, I DO have to trade in this used, broken-down body on a brand new one. But it’s with the knowledge that the new one is paid for.

And I know the whole world, even if every nation bundled into some sort of “new” orderly fashion, couldn’t keep the sun from shining. Not even if it employed billions of robots with artificial intelligence. And not even if it could focus all the planet’s energy into a giant ray gun aimed at the sun itself.

Nope. The world does not have, nor will it ever have, that kind of power. Thankfully, there is One who does. And He has given me access to eternal life, if I want it. And I DO. So, I know I’m tapped into the source of Life where all the power in the universe originates.

And I know I can do all things through Him. Two key points to that last statement. Just because I CAN doesn’t mean I DO. And “all things” means those things doable by me, with the gifts and talents God gave me.

So, that’s why I use words and music to send out these messages to the world. I know, full well, that most of the world will never see or hear me. But there might be some, even one or two, who will see and hear and be turned back to their living, loving Creator.

And that would do more for me than all the sunbeams of the day.

I know the morning sun will shine,
And so, I’ll draw another line.
I’ll keep a box of all my most important things
Inside my heart where they can be
A constant song of joy to me.
I love the sound of optimism when it sings.

(from my song “I Can Do”)
