Wednesday encouragement with your blessing and consent

Here’s a little Wednesday encouragement

If it’s Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, just ignore this message. Because this is specially designed Wednesday encouragement. I won’t be responsible for results you get by attempting to use it on those other days.

“Why Wednesday encouragement, Tony?” you ask.

Well, I’m glad you asked because I’d like to expound with great profundity on that topic. And I’d love to illuminate the catacombs of your weary understanding and reasoning with wit, wisdom, and whimsy.

Either that, or I’d like to help take your mind off the vicious virus news.

Here in Colorado, we’ve been issued a “stay at home order” by someone calling himself a governor. And I know most of my readers and listeners are more the lemonade type rather than lemons type. But still, who doesn’t enjoy a little encouragement and entertainment in the middle of challenges?

So, that being said, I’d like to encourage you to take all the opportunity you’re being presented (aka being forced on you) and make some delicious, organic lemonade. With just the right amount of sweetness. And exhilarating tartness. And I hope you know I don’t mean it has to be actual lemonade. Right? Of course, I mean, this is a great time to put some extra time in on those parts of your life you’d like to improve. No matter what that is for you, this is, like I said, a great time of opportunity.

So many others out there will be looking for ways to “not be bored.”

And that’s a loser’s game. You and I can use our time to build up business. Or increase our knowledge. And even expand our abilities to serve others. Because that’s the only way you ever truly win in life.

Yeah, you’re gonna hear and see a lot of fear talk. A lot of speculation. But truth, right, and wrong don’t change. Here’s how I see it…

I hope you don’t mind if I don’t join in
With the people who just naysay.
I think you might find, if you just begin,
You might feel the very same way.
Life can get real dark like a starless night.
So, be glad when the Lord sends day.
Go and make your mark without fear or fright.
And you might as well start Wednesday.

Song of confidence because it just makes sense

Are you ready to sing a song of confidence?

Have you heard this quote? “The truth is still true even if no one believes it. And a lie is still a lie even if everyone believes it.” It makes total sense to someone who’s willing to use logic and reason, instead of feelings, when it comes to decision making. And it’s that kind of thinking that helps me sing a song of confidence in the face of doubt and fear.

Song of confidence because it just makes sense

Singing a song of confidence isn’t about shoving my head in the sand.

Far from it. I’m keenly aware of all the doubt and fear going on in America, and the world, right now. People want answers to this pandemic thing. And rightfully so. But you know where you shouldn’t look for answers right now? In speculative social media and news channels.

Speculation almost always goes in negative direction. At least when it comes to things like this public health scare. Conspiracy theories pop up everywhere. And sometimes from sources you thought would know better.

“So, who in the world are we supposed to trust, then, Tony?!”

Well, when all else fails…and even when nothing fails, trust God.

“But how am I supposed to trust God when He let this happen in the first place?”

Yeah, people actually ask hypocritical questions like that. Do you see the hypocrisy? Someone says they don’t believe or trust in God. Then, they lay blame at God’s feet. So, which is it? God doesn’t exist? Or if He does, He’s to blame for everything?

My confidence is in the mountains of evidence for God’s existence and love.

I know the one, true, living, loving Creator of all heaven and Earth will “do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, That the man of the earth may oppress no more.”

And if you’re reading this (or listening to it) with doubt, I recommend you don’t take my word for any of it. Especially if we’ve never met and you don’t know me from Adam. Because you’ll get much further along, in your quest for truth and trust, when you go to the source. Yeah, check out the Bible.

And if and when you can prove it’s wrong, then you can tell me where to get off.

But until then, I’m confidently in the hands of the most able Engineer. And this train is bound for glory.

I sing a song of confidence in what my God can do
And how His love can conquer all the fear in me and you,
But only if we choose His love and life and ask Him to.
I trust in God, and in His word, because I know it’s true.

Benevolent government was never ever Heaven sent

Ah, thank goodness for our
benevolent government.

Not! All around social media and news channels you’ll see talk of a “stimulus package.” And it’s supposed to throw gazillions of dollars out to “we, the people.” You’ll also see so-called “leaders” in congress debating over how much money and who to give it to. With lots of resistance from both republicans and democrats. It’s disingenuous to call it “care”. Because they’re only trying to figure out how to position their party (or individual selves) as THE point guards of a most benevolent government.

Benevolent government was never ever Heaven sent

Remember where your benevolent government got the money in the first place.

They stole it from taxpayers. Because government isn’t business. Just in case you thought it was, it’s important to know and understand government makes no goods for sale. It provides no services. And at best, it merely distributes information. Or more likely misinformation.

If it sounds like I’m bitter about it, there’s a good reason. Because I am. America was once a shining example of how freedom helps people flourish. But once the people realized they could “vote” for money to be taken from some and given to others, the genie was out of the bottle.

And we’ve never been able to get the genie back in.

And the genie is a meanie.

I’ll hammer this point in place one more time. Your government isn’t giving you anything even if they put a gazillion dollars into some sort of “stimulus package.” Because the only reason they have a bunch of bucks to spend is…they took it from you in the first place. So, they’re really only giving back what they shouldn’t have taken in the first place.

By the way. I’m not anti-tax. But I AM anti tyrannical tax. And a tax rate of 10% or higher is tyrannical. Anything on those levels is stealing. And God forbids stealing, in the ten commandments. Because stealing takes lives.

So before you cheer “your” politician…

Consider motives. And think about at least looking into how God would have us govern. My educated guess is He is not pleased with the so-called “system” we currently have.

If you love your neighbor as yourself, don’t steal.
The reason for this is a pretty big deal.
Even if you don’t believe in God, it’s true.
His enduring Truth is still for me and you.

Thermodynamics first law - I hope you'll see what I saw

OK, kids. Who can define the
thermodynamics first law?

Settle down. Settle down. And Susie, your hand is always up. Let someone else have a turn. Wow, everybody wants to answer. OK, Tommy, tell us. *ahem* “Yes, the thermodynamics first law says that all, or even part of, the energy in the universe is always constant.” Great answer, Tommy. You’ll get a gold star today. And what that means, class, is no mass or energy is being created or destroyed. It’s just changing forms.

And what else does that tell us about the thermodynamics first law?

“It means no energy…”

Heather, remember. We don’t just blurt out our answers. We raise our hands and take turns when called upon.

“Sorry, teacher.”

That’s OK. Why don’t you go ahead and finish your answer, Heather?

“OK. It means energy can’t make itself.”

Good answer, Heather. And if mass and energy can’t create themselves, then something or someone else did. Right? (whole class shouts, “Right!)

Ah, if only classrooms could look and sound like that. Well, small homeschooled classes can. But government schools can’t and don’t. Because scientific laws, like the first two laws of thermodynamics, show how mass and energy in the universe had to have been designed. And not by themselves. “Countless experiments have verified this.” And that implies a designer. But too many so-called “scientists” and “teachers” refuse to go where that leads.

The first two laws of thermodynamics point to God.

(Collective *Gasp!*)

Yeah, them’s the facts, Jack. If not even the inorganic parts of the universe couldn’t create themselves, could even more complex organisms create themselves? Like you and me, for example. Not very likely, right?

I’m not afraid to admit there’s a God. Because I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, He exists. And even better than that, I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, He loves me. Even though I’ve done nothing worthy of that love except show enough humility to believe and trust in Him.

Ironic how that simple act of humility, belief, and trust is too difficult for the majority of people on the planet.

Ironic. And sad.

You Just Don’t Get It

You wanna live the way you want to live.
And you wanna be your own king.
You think you’re wise enough to rule your world
And handle everything.
But how much happiness is in your life?
How many friends do you know
Who would give up their lives to give you yours?
Do you think any would show?

Well you idolize with your idle eyes.
Your body wants what it wants, and you let it.
You identify what you deify.
You’ll see the kingdom, but you just don’t get it.

You can’t submit to any higher will.
You’d rather live in the dark.
Well, you can have exactly what you say.
Look where you’re making your mark.

Chorus

Don’t you think you should think about it?
Do you know all there is to know?
There’s a choice; you can’t live without it.
You can be sure where you’re gonna go…

inst…chorus…repeat to end

Musical interlude was renewed by the mood

An old song with a musical interlude

Way, way back in my songwriting life, sometimes I’d worked on something “more than just a song.” And now, when I go through my old notebooks, I see how little I remember about those pieces. Like the words I’m gonna share to a song I composed in 1981. It even included a musical interlude. It sounds funny to me now. But I even wrote a note for it in the middle of my lyrics.

Musical interlude was renewed by the mood

Yeah, it sounds funny to say a song has a musical interlude.

But there it is. And I vaguely remember coming up with a lengthy composition to lead me out of the first half into the second. Of course, I enjoyed the whole process. It was invigorating to come up with all that lofty musical expression. But it really just boiled down to self-gratification. Because I can’t imagine anyone else enjoying my journey in to music la la land.

And as I looked at the lyrics again today, I saw how much I was working on the details. Words crossed out. Other words written above them. Even changing the first person to a third person. And a negative to a positive. Or vice versa. Then, there are my chord notations to remind me which key and which chords I was using. I used to commit everything to memory. Because I didn’t have my own recording setup or studio. And commercial studios were way to expensive to work on ideas.

I’m sharing this with you because it might help you avoid my mistake.

If you’re not a songwriter, you probably already stopped reading (or listening). But if you’re new to the wonderful world of songwriting, let me recommend something. Write songs. If you’re a true musical composer, then by all means, compose. Otherwise, write songs. And keep writing till you get good at it. Write and sing your way through the rough spots. And don’t look for something “more than just a song.” Just find yourself an audience and write songs for them. And you.

Not something like this…

The Flower of Your Life (Try to Unfold It)

I used to have a problem with saying what I felt.
My thoughts were always vague and never good.
And I would feel so empty like my well was running dry.
I’d try to make it perfect, but I never could.

And a voice inside me said,
“Open your eyes. Then you’ll realize
The song is in your heart and in your soul.
It’s waiting for someone to sing it.
It’s the flower of your life, and you had better try to unfold it.”

Musical interlude  🙂

Now I have no problem. I say just what I feel.
My thoughts are not so hard to understand.
I don’t know where they’ll take me, or if it’s anywhere at all.
I’ll try to make it perfect though I know I never can.

But the voice inside me says:
“Open your eyes. Then you’ll realize
The song is in your heart and in your soul.
It’s waiting for someone to sing it.
It’s the flower of your life, and you had better try to unfold it.”

Lizard brain on a train going down the drain

You don’t have a lizard brain

No reptilian brain. Or paleomammalian brain. And certainly no neomammalian brain. (Hey, maybe that’s where they got the Neo character in The Matrix…no, I don’t think so.) Before I go any further, I gotta ask. Why, in the name of godzilla, would you ever want to identify with a lower creature? Why would you ever, ever, ever want a lizard brain? I believe I know why many would.

Play

People who claim a lizard brain don’t love God.

Pure and simple. Or should I say not-so-pure and sad? Yeah, I think I’ll go with that. Anyway, it’s ironic, but not surprising, that anyone who wouldn’t want to identify with a Supreme being would feel comfortable identifying with a lower creature. And the dirty, broken world we live in is daily proof of where that worldview leads.

So, I keep seeing references to lizard brain popping up. From social media, to emails, to articles on websites. These misinformed, mistaken, and misaligned people actually believe in a triune brain. But they can’t begin to imagine believing in a triune God.

And that leads to saying things like certain parts of your brain are older than others. They actually believe humans started with a brain stem which was supposed to be “responsible for primitive survival instincts such as aggression and fear.” And that apparently “evolved” into a more complex brain that included the limbic system.

I’ve talked about the limbic system before.

They say the limbic system “is responsible for, among other things, our emotional bonding to other creatures–other humans such as family members and friends.” Get that? The limbic system is responsible. Not you or me. The system. So, if you’re incapable of showing your wife some love, dude, remember, it’s not you. Just say, “Hey babe, it’s not hardwired into my system.” She’ll understand.

Yeah, there’s the root problem. Responsibility. If you’re just another reptile, then you’re just a work in progress. And a work in progress is gonna have problems. Revisions are needed. The system requires more development. Just wait till version 100.0 is ready. Wow, humans will be, to coin an overused term, amazing. And maybe we can speed up the process by figuring out how to make that amazing hybrid human. You know, mostly human, but part robot/android.

Yeah, that’ll be cool.

Or how about this? How about looking deeper into your incredible brain. How about discovering all the untapped abilities you have in the exponentially more complex design that is YOU? And I know you’re exponentially more complex. Because you had an infinitely more complex Designer. By the way, He not only made you and your complex brain…he also made reptiles and their complex brains.

So, stop the lizard and start the wizard in your brain.

You were well-made with a wholly human brain.
So, don’t let your life go swirling down the drain
To a swamp of endless dread. Choose to raise your eyes instead
And behold the One who will remove your chain.

Vernal Equinox 2020 and I've got blessings plenty plenty

A Vernal Equinox 2020 suggestion

With all the other chatter on social media and news channels, I didn’t see anything pop up about Vernal Equinox 2020. At least, not till I went looking for it. In case you didn’t know, that’s when Spring “officially” begins. And this year’s beginning is around 9:50 tonight. (as I share this it’s March 19th) “So, why are you bringing it up, Tony?” Thanks for asking. And here’s why…

Vernal Equinox 2020 and I've got blessings plenty plenty

Vernal Equinox 2020 is another opportunity for me to share some lyrics. Duh!

What better reason to bring it up than that?! OK, all seriousness aside. I’m bringing it up this year because it’s a great time to pause and count your blessings. Yes, you do have blessings. And if you live in America, you have lots of blessings. For example, are you reading this on a some sort of electronic device? Yes? Then, boom! Blessing.

Should I go on? Or do you see where it’s going? I’ll bet you do. Write ’em down. And if you really take some time and think about it, you’ll soon discover you might not have enough time to list them all.

Regardless of what goes on out in the world today, you are blessed far beyond what you deserve. As for me, I’m grateful to the one, true, living, loving Creator of us all for my very existence. My relationship with Him helps me find the beauty in every season. And right now, here in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s Spring. And Spring is…

My Lover Today

Wind blowing through snowflake hills,
Ice castle all crumbling down.
Winter, in silence, is gone.
I watched it go with a frown.
Then, with a sigh, I remember saying good-bye
To Autumn the very same way.

Spring opens its eyes and mine.
There is a new warmth in the air.
Skies once clouded with flurries of snow
Now seem to be blue and fair,
And, with a sigh, Winter quickly passes me by,
And Spring is my lover today.

The seasons are lovely today”
Make my heart sing, make my thoughts cling
To wondering
If things will ever
Change me into Summer.
Let me be your flowers.
We can be a painting, if we don’t get sad and”

Then, with a sigh, I remember drying my eyes,
Watching all of the seasons pass me by.

What can you do when there's only one of you?

Oh well, what can you do?

When I was much younger, I wrote more songs with more questions in them. It hadn’t occurred to me before. But I was looking at some lyric files, today, and I saw that pattern form in the old lyrics. And the ironic thing is, it wasn’t because I didn’t have the answers. Because many times I actually did. In fact, they were as close as my next breath. So, even as I asked, “what can you do” I wondered if anyone would have the same answers.

What can you do when there's only one of you?

If you ever wonder what can you do during challenging times, this might hit a nerve.

There are tons of things you can do during times of doubt and drought. But none of them should include fear, focus on problems, or panic. And even though you might have questions, look for solutions. Ironically they most often appear when you stop trying to protect yourself and start serving others. And I’ll leave it there for you to think about.

Maybe you’re enjoying some quiet, thinking time right now. Or maybe you enjoy a good introspective set of lyrics. If so, here are the words to a song I wrote back in 1988. The Power of God’s Love Podcast subscribers and anyone who tunes in to my website can have the song delivered right to your player or inbox. Either way, here’s…

What Can I Do?

I want to dream, but I can’t even get to sleep
And I want to run, but I’ve got promises to keep
I don’t mind the struggle, but I’m tired of the fight
And I don’t want to stand still while the day turns into night

But what can I do?
I’m only one man
I’d love to see peace in this life
But I don’t have a plan
Tell me what can I do?
I’m only one guy
I’d love to see love conquer all and hatred run dry
But what can I do?
Tell me what can I possibly do?

I want to laugh, but I can’t even seem to smile
And I want to win, but I don’t even make the trial
I don’t mind the darkness, but I do prefer the light
And I don’t want to stand still while the day turns into night

Make hay while the sun shines

Make hay while the sun shines

It’s an old saying. But it’s still true. “Make hay while the sun shines” means to make the best of opportunity while it lasts. But these days there are huge amounts of doomsdayers and naysayers who’d rather burn that hay and dance gleefully around the fire. And sing out joyfully to theirs gods of selfishness.

Play

You can still make hay while the sun shines even in the middle of chaos.

But you need wisdom. And that’s not the same thing as how book smart or street smart you are. Wisdom isn’t taught in any government schools. From kindergarten to college. And, sadly, it’s not passed on through generations in most homes. So, it’s gonna take some effort, on your part, to get wisdom. And then use it instead of the nonsense trying to pass itself off as education these days.

Because it’s only wisdom that can help you keep your head while others are losing theirs. (borrowing a bit from one of my favorite poets, Rudyard Kipling)

If you’re an American, I’m pretty sure you understand I’m sharing a thinly veiled analogy about our current virus crisis. And it’s because here in Colorado (and several other states) the local governments are seeing fit to basically shut a lot of businesses down. Because, unfortunately, many (if not most) of the government “officials” have no wisdom. Especially when it comes to economics.

As a good friend of mine often says, “Ideas have consequences.”

So, be sure your ideas have good consequences. If you can’t see the big picture and how actions affect others, you shouldn’t be in charge of anything or anyone else but you. And I’d be concerned for you, too. Because you’ll have to suffer your own consequences even if no one else does. (which isn’t likely because your consequences almost always affect somebody)

OK, there’s your mission for the day. Get wisdom. And get wise to the selfish deeds of others. Otherwise (See what I did there?) you’ll find yourself left with only the victim card to play.

While the sun shines you can make hay,
Or just burn hay and hide away.
It’s your choice what you’ll do today.
But the WISE choice is to make hay.

Stay tuned,

Tony Funderburk says make hay while the sun shines

Outside the box, inside the lines, up to the blue skies, down in the mines

Outside the box and inside the lines

They tell you to think outside the box. But then they say you should stay inside the lines of a proven system. Oh, what’s a human to do? And who’s right? The outsiders or the insiders?

Stay inside the lines when you’re thinking outside the box.

You don’t have to follow my advice. In fact, maybe you shouldn’t. Maybe what I’m talking about doesn’t apply to your life at all. And if that’s the case, enjoy my lyrics, have a glass of wine (or cup of coffee), and forget I said anything.

But then again…

Maybe there’s something in what I’m about to share that you can relate to. And maybe you’ll get what I’m talking about and say, “Wow, that Tony. He’s such a wild and crazy wordsmith genius.” Or something to that effect.

Anyway. I’m just sharing encouraging rhymes and reasons. And guess what. I’ve been doing that every day this year so far. In case you’re reading this in the future (which won’t be the future to you, it’ll be now), this is the year 2020. And I’ve made it part of my mission to blast out encouraging rhymes and reasons and words and music every day.

So, here’s the rhyme of the day for March 16th.

Inside The Lines

Inside the lines the grass is greener.
Outside the box the air is cleaner.
Some days your life runs like a river.
Some nights you only quake and quiver.

And then the sun begins to shine, you draw another line.
And then the box becomes a place to store your things.
So, then the flowers start to grow, your words begin to flow,
And then you’re glad to join in when the whole world sings.

Inside the lines the route is shorter.
Outside the box there’s no recorder.
Some days your view is from the summit.
Some nights your dreams will let you plummet.

And then the sun begins to shine, you draw another line.
And then the box becomes a place to store your things.
So, then the flowers start to grow, your words begin to flow,
And then you’re glad to join in when the whole world sings.

Music and creation makes a beautiful sensation.

Who doesn’t love music and creation?

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen comments pop up on social media about it. Seems like lots of writers and other creatives like to listen to music when they’re working. And I know, from personal experience, how hardworking people love to play music on the job. They say it helps ’em get it done. So, it just makes sense that music and creation go together like rocks and rolls.

Music and creation makes a beautiful sensation.

But what is it about music that stimulates and enhances creation?

I’ve talked about it before. And if this is old news to you, skip on down. But music activates the four main systems in your brain. And they are…

  • Auditory system or center: Naturally, you gotta be able to process sound
  • Motor system or center: Where your brain processes rhythm
  • Language system or center: The area of the brain where lyrics are processed
  • Limbic system or center: Maybe the most complex area where emotions are processed

Think of each one of those systems as a switch that gets flipped on by music. Pretty cool, right? Yeah, a single note on a piano goes through your ears and flips on the auditory switch. Can’t really get going till that happens. Then, maybe a few more notes float into the ears, through the auditory system, and into the motor system. And suddenly you find yourself tapping your fingers or toes.

Then, the song really gets going when a singer adds some words and flips the language switch on. Communication kicks in. Ideas and messages are transmitted. And those can flip the limbic switch. Because there’s nothing quite like ideas and messages (aka opinions) to stir up emotions.

All that unseen action from some unseen sonic vibrations.

Hard to believe such beautiful complexity could all happen by accident. In fact, impossible for me to believe. Because I know the beginning of music and creation.

Give me songs to wake the brain waves
Through my often cluttered mind.
Give me sonic repercussions
No one else will ever find.
And a musical sensation
With connections to the source
Of all music and creation.
Yes, please give me that, of course.

The beginning of everything makes my heart sing.

Let’s talk about the beginning of everything

Because everything had a beginning. Surely we can all agree on that. Right? What?! You mean to tell me there are still people, in this day and age, who believe in perpetual motion machines?! Incredible! But what are you gonna do? Some people refuse to talk about the beginning of everything. Because it goes somewhere light.

And the beginning of everything is a cool “hot topic.”

Yeah, I’m using temperature metaphors on purpose. Because they’re totally relevant to yet another reason why our world…and our universe…is not old. At least not the same old repeated mantra of millions and billions of years old. Several thousand years, yeah. But not millions and billions.

And the universe was definitely NOT always here.

Have you ever noticed how every time you start a campfire, or a fire in your fireplace, it burns out? How about this? I’ll bet you’ve noticed how every time you put gas in your car the gas gauge still ends up going toward empty. Right? And how could you possibly not notice how every time you buy groceries, you run out? That’s something I bet you’re keenly aware of right now.

The point is, energy, whether it’s fire, gas, or food always gets consumed. You might say it goes from hot to cold. (Ok, maybe you wouldn’t say it. But I would…and did.)

“But what’s that got to do with the beginning of everything, Tony?”

Uh…only everything.

If the universe had always been here, everything in it would now be the same temperature. Including you and me, by the way. And guess what? This might shock you to find out. But scientists, at least the ones with brains, all agree that temperatures all around the world and universe are different.

And that’s hot proof the universe is not infinitely old.

So guess what that means? OK, I won’t make you guess. It means the universe had a beginning. And as much as so many people hate to hear this, it means the universe had a Creator. (collective “gasp!”) You’ve probably heard of Him. God.

“But if everything had a beginning, who created God, Tony?!”

Do I really have to splain it to you? OK. It’s simple. God is not a thing. He’s spirit. Eternal spirit. And yes, it’s difficult for us finite beings to wrap our minds around the concept of no beginning. But God has always been.

And I’m glad to know He’s always there and has always been there.

You can ignore thermodynamics if you prefer. But that’s not gonna help you in the long run. And the long run, or the long game as some like to say, is where you should focus. This world will end. Your body will end. All the available current energy will end.

But God’s love and life will never end. And He freely offers it to anyone who will ask.

The beginning of life and the end of pain
Are found in the same bright place.
You should really prepare to get right with God.
You will meet Him face to face.

Stay tuned,

Music does me good, when it's playing like it should.

Yes, music does me good. And you?

Whenever I’ve gone through a rough patch in life. Anytime I’ve spent hours, days, or even weeks alone. And basically during any part of life’s up’s and down’s, music was there. And I love knowing it’s always there. Because music does me good. Can I get an amen?

Music does me good, when it's playing like it should.

Music does me good, but not just any music.

And that’s true for anyone. But unfortunately, for most people I’d have to include the word “can”. Music “can” do you good. But it’s not just anything you listen to that you call music. I know what some will say. “It’s subjective, Tony.” Yeah…to a degree. But there comes a point when it becomes perverted into something else entirely. And that’s when it does you harm.

For example, I live on a busy street. Lots of vehicles go by. All day. Every day. And there’s a traffic light about 50 yards from my house. So, many times a day a line of traffic forms out front. And many of those times there’s someone, in one of those cars, with their sound system up so loud, it vibrates the windows on our house. Of course, during nice weather, those nice people roll down their windows and generously share their “music.”

But that’s not what they’re sharing.

Most of those excessively loud beats are used to broadcast vile, despicable, so-called “lyrics.” And most of those so-called “lyrics” aren’t being sung. They’re being yelled. Or screamed. And hissed. And growled.

That’s not music.

Real music is played by real musicians. With real feeling. And real dynamics. And it should be a gentle force in your head that does your body, mind, and spirit good. Plus, it should make you feel more like serving your fellow human beings. Yeah, it should even help raise your character, or begin to put you in that mood. (collective “Gasp!)

Of course, I can hear the echoes of the millions who would dare to disagree. And that’s perfectly OK with me. Because it won’t make me any less right. In fact, it might help prove my point.

Music does me good when it’s playing like it should.
And there’s nothing like a song to make things better.
Music is a way you can redirect your day.
It’s like sending your own heart a new love letter.

Flirt alert with his mind in the dirt

Warning: Flirt Alert

They used to be called philanderers. Or maybe you’ve heard ’em called a Casanova, a Don Juan, or Lothario. And more recently you might’ve heard terms like ladies’ man, playboy, or stud. Way back when, you could’ve heard: skirt-chaser, tomcat, and wolf. Whichever name you choose, they all fall under my warning of flirt alert.

Flirt alert with his mind in the dirt

I know my flirt alert will have little effect on the general female population.

Because our culture has made it clear, girls…women…females…are equal to men in every way. Even in the areas of crude behavior. Once upon a time you might hear something like, “He cursed like a drunken sailor.” But nowadays you could say, “He cursed like a teenage girl.” And most people probably wouldn’t bat an eye.

And that’s a mighty sad commentary. Especially in America, where women’s honor has always been something worth fighting for.

But just watch social media or some other source for videos and news. And it won’t take long to see girls behaving like…well…drunken sailors. Only it’s worse than drunken sailors. Because girls have so much further to fall.

Back in 1979 I wrote a song about a guy who fits the definitions. A guy from the city who lives to conquer the opposite sex. And back then, I wouldn’t have thought my song could ever be about girls. But you could easily transfer this song from boy to girl, these days…

Big City Boy

Well, he’s holdin’ a beer with a steady hand
And grabbin’ at a girl with the other.
For a night in her high-rise apartment,
He would sell out the soul of his brother.
Well, he’s havin’ a time in the nightlife.
He’s burnin’ his candle at both ends.
He’s got lots of women who “love” him.
But very few he can call friends.

But he’s a big-city boy,
And he can’t hear what people say.
Yeah, he’s a big-city boy,
And he feels bigger when he gets his way.
Yeah, he’s a big-city boy,
And you won’t hear a word out of place.
Say what you will behind his back.
But don’t say anything bad to his face.

Well, he’s grabbin’ at threads of a shredded love,
And he’s barely holdin’ on by a string.
Right now he believes he’s got all that he needs,
But it won’t be long he won’t have a thing.
And he’s holdin’ on tight to his fleeting youth,
And he wastes all his chances in vain.
From his talk you would think he was flying high.
But he’s the kind of guy who misses his plane.

He’s a big-city boy.

Analog zone - hey, it just makes sense.

Analog zone of my own

OK, here’s my phone. Now, let’s see. Settings: General: software update. No, not in there. OK, Settings: Wi-Fi. And it’s not in there. Where would it be? Control center? No. Accessibility? No. And it’s not even under Emergency SOS. Well…I’ll toss this question out to all my fellow iPhone users. Where is the analog zone setting for our devices? Because I’m trying to protect my gear and my studio from this virus I keep hearing about.

Analog zone - hey, it just makes sense.

Maybe my iPhone 8 Plus is too old to have access to the analog zone.

Could that be it? Don’t tell me I’m gonna have to trade up just to get the protection I deserve as a native American citizen. Seriously? And shouldn’t my devices automatically update against such publicized viruses? I mean c’mon. We have the technology!

And I think the analog zone mode should be free for all devices. No matter how much it costs. Free…and easy access. Is that too much to ask for the safety and protection of all? I don’t “feel” like it is. And I’ll bet millions of others “feel” like I do. (cue the Peter Frampton song)

OK, I won’t beat this horse to death. But I WILL say one more thing. It’s my recommendation to all who spend so much time in the dirty, digital world. Get out as quickly as you can. Surely all the convenience, speed, and efficiency aren’t worth the price you have to pay. And I’m talking about the price of spreading this evil virus.

I suggest you protect yourself and go the way of the…

Analog Man

He makes his livin’ in that smoky ol’ dive
He’s still believin’ that his time will arrive
He bangs the keys out to the rhythm and horns
He says that it’s exactly why he was born
Don’t wanna face your facts…he’ll just keep makin’ tracks
Because he knows that it’s what keeps him alive

Don’t use no cellphone, and he don’t go online
Says AM radio will suit him just fine
Still winds his watch and keeps a pencil and pad
Ol’ black and white t.v”says it ain’t so bad
Don’t mind a little hiss”he says “that’s soulful bliss”
And that’s what really makes the music divine

He’s an analog cat in a digital cage
He’s an analog letter; not a digital page
Built his analog house from an analog plan
Says throw them little digits in the can
He’s an analog man

He lights his ciggy with a blue diamond match
Don’t play no video; he loves to play catch
He drives a Thunderbird from “˜56
It uses cheap gas and it’s easy to fix
Might leak a little oil, but it don’t overboil
And just like him it was the last of a batch

Repeat chorus”instrumental”chorus to end

Tuesday morning motivation is my mental recreation

OK, here’s your Tuesday morning motivation

First, with a show of hands, how many of you even need some Tuesday morning motivation? How about afternoon? Or evening? Well, that’s too bad. I ain’t got none for you. Aw, just kidding. You know I wouldn’t dis you like dat.

My Tuesday morning motivation is mostly for my brothers and sisters in the faith.

If you’re not one of those, you can still get some good out of it. But it won’t mean as much. Because it’ll be FOR you and not TO you. And that’s because if you haven’t already decided to trust your Creator, you’re not in good standing with God. And if you’re not in good standing with God, you and I can’t have as meaningful a relationship as we could otherwise.

But anyway…

Back to the motivation stuff.

And by the way…you can use this on other days too. It’s not specifically designed to be any more powerful or relevant on Tuesdays. By now, you’re probably saying, “Yumpin’ Yiminy, Tony. Get to the good stuff already!”

My, my…aren’t we the impatient, persnickety Polly? Or Pete? Side note: Did you know the word persnickety dates back to the 19th century? And it might have originated from a little kid saying the word particular. And somehow knick knack might also come into play. But according to Merriam-Webster, nobody knows for sure.

OK, enough with the word origin already. Let’s get down to brass tacks. Wait, did you know brass tacks were used to date coffins way back when? And that’s probably how we got the expression, “down to brass tacks.”

Uh-oh, I did it again, didn’t i? OK, I promise this time.

Here you go (and take this into your heart)…

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

Alright. Are you motivated now? Great. Go out and take that message of motivation as far as you can. I’m pullin’ for you.

Do good and do well.
Keep your soul out of hell.
Choose life and choose now.
Ask God to show you how.
Be His and belong
And be forever strong.

Stay tuned,

Songwriter journal for the bright-eyed and nocturnal

My songwriter journal

Over the years I’ve seen my songwriter journal go from a spiral notebook to what your reading right now. This blog post. I remember carrying my nineteen cent Bic pen around in my teeth like a chewed up cigar. And my trusty notebook in the seat of my car next to me. But now I can just tell Siri to “take a note”. Then, I can just copy and paste it into this blog when I get back to my computer. Here’s why I bring it up.

Songwriter journal for the bright-eyed and nocturnal

I’ve kept a songwriter journal every year of my life for decades.

“So what, Tony. Why should that mean anything to me?”

Well, I’m glad you’re curious. And maybe it doesn’t mean anything to you. Because maybe you’re not a songwriter. And you’ve never been. And you never want to be one. If that’s the case, no problem. But I bet you ARE a person who does something worth remembering. Yes? No?

Even if you think you do nothing worth remembering, I recommend keeping a journal. Because there might be someone (or many someones) who’d love to know more about you. Or they might just be curious why you were so boring. And voila! They can open up one of your journals (after you’ve left the planet) and read what you wrote. Then, they’ll know for sure why you were so boring.

But all seriousness aside…

I’ve heard a lot of speakers talk about the value of keeping a journal. And I typically nod silently as I think, “Wow, I was keeping journals long before they were ever even thinking about talking about it.”

So, my life confirms what they say about journaling.

I can go back to the seventies and see my first writings. And I can see how awful I was at it. It wasn’t bad. But it’s awful compared to what I’m able to write nowadays. And that’s because I kept doing it all this time. Of course, that’s how you get good…and get better and better…at anything.

Most of my writing is done on a computer or one of my other digital devices these days. But I recommend keeping a physical journal, too. At least now and then. Because there’s something fun about connecting the thoughts in your head to a paper page with swirling movements of your hand and ink from a pen.

So, as you live your life each day,
You might think up some things to say.
And if you do, then right away,
Grab your journal and write away.
Take my word for it kid,
You’ll be glad you did.

International Women's Day

Celebrating International Women’s Day

I’ve been a staunch supporter of the rights of women my entire adult life. No, I’m not a so-called “activist”. That just sounds silly to me. Because if you need to set aside one day and give it a title like International Women’s Day, you’re missing the big picture.

Play

International Women’s Day doesn’t give proper respect to women.

I get it. Draw attention to one day out of the year. And make sure everyone around the world knows about it. (like that’ll happen) Then, everyone stand up, shout, cheer, and pat each other on the back. Lots of hugs, speeches, and media opps. When you accomplish all that, men the world over will clearly understand the equal value of women.

Or not.

As it turns out, International Women’s Day began in 1911. That’s 109 years ago, as I write this, for those of you who’d rather not do the calculation. So, that means, it has basically been “celebrated” 109 days as of today. And here’s why I say that’s so fruitless.

Because 109 days is less than one third of one year.

“But why is that a big deal, Tony?”

Because it’s a much better idea to recognize and remember the value and importance of women every day. Not one day out of each year. But every day. Out of every year. That would have been almost 40,000 times in the last 109 years. Big difference.

And I have an even better idea.

Unless you prefer to be (or remain) sexist, when it comes to value and importance.

If you don’t already know how, learn to love your neighbor as yourself. Forget about whether that neighbor is a man or a woman. Don’t look for an opportunity to politicize or grandstand. Simply love your neighbor as yourself. And you know YOU have value and importance. Right? If you don’t believe that, why do you continue to feed and water yourself? etc. etc. etc.

Whether you believe it or not, your Creator knows when you truly love your neighbor. He sees when you beat them. Or steal from them. Or even murder them. Your heart of hearts is visible to the King of kings. Like the words to one of my songs says…

We will learn from His whole Word
And rightly divide it…
All in the name of our LORD.
We will fight against sin
Though the world wants to hide it
All in the name of our LORD.
We will love every neighbor
From the kings to the unborn…
All in the name of our LORD.
And we will rest in the knowledge
When we die, we are reborn…
All in the name of our LORD.

Writing music for kids - making them flip their lids

I’ve enjoyed writing music for kids

Kids give enthusiastic response when they hear music they like. Some will even flip their lids. For those of you who can’t remember far enough back, that means they go crazy. Metaphorically speaking. And that’s part of why I spent so much time writing music for kids. Even though my wife and I never had any, for some reason I was always able to entertain them. So, I did. But I’m curious about something, now.

Writing music for kids - making them flip their lids

These days, are most songwriters writing music for kids that is too simple?

I’ve just listened to about a half dozen songs for kids on a couple of different channels. And I noticed how the songs sounded so syrupy cutesy. Is it just me? Or do parents prefer their kids listen to twinkly, glittery songs? I mean, the songs I listened to practically gave me a toothache. And the ones sung by guys sounded “gay” to me. Not that every male vocalist has to belt out kids songs with a bellowing baritone voice. But at least keep it sounding like a real guy is singing and teaching and guiding.

But maybe that’s just me. Maybe I’m way, way too old-fashioned. And maybe my ideas of what music for kids should be are too outdated to even matter anymore.

Do you think that’s the case? When you get a chance, go to this page. And scroll down and listen to samples of my songs for kids. Then, leave me a comment. Or email me. And let me know what you think. Should I open my eyes to a new reality? And should I “call it a day” for the kids music?

Or do you think I should write and share more of it? Because I certainly don’t wanna waste my time on old-fashioned stuff nobody wants anymore.

There’s a place in my heart for kids
Where I write songs to flip their lids.
But if my songs live in the past,
Well, maybe I’ve written my last.

Music and math make you feel more of what's truly real.

Music and math – it all adds up

Way back in my school choir days I remember how much I enjoyed when we started learning about music dynamics. Because dynamics give music so much more emotion and depth. And in this digital age, a lot of those nuances are represented by numbers. So, you could say (in fact, I AM saying) music and math go together like logic and emotions.

Music and math make you feel more of what's truly real.

Music and math show up regularly in a music producer‘s world.

When I dig in to the editing sections of my recorded music, in my digital audio workstation (DAW for short) a lot of it comes down to numbers. For example, many dynamics are represented by letters like p or piano, which means “soft”. Or f which represents forte, and it means “loud”. But now, in a digital studio, it’s a matter of numbers from 1 to 127 which represent “velocity.” Somewhere around 20 to 40 would be soft. And somewhere around 70 to 90 would be loud.

Then all those subtle degrees of loudness or softness that are represented by letters become the other numbers.

And I love both methods. But for the sake of this topic, I’m focusing on the numbers. Sure, mezzo-forte and pianissimo sound much more poetic than 83 and 27. But it all boils down to connecting listeners to music on a much more emotional level. And it connects you so much more than just singing and playing at a single volume all the way through a song.

Yesterday I talked about the pythagorean theorem. And I showed how it uses obvious numbers to calculate areas. Well, Pythagoras is also apparently the one who discovered how the intervals between musical notes always have whole number ratios. At least if you want them to sound good. Because non whole number intervals tend to cause dissonance. Think of that as something rubbing you the wrong way. The dictionary defines it like this: “lacking harmony: irregular, dissonant chords.”

(By the way…Pythagoras was apparently a numerologist…a guy who basically worshiped numbers. Smart guy with no wisdom.)

So, even dissonance and harmony are based on music and math.

Intervals. Whole “number” ratios. That’s all math.

And when I’m writing a song, I’m always mentally keeping track of how many beats in the measure. How many measures in the line. The number of lines in the stanza. And even how many syllables per line, measure, or stanza. And when I get to a stopping point, it all adds up (See what I did there?) to a complete song.

I love music. And I love math.
And singing down a vocal path
That might feel like it goes nowhere,
But when it’s done, I find I’m there.
And every destination holds
A chance to see how life unfolds.
So, give me math and music, too,
And I will sing a song for you.
