Bottomless pit ain't the half of it

Imagine being thrown into a bottomless pit. Or maybe you think you already know how that feels because of your job. Or some other boring, repetitious part of your life. I certainly hope that’s not the case. But lots of people DO suffer such slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune.

However, they still don’t know what a real bottomless pit is.

And let’s you and I hope they never find out. Deal? Because my guess is (and the descriptions in the book of the Revelation are) it’s worse than even anything Thanos could think up. And that’s because what goes on in that bottomless pit will go on forever.

(side note: forever is even longer than you think it is)

A guy named John saw all kinds of amazing AND terrible things related to and connected with that pit. His “vision” included turning around to see “seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.”

Of course, John saw and heard a lot more. Some mysterious sounding stuff, too. But he wasn’t left in the dark to wonder and stay confused.

And this short passage shows what I mean:

“Why did you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns. The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.”

Now, my belief is probably WAY different than yours when it comes to that last book in the Bible. Because I don’t believe it’s information written in stone. And what I mean is, none of it is ordained or pre-ordained by God to happen. In fact, my guess is that our loving and merciful Creator would love it if none of the Revelation came to pass.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a Book of Life. I just believe you can get your name in it even if it isn’t in there right now. And that’s why I wrote a song about it back in 2000.

It’s included, with a dozen other songs, in the Amen Songbook Journal. Here’s an audio sampler, ironically in a video:

Just in case you can’t see the video, here’s a link to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKoArd9Sd9c

OK, don’t get lost in the Amazon bottomless pit of products.

Click or tap on the links I’ve shared and go get your own Amen Songbook Journal. Right now! And…

Get your name in the best of places.
Get your name in the Book of Life.
Leave it here where the world erases,
Or you can get your name in the Book of Life.

Secret link maker makes one for the savvy taker

I’m a secret link maker. And here’s a short Amazon book description to prove it: “When you open up your brand new Amen songbook, you’ll discover more than just lyrics. Because there’s a secret link to a free download of all the songs. And not only that, you’ll be able to jot down all your best ideas and inspirations before they slip away. Of course, you should keep your new journal forever. Because you never can tell when one of your own ideas might be ready for publishing, too.”

But I guess I’m not such a secret link maker since I shared that with you.

Well, that’s how the digital cookie crumbles I guess.

It was back in 2000 when I put together the collection of songs I included on my Amen CD. I know, if you weren’t born then, you might not even know what a CD is. But, believe me, they were awesome. Actually, they still are. But they’re no longer in vogue. Hmm…come to think of it, the phrase “no longer in vogue” is probably no longer in vogue.

Anyway…

Included in that collection of songs was one where I asked the same question souls in Heaven asked God. They had been killed for standing up for God. And “they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”)

Wow, you’d think if they’re in Heaven they’d have nothing but forgiveness on their minds. But nay nay. They wanted (actually it’s a prediction that they WILL want, in the future) some serious vengeance.

It’s kinda like, in the movies, when some guy, who’s minding his own business, gets messed with. And the bad guys even assault him, or his girlfriend or wife. Or maybe they even do the most unthinkable thing of all and kill his dog. When any of that happens, what do you immediately want in that movie?

Oh yeah. Vengeance! Justice! Payback!

Right?!

Of course it’s right. Who doesn’t wanna see the bad guys get what’s comin’ to ’em? It’s part of your American upbringing. But even WAY more than that, it’s part of your DNA. Or a better way to put it is that it’s written on the tablet of your heart.

Point is, even if you keep it squelched way way down in the bottom of your heart, you know right from wrong. And you know certain wrong should be punished even to death.

So, all I went and done was write a song about it. And when you get yourself the Amen Songbook and Journal, your friendly secret link maker has made a special secret link where you can download all the songs in the book. And they won’t cost you extra. Nope. Because I wouldn’t do that to you. I mean, sseriously. How could I sell you the book with all those lyrics and hold out on the music?

Short answer? I couldn’t. And I didn’t. So, go get your journal. Right now. Use it write down your own inspirations. Or take notes on your pastor’s teachings. Or jot down your grocery list. It’s your book. I’m not makin’ up any rules on what you do with it. So, you’re gonna get it. Right? Ok, good. But…

How Long Till?

How long ‘til we see the vengeance?
How long ‘til You make things right?
Lord, how long ‘til the trumpet blows
And calls us into flight?

How long ‘til we see the Savior?
How long ‘til the end of night?
Yes, and how long ‘til Your trumpet blows
And takes us out of sight?

(Chorus from the song, How Long Till, in the Amen Songbook collection)

Superstitious words from one of those songbirds

OK, get ready. ‘Cause some superstitious words and references are gonna be comin’ at you (gesundheit). Oops, one slipped in there already.

Yep. Gesundheit and “bless you” can be superstitious words.

Did you know that people, down through the centuries, have believed (and possibly still believe) that a sneeze can cause your soul to escape your body through your nose.

Yikes! If that’s true, what could possibly stop that from happening? I know you’re ahead of me here. And you’re right. Two simple (superstitious) words. “Bless you.” Yeah, those same people, who think your soul can escape through your nose, also believe you can keep the devil from claiming the sneezer’s soul with those eight letters in two words.

Well, they either think that or the total opposite. You read that right. Others believed (and some still believe) that evil spirits use a sneeze to jump into a person’s body.

Wow, those evil spirits must have some really fast reflexes.

And would you believe that other people believe your heart stops during a sneeze? Yeah, those people believe that when you say “bless you,” it’s a way to welcome that person back to life. That seems a little crazy to me. But I see crazy pretty much wherever I look. So, don’t go by my perspective.

My guess is that you say “bless you” just by habit.

Well, that’s if you say it. Maybe you don’t. I don’t. And I don’t even tend to acknowledge when someone says it to me after I sneeze. Because, well, I’m not into superstitious words (knock on wood) and luck.

The main thing (well, the main thing for what I’m talking about right now) is there’s no such thing as luck. Good or bad. So, you can’t do anything to bring on good or bad luck. And you can’t say anything to protect against it. Because, uh, it doesn’t exist. If you believe it does, bless your heart.

Just so you know, if you’re ever around me, and I sneeze, and you say “bless you,” I’m not gonna call you out on the carpet. Because my guess is you’ll just be saying that out of habit. And if you use any other superstitious words like that, I’ll assume you haven’t really considered how they originated. I hope I’m right about that. Until we know for sure, please…

Keep Your Fingers Crossed

Some say we can make the luck we need.
Some say…it’s destiny.
Yeah, some say it’s all in the draw of cards.
Maybe for them, but not for me

I know I will never know it all.
I know I’ve got to see it through.
And I know I’ve only got one chance.
I’ll take that chance, if I can take it with you.

Keep your fingers crossed; I just might find the answer.
Keep your fingers crossed; I just might find a way.
Is it faith that leads me or faith that blinds me?
Either way I’m lost,
Unless you free the heart of me
And keep your fingers crossed.
Keep your fingers crossed.

Some say I should play another part.
Some say give it up; let it go.
How can I explain what’s in my heart?
How can I make them know?
Oh, how can I make them know?

Sometimes I wish I was someone else.
Sometimes, but not for long.
I want you to help me chase this dream.
Oh yeah, it’s you. You keep me strong.

Chorus…inst…repeat chorus

Keep your fingers crossed.

Need some time for more than a rhyme

I just need some time. Who hasn’t said that at least a time or two?

And it becomes an even scarcer commodity the older you get. Plus, it starts to zoom past at practically the speed of light. Of course, a little six-year-old who’s waiting for an ice cream cone might beg to differ. But what does an impatient six-year-old know about anything?

Anyway…

When you need some time, where do you get it?

It’s not like it’s right down at the Dollar General, or as we hear in the Funderhaus like to call it, the D.G. But the good news is, it’s in the same place everybody else finds it.

All around you. In front of you. And behind you.

But there’s one thing you can’t do with time. And you’ll never be able to do it. Even if you assure yourself a place in paradise filled with endless time. And that one thing is: Hold on to it.

Because, just as you reach out to grab it, it passes. And the time you wanted to hold on to is gone forever. So, you’re left with the future coming at you like a meteor. And you have to face it like a heart attack. So, what can you do about it?

Short answer? Nothing.

Long answer? Still nothing.

Right answer?

Be glad you exist at all. And be grateful you’re aware of your own existence. And most of all, be thankful your Creator loves you enough to supply you with endless, glorious time, if you want it.

I sure do. Because, this life, on planet Earth, ain’t gonna last a whole lot longer. And the chaos, confusion, and futility that fills up this world, just leads me to say and sing…

All I Need Is Some Time

I’ve no one to hold and nothing to say,
But give me some time, and I’ll find me a way
To know what I need and to feel what I know…
To flow with my thoughts and to let my thoughts flow.

All I need is some time to hold in my hands.
All I want is some time to hold in my arms.

I used to be cruel. Now I try to be kind.
I used to be hard. Now I’m easy to find.
There’s so much to change, and I’ve changed quite a lot.
I know what I want, and I want what I’ve got.

All I need is some time to hold in my hands.
All I want is some time to hold in my arms.

And all I need is some time.
All I want is some time.

The pack leader and not the bottom feeder

The pack leader gets to call the shots. Now, THERE’S a short sentence with an acerbic twist. Especially when you consider how much focus there is on “shots” these days.

Did you see the movie, “Call of the Wild,” with Harrison Ford and an animated dog named Buck? It was a bittersweet movie that followed Buck’s story. He was a big, crossbreed of a St. Bernard and a Scotch Shepherd. And at the start of the movie you see him enjoying an easy-going life in California, in the 1890’s.

But it’s not long before his life of leisure is gone when he’s stolen from his happy home. Worse than that Buck is deported to Skagway, Alaska and sold to a dog sled delivery service owner.

Buck’s good nature actually gets him in trouble with the lead dog in the sled team. But he eventually wins the leader position, and the other dogs are glad to follow him.

Sadly, Buck’s hard times weren’t over. And he went through a lot more challenges. Not the least of which was being forced into dog fights. Somewhere along the way, he meets up with Harrison Ford’s character. And I won’t tell you the rest of it so you enjoy it for yourself. Just wanted to illustrate a particular point.

Yeah, when it comes to shots, be the pack leader.

And just because that can also refer to dogs doesn’t mean you should be the pack leader of a bunch of dogs. Canine OR human. Of course, if you’re not comfortable taking the lead, then at least find the pack leader you can trust.

And that’s exponentially more difficult than it ever was in American history. Well, to be more precise, if you’re gonna rely on broken people, it’s way more difficult than ever. So, I recommend you don’t rely on broken people.

That’s not to say you’ll never find anyone you can count on. But you’ll never find anyone you can ALWAYS count on. And that’s not a defeatist or fatalist point of view. It’s just reality. Of course, it’s true. Because everybody else has to live their lives, too.

But I’m saying all this to point out how it’s better to be a leader.

And the best human leaders are the ones who are consistent Jesus followers. Because they understand the only way you can lead well is when you learn by example. And the only perfect man who ever lived is certainly the best example you could ever have.

The overwhelming amount of evidence says the Christian message is true.

So, to continue with the analogy, you’re on the right track when the pack leader you follow is Jesus. He’s the only True Alpha AND Omega Male!

Be like the dog in the movie, and Buck the worldly trends. Fight for your right to freedom and ward off the hounds of hell.

Search me for the deeper things.
Fill me from Your living well.
Free me from the ways of man.
Take me off the path to Hell.
Listen to my fervent prayer.
Bless me so that I can bless.
Change me with Your mighty Word.
Spare me with Your tenderness.

Moment in time with a musical rhyme

It’s probably just me. But certain old songs can take me right back to almost a particular moment in time. And I don’t mean a phase of my life. I mean an actual mental snapshot of a particular moment of my life. A great example of what I mean is the song, “Ramblin’ Rose.”

And that moment in time was in the back seat of my Dad’s car.

I remember riding in the back seat of that ’54 Chevrolet Belair, listening to the ol’ AM radio tuned in to one of Dad’s favorite channels. And on that particular day, Nat King Cole sang “Ramblin’ Rose.” From the start there’s a reverberating choir singing along in the background. And Mr. Cole’s signature piano carries through the parts in between the lyrics.

As a grownup, I can now see it’s a simple song (with a key change in the middle) of what appears to be unrequited love. But, as a kid, it just had a sound my ears and heart leaned into. And it still does. Only now, when I hear it, I see the back of the front seat of that ol’ Chevy. And the back of Dad’s head. And the blue skies and billowy clouds floating past those big windows lined in real chrome. Check out these lyrics:

Ramblin’ Rose

Ramblin’ Rose, ramblin’ Rose,
Why you ramble, no one knows
Wild and wind blown, that’s how you’ve grown
Who can cling to a ramblin’ Rose?

Ramble on, ramble on.
When your ramblin’ days are gone,
Who will love you with a love true,
When your ramblin’ days are gone?

Ramblin’ Rose, ramblin’ Rose,
Why I want you, heaven knows.
Though I love you with a love true,
Who can cling to a ramblin’ rose?

Ramblin’ rose, ramblin’ Rose,
Why I want you, heaven knows.
Though I love you with a love true
Who can cling to a ramblin’ Rose?

See what I mean? The lyrics are so simple. Just a short hint of a story. But with Nat‘s smooth vocal style, the background singers, and that nostalgic piano lilt, I go back to that moment in time. Every time.

Too bad America isn’t like that anymore.

And a stark example of that includes the great-nephew of Nat King Cole. I just saw an article that reported Tracy Cole, who was 31, was stabbed to death in the past week. Right on the street, on a Thursday morning, in Atlanta.

The report also said, “No arrests have been made and investigators don’t have a motive.”

But here’s an even sadder part. A friend said, “He was one of those guys who was always around with positive energy, and it was always so good to be around Tracy.” And a senior pastor said, “Tracy had that personality that just really transcended culture, it transcended race, it transcended class.” And another friend said, “He was always laughing, always smiling with his corny jokes. Everybody loved him.”

So, obviously Tracy Cole was liked and appreciated. But obviously not “everybody” loved him. And in the end, it didn’t matter that, “Tracy made a friend of everyone. He was family. And he was more than a young man in the community. He was that child who walked the floors and aisles of the church. He just brought an abundance of joy everywhere he went.”

No. None of that mattered.

His entire life, here on Earth, which was only 31 years, came down to that moment in time at that intersection on the streets of Atlanta.

And it didn’t matter that he was the great-nephew of the great Nat King Cole. It didn’t matter that he was “also a second cousin of late singer Natalie Cole.” Or that he had “traveled the world with his jazz musician grandfather, Freddy Cole.”

It also didn’t matter that, as that senior pastor said, “He had so much more ahead of him and was doing wonderful things.”

The only thing that mattered, as Tracy Cole lay there on that street, was whether he had chosen to put his faith in himself or his Creator. Because faith in self leads to an eternity of unrequited love. But faith in the Creator of Heaven and Earth leads to the eternal bloom of every Ramblin’ Rose (or Roy).

Optimistic guy with a focus on the why

America’s best days are NOT ahead. Absolutely NOT. And anyone who believes they are is either a politician who wants to steal, uh…earn your vote, or someone who hasn’t seen anything past their neighborhood. And I’m generally an optimistic guy. Not because of my country. Because of my Creator.

But even an optimistic guy should be able to see how bad things are.

I just spent about a month driving over 4000 miles, most of the way across the “united” states AND back. And what I noticed, in every city and town I crossed is a gigantic amount of evidence. You can see the evidence on houses. From the roofs to the basements. And from the driveways to the cars parked in them.

The evidence I’m talking about is neglect. And wear and tear. And broken windows, cracked cement, dead grass and flowers, porches with piles of junk on them. The evidence is in totally run-down neighborhoods. Street zombies looking for the next place to hole up for the night. Cars held together with duct tape and spray foam. I’m not making this up. I saw it.

As awful as it was, what was even more awful was that I wasn’t surprised.

Because we live in a country where politicians won’t work within a budget. Murder is rampant, especially the murder of unborn children. Some moron, masquerading as president of the country steals money (with the aid of just about all the other so-called “elected” officials) from U.S. citizens to send to a country where he has questionable ties, at the very least.

And all of that happens, almost effortlessly. Because we have a nation filled with dope smokers, opioid addicts, and scaredy-cat screen watchers who believe the latest “cron” will destroy all mankind unless we wear face diapers.

You can’t reasonably disagree with me.

Because it’s REAL. I’ve seen it. And you probably have, too. Even if you haven’t seen as much as I just saw over the past few weeks.

But that sad reality doesn’t mean I have to give in and give up.

Far from it.

I can do something.

I can sing and write words and music about…

  • How special our planet is among all the known and unknown parts of the Universe
  • The glorious sensation of a barefoot walk in a field of grass
  • How love can erase tears
  • The soul quenching gifts found in dreamers, poets, and visionaries

But optimism and those soul-quenching gifts are meaningless, and even non-existent, without a meaningful explanation of their origin. And there’s only one meaningful explanation for all of creation.

Your Creator.

Again, you can’t reasonably disagree with me. At least, not if you prefer a life filled with hope. If you don’t, then I hope that you change that sooner rather than later.

Stay tuned,

Weighs a ton doesn't mean what it used to

Maybe you’ve experienced something like this. You haven’t had your morning javalavazingzing. And you gotta get going. So, you decide to get dressed, grab your gear, and head out to the minivan (or for those of you who still drive ordinary vehicles, your car). And it feels like your computer bag feels like it weighs a ton. And your eyelids insist on their half-mast status.

Ain’t it weird how a lack of coffee equals gear that weighs a ton?

And your logic and reason abilities (impaired though they might be) tell you your gear doesn’t actually weigh a ton. But the “weighs a ton” hyperbole still makes it way to your lips. And anyone who hears the phrase nods in agreement. Because no one doesn’t understand the connection.

Yeah, human communication is a weird (but wonderful) concept to ponder.

But our weird and wonderful communication skills have carried over into the amazing world of Random Access Memory, aka: RAM.

And speaking of IBM (we were, weren’t we?), today marks 67 years since they introduced their 305 RAMAC. It was a Random Access Memory Accounting Computer. And it was “an electronic general purpose data processing machine that maintained business records on a real-time basis.”

Apparently IBM produced more than a thousand of them from 1956 to 1961. And, by today’s standards of companies like Apple producing millions of computers a year, that doesn’t seem like a very big number. But they stopped production in 1961. And the reason is clear. Each one weighed a ton. Literally.

Yeah, coffee or no coffee.

If you wanted a 305 RAMAC, you’d need at least a couple of college hunks to help you install it.

So, next time your computer bag (or your spouse) “weighs a ton,” thank your Creator it’s not a RAMAC.

See there. Blessings are all around you. Even if you have to time travel back to 1956 to see them. So, I hope you’ll use your RAM to remember that as you go through your day and the rest of your week.

You are blessed to be alive.
Keep that blessing in your heart.
And don’t let it slip away.
Every day’s a brand new start.

Stay tuned,

In the past went by so fast but the life will last

A friend of mine died two years ago, today, September 12, 2021. But he wasn’t just a friend. He was the pastor of the church I attended (and led praise and worship) for a long time. And he was blessed with the ability to dive deep into the information in the Bible. And rightly divide the word of Truth. It’s so weird to talk about him in the past tense. Because he had a powerful presence.

And today makes me remember another day in the past, too.

It was Pastor Appreciation Day back in 2010. And I certainly appreciated his Bible teaching skills. So, I didn’t look for a special song to acknowledge him that Sunday. I wrote one. It was a song that showed appreciation for who he was AND Who he represented.

Because my friend, the pastor, was controversial. To say the least. And if I shared his name, and if you did a search online, you’d find a long list of despicable so-called “news sources” mocking him. Even in death. But, as another friend of mine said, “If the world still hates you when you die, you must’ve done well.”

I have no doubt that, sometime on September 12, 2021, my friend heard, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Because he dedicated much of his life to sharing God’s word with anyone who’d listen. I updated the lyrics of appreciation to account for his earthly life that’s now in the past.

We Appreciate You Doing That

When you chose to serve the Lord,
You didn’t know everything you were in for.
You couldn’t know how long it would last,
Or what your journey through life had in store.

But you didn’t let it stop you.
You found The Way to keep going.
Truth and Life and Persistence…
They’re the seeds you kept sowing.

And we appreciate you doing that.

You didn’t choose the dark, wide path.
You never ran with the “popular people”
Or raise a fortune to build up a church
Made of lies with a high, golden steeple.

But you work to spread the Gospel
And tell the world about Jesus,
And how He’s all that really matters,
And how the world cannot please us.

And we appreciate you doing that.

We know you didn’t prefer the battle.
There must have been times when it got old.
But your life, here, sure made a difference.
You shared His Story as it should be told.

And we appreciate you doing that.

Creatures of curiosity moving with such velocity

You humans are certainly creatures of curiosity. Especially those of you who’ve been fortunate to have been born in a “free” society. Yeah, I’ve said this before. Americans tend to be very image-bound and sound-byte-gagged.

First, there’s what seems to be the picture of success, on TV and in the movies. And that’s almost completely fake. And that’s bad enough. But then, there are too many who compare themselves to that picture. And that fantasy “beauty” and piles of “stuff” can stir up feelings of inadequacy.

That why I say creatures of curiosity.

Why would you want to compare yourself to some poor slob in the movies? And I say poor slob because their millions in the bank just postpone their soul’s bankruptcy. At least if they’ve put their faith in this world. And most of them have.

But you’re not the sum total of your dollars, beauty, or “stuff.” You’re not the sum total of your monikers you wear through this life. And you’re not the sum total of the varied opinions about you. Those opinions don’t make you. And they shouldn’t break you. Here’s what I recommend…

  • Work to produce…not for the money.
  • Play to relax…not to escape.
  • Laugh to enjoy…not to cover up.
  • Love to give…not to acquire.
  • And live to be thankful…not to compare.

You ARE the sum total of where you position yourself for eternity. Don’t just be another one of those false-faced creatures of curiosity.

Thank God  (He Didn’t Leave It Up To You)

In the best of times, where’s the challenge?
And in the worst of times, where’s the choice?
In the fevered pitch, where’s the silence?
When the love is breached, where’s the voice?
Could you have your very life…taken from you
While the world stood at your feet?
Wouldn’t that completely stop and numb you?
Wouldn’t you admit defeat?
Well, thank God; He didn’t leave it up to you

In the darkest hours, who’s your Father?
And in the scheme of things, who’s the one?
In the best laid plans, who’s the Spirit?
When your heart is healed, who’s the Son?
Could you let your very blood…be taken
For your friends who’d run away?
Wouldn’t all your faith and hope be shaken?
Would you even think to pray?
Well, thank God; He didn’t leave it up to you.

Celestial sphere far away from here

OK, I’m gonna get all astronomical on you now. So, if you’re not interested in perspectives about things like astronomy and navigation, you should probably tune me out for now. Because you might glaze over as I gab on about a particular celestial sphere.

Before I go on, here’s a complex definition of a celestial sphere:

“In astronomy and navigation, a celestial sphere is an abstract sphere that has an arbitrarily large radius and is concentric to Earth.” Are you still with me? Good. Here’s more details about it:

“All objects in the sky can be conceived as being projected upon the inner surface of the celestial sphere, which may be centered on Earth or the observer. If centered on the observer, half of the sphere would resemble a hemispherical screen over the observing location.”

So, admit it. You’re more intrigued than you ever thought you could be on this subject. Right?

Before you get too excited, remember, the celestial sphere is a conceptual tool.

It’s “used in spherical astronomy to specify the position of an object in the sky without consideration of its linear distance from the observer.” AND, “the celestial equator divides the celestial sphere into northern and southern hemispheres.”

OK, never mind. I know you don’t care about all that. And neither do I.

But I’ll bet you’d like the picture I shared, about 10 years ago, that showed what baffled scientists are calling the Saturn Rings River. The picture showed pitted areas on the surface. Even though many have speculated the surface is gaseous. But the picture clearly depicts something more along the lines of metamorphic materials.

Also, you can see where the Saturn Rings River might have once had tributaries. Another explanation of the wider, dark areas might be an aquifer from which the headwaters sprang forth.

Here’s what I said about it, 10 years ago:

“At the top of the photo (we’ll call it North for the sake of easy recognition) you’ll see what appears to be an estuarial area. This could have been an inlet from a larger bay or even ocean at one time billions and billions of years ago. Or it could even provide an answer or missing link to where all other celestial bodies in our solar system originated.

Here’s the point. We’ve never had such clear, high definition images of any of Saturn’s rings or other surface areas before. So this one renews the spark of imagination and storytelling in anti-creationist scientists all over the world. (emphasis on imagination and storytelling, read on…)

After all…just think of the endless possibilities, hypotheses, and suppositions one can derive from unconfirmed truths.”

And that’s how so many stories of Earth’s origin come to be. From the imagination of the majority of people who despise the inconvenience of the young Earth creationist perspective. They can see a picture, like the one I shared, and create an entire backstory for a celestial sphere or its satellites.

And just so you know, the picture I shared is actually a closeup of the cream on top of my coffee.

Fast Forward

Fast forward to the scene by the ocean
You’re shattered and fatigued with emotion
Fast forward to a time of reflection
Then you can use your hindsight direction
To help explain that angst and depression
Fast forward past your dreamland expression

Can’t you just imagine…how it all might be
If we end up dying and find out that we live
Can’t you hear the questions… “How could we not see?”
“Where’s the one in charge?” and “How much do I give”

Chorus

In awe of all creation and how it all could be
The fairy tale illusions increase with every year
The wrinkled plans expand…exponentially
Until one day, perhaps, a duck becomes a deer

chorus

What does this all mean?
And why should we care?
That we didn’t come from slime!
And there’s a God out there!
Fast forward!

Bad attitude, no gratitude, in this or any other latitude

I’ve got a bad attitude when it comes to bad attitude. And, yes, I know how that sentence looks and sounds. But the first bad is more along the lines of Michael Jackson’s song, “Bad.” and the second is more along the lines of Huey Lewis and the News’ song, “Sometimes Bad is Bad.”

How’s that for using songs to define a bad attitude?

Yeah, I liked it too.

Anyway…

For years I’ve also noticed a lot of bad attitude in the public as a whole. So many people demanding that someone else, or the government, or a corporation, or a courtroom give them what they deserve. Yeesh.

Alright, I’m gonna preach for just a minute. There’s a way you can have eternal life in Heaven, something you don’t deserve, by the way. Yeah, you can live in paradise with your Creator. Because Jesus, who is God the Son, came to earth and took on human flesh. This was about 2000 years ago. He lived about 33 years and suffered a horrible death. But He resurrected in only 3 days to show us He had paid for all the sins any of us would ever commit.

And the short sermon is over. You can take your fingers out of your ears or your hands off your eyes now.

Naturally (and I use that word for clarity and emphasis) if you don’t believe this information, you’re free to disregard. But if you do, I urge you to have the fullest life you can possibly muster. Do everything your heart desires. And pay no mind to any consequences, as long as you’re getting everything you want. And I urge you to do this because whatever time you have on earth will be the only time of any pleasure you’ll experience.

You’ll exist forever somewhere…

You’ll get what you deserve and be king or queen of your own universe of one (with no body and no spirit of life). Well, that’s one option. And here’s the second option.

You’ll live forever in paradise with your Creator because of His awesome grace. You don’t deserve it. But He freely gives it to anyone who wants it. If I were you, I’d choose the second option. Heck, I’d even choose it if I were me. And I don’t think it’s a bad attitude to feel that way.

Here’s how the whole notion fit into a song by my favorite songwriter:

Give Me What I Deserve

You gave me life…
Gave me love, and gave me freedom.
You took my sins…
And You nailed “˜em, and You beat ‘em…

‘Cause this person who you bought never had the nerve.
So I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

You gave me hope,
Gave me bread and living water.
You gave your blood…
When I led you to the slaughter.

But you never even fought or let your focus swerve.
And I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

Lord, don’t give me…what I deserve.
If I stand in the middle of the road,
Nudge me to Your side.
Lord, don’t give me…what I deserve…
‘Cause I’m the reason and the cause
Why Jesus died…But then He rose again!

You gave me joy…
Gave Your word you’d leave me never.
You gave Your life so that I could live forever.

And on this earthly azure dot I can choose to serve.
So I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

Right is might when it's really right

I stumbled on this little blurb, this morning, as I did some research. It was about a fairly well-known book. And it said: “Might Is Right or The Survival of the Fittest” is a book by pseudonymous author Ragnar Redbeard, generally believed to be a pen name of Arthur Desmond. First published in 1896, it advocates amorality, consequentialism and psychological hedonism.” (They left out the Oxford comma. Not me.) And it immediately made me think the opposite. Right is might. Because it IS…with a caveat.

Right is might when it’s really right.

And that sort of statement drives relativists up a (tolerant and diverse) wall.

But what sounds mightier? An eternal life in paradise with the one, true, living, loving Creator of us all? Or an amoral, consequential, and psychologically hedonistic life of about 70 or 80 years?

“I pick door Number 1, Bob!”

The trouble lies where obfuscation of truth (and THE Truth) thrives. And that’s everywhere people prefer feelings over logic. And self over sacrifice.

So, when you stand up and say there is such a thing as absolute truth, seething anger rises up from the masses like the dark smoke when lava meets the sea.

But here’s the thing.

When I say there IS a Creator, and that He provided only one Way to eternal life, I’m either right or wrong. No gray area. And if you say the opposite of what I say, you’re either right or wrong. No gray area. Technically we could both be wrong. But we can’t both be right. And I submit that I’m right.

And, in this case, right is might. Because it acknowledges the source of life and truth. But words mean things. And ideas have consequences. If I’m wrong, the consequences are just eternal darkness. But…

What If I’m Right?

You think it’s wrong to talk of only one Way.
Live and let live is something you always say.
How could there be a God who no one can see?
When bad things happen, you say “Where can He be?”

You want some proof; maybe a word or a sign
That our existence could be all by design.
I say the proof is in the feel of a song.
But it’s invisible so you say I’m wrong.

But what if I’m right? What if it’s true
All of these things I’ve been sayin’ to you?
What if you die and it’s not the end?
What if your life is nothing you can defend?
You think I’m wrong, and that I don’t walk in the light,
But what if I’m right?

So many people living inside a dream
Making a choice that even God won’t redeem.
I say choose Jesus because this life’s not long.
You say it’s nonsense, and you tell me I’m wrong.

But what if I’m right?

Farther away from the maker of day

I remember two small wall hangings my Grandmother had above her stove in her kitchen. One said, “No matter where I serve my guests, it seems they like my kitchen best.” And the other one I like even better. It said, “The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.” And I remember her telling me that when it seems like you’re getting farther away from something or someone, it can feel like it’s one step forward and two steps back.

But she had a solution to that farther away problem.

When you feel like life is one step forward and two steps back, turn around and walk backwards.

Yeah, you gotta think about that for a second or two. But your brain made sense of it immediately even if you didn’t.

Anyway…

I read some interesting news about a classic rocker that I wouldn’t have guessed. And I remember his big hit song that’ll stick in your brain when you give it a listen. But check out what he wrote about himself:

“…I was very successful. My records were selling like hot cakes! I played on the entire 1966 American tour of the Rolling Stones. And I played music with John Lennon and became friends with Jimi Hendrix and later Stevie Ray Vaughn. I played on most of the records of Steely Dan, recorded with Barbara Streisand. And began writing and touring with Cyndi Lauper. Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band told me that my guitar playing influenced him to play slide guitar. I have to admit, some people I worked with seemed pretty ungodly. People like KISS and Alice Cooper.”

And this guy has some impressive credentials.

Not the least of which is a Number 1 Billboard hit when he was only 17. And his hit song knocked none other than “Yesterday,” by the Beatles, off that position on the chart.

Plus, he was the producer on one of my favorite all-time rock instrumentals, “Frankenstein,” by the Edgar Winter Group. And he produced other gold and platinum albums by Edgar and his brother Johnny Winter.

In addition to the other artists I’ve already mentioned, this guy has appeared on numerous albums with Richie Havens, Todd Rundgren Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand, Mason Ruffner, and Madam X.

And get this. In the mid-80s, he discovered Weird Al Yankovic. And he produced Weird Al’s music for Grammy-winning albums and videos. In fact, according to information on his own website, his productions of the Weird Al’s Michael Jackson parodies, the No. 1 hit “Eat It”, and “Who’s Fat”, have been Yankovic’s most successful recordings.

But here’s the coolest part of all.

With all the music business success and accolades he’s received, he figured out something about himself that he didn’t like. As he put it, “I was getting farther and farther from the Lord.”

His so-called “earthly fame and fortune” took him down the all-too-familiar path so many celebrities crash through. Drugs and alcohol. But here’s what he said he did that kept him from going farther away from God:

“It all came to a head in 1997; and even though my troubles at the time seemed overwhelming, I finally remembered there is someone to turn to, our Savior, the Lord, Jesus Christ. I got down on my knees and started to praying. I asked for forgiveness. I asked for advice. And I asked for Divine guidance and help. The Lord keeps His promises. Ask and you shall receive. He gave me the answers I needed. And the strength to do what I had to do.”

And so, Rick Derringer, whose band “The McCoys” bumped the Beatles off the Number 1 spot in 1965 with “Hang On Sloopy,” got back on track. You might say he got his Rock and Roll to Hoochie Koo. Well, you probably wouldn’t say that. But I couldn’t resist.

So, in case you didn’t know it before, now you know some of the rest of the cool story of Rick Derringer. And I guess you can blame me if you walk around with “Hang On Sloopy” in your brain, today.

Hang on, Sloopy, Sloopy, hang on
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)
Hang on, Sloopy, Sloopy, hang on
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)
Hang on, Sloopy, Sloopy, hang on

Borealis ring is a fine-lookin' thing

It’s Sunday morning. So, here’s an obvious question. What do you call it when spirits play ball with a walrus head? Oh wait. Nix that question. What I meant to ask was, what do you call it when supernatural maidens take dead warriors into the afterlife. Never mind that last question. It sounds a little bit too mystic. Try this one. What do you call it when solar winds bombard nitrogen and oxygen molecules with lots of energy? Yeah, NOW I see your face light up. Because you know I’m probably talking about an aurora borealis ring. Good for you. Gold star for enthusiasm.

But I’m gonna focus on the borealis ring part.

Because it’s quite a phenomenon. But, actually, phenomenon might not be quite the appropriate word. Because its definition is sketchy: a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose cause or explanation is in question.

And I’m no scientist and I don’t play one on the internet. But I don’t believe the cause of the borealis ring, or any variation of the aurora borealis, is in question.

In fact, I already shared the broad view of how it happens. “Solar winds bombard nitrogen and oxygen molecules with lots of energy.” And not just nitrogen and oxygen.

And I believe the chemical composition of those elements, along with the enormous energy found in solar winds, are there because of the creative mind of God. I believe He delights in seeing us delight in such delightful things and borealis rings.

It appears to be that an Italian astronomer, Galileo Galilei, came up the name, Aurora Borealis, back in 1619. Aurora was the Roman goddess of dawn. And Boreas was the Greek god of the north wind.

But it was a Norwegian scientist who got back to reality.

Kristian Birkeland came up with theory that “electrons emitted from sunspots produced the atmospheric lights after being guided toward the poles by Earth’s magnetic field.” And his theory was proved to be correct. But not until after he died.

Now, regardless of the stupid mantra going around these days, “trust the science,” there is SOME science you CAN and SHOULD trust. Because it’s time-tested and proved to be true.

But even more important than that is how even the borealis ring is proof that a brilliant Designer came up with all this beautiful design. Of course, you shouldn’t take my word for it. Test what I say with what your eyes and ears can clearly see and hear.

And if you can prove God does not exist, or that evolution causes borealis rings, let me know. Otherwise:

Up in the land of the en-chan-ting,
God’s brilliant love, for us all, can bring
Bold light where the angels dance and sing,
The Dance of the Borealis Ring.

Stay tuned,

Stand for truth and don't be uncouth

I hear people talking, a little bit more than they did before, about how important it is to stand for truth, justice, and the American way. And I certainly don’t disagree. But I wonder how many are willing to do that if/when they’ll have to lose a lot.

Because, when you stand for truth, there WILL be losses.

Friends. Family members. Wealth and/or the potential for wealth. Goods and services. And even your “good name.” Yeah, those who hate Truth don’t care about your reputation. Or your worldview. Or how much you wanna help keep them out of hell.

They just want you to shut up. Toe the line. Quo the status.

But the majority of “they” don’t care where their soul will reside. And they don’t care that wherever that is it will be forever. They only want you to shut up, sit down, and stay silent.

I’m not gonna do that. And I’ve been trying to get people to understand the consequences of shutting up, sitting down, and staying silent for over 50 years. FYI: all those years and no profanity or vulgarity.

I debated the stupidity of evolution when I was in high school.

And I wrote articles against idiotic laws and loss of freedoms when I was in college.

And I’ve written thousands of articles and placed them on the internet for a couple of decades.

Plus, I’ve been able to stand for truth, and the horror of abortion, with my friends and Christian brothers and sisters on numerous occasions. I’ve even written songs about standing for Truth. Matter of fact, I’ll stop tooting my own horn, now, and share the lyrics to one of them.

Take A Stand

If you take a stand and you stand for the Way,
You might never be rich.
But no gold here beats the treasure in Heaven,
And you’ll know which is which.

Angels are gonna rejoice,
And we’re gonna get to see how
The Lord will judge the ones who wait.
So better take a stand right now.

If you take a stand and you stand for the Truth,
You could lose a good friend.
But if you lose the whole wide world
And keep your soul, you win in the end.

All eyes are gonna look up.
All knees are gonna bow,
And when that time comes it’s too late.
You gotta take a stand right now.

If you take a stand and you stand for Life,
People might laugh and make fun.
And Jesus didn’t say it was gonna be easy,
But you’ll be with Him when this life is done.

No more livin’ like this;
By the sweat of your brow,
And if you want God’s paradise,
You better take a stand right now.

Sacred geometry and smoke and mirrored imagery

America has gone from one end of the spectrum to the other when it comes to what is revered. I was born into a country that, while it was already very messed up, still placed a high value on Christian principles. But now there’s sacred places, sacred idols, and sacred geometry. But no respect for THE sacred God.

Uh-oh. Them there’s fightin’ words. How dare I emphasize THE and use the word, God, with a capital G?! Because everyone should know, by now, that “your God” is no better than someone else’s.

Hmm, I wonder if we can use sacred geometry to test that?

Here’s a quote from something I read on a “new age” website: “Sacred geometry is made of different symbols considered to be the basis of all matter in the Universe across various religions and cultures.”

Notice how Universe has a capital U? Sure, that’s OK. Because it seems to include all there is. So no one needs to feel left out. And while I don’t want anyone to be “left out,” I also don’t want to deny anyone the freedom to BE left out if it’s what they prefer. Yeah, even exclusion should be included.

Sounds weird, right?

But what’s actually weird is to believe sacred geometry is sacred. Or that symbols and numbers can somehow hold power.

I’m sure you know I’m not making this up.

Here’s another clip from that same article I read that talks about the power in the triangle:

“The first shape that can be formed from more than one line, the triangle is a representation of 3, the number of sacred creation. And in ancient Nordic cultures and countless across the world the number three is said to hold powerful mystical properties, symbolizing harmony and balance. They can represent the mother, father, and child; mind, body, and spirit. And pointing upwards is indicative of rising consciousness (a downward pointing triangle relates to the Divine Feminine). The pyramids are famous physical 3D examples of this structure, composed of four triangles and a square base, a tetrahedron.”

Basically all such nonsense is based on anything and everything to contradict the God of the Bible. Notice how the triangle pointing up is focused on your consciousness. And the “downward pointing triangle relates to the Divine Feminine.” One is you-focused. The other is opposite of the masculine God.

I also read this about sacred geometry and its forms: “These are the only five regular polyhedra, that is, the only five solids made from the same equilateral, equiangular polygons. To the Greeks, these solids symbolized fire, earth, air, spirit (or ether) and water, respectively.”

FYI: ether and spirit are not synonymous.

I’m sure they’re not talking about the ether where sodium is dissolved in ethereal solutions of aromatic ketones. But even their ethereal intentions can’t equate ether to spirit. Because spirit extends to us from THE Spirit. THE source of Life. The one who spoke the universe into existence. God, with a capital G. And without Him there wouldn’t be sacred geometry, ecclesiastical trigonometry, or mystical ‘Rithmetic.

Here’s the thing.

Placing the word, sacred, in front of something doesn’t make it sacred. In fact, it almost always leans the opposite direction. And it always takes the focus away from what and who IS sacred.

But I’m sure that’s the intention. Whether “new age” people would ever admit that or not.

And here’s one of the multitude of things I love about THE God of creation. He didn’t create you and me to be robots who could do nothing but love Him. We’re free to actually hate Him. I don’t recommend that. But it’s the number one choice by most of the people on the planet. Even as the majority of them would likely claim they don’t hate anyone.

So, when you fall for the smoke-and-mirrors shadow of truth, and deny THE Truth, you’re bound to re-create a world where…

Nothin’s Sacred Anymore

Take the truth and lock it up, and throw away the key.
Winds of change are blowing foul; a dance with destiny.
Blur the face of love and sex and say it’s all OK.
Tell the child it’s just a choice and melt her soul away.

Nothin’s sacred anymore…
Can’t we learn from mistakes when they cut to the core?
Nothin’s sacred anymore…
And should we be surprised since we’ve opened that dark, wide door?
Nothin’s sacred anymore.

Cast your vote for social growth and then say yes to law.
Keep the peace, divide the wealth; the vision Adolph saw.
Hedge the bets and ride the fence; the middle road’s secure.
Then one day you’re head to head with all you must endure.

Nothin’s sacred anymore…
Can’t we learn from mistakes when they cut to the core?
Nothin’s sacred anymore…
And should we be surprised since we’ve opened that dark, wide door?
Nothin’s sacred anymore.

More, more space and time.
More would be sublime.
Someone else can pay…long as I get mine today.
Ain’t nothin’ sacred anymore.

Question the science of your self reliance

OK, this little roller coaster ride is gonna take some interesting twists and turns. Because I’m leading off with content from a meme. I’ve seen different versions of it making the rounds. And the gist of it is “They say don’t question the science. But that’s exactly the opposite of how science works.”

I agree. Don’t question the science.

At least not when it’s right.

But when it tells you that a mask from Home Depot is protection against tiny viruses, question the science. And when it postulates the origin of the species as from goo to the zoo to you, question the science.

I love science. And math. And an occasional lighthearted skip down the existential garden path. But don’t be tryin’ to blind me with no science, Mr. Dolby!

Speaking of Thomas Dolby, the inventor of smooth audio processing. No, wait. Wrong Dolby. Thomas Dolby had the big 80’s hit, “She Blinded Me With Science.” I’m a big fan of the juxtaposed rhythms and layered synth sounds. And I enjoy quirky lyrics, so there’s that, too.

But I didn’t realize, until today, that Thomas Dolby played the distinctive synthesizer part on the song, “Waiting For A Girl Like You” by Foreigner. How cool is that! I love that song. And the synth  pad really adds to the mournful melodic undertones.

When I say I LOVE that song, it’s not exaggeration.

I added it to my solo repertoire back in the day. And it was one of those songs that most live acts didn’t play in the original key because the vocal is very high. But, in case you never heard me in any live venues, I didn’t shy away from high vocals.

One fun memory I have that’s associated with that song is from a night in Blackhawk, Colorado. I was booked as a solo in a casino there. And a couple of friends, Chaz and Kirk (a very popular duo in the area at the time) came in, on a break from their gig, just as I was singing the chorus. And they yelled out, “We knew it was you! Nobody else up here goes up to those high notes.”

I miss those guys. Wonder what they’re up to these days.

Anyway…

“Waiting For A Girl Like You” was co-written by Foreigner members Mick Jones and Lou Gramm. And Lou was the lead singer. He had a great rock voice. High, strong, and full. A perfect fit for their long list of hit songs.

Yeah, their first 8 releases broke into the Billboard Top 20. And no other band had done that since the Beatles. So, no small thang.

But, wouldn’t you know it. Lou jumped into the drugs and alcohol pit. I know. Shocker that a rocker would do such a thing. But nevertheless.

Mr. Gramm also became a born-again Christian. Another shocker, but for real this time. And, get this, it didn’t happen after or during his drug rehabilitation.

It happened before.

I saw a blurb from an interview he had at Fox News. And Lou said this:

“That happened just literally before Hazelden ( an addiction treatment center). We had played a sold out concert at Madison Square Garden and there was the record company party afterwards that lasted until four or five in the morning. Everybody was in that condition. And I ended up back in my hotel room. Of course I wasn’t able to sleep. I just started doing a little self assessment. And thinking about what I had become and was very upset about it. And worried about my children seeing me like this. I finally fell to my knees and asked God to take this plague away from me. I’m a devout born-again Christian. God plays a role in everything I do. I know he gave me life and saved my life. I serve him.”

According to info I’ve seen, that was in 1992.

So, as you might imagine, Lou Gramm‘s life has been full of milk and honey ever since.

Screech! Imagine again. Because five years later, in 1997, he was diagnosed with what they called “an inoperable brain tumor.” Have you ever heard of craniopharyngioma? Me neither. Thankfully the tumor was benign. But it damaged his pituitary gland. That, along with the treatment and recovery program caused him to gain weight and lose his voice.

Yikes, that’s something else I can relate to.

And it’s a singer’s worst nightmare.

But he worked his way back into the spotlight. And I’ve seen that he was on tour with the Lou Gramm Allstars this year. I don’t have any info on that right now. But the point is, he didn’t give up. And I wouldn’t be surprised if that had a lot to do with his connection to God.

Lou had new songs in the works. And apparently he has five kids. So, plenty to live for.

It does my heart good to hear that a singer I’ve enjoyed, through the years, has learned the power of submission to the one, true, living, loving, Creator of musicians and music. And I never question the art and science behind God’s logic and reason.

Stay tuned,

Rick Wakeman is awake, man

The Rick Wakeman story is a total yawner. Yeah, he’s your typical rockstar. Six kids. Happy marriage. Healthy lifestyle. So, nothing to see here, folks. Keep it moving.

Have you even ever heard of Rick Wakeman?

Wouldn’t surprise me if you haven’t. I mean, stories don’t come much more boring than his. Well, boring if you leave out the other three marriages and divorces he had before his current marriage. And if you leave out his 100+ albums (that’s not a typo). And, oh yeah, if you leave out his heart attacks and alcohol problems.

Uh-huh. Leave that non-essential stuff, and you’re left with two words. Bo. Ring.

Even his Christian journey lacks pizazz. Don’t get mad at me for talking about it that way. Rick described it this way:

“I’d like to be able to tell you that it was some blinding flash of light, etc. But it was not like that. I was brought up in a Christian family. When I was five, I was sent to South Harrow Baptist Church because my father’s church was too far away. I hasten to add I never had anything forced on me. I loved it and spent many enjoyable years there. It became a second home to me and I became sort of a church member and was baptised in September 1968.

Prior to that I did a two-year course on Sunday School teaching. I was also heavily involved with the Boys Brigade. In a nutshell I suppose that was the whole basis of the building of my faith. I can never remember a time in my entire life when I had any doubt that God existed.”

Cool. I’m not the keyboardist Rick is. But I can relate, somewhat, to his Christian path. Because I was also raised in a Christian family and didn’t have it forced on me. And that’s a big plus since a relationship with your Creator should never be forced. Love should be freely given. God doesn’t need a legion of Yes-men.

How’s that for a segue into part of Rick’s fame.

He was the famous keyboardist for the very successful “progressive rock” band, Yes. I can’t even write that without hearing “Roundabout” in my head. Or “Owner of a Lonely Heart.”

But I digress, a bit.

Rick also described the progression of his life like this:

“I’ve had some bad times in my life and, there’re days I’ve wandered off paths as most people have. But I never ever had a moment in time that I didn’t believe in God, very strongly.”

Keep that in mind as you check out this next section.

Mr. Wakeman endured three heart attacks, pneumonia, and sleeping on park benches. And, by his own admission, he could “out-drink anybody.” And he’s aware that his excessive drinking could have led to the three heart attacks.

But there you go. I guess I was a little hasty when I said his story is Bo Ring. Turns out Rick has had a long and illustrious life in the rockstar realm.

One interviewer asked him how he could reconcile his belief in God with the rock-n-roll. And his answer is familiar.

“Even though I was making mistakes and doing lots of wrong things, I never ever had a moment when I didn’t believe in God or the power of God or had the fear of God. I was aware of it when I was doing some things wrongly. I use a comparison sometimes of the number of times God said to Israel, ‘Right, I’ve had enough of you. But I’ll give you one more chance.’ Because He is ever-forgiving, providing that you own up.”

And Rick Wakeman seems to understand the value of pressing on.

He added this in an interview:

“So there comes a moment in your life whether you’ve had faith before or never had it, when you have to own up and look up towards the heavens and say, ‘Alright God, point taken, come back on board.’ Two interesting things happen from there. First of all, there aren’t any blinding flashes of light, your problems aren’t solved ten seconds later.

What you have got is, if you do it properly and mean it, you’ve got a clean bill of health. You’ve got a clean sheet to start with. What’s gone before is forgiven, providing you have asked for that forgiveness. And then if people throw it back at you, you go, ‘Okay, I can live with that,’ because I know that from the moment you regale your life or you gave it for the first time you’ve got a clean bill of health. Basically that’s what happened to me in the mid-80s.”

Now, Rick has focused a lot of his extensive talent to the “Christian music scene.” He shared some opinions about it:

“Now I’m not saying that all Christian music that’s available on record is of bad quality. But there is certainly not the choice available and the quality available that people would like. And I’m talking of people again of all ages.”

Yeah, I wholeheartedly agree with that.

Too much fluff-n-stuff in churches these days. Rick also said this about the Christian music:

“There’s too much being written by people who are just sitting in rooms churning it out. In a secular setting this stuff wouldn’t see the light of day. I’m not saying that all of that should be totally reversed but I think that it needs a good kick in the pants and we’re hoping that Hope Records will do that.”

And Rick’s a realist about it, too. He knows if you’re gonna work on more substantial Christian music instead of adding to the fluff, it’s gonna be way more difficult to prosper. He put it like this:

“But I’m still obviously going to have to spend some time doing the secular shows, the rock shows because otherwise I wouldn’t have a house to live in.”

I’m glad that, at 74, Rick Wakeman still wants to use the gift God gave him. And I’m especially glad that he dedicates much of his focus on the Word. Because without it, none of us would have music or anything else filled with hope.

Stay tuned,

Welcome to my nightmare. Now hold on right there.

Sounds like the start of very interesting story. Welcome to my nightmare. If you’ve live enough decades, you might remember guys like Doctor Demento or Svengoolie. And they were entertaining. But not nearly as interesting as a boy named Sue.

Yeah, if anyone understood the meaning behind Welcome To My Nightmare, it was Sue.

First, check out the lyrics to the first verses of the song:

Welcome to my nightmare.
I think you’re gonna like it.
I think you’re gonna feel you belong.
A nocturnal vacation,
Unnecessary sedation,
You want to feel at home ’cause you belong.

Ooh, cue the screechy strings. “You belong” in the nightmare? Yikes!

Maybe it’s just me. But it sounds like a lyrical description of hell. And my reckoning has always been that hell will be a place of eternal emotional breakdown. And frustration and despair. So, keep that in mind as you check out the next section of lyrics:

Welcome to my breakdown.
I hope I didn’t scare you.
That’s just the way we are when we come down.
We sweat and laugh and scream here.
‘Cause life is just a dream here.
You know inside you feel right at home here.

Creepy.

And I can imagine how a boy named Sue would turn that song up to 11 and yell, “They’re singin’ my song!” Imagine the torment, even if it’s only for a short life on Earth, of being a guy with a name like Sue. I shudder to think. And perish the thought. And thank goodness no one else had to deal with such issues.

Oh, wait a minute. One guy named Vincent Furnier actually took on a girl’s name on purpose. You probably know him better by that girl’s name, Alice.

And, as it turns out, I only brought up that boy named Sue so I could talk about a man named Alice. A man who certainly experienced the dark, earthly shadow of hell. Because he went through some serious alcohol and cocaine addiction and the problems that plague so many young celebrities.

Alice is the one who sang,

“Welcome to my breakdown, whoa-whoa-oh
You’re welcome to my nightmare, yeah-yeah-ah”

But he did something the vast majority of celebrities will NOT do.

Alice Cooper decided to start over. You might call it a sort of “born-again” decision. In fact, you should call it that. I read an article that said, “Cooper is somewhat reluctant to take on the mantle of celebrity “born-again Christian.” But I’ve also seen videos where he doesn’t back away from his Christian identity either.

And that’s impressive considering the potential for negative feedback.

Yeah, the so-called “tolerance and diversity” crowd draws the line of their tolerance and celebration of diversity at anyone who stands up for Christianity.

And the article I read showed that Alice Cooper does that. He said, “Being a Christian is something you just progress in. You learn. You go to your Bible studies. And you pray. It’s real easy to focus on Alice Cooper and not on Christ. I’m a rock singer. I consider myself low on the totem pole of knowledgeable Christians. So, don’t look for answers from me.  I’m a new creature now. Don’t judge Alice by what he used to be. Praise God for what I am now.”

So, what Alice used to be compelled him to write “welcome to my nightmare.” And what he is now compels him to “praise God” for it.

Goes to show that it’s possible to exchange the nightmare of hell for the sweet dream of Heaven.

OK, school’s out for the summer! Or at least until tomorrow.

Stay tuned,
