Reward You Openly

When you do a good deed, or charitable deeds,
do you want someone to reward you openly?

If you answered yes to that question, who would you prefer to reward you…and what would you like as your reward? If you’re a Christian, I hope you agree that it’s important to know what God says about giving. And if you have a red letter edition of the Bible, open it to Matthew 6. What you’ll discover, in verses 1-4, is that Jesus says you should not tell everyone when you’re doing charitable deeds…or what they are. In fact, He explicitly says “But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly“.

It was important to Jesus that His followers understood this…important enough for Him to include it in His written word. And the topic of charitable deeds was important enough to be included with a list of these other topics:

  • Murder, Adultery, Divorce
  • Oaths, Retaliation, Love
  • Prayer, Fasting, Wealth, and
  • Judging

That’s a pretty serious list…right?

Jesus knew these were things each and every person would deal with in life…from one perspective or another. So He made sure to give us His (and His Father’s) perspective. And whose perspective has the most wisdom? His!

Jesus wants your giving to come from your heart. He wants it to be about loving your neighbor as yourself, serving your fellow man, just plain ol’ helping out when someone needs it. He doesn’t want your giving to be about how good a giver you are. He knows when your focus is on what a good giver you are, your tendency is to focus on numbers and rewards…not loving your neighbor. And all you need do is read the stories in the Bible, or read the history of any country or civilization, and you’ll see it always ends up that way.

If you’re in a good financial position, and you have extra to give, pass it around as much as you cheerfully can. That’s awesome. But please don’t do it and tell everyone you did. Don’t mention it to anyone. Of course, you can claim it on your taxes. There’s nothing wrong with that. You’re just following governmental policies. But you’re not making a big deal of it. Let your giving be done in secret. And if there is any telling, let it be done by someone else. Trust that Jesus meant it…and that He knew it was true when He said God will reward you openly. It may not be until you’re in Heaven, but it WILL be.

Are you giving in secret? If not, will you trust Jesus and begin to give in secret? I believe your blessings will be richer.

Stay tuned,

God Hears You

Do you believe God hears you when you pray?

If you’d like to be sure He does, I have some good news for you. You CAN know. For example, there was a guy named John, who wrote this in the Bible: “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” That seems pretty straightforward. The verse contains a qualifier “ask anything according to His will”, but it nevertheless assures you that God hears you. Still not convinced? Need more? OK…

…what if God himself told you that He hears you? Would you believe and trust that He does? Well, guess what? He DID tell you. Your Creator said it like this: “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” Now, you don’t actually see the words telling you He hears you, but could God do what you ask, if He couldn’t hear you? Before I go any further I’d like you to know you can’t just pray to God for anything you want and expect Him to hear you and give it to you. He’s not a magician, and He’s not Santa Claus. The verse I just quoted, from Matthew, was for a particular group of people in a particular time with a particular set of circumstances. I won’t go into that right now.

But please realize the principle is the same. God hears you.

Depending on your perspective, this next thing I’m gonna tell you will either sound harsh…or completely sensible. Here it is…

…there is only 1 true, living, loving God. When you deal in reality, not dreamy-eyed self-focused fantasies, you realize there can only be 1 God. The very definition of “God” makes that true. There can only be 1 supreme being above all others. After all…if every being is “supreme”, then no one is. Think about it.

Since there can only be 1 true, living, loving God you owe it to yourself to discover who He is. Here are some examples of who He isn’t:

  • you
  • allah
  • mohammed
  • confucius
  • buddha
  • the whole of creation

The 1 true, living, loving God of the Bible is the only one who can give you eternal life. But He won’t force it on you if you don’t want it. He requires one thing from you, in order to receive eternal life, and that’s this…ask. Ask Him to come into your heart and save you, change you, and make you whole. Ask with a humble and repentant heart. When you acknowledge you’re sorry for the things you’ve done to others and to yourself, God hears you. And the angels rejoice.

So this Christmas season why not get the gift that keeps on giving forever…salvation. Jesus already paid for it. And if you’ve already gotten yours, pass it on. Tell others about it. When God hears you talking about His Son, He’s well-pleased. Will you?

Larger Than Life

Is it possible to live larger than life? It depends on where your definition of life takes you. If you believe your time, here on Earth, is all you’ll ever have, then no. You’ll never live larger than life. But if you know there’s an eternity waiting for you…provided by your Creator…then the answer’s yes. And when you know and understand how life is much more than the material things you can gather, your acquire a much larger (and more important) perspective.

Larger Than Life

Recently I’ve been sharing lyrics to songs I never completed or composed. Today, I’d like to share some more non-song lyrics. I wrote this in November of 1988. Back then I was looking at where the United States was headed, and I didn’t like the direction. Sadly, the country has taken turns for the worse since then. If you disagree, I’d love to hear from you. Do you believe our country and our world are better off now than we were in the past? If so, please show me…because I believe there are far too many people who don’t realize that life is…

Larger Than Life

We live in a greed land”take more than we need land.
We go for the gusto”creating a dustbowl.
A media earful”is leaving us fearful.
It may come to haunt us”someday doesn’t want us.

More money, more persona”everyone’s a prima donna.
Can’t we understand that it’s larger than life?
Another car and another diamond”
The way we take is like a crime, and
Can’t we understand that it’s larger than life?

We’re living much faster”we flirt with disaster.
We use our resources as conquering forces.
We don’t hear the drumming”the enemy’s coming.
We still have a Savior”let’s change our behavior.

More money, more persona”everyone’s a prima donna.
Can’t we understand that it’s larger than life?
Another car and another diamond”
The way we take is like a crime, and
Can’t we understand that it’s larger than life?

There’s so much more than just the here and now.
This isn’t nearly all there is.
But there are too many here who will never know how
This isn’t nearly all there is”
Life is larger than life.

You should never say you are disabled

If you’re missing a finger, or a hand, or an arm, or a leg, there are many people who say you are disabled. They say you won’t be able to do anything for yourself. They also say people who were born with things like Down Syndrome are never going to be much use. I’m gonna share a video with you that proves those people wrong. In this video, you’ll see my friend, Greg. He was born without some of his fingers and one of his legs. And guess what he did. Well, I’ll let him tell you…

You should never say you are disabled.

After watching that, don’t you feel a lot differently about what it means to be disabled? I know I did when I watched it. When someone says you are disabled, it might mean they just don’t know either. So share this video with them. Share it with everybody you know. It’s an awesome thing to know just how much you can do…when you try. That goes for anybody. And it’s important that we let everybody try to do things for themselves.

Of course, if you are disabled, people should be willing to help.

But that doesn’t mean we should do everything for them because we don’t think they can do anything. If a guy who doesn’t have as many fingers as you can learn to type and be a writer…my goodness…don’t you think almost anything is possible?

There’s a place in the Bible where it says to love your neighbor as yourself. That’s a commandment from Jesus. You wouldn’t want somebody telling you that you couldn’t do something if you could. Would you? So, don’t do that to others. If you love your neighbor as yourself, you’ll help them be the best person they can be. Sometimes that means helping them to learn more. Sometimes that means you’ll let them have their own successes and failures. And all the time it means remembering what Jesus said.

If you’re somebody who’s missing an arm or leg or anything else…remember Greg. And remember you are disabled only if you believe you are. You may have to work harder than someone with all their arms and legs, but you can do it with God’s love.

No One Has Seen God

The Bible says “no one has seen God at any time“. Even though He’s invisible to us, He’s still more real than all of us put together. And even though you can’t see Him, you can still see what He’s like. Would you like to know how? OK, I’ll tell you…

…you love others as you love yourself.

Because you can’t say no one has seen YOU. Right?

Does that sound easy? It should, because it is. God makes things easy for us. But we seem to always make things harder than they need to be. God loves you so much, He came to earth and became a man to make up for all the times you do wrong things. While He was here on earth, He was known as Jesus. And Jesus talked about love…a lot. In fact, Jesus is the one who said you should love your neighbor as yourself. Why do you think love is so important to God? Here’s why…

…because when you love others, you won’t do bad things to them. You’ll want to do good things for them. And isn’t that more fun? Isn’t it nicer to see a smile on someone’s face than to see them crying? If you think about it, it doesn’t take much to make someone smile. Does it? Sometimes all you have to do is make a funny face, and you can make someone smile…or laugh. Maybe you’ve made your mom breakfast in bed for her birthday or Mother’s Day. Didn’t that make her smile? Pretty easy, huh?

Of course, sometimes you’ll meet someone who is very, very unhappy. Then, it’s a little harder to make them smile. But you can do it. You just have to show even more love. It make take a little more time, and it may take a little more effort, but you can do it. When you don’t give up, you’ll be showing them love like Jesus showed you. Can you imagine what happens then?

Well…even though no one has seen God, you’ll be showing what He’s like. His love can shine right through you into the faces and the hearts of other people you meet. Then, they might want to know Him like you do. And just think…you’ll be helping them to Heaven.

Do you think you could do that for someone today? If so, tell me about it. Here’s a rhyme to help…

I can show love to my neighbor.
And neighbors are all around.
When I show love to my neighbor,
They can go from lost to found.

Only For A Little While

Whether you’re going through life at the bottom of the totem pole…or you’re the king of the hill…remember, it’s only for a little while.

Don’t worry if you see others doing more or better than you. There’s almost always someone else doing less or worse. You just need to focus on being the best YOU you can be. That takes your whole life. But the good news is, you don’t have to do it alone. You can always lean on your Creator. Jesus has sent His Spirit to be with you through your whole journey here on planet Earth. How cool is that?! And you can talk to Him whenever you have anything bothering you…or even when you just want to tell Him thanks.

This life you’re living right now doesn’t last forever. So, don’t waste any of it thinking of ways to hurt others. Wouldn’t it be better to think of ways to help others? You never know when someone might need your hug, or your words, or your listening ears. They might think you’re THE one who understands them. And you can help them to discover they’re never alone. When you do, guess what else you’ll be doing…

…storing up treasures in Heaven. And not only for a little while.

Do you know what treasures in Heaven are? If so, send me a note and tell me. If not, ask your mom or dad…or even me. I’ll give you a hint: treasures in Heaven last a very long time.   🙂

It’s only for a little while our time here on the earth.
It’s only for a little while, it’s true.
No matter what you see and do while you are in this world
It’s only for a little while you do.

Before you go, share this link with everybody you know. Tell ’em to jump on the The TRUTH AND get some music and other fun stuff, for Fa-Ree.

A Ransom For Many

Ransom: a sum of money or other payment demanded or paid for the release of a prisoner – That’s a pretty good description of the ransom that was paid for your release. And mine. And everyone else’s. Your life is held prisoner in this fallen world. Your body is held prisoner to sin, and sin demands a ransom. And if the ransom isn’t paid, you’ll be killed and delivered into an eternal torment. Sounds just awful, doesn’t it? Well, you don’t need to despair.

Because the King of all creation already paid a ransom for many.

In fact, it’s been paid for all who want to be saved from that torment.

God has given every one of us the complete freedom to choose life with Him…or an eternal existence apart from Him. Here’s the kicker…you have to choose before your last breath here on earth. After that it’s too late. And don’t think you can remain neutral. Not choosing IS choosing…it means a choice that doesn’t include God.

Please don’t let that happen. If you feel like my Christian perspective is the fairy tale of simpletons, I implore you to dig deeper…deeper beneath your presuppositions about what the story of Jesus is all about. Go deeper and find faith, hope, and love you might never have known existed. Go deeper and discover The Love so great that the King of all creation was willing to take on human flesh, suffer indescribable torture, and die to pay a ransom for many who would love, believe, and trust in Him.

Find yourself in Jesus.

Excerpt from “The Way”

(listen to the song here)

And it came to pass one day on a mountain far away
That a soul was taken and a life forsaken
Because someone had to pay
For the heart of all mankind.
There was no untarnished mind.
So one life was spent Who was innocent,
But He left His Word behind…
