Encourage yourself to know what is and what isn't so

I’ll say it right up front. I’m for it. I believe it’s good to encourage yourself. Just as it’s good to encourage others. So, don’t misinterpret what I say about the following “psychological” advice.

Because it’s easy to encourage yourself into selfishness.

Here’s a definition of selfish, right out of (gasp!) a dictionary: lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one’s own personal profit or pleasure

OK, before I share what’s on my mind about it, here’s a snippet from a psychology website article. The writer presents three ways to show “self-compassion:

1. Mindfulness: Having an open, curious, non-judging attitude; not over-identifying with negative stories about the self.

2. Self-kindness: Treating yourself kindly, rather than harshly. Extending the same care and support to yourself that you would to a good friend or loved one.

3. Common humanity: Allowing yourself to be human, to make mistakes and learn from them. Knowing that as humans we are not perfect, nor should we be expected to act flawlessly.

Generally speaking, those aren’t terrible ideas.

After all, even the Bible says to “love your neighbor as yourself.” And if you love yourself, naturally you’re gonna be kind, curious, and let yourself be human. But how would you know if you’re being those things or not being those things if you have a “non-judging attitude?”

Your whole life requires your ability to make the most informed decisions you can make. And decisions, to be clear, are always judgment calls. When you can’t judge something to be good or bad, how can you possibly choose good?

Of course you should allow “yourself to be human.” Because, of course, you’re “not perfect.” But every human should recognize that humans don’t exist as the result of mutational changes. You and I were made in the image and likeness of God. And His perfect word provides wisdom for good judgment.

The writer of that article followed up the three points with this conclusion:

In my clinical practice, I teach self-compassion to all of my clients, and I am always impressed by how much it can transform their relationship with themselves and promote healthier ways of living. Self-compassion is much more effective in changing behavior than trying to motivate yourself with shame and self-criticism. Shame and self-criticism lead to inner rebellion and giving up, while self-compassion gives you hope and helps you trust the process of change.

See why I said what I said about self-encouragement?

A psychologist might say “self-compassion gives you hope and helps you trust the process of change.” But it’s a much better judgment call to realize only God can give you hope. So, trust in Him.

And it all seems helpless, hopeless,
In a world that’s full of brokenhearted.
Reckless, faithless,
From the ones still here and the dear departed.
When was all this madness started?
When we began to flee
From responsibility.

(lyrics from my song “Responsibility”)

Encouragement for the day is focused on the Way

Here’s some encouragement for the day. But it’s only for people who aren’t fools. People who understand the difference between delusion and reality. And if that direct and simple statement triggers a negative reaction in your head, you might be in the fools camp.

But even people with wisdom can use some encouragement for the day.

Because this planet is spinning on its evil axis just the way the ruler of this world desires. And his billions of minions do everything they can to beat you down. Unless you’re not speaking up for the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In that case, you pose no threat to the ruler’s devious masterplan. But if you ARE speaking up, then you’re dealing with the consequences of your courage.

And I want YOU to be encouraged. And to never forget you’re on the winning team. Because you know the ruler of this world has a time limit. And you know that when his time is up, there will be a new ruler.

That ruler will be the one, true, living, loving Creator of Heaven and Earth.

And all of us who choose to follow Him have this hope-filled knowledge:

We Win

It should be so easy
To just see we’re not free
As long as the innocent die.

To say that it’s legal
We spit on the eagle
Who stands for what we once held high.

It’s hard when we count up the cost,
And a million more lives have been lost.
True love won’t give up or give in.
Hang in there. It’s worth it. We win.

It’s not law. We got law.
And we saw that each law

Kept taking us further from truth.
When logic and reason
Don’t have their due season,
The lies end up long in the tooth.

So work hard and take time to pray
For lives to be saved every day.
True love won’t give up or give in.
Hang in there. It’s worth it. We win.

Hang in there…we have to see it through.
It’s worth it…watch how it changes you.

OK, I’ve got a line for you to sing to the tune of “If you’re happy and you know it.” Ready? Here you go. 🎶 If you’re worried and you know it, do not fret. 🎶 Now. Don’t you feel better already?

Three simple words. Do not fret.

But if they’re so simple, why do most people find the advice impossible to follow?

Because most people (I hope that doesn’t include you) don’t care to listen to what God tells them.

“What?! You mean God actually tells me to fret?!”

Yes. Yes, He does.

“But,” you might ask, “Does God understand how much evil is going on in the world?”

Yes. Yes He does.

And He still says “Do Not Fret.”

And just in case you think He must say it more profoundly…NO. Because God prefers for us to get it. And He wants as many people as possible to get it. So, it makes his most important points easy to understand. And that means when He wants us not to fret, He just tells us not to do it.

Of course, He might use a king to tell us. In fact, He DID use a king to tell us. King David. And David knew a thing or two about “evildoers.” But he still said not to worry because of them.

Yeah, but David wasn’t up against a world filled with people who want to prosper off the problems of others. Right? And he didn’t have to deal with schemers who went around planning wicked stuff. Right?

Wrong.

David was able to relate to what we have to deal with these days because he had to deal with those same kinds of things in his day.

But God inspired David to write: “Do not fret because of evildoers.”

I’ve said it before. But it bears repeating. Show the world how to be and stay positive in times like this.

Because”

If for no other reason, you know you’re truly blessed.
And you know you’ll live forever in the place that’s the best.
You know this world can never beat your spirit down for good.
So now you’ll give up worry, or at least you’ll know you should.

Encouraging words speak louder than thunderbirds

I just listened to a young, 20 year old man’s pro life (aka abolish abortion) speech he gave just a few days ago. And his exhortative, yet encouraging words, impressed me in a unique way. Because I know this guy. And because, other than his parents, I’m probably the first person to sing to him when he was a baby.

And I say encouraging words because he’s only 20.

When I was his age, I didn’t even know America had an abortion problem. And that wasn’t long after Roe v Wade became the so-called “law of the land.” So, it’s mighty nice to know there are younger people who understand the need to stand up for the most innocent human beings on the planet.

And it’s encouraging to know this 20 year old guy stands on the right side of the wall. If you’d like to know more about him or hear his speech, let me know, and I’ll share some links.

If You Stand Behind That Wall

There’s a wall here between life and death
Where the unborn are denied their first breath.
There are guards here making sure that life ends
And they don’t care that they’re killing our friends.

Well you can’t plead ignorance…You don’t stand blameless
When you stand in the middle of it all.
As you discard the innocent you shake foundations.
If you stand behind that wall, you will fall.

There’s a clear line between right and wrong.
Listen close, please, to the words of this song.
We were all, once, where those babies are now.
Mothers kept us…we all made it somehow.

Well, the martyred little ones your choice keeps nameless
Never had any single choice at all.
Please don’t discard the innocent…they’re God’s creation.
If you stand behind that wall, you will fall.

You will fall from Grace to a hopeless place
With eternal, mournful cries.
And the sound you’ll hear ringing in your ear
Is the sound of your own lies.

Monday is here and there's nothing to fear

Monday is here. Did you notice?

It seems like, in this day and age, there wouldn’t be as much dread about it. But when I was searching for something this morning, I noticed the phrase, Monday is here, was a popular search term on Google. So, I clicked it to see why.

It seems like people still don’t like when Monday is here.

About three fourths of the posts and images I saw for that search term were about dread. And I think one of the funniest I saw was a meme that said “If Monday had a face, I’d punch it.” Yikes. I think someone doesn’t like his job.

But there was another group of people who seem to be encouragers. And they said things like, “When life gives you a Monday, dip it in glitter and sparkle all day.” I’ll go out on a limb, take a wild guess, and say that wasn’t a man who shared that. (Not a real man anyway.)

And I guess I’m just not up on who’s working where these days. Because I figured there were enough people working non-traditional schedules. In other words, not working the usual Monday through Friday jobs. But, it appears most people still do.

Where do you fit into this? Do you work the traditional five days a week with Saturday and Sunday off? Or do you work some other 40 hours? Or even 60 or more?

Wherever you fit it, I hope your week starts off great. And soars from there.

And Monday is another chance to say
I hope you have a mighty awesome day.
And use your gifts to serve your fellow man
In ways that you should know only you can.

Wednesday encouragement with your blessing and consent

Here’s a little Wednesday encouragement

If it’s Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, just ignore this message. Because this is specially designed Wednesday encouragement. I won’t be responsible for results you get by attempting to use it on those other days.

“Why Wednesday encouragement, Tony?” you ask.

Well, I’m glad you asked because I’d like to expound with great profundity on that topic. And I’d love to illuminate the catacombs of your weary understanding and reasoning with wit, wisdom, and whimsy.

Either that, or I’d like to help take your mind off the vicious virus news.

Here in Colorado, we’ve been issued a “stay at home order” by someone calling himself a governor. And I know most of my readers and listeners are more the lemonade type rather than lemons type. But still, who doesn’t enjoy a little encouragement and entertainment in the middle of challenges?

So, that being said, I’d like to encourage you to take all the opportunity you’re being presented (aka being forced on you) and make some delicious, organic lemonade. With just the right amount of sweetness. And exhilarating tartness. And I hope you know I don’t mean it has to be actual lemonade. Right? Of course, I mean, this is a great time to put some extra time in on those parts of your life you’d like to improve. No matter what that is for you, this is, like I said, a great time of opportunity.

So many others out there will be looking for ways to “not be bored.”

And that’s a loser’s game. You and I can use our time to build up business. Or increase our knowledge. And even expand our abilities to serve others. Because that’s the only way you ever truly win in life.

Yeah, you’re gonna hear and see a lot of fear talk. A lot of speculation. But truth, right, and wrong don’t change. Here’s how I see it…

I hope you don’t mind if I don’t join in
With the people who just naysay.
I think you might find, if you just begin,
You might feel the very same way.
Life can get real dark like a starless night.
So, be glad when the Lord sends day.
Go and make your mark without fear or fright.
And you might as well start Wednesday.

Hey Christians...be encouraged. We win

We win when we choose the right team

Back in 2009 I was in the middle of my three years as a music leader for a small Denver area church. It was (and is) a church with a strong, abolitionist, pro life foundation. And they were leading the charge to establish the personhood of the child in the mother’s womb. That whole movement was not only up against the abortion industry but also the other Christian and “pro life” organizations who thought (and think) the abolition stand is unworkable. I wanted to do what I could to encourage them to keep going. So I wrote the song, We Win, and my friend Jason produced a video.

We win because God wins.

I’m talking about Christians of course. And when I say “we win”, it’s about the struggles all human beings face in this life. Too many people…most in fact…are choosing to serve themselves and thumb their noses at God and His command to love and serve others. That’s a recipe for losing and losers.

If you’re NOT on the side against God, I urge you to reconsider before it’s too late. And it’s only too late when you take your last breath. If you’re on God’s team, I encourage you to hang in there. Remember, the last book in the Bible gives us a peek at what’s coming. So…it’s worth it…

We Win

It should be so easy
To just see we’re not free
As long as the innocent die.

To say that it’s legal
We spit on the eagle
Who stands for what we once held high.

It’s hard when we count up the cost,
And a million more lives have been lost.
True love won’t give up or give in.
Hang in there. It’s worth it. We win.

It’s not law. We got law.
And we saw that each law
Kept taking us further from truth.

When logic and reason
Don’t have their due season,
The lies end up long in the tooth.

So work hard and take time to pray
For lives to be saved every day.
True love won’t give up or give in.
Hang in there. It’s worth it. We win.
