The number 9 is mighty fine and kinda like a sign

The number 9 took on a whole new value for me this morning. Hopefully you’ll find this so fascinating you’ll say, “Wow, Tony. It’s amazing how well you entertain us with your knowledge of insignificant and trivial things.”

Well, hopefully the number 9 will keep you in that state of awe.

Did you know, for example, that the number 9 always retains its identity? This is uncanny. It’s almost unbelievable. In fact, it puts the un in Funderburk. That’s how undeniably amazing it is. What’s that you say? What do I even mean? And why don’t I show you what I mean? OK, how’s about this?

You can multiply the number 9 by any number. And eventually it reduces back to its numerical value. Try 9×2. That equals 18. Then you add 1 + 8 and you get 9. 9×3 equals 27. And (you already see it) 2 + 7 equals 9. So, in numerology, this quality symbolizes power, strength, and stability.

Not impressed yet?

How ’bout this?

I’m an open Theist. A friend of mine, who was also an open Theist pastor, used to say “God can create a new butterfly if He wants. And He could write a new song if He so desired.” And I couldn’t agree more. But I’ll go one more step. I believe God, the Son, IS the ultimate New Song.

He was crucified and died at hour 9 of that day, or 3 p.m., to make the way of salvation open to everyone. And that was a new Way never before available to everyone.

Plus, that new Way provided what we know as the “fruit of the Spirit.” And there are nine of them: faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, joy, kindness, long suffering, love, peace, and self-control. When Paul wrote about them, it was something new. Attributes the long, long years of the law hadn’t produced:

You might say, a new song in your heart. Well, you might not say that. But I certainly will.

Here’s another factoid I luv. Jesus made live appearances 9 different times after He resurrected from the dead. Once to Mary Magdalene. Once to two men traveling to Emmaus. Then once to a group of 500 believers and his half-brother James. And then, He showed himself five other times to different apostles.

OK, here’s something that’s really gonna gitcha. At least if you have a soul.

I just discovered that “The phrase, new song, occurs nine times in Scripture. Six times in the Psalms. Once in Isaiah. And twice in Revelation. In every instance, the reference is to a song of praise addressed to God, usually because of his salvation of people.”

So, here’s how I see it. When you sing a “new song” to THE New Song, you take music to a whole ‘nother level. And that’s like pouring Living Water on all those fruits of the Spirit. And that, my friend, is powerful (like the number 9) with a capital POW.

That kind of info inspired me to write lyrics like this:

I’m gonna leave my cares and troubles far behind
I’m gonna live this brand new life that I’ve designed?
And I’m gonna love discovering which way to go.
I’m gonna laugh and then say yes instead of no.

Swamp rock, old stock, and tick-tock

I like the way you walk. Well, say that you’ll be true. Well, say that you’ll be mine. If you’ve been around long enough to recognize those three sentences, you’re (shall we say) not exactly a young person. Or you could be a young person who’s into vintage swamp rock.

Yeah, you read that right. Swamp rock.

And swamp rock didn’t originate in the U.S. congress. Even though the name might make you think it did. It didn’t. Now, I know you’re all distracted and you wanna go make a meme about swamp rock and congress. But stick with me for just a little bit. Your meme can wait.

Anyway…

Speaking of Susie Q (wait, were we speaking of Susie Q or was I just thinking out loud?), you probably didn’t know that Creedence Clearwater Revival didn’t write that song. If you thought they did, it’s a common mistake since they have the most famous version of it.

But actually it was written, at least in part, by Dale Hawkins. He recorded his version of it way back in the “rockabilly era” of 1957. And most people who know anything about him would probably tell you that’s just about his best known recording. Yeah, he was no Elvis or  Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly.

Even though you might’ve never heard of him, Dale became a record producer. And I saw an article that said he worked with artists such as Michael Nesmith, Bruce Channel and Harry Nilsson. Michael Nesmith was a member of the Monkees. Bruce Channel had a hit with one of my oldies favorites, “Hey Baby.” And of course, I’m a big fan of Harry Nilsson. And that’s despite the fact that Greg Perry, the Ultra-advanced eBay Guy, likes him, too.

So, what am I rambling on and on about here?

Well, as it turns out Dale Hawkins died from colon cancer on this day, February 13, back in 2010. He was 73. Mr. Hawkins was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. I don’t know much more about him of any importance.

But when I read music history articles about musicians who left the planet, I always wonder if they’re singing a new song of joy now.

Or do they only hear never-ending tormented blues now?

Whichever it is, it’ll go on forever because of a choice they made while they were still here. I don’t know about you, but I say give me JOY. Sweet, never-ending new songs of JOY.

I will probably never be inducted into any hall of fame here in America. But I’m looking forward to the halls of Heaven where my name is in THE book of Life.

Who’s with me?

If you haven’t already, take a second and join the growing body of believers who’ve already signed up for my Tony’s Daily Devotional . When you do, I’ll send you links to 2 songs and 2 books that adults AND kids enjoy right away. Then, I’ll send you flashes of light from the faith, hope, and power of God’s love.

When angels sing, is that a thing?

There aren’t any specific verses in the Bible that mention when angels sing. But the idea, or the spirit of the concept of Heavenly choirs of angels, certainly seems completely feasible to me. And based on my own desire to sing out when I think of my many blessings, I can only imagine how angels must feel in God’s presence.

I’m sure I’m not alone in this. Because think about the lyrics to so many famous Christian-based songs. Including Christmas songs. Real Christmas songs. Not the “runned-over-by-a-reindeer” silliness.

For example, “Hark, the herald angels sing.” And how about these lyrics from the best Christmas song ever? “Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices! O night divine! O night when Christ was born.” That example doesn’t specifically say the angels are singing. But it provides words that imply that idea.

The bestselling book of all time includes lots of implications.

But without at least a sixth grader’s level (or an ongoing curiosity) of English grammar, some implications could be misconstrued as contradictions. Or disagreeable discrepancies. And that’s more than a shame.

Because the bestselling book of all time is an infinitely deep well of living water to sustain your soul and nourish your joy. I know it’s done that for me. Matter of fact, my hope and joy always weave through my daily life. So much so that my circumstances never steer, push, or even nudge me away from my faith.

And it’s NOT a blind faith. It’s based on a huge evidence spectrum. From the tiniest atoms inside the trillions of cells in your body to the seemingly endless arrangements of stars in the heavens. It’s easy to see the master craftsmanship and design in all of it. So, it’s easy to believe there must be a “craftsman.”

And it’s not a huge leap to imagine how angels must feel compelled to sing, from sheer joy, to be in the presence of their very own Maker. I believe that’s how I’ll be.

And I hope you’ll be there to celebrate with me…

When Angels Sing

When angels sing from Finland skies,
Aurora Borealis eyes
Perceive a glass kaleidoscope
Of crystal lights lit up by Hope.
The angels send a message through
The frozen night of opaque blue
And bid the world to come behold
This place of peace, this crown of gold.
So, if you hear a rustling wing,
Be set to go when angels sing.

Scientific research leaves me in the lurch

Here’s some scientific research to get your day off on the left foot. And I promise, I’m not trying to fill your head with earworms or brain fog. I just think you should know how things really are in this life. Because my illuminated opinions might not be enough for some people. (I’m sure that’s not you. Right?) Check out this information that came out on this day (10/3) in 2011:

“According to new scientific research,

Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’ was found to be the catchiest song ever written. Musicologist, Dr Alisun Pawley, from the University of London, England, conducted research into what makes a song memorable and compiled a list of the ten ‘catchiest’ songs of all time. During the research, they discovered that sing-along songs contained four key elements: long and detailed musical phrases, multiple pitch changes in a song’s ‘hook’, male vocalists, and higher male voices making a noticeable vocal effort. Y.M.C.A. by the Village People, Sum 41’s Fat Lip, and Europe’s The Final Countdown were also in the list.”

OK, there you have it.

Official research. By a bonafide musicologist. So, it’s got to be true. Because scientific research from a bonafide expert is essentially good as gospel.

‘Nuff said.

Wait a sec. Alright, Queen was a very popular top 40 band. And the Village People got more airplay than any sane person should care to hear. But “Fat Lip” by sumbody called “Sum 41?” Uh, yeah no. (side note: I just read that “yeah no” means No in California speak. So, that’s why I used it.)

And who gets to say what the four key elements are?

Oh wait. C’mon, Tony. Remember? A bonafide musicologist. Duh.

But “long and detailed musical phrases.” Seriously? In pop music? Generally speaking that would be another yeah no. But “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” certainly fits that bill. Here’s a cool version of it:

And, a personal favorite, is Für Elise, by Beethoven. Here’s a cool version of it:

OK, I know you’re probably thinking, “Tony, those are classical pieces. Nobody sings along to them.” A-ha! the scientific research didn’t say best singalongs of all time. It said “catchiest songs of all time.” And when I see the phrase, “of all time,” I remember time began long before the Top 40 charts.

Yeah, the songs I shared don’t include “higher male voices making a noticeable vocal effort.” But they’re some of the catchiest songs you’ll ever hear. Except you’ll never hear them on 99% of the radio stations. And that’s too bad.

Because the music I shared has some serious health benefits.

And there’s actual scientific research to back that up.

But I guess if you’d prefer to form your arms into the letters Y, M, C, and A, health benefits of some of the greatest music ever composed aren’t really on your radar.

I know you’ll probably have those Top 40 earworms in your head now that I’ve mentioned them. But I believe they’ll vanish once you check out the music links I shared.

Beethoven and Bach might not be on your current Top 40 chart. But they should be. Mozart, too. Because your heart needs the musical connection to your Creator that their music provides.

Ignore me at your own peril.

Stay tuned,

Something to sing about in this era of doubt

Life. Love. And freedom. Hope. Bread. And water. Joy. And a rock-solid promise. Yeah, I’ve definitely got something to sing about. And when I say “sing,” that’s how I cheer. Because, for me, singing is the best form of celebration.

So you might ask, “Well, what IS this something to sing about”

And I might answer, “Well, well, well…I’m not goin’ to hell.” (Yeah, I answer in rhymes. So what.)

And that’s definitely something to celebrate because I certainly don’t deserve to not go to hell. Are you keepin’ up with that line of thought? Good. Let’s continue.

There are people, all over the world, and right here in America, who are working hard to make sure people like me don’t enjoy this life so much. Yeah, it’s true. And if you believe and trust in Jesus as the only Way to eternal life, you’re right here with me. They don’t want you to enjoy this life so much either. Are you feelin’ it?

Of course, if you’re not a boat rocker (and obviously I am), then you might not have much to worry about from those people who hate you. But that’s not a good strategy in the long run. Because it means you’re swimming around in the lukewarm water. And God’s not a fan of the lukewarm.

And if you truly wanna enjoy life…and I’m talkin’ life that never ends…it’s a good idea to take a stand. Or I should say, take THE stand. But I gotta warn you. When you do, you won’t get what you deserve. Can you live with that?  (hint: yes)

(After you read these lyrics, or listen to them in the podcast, get your own “what I deserve” t-shirt – it’s the purple one on this page)

Give Me What I Deserve

You gave me life…
Gave me love, and gave me freedom.
You took my sins…
And You nailed “˜em, and You beat “˜em…

“˜Cause this person who you bought never had the nerve.
So I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

You gave me hope,
Gave me bread and living water.
You gave your blood…
When I led you to the slaughter.

But you never even fought or let your focus swerve.
And I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

Lord, don’t give me…what I deserve.
If I stand in the middle of the road,
Nudge me to Your side.
Lord, don’t give me…what I deserve…
“˜Cause I’m the reason and the cause
Why Jesus died…But then He rose again!

You gave me joy…
Gave Your word you’d leave me never.
You gave Your life so that I could live forever.

And on this earthly azure dot I can choose to serve.
So I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.
