No Right to Sing the Blues so I'll wear my happy shoes

I’ve got no right

My life has not always been a bed of roses. Unlike everyone else in the world, I’ve had some challenges to overcome. I know this is completely foreign to you. But bear with me. And I’ll show you how I came to realize I still have no right to sing the blues.

No Right to Sing the Blues so I'll wear my happy shoes

” What? No right to sing the blues? What does that even mean, Tony?”

Well, thanks a ton for asking, my fine-feathered friend.

Yeah, I’ve had to face some fairly serious obstacles in life. And even though I spent most of my life complaining, griping, and moaning about it, I still had to come to grips with it. Because, let’s face it, I ain’t getting any younger. And I ain’t the king of the world.

Before I go any further, let me clear something up. I haven’t spent most of my life complaining, griping, and moaning. In fact, most anyone who’s ever known me, from childhood till now, will tell you those actions would be anti me. No, I’m not that way. And even if sometimes I have to make it an act of my will, I choose to be positive.

And that’s partly what inspired the lyrics to one of my latest songs. It’s called “No Right To Sing The Blues.” Here’s the lyrics to the chorus…

So, I know I’ve got no right to sing the blues.
And I guess I’ll go put on my happy shoes.
If the dark thoughts try to tempt me, I’ll refuse.
“˜Cause I know I’ve got no right to sing the blues.

And it all means I don’t have a “right” to complain, gripe, or moan about life.

A right is something you can defend with force. In other words, if singin’ the blues about your life is your right, you should be able to force people to listen to you. And I think you can agree that sounds silly right away. Right?

So, I choose to focus on the sweet music of life. And I look forward to living my life forever. Through time without end. Long, long after the troubles of this world wear out my physical body. I hope you can say that, too. If not, it’s not too late to change that. It’s gonna take humility and faith. But I know you’ll be glad you did.

And if you need some help knowing what to do, read all through my website. Or send me an email. I’ll be glad to help.

And…psst…if you tune in to the The Power of God’s Love Podcast, you’ll hear a trailer for the “No Right…” song.

Stay tuned,

Confidence is key as you face eternity

Yeah, confidence is key

There once was a guy who had everything a human being could want. At least as far what most people could see. He also had a lot of things nobody would want. Including enemies everywhere. But he focused on the good side of the equation. Even when he acknowledged all the bad. And he understood confidence is key. Because he knew this life isn’t all there is.

Confidence is key as you face eternity

Confidence is key…even in what you can’t see.

This morning, I saw a quote, on Twitter, from Ravi Zacharias. Apparently he said, “To sustain the belief that there is no God, atheism has to demonstrate infinite knowledge. Which is tantamount to saying, ‘I have infinite knowledge that there is no being in existence with infinite knowledge.”

Coincidentally, I said the same thing recently. Well, the same thing in a different way. Here’s how I put it:

“Only a fool could or would dare to make the claim that there is no God. Because it’s a self-refuting assertion. In order to say it so absolutely, you’d have to know everything there is to know about everything in and around the universe. And in order to know all that, you’d have to BE God. Which would mean your argument would sound foolish.”

I never met Mr. Zacharias. And I never followed his life. If I remember correctly, I might have heard him on the radio. But it appears he understood how foolish it is to be an atheist, too. Because there’s nothing that brings you comfort and gives you confidence.

And don’t tell me science gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling at night when you’re all alone.

That guy I mentioned, at the start of this article, understood this, too. In fact, he’s the one who first wrote, “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”Yeah, that guy was none other than King David. From the Old Testament in the Bible.

His confidence in the God who loves us, and who has made eternal life available, is clear in his songs. And even as he shared those confident words, he was still human. With human weaknesses. And all the challenges that come with this world.

But faith, which is confidence, is the key.

To eternal life. And to the ability to face life’s struggles head on. Knowing you’ll make it through them all. And on the other side of life’s problems is paradise.

I hope you have the confidence
That will set your heart free,
The hope and faith you’ll live beyond
This world eternally.

Win the battle with a lot less prattle

Win the battle of wits with nitwits

“If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?” Yeah, that’s a line from a song by the Bellamy Brothers. And I remember seeing them live back in 1976. They opened for Loggins and Messina, one of my favorite bands, at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City, MO. It was a great place to hear music. Because it only held about 1200 to 2000 people. And when the lights were dimmed, the ceiling looked like stars shining. But how does knowing all that help you win the battle of wits with nitwits?

Win the battle with a lot less prattle

You can win the battle when you listen more and talk less.

I loved it when Loggins and Messina, and their band, would go into jam mode. Yeah, the could jam better than just about any other band. And I say that because I’m a musician, and I know these things. So, take it from a pro.

Actually, all seriousness aside…they truly did some awesome jams. And they’d do things like let the flute player take a nice long lead. Complete with tasty reverb and echo. Light drums, percussion, and easy bumpin’ bass in the background. Then, the flute would seamlessly meld into a harmonica lead by another guy in the band. And finally, the harmonica would morph into Kenny Loggins singing.

Mighty cool.

And I sat there with focused listening. The kind of listening where you hear each part. And you make mental notes of what they did and how they did it.

And when it comes to dealing with the nitwits of the world, you gotta be that same way. Don’t be drawn into their presumptive prattle. Or their nauseating natter chatter. Especially when they share how they feel about some issue of the day.

Instead, listen. Not to the nitwits. To that song you remember from 1976. Or maybe to that thought in your head that’s reminding you where you’re going for grass fed steak this evening.

But don’t forget to smile and nod while the nitwits are talking.

They love that. And they live for it.

Why does this, or should this, matter to you? Maybe it doesn’t. Because maybe you never have to deal with any nitwits. But mark my words. They’re everywhere. Many of them are hiding behind masks. And many more are hiding behind stage. Waiting for a time to make an entrance.

And they all want to be on the bandwagon,
Jammin’ with the band with their feet draggin’
Livin’ out their lives like morning glories,
Not knowing theirs are the shortest stories.
And it’s such a sad shame.
Such a flickering flame.

Rest in hope? Most people say nope.

What? Me, rest in hope? Yeah, right.

I still remember sad conversations with friends, from my past, who were atheists. And I say “sad” because so many (if not all) atheists believe when you die, that’s it. Darkness. Nothingness. No R.I.P. Because when you die, all that is you ceases to be. And it makes me sad for them because I know they can’t rest in hope.

Knowing you’re created helps you rest in hope.

When you realize there’s a Creator who had a reason for creating, hopelessness falls away. Like dying leaves in the Autumn breezes. And just like those dying leaves fall every year, you know the new leaves will grow back the next spring. That’s hope. And optimism. All around you.

And why would anyone not want that same feeling for their own life?

My friends from the past would say they DO want that hope. But it just doesn’t exist. Because God doesn’t exist. But I always wondered how they could be so dead set sure about that.

Of course, people who don’t believe (and trust) in God feel they can ask believers that same question. How can we be so dead set sure He DOES exist? And when you know you’re up against a closed mind and a hardened heart, you can see how all the evidence in the world won’t sway them.

All the evidence in the world.

In fact, the whole world IS evidence. Except to those who WILL not see.

I love how David wrote, in Psalm 16, about his hope. “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

If you don’t have a hope of forever
And life in God’s paradise,
I suggest you don’t wait till whenever
To accept His sacrifice.

Calm down, carry on. Music helps the stress be gone.

Calm down and carry on

Are you a little bit stressed (or a lot) by so much of what’s going on in the world right now? Yeah, it can pretty stressful to see so many polar opposite opinions of what’s going on. And how to solve the problems. So, a lot of people turn to drugs to help ease the stress. But what if you could calm down and carry on without using drugs? And without all those possible side effects. Well, I have a suggestion.

Maybe music can help you calm down and be up.

Of course, I’m bias when it comes to music. As a lifelong musician, I’ve seen (and felt) its almost medicinal benefits. And there’s nothing more uplifting than experiencing the birth of a new song.

(Side note: I’ve experienced a whole litter of new songs in the past couple of months.)

So, my bias will show through anytime I share anything about the health benefits of music. But that doesn’t mean I’m wrong, of course. It just means I want the information to be true. And that might skew my view. Only a little. And not to the point of telling lies. Just to the point of encouraging action steps.

OK, that being said…what’s with this whole music and stress connection? Well, let’s say you have to go to the doctor because you’ve been having kidney or bladder problems. And your doctor says he’s gonna have to operate to alleviate your pain.

What happens the minute you hear you need an operation? Yeah, exactly. Your heart rate and blood pressure go up. But you know you don’t wanna keep dealing with all that pain. So, you agree, sign the form, and schedule the operation.

Then, the day of the surgery arrives. And you’re prepped and ready. They wheel you into the operating room. And, as your doctor smiles at you and explains the first steps, you notice he has ear buds in his ears. He sees you looking and says, “Hope you don’t mind. I’m gonna listen to Beethoven while I operate. It keeps me calm.”

How could you mind? Right? Anything that helps your surgeon stay calm and do the best job possible sounds like the right thing. But then, he tells you, “Oh, and we’re gonna give you some headphones so you can listen to the same music. And we’ll keep you awake during the operation. Sound good?”

Wait a minute. Headphones? Music?

“Uh, how about some anesthesia, doc?”

“Now, relax. Of course, we’ll administer anesthesia. But we won’t need to use as much supplementary intravenous sedation. Because the music is gonna help you calm down.”

Would you go for it? I would. Because research shows patients, who need an operation, and who listen to music, need less calming medication. And the less meds you’re on, the faster your body can get back to work on its natural ability to heal.

Plus…music helps to lower blood pressure and heart rate. And it helps boost immunity. Even as it lowers the stress hormone, adrenaline, in your blood. Oh yeah, it also helps lower cytokine interleukin-6, small proteins that can promote inflammation. And you don’t want’ that.

Keep in mind, I’m not talking about just any run-of-the-mill music. After all, how calm are you gonna be during your operation, if they blast some heavy metal or hip-hop into your head? No. Professionals will know your health and well-being are gonna require the good stuff. Beethoven. Or Mozart. Or Haydn.

But don’t wait till you need an operation to find out how well this works.

Calm yourself down today.
Music is an awesome way.
Make your day go right and sleep better at night.
That’s what good doctors say.

Cognitive function at the musical junction

How’s your cognitive function?

The blank slate. Einstein’s static universe. The planet Vulcan. Evolution. What do all these have in common? They’re all famous theories that have been debunked. And another one, maybe not quite as famous, might be debunked, too. But for now it seems to be true. I’m talking about how music improves cognitive function.

Can music actually improve your cognitive function?

Well, if it does, I’d have to say a huge amount of people, on social media, aren’t listening to music. But maybe that’s not the best place for research (even though social media is the source of all truth).

So, back to the point. First, what is cognitive function? Basically it’s your brain’s capacity for tasks like learning, thinking, reasoning, remembering, and problem solving. And some researchers at the University of California, Irvine, studied what they call the “Mozart Effect” on a person’s brain. Because it has been discovered I have amazing mathematical abilities.

Oops…I meant, they’ve observed how many musicians have “unusual mathematical abilities.” So, same difference.

Anyway…

Those researchers did a test a three groups of empty-headed people…uh, I mean college students. First, they tested their IQ. And they did a comparison. One group had spent 10 minutes in silence before the test. Another spent that time listening to a relaxation tape. And the third group listened to a Mozart piano sonata.

The Mozart listeners were the winners. And their scores consistently went up when compared to the others. Holy Amadeus, Batman! That’s pretty cool. And they did other comparisons. But each time Mozart’s music won.

So, the researchers theorize that listening to music “helps organize the firing of nerve cells in the right half of the cerebral cortex.” I recently talked about some other benefits of healthy neurons. And I believe listening to more complex music gives your brain a much better workout. And that’s probably why I have, oops, I mean…so many musicians have those “unusual mathematical abilities.”

And just to be clear…this isn’t a brain fix thing.

In other words, you can’t just listen to Mozart and become brilliant. The research also showed the effect might be somewhat temporary. But you certainly won’t be stupider. And the benefits of exercise are always temporary. That’s why you gotta keep exercising. Right?

So, if you’re looking for a way to build up your brain muscles, consider a little Mozart muscle music. Or even better, try some music from my favorite composer. And maybe I’ll see you at the musical gym sometime.

Workin’ out my brain as I sing a song’s refrain
Makes me smarter or at least that’s how it seems.
So, I’ll just sing my tunes mornings, evenings, afternoons,
And I’ll solve some math equations in my dreams.

Face to face with the King of Grace

Face to face in a forever place

Almost two years ago somebody sent me some information about a teenage guy fighting cancer. Of course, a teenager fighting cancer, unfortunately, isn’t rare news. But this particular young guy was an abolitionist in the battle against abortion. So, I checked out his story online. And I discovered he’d written and published a prayer on a website. One line stood out: “And I just can’t wait to see you face to face.”

Face to face with the King of Grace

And I wrote the song, “Jeremiah’s Prayer“, once I learned more about him.

He was a good fighter who still lost his battle with cancer. But it’s important to note, he didn’t lose his faith in and love for his Creator. And that’s an example any believer should follow…or lead with. Because God is not the author, creator, or perpetrator of disease. In fact, He’s quite the opposite.

But you and I live in, and contribute to, a broken, fallen world. Full of doubt, fear, and sin.

So, you and I are still gonna die one day. And that’s bad news.

But the good news is…you don’t have to fear it. At least if you know you’re going to live forever. It’s your choice. Live forever. Or exist, in death, forever. Either way, there’s only one who can make that decision for you.

You.

And also either way…either choice you make will get you a meeting with God…

Face to Face

When we’re born into this world,
We’re empty-handed.
We can’t speak, and we can barely even see.
As we grow we see this life,
In which we landed”
Is a thread of well-designed complexity.

Each and every one of us
Had a beginning…
And so very small a spark of life sufficed.
Then we turned away from God
And started sinning…
And that put us face to face with Jesus Christ.

Face to face with Truth…face to face with Life.
Yeah, the Way to paradise is face to face
With the One who died and who lives inside.
Jesus Christ even loves us face to face.

When we leave this world, we’re
Leaving empty-handed.
We can go to that eternal, perfect place.
When we make the choice of Life,
We won’t be stranded.
And we’ll get to see our Savior’s loving face.

Advertising music puts you in showbiz

Got this in an email from a guy I work with who was helping one of his clients post Facebook ads.

“___ has decided to abandon the Facebook ad campaign. She had over 1100 views of the ad with ZERO responses.”

I saw and heard her ad, and it was actually a very good one. She’s in a highly competitive niche, health and wellness, and there’s a lot of free stuff available online. So, it’s possible that might have had something to do with it. It’s also possible that some branded advertising music might have helped. I’ll tell you why I think so”

Are you seeing videos, or watching webinars, or listening to podcasts talking about how you gotta be able to “know yourself” and let everybody know what makes you different? Yeah, in a world of billions of people, you gotta be unique. Like no one else. The motivation experts will tell you how to

  • “transform your life”or
  • “win the day”or
  • “achieve all your goals”or
  • “succeed at life”or
  • “make things happen”

Advertising music won’t necessarily do all that.

But what advertising music WILL do is put YOU in the spotlight. When everybody is blasting out messages with generic music and beats in the background, you can be branding with audio. Your own personalized music will make you look and sound like a star”who is remembered. At least when it’s done right. In case you don’t know how to do it right”

If you’d like me to work on your project, call or email me about it, and let’s see if we’re a good match. Use the form on the side. Even if we don’t end up working together, you’ll still get some great free stuff to get you going on your own.

And share with other business owners, entrepreneurs, and smart people you’d like to help. Don’t be surprised when it helps your business grow even more. Serving others this way can do amazing things. Tell them you know a guy with”

Music and movement - So, that's what "in the groove" meant

Music and movement – a match made in Heaven

I’ve been reading about how people 65 and over tend to fall down more. What?! Yeah, a Harvard Health Publishing report from back in 2011 said “one of every three senior citizens suffers at least one fall during the course of a year.” And the report included a little bit of interesting and encouraging information about music and movement. Fortunately I don’t have to be concerned with this for at least…another 15 minutes or so.

Music and movement ain’t all in your head.

I’ve been sharing some information about how music, and even the vibrations from it, can do amazing things. Especially for your mental well-being. But better mental and emotional health aren’t the only benefits of more music in your life. It might also keep you from falling.

That same Harvard Health report said there was a study of “134 men and women 65 and older who were at risk of falling.” And keep in mind, these were people who didn’t have any major issues with walking. Half the volunteers were taught how to walk and move to the rhythm of songs. The other half did their usual routines.

After only six months the music movers could move around better and had better balance than the people who hadn’t changed their routines. And apparently the music group fell 54% fewer times.

So, I guess there were still some falling. But a lot less than the more sedentary group.

And a side benefit of music and movement is that it apparently improves the mobility of people dealing with Parkinson’s disease.

Of course, as a lifelong musician, I love to learn about so many hidden benefits and potential benefits to listening to, playing, and moving to music. But so many of the studies and reports I read include some sad sentences. Like “We’re not sure why this is happening?”  or  “Science is only scratching the surface on how this could occur.”  and the saddest lines like, “Did our evolutionary ancestors know about dancing and health?”

Music is like the rest of human existence.

It’s part of an amazingly complex design from an infinitely brilliant Designer.

If that’s not true, then I’m just a silly fool who’s liable to fall down any minute. But if it IS true (and it is)…

I’ll be dancing and singing forever
In the place where all music began.
And even with a crown, I’m never falling down.
Trusting God is in my masterplan.

Every good boy does fine is a favorite mnemonic of mine

Every good boy does fine. Well…

Not really. But if you ever studied music and how to remember the notes in a musical staff, you probably know what I’m talking about. Look at musical staff paper. And you’ll see it has 5 lines and 4 spaces. Music teachers used to share the mnemonic, Every Good Boy Does Fine, to help students remember the E, G, B, D, and F on the lines. Then there was the FACE in the spaces.

Every good boy does fine is more than just an easy way to remember notes.

Now, I might not be the sharpest mind on the planet (Of course, that implies I might be, too. But that’s another issue for another time). But when I read articles, spread around this here thang called the world wide web, about how to keep your mind sharp, I notice something right away.

They all tend to include a lot of self focus.

And that’s not evil. But it does tend to lead toward, gasp…do I dare say it…selfishness. Like in several graphics for mental alertness I saw today. They all included this recommendation: “Believe in yourself.” And, in an odd way, that sort of connects with the Every Good Boy, etc. mnemonic.

Because if you’ve lived on this planet for more than just a few years, you know every good boy (or girl) does not do fine. Not much of the time anyway.

But I sort of veered off the track there. I really started out to talk about how to stay mentally sharp. And, as you might guess, I’m a big proponent of using music to help you do that.

I’ve read quite a few reports that talk about how important it is to keep your neurons firing. Because neurons stay connected that way. It’s a lot more complicated than that. And a lot more complicated than I want to go into right now. But the main thing is…you keep your neurons firing with repetition and consistency.

So, there’s nothing better than music to maintain healthy neurons.

Because in order to get better at music you gotta do a lot of repetition. And you gotta do it consistently. You might not believe (although I’m not sure why) how many hours I spent working on my singing voice in high school. Way, way more hours than just in the classes. And I’m totally confident all that repetition and consistency is why I’m still so…so…uh…never mind. I’ll come back to that.

In the meantime, sing a song for your brain.
Don’t be shy when you sing out the refrain.
Play guitar or play a harp. Just keep playing and stay sharp
‘Cause your future self has so much to gain.

Music communications with fewer complications

Do music communications have to be complicated?

So, this young woman wrote about the differences between a music therapist and a “glorified performer.” That was in the headline, so her bias showed from the very beginning. And there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, I appreciate her taking a stand. But after reading her article, I wondered why so many music therapists believe music communications have to be so darn complicated.

Music communications with fewer complications

Maybe because music communications sounds so serious.

And it CAN be. I have no problem with that. But I don’t think a musician has to feel like a “glorified performer” just for wanting to help people, without a music therapy certification.

The young woman who wrote the article (and who will remain nameless and linkless to protect her identity) said performing and therapy are two entirely different processes. But I don’t believe they’re mutually exclusive. She said “While performing, I try to communicate some form of message to an audience and am focused on how I am communicating that through sound. The focus is internal and musical.”

And that’s great. It’s a good mindset for staying on top of your performance. She added…

“My thoughts tend to be along the lines of:

  • “Can I hit that high note right now?”
  • “Am I thinking about the emotion of the song and living it?“

Then she said, as a music therapist, she focuses on the person in front of her. Because she wants to be able to assess them so she can provide “receptive music techniques.” an watch their reactions. And she said she’s thinking about whether they’re in pain. Or if they’re anxious, sad, lonely, confused, and agitated.

That all makes sense to me. But I believe you can do both. Perform with thoughts of giving your best performance. And observe reactions so you can do more of what’s working. Again, I certainly don’t think they’re mutually exclusive. In fact, I think performance and therapy should be synergistic.

And I get it how music therapists are trained to look for therapeutic results.

But their training is in areas like psychology, neurology, and the systems of the body. Nothing wrong with that. But none of it teaches them how to care for and love their neighbor.

I’ve seen who knows how many medical professionals who know their stuff. But you can see they just don’t care about the health and well-being of their patients.

No matter how well you’re trained in music communications, music therapy, or any other health-related field, it doesn’t make you a caring person. That comes from somewhere else. And here’s a hint: it ain’t you. Or me.

A little music therapy
Can be so good for you and me.
But something else has to be there.
It’s simple, tender, loving care.

Music immunity is good for your community

Is there such a thing as music immunity?

It sort of depends on your definition of music immunity. But there appears to be quite a bit of significant research that backs up how beneficial it is to listen to and play music.

Music immunity is good for your community

And I’m calling it music immunity because I like the sound of it.

(See what I did there?)

Anyway…there’s a peer reviewed journal, Brain Behavior and Immunity, that deals with (get yourself a cup of coffee, this is gonna be a long word) psychoneuroimmunology. Just a nine syllable way of saying they study the connections between psychology, your nervous system, and your immune system.

And according to them there are some pretty cool effects of listening to music. At least potentially. But some of their research shows how music can directly have a positive effect on biomarkers and hormone levels.

Immunoglobin A, an antibody that plays a crucial role in the immune function of mucous membranes, seems to really enjoy music. And that’s especially cool. Because your body needs optimum function of those mucous membranes in order to be able to fight off pesky germs.

Sure, this isn’t all that important right now. But who knows? It might come in handy some day. (Do you detect a bit of tongue-in-cheek, there?)

Oh yeah, some more of that research seems to show a reduction in cortisol levels by listening to music. You know what that’s connected to, right? Yeah, belly fat. Music and less belly fat? Who knew?

I’ll tell you right now, I’m not up on drugs. I don’t know the names of many of them, or what they do, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. But apparently there’s an anti-anxiety drug called diazepam. And another study by the Journal of Music therapy led to one of their researches saying music can be as effective as diazepam in dealing with anxiety.

And check out these benefits for chemotherapy patients…

Another part of that study showed how listening to 20 minutes of live music had several measured benefits. Like reduced anxiety, fear, fatigue, relaxation, and diastolic blood pressure.

Now, I don’t know what type of live music they listened to. But I’m guessing it wasn’t heavy metal or rap. And maybe that’s just my thinly disguised bias showing. But I doubt it.

Anyway…

Here’s my recommendation. During these disconnected times, listen to more music. And, of course, stay tuned to my The Power of God’s Love Podcast. Because I share music on there. But I don’t rap or metallize my songs. Just so you know.

Listen to music to build
Your immune system; stay fulfilled.
And what could it hurt, to attend a concert
By someone who is musically skilled?

Stay tuned,

Human connection with a slight objection

Human connection can be a healthy thing

But human connection isn’t always healthy. Especially if and when it takes you away from logic and reason. I’ve been studying the potential healing effects of music, lately. And unfortunately I see too many music therapists and researchers emphasizing the power of self. And most of them only give a slight nod to design, calling it “spirituality.”

Human connection with a slight objection

And that’s where human connection fails miserably.

Like in an article I just read that talked about jazz musicians improvising a tune instead of playing a composition. The research showed how “the activity deactivated the brain areas of self-monitoring and judgment activity.” And they thought this was a good thing, of course. But it’s not.

When you don’t self-monitor or exercise good judgment, you’re asking for more than you bargained for.

That same article talked about community drum circles, ukulele circles, and singing activities as ways to connect as a group through music. And they added, “Even if you feel low in energy, just being in the space where music is being created can enliven you.”

I agree with that. But then they added, “This takes your mind off fear, doubt, and worry: you can’t think while you’re playing music.”

And I agree with the first part about taking your mind off fear, doubt, and worry.

That’s an awesome side effect of listening to and playing music. But I disagree with the second part. Yes, you CAN think while you’re playing music.

I spent over a quarter of a century as a professional musician. Yeah, I actually made a living at it. And I can tell you, from all those years experience, I was thinking while playing songs. Most of the time my thoughts were focused on each song, how to vocalize it, and what to give the crowd next.

But often, I’d think about events of the day. Or what route I’d take on my drive to the next job. And even sometimes about what I gonna eat or who I’d talk to during my break.

It’s sad how deeply the idea of focusing on your emotions and feelings has permeated the arts. I’m not emotionless and unfeeling. But I know it’s so much more important to apply logic and reason to your life. At least if you want to actually solve problems. And not just acknowledge and feel them.

That’s why I’m focusing on the healing potential of music with a designed and eternal perspective.

Because there might be some others doing that, but if they’re out there, they’re being swamped by the new agey, humanist, self-empowered “gurus.”

I’m no guru from some whoo whoo who’s who.
But I DO know maybe a thing or two
Why music is so good for me and you.
It’s because God designed what it could do.

Healing sounds in your own playgrounds

Ever thought about what healing sounds like?

“What healing sounds like? Don’t you mean what it LOOKS like, Tony?” Nope. I’m not into looks, when it comes to healing. Because healthy people don’t always look healthy. And sick people don’t always look sick. Know what I mean? Anyway…I’m talking about another benefit of music and health. This time it’s active instead of passive.

Healing sounds are even better when you play.

And by “play” I mean play the sounds yourself. Imagine that. Being a participator is better than being a spectator. At least when it comes to your health. Here’s what I mean…

I read some research that said making music, even just for fun, can actually flip your genetic switches. And it can even “reverse your own genomic stress signature.” That’s a fancy way of saying you can reduce stress by playing music. There’s even a music therapist who came up with her own healing drum kit.

Beat away stress? Yeah, that sounds pretty good to me.

When you think about it, you’re designed with all kinds of rhythm in your own body. From your heartbeats, to your sleep cycle to brain waves. And even the rhythm of your neurotransmitters firing…when they’re working the right way. One article I read about the everyday chemical compounds of life said this…

“Excitatory neurotransmitters cause neurons to fire ‘action potentials’ essentially an electrical signal…”

There’s that “action” stuff again.

Elgielene and I were talking this morning, during our coffee wake up time, about how much rhythm and motion are going on in your body all the time. Even when you’re relaxing, motionless, on the couch or in bed. Your heart is still beating out that rhythm. And your blood is flowing back and forth through your veins. And we can’t forget all those neurotransmitters.

Especially the ones that stimulate the production of dopamine. That’s the only dope I endorse, by the way. Because it’s the feel-good, healing hormone you need.

And I believe your healing hormones, and the way they can be turned on with music, are in your body by design.

So, I’m not like all those other “new agey” and mythical, mystical “gurus” who drum up ideas about your own “powers”. I give credit where credit is due.

And your healing powers don’t come from you.
They come from God who designed them to
Work even when you’re not thinking about
What you can and cannot live without.
So beat out a rhythm to heal today.
And be thankful God has made you this way.

Vibrational sound therapy sounds pretty good to me

Is Vibrational Sound Therapy Good For You?

A sister-in-law of mine (I have 6 of them) is dealing with some serious cancer issues right this minute. She’s in a hospital, here in Colorado Springs. And she’s already gone through an extensive round of chemotherapy and radiation. You know how it goes. Hair loss. Ghostlike complexion, etc. She didn’t want to go the more holistic route my wife suggested. Because she doesn’t feel she has the willpower to stick with it. So, for her, vibrational sound therapy wouldn’t have even showed up on her radar.

Play

But could vibrational sound therapy help?

Well, maybe. I just read something interesting about a French composer/biologist and another French biologist. They conducted a laboratory study using low-volume (about 30-40 decibels) acoustic sound on uterine cancer cells. And they pointed a camera on the petri dishes where the cells were.

The results, according to them, and caught on camera showed how the sounds disintegrated the cells.

And you’ll never guess what they said the most effective and interesting sound was. So, I’ll just tell you. It was a human voice. And they said a human voice would “explode” those cancer cells in only nine minutes.

After that, those two French biologists worked with a couple of women diagnosed with breast cancer. And they had some more amazing results. I’m not going into that now. But the doctors wrote how “the cancer cells show evidence of cell nuclei incapable of maintaining their structure as the sound wave frequencies attack the cytoplasmic and nuclear membranes.”

They came up with a theory that “tumor cells aren’t in resonance with the human body.” Which means it appears uninterrupted resonant sound can destabilize and destroy cancer cells.

Wow. The right sounds might be good cancer fighting tools. Even if it doesn’t work for everyone, it’s certainly a much safer first choice than chemo and radiation.

And sound and light are much more likely to develop hope than those harsh treatments. Watch this…

Could good vibrations help you heal
In some ways medicine cannot?
Well, if they can, it just makes sense.
Sounds come from God’s own train of thought.

Symphony number 9 is a favorite of mine

Have you ever heard symphony number 9?

But not just any symphony number 9. I’m talking, of course, about the one by Beethoven. My favorite composer. And this symphony is one of my favorites of his.

Symphony number 9 is a favorite of mine

“But what’s the big deal about symphony number 9?” you ask.

And I’m glad you asked. Here’s the deal.

I’m a singer/songwriter (just in case you didn’t already know that). So, the idea of deafness is about as scary a thought as I can imagine. And the reason I bring it up is because I’m listening to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

And he composed this beautiful music when he was nearly totally deaf.

And that’s maybe one of the most inspiring examples of how you should remember you’re an overcomer. Or at least you should be.

Don’t allow fears (and those who spread them) rob you of your force. Instead, be a Beethoven. Make a daily note to yourself to stay composed.

By the way, staying composed, with music like Symphony number 9, can also help reduce heart rate (if yours needs it…mine doesn’t) and help prevent hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Because it matches the natural rhythms of your body. So, your body actually physically responds to it.

I recently read about a study, back in 2013, that said heart disease patients can get great results with music. It said those who exercised and listened to music they enjoyed for 30 minutes every day had the highest rate of heart function improvement.

Yeah, music and exercise can make your heart health rise.

And I read about some Finnish, American, and British researchers (I’ll call ’em the FAB team) used a technique called sonification to “hear” how certain proteins function. Sonification occurs when composed music and mathematical algorithms interconnect. Those researchers believe “listening” to those proteins, and how they work, might help doctors discover and treat diseases more effectively.

Who knew?

Well, it’s just a somewhat educated guess on my part, but I’ll bet the Inventor of music knew.

The healing power of music is still being discovered. And some research might prove to be wishful thinking. But I’m not discarding the potential. Because I know how much God loves us. And it would be just like Him to put healthful benefits in something you can’t even see.

So, my recommendation for you today is…listen to some music that matches the natural rhythms of your body. Because you can’t beat it. (see what I did there?)

Your mind and your body will thank you
For the sounds and potential healing.
And what better way to be healthy?
And what else could be more appealing?
Except maybe living forever
With the One who invented the way
We can all live better with music.
Yeah, that’s more beneficial, I’d say.

Wisdom comes with age said the somber sage.

Thank goodness wisdom comes with age

Because I’ve got some of that, for sure. “Which one is he talking about, Marge?” Well both, of course. Since wisdom comes with age…and I’m not getting any younger…well, you get it. Right?

Wisdom comes with age said the somber sage.

“If wisdom comes with age, why aren’t there more wise old people, Tony?”

A-ha! You see the problem. Yeah, there are a lot of old people who don’t act or even seem all that wise. So, that might just be an old saying that doesn’t hold up so well. And it might mean that “wise”, for some…

I’ve written almost 120 articles on the topic of wisdom. So, some might think I know a thing or two (or 120) about it. And I do. But not because I’m so amazingly wise. Because I have something else going for me.

Humility.

I’ve been able to deflate my own ego enough to recognize I’m wretched, poor, naked, and blind without the love and grace of God. Sure, I’m an amazing specimen. But only because God gave me everything I have that’s worth having.

And yes, I can say I’m an amazing specimen (Does the mean Italian astronaut?) and still be humble. Because I’m acknowledging the wonderful handiwork of the One who created me. That same handiwork shines in you, too, by the way. Yeah, you’re also an Italian astronaut…er…amazing specimen.

But here’s a key point.

As you and I grow older…and in spite of some wild claims on the internet, there’s no reversing of the age process…wisdom can be a beneficial byproduct of life. But it’s not guaranteed. You don’t just get wisdom by getting older. It’s gotta be gotten. Get it? Good. Then, get it.

Open up your eyes and be wise.
Everybody dies, so be wise.
To anyone who tries, there’s not a better prize.
So, open up your eyes and be wise.

Fears mount and they still don't count

Have you noticed how fears mount?

Especially nowadays with so many more media sources. I was just making my usual trip through a couple of my news apps. And I already saw multiple headlines or subheads that included something like, “Fears mount as…” or “…amid rising fears.” Seems like lots more people are more scareder than ever.

Fears mount and they still don't count

Should fears mount? Or do I even need to be worried about it?

See what I did there? But really…is fear the right response when things get tough? Or even a little out of control?

I guess it depends on who you trust to tell you the truth.

And it’s probably more than a little important to get enough wisdom to know when you’re being lied to. But where do you go for wisdom?

I remember Aesop’s Fables from when I was kid. You might recall the story of the tortoise and the hare (turtle and rabbit for you younger types). It was a story of speed and agility versus steady efforts. And, like in all Aesop’s Fables, there was the “moral of the story.” Which, in that case, was…slow and steady wins the race.

So, maybe Aesop would be a good source for wisdom. Hmm…maybe not. At least not on a level for keeping your wits when everyone else around you is losing theirs. Of course, that would only be half as harmful to a lot of them.

Anyway…

Instead of me going through a lot of potential sources of wisdom, I’d like to recommend my first choice.

And if you’ve followed my writings and podcast for any length of time, I’m sure you know where I’m headed. Yep, the Bible. But before you dismiss my suggestion I dare you to find fault with these words…

“Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head ian ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you.”

I’ve written quite a bit about the importance of wisdom. Because it’s way more valuable than just a bunch of head knowledge. Wisdom is the only way to sort through information and relieve fear. And you can’t find a better source for it than your Creator.

But trusting in your Maker is up to you.
It’s not something He’ll ever make you do.
Just know, if you don’t, then one day real soon
You might sing the words to a different tune.

Stay tuned,

Freedom or security

Freedom or security? That’s the wrong question

Lately I’ve been seeing that old freedom or security question and issue popping up. And it still makes me sad for America that so many people think that’s an either/or question. Because the words are actually bound together in their meaning. Free people should seek to remain free. Because there’s so much security in freedom.

Play

Freedom or security

When I was a kid, freedom or security wasn’t a question the grownups were asking.

And before you say, “Uh gee, Tony. You were a kid. How would you know what grownups were talking about?” let me say this. No, I was fairly naive to a lot of the grownup problems. But that’s part of what made America so much more fun back then. And safe.

Because, when I was a kid, the adults could still easily remember how hard America had fought to secure freedom. For us. And for the rest of the world. World War II was still a fairly fresh, and harsh, memory. The men and women who went overseas to fight and die for freedom understood, completely, there was no real security at the time.

But they also understood, completely, how winning the fight for freedom would re-establish security.

And now, people so easily lay down even the most basic freedoms. In the name of “security.” But ironically, sadly, and obviously, the country isn’t a more secure place to live. I haven’t felt less free or less secure in my whole life.

There’s basically no wisdom in positions of leadership. And sides are drawn on just about any weird idea or concept other than right and wrong. So much of it sounds like little children. “Nuh uh. Uh-huh. Oh yeah! I’m tellin’ on you!”

Generations have been raised in government schools. So, there’s been a steady decline in logic and reason. And they’ve been replaced by feelings and desires. Not good foundations for rock solid decisions.

“Wow, Tony. You sure know how to pick things apart. So, how would you make it better, Mr. SmartyPants?”

Well, I’d start by not making requirements for security that include giving up rights and freedoms. And I don’t mean there’d be no sacrifices. Of course there would be. Just like there were back in the 40’s during World War II. But those kinds of sacrifices don’t infringe on your right to life, liberty, and free enterprise.

And, of course, that ties into what we’re dealing with right now. If you own or run a business, I’m sure you’re keenly aware of what the lack of free enterprise can do. But even more than financial crunches, a lack of free enterprise can cost human lives. And those losses are every bit as important as losses from disease. But even sadder. Because they could have and should have been avoided.

So, as you think about security
And what it means, exactly, to be free,
Just imagine life in slavery.
It can’t live with freedom, mutually.
You were given life and liberty
By the only Truth that sets you free.
And I hope you’ll take the time to see
Freedom IS the best security.

Love and logic while I'm feeling pedagogic

Love and logic – like oil and water?

OK, here’s the million dollar question. What’s the number one thing love and logic have in common? (cue the Jeopardy music) No, it’s not that they both start with L. I said “number one thing.” Any other guesses? Alright Timmy, now you’re just being a smart-aleck. It’s not because they both start with LO either. OK, I’ll tell you…

Love and logic while I'm feeling pedagogic

Love and logic are both immaterial.

Oops. That might be confusing. Because some might think I’m trying to say they don’t mean anything. But that would be the “first” definition of the word, immaterial. The second definition means they’re both spiritual rather than physical. Or if the word, spiritual, bothers you, then let’s say they’re both intangible.

In other words…they ain’t touchable.

But nothing, in your life, touches you more than love. And nothing makes more sense than logic (aka “reason”, the second part of my ongoing theme here on TonyFunderburk.com)

So, since love and logic can’t be detected by any of your five senses, what good are they for survival? Well, first, I dare you to try to survive without them. And second, mere survival pales in comparison to the possibility of thriving…and even thriving forever.

“But what if I don’t believe in forever, Tony?”

Hmm…that’s not logical. Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Well, there’s nothing in this world that can force you to believe in forever. But, even if you don’t believe in that, and even if you don’t believe in God, wouldn’t it be cool if you could live forever? Surely you can admit the idea of living forever in paradise is appealing. Right?

I mean, just imagine it for a little bit. Every day you could live out your abilities and dreams. And you’d know you’re not gonna reach an end to your life one day. So, you wouldn’t have to worry about getting old. No aging, aching joints, diminished eyesight and hearing, dental problems, fallen arches, etc. etc. etc.

Most importantly…no more death and dying.

Here’s the thing. You know love exists. And you know logic does too. But hopefully you also know they couldn’t have evolved. It’s sensible to say logic created matter. But it makes no sense to say the reverse could happen.

And how would love have benefited the earliest evolving creatures? Basic survival doesn’t require it.

So, here’s what makes sense. Human life has love and logic (Rhyme and Reason) because a loving and reasonable Creator designed it this way. But He also knew that for love to be real it has to be freely given. So, He created us with our own will.

You and I aren’t born without the ability to hate. That should be painfully obvious. Hatred is ubiquitous in this world. We can choose to hate…or love.

And the most logical choice is love.
Because it comes from the One, above,
But you do have a will and a choice,
And I know one day I will rejoice
If I see you there in that glorified air
Where material things don’t compare.
