Normal people ain't cool but don't be a tool

Normal people ain’t cool these days. And that’s too bad. Because they used to be. Here’s an example of what I mean. Quite a few years back, my father-in-law mentioned how he mowed the lawn for “an old lady” down the street. For free. Not as part of business or anything like that. He was already retired. No, he just did it to help her out. Because she didn’t have any children or other family dropping in on her to help. So, my father-in-law just did what “normal people” used to do.

But nope. Normal people ain’t cool no mo, bro.

And I know using the term “bro” isn’t even cool anymore. (I never cared for it anyway, but…)

  • People who just wanna “sit and visit” with neighbors with a glass of lemonade or tea.
  • And people who don’t wanna sit around telling dirty jokes while they “watch the game.”
  • And people who don’t have tattoos from head to toe.

Yeah, those all used to be normal people. But that ain’t cool now.

And there’s only one thing more important than being cool. No wait. There’s nothing more important than being cool. ‘Cause coolness is the ticket to paradise. Right? Coolness gets you in “all the right places.” Seen with “all the right peeps.” So with all your getting, get cool. Nix normal. Normal is so 20th Century. It’s so silver screen, so it ain’t cool. And it’s only for the boring bourgeois. Oops. Bourgeois is probably too normal. So, I might have just revealed my numbskull normalcy (aka normality). If so, so be it. Give me the old norm over the so-called “new norm” any day, week, month, or year.

Does it make me your enemy if my norm doesn’t match yours?

Probably. Because people are so easily offended these day. And they’re so quick to anger. And so slow to wisdom. But guess what? That’s not new. You might believe you’re part of the cream of the cause du jour. But you’re only doing what human beings have done for thousands of years. Rebelling against God.

And I know the “cool peeps” aren’t gonna listen to a knucklehead from the old norm, like me. But your rebellion against God won’t go well for you. So, I urge you to spend a little less time on tattoos and tough talk and a lot more time working on wisdom.

Hey! What was that? Looked like a tiny bee. Oh wait. No, it was my words going in one ear and out the other.

Normal people used to smile and then say hi
When they saw you on the sidewalk passing by.
But nowadays I guess that kind of stuff’s not cool.
If you do it, they’ll all know that you’re old school.
So, remember when you go somewhere today,
There ain’t nothin’ that you need to do or say
To acknowledge anybody you might see.
Just be cool because it’s all you need to be.

Wednesday greetings and temporary soul beatings

This is the day of the week known in some circles as hump day. So you know what that means. Yeah, Wednesday greetings from your favorite rhyme writer and Bible thumper.

But Wednesday greetings are just the tip of the iceberg.

Because, if you’ve followed along for any time at all, you know I’m gonna talk about something important to your eternal happiness. Or lack thereof, if you happen to be one of those knuckleheads who doesn’t believe that Jesus is the savior of the world.

Anyway… I’ll just dive into what I wanted to share with you. It’s something I shared a few years ago that still applies right now.

When you were a kid, did your dad work hard and still come home and play with you? Or spend some other sort of great quality time with you? Mine did. And there was never a moment, during those times with him, where I had to wait for him to check his messages, or text somebody, or watch a silly video. For one thing, smartphones and other digital devices didn’t exist back then. But even if they had, my Dad would have made sure we spent time together on more important things.

By the way, the more important things in life aren’t “things.”

Ask anybody who truly knows me, and they’ll say, “Yes, he is a techie guy.” In fact, as a pre-teen and teenager, my family called me “technical Tony”. They didn’t always mean it as a term of endearment. But that’s another story for another time. The point is…I enjoy technology.  I’m still fascinated by the latest, greatest mobile device or laptop. I think it’s all so incredibly cool.

But my digital tools aren’t even in the same league with the importance of my relationships. That’s why I say the more important things in life aren’t things. They’re your relationships with loved (and even liked ones). You gotta place an extremely high value on your relationships. You know why? Because here on Earth they don’t last long.

Every thing here is temporary. For example…

Getting back to my Dad. He worked hard. For most of his working life he was a milkman. And this was back in the days when a milkman would deliver dairy products door-to-door. I remember going to work with him on a LOT of Saturdays. So, when I say he worked hard, I know what I’m talking about from personal experience. We got up around 3 a.m. to be at the dairy plant in time to have his truck loaded and on the road by 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. At the dairy plant, I remember hauling a heavily loaded dolly into a cold storage area in his milk truck that was stacked with cases of gallons, half gallons, and quarts of milk, juice, butter, and more.

Dad worked two routes each week. One was his Monday, Wednesday, Friday route. The other was Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. He delivered milk in some neighborhoods in Texas near NASA. In fact (as a side note) several of his customers were some of the first well-known astronauts.

Another side note (and true story) Dad made sure, on one of those Saturdays I was with him, I got to personally hand deliver a half gallon of ice cream to Neil Armstrong. For those of you born in this century…Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon. And little ol’ me handed him a container of Dutch chocolate rocky road ice cream! (I think that’s what it was)

Wow…talk about an astronomical rabbit trail. Anyway. Even on those long Saturdays, when I was helping Dad deliver milk, he spent lots of time with me. Not just telling me what to do, but also having conversations about the more important things in life. Things like what I was learning in math, science, and language classes. Other things like family and where I was going someday when I die. Yeah, even that. Those one-on-one times with my Dad were priceless. And I wouldn’t trade a second of them for all the cool technology in the world.

Dad died when he was only 51.

There were tough times with my Dad, too. He was a strict disciplinarian. And when I failed to do the right thing once in a while, sometimes there were serious consequences. But those times never overshadowed the times Dad spent with me showing me how to use tools and work on lawnmowers, bicycles, and even my first car. Or the times he spent building (yes, building) go-karts for my brother and me to test drive and blast around the block.

Dad even showed us how to fly kites using our saltwater fishing rods and reels. He’d throw the football with us, in the street, during football season. He taught us the finer points of throwing a baseball with either hand. I remember even getting him to play tennis with me when I started up that sport in high school. And I remember it was the first sport where I could beat him. Guys might identify more with me on that…how it feels to beat your dad at anything for the first time. Right?

My Dad was only 20 years older than me. So, he’s now been gone more than half my life. And I still think of him and so many of those special moments almost daily. I always will.

I’m not sure if he knows, right now, how important a role he played in my life. But I AM sure he knows, without a doubt, what the more important things in life are. He was (and is) a Christian. So, I know my Dad is “present with the Lord” right now. And Dad has experienced, firsthand for over 32 years, the ultimate relationship. It’s an awesome and incredible HOPE I have…to know I’ll see him again someday. And to know we’ll be eternal brothers in the presence of the one, true, living, loving Creator.

Interrupt temporary with eternal.

Take a pause as you go through your day today. When you check your texts, instant messages, social media accounts, YouTube and Instagram videos, and even your eCommerce stats. Look up. Look around. Pay attention to the ones you love. Talk to them. Embrace. Laugh. Enjoy the time. They won’t be here forever. You won’t either. Be you’ll all be somewhere forever. Talk about that. And be sure where you’re going. It matters more than any other message you’ll receive from any other source.

Are you good to go? Great. Then I’ll finish these Wednesday greetings with a request.

Be sure to share with your friends, family, and anyone you care about. Don’t keep this good stuff all to yourself. Tell them to…

In the tomb He lay but for just that day

As I write this, it’s Saturday. But not an ordinary Saturday. Because this one marks the anniversary of what a lot of people call Holy Saturday. The day that Jesus, creator of the universe and you and me, lay in the tomb after a torturous crucifixion death.

But, as you probably know, His story definitely did not end in the tomb.

The apostle John wrote a very interesting account of how they laid Jesus in the tomb. He wrote: And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

I kinda look at it this way. Holy Saturday, the day Jesus lay in the tomb, was like a day of rest for Him. Resting from what he had done, so far, to prove who He was and is. And He is the Truth, the Life, and…

The Way

And it came to pass one day on a mountain far away
That a soul was taken and a life forsaken
Because someone had to pay
For the heart of all mankind.
There was no untarnished mind.
So one life was spent Who was innocent,
But He left His Word behind…

Forgive them for they know not what they do.
Redeem them and I give My Blood to You.

We can rise up
No matter how much the guilt might weigh.
He said…”I am the Way!”

Now so many years have gone.
And we love with blinders on.
How we tolerate is a form of hate.
Where’s the Rock He stood upon?
For the Truth is absolute and it’s foolish to dispute.
It confounds the wise but it opens eyes,
And it saves the destitute

Chorus

Now don’t turn to the left don’t turn to the right.
Just run straight to Him with all your might!

inst…chorus to end   © 1996 TF

If you’re a Christian, and you sure should be, then you’re celebrating the most glorious thing that ever happened in the history of the universe this weekend. Holy Saturday is a great part of that. But of course tomorrow is 1000 times better. Because that marks the day when Jesus was no longer in the tomb. And I’ll talk more about that tomorrow. Meantime, if you haven’t already, you should…

For about 10 to 12 years of my life there was only one person, in the whole world, that I saw year round. And that was my younger brother. Our parents divorced when I was about four years old. And after a couple of years they lived about 1000 miles apart. So they had to figure out a way for my brother and me to spend time with both of them. And I think that’s part of the reason why we both learned to improvise for real life so well.

Our dad taught us how to improvise for real life, too.

And one thing he taught us led me to send a picture of something, I found on the ground, to my younger brother. Before I tell you what that was I gotta mention how he and I had a falling out and didn’t even see each other for about 15 to 18 years. Sadly, we don’t share the same worldview, but at least we reconnected a couple of years ago. And now we chat regularly, through messaging apps, and even see each other occasionally.

Our most recent chat, this morning, started with a picture I sent my brother of a lead weight for balancing tires. I spotted it during a walk with Elgielene. And I told her that I bet my brother would recall what we did in our lives that would make me send him that picture. Sure enough, he replied with “melting down for fishing weights.”

When he and I used to ride with my dad, in his step-van delivery truck, dad told us to keep our eyes open at every stop sign in red light. Because you could almost always find those balancing weights laying next to the curb or somewhere close. When we had a good-size collection of them, the three of us would melt down the lead and pour it into old spoons to make weights for our saltwater fishing rod and reels.

My brother then reminded me of how he and I used to collect matchbooks. And we got a very large collection with a wide variety of styles and logos. The collection would probably be worth some money now. A lot of of them we found the same way that we found those lead weights, standing in the door of dad’s delivery truck. Others we just found along whatever path we were taking to get from someplace to another.

Then I remembered another story of improvisation.

When we were about 12 and 10, we lived in Pasadena, Texas, only about 12 miles from the San Jacinto Monument. And one day we decided to take a bike ride there with a couple of our friends. So, we headed out, rode to the monument, spent some time there checking things out, and then decided it was time to go home.

But being still somewhat young, we hadn’t planned well enough with water and food. And we didn’t have any money left. And we only made it a few miles back toward home before getting very tired. We figured we’d better call dad to come pick us up with his step-van. So, one of us got a flat, but nobody had even a dime to make a call. We made it to a gas station, looked around for coins, and found a penny. Then we took turns scraping the penny on the asphalt until it was small enough to fit into the payphone like a dime.

We made the call, dad came and picked us up (only a little perturbed with us), and we all lived to tell the story.

After we chatted about that story, my brother and I recalled our improvised polo games on our stingray bicycles using baseball bats and aluminum cans. More than once, somebody ended up with bruised legs or feet.

Then we listed how we rode around on homemade go-karts that dad built using lawnmower motors for power. Plus, he showed us how to fly our kites using our saltwater rods and reels to reel in the kites. We were the envy of the block.

And what do you do when there’s no real fog to play hide and seek in?

That’s right. You improvise.

And we did every time the mosquito spray trucks would come around and dispense all that DDT fog. Yeah, we even lived to tell that story. Go figure.

Then there were what we called the Honda Hills, where we rode our bicycles first. And eventually rode motorbikes of one kind or another. And that little spot also had a funky little pond where we would go fishing with dad sometimes.

We agreed that we definitely had it better, and had a lot more fun, than kids who spend their days and nights glued to the so-called games on their smartphones and other devices. Plus, it gave us an encyclopedia of these irreplaceable glory stories.

Nowadays, you might hear a kid say that an app isn’t working right, so they have to improvise. But back then we had to improvise for real life. And sometimes it meant the difference between getting a ride or walking a bike for miles and miles.

I bet you have some stories like that, too. If so, I hope you’re like me and you thank God for that wonderful time of your life. We were truly blessed to be challenged in those ways. I wish more kids could experience that kind of America now. But I doubt if we ever see those kinds of days again here in America.

So, cherish the day AND your good memories. And I’ll talk to you again soon. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be…

Down By The Creek Bank

Down by the creek bank…
Sittin’ on a tree stump…
Listenin’ to the birds sing…
Lookin’ at a frog jump…
Thinkin’ lots of nice thoughts…
Sippin’ on a sweet tea…
Writin’ down a few words…
When they come and greet me…
Watchin’ little squirrels run…
Climbin’ up the oak trees…
Lyin’ in the green grass…
Waitin’ for a cool breeze…
Stayin’ till it’s twilight…
Catchin’ me a firefly…
Down by the creek bank…
Life is passin’ by.   © 2013 TF

Only one man might need a better plan

If you’ve lived long enough to become an adult in this world, you’ve probably noticed how many bad things are done by bad (and good) people. And if there’s a caring bone in your body, maybe you wonder what you can do. You might feel all alone. Or that no one else sees what you see. You might think it’s hopeless because you’re only one man (or woman). And what can just one person do? You might throw your hands up in frustration. If so, give yourself a break. We’ve all been there. I know I’ve been frustrated with people, governments, and nations. Still am.

And I felt so frustrated back in 1988 that I wrote a song to express it. I used dark, minor chords and a dark sounding piano with a nagging, urgent pulse. Then, I added a smacking snare to the drum kit so I could magnify the frustrated feeling of the song. And I did something I don’t often do in my music. I left the question unresolved. I probably did that to challenge myself to find an answer.

And today, I’d like to challenge you to answer the question. Don’t simply ask it with a sense of hopelessness. Find answers. They exist. Truth exists. Hope exists. I bet you know where to find them.

Here are the lyrics to the song I wrote. You might hear it when you Subscribe to The Rhyme And Reason Podcast .

What Can I Do?

I want to dream, but I can’t even get to sleep.
I want to run, but I’ve got promises to keep.
I don’t mind the struggle, but I’m tired of the fight.
I don’t want to stand still while the day turns into night.

But what can I do?
I’m only one man.
I’d love to see peace in this life
But I don’t have a plan.
Tell me what can I do?
I’m only one guy.
I’d love to see love conquer all and hatred run dry.
But what can I do?
Tell me what can I possibly do?

I want to laugh, but I can’t even seem to smile.
I want to win, but I don’t even make the trial.
I don’t mind the darkness, but I do prefer the light.
I don’t want to stand still while the day turns into night.

Chorus…inst…repeat chorus to end  © 1988 TF

Break rules but not like fools

Just because some authoritative power makes a rule doesn’t make the rule a good one, a just one, or a fair one. In fact, many rules, policies, and laws are downright bad. But you gotta think and ponder and examine to know which rules are good and which are bad. Before you decide to break rules you’d better be sure you’re on the right side.

But is that possible?

Short answer is yes.

But before you break authoritative rules, check yourself.

Maybe you have a lot of self-imposed rules for your life and/or the life of your loved ones. And maybe it would be a good idea to sit down, today, and re-examine whether they’re good ones or not. Here’s how you can know. If your rule shows your love for someone else, it’s a good one. If it doesn’t show love, or if it actually displays selfishness, it’s a bad one. That’s pretty much it. Simple. Right? Well, that depends on if you know HOW to show love.

So, do you?

If you’re not sure you’re any good at showing and sharing love, then I have another simple answer for you. Would you like the rules, you impose on someone else, imposed on you? If you conjure up a silly notion in your head for how someone else should live and treat you, are you willing to live that way and be treated that way? If not, you might’ve made up a bad rule.

I remember this subject came up in a conversation with a nice couple. I met in Tulsa, Oklahoma years and years ago. I was on the road full-time. And I got a booking at a nice hotel in that area. And that couple came in several nights while I was there. They heard a song I wrote, which I’ll share the lyrics to below. And on my break, we all talked about it.

In the end, we all agreed to come down to this: “If I don’t want that done to me, I shouldn’t do it to someone else.” Yeah, get together with the ones you love and talk over what’s going on. If you realize the rules aren’t working, somebody needs to say…

Let’s Break Some Rules

We play it all so careful.
We live within our means.
We don’t wear lots of jewelry or ninety dollar jeans.
We do our own repair work.
We water own lawn.
We’ve minimized the risks we take,
But now the thrill is gone

So let’s break some rules tonight…
Incite a riot in our hearts.
Let’s break some rules tonight…
Get someone else to play our parts.
Let’s create some tension;
Go out and grab some danger,
And they make say we look like total fools,
But at least for awhile…let’s break some rules.

We curse those Monday mornings
We gripe about our pay
We say we’ll make some changes
But it just can’t be today.

Chorus…

Well, who’s gonna do it if we don’t?
Who’ll make it better if we won’t?
I wonder…don’t it make you wonder?!

chorus…etc.

Friday the 13th is a day when superstition is the way

Darn it. I just broke my handheld a mirror. But it’s my own fault. Because I should’ve laid it down before I ran out the front door, under the painter’s ladder, just to chase away that pesky black cat keeps scrounging around here. Wow, if today was Friday the 13th, that would be a trifecta’s trifecta. But, as I open up my my calendar, I see it’s only…

Yikes! Friday the 13th!

Oh no! The jig is up. The ship has sailed. My goose is cooked.

Or not.

Because today could be just another day. According to Encyclopedia Britannica (That’s an academic book, for all your public school teachers) Friday the 13th, which occurs when the 13th day of a month in the Gregorian calendar falls on a Friday, happens at least once a year and sometimes up to three times a year. On average, one occurs every 212.35 days.

So it’s just plain ol’ superstition to think today is some sort of especially unlucky day. Of course, you might have a phobia. In this case, there’s a little word that describe you:

paraskevidekatriaphobia

Say that three times fast.

And as you attempt to do that, I’ll share this interesting little factoid with you that’s also from the Encyclopedia Britannica: Friday the 13th and its association with bad luck was first written about in 19th-century France. An article published in 1834 in the French literary magazine Revue de Paris by Italian author Marquis de Salvo refers to a Sicilian count who killed his daughter on Friday the 13th. The article, titled “Le Chateau de Carini,” states, “It is always Fridays and the number 13 that bring bad luck!”

Yeah, the moral of that story is never kill your daughter on an unlucky day. Yeesh.

Actually, all seriousness in front, there are other ways to look at this silly superstition. For example…

You could choose another option, simpler and true.
You could opt out of superstition…couldn’t you?

As for me, I just go on with my day as though it were just another day. And, for me, that means rhymes and reasons. Like this one…

Iridescent Lights Disappearing In Flights

There were effervescent circles,
Shining iridescent lights,
On the svelte, magenta cosmos.
Almost no one saw the sights.
But then someone with a camera,
And creative appetites,
Captured just a hint of Heaven
In those iridescent lights.   © 2022 TF

Power to the people under the steeple

People sure seem to get a big kick out of attacking Christians. From so-called “honest” atheists, to outright God haters, to muslims, and to everyday garden variety heathens. People consider us fair game and open targets. So I say power to the people under the steeple.

Yeah, power to the people who know THE Truth.

Because we are the salt and light of this world. And that Truth has set us free for all of eternity.

Those of us Christians, who share the grace message from God’s word, freely, are accused of thinking we’ve cornered the market on truth. And they don’t like us to speak in absolutes with total unblinking confidence. But that’s exactly what we can do. And should do. Because, if the Bible isn’t the word of God, and the message of Jesus isn’t true, then we are the biggest fools.

But since it is the word of God and the message is true, then we who believe in trust in it are the only ones who aren’t fools. And since we know, it’s true, and we know that God wants us to share the truth with anyone and everyone who will listen, we have an obligation to speak up. After all faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

And He gave power to the people who believe and trust in Him right there in his word. Wow, somebody should write a song about that. Oh wait. I did. Way back in the 90s. Here are the lyrics. And I’ll share the song in The Power of God’s Love podcast:

The Power of the Word

So you’ve been thinking that you’ve got a whole lot to fear
And you keep asking, “What on earth am I doin’ here?”
Well I wouldn’t tell you it’s as gloomy as you’ve heard
You just need the power of the Word

I know you’ve heard that if at first you don’t succeed
Just keep on trying and you’re bound to fill the need
But you don’t believe all that stuff applies to you
And without the power what can you do

Well the power of the Word takes an ordinary bird
And it gives him songs to sing and wings to soar
With the power of the Word even when your vision’s blurred
All your dreams will be fulfilled forevermore

Numbers are crunching and seconds are ticking on
Your hopes are fading until you wonder where they’ve gone
But you wouldn’t worry that your life could be deterred
If you had the power of the Word

Chorus

And if you’re asking, “What’s in it for me?”
Well, give up your soul and I think you will see….
Eternity…eternity…eternity……….

instrumental…repeat chorus to end     © 1993-2011 TF

Only one can win so you should let him in

Only one can win and claim the number 1 spot.

Yeah, the team that wins the Superbowl gets to be called number 1. I get to be the number 1 Tony Funderburk on the internet. Yippee! But there is only one person who gets to be called number 1 of everything. Can you guess who it is? I’ll tell you. It’s Jesus. He’s the firstborn over all creation. Nobody else ever gets to be called that. Here are some reasons He gets to be number 1.

Jesus created everything. Yep, everything. And that includes things you can see AND things you can’t. Everything important comes from Him. In fact, everything was created through Him by God the Father. And not just through Him, but FOR Him. That means everything in the whole universe belongs to Jesus. And here’s another couple of cool things to think about.

There’s a place in the Bible where it says Jesus was around before anything else was. He has always been alive. If it wasn’t for Him, nothing else could even be here. True life is only found in Him. It’s only His eternal life that keeps things going. But that’s not all.

Jesus is the only one who wins the title of the ultimate number 1 of everything,

He gets to be the head of everything. After all, He’s smarter than all the rest of us put together. So why shouldn’t He be the head? I sure don’t mind trusting Him to think better than me. Do you?

Oh, one more thing. Jesus rose from the dead! He did it without any help from anyone. But what’s even more amazing is that He said He was only the first. He said we could rise from the dead, too. Guess what? When we do, we prove He’s number 1. That’s because He’s the one who raises us up. So, when we end up rising from the dead, the whole world will see how Jesus is our Creator.

Then they’ll know there is nothing and no one more important than Him.

I’m sure you have already discovered how Jesus is the tip top of everything and everyone.  And I bet that means He already has a place in your heart. If so, tell me about it. Here’s a rhyme to help you remember:

He lived before there was a universe.
And He is the end and the beginning.
He lived a life that overcame our curse.
He is the number 1 of everything.

Truly free is for me for as far as I can see

America’s first generation citizens fought some very costly battles and a war in order for you and me to be truly free. And in less than 250 years, the rest of us have managed to destroy most of that freedom.

And citizens, these days, don’t even want to be truly free.

They prefer the socialism we now live in (or some might say in which we live). And the irony is, they prefer that even as they make claims such as, “America will never be a socialist country.”

America has been a socialist country for more decades than I’ve even been alive.

Because way back in the early part of the 20th century politicians discovered subtle ways (which aren’t even subtle anymore) to take money from those who work and give it to those who don’t.

Of course that goes against Jesus. And the world, for the most part, hates Jesus and anyone who loves him. So, putting policies, rules, and laws in place that contradict God’s teachings is just gravy on the taters to them.

And now most of the people in America are comfortable with socialism. So, my guess is you and I will never again be truly free in this world. Thank goodness, thank God we can look forward, with joyful hope, to that kind of…

Freedom

Faith working through love…
Let’s praise God for our liberty…
Christ paid off our debt…
Only in Him are we truly free.

Love leads into joy…
Law leads back into slavery…
God gave us The Way.
Just believe, and we’re truly free.

Freedom from the law that kills,
Freedom with our own free wills,
Freedom from the world of sin…
Just let Jesus in, let the joy begin
Share a hopeful grin, with the Lord “We Win”!
Praise God for what we can become
With our freedom.

What law couldn’t do
Jesus did with finality.
He rose up from the dead
And promised the same life for you and me.

So we have…
