If you could take it out and look at it, your spinal cord would look something like an electrical cord with a bunch of little tentacles. In fact, they’ve probably used a spinal cord as inspiration for a science fiction character or two. I don’t know of one, personally. But it wouldn’t surprise me. Your spinal cord is your backbone controller. But that’s oversimplifying it.

Sure, it’s a backbone controller, but it controls a lot more, too.

But the ironic thing about an incredibly designed backbone controller is that many people, especially politicians, don’t have theirs connected.

And no backbone equals, as they say, all hat and no cowboy.

The ultimate cure for that problem is the ultimate backbone controller. The One who designed your spinal cord and every other intricately, detailed part of your body. God can make sure you have plenty of backbone and fortitude, even when your physical controller doesn’t function properly anymore.

I know this from personal experience.

My spinal cord was attacked by a tumor back in the 1990s. And in 1998 I went in for a complicated surgery to have that tumor removed. Because it was causing me to lose feeling in my right hand. And there were plenty of headaches and back problems, too. Thankfully, the surgery went well. And the tumor was removed. And after a long time of healing, including dealing with a piece of vertebrae removed in order for the doctor to get to the tumor, I got back to a normal lifestyle.

Fast forward to 2025, and my brain was attacked by a blood clot. And I had a stroke. After a few weeks of learning to walk again, bathe and dress myself again, and adjust to the left side of my body not functioning properly, I returned home to get back to as normal a lifestyle as possible.

Those two neurological issues have something in common.

I knew that God was with me at all times. And I never questioned His role in my tribulations. Because I know He didn’t do any of that to me. Ultimately all bad things happen because human beings sin. And we should never compound the sin by blaming God for any of the bad stuff.

Instead, it’s important to always thank Him for His many blessings even on your worst day.

Especially when you consider that your worst day is like a walk in the park compared to what Jesus went through to make sure you could have eternal life if you want it.

And that’s why Jesus is the backbone of our family. Jesus is the Grace in our house. And Jesus is the heart of God’s love for the world.

The Bible says He is the chief cornerstone. Here’s a rhyme about that even kids can remember:

Jesus is the one true cornerstone,
The center of my love and my backbone.
He holds me up in grace. His light shines on my face.
He’s in my heart. I’ll never be alone.
