Life goes on way past your last dawn

Your significance is measured by the highest standard in existence. God’s love. He created you in His image. And He created you, and gave you this life, on purpose. Your life goes on even after you’re gone from this world.

So, your life has meaning. And you won’t fully understand or comprehend it this side of Heaven.

But, for now, just know that life goes on.

Or just the existence of your soul goes on. It’s gonna be one or the other. One is in Heaven. The other? Not so much.

But YOU are going to Heaven. Right? So, that whole eternal bodiless soul existence in torment isn’t on your radar.

But maybe you know someone (or multiple someones) who seem like they’re on the, as AC/DC puts it, Highway to Hell. And yes, hell is real. Despite what some might tell you about it being a place Christians made up to scare you into believing in our God. Nope. That ain’t the truth.

Anyway…

…I’d like to suggest that you look for opportunities to show people who don’t trust Jesus that they’re not here as a result of trillions of beneficial mutations. Show them this life is overflowing with purpose. And the main purpose is to get to know the One who made them so they can have overflowing life that goes on FOREVER.

Faith comes by hearing. And for some people, if they don’t hear it from you, they might never hear it. Then, they might start to think the way this guy did in a poem I wrote fifty years ago…

Ashes In A Breeze

Where was I when I thought this up?
I was staring into a coffee cup.
I thought I’d write the things I felt
So the cold inside my heart would melt.
I’m a peaceful man…I love the world,
And once or twice I’ve kissed a girl.
I lead a life that carries on,
But something’s missing. Something’s wrong.

I’ve looked into ashtrays before
And never really thought anything,
But now I see the ashes inside,
And they represent everything.

My life is passing by like ashes in a breeze.
It’s like there is no meaning…perhaps I’m hard to please.

Ashes in a breeze…
Sounds like a phrase I’ve heard before,
But emptiness stays with me.
It fits me more and more.
And more and more I’m looking
Into empty coffee cups…
Seeing a reflection and trying to wake up.
If I should ever make
Another meaning for myself,
I’ll erase the cruel reflection,
And put the cup back on the shelf.

What do you believe would be why he would leave?

What do you believe God couldn’t or wouldn’t help you through? Of course, I mean things that don’t go against His nature and word. Do you think financial problems are out of the question? Family squabbles? Job pressures? With all the people in the world, surely there’s an end to His patience and understanding. Right?

Well, yes. And no.

He DOES make promises to us mere mortals.

In several places in the Bible, God says “I am with you.” And that He’ll help you.

Maybe He’ll hold you up with His “righteous right hand.” Or maybe He’ll anoint your head with oil. Who knows? Maybe He’ll send you “the Helper, the Holy Spirit.” Whoa, do you realize what that means?

It means His help could be as close as a prayer.

So, I repeat. What do you believe God couldn’t or wouldn’t help you through?

Why in the world would you fear what this temporary world might throw at you? I’d like to urge you to trust more and fear less. It may not come to you automatically. But make it a daily habit to eat the bread of Life and drink the Living Water. If and when you do, you’ll start to know that you know it’s true when God says “I Am with you.

If you know someone who hasn’t put their faith in God, find a way to remind them how their time to do that is mighty limited. His patience with this world will run out. And it could be today. No matter what any of us believe.

It’s me. I wrestle with me.
I know You can see my futility
So don’t let me be, and make me to see…
That it’s You. It’s all about You.
Whatever You do to carry me through
And bring me to You…well I want You to.
Lord, it’s all about You.

(from my song, “It’s All About You”)

What day is it? I know, but I'm gonna quiz it.

What day is it? Before I answer that, see if you know what Boxing Day, First Day of Hanukkah, Proclamation Day, Father’s Day, Christmas Holiday, Bank Holiday, National Day of Thanksgiving, Independence and Unity Day, and Day of Goodwill have in common?

Give up?

Here’s how those holidays line up:

  • Boxing Day – Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Austria, Australia, Aruba, and 100 more …
  • First Day of Hanukkah – Australia, Canada, Israel, United Kingdom, United States
  • Proclamation Day – Australia
  • Father’s Day – Bulgaria
  • Christmas Holiday – Iraq
  • Bank Holiday – Malta
  • National Day of Thanksgiving – Solomon Islands
  • Independence and Unity Day – Slovenia
  • Day of Goodwill – South Africa

OK, that being said, what day is it?

And the answer is, ALL those days. But what day is that? That day is this day. Today. All those holidays are celebrated on December 26th. And, armed with that information, I bet you’ll be able to conquer the rest of 2024 as if there were only a few, puny days left.

As I write this, there are literally only 5 other days of 2024 left after today. And two of those are Saturday and Sunday. Plus, the last day doesn’t count because most everybody counts it as a party day. So, that only leaves Friday, Monday, and Tuesday to get any work done.

But let’s be honest. Who’s gonna wanna get back to work after Christmas festivities and a weekend, only to work two days, and then go back into party mode?

Oh, I think I actually saw a hand or two in the air. Awesome. Two hips and hooray to you. We’ll be at it over here at the FunderHaus, too. Because we understand the blessing and privilege of working. Especially when most others will look for opportunities to goof off. Because we’ve seen how the end of one year can be an excellent springboard for the beginning of another.

So, I just wanted to take the time to wish you a solid springboard kinda day today. And I’d love to hear what put the spring in there for you, if you break the mold and work in the next few days.

Till next time, Happy Thank You Note Day.

It was about 2,000 years ago. And today doesn’t mark the exact day and time. But that’s another topic for later. Nevertheless some shepherds were on the job, whatever day and time it was. And their job was to watch over their flock of sheep. As they stood under the night sky, a host of angels appeared and told them to follow that curious light, they had noticed in the sky, to where it pointed. So, the shepherds followed that guiding star to Bethlehem to find out more about the story.

They discovered a man and his wife spending the night in a livestock pen with their newborn Baby in a manger. And for some strange reason, the shepherds believed what they were told about this Child. Which was that He was God in the flesh. Can you imagine? Yeah, that would qualify as a mighty big deal. At least if it was true.

Apparently that Child was who He was claimed to be. Because all these years later, we still talk about, sing about, and celebrate that Person born in a manger. And, as a matter of worldwide fact, all of history revolves around His life.

And probably no one knows the exact day and time that was.

But wow! How awesome it would have been to be there that night? Well, something that will be even more awesome and glorious will be to live in Paradise forever getting to know that Person we Christians call Jesus. He came to earth to be born as a real human baby. Then, He grew into a real human man. Then, He suffered a real human death. But He resurrected after 3 days to show us what could be true for any and all trust Him. And all because He loves us.

Since I don’t see myself as all that lovable, it does my heart good to re-read the story from time to time. And at this Christmas time of year, it’s particularly good to share it with others. I hope you will too. Merry Christmas 2024.

Because I CAN Love

What made You think
That I was worth the risk You took?
What made You take the time
To write Your Holy Book?
I don’t believe I’d give myself a second look,
But You did because You love.

You made a world
That was as perfect as could be,
But then I broke it
When You gave it all to me…
By going through the gate You made to set me free.
This You did because You love…me.

Because You love me so…in spite of all You know…
Because You did the most that You could ever do…
Because I clearly see…evidence of You in me…
Because I can love…I do love…You!

You put a life
And a will inside my soul.
You knew true love
Would be to give me full control.
But knowing You is all that ever makes me whole.
I trust You because You love…me.

I can live because You live!
I can love because You love!

Favorite Christmas songs and other sing-a-longs

Over the years I’ve written some Christmas songs. And one of them became one of my favorite Christmas songs. Hey, who says a songwriter can’t like his own music? Not me, that’s who.

Yes, it’s perfectly fine to have enough ego to admit you like something you create. It would be kinda stupid to be creating stuff you didn’t like. Where’s the good in that? It’s nowhere in there, that’s where.

Anyway…

The song I’m talking about is one I’ve been sharing song for a little bunch of Christmases. This year is no different. May the Prince of Peace and God of Christmas rule in your heart today and always. And you’re not required to include it in your list of favorite Christmas songs. But I hope it strikes a chord with you anyway.

Merry Christmas!

If the video player doesn’t appear for you, click or tap HERE

And here are the words…

I Believe In The God of Christmas

Some believe there’s just today,
And then we die and fade away…
Such a sad and hopeless life to lead.
Others say we never die,
We all live on above the sky…
Disregard the theft and hate and greed.

But I believe in the God of Christmas,
And I believe in His Gift to us all,
Yes, I believe that He died to save us
And that He rose to recover our fall.

Yes I believe in the God who loves us,
And I believe in the God who lives,
Yes I believe in the God of Christmas.
He gave His love, and He still freely gives.

One day soon we just may find
So many millions left behind
In a world where truth is torn apart.
Then no lights, no Christmas trees,
No arts and no humanities
Will bring peace to any broken heart.

But I believe in the God of Christmas…

Christmas hustle turned to a full-tilt bustle

The Christmas hustle was revved up to a full bustle, here in the hometown, this past weekend. And the Funderburks felt it more than usual because we had to pick up some essentials for our business and almost got stuck in a shopping center’s parking lot. The worst part was that we hadn’t brought food for an extended stay. Yikes!

But the Christmas hustle didn’t dampen our dogged determination.

We just kept making right-hand turns till one of them took us out of the parking lot and back down the road. Yes, that works. Even during the Christmas hustle.

Anyway…

I only brought it up because of how old-fashioned we are in the FundyHaus. We still dream of a white Christmas. We like to drive around in the evenings, during the week or two before the big day, and look at all the sparkly lights. And we enjoy the traditional holiday foods, movies, and music.

We are definitely NOT humbug about it all.

But, a few years ago, I wrote a song about a guy who was definitely NOT in the spirit of the season. And in the song he talks about why he felt what he felt. So, the song has kind’ve a Scrooge awakening feel to it. Since I share my original holiday songs this time of year, today’s offering is…

The Christmas Spirit

Didn’t wanna drive and look at no Christmas lights.
And I didn’t wanna have to shovel no Christmas snow.
Didn’t wanna scream out loud in the middle of a Christmas crowd.
Didn’t wanna have to say why I wouldn’t go.

And I didn’t wanna sing no sappy little Christmas songs.
Didn’t wanna see no perky little Christmas kid.
Didn’t wanna shop at no mall or spend any money at all.
No, I Didn’t wanna leave my house, but I’m glad I did.

‘Cause I could see it…I could hear it…
I could feel the Christmas Spirit.
Every moment…every minute…
I was thankful I was in it.
Now I savor every second when I’m near it…the Christmas Spirit.

Didn’t wanna get up early on Christmas day.
And I Didn’t wanna eat no ham or no Christmas pie.
Didn’t wanna have to get dressed for any sort of Christmas guest.
Didn’t wanna smile, but I changed, and here is why…

‘Cause I could see it…I could hear it.
I could feel the Christmas Spirit.
Every moment…every minute…
I was thankful I was in it.
Now I savor every second when I’m near it…the Christmas Spirit.

Christmastime and I'm thinking it's sublime

Ms Elle and I went for a drive in the Big K outback today. And I noticed something. It appears to be Christmastime. Did you guys realize that holiday slid into our midst again. Crazy, Daisy.

Anyway…

There’s something about the look and feel of the heartland that stirs up the warm and fuzzy embers of my heart and soul. And I think it has something to do with so much open land and open views. You can still get a feel of how America used to be mostly all over. You probably know of a section of your state that’s like that.

Maybe the following lyrics will light up some word pictures in your head from Christmastime past. Or maybe for something you hope for. Either way, I hope you’ll identify and relax into…

Christmastime

Close your eyes and lay yourself to rest.
Tomorrow brings more joy than you have guessed.
Warm hearts will abound, and friends will gather ‘round,
And you’ll know with every moment
Your Christmastime is best.
Close your eyes and think of what will be;
Gifts to give and relatives to see.
Someone taking photographs,
And in the kitchen Mother laughs,
And you wish your Christmastime would last eternally.

Christmastime is such a time for love;
A time to show just who you’re thinking of.
So hold on tight to every moment spent.
And when it’s done, you’ll know what Christmas meant.

Say a prayer before you go to sleep.
After that your slumber will be deep,
And in the morning when you rise
And listen to the happy sighs,
You’ll know that Christmastime is time you’ll always keep.

You are only here ‘cause he would love you near

Too many people thumb their nose at God and say (actually say out loud or say metaphorically) “You are cruel. And I hate you.” I know it’s harsh. But that’s what they say. In one way or another. And that’s even if they say they don’t believe God is real. So, here’s the thing about that.

You are NOT worthy of hate or criticism if you don’t exist.

It’s one of them thar conundrums.

But thankfully the one, true, living, loving, creator God IS real. And when you intelligently and thoughtfully consider what all He’s done for you so far, you’re not likely to hate Him for it.

At least that’s always my hope. Sadly, most people still find a way to hate God.

It’s as if they couldn’t care less about the first two laws of thermodynamics. Ain’t that crazy? I mean, c’mon! Those two laws basically say you can’t get something from nothing and a fire can’t burn forever. And those two laws have been observable from the git-go of time.

You don’t believe that our natural world, solar system, galaxy, and universe just “banged” into existence. Right? I sure don’t. Because that requires mind-boggling blind faith I just don’t possess.

It makes so much more sense (and it just so happens to be true) that a supernatural Creator designed it all. Everything works far too well for it to have been a happy accident. From the ginormosity (my own word for very big) of the universe to the irreducible complexity found in one teenyncy (my own word for very tiny) cell. So, we should be able to acknowledge that someone even larger and more complex made it.

Well, there are many who DO acknowledge. But there are so many more who just can’t go where the evidence leads. I know you’re not one of them. But if you know someone who is, help them learn to say something like this…

You Are

I’m not amazing. I’m no king.
No, I’m not the God of anything…
Oh but You are. Jesus…You are.
I’m not a savior. I’m not pure.
No, I’m not the One who has the cure…
Oh but You are. Jesus…You are.

You are…the start and finish
And the Morning Star.
Your love will not diminish.
You’re the Life Everlasting.
You’re the Rock of offense.
You’re the Only Source of Truth
Who makes it all make sense.
If they ask who’s gonna mend
This broken world, I’ll commence
To saying You are. Jesus.

I’m not perfection. I’m not near.
No, I’m not the One anyone should fear.
Oh, but You are, Jesus.
I’m not the True Vine nor The Word.
No, I’m not the Amen that we’ve heard.
Oh, but You are, Jesus.

Chorus 3 times

I deserve it but He doesn't serve it

I’m gonna get my usual awesome Christmas present this year. But certainly not because I deserve it. And here’s a list of other people who don’t deserve theirs. People who:

  • Donate to charities don’t go to Heaven
  • Take care of the elderly don’t go to Heaven
  • Perform random acts of kindness, every single day of their lives, don’t go to Heaven

It’s not that doing those things excludes you from Heaven. They just don’t get you there. There is one Way, and one Way only, to go there AND spend eternity in Heaven. And that’s to believe and trust in Jesus. Yeah, you just really believe He is the Son of God and Son of man. And that He really did come to earth to die for your sins. And that He really did rise again to show us how we can have eternal life with Him.

That’s what it takes for us to go to Heaven.

But you and I don’t deserve it.

And THAT is the ongoing Christmas present I get every year.

If you don’t believe that, I urge you to reconsider. Because your nature is pulling you ever downward. And it’s a bottomless abyss full of moans and groans. And it’s just as eternal as life in Heaven. All you gotta do is say, “Lord…don’t…

Give Me What I Deserve

You gave me life…
Gave me love, and gave me freedom.
You took my sins…
And You nailed “˜em, and You beat ’em…

‘Cause this person who you bought never had the nerve.
So I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

You gave me hope,
Gave me bread and living water.
You gave your blood…
When I led you to the slaughter.

But you never even fought or let your focus swerve.
And I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

Lord, don’t give me…what I deserve.
If I stand in the middle of the road,
Nudge me to Your side.
Lord, don’t give me…what I deserve…
‘Cause I’m the reason and the cause
Why Jesus died…But then He rose again!

You gave me joy…
Gave Your word you’d leave me never.
You gave Your life so that I could live forever.

And on this earthly azure dot I can choose to serve.
So I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

Christmas countdown 2024: only 7 six days more

We’re in the Christmas countdown for 2024. And, as I write this, it’s only 7 more days till the big day.

But the Christmas countdown I think about these days, started way back when.

And I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that eternity is a lot longer than the 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, or 90 years you might live in this space/time continuum. Whoops, I guess I done went ahead toad ya. But you already know it’s true. And that part that comes after those decades here on this little blue planet is where my Christmas countdown leads.

The best present anyone could ever hope to get was bought and paid for long before you and I were born.

I’m sure you know. But it’s like this.

If and when you’re willing to go wherever Truth takes you, you can end up in the saving Grace of Jesus. If you don’t believe you need a savior, then you’ll spend your life in vain. Plain and simple. And so unnecessary. And so sad.

God knew you before you were born. He wrote eternity on your heart, and He gave you options. To love Him. Or not. No matter what you might hear some people, even Christians, say, you DO have those options. Yes, you CAN, and MUST, choose. So, choose wisely.

And I see it like this. During this lifelong countdown to the ultimate Christmas I’d rather know I’m a product of God’s love. Not just some “lifeless lump of coal” wandering this earthly plane toward infinite blackness. That’s why I wrote a song to Him and said…

Your Love Restored My Soul

From my mother’s womb You have been my God,
Even if I didn’t always know it.
And I’ve loved You since my salvation day,
Even if…I didn’t always show it.

I believe Your Son is the only Way
To the life I know is never-ending.
So I cast my lot with the King of Kings
And His Truth I trust is never bending.

Jesus, Your love restored my soul.
You gave Your life to make me whole.
I’d be a lifeless lump of coal, oh
But Jesus, Your love restored my soul.

On my darkest days I am not alone.
You indwell me with Your Holy Spirit.
And Your “still small voice” is an open book
And Your grace is there if I draw near it.

And in that open Book is the one True God.
And the words revolve around His story.
And the words are turned into flesh and bone,
And He shares, with each of us, His glory.

Chorus twice

Your love restored my soul. (repeat 3 times)

Human suffering takes a lot of buffering

I read a short article about human suffering. And it reminded me of some old commercials for the headache product you’ve probably heard of. Bufferin. I remember old commercials from back in the days of black and white TV. Yeah, we humans sure want the pain to be gone. Even ALL the pain of the world.

C.S. Lewis is quoted as saying this: “The problem of reconciling human suffering with the existence of a God who loves, is only insoluble so long as we attach a trivial meaning to the word love, and look on things as if man were the centre of them. Man is not the centre. God does not exist for the sake of man. Man does not exist for his own sake. Thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. We were made not primarily that we may love God (though we were made for that too) but that God may love us, that we may become objects in which the divine love may rest well pleased.”

I wouldn’t have explained human suffering that way.

But ol’ C.S. certainly had a way with words. And it’s easy to see where his heart was. Which is quite a big deal since he started out a as an atheist. But he also discovered that a good combination of love and logic eradicated all doubt in the evidence for the Creator.

But love from God doesn’t entice most people. And logic, for just about everyone, went out the door a long time ago.

It’s annoying how people who hate Christianity (and Christians) try to use its doctrine instead of their own to try and ridicule or debunk it. But they know their own worldview of complete, blanketed tolerance doesn’t actually work. And one of the biggest reasons is that it means, to be true to their tolerance mantra, they should also tolerate whatever a Christian says or does as simply “doing what he feels is right.”

But they don’t, of course.

If they could just leave it at that, at least they’d be living true to their so-called love for tolerance and diversity. But they’re not interested in merely co-existing. They want wipe out any or evidence or even a notion of a living, loving Creator God. And their goal is NOT to coexist.

It’s to make sure Christians don’t exist.

So, that’s why Christians should stand more boldly and proudly than ever. Be like C.S. Lewis in your own circle of influence. Do your best to expose and invalidate the thoughtless, careless, and loveless doctrines of humanism and self-worship. Both love and pain will be involved. It’ll probably require a little human suffering. So, are you with me?

There will be trials…and tribulation,
In every life…in every nation.
You could give up…but bow your head
And thank your loving Lord instead.

December Monday, mon, is quickly here and gone

It’s already the third December Monday of 2024. And with temps, here in the heart of the heartland, lingering in the 20’s and 30’s at night, naturally my imagination wanders off into island time.

What? A December Monday doesn’t affect you that way?

Well, maybe that’s just because you haven’t waxed, poetically, about what’s waning gibbous out there in the middle of the night. No, I’m not talking about the street zombies with their convex or protuberant eyes. I’m talking about that beautiul moon with its observable illuminated part greater than a semicircle and less than a circle.

It was a similar sort of day and night, way back in 1976, when I wrote the lyrical story about a very special elephant from Puerto Rico. And it was winter time in the heart of the heartland, then, too. Which, of course, helps you conjure up images of sunny beaches and warm temps.

So, that’s why I picked this third December Monday, near the end of 2024, to share the following lyrics. They’re just for fun. Because I want you to get your week started off on the right foot. Full of love, Light, and laughter.

Marimba, The Yellow Elephant

They got a lotta pretty, white beach in Puerto Rico
Where you can hear the tambourines and castanets,
But the finest thing they got is a yellow elephant.
He named Marimba, a friend you can’t forget.
You may say you never heard of a yellow elephant,
But it’s true, and Marimba, he quite a lucky guy.
You see he stays as yellow as Puerto Rican bananas
By basking ‘neath the balmy Puerto Rico sky.
Marimba, Marimba…you lucky elephant…
Lying in the sand like a seashell.
You got Mister Blue Ocean to put you to sleep.
You get oh so drowsy from the stories he tell.
They got places down there that look like pictures.
They got weather that is sunny all day long,
But nothing can compare with the yellow elephant.
I ask you, am I right or am I wrong?
Come to Puerto Rico.
Come to see the sights,
But most of all come to see Marimba.
It’s like looking at a thousand yellow light.

Sinless perfection made a whole new direction

Sinless perfection. Man, did I ever miss that mark?! And I’ve got the lines in my face and gray/silver/white hair to prove it. Yep, I’ve lived long enough to see the killing effects of sin. But I’ve also lived long enough to gain some wisdom. And wisdom has taught me that those lines and gray hair just mean I’m closer to the end of my troubles.

Yep, I’m closer than ever to sinless perfection.

And I owe it all to love. But not just any love. Not the you and me wimpy kind of love that’s easily challenged by an ache or an emotion or witless words.

I owe it all to the one, solitary, sinless man who was, is, and always will be sinless perfection.

The man who started a three year ministry, at around the age of 30. And it was a supremely effective ministry which he used to teach, admonish, heal, and even raise people from the dead. You’re catching my drift, aren’t you?

If so, then you know he did something way more important than all those amazing things. He was beaten to a pulp and nailed to a cross. Then, he endured an agonizing, painfully slow death. And that was even after being found innocent. Let that sink in for a sec. Imagine a judge and/or jury finds you innocent and then sentences you to death.

Can you say, “Mistrial!”

But here’s the real kicker. The man I’m talking about holds the very fiber of all the universe in his hands. Yeah. It all holds together and functions light years more efficiently than the finest Swiss clock for one reason. And that reason is because it was created by Jesus. The embodiment of sinless perfection.

He wasn’t just “a good man,” or “a nice teacher,” or “a humble prophet,” as many have described Him. He was Truth. And He was God with us. Most definitely the manliest of all men. And yet He was the gentlest of all. He took on human flesh in order that He could endure (instead of us) the death we all deserve. He said, “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth…” But, ironically, the only true peace that ever existed on Earth was in His body and presence.

He showed us how we need to love one another. And He led by example. Because there’s no greater love than to “lay down one’s life for his friends.” So, Jesus is the ultimate reason for faith. And that’s why I sing…

Give Me The Whole Jesus

Oh give me love…give me justice…
Give me Grace and the strength to endure.
When the world comes against me,
Give me Your Spirit steadfast and sure.

Give me words…give me courage…
And give me time and a powerful voice.
And when many still may hate me,
Give me Your love and I’ll always rejoice.

Give me the whole Jesus;
The whole Good Lord…
The One who shields the child…
The One who wields the sword.
Give me the whole Jesus
Son of God and man…
‘Cause only Jesus saves…
And only Jesus can! Only Jesus can! Only Jesus can!

Then give me dreams…give me wisdom…
Give me peace at the end of my days.
And give me life…everlasting…
In Your world and in Your higher ways.

Chorus

When time runs out who will scream? Who will shout?

How do you know when time runs out for you? Pretty easy question to answer. Right? You’ll know when you’ve run out of time when your body takes that left turn back to the soil from whence it came.

(side note: I love to use that expression “from whence” because of a funny Jack Benny skit from a long time ago)

Anyway…

The point is you won’t have to wonder when time runs out.

Because whatever you’re doing here, in your current body, and in the current space/time continuum will end. You WILL absolutely stop what you’re doing. And you WILL absolutely move into another place. A permanent place. And I hope it’s a beautiful, never-ending paradise. I’m really only saying that to you if you’ve never read any of my words.

Way back in 2019 I started writing lyrics based on a title prompt someone suggested to me. I thought the phrase sounded ripe for lyrics. And I came up with a general idea for what I wanted it to say. But I got distracted by something. And I never got back to the lyrics. So, they’ve been stalled for over 5 years.

I just happened to see them about a half hour ago. And I think they can fit nicely into an idea I’ve been thinking about for a while. See if the current verse and chorus give you any notions. Feel free to pass them along if you like. Not saying I’ll use them. But I’ll read them and who knows? For your consideration, here’s…

When Time Fills Up With Gold

When we can’t get what we want,
We dig more.
If we can’t have what we want,
We look down.
When we can’t say what we mean
We miss out
And trade our life for what looks
Like a crown.

Here’s to songs and stories told…
To living life and being bold…
And seeing what we have to hold…
When time fills up with gold.

That wall gets attention and this they don't mention

That wall is a terrible place. And it gets almost NO attention. Oh sure, there are some who talk about it. But they’re usually called haters. And do-gooders. And technical stuff like that. But the media barely give it any mention.

Yeah, you won’t find many (if any) politicians talking about it either. From lowly locals all the way “up” to outgoing and incoming presidents. Nobody wants to talk about that wall.

‘Scuse me? You beg to differ? You think there’s more than enough talk about it? Oh wait, I see what happened. You thought I was talking about that so-called blockade kinda thingy down at the southern border of the USA. I guess I can understand your confusion. Sadly, it’s an easy mistake. But I was talking about another one. And…

If You Stand Behind That Wall

There’s a wall here between life and death
Where the unborn are denied their first breath.
There are guards here making sure that life ends
And they don’t care that they’re killing our friends.

Well you can’t plead ignorance.
You don’t stand blameless
When you stand in the middle of it all.
As you discard the innocent you shake foundations.
If you stand behind that wall, you will fall.

There’s a clear line between right and wrong.
Listen close, please, to the words of this song.
We were all, once, where those babies are now.
Mothers kept us, we all made it somehow.

Well, the martyred little ones your choice keeps nameless
Never had any single choice at all.
Please don’t discard the innocent, they’re God’s creation.
If you stand behind that wall, you will fall.

You will fall from Grace to a hopeless place
With eternal, mournful cries.
And the sound you’ll hear ringing in your ear
Is the sound of your own lies.

Song about freedom and how to not join, but beat 'em

I wrote a song about freedom. And it was a very me biased perspective. You probably can’t or won’t relate to the words at all when you read ’em. The main reason is, well, you’re not me. And that’s a mighty good thing.

Anyway…

My song about freedom was also influenced by life “on the road.”

Yeah, for a few years of my life, and mostly during my 30’s, I lived full-time “on the road.” (side note: I keep putting quotes around that phrase because I didn’t literally live on any road, it’s a metaphor)

So, I had a much different perspective on America than YOU. Because I saw a lot of places you’ll never see in this big country of ours. And I saw a lot of those places in the wee hours of the night when you were slumbering in your cozy, widdle beddy-bye.

Sorry, that was uncalled for. I’m sure you slept in dignified and stylish comfort just like any adult would.

But the point is, I travelled 100’s of thousands of miles while most people, except for truck drivers and other transporters, enjoyed a visit to Dreamtown.

And I didn’t just see, I also felt how freedom feels. Even though it was during years when so much of our freedoms were already fading into oblivion. But driving down those roads with barely any traffic was fab, man. And slowing down to cruise through the little burgs with no traffic lights (because there was no traffic) was smooth.

I could only imagine what the pioneers, who first traversed past the gateways to the west, must’ve felt. Open land. Big, open sky. Only the sounds of creatures and nature and the steady roll of wagon wheels or beats of hooves.

I was about to get “off the road” back in 1987. And I decided to head to Colorado, the state where I was born. Because I loved the mountain nights when you could see those giant, open skies. And I loved the wide open expanses across the prairies and down in the big valleys. So, in a bar, in Harrisonville, Arkansas, I stood at my keyboard and composed this song. My own send-off written to me. My own song about…

Freedom

I’m gunning for the gold medal, aiming for the sun dance.
Don’t wanna be a drifter all my life, I gotta take a new chance.
I’ve driven down the pipeline. I’ve seen so many street signs.
I’m headed back where I began.
I’ll try to make it mine; all mine.

And if I’ve even learned one thing,
It’s that the music never stops.
And if you dream inside a bubble,
You’ll be surprised when the bubble pops.
Oh, when the bubble pops!

Freedom; don’t want to lose my freedom.
I want to make my choice; make my voice be heard.
Freedom; I’m glad I have my freedom.
If all the world could see,
It would have to be the word. Freedom!

I’m shooting for the north star. And I’m tickling the silver strings.
I’m glad I have the chance to chase ideas and turn them into real things.
I’ve been down lots of broken roads,
Forgot about my Guiding Light.
But now I’m going back where I belong,
And everything is alright

And if I’ve even learned one thing,
It’s that the music never dies.
And if you never reach your rainbow,
At least you’ll see the bluer skies.
Yeah, the bluer skies.

Chorus…inst…repeat chorus

Do it yourself toys are great for little boys

This is for the kiddos. But if you’re an adult, make sure I’m not misleading them. I know plastic junk toys, made in China, are all the rage. But they don’t hold a homemade candle to do it yourself toys. Sure, they might not have pre-recorded whistles and bells. But you can replace all those with your own personalized sound effects.

And do it yourself toys can be found almost anywhere.

Yeah, go find me a nail, a rubber band, and an empty thread spool. And I’ll show you how to make a tank or bulldozer or steamroller. Or let’s grab a bag of clothespins, a footstool, and some end tables. And I’ll show you how to set up a fort and soldiers ready to defend it.

My younger brother and I lived with my grandparents for a while when we were still pre-schoolers. And my Grandmother would bring out her bag of wooden clothespins, some empty thread spools, and showed us how to “do it yourself.”

Simple ingredients for simple fun.

You don’t need the latest app or video game to have a ton-o-fun. Of course, those can be fun, and you might want them, but you don’t need them. You only need an imagination. If you use your imagination, your whole world can be like a giant video game. And I say D.I.Y. not? A broken tree limb becomes your magic walking stick that guides you to the hidden treasures of the world. A tiny triangle of paper becomes a football and two fingers become goal posts.

And here’s the best part. When you do it yourself, there’s the lasting feeling of knowing it was all yours. Plus, you’ll develop skills with your talents, and you might even create a work of art that others want. Who knows? Maybe you’ll still play video games, too.

But then, maybe they’ll be the ones you made. Cool.

Do it yourself toys beat all the rest
In ways you might not see.
They do things that apps and plastic can’t.
They show what you can be.

Make it yourself with a new idea,
A motor, and a wire.
You never know who might love your work
Or who you might inspire.

Challenge yourself to make some new things
That help you move and grow.
You might change the world, you never know,
That is…until you know.

Famous guy who rose up high as an apple of an eye

King David is a very famous guy. In fact, he’s one of the most famous men in the Bible. And there’s a place in the Bible where he’s described as “skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.” Wow, it’s like looking in a virtual mirror.

Anyway…

That famous guy was also a poet and songwriter.

Maybe you’ve heard of the Psalms. Yes? Most of them were written by a good-looking man of war. Bam! Not some wimpy, modern-day, watered-down idea of what a poet is. And my guess is, although there’s no actual written account of it, that David didn’t sing like a soy boy. You know. That whispery, whiny stuff you hear these days.

But I progress…

The reason I brought up King David, and his prolific poetry and prose powers, is because I ran across a 47 year old poem of mine in my files. And sometimes, when I read an old poem, I recall the actual feelings I experienced that inspired me to write it. It might surprise some how the apparently obvious meaning didn’t originate as you’d imagine.

And that’s the case with this poem. It’s not about me. It’s an example of personification. Or symbolism. And I seem to recall that I wrote it after I saw a commercial that took place on a beach. This poem, that I also turned into a song (according to my 47 year old handwriting is in A flat) is in the verse-chorus-verse format. Each section has words that point to the main character. And the me or my or I mentioned is the object of personification.

Bet you can’t guess what or who it is. Hint: it’s not a famous guy.

Open Me Up

Open up my eyes.
Let me out of this disguise.
Let me burn up like a candle in the sun.
I wish to smell a rose
And feel sand between my toes.
Let me leave and go and say what’s done is done.

I can’t say a single word that’s not been said before.
And I can’t sing another song because there are no more.
I just hope there is no gloom
After saying I’m in bloom…
And that I wish…
Someone soon…
Would open me up.

Open up my eyes.
Let me see into the skies.
Let me fall into the ocean many times.
I wish to find a key
And then hope that it fits me.
Let me leave behind a poem with many rhymes.

Christian school was cool but it didn't rule

For three years I led the praise and worship music in a church in the Denver, Colorado metro area. And the services were held, every Sunday, in the gym of a Christian school. Elgielene and I got to know the owners of the school pretty well. They were a former pastor and his wife and their grown children. And I remember many enjoyable conversations with the former pastor as well as a few with the rest of the family.

One of those conversations was a comparison I made about their Christian school.

And I guess you could say it wasn’t a “nice” comparison. Because I pointed out how the secular high school I attended was FAR more conservative than their Christian school. Oops. That didn’t go over well.

But it was observably true.

So, I proceeded to make the case for why I’d dare say such a thing. And there was no shortage of evidence. For example, my high school required:

  • Boys’ haircuts to keep the hair above the ears, collar, and eyebrows
  • Girls to wear dresses, with the only exception being extreme cold weather
  • Girls’ dresses to be no more than a certain amount above the knees
  • Boys’ shirts to be tucked in, with the only exception being a “shirt-jac” style
  • A belt to be worn with any pants that had belt loops
  • NO attire with any images or words deemed obscene or similarly inappropriate
  • NO excess noise in halls during class transitions
  • Shoes AND socks to be worn. NO sandals
  • Corporal punishment (paddling with significantly large paddle) for some offenses

And that’s not all the rules. But certainly enough that you get the point.

My secular high school included prayer before assemblies and sports events.

And there was a moment for silent prayer at the beginning of every school day during morning announcements. Students, who were found guilty of certain offenses, were often assigned “lunchroom duty.” That included cleanup of the trays, trash, and spills that might occur.

But it wasn’t all about rules, regulations, and rowdiness.

For example, our choir often sang (get ready for a shocker) “religious” songs. I was a member of the choir for the last three years of high school. And I don’t even remember how many Christian themed pieces of music we performed. Matter of fact, I received my first ONE, as a soloist, for singing a song called “The Lord Is My Light.”

And check out the lyrics to this song our boys’ choir performed. As you read the words, try to hear most of the Amens being sung by the baritones and basses. And imagine the lyrics in parentheses being sung by the tenors. I was one of the parentheses singers:

Amen

Amen, amen Amen, amen, amen.
(Sing it over) Amen, amen Amen, amen, amen
(See the baby) amen, (wrapped in a manger) amen,
(on Christmas morning) amen, amen, amen.
(See Him in the temple) amen, (talkin’ with the elders) amen,
(who marveled at His wisdom) amen, amen, amen.
Amen, amen Amen, amen, amen.
(See Him at the Jordan) amen, (where John was baptizin’) amen,
and savin’ all sinners) amen, amen, amen.
(See Him at the seaside) amen, (talkin’ to the fishermen) amen,
(and makin’ them disciples) amen, amen, amen.
Amen, amen Amen, amen, amen.
(Marchin in Jerusalem) amen, (over palm branches) amen,
(in pomp and splendor) amen, amen, amen.
(See Him in the garden) amen, (prayin’ to His Father) amen,
(in deepest sorrow) amen, amen, amen.
Amen, amen Amen, amen, amen.
(Led before Pilate) amen, (then they crucified Him) amen,
(but He rose on Easter), amen, amen, amen.
(Hallelujah) amen, (He died to save us) amen,
(and He lives forever) amen, amen, amen.

During one of the school spring presentations, our choir also sang what was known as a “negro spiritual.” It went a little something like this:

Soon-a will be done-a with the troubles of the world,
Troubles of the world,
The troubles of the world.
Soon-a will be done-a with the troubles of the world.
Goin’ home to live with God.

Yes, I promise, I did NOT attend a Christian school.

But it was heavily influenced by Christian principles and standards.

And I believe those of us who attended, during that time, were much the better for it. It was FAR from perfect, just as any human establishment or organization. But it’s painfully obvious what happens when establishments, organizations, and people stray as far as they have from those principles and standards.

And I hope you understand that government will not return us to something better. People, who willingly soak up government indoctrination (public schools) instead of God’s word, will be easily led astray. To the point where a Christian school or even a church will raise the sinful rainbow flag.

That’s why, almost 29 years ago, I wrote:

Do you see the pattern form
How the wrong becomes the norm?
Say Yeah!

Mandy lyrics fail to tell the tale

I’m sure, if I asked, you could tell me at least a few of those famous Mandy lyrics. Right? Because that song was pounded into your brain from all those “Top 40” stations.

So, when I share these Mandy lyrics I’m sure they’ll click right away.

(verse)
Make me feel so good, make me feel so alive
(repeat twice more)
Like how coping should
Meant to be, or to die
All I need is to know
I need you to decide
And let everything go

[Outro]
Make me feel so good, make me feel so alive
(repeat twice more)
Like how coping should
Meant to be, or to diе
All I need is to know
I need you to decide
And let еverything go

Sorry, what did you say? Those weren’t the Mandy lyrics you expected? Oh. Hang on. You thought I was talking about that song from WAY back by Barry Manilow. Yeah, I guess I can see how you might assume that. Probably was a bit more famous than the “song” I just shared.

Of course, I’m pullin’ your leg a bit. I found those “lyrics” while I did a little research for another famous Mandy. Well, she was famous in MY family anyway. Her name was actually Amanda Caroline Houck. And she was my Great-Grandmother on my Mom’s side of the family. But we all knew her as Poodle. Although I didn’t get to really know her. Because she was born only a dozen years after the Civil War and died when I was only 5.

But let’s get back to those “lyrics” I shared.

I copied and pasted the Mandy lyrics from a specialize lyrics website, just the way they were presented on that site. And I couldn’t help but notice, as I’m sure you did, how the “verse” is exactly the same thing as the “outro.” I’ve never heard the “song.” But my guess is that it’s FAR too deep for me. And I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that whoever performs the song probably repeats those same words quite a bit. You know, to embed the deep message deep inside your open mind. Just a guess.

When I think about how many times I sat down and wasted so much time. All that precious time writing multiple verses, a chorus, and maybe even a bridge. And all that time I thought I should share a story to connect my listeners. When, in reality, all you need is a hook line, or some hook lines, and the skill of repetition. Yeesh.

I’m sure my Great-Grandmother Mandy would not approve.

Anyway…

The degradation of song lyrics is really just the tip of the iceberg for a broken, crumbling world. Cultures have come and gone for a few thousand years. But I’ve only witnessed that last several decades of the process. But it sure feels like it could be winding down into final brokenness, to the time when God will say “Enough.”

That’s kinda part of why I wrote a worship song, based on what the pastor of the church I led music for, taught. I liked how he shared stories from the Bible. And he talked about how people tend to talk a lot about Bible times as though they’re all ancient history. But actually, when you read it till the end, you see how…

These Are The Bible Days

I’m no prophet, but God can work through me.
Willing servants are all He wants to see.
We can learn from the past, the apostles,
and all of their ways,
But we live in the here and now, and these….are the Bible days.

Lord, our small hearts are full of love from You.
Help us know what You’d rather have us do.
Help the sheep hear Your call in this world that’s so full of strays.
As it was when Your Son arose; still these…are the Bible days.

When darkness falls…These are the Bible days.
Temptation calls…These are the Bible days.
When right is wrong…These are the Bible days.
The weak get strong…These are the Bible days.
Till every mountain sways, till every debtor pays,
Till every helpless, hopeless, sinner prays…
These…are the Bible days.

There’s no difference when going first to last.
Lord we need you like generations passed.
Give us strength for this life and help us always focus our gaze
With our eyes on the Prize because these…
are the Bible days.

Chorus
