Inspired to write and to capture the light

Over the course of my life, I’ve been inspired to write songs by a wide variety of stimuli. From a technicolor sunset, to a mountain vista, and even down to a single word. And sometimes I’m inspired by how someone will twist a phrase and use it as a product or service or even a business name.

Like how I was inspired to write the song, “Let’s Capture Life Together.”

I did some online work for a local photographer, here in the shadow of Pike’s Peak. And I liked the name of her business. Capture Life Photography. So, I wrote a song based on that theme. Capturing life.

And the song is made up of three verses. No chorus. No bridge. Just three verses. Because life, just like time, is made up of three parts. Past. Present. And Future. And we can’t stop the passing of time. But the closest we can get to making it seem like it is photography. A picture can capture a singular second. And hold it in place.

So, even thought we can’t stop time or move back and forth in it (despite what the Avengers and Star Trek would have you believe), technology helps us save bits and pieces. And that’s why I felt inspired to write about it and share it with you. So, if you don’t have any other plans, today…

Let’s Capture Life Together

Here we are,
Livin’ life each minute, so glad that we’re in it.
Every day,
And forever after, sharin’ love and laughter
Holdin’ on in every kind of weather.

Here we stand,
While the clock is tickin’ we’re alive and kickin’
Time moves on,
But we must remember, keep a burnin’ ember.
Let’s go out and capture life together.

Here we go
With our hearts on fire, reachin’ ever higher
Days go by,
So we’ll keep a token of the love unspoken
Let’s go out and capture life together.
Yeah, let’s go out and capture life together.

Stay tuned,

Resurrection Sunday 2020 for more than the cognoscenti

Happy Resurrection Sunday 2020

As I do every year, I’m gonna share my song, The Way, with a link to the video I made way back in 2011. And I’d like to think maybe somebody, who’s not already a Christian, will see it and change their eternal destination. Not because of my song. Or anything to do with me. But because of who it’s talking about. It would be awesome to think I helped even one person celebrate Resurrection Sunday 2020 in a way they never did before.

Resurrection Sunday 2020 isn’t gonna be the same as years past.

But you don’t need a special “Easter Sunrise Service” or some special church presentation to celebrate or remember. In fact, in some ways those might be distractions from the real reason this day means so much.

Here’s an excellent video Sunday service that shows an awesome way to connect our current pandemic with resurrection.

As much as I always enjoyed the chocolates, the colored eggs, and Easter baskets when I was growing up, Easter is so much more. Infinitely more. Because it’s the day the whole world, whether they know it or not, acknowledges Jesus rising from the dead. And that was after suffering unthinkable torture and death. Hung from a wooden cross with nails through his hands and feet.

All that suffering after being found not guilty in a so-called “court of law.”

The Way

And it came to pass one day on a mountain far away
That a soul was taken and a life forsaken
Because someone had to pay
For the heart of all mankind.
There was no untarnished mind.
So one life was spent Who was innocent,
But He left His Word behind…

Forgive them for they know not what they do.
Redeem them and I give My Blood to You.
We can rise up
No matter how much the guilt might weigh.
He said…”I am the Way!”

Now so many years have gone
And we love with blinders on.
How we tolerate is a form of hate.
Where’s the Rock He stood upon?
For the Truth is absolute and it’s foolish to dispute.
It confounds the wise but it opens eyes,
And it saves the destitute

Chorus

Now don’t turn to the left don’t turn to the right.
Just run straight to Him with all your might!

Music and arts and where it all starts

Music and Arts

When you put a forward slash between numbers, they can become a fraction. For example: 3/4. But the language I love the most makes different use of that arrangement of numbers. In music and arts composition, 3/4 time means there’s a beat missing…so to speak. And it can turn a collection of notes into a strikingly simple, yet beautiful creation. It’s inspirational to see how you can stir the emotions of an entire audience simply by removing 1 note from each bar of music.

Music and arts creators can only collect and manipulate.

Whether Anthony Hopkins knows it or not, his wonderful composition didn’t originate in him. Oh sure, he’s the one who composed the music notes and either wrote them down or recorded them. But ultimately he, and everyone who enjoys this piece, needs to acknowledge the Creator of music.

God.

We humans don’t truly “create” anything. It was all created already. We can re-create, procreate, and manipulate. But we can only do that using what has already been created. Music and arts are part of creation. Part of that which was created from nothing. Only God can create something from nothing. Something can’t create itself from nothing. It’s observable in science, so this isn’t some purely theological theory I’m tossing out here.

Music and arts and where it all starts

Music manipulation leads to audience elation.

When I watched the original video, where Mr. Hopkins got to hear his composition played by an orchestra for the first time, I was reminded of how much I deeply love musical arrangements like “Sir Anthony’s”. And I smiled as I watched the audience members sway to the flow. And I got the sense he was truly and humbly moved by the outpouring of adoration. It must have been a compliment he’ll never forget. Nor should he.

My hope, for him, is that he gives thanks to God for giving him such a delightful musical gift. It would be a great pleasure to speak to Mr. Hopkins about the experience…even if I have to wait to the fully eternal part of my life…because that would mean he trusted God, too.

Ah, but pay me no mind. I’m just a sentimental ol’ dude over here tapping his toes in 3/4 time.

Be sure to jump on the one-of-a-kind The TRUTH today, and I’ll send you some free rhymes and reasons right away. Music, a book, and lots of good faith, hope, and love stuff.

And share with everyone you know. Don’t keep these goodies all to yourself.

Open your mind to infinite possibilities

Open your mind to a train of thought

Have you ever been called close-minded? If you’re a Christian who rightly divides the word of truth, I wouldn’t be surprised, at all, if you have. I can’t tell you how many times an unbeliever has said something like, “You need to open your mind to all the scientific evidence out there instead of your Bible stories.” And that’s ironic, to say the least, because I’ve shared tons of scientific evidence for creation (as opposed to evolution) right here on my website. It’s in living color for all the world to see. I’m not close-minded. Narrow-minded, yes. But I’m consistently jumping on a free-thinking train of thought.

Open your mind to truth that will set you free.

I think the truly close-minded people are the ones who dogmatically stick to the atheistic, evolutionary worldview while insisting Christians are dogmatic. (side note: dogmatic sounds like a canine car to me, but I digress) One dictionary defines dogma like this: “a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true: the Christian dogma of the Trinity” – Under that description, I have no problem being dogmatic about the Trinity. After all, it’s “laid down” by THE authority. God.

If the Bible isn’t true, then anything you care to believe…anything you choose to do is right. You can live any way you want, do anything you want, say anything you want, and it’s true. As long as it’s true for YOU. But if you believe the Bible isn’t true…and it IS…one day you’re gonna be in another world of hurt. Eternal hurt.

Open your mind to infinite possibilities

I’d like you to open your mind to a couple of thoughts today. Truly open your mind. Don’t read or listen to what I say with scorn or your mouth ready to blast me for even sharing these thoughts. Just let them enter your mind and simmer and marinate for a day or two. Are you willing to be that open-minded? Good. Here they are.

There IS a God. You’re not Him. And He loves you.

Ok, that’s three, but “a couple of thoughts” was a figure of speech anyway. The point is…if those three things aren’t true, or you don’t believe them, then do, live, and be anything and any way you determine is right for you. Live it up. Eat, drink, and be merry. Because you might die tomorrow…or even today. And you wouldn’t want to go to that infinite black hole without having done everything your little heart desired. Would you?

But keep it mind (you did open your mind didn’t you?) the possibility I’m telling you the actual truth. The Truth can either set you free or send you where you chose to go. To an eternal separation from your Creator…where you’ll exist forever with nothing more than your own train of thought.

Is it really worth the risk?

Be sure to jump on the one-of-a-kind The TRUTH today and get my latest words, music, and voice delivered to your inbox instead of having to come looking for them all the time.

End of the road doesn't have to be the end of the road

A great young man found the end of the road this week

Imagine you’re sixteen. You’re just beginning to look like the adult you’re becoming. You have your whole life ahead of you. Now, imagine you’ve just been told that your whole life might be only another year. Maybe less. Lots of young people would immediately use it as an excuse to wallow in self-pity. But Jeremiah Thomas kept smiling. He knew there’s a God. A Savior. For anyone who chooses to trust and believe. And when Jeremiah reached the end of the road this week…in his battle with cancer…he went to be face to face with his Savior.

So, is death a scary thing for you?

The Bible says “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” And no matter who you are…man, woman…young, old…rich, poor…Christian, atheist…you will “fall into the hands of the living God” when you die. Am I making it sound scary, yet?

There’s a way to avoid the “fearful” part. Believe. And trust. Not just anyone or anything. And certainly not the universe or some other non-living entity. Trust Jesus. Don’t just do it because I say so. Test my assertions. Open the Bible and actually read and study it. Not to simply attempt to discredit it, but to honestly see what it says. Jeremiah Thomas was raised on the Truth in the Bible. So when he came to end of the road a couple of days ago, he fell into the hands of the living God. But he was received with the eternal love only Jesus can give.

Is your end of the road far off or close?

Most people don’t know the answer to that question. If you’re one of them, ask yourself this: “If I die today or tomorrow, what’s gonna happen to me?” And if you don’t know the answer…it’s a fearful thing.

Be sure to jump on the one-of-a-kind The TRUTH today and get my latest words, music, and voice delivered to your inbox instead of having to come looking for them all the time.

And share with your friends, family, and other business owners. Don’t keep this good stuff all to yourself.

Video and Audio - this is what you oughta know

Video and Audio – be seen AND heard –

I remember, 20 years ago, when I started working online, how even having a website was a challenge for most businesses. And expensive. There were website design companies sometimes charging tens of thousands of dollars to build a business website. And 99% of them had no video and audio. These days, brand videos are necessary for most small and medium business owners. Video is no longer an option if you want to stay competitive online. Of course, they’re not free…unless you can produce them yourself. And even then, you should consider the time investment before jumping in.

Video and audio don’t have to be complicated, but they do have to BE.

According to surveys, you’re probably more likely to prefer websites with video over websites with just words and pictures. I know I do. Who wants to browse through endless sites with only text and stock images, when you can watch a video and connect on a deeper level? Those surveys also say video is key to driving conversions. And that means more potential for selling more stuff. Of course, that’s only important if making money is important to you and your business.

The great news is”if you wanna stand out from the crowd online, you still can. Use video and audio. Like I did. Did you watch this message, or just read the article? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Video marketing statistics agree with me”

  • One-third of online activity is spent watching video.
  • More than half of video content is viewed on mobile devices
  • Audiences engage mostly with videos 2 minutes and under
  • Landing page videos can increase conversions by 87%

Even though 85% of Facebook videos are watched without sound, if you wanna be seen AND heard AND remembered, go to the next level with a custom commercial song. You’d immediately set yourself apart from video makers who don’t use sound…or have awful sound. I know it’s self-serving for me to mention that, but hey”I’m online to sell stuff too. And I’ve seen the power of deeper connection with a target audience using video AND brand music. And isn’t that what you’re working hard to do? Connect with your clients, customers, or audience in a way they’ll never forget?

You can think it over. But keep in mind…every day lots of other savvy business owners are committing to custom  video and audio. Some of them might be your competition.

Gotta love a lab like Nestle

Gotta love a Lab

As I begin to write this, it’s been less than 24 hours since one of our best buddies died. And I’m sadder than I’ve been in years. I already miss his face more than words can express. His name was Nestlē. He was also known as Nestlē, the crunch bar…and my wife also affectionately called him “my chocolate mess”. Those names came about because he was what’s commonly referred to as a Chocolate Lab…a brown Labrador Retriever. He was a great reason why I say you gotta love a Lab.

Back in 2003, Elgielene (my wife) and I had been living in the first house we ever bought for about 9 months. And she mentioned one day how she thought it would be great to get a dog. You know…since we finally had our own house instead of an apartment. So, we started perusing the papers for puppies. We had long since decided that, if we ever got a dog, we’d like a Lab. And we found an ad for a new litter of them in Franktown, Colorado. It wasn’t the closest to where we lived, but their description piqued our interest, so off we drove.

Gotta love a Lab and his 8 siblings…

When we arrived at the owner’s place, out in the hilly countryside, the first thing we saw was a back yard teeming with Labrador puppies. The mama dog had given birth to nine puppies, and at that point they were about 7 1/2 weeks old. Eight of them had that classic roly-poly Labrador puppy look…plump, snub-nosed, and falling clumsily all over themselves. And one didn’t look quite so healthy. His ears were too big for his body, and his eyes looked puffy…as though he was battling a bad cold or something.

But the sickly looking dog caught my eye and captured my heart because he could handle himself better than his brothers and sisters. Even though he was the runt of the litter and didn’t appear healthy, he could literally bound over the others while barking a spirit-filled bark…as if to say, “I’m here, by golly, and everybody’s gonna know it!”

You’re probably thinking, “A-ha! You took the runt home, named him Nestlē, and now you’re recollecting those first memories.” Nope. But I did notice how no one else wanted to pick up the runt and look him over. And the owners told us they “let nature take its course” when it came to runts. I told my wife we needed to buy the runt. My heart couldn’t simply “let nature take its course”.

And my wife agreed to take the runt home with us, but…

…while I had been checking out the runt…she had been holding another puppy. She asked me to come look him over. And he was beautiful. Rich, dark chocolate brown. Classic Lab features. For all intents and purposes, a flawless puppy. But the owners were selling their puppies for $350 each, and I reminded my wife that we couldn’t afford two…and that if we didn’t take the runt, probably no one would…and he’d likely be pushed out of the feeding line by his siblings and die.

My wife agreed, somewhat reluctantly, put down the brown puppy, and we paid for the runt…a Golden Lab. We put him in the van and made the long drive home.

We named our new puppy Zazzo. It was a name I had concocted when we first began contemplating getting a dog. And the little guy would zig-zag when he walked, so it seemed to fit. During those first couple of days and nights with our new pet Elgielene kept recalling how she just couldn’t get her mind off the chocolate puppy. And she was afraid we’d made a mistake by spending so much money on a “sick dog”. So, on the third day, I relented and told her to call the people who had the puppies to see if the brown one had been purchased yet. They told her “no” and…

…we made the long drive back to the farm and bought the brownie.

I still remember staying in the van with Zazzo while my wife went in to get the new addition to the family. It was a windy day in April of 2003, and when she came walking out, hair blowing in her face and carrying the chubby little chocolate puppy, who didn’t appear pleased at all, she exclaimed with a smile, “He’s so fat!”

We put both puppies in a laundry basket and made that long drive home again. The brown boy started whimpering, and Zazzo nuzzled up to him as if to comfort him and say, “It’s OK, bro…they’re nice.”

Since there had been no plans to get two puppies, we didn’t have two names planned. And at first we just used the temporary name the previous owners had given the little chocolate guy…Hunter. He got that name because he followed his nose wherever it took him. But we knew we wanted to call him something else. Something more special. A name that wouldn’t be so common to chocolate Labs. You know…like Hershey or Mocha. After the first couple of days with two puppies, I came home from work, and Elgielene said, “I think I have the perfect name for chocolate boy. Wanna hear it?” I said, “sure”. She said…”Nestlē.” He’s my little crunch bar.” And I said, “Perfect!”

So, for the next almost 15 years the little crunch bar…who became a rather large crunch bar…was our constant companion. And anyone who can take a furry guy like Nestlē into their home and not be changed forever is a heartless so-and-so. I had been raised to believe pet dogs were to be raised outdoors and remain simply pets. But once we got to know our messy, poopy, goopy, pets…they became our friends…our family.

If you don’t love dogs, you probably don’t understand my sadness.

But if you’ve ever experienced the pet connection that can only be made with a dog, you might relate to why I say you gotta love a Lab. And, as long as I live, I’ll never forget our Nestlē crunch bar. Our chocolate mess. Those times he’d come and lay his head on my knee and look up at me with those deep, brown eyes. Or when he’d come into my studio and stand with his head between my knees looking up at me as I rehearsed or composed my music. I can still smell his special doggie scent, hear him burping, passing gas, and snoring. Yes, he snored. I miss everything about him. And my heart aches to see him again one day.

There’s nothing in the Bible that says we’ll be reunited with our beloved pets, but I love what Joni Eareckson Tada wrote in her book “Holiness in Hidden Places”… “If God brings our pets back to life, it wouldn’t surprise me. It would be just like him. It would be totally in keeping with his generous character. . . Exorbitant. Excessive. Extravagant in grace after grace.”

Wherever Nestlē is right now, I trust God that it’s perfect for him.

And I trust that he’s pain-free, struggle-free, and awaiting that day when, like it says in Romans 8:20-21, “the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” After all, Nestlē was another one of God’s most beautiful creations. And he showed me how you gotta love a Lab.

Are you dealing with the death or loss of a beloved pet? If so, I hope this brings you comfort.

Now, maybe you don’t know me well enough to buy something from me, yet. Ok, let’s change that. Get to know more about me and my worldview. Join the growing body of believers who’ve signed up for the Tony’s Rhyme and Reason Daily Devotional. And bask in daily, delightful flashes of light from the power of God’s love.

Stay tuned…
