Friend of mine who's better than a valentine

So, there was this friend of mine who always said some pretty radical stuff. Like “abhor what is evil.” Well, I looked up the word “abhor.” And do you know what it means? Basically to hate something with all your might. Yikes!

Yeah, this friend of mine could really pour gasoline on a fire.

But don’t be too quick to jump on his case. Because he also said stuff like “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” But then he followed that up with some more gasoline on the fire by saying, “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” Wow, some might think his ego needs a reality check.

In fact, I can almost hear somebody ask, “Who died and made you God?”

And to say that is the understatement of the century would be an understatement.

Because (did I mention?) this friend of mine just so happened to be killed for the radical stuff he said. But, to the consternation of his accusers and killers, he had already predicted his own death. And do you know what my egomaniac friend did on the last day before they killed him?

He washed the dirty feet of others. And he comforted others as they rambled on about their petty problems.

Then, as he was being put to death, in a most horrific way (even after being found innocent in kangaroo court), he still prayed to God to forgive the ones who killed him. He said they didn’t know what they were doing.

On this first Sunday, in the month of February of 2024, I hope you’ll remember my friend Jesus in your prayers. If you can’t do it for Him, do it for yourself. Because He’s so much more than just a friend. He created you and me.

And knowing what He did to provide me something I don’t deserve inspired me to look out a window, during a particularly colorful sunset, and write…

Friend Of Mine

As I look between these bars tonight
And see the blue and red firelight,
I’m reminded of the life in me
That was put there so creatively.
And I’m humbled by the endless love
From the God who will raise me above
Even all this glorious design.
Yeah, I’m glad He is a friend of mine.

Stay tuned,
