Woods of Wonder over yonder where I wander

The woods of wonder, where I wander in my imagination, don’t look the same as the beautiful forests I’ve wandered through across the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Of course, those forests, in the majestic Colorado mountains, are beautiful. But they don’t even remotely compare with the ones in my mind.

Reminds me how Paul compared life here on Earth to Heaven.

He wrote a letter to the new Roman Christians and said, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Of course, the sufferings of this present time don’t even remotely compare to the glory that’ll be revealed in us. Because that glory is the one true living, loving God of creation. So how could anything be compared to Him? Hint: it can’t.

Yeah, the creator of the universe and all life on our little blue planet lives IN those who believe and trust in him. And that’s the reason why you even have an imagination. And I believe it’s why your imagination can dream up visions that go far beyond the pale shades of this broken world.

That being said, you couldn’t imagine beyond yourself without the pale shades and creations of this broken world. And that’s why I thank God for creating me in the world I can enjoy as I walk through the…

Woods of Wonder

Walking in the woods of wonder…
Leaping off a limb of lights…
Slipping down a secret scots pine…
Kiwi trees are flying kites.
All around are dancing aspens…
With their white and wondrous wings…
Bristling branches and sweet breezes…
Where a speckled sparrow sings.
Rainbow redwoods rake the blue sky…
Mystic music mingles in…
Dragons drift by in their dreamboats…
Lemon larkspurs live within.
Walking in the woods of wonder…
Thinking thoughts of thrilling things…
Life’s a lilac filled with lightning..
We’re all wearing water wings. © 2003

A social media friend of mine shared a link to a video of John Wayne throwing a kid into deep creek. Actually it was John Wayne playing the title character from the movie, Hondo. And the movie was based on the book, by the same name, written by Louis L’Amour. His books were partly the products of imagination and largely a part of Mister L’amour’s exceptional ability to visualize terrain. I didn’t know that before today.

No, his storytelling skill wasn’t just a product of imagination.

But his books are fictional accounts of the old west. In fact, if you bring up the subject of old west fiction, anyone who’s lived more than two or three decades will almost immediately think of Louis L’Amour.

My friend’s reference nudged me to do a little research on Louis’ visualization skills. I discovered this:

~ His knack for describing landscapes wasn’t just a product of imagination. It was deeply rooted in his real-life experiences and meticulous research. L’Amour traveled extensively across the American West, working jobs like cowboy, miner, and lumberjack, which gave him firsthand knowledge of the rugged landscapes he later depicted. He walked the trails, climbed the mountains, and crossed the deserts he wrote about. And he absorbed the details that brought his settings to life. ~

And I saw a snippet that mentioned Hondo specifically. It said:

~ For instance, in novels like Hondo, the terrain isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a character. And it helps shape the plot and the people in it as much character descriptions and dialogue. ~

Apparently Louis L’Amour could paint a mental picture of a canyon’s twists or a river’s flow so clearly that readers felt they could navigate it themselves. And that was a result of his habit of studying maps, hanging out in locations, talking to old-timers, and even sketching landscapes to lock them into memory.

L’Amour said he could “see” a place in his mind before writing about it.

He said he’d “mentally walk through it.” And that’s how he could visualize the sun’s angle, the scrub brush’s texture, or how a horse’s hooves would kick up dust on a dry ridge.

But there’s nothing mystical about his talent. He honed his skills by actually living in those kinds of places. And he had a genuine, lifelong curiosity about the land’s history and geology. Plus he photographed locations and studied the pictures to double-check his mental images of them. And he researched historical records to be sure his stories were accurate and authentic.

I guess his imagination and ability to visualize stories was pretty good. Because he wrote over a 120 books. Not to mention (but I will) all his short stories and other writings. And plenty of those were turned into big screen, and even made-for-TV, movies.

Sure, that’s all impressive. But I always “see” something else at work when I read or hear about “special skills.” And I know they aren’t just a “product of imagination” or “ability to visualize.” Those talents are gifts from God. And no matter how amazing they might seem, they’re just a shadow of what God wants for us.

Paul put it this way: “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.”

In the chorus of my song, Perfect Point of View, I visualized it this way:

I fly…till tangled thoughts untie,
Up where my dreams are all true blue.
So high…ideas electrify
And charge a perfect point of view.

And one day, sooner than you might imagine, the Lord of creation is gonna give everyone who loves Him that perfect point of view. I, to that, I say “Hi yo, Hondo! Let’s go!”

High above the skies with sleep dust in their eyes

In 2011 I started producing the songs for my second collection of original lullabies for kids. (psst…adults love ’em, too) Many people, who bought the first collection, Lullabye Bye, asked me to write some more with a country and western “feel.” And while I’m not a fan of what passes for country and western these days, I AM a fan of the true western “feel.” Think Roy Rogers, Sons of the Pioneers, and even Michael Martin Murphy. So, I decided to go west(ern) and high above imagination to a Dreamland for little buckaroos.

So, what could possibly be high above imagination?

As I started dreaming up lyrics for the title song, Bedtime Buckaroos, I thought about some essentials for western music. You can probably think of some. Like cactus, ponies, ropes, and rodeos. And I visualized listeners going where only imagination can go. And even way beyond that.

Naturally, since it would be a collection of lullaby songs, I knew the rest of the songs would be in that same western world of imagination. So, you’ll find titles like Mornin’ Skies and Lariat Loop and Cowpoke Lullaby.

Sure, they’re designed for kids. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself enjoying them, too. Because I didn’t use cutesy voices with over-simplified lyrics. If you prefer those kinds of songs, this collection isn’t for you.

Here are the lyrics to the title song.

If you have kids (or you’re one at heart), let it take them (and you) high above imagination to a place where cosmic cowpokes sing around a campfire constellation.

When your dreams begin,
You’ll be free again
To ride high above imagination.
Cactus silhouettes
Practice pirouettes
What a night of fancy fascination.

© 2011

With their very own Bedtime Buckaroos book, kids can listen to music and sing along as they color and draw. Because inside you’ll find a special link where you can download the songs that go with the lyrics in the book. Yep, that’s right. 10 songs to help kids fly high above imagination. And they’re included in the price of the book.

Here’s the actual link to the book: (https://www.amazon.com/Bedtime-Buckaroos-Sing-along-color/dp/B086XCX55H)

By the way. Happy New Year. Start 2024 in the right direction with the Bedtime Buckaroos book.

Something invisible inside that only you can hide

If you could carry around something invisible that could almost immediately transport you across the world, you’d do it. Right? Well, you’ve got something like that. And you have a way to access it almost anytime you like.

Your phone or tablet or laptop give you access to something invisible.

And magical. And you probably already use it, like that, in some way or another. But maybe not the way I’m thinking of right now. At least not as often as other ways. Like videos. Or games. Or pictures.

No, what I’m talking about is imagination. It’s better than all the video games. Because, with them, you can only do what someone else pre-programmed. But your imagination can take you to the edges of the universe. To the land of giants. And even down to the hidden wonders of the microscopic world.

For example, have you ever seen the stunning variety of of color, shapes, and movements in a human eye when viewed in photo magnification? Wow! So much intricate design contained in so little space.

Then there’s the other end of the spectrum. Did you know there are 40,000 muscles in an elephant’s trunk? Yeah, it’s true. And an elephant can use its trunk to lift up to 770 pounds and crush large fruit. Plus, it can pick individual leaves off trees. Human engineers can only attempt copycat designs. No matter how many times they try.

It sparks my imagination to think how all the big and tiny creatures could have come into existence as a result of spoken words. Something else invisible and powerful. Sadly, most people believe it sounds too far-fetched. And on the flip side , it sounds too far-fetched to me to imagine it could have all merely big banged into existence.

I’m glad I can see the design in everything around me. And I’m glad the Designer saw fit to give me imagination. And that’s how I can write, day after day, and never use up all the words or numbers. Like the big time I had writing…

Tiny Time

Look under the leaves of the sunflower plant…
Way back in the dirt you’ll see Arnold the Ant.
He works at his desk where he thinks up a rhyme,
And writes it all down in his own tiny time.

Now look over there in the bark of the tree.
A beetle’s as busy as beetles can be.
He chews for a while, and then starts to climb,
And keeps moving up in his own tiny time.

Have you seen the tadpoles that live in the pond?
They turn into frogs without using a wand.
They take a deep breath and swim under the slime
And only come up in their own tiny time.

There’s something invisible inside your head
When you are awake or asleep in your bed…
So small it can live in the sound of a chime…
Your imagination in sweet, tiny time.

In your own mind you'll just fall behind

In your own mind, do you think you can truly understand the universe? And I mean all its vastness, emptiness, and mysteries? I don’t believe you can.

Because, in your own mind, there’s a tendency toward imagination.

Imagination is great. I love to use it to create word pictures. But, when you spend too much time in your own mind, it can lead to brain melt-down. Or total brain freeze. And either way can lead you away from Truth. And whether the world likes to admit it or not, there’s so much Truth in the universe. Dependable. Factual. Truth.

But here’s a key point. The truth IN the universe does NOT come FROM the universe. Because it’s a vast, mostly empty, mostly mysterious creation. The universe never created anything, much less itself.

So, the truth IN the universe is discovered in how it’s designed. With precision. And amazing functionality. And the design is so dependable that humans have been able to steer ships (on land, the sea, and in the air) by the position of stars.

In your mind you might come up with some magical ideas and stories for how that happens. But, in the real world, it can be summed up in the word “design.” Uh-oh, there’s that word again.

So, how in the world (and why) does all this apply to pondering the mysteries of the universe? Well, if the universe is the source of life and truth, it really doesn’t matter what you make of it. Because it’s an IT. And that means it doesn’t matter if you’re right or wrong. Your opinion will be just as good or valid as anyone else’s.

After all, you’re just as valid as anyone else. Right?

And if you say the source of truth is the vast oneness of the universe or the inner force inside the good hearts of people who “love everybody,” then you’re right. And if someone else says the source of truth is the cumulative efforts of “wise men” meeting together in a room of ornate wood carvings and stoic books, then they’re right. And even if everybody totally disagrees, everybody’s right. Right?

(buzzer sound)

Wrong! (gasp among the crowd and whispered voices ask “did he say wrong?”)

Yes, wrong. Because we can all be wrong. Or some can be right and some wrong. But we can’t all be right. And I say you and I can make sense of the universe because it’s designed by God. And He’s greater than all the ingredients in the universe.

Of course, I’m right. Right?

But what if I’m right? What if it’s true
All of these things I’ve been sayin’ to you?
What if you die and it’s not the end?
What if your life is nothing you can defend?
You think I’m wrong…that I don’t walk in the light,
But what if I’m right?

Marvel is better or at least the pacesetter

Unless you’ve been glued to your Minecraft or Candy Crush, you probably already know how big the superhero movies have been the last 10 years. They’re mostly based on characters from Marvel and DC comic book series. And I have it on good authority, Marvel is better. And from what I’ve been able to discover, if you go by box office bucks, the last 10 years have put Marvel way on top.

But so what if Marvel is better at the box office.

Who cares about making millions of dollars? Especially when it just means a bunch of rich, white guys will have even more money to wield their power and control. Yeah, I said it. A bunch of rich, white guys.

Well, one anyway.

Because, as it turns out Walt Disney owns Marvel. And I just betcha he’s sittin’ in his ivory tower, right now, scheming up ways to use his dough to make more dough by taking all your dough.

*ring ring ring* Uh, excuse me. I gotta take this call. Be right back…

(in a slightly whispered voice…)

Do what? *pause*

Mr. Disney is what? *pause*

Huh? It’s the Walt Disney Company? *pause*

And are you sure about that? *pause*

When did he die? And do they understand what his means at DisneyWord? *pause*

OK, yeah. I’ll clear it up with my people. *pause* Yeah, you have a nice day, too. *click*

Alright. Sorry for that interruption. Well, as it turns out, Walt Disney doesn’t actually own Marvel. Because he’s been dead since 1966. So, I’m not sure how all these so-called “Disney” movies get away with calling themselves that. But no one consulted ME on it. So, I’ll just defer to my secret authority who says Marvel is better. And leave it at that.

Comic book heroes in movies, on TV
Fly off the pages of Marvel and DC,
Capture attention and imagination,
Yet, don’t compare to the Lord of creation.

eBooks For Kids by Tony Funderburk, the world's leading writer-singer-illustrator for kids and life

Six illustrated ebooks for kids by a writer I know personally…

OK…I know it’s shameless self-promotion, but since I’m the writer, singer, illustrator, publisher, publicist, promotion team, and blogger for the TonyFunderburk.com empire I can’t delegate it to anyone else. Please forgive me and read on…

What’s the greatest source for a vivid imagination?

Kids of course.

Have you ever talked to a kid, asked him a question that doesn’t make sense, and watched the imagination machine start to churn? It’s a fun thing to do, and I do it all the time. For instance”I might ask a 5 year old boy or girl why the sky is so green today. They’re old enough to know the sky is blue, but a grownup just asked why it’s so green. So their imagination starts to spin and they try to make sense of it even though they also like to make nonsense out of it, too.

The looks kids can get in their eyes are priceless. I never get tired of seeing the consternation”and the wonder.

That’s a big reason why I started writing and illustrating ebooks for kids. Their minds haven’t had the dreams beat out of “˜em yet. They don’t think in terms of having their hands tied by a job or a family or a mortgage or whatever. They still think an elephant can fly or hatch a “who”. It’s a blast to write with my thought waves in their world.

If you have kids, I encourage you to spend time in their world. Remember”once upon a time”

…it was your world.
