After I graduated high school in Texas my brother and I moved to my mom’s house. She and my stepdad lived in a country house just outside a very small town in eastern Kansas. Population 1500, at that time. I got a job at a local lumberyard. And one of the guys who worked there dated the sister of a girl I was dating. And when he and that sister decided to tie the knot, they asked me to sing at their wedding. As I said, it was a small town. So, word got out that I didn’t stink as a singer. Before I knew it, there were many more weddings.
And I saw, up close and personal, a lot of people I knew tie the knot.
In fact, I lost count of how many knots I’ve seen tied. But I do know it’s way more than 3 and less than 1000. And I’ve even been asked to write songs for quite a few of them, believe it or not.
So, I think a singer songwriter should have at least one wedding song (or at least wedding appropriate) in his repertoire. Why? Because weddings are really special. And the songs that go with them are never forgotten. At least not by the happily married couple.
A couple of years ago, a videographer friend asked me if I could come up with a song that would go with his wedding video demo. I said I’d give it a shot. He liked it, used it in his demo, and even had a least one client who used it for their wedding. Here are the lyrics:
Here We Are
I believe in love that lasts forever,
And I can see this love inside your eyes.
I will give my trust to you for always
‘Cause I believe that true love never dies.
Here we are to say I do and hold each other’s hand.
Here we are to follow through on everything we’ve planned.
And here we are before the world becoming man and wife.
Here we are right here and now together for this life.
As we kiss and start this walk before us
Know that I will be here by your side.
You’re the one I’ll be with this whole journey.
You’re the home where my heart will abide. © 2008 TF
I think just about everyone who tied the knot with me as the singer for their wedding is still married. If you know of someone who isn’t, let me know. But I’m pretty sure my record is 100 percent. So, that, and a 5 dollar bill will get you a specialty coffee. You’re welcome!
