New tricks the right mix for a good fix

PGrab some coffee (or your favorite brain waker upper) and get ready to learn some new tricks. And don’t give me that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks baloney.

I learn some kind of “new trick or tricks” every day.

And, as you might recall, there’s another old saying that you’ve probably even heard recently: “You learn something new every day.”

I’ve never truly bought into the idea that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks anyway. In the first place, most people, who use that phrase, apply it to people. People aren’t dogs. And in the second place, I’ve seen actual old dogs learn new tricks. And I’ll be darned if I’m gonna let an old dog outlearn me.

I’m happy to say I found others who agree with me on this. Here’s a few comments I found from “old dogs” who’ve heard others say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks:

  • “a favourite saying for those who don’t wish to learn any more”
  • “this dog’s going for an MBA. Here’s to learning, growth, and proving it’s never too late!”
  • “Something I never thought I could do EVER, but always wanted to, I did today (TWICE).”
  • “The quickest way to become an old dog is to quit learning new tricks.”
  • “You’re wired to adapt, learn, and grow at any age.”

It really does come down to a mindset.

For example, do you have a computer? You know, those boxes with a built-in typewriter, TV screen, and scrolling device? Well, they’ve become pretty handy in these here modern times. So, I recommend you get one.

I’m kidding around to make a point. Once virtually everybody got a computer, a lot of old dogs who either had to learn new tricks or get left in the digital dirt.

Many baby boomers were in their late thirties and early forties when this paradigm sprang up. It’s hard to believe now, but many thought it was just a trend. And they didn’t buy into it. But many of those who adopted the new technology and decided to use it for all it was worth reaped substantial rewards. The personal computer and the internet gave a lot of old dogs access to a lot of awesome new tricks.

So, keep this in mind. If circumstances and health allow, you eventually DO get old.

Boomers are the latest generation to discover just how true that is.

But keep this in mind. You’re not a dog. You’re a human being made in the image and likeness of God.  Now, move away from those reactionary old habits and embrace new action steps.

Dreams are hidden right behind your eyes,
Every day and night a new surprise.

Just in case you think you’re an old dog and even your phone outsmarts you, here’s an audio book that can help you change that mindset.

Summer Is Almost Over

When you see the leaves start to yellow, and you hear the school bell ring, it means Summer Is Almost Over.

Summer is almost over, and you know what that means…

When you see the leaves start to yellow, and you hear the school bell ring, it means Summer Is Almost Over.

School days are here…or almost here for all you kids. And that’s a great thing…not a terrible thing. It means you get to dive into books where your brain can swim in adventures. You’ll be learning new numbers, words, stories about famous people, and a lot more.

I remember those first days of Autumn, when I was a kid, and how I’d be so excited to get my pencils and paper and see what I’d be learning. I looked forward to reading time, math time, art time, and yes…even recess time. The main thing I looked forward to was all the new stuff I was gonna know how to do. Don’t get me wrong…I didn’t want summer to ever end. But I loved learning more and more each year.

What about you? Do you think of learning as a chore? Or do you look forward to the adventures and all you’ll discover? If you (and your teacher) make it an exciting journey, you’ll be a learner all your life. And you won’t be sad when…

Summer is almost over…
Summer is almost gone,
But don’t shed a tear
When school days are here…
Be happy ’cause life goes on.

Summer is almost over…
Autumn is next in line…
It’s crisp and it’s cool,
So dive in the pool.
While you still have warm sunshine.

Summer is almost over…
It’ll be back next year.
You just wait and see
Next summer will be
Back faster than you might fear.

Stay tuned,
