Well, it’s December 2020. And it’s the best month of the year to end 2020 with. And not just because it’s both national egg nog month AND national impaired driving prevention month. Even that alone would make it super duper unique. But also because of its historical significance.

December is full of important days.

Like today, the first day of the month. This is Eat A Red Apple Day. And since an apple a day keeps the doctor away, there’s more importance to this day than ever before. Right?

And there are other important food days this month, too. Like tomorrow. One of my faves. It’s National Fritters Day. So take some of that red apple from today, add some walnuts, and make some apple fritters for tomorrow. Be prepared. And don’t let it sneak up on you.

But how about National Cookie Day on the 4th? My #1 fave. And there’s no specific cookie. So, it doesn’t matter what your choice is. Celebrate the day with a cookie made your way.

Oh yeah…the 9th is National Pastry Day. And that’s almost as important as Cookie Day. Because who isn’t obsessing over tasty sweets this month? C’mon…admit it. You’ve already Googled recipes, haven’t you?

And to prove my point just a bit further, the 15th is National Cupcake Day. Now, don’t even try to tell me you can resist celebrating that day. I’ll bet you’ve already got ingredients in the cupboard. Or you’ve got your favorite bakery on speed dial. (It’ll be our little secret)

But there’s even more important significance to this month than food.

Like, the two most historically significant birthdays in history are both in this month. I’ll talk more about those later. But for now, just realize, you’ve entered THE month of all months. A time when the world sees both the shortest and longest daylight days of the year.

It’s the month of Sagittarius (until the 21st) and Capricorn (the rest of the month). And the month of the Narcissus flower and the stones of tanzanite, turquoise, and zircon.

So, I hope this December finds you happy
And as healthy as you’ve earned the right to be.
I hope it helps you start your new year snappy
Fueled by blessings that you can and cannot see.

Stay tuned,

Last day of August and a cool wind gust

It’s the last day of August, in case you hadn’t noticed. And when I went outside, early this morning, there was a delicate, cool wind blowing. So, I checked my weather app, and it was 45 degrees. Considerably different than the previous nights. And the dry, cool air transported me back to my boyhood days.

Last day of August and a cool wind gust

When I was growing up, the last day of August was like a timer bell.

And it meant going back to school. But, unlike so many kids, I liked that. Because it also meant I’d be diving into new worlds of learning. And those first days of school, back in southern Texas were the most pleasant of the year. Autumn was the only time the temperatures were nice enough to comfortably keep the classroom windows open.

And there’s just something special about reading a new book to the sounds of birds chirping and squirrels chattering. Even as I write this, I can almost feel the breezes wafting through the windows. And the scent of new school books, erasers, ink pens, mimeographed papers, and magic markers.

Ah…if only I could time travel back to those halcyon days of high school…(*record scratch sound effect)

No way! I wouldn’t return to those idyllic school days for all the stolen money in politicians’ pockets. Not for all the tea in China or England. And not for all the ice in Iceland. (For whatever good that would do me.)

I got out of the public school system just in time.

And by the “skin of my teeth” as they say. Although why they say that makes little sense to me.

Anyway…

I was fortunate to be able to attend a school where morality still reigned. And the name of God was in every school assembly and most every sports event. Plus, we had no gender issues. Because guys wore pants. And girls wore dresses and skirts. Sounds unimaginable these days. But it’s true.

It’s interesting how I can be thinking of the last day of August, today, and before you know it, I’m talking about pants and dresses. But that’s just another cursory look at how awesome the human brain is designed.

And I thank God for the way I’m designed,
For the way my thoughts can be intertwined,
And how one, cool day can often remind
Me of how much God has done for mankind.

Stay tuned,

A new day to make hay with something to say

It’s a new day

So what! Big deal. A new day comes around every twenty-four hours. So, what makes this one any more special than all the others? And why do so many people try to pump you up with all this rise-and-shine nonsense?

A new day means you’re alive.

And you’re able to do something about your life. Even if it’s not much. You’re able to do something. Because you’ve been given another day of life. And that ain’t no small thing.

If you got up with a bad attitude this morning, go back to bed and shut up. Nobody wants to hear your complaining and whining. And if you got up feeling like the world owes you something and hasn’t paid up, you need a feeling detox. Because your toxic emotions don’t do anything positive for anybody. Least of all, you.

It doesn’t matter what you’re dealing with today. Because, as the old saying goes, this, too, shall pass. And the important thing to focus on is how you can serve someone else today. Emphasis on “someone else.” Not you.

And I promise you this…and it won’t happen suddenly…once you focus on serving others, your bad days will get better. Because you’ll do something to your soul. And I know it works because it’s designed to work.

Yeah, you were created for a day like this.

So, live like God loves you. And like He wants you to love others. Because He does.

I can’t wake up. It’s way too soon.
I’d rather sleep till this afternoon.
But dreams won’t come and eyes won’t close
And air won’t pass through this broken nose.
So, I’ll get up and write a bit
And chase a thought till I capture it
And write it down for you to read.
I hope you won’t think it’s just a screed,
Just boring words to muddle through
‘Cause that’s the last thing I’d want to do.
So, bear with me. We’re almost done
With all this nonsense and all this fun.
I think my nose has opened up.
A new day drifts from my coffee cup.

Mother's Day 2019

Mother’s Day 2019

Each year I share a list of things moms do to earn their adulation on their special day. Mother’s Day 2019 is no different…except you can also hear the audio version of this on my The Power of God’s Love Podcast. Otherwise, thanks again Mom. And thanks again moms.

Mother's Day 2019

To all of you ladies who “took one for the team”as you”

  • Withstood the months of pregnancy
  • Withstood the pains of childbirth
  • Fed your babies when they cried at 3 a.m.
  • Fixed “boo boos”
  • Kissed away pain
  • Hugged away frowns
  • Cooked breakfasts, made lunches, and prepared dinners
  • Washed clothes even after laundry was all done
  • Taught truth, hope, and love”and readin’, writin’, and “˜rithmetic
  • Fought tangled hair, torn pants, and missing shoestrings
  • Remembered birthdays with just the right proportion of chocolate icing to vanilla ice cream
  • Listened to stories of triumph, tragedy, and utter despair (mostly from teenage girls)
  • Made or bought costumes for every goofy event imaginable
  • Went to plays, sporting events, and music presentations”cheering for that one child who was obviously the natural born talent
  • Brought the “something borrowed”or “something blue”to the bride-to-be just at the right time
  • Danced the mother/son dance with the groom who had been her dragonslayer only “weeks ago”it seems
  • Made special homemade desserts for the kids and grandkids when they came over for Thanksgiving
  • Brought an elegant grace to the process of aging
  • Made us believe there’s a forever, a God who loves us, and a knowledge that we’ll have eternity in paradise

Thanks moms, for everything you’ve done, you’re doing now, and ever will do to make sure your kids are loved.

Thankful Thoughts

Tony Funderburk Posted on November 28, 2013 by TonyApril 4, 2024

Well, obviously a lot of Americans are having thankful thoughts today, and I’m certainly no exception.

I just did a quick search for the word “thanksgiving” in the Bible, and I found 40 results. From Leviticus to Revelation I found men full of need, needs being met, and thanksgiving to God. True Thanksgiving isn’t found merely in a bountiful table of food, or being with friends and family for the day. No, true thanksgiving can only be to God. After all…if it wasn’t for Him, no one on the planet would be on the planet. And there really wouldn’t be anything at all to be thankful for or to.

So…on this special day we Americans set aside and call “Thanksgiving” I’d like to say how thankful I am to have so many blessings in my life…

  • A wife and helpmate who loves, cares, and nurtures
  • You, for reading my words and listening to my music
  • Digital tools that make my work so much easier to create and share
  • A very nice roof over my head
  • An unquenchable thirst for knowledge and wisdom
  • And most of all…God…who made a way for me to live eternally in paradise

Those are just a few of my thankful thoughts today. My blessings outnumber my trials and tribulations, and I pray that you can say that for yourself, too. Now, I’d like to share the lyrics to an older song of mine. They mildly express the joy in my heart…

I Can’t Hide It

Down in my heart; down deep in my heart
Is a place where no one ever goes,
But that’s about to stop; I know it’s gonna stop
“˜Cause I’ve been changed by You, and I know it shows.

There’s a smile on my face…
I can’t hide it.
My feet quickened their pace…
I can’t hide it.
You have opened the door
To my poor heart once more,
And it’s You I live for…I can’t hide it.

You listen to me; listen closely to me…
I wanna rise up from ashes of defeat.
I need Your grace; I need all of Your grace
“˜Cause I know it’s what makes me feel complete.

 chorus…

I had always worked things out inside,
And then I saw my foolish heart had lied.
Now I have my chance; my only chance…
Not make believe; not a shadow dance.

chorus…
