Word pictures and whimsy so their brains aren’t flimsy

Over the years I’ve observed kids and their love for whimsy. So, I write whimsical rhymes. Fun, funny rhymes. Full of imagination. And filled with color, action, and rhythm. I want word pictures to leap into those growing little minds. And I firmly believe the words I write for kids should help them build faith, hope, and love. With a smile.

Lots of writers, these days, prefer to go the route of realism.

Yeah, they think even books for kids should “reflect the culture.” I couldn’t disagree more.

And I disagree because of those word pictures I mentioned.

Kids already get enough reality in the real world. They can watch just five minutes of a news program and see how unsafe this world is. And the so-called “news” and “entertainment” they hear and see can put some awful word pictures in their brains. So, they certainly don’t need to dive into a poem, or story, or book and find those words and images there, too.

That’s why I provide “an escape.” It’s always my goal to share optimism with kids. To write whimsical words about faith, hope, and love. All the media they consume should nurture those feelings. And it should show them dark days don’t last forever and the good guy wins. Sadly, most of what they hear and watch is like junk food for their brains.

So, I take my cue from Paul, the amazing writer you can find in the New Testament section of The Bible.

Paul’s letters show you how your dark days won’t last forever. And how the good guy wins. Plus, he talks about the awesome love that provides a happy ending for anyone who wants it. Come on, you gotta admit. That powers up some mighty nice word pictures. Right?

Of course, Paul’s writings were serious. And theological. But I believe he would appreciate my whimsical way with words. Because he would see how my goal is the same as his.

And, on that note, here are some word pictures for the kiddos to show them how unique they are.

No Other Person

Once upon a time you were one little cell
Living in your mom where you formed so well.
Then you were born and everyone knew
There was no other person who was quite like you.
You got bigger and you wondered why
A fish could swim and a bird could fly.
Every little thing was a fun, little game.
A dog was a friend, and you gave it a name.
A little more time, and you learned to read.
Each word was a friend that planted a seed
That formed an idea in your curious mind.
Then your need for knowledge left the kid behind.
That was well and good, and it had to be.
There was so much more in the world to see.
But please remember and don’t forget…
There are things in life that you might regret.
Don’t let love ever take a back seat.
Be willing to share it with whomever you meet.
Then, people might say, when you’re life is through…
There was no other person who was quite like you.

Whimsical Wednesday

Tony Funderburk Posted on April 30, 2014 by TonyApril 29, 2026
Join whimsical writer, Tony Funderburk, for a stroll down the road on a Whimsical Wednesday

OK everyboday…what do you say? How about we all pitch in and make it a whimsical Wednesday? I’ll do my part. I’ll write you a poem just for the occasion. Then, all you have to do is keep your whimsy caps on and be silly. Easy, huh?

I was just looking at some pictures of kids doing silly things kids do, and I noticed the caption for the picture mentioned it was a Wednesday. So, of course my mind when into alliteration mode (as it often does) and I came up with the idea to write something silly just for the fun of it. No other reason. No need to make sense. And no nothing else. Just to be silly.

What would you add to this whimsical Wednesday wackiness.

Leave comments or send me an email, and I’ll post your words here. In the meantime, have a fun and…

Whimsical Wednesday

Whimsical Wednesday…wonderful breeze
Leaving us breathless…swaying like trees.
Syllables settle inside our ears
Sounding quite silly…calming our fears
Making us mimic cows in the field…
Funnybones flapping…giggles revealed
Whimsical Wednesday…tickles the tongue
Lilting and loving…keeping us young.
Melodies mingle with bubbles and dots…
Whimsical Wednesday living in thoughts.

Music Pajamas Ebook For Kids

Tony Funderburk Posted on October 30, 2012 by TonyFebruary 27, 2025

A few months back I shared the lyrics to one of my latest lullaby songs “Music Pajamas“. It’s part of the “Bedtime Buckaroos” collection of western themed lullaby songs. And now it’s a picture book…one of my latest ebooks for kids on the Kindle platform on Amazon.com  Here’s a picture of Meep, the lead character of the book…

Meep, the main character of "Music Pajamas" the latest one of singer songwriter & children's writer, Tony Funderburk's ebooks for kids

Meep’s a kid who couldn’t sleep because he thought the whole world would go away if he did. That’s why I drew him so wide-eyed. I really had a good time building a story around the song. And it was fun to see the characters come to “life” in living color. I never thought of myself as an illustrator. To me, I was always a singer…a songwriter…a writer who didn’t need or have time to draw.

Then, I decided to write books for kids, and I knew I wanted ’em to be picture books with short, whimsical stories. I figured the best place to start would be to write stories to go with my music for kids. And it seemed logical to have pictures to go with ’em. So, I decided picture books would be the ticket. Only thing was…I knew I wanted to get things moving along…and collaborating with an artist would most certainly take a lot more time. There’d be the initial discussion to convey my ideas, the first drawing, the follow-up evaluation and critique, the revisions, etc. etc. etc.

So…my solution? Why not get a digital drawing tablet, some software to go along with it, and give it a go myself.

That’s what happened. And now I have 4 ebooks for kids, with about 17 more in the pipeline. “Music Pajamas” is the the third one I’ve published on the Kindle platform on Amazon.com.  I hope you’ll check it out. If you do, would you please leave me a review there? Or leave me a comment here on my blog. It would help so much.
