Kinetic art, a perpetual start

Poetry in motion. “She blinded me with science.” And I’m about to dazzle you with distraction. Yeah, I figure I can mix the magic, media, and metaphors and still be back at the kitchen table in time for breakfast. Kids, don’t try this at home. Now, let’s dive into the wonderful world of kinetic art.

First, what’s so great about kinetic art?

Well, here’s a description I found to help understand what it is: “Broadly, any piece of art that revolves around a fascination with movement can be considered Kinetic art. Kinetic artists offer us an artistic expression of the growing modern age with its technological intersections and philosophies. Kinetic artists explored art that could extend into both space and time and artworks that morphed with viewer interaction. Mechanized sculptures that change their appearance over a cycle of time seem to capture the fast-paced evolution of the modern age.”

Sounds simple enough. Right? (I’m seriously tongue-in-cheek right now)

Yeah, the so-called “art world aficionados” love to pontificate. But the gist of what that paragraph said is this. People love to watch things move. So, when artists incorporate motion into their works, people tend to love the added dimension. Seems reasonable to me.

I watched a guy give a Pop Tech Talk about his creations. And even though he was from California and spoke like a guy who had a close relationship with cannabis, his art was mesmerizing.

But that’s how design and motion are. Mesmerizing.

And when you capture motion with raw materials, it can be magical.

The Pop Tech Talk guy I watched used wood and string. And lights. And metal tubing. He said he never attended art school. But he did go to a couple of painting schools in Italy. He mentioned some of his memorable experiences there and at another art class in Russia. And when he got to the Russian part, he shared how the world is made up of two perspectives.

First, there’s the beauty side. Dawns and dusks. Sparkling lights. Rainbows and butterflies. But then, he said, there’s this “sort of structured” side. And he said he wasn’t sure if the structure is about waves and sines. But he was certain of the structure. Just not what to do with it other than “try to reach out and touch it. Or let it touch you.”

Of course, there’s another thing you can do with it.

Appreciate the complexity of design. And then appreciate how important it is for complex design to have a designer. And because that’s true for wood and string and lights and metal tubing, it’s even way more important for you and me. Because you and I are kinetic, eternal beings. We’ll exist forever.

I’ve been fascinated by kinetic and potential energy since I first learned about them in my high school science class. And I’ve understood, for most of my life, that those forces didn’t come from nowhere and nothing. So, naturally (and maybe even a little bit supernaturally) I decided to write and sing about ’em.

Kinetic Love

I got dreams like the sand on the shore.
And I got plans formulating inside.
I got hopes just waiting for an open door.
And I got a system true and tried.

I got a force deeper than a heartbeat.
And I got a strength more potent than a storm.
I got a love that’s music for my dancing feet.
And I got a place that’s always warm

I got kinetic love…I got potential love.
And there’s a kingdom come waiting down the line.
I got a lavish love…and I got a simple love.
And I gotta share this love ‘cause it ain’t just mine.

I got songs married to my mind.
And I got art no one else can see.
I got roads just waiting to be driven down.
I got a Truth that sets me free.

I got a gold you can’t measure on earth.
And I got jewels in the sparkling dew.
I got a wealth that doesn’t have a mortal worth.
And The Living God who gets me through.

Life is short. Now, what's your retort?

If you’re old enough to remember back to the 60’s, or maybe even 50’s, you know full well that life is short. Right? I mean, how could it already have been this many years since then? If your memory goes back that far, you probably remember life being a lot simpler. And nicer. And sensibler (I know that’s not a word, but I wanted to make it fit in. So there.)

But if you’ve grown up in more recent decades, you probably have a whole ‘nother perspective. And you might even think older people don’t recall things so well because they’re…well…old.

Yeah, I remember thinking similar thoughts about my Grandmother. Because she’d talk about how one day I’d be grown and people I had loved wouldn’t be around anymore. And she’d say something like, “Love them while you can. Because one day you’ll wish you could see them, but they’ll be gone for good.”

Yes, life is short.

Because her words came to pass a long time ago. And with each passing year or decade more of those people are gone.

OK, that’s nostalgic and all. But it only skims the surface on why each day is a precious gift. And that’s what makes the incredibly screwed up condition of our world so important.

I remember a phone conversation with my Mom (who has since become one of those people who’s gone for good) about how messed up America is. And she said, “I’m scared for my grandkids and great-grandkids. I hate to think about what they’re gonna face in this world as they turn into adults.”

I saw several videos, this morning as I sipped my coffee, that showed real life violence in what used to be ordinary daily experiences. And I mean violence where people hit each other in the face. Repeatedly. And even a video where one guy calmly pulled out a pistol from his sweatshirt and shot another guy in the head. Point blank. And then walked past the guy he shot and calmly shot him again. Then, robbed him.

So, Mom was right. Her grandkids and great-grandkids are growing up in a horrible time. Innocence is lost. Common sense is lost. And “Love Your Neighbor” is definitely lost.

So, all hope is lost. Right?

Yes. That IS right. If your definition of hope is based on a feeling. And if you’re just hoping the bad stuff will go away. But real hope is NOT lost. And I mean the kind of hope that propels you forward. Gives you strength. Energizes your love. Fuels your dreams. That hope is still here. Available 24/7/365.

But it WILL disappear when the whole world turns its back on God.

Thankfully, that hasn’t happened yet. But it sure seems imminent now.

And the clock is ticking. Time is running out. You can laugh and say, “Not me. I’m still young.” But in a few short moments (and it will seem like that), you’ll face your own mortality. And don’t be surprised when you hear yourself say, “Life is short.” Especially if you’re a person who ponders truth and its implications.

It’s crucial to your long-term health to choose hope. And choose life. The Life your Creator provides.

If you’ve already done that, share that with those you love before they’re gone for good. Because that time is coming at us all, like a rocket ship in zero gravity.

I got dreams like the sand on the shore.
And I got plans formulating inside.
I got hopes just waiting for an open door.
And I got a system true and tried.  (from my song “Kinetic Love”)

Tuesday morning sky and a warmongering guy

Morning, afternoon, and evening salutations. And hope you have/had a wonderful Germanic god of the sky and war day. Yep, here we are on Tiu’s day again (the aforementioned god of the sky and war dude). It’s around 4 o’clock, Tuesday morning, as I type these words. And I’ve been up since about 2. Bleary-eyed, but thankful.

And, on this early Tuesday morning, I ran across Tiu.

No because I tried tiu…uh…to. And not because I had to. But simply because I was curious how this day of the week originated. Etymology can be very enlightening. Even when it leads to ancient mythological gods.

Yeah, those ancient people could sure come up with some doozies. They were so dense. And so superstitious. Not like us more evolved, sophisticated intellectuals these days. Because we have the advantages of technology to help us see life more clearly. More real. Uh-huh. We can subsidize our brains with artificial intelligence.

And it don’t get realer than that. No sir.

So, on this Tuesday morning (or whatever day and time it is where you are), I hope you rise and shine. With the added knowledge (you’re welcome) of the superstitious origin of Tuesday. All this talk about the day reminded me of a complex, artificial intelligence subsidized rhyme I wrote about it years ago. Get Ready for some…

Tuesday Weather

We’re gonna have Tuesday weather
Whether you like it or not.
Because today is Tuesday,
And we’ve got the weather we’ve got.

We’re gonna have Tuesday weather
From the morning till midnight
Because Tuesday is all day…
Between Monday and Wednesday, right?

We’re gonna have Tuesday weather
So go out and soak some in,
Maybe I’ll see you out there.
I’ll be the one with the big grin.

Stay tuned,

Number 8 is great and I can hardly wait

The number 8 is said to represent new beginnings. And I could share some interesting Bible stuff to emphasize how that could be true. But YOU might be somebody who isn’t impressed with “Bible stuff,” even when there’s some mighty impressive “coincidences” scattered all through the book.

The number 8 DOES represent new beginnings, though. Even to you.

For example, every week has 7 days. Even yours. So, at the end of the 7 days in the week, you begin a new week. And it stands to reason the next day would be day 8. Are you with me so far?

OK, I’m a musician. And every octave has seven whole steps. Of course, a chromatic scale includes half steps for a total of 12 steps. But octaves only have 7 different whole notes. But they’re called octaves. And oct comes from octo which means eight. So, what’s up with that?

Well, every octave starts with a particular note, proceeds up the scale, and returns to itself (at a higher pitch) on the eighth note. And that signifies completion. Sort of like putting quotation marks or parentheses around words. The lower starting note and higher matching note provide completion. Just try singing only the 7 different whole notes in a scale, do re mi fa so la ti. And stop. Your brain will tell you it isn’t finished. You need that 8th note.

OK, maybe I’m just singin’ to the choir.

Because I know a lot of my readers and listeners are Christians. And so, you probably already have a good handle on the importance of the number 8. If that’s the case, then maybe you’ll have a deeper appreciation for the syllabic representation of the number 8 in this short rhyme.

Don’t give any thing all you’ve got.
Look for wisdom no matter what.
Every thing can take you away
From what matters most day to day.
Please remember you will go on
Even after your body’s gone.
Where you go will depend on you.
Here’s what I suggest that you do:
Don’t let any thing steal your soul.
Ask for God to help you control
Your desires for things and not Him.
He can fill your heart to the brim.

© 2020

(12 notes in a chromatic scalechromatic scale and 8 notes in an octave = 12 lines and 8 syllables per line) And 12 X 8 = 96. But that’s a whole ‘nother story.

Six basic plots give us lots and lots

If you’re an avid reader or movie watcher, you’ve probably heard of the six basic plots of all stories. An article I read described them and mentioned which ones are the most popular. It said there are “six core trajectories which form the building blocks of complex narratives. These are:

  • Rags to riches (a story that follows a rise in happiness),
  • Tragedy, or riches to rags (one that follows a fall in happiness),
  • Man in a hole (fall–rise),
  • Icarus (rise–fall),
  • Cinderella (rise–fall–rise), and
  • Oedipus (fall–rise–fall)”

The article said the two most popular, the ones found most in books and movies, are “Cinderella” and “Man in a Hole.” And I can see that. In fact, we watched yet another man in a hole movie last night. The man was labeled a coward for “letting men die” in a rescue mission. Even though he saved 11 men. So, he, naturally, fell into a drinking decline for 5 years. Until he was the “only man alive” who could save people in a similar rescue mission.

I know. Not very original. But then, there’s nothing new under the sun.

Hmm…six basic plots. I find that interesting indeed.

And I find it interesting because I find Biblical numerology interesting. And Biblical numerology says 6 is the number of man or humanity. Because humans were created on the sixth day of God’s creation week. I don’t plot out my day or life based on numbers, by the way. That’s not a good idea.

But here’s what’s even more interesting. The “Cinderella” and “Man in a Hole” plots both line up well with the story of Jesus. Here’s what I mean.

Let’s take the “Man in a hole” scenario. Jesus was crucified. And He died and was entombed. “Fall.” But He rose from the dead (as He predicted He would), and there were lots of eyewitnesses. “Rise.” (aka: resurrection)

And it’s basically the same story with the “Cinderella” plot line. Jesus exploded onto the scene when He started performing His miracles and giving His incredibly insightful speeches. “Rise.” And just like in the other scenario He was crucified. And He died and was entombed. “Fall.” But He rose from the dead (as He predicted He would), and there were lots of eyewitnesses. “Rise.” (aka: resurrection)

You can say it’s a fairy tale, just another book or movie. But that doesn’t erase the Truth. You can say the story of Jesus was simply written by men with an agenda. But that only shows me you haven’t actually read the book. You can even say eternity doesn’t exist for anyone. But that’s a hopeless plot line.

And people need hope. You and I need hope. Fortunately Jesus made sure we have it. In Him.

So, out of the six basic plots, make your life’s story one of the two most popular.

Maybe you’ll rise to prominence, eventually die, but go to Heaven. Rise, fall, rise. Or you’ll live an ordinary life, eventually die, but go to Heaven. Fall, rise. Either way, don’t let the big, bad world, or even the people to your left or your right, rob you of your joy.

Celebrate Resurrection Day 2023 this Sunday (April 9). Matter of fact, celebrate every other day of life your Creator has given you. Don’t be Oedipus. And don’t let your life be a tragedy because you chose unwisely.

Here’s a rhyme to celebrate Good Friday.

Happy Easter Day

There’s a story you might know
Of a man who was killed some time ago.
He did nothing that was wrong,
But some people made Him suffer for so long.

Still there’s good news you can learn
‘Cause He died to give you what you’ll never earn.
He was nailed up on a cross,
But the people didn’t understand the loss.

Then they took Him to a tomb,
And they laid His lifeless body in that room,
But the story didn’t end there.
There would only be three days He would spend there.

Happy Easter day…He arose!

Tortured soul gave up control to make me whole

For several years I’ve shared this song on Independence Day (July 4). But I believe it’s even more appropriate for the holiday (HolyDay) Christians, around the world, are about to share. A day that marks what one tortured soul endured a long time ago. Not to become a martyr. And not for some crime or sinful action.

No. That tortured soul endured agony for ME.

Because, on my own, I’m a blind, naked, and poverty-stricken wretch. Yeah, I’ve messed up. And believe it or not, I’ve messed up more than once. Gasp! Yeah. On some level or another, I mess up every day. And I’m embarrassed to admit it. Because the truth hurts.

And that truth about me actually hurt THE Truth. Yeah, that’s one of His titles. He’s also known as The Way. And The Life. And He subdued all His magnificent power, for a while, so that human beings could hurt Him for what I did. Not just “hurt Him.” Torture Him. In ways I hate to imagine. Because it’s difficult to blur or erase those images from my mind.

Here’s the thing. I decided, when I was 13, to admit responsibility for my mistakes. And that didn’t turn the rest of my days into an impeccable, spotless example of how to live. Far from it. But my decision gave me a Compass I could trust to get me back on course every time I messed up.

Here’s one song I wrote based on that faith decision:

On a related note, that song isn’t directed at only me. Because whether you like it or not, you’re guilty, too. I don’t know if you’re more guilty or less. Doesn’t matter. Your guilt is real. And there’s only one Way you can spare yourself from being a tortured soul and have…

Freedom

Faith working through love…
Let’s praise God for our liberty…
Christ paid off our debt…
Only in Him are we truly free.

Love leads into joy…
Law leads back into slavery…
God gave us The Way.
Just believe, and we’re truly free.

Freedom from the law that kills,
Freedom with our own free wills,
And freedom from the world of sin…
Just let Jesus in, let the joy begin
Share a hopeful grin, with the Lord “We Win”!
Praise God for what we can become
With our freedom.

What law couldn’t do
Jesus did with finality.
He rose up from the dead
And promised the same life for you and me.

So we have…

Chorus…instrumental…chorus twice

Dew drops and dawn and some days long gone

I was born in Colorado. And my parents moved away, when I was still very young, because my dad was in the Air Force. But also because they preferred other places. When I grew up and visited Colorado, I couldn’t believe they left that place. But maybe it was also because they were drawn to dewdrops at dawn.

And, for the most part, Colorado doesn’t get a lot of dew drops at dawn.

If you live there, you’re saying, “Yes it does, Tony. Are you kidding me?” But if you’ve ever lived in the humid South, maybe you understand what I mean. That moisture sometimes found on the grass, in the morning, in Colorado, can’t compare to the millions of tiny lakes on the grass down there.

Or should I say, down here?

Yeah, at this time in my life, I live back down in the humid South. And it has been extra humid here lately. After decades in Colorado, it certainly takes some adjustment. I would say “gettin’ used to,” but I never get used to it. (Side note: do you think it should be “use to” or “used to”)

Anyway…

I woke up at 2 a.m. (as too often happens) and after a couple of hours sat down at my tablet to write this post. I had something else in mind. But my dreary, somewhat foggy brain just wouldn’t go there coherently. It’s weird. But sometimes my mind seems to have a mind of its own.

So, I followed through on where my foggy thoughts led. And they led me to lyrics I wrote 48 years ago. But before I share them, I have to clarify. They’re not one of my personal recollections. The words are a fictionalized account of experiences compiled by a young, dreamy-eyed poet. And yet, in my mind’s eye, I DO see those dewdrops at dawn as I listen to…

Those Dewy Morning Flutter-by Songs

If I could only look through those amber eyes again,
I could see those lovely childhood days.
The days my father cherished.
Those times that never perished.
I would run by his side
Through the dewy, silent morning,
And the flutter-by birds sang their morning songs…
Those dewy morning flutter-by songs.
Oh the clock would steal the hours,
And I’d be welded to the powers of the fireside twinkles,
And my father’s whispered stories.
All the draperies were drawn,
And very soon the room was gone…
Lost in the world of those dewy morning flutter-by songs.
When I think nowadays
How my life was seldom bored,
I feel so empty all inside.
I have lost the knack for freedom.
Bring me truthful things; I need them.
Give me someone’s side to run by
Through the dewy, silent morning.
And listen…to the flutter-by birds
Sing their dewy morning flutter-by songs…
Those beautiful songs,
Those songs of my past,
Those dewy morning flutter-by songs.

Crude oil advantages with no ego bandages

I love how I can charge up my mobile devices and take them with me and use them for hours without even plugging in. Because it would be awful if I had to take a gas-powered generator with me everywhere. And keep it running while I got my work done. Can you visualize a bunch of remote workers, in coffee shops trying to talk (or think) over all that racket? But there ARE some crude oil advantages over solar and wind power options. And they’re significant.

Just saying “crude oil advantages” triggers a lot of people.

And I refer to people who’ve invested practically their whole intellect into the myth of fossil fuels. Of course, those are the same people who’ve invested their whole belief system into the millions of years myth.

What if I told you that “scientists in the US have worked out how to convert algae into crude oil in less than 60 minutes?” Seems, to me, like that would be something a world so myopically focused on the “scarcity of resources” should look into. But, maybe that’s just me (it’s not, by the way).

Turns out, I didn’t make up that algae idea out of thin air. Here’s a description of the process…

“Looking much like pea soup, a mixture of green algae and water is subjected to a temperature of 350°C and pressure of 3,000 PSI, which breaks the algae down into oil and gas. The scientists learned that a mixture of up to 80 to 90% water made the best algal ‘slurry’ for the process.

Just like crude oil that comes out of wells, the resultant oil can be easily refined into aviation fuel, gasoline, diesel and other products, and the gas can be converted to natural gas, with multiple uses such as household heating and cooking, and powering cars.”

Wow. 60 minutes to make crude oil we could use to do all those things we currently use crude oil to do. If only an established news program would spread the news. But who? Hmm…hey, wait a minute. 60 Minutes. Yeah, talk about having a marketing bonanza dropped in your lap! Hang on. I forgot. They believe the evolution fairy tale. So, even though they buy into that “trust science” mantra, they only trust evolutionary science.

So, stop the presses.

Evolutionary “science” claims it took millions of years to form from algae, plants, and other buried organic material. And that supposedly was the time required for the earth’s heat and pressure to turn it into crude oil.

But according to non-evolutionary science, the right heat and pressure can “form oil in ultrashort time periods.” Naturally, that science also backs up the Biblical account of a worldwide flood. And we certainly can’t have that. Because when you start spreading that news, people might believe God is real. And we certainly can’t have that.

But, back to the crude oil advantages.

Doesn’t it make sense to take advantage of a process that could ensure our efficient crude oil based technology and machinery runs on renewable energy? And since we can grow algae and turn it into crude oil in “ultrashort time periods” that makes it easily and efficiently renewable. AND affordable.

But, there’s the rub. Affordable and efficient and renewable crude oil. Well, that would mean government couldn’t control individual liberties with the flip of a switch. And the control freaks in “high places” certainly can’t have that.

So, the journey toward hell, in a handbasket, continues for America.

And the world. But, hey. At least we won’t go there with an atmosphere filled with “hydrocarbon emissions.”

We want to live in a fat-free environment, and
We want to make sure the ozone is intact,
And so we watch all those service commercials, and
It’s just so easy to sit back and react.

Is it just melodrama…for me to feel this way?
I wonder…is it just me,
Or does it all sound so cliché?
Does it sound that way…so cliché? (From the song, Cliché, off the Do Right Collection)

Here’s the whole song: (https://youtu.be/IuTNFMXIbfw)

Monday morning feeling doesn’t seem appealing

The Mamas and the Papas. Hard to believe that was actually a name for a band. But, yep, from around 1965 to 1968, they were very popular. And their melodies and harmonies were on the airwaves everywhere. One of their most famous songs would make you believe they didn’t like Monday morning much. They certainly didn’t trust it.

But what’s so bad about Monday morning?

As I write this, it’s early Monday morning in April of 2023. In fact, it’s the first Monday of the month. And, other than the horrendous condition our country and our world is in, I can’t find anything wrong with the day.

Matter of fact, this morning feels exactly like yesterday morning. Maybe not quite as cool as yesterday morning. But no big difference. So, why do so many people dread this first day of the week? If you know, share that with me.

But you know who really shines on Monday Morning?

Moms. Several years ago I shared what I mean about that.

Here’s what I said:

On Monday morning, moms all around America get out of bed, go to the kitchen, and start making breakfast for kids, dads, and even a little something for themselves.

This isn’t earth-shattering news. In fact, it isn’t even all that newsworthy. Especially when you consider these moms go through that same routine every other day of the week, too. But what makes it worth talking about, to me, is that these ladies never seem to get the appreciation they deserve. And I’m not talking about setting aside a day to honor mothers. I’ve never been a fan of calling one day a year “mother’s day” (same with father’s day, but that’s another story).

When you consider how many days a mom makes breakfast, lunch, and dinner (snacks too) for her kids, her husband, and even her kids’ friends…well…she should be regularly honored. You should just want to buy her a present just because. Not because it’s “mother’s day.” Just because. Because you love and appreciate all the things she does. Even if you don’t always think to tell her thank you.

Don’t misunderstand. I know there are actually bad moms out there. I’ve read the horrible stories in the news. But that doesn’t phase me. I know the vast majority of moms overflow with the special love God gave them. And the vast majority of them love sacrificially which has been described as “no greater love.”

So here’s my rhyming salute to you this Monday morning, moms!

Monday morning moms are the very best kind.
They get your week started in the best frame of mind.
They nudge you a little when you’re falling behind.
Monday morning moms are how love is defined.

Sunday morning drive to see why you're alive

If you’ve never taken a Sunday morning drive, you’ve missed something special. It’s not the dazzling, mind-blowing experience you had when you watched those superhero movies. So, even if I shared a cool driving video, most people would yawn and scroll on past.

But there’s something special about a Sunday morning drive.

You’ve gotta get out there earlier now than when I was a boy. Because Americans are on a whole different schedule these days. And if you head out too late in the morning, crowds might make you miss the magic.

I remember a Sunday morning drive Elgielene and I took, about nine years ago. We found a back road, high up on a mountain slope and drove across it to the next town. And, by the way, you don’t have to be on a back road in the mountains to enjoy a magical Sunday drive.

And I think the main reason those kinds of short road trips are magical is because with clear roads and no crowds, you can get a sense of clarity. A better connection with this planet you inhabit. It’s not new-agey. In fact, I believe it can help you see what an incredible design is present at every turn. And how all of creation is filled with purpose. And how the design is dependable year after year. Decade after decade. Lifetime after lifetime.

On our drive, nine years ago, I told Elgielene how it amazes me that all human beings can’t just live their lives, peaceably, without some twisted, deep-down, dastardly need to rule over others.

Because time, here on planet earth, is short.

Even if you could, somehow, manage to conquer and rule the whole world, you still reach the end of your life much faster than you might imagine. So, given that fact, the Golden Rule is so much better than “conquer and rule.” Wouldn’t you agree?

Sure, it’s an old-fashioned idea. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. And we need the Truth. Not just a world full of touchy feelies.

But Truth can make you feel guilty sometimes. And nobody likes that. So, touchy feelies spring up like weeds. But, not so coincidentally, Truth can set you free from that guilt. And the afterglow can last forever.

So, here’s my recommendation, on this first Sunday in April 2023. Go for a drive. Get off the main roads. Soak in the countryside. Pay attention to the real world. Not the presentations on social media and TV channels. And notice how everything, from the grass to the treetops, point toward Heaven. That doesn’t happen by chance.

All of creation points to the Savior.
We are all here by design.
All the environment and complex behavior…
The Glory of God makes it shine.

Stay tuned,

Pray for me? Or pray for you? Oh, whatever shall I do?

I think there’s a good chance that I have a tendency to pray for me more than I pray for you. I know, I know. It’s totally selfish. And I don’t feel good about it. But, hey, at least I’m admitting my shortcoming. And that goes on the “good” side of my ledger. Right?

And it’s not about “stuff” when I pray for me.

Although, there might have been a time or two I asked God to let me win the Powerball or lottery. OK, I’m human. So, sue me (that’s a joke, don’t sue me)

But when I pray for me, it’s for wisdom first. And then, I pray that the eyes of my understanding always be fully open and enlightened. And those kinds of prayers aren’t one-off’s. Because, did I mention I’m human? Yeah. So, like every other human, I need a renewed mind. On a daily basis.

It humbles me to admit I don’t pray for others as often or as well as I should. And I also don’t like to admit that even when I do, my prayers sound repetitious. And that’s despite the fact that I consider myself to be a more than adequate wordsmith.

This all came up in me, this morning, because I found an old article of mine that talked about 12 things you and I can pray for others. And, sadly, I haven’t followed my own advice, very well, with those suggestions, which actually came from the Apostle Paul by the way.

So, I’m gonna share those 12 things again. Just the way I wrote them eight years ago. And they’re still just as relevant. Because they’ll always be relevant. And essential.

Start praying for others to:

  1. Be filled with the knowledge of God’s will – not some silly ideas about what to wear today or what to eat but His will for eternal life
  2. Walk worthy of the Lord – praying and asking for His help is a good start
  3. Be pleasing the Lord – simply talk to Him about life’s problems, or how great the day went. He loves it when we talk to Him.
  4. Keep being fruitful in every good work – That happens by trusting in God to help make good choices.
  5. Keep increasing in the knowledge of God – Spend time listening to what His word says to your spirit.
  6. Be strengthened with all might – When God is on your side, it doesn’t matter who or how many are against you.
  7. Be equipped with patience and long-suffering with joy – It’s not much of a big deal to get through things complaining. But it’s a very big deal when you can get through things with a song in your heart and on your lips.
  8. Be partakers of the inheritance of the saints – That means you hope others come to know Jesus and accept Him as their Savior. And you want them to go to Heaven. Saints are people who believe and trust in Jesus.
  9. Be delivered from the power of darkness – The power of darkness is all around. It’s in TV’s, on CD’s, in the movies, and most of all in the air all around. Jesus delivers, or saves, people from the power of darkness. In fact, He’s the only one who can.
  10. Be conveyed into the kingdom of the Son of His love – That means a person becomes completely new when they trust in Jesus. They get a brand new spirit that will last forever. And they get to live with Jesus in a perfect place forever. His kingdom never ever ends.
  11. Be redeemed through His blood – It’s good to understand how big a price Jesus paid for us to live forever with Him. He shed His blood for us.
  12. Be forgiven of sins – And that’s what Jesus died and rose from dead to give us. He paid for all the bad things all of us do. And if we ask Him, He forgives us forever.

OK, there you have it. And if, as you go through any of those, you pray for me, make it about wisdom and perseverance. And a daily, renewed dedication to serve others well.

Abounding Grace

If this was the last day of my life…
If this was the last sunrise I’d see…
I’d still thank the Lord for my days
And His abounding Grace to me.

If this was the last thing that I wrote…
If this was my final poetry…
I’d still thank the Lord for His word
And His abounding Grace to me.

If this was the last time I could pray…
If this had to be my closing plea…
I’d hope you could say, “I love the Lord
And His abounding Grace to me.”

My fair share is over there

Oh yeah. You better believe I’m gettin’ my fair share. And I don’t care how many rich people have to ante up till I get it. Because I’m an American. And I want my piece of the American dream. I earned it. It’s my birthright as an American citizen. And, by golly, I’m gonna get it.

So, I’m gonna vote for candidates who’ll make sure I get my fair share.

Because voting is not only my right. It’s also my duty. So, my duty is to make sure the government keeps things fair. Sometimes that means you gotta take more from those who have more and give to those who have less. Who could possibly argue with that flawless logic?

Evidently, some “fools” believe they CAN argue with that flawless logic.

And those “fools” even include a former American President. Would you believe we’ve actually had someone in the highest office in our land who did NOT believe democracy is awesome? It’s true. I shared his view on the subject 10 years ago:

“America’s 2nd President, John Adams, had multiple negative things to say about this. He talked about how a democracy “soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide.” And I hear a lot of modern day “conservatives” lauding the constitution as our source of enlightenment and freedoms. President Adams said this about that… “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Yeah, 10 years ago (and even decades ago) I wrote negative things about the form of government we have. Of course, that’s not a popular opinion. Because Americans have been raised to believe democracy is the hottest brand going.

And maybe you’ve heard of this quote attributed to Alexander Fraser Tytler, a Scottish judge, historian, and writer: “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.”

Based on Tytler’s assessment of democracy, I’d say America is mighty close to the dictatorship phase. Because our multi-trillion dollar deficit is clear evidence of our loose fiscal policy.

But, hey, as long as the government gets me my fair share, who cares?

Right?

So, it’s important to elect Robin Hood politicians. And give them the power to take from those filthy rich people and spread the wealth around. Because we, the people, are the bosses. And those politicians work for US.

Yeah, right.

Here’s what Mr. Tytler had to say about that notion: “The people flatter themselves that they have the sovereign power. These are, in fact, words without meaning.”

If you truly believe your “vote” has the power to change your country for the better, you’re running with your eyes closed. Especially in light of the fact that America currently has a person with dementia installed in the highest office in the land. And another person, high on laughing gas, installed in the second highest office in the land.

Moronic marionettes.

But at least their puppeteers will manipulate them into doing what’s necessary to get me my fair share. And that’s all I (and all other good democratic citizens) need for a good life in this world.

‘Scuse me sir. Would you hand me my fair share?
Yeah, that rich guy has it, right over there.
I’ll be sure to vote for you, when you do.
Because I know you’re promises are true.

Deformed heart was the state of the art

I remember when, back in 1998, a renowned neurosurgeon told Elgielene and me to “get your affairs in order.” Have you ever been told that? It’s like somebody just dropped a heavy, dark blanket over your head. And I’ll get back to the neurosurgeon in a minute. But first, let’s talk about my deformed heart.

Uh-huh, my deformed heart was discovered after that “affairs” talk.

Yeah. 1998 wasn’t my best year, health wise. But I lived to tell the story. So, score one for the Tone Team.

Anyway…

Maybe I should clear up why I went to see the neurosurgeon. And how that led to the discovery of my deformed heart. It was all pretty weird for me, a guy who had always been VERY physically active.

First, during our year-long stay in Nashville, back in 1993, I noticed a nagging pain in my neck (no jokes about my wife). And I saw a chiropractor and a dentist, about it, while we were there. They both had no clue, even though they both offered advice and “treatment.”

Then, we moved from Nashville to the Tampa, Florida area. And that nagging neck pain continued. My work, back then, was full time in the live entertainment business. And I hauled my keyboards and sound system all around that section of Florida to play the islandy tunes the crowds enjoyed. But sometimes I’d pick up my keyboard case and almost fall down from the pain all along my spine.

I’d have to go easy for a few days. But then it would “work itself out.”

Those incidents continued, intermittently, when we moved back to Colorado.

And from 1994 to early 1998, visits to doctors provided no solutions. Until, finally, one doc prescribed a special CT Scan. And when the results came back, he called me into his office and said, “It appears you have something on your spinal cord. I’d like you to see a specialist.”

So, that brings me back to where I started this story. And how I got to that day when the neurosurgeon said I’d need a complicated surgery to remove a tumor on my spinal cord.

He explained to Elgielene and me that the tumor had grown on my spinal cord near the base of my skull. And he believed a surgery was the only viable option. I asked him what would happen if I didn’t have the surgery. And he said the first possibility was paralysis from the point of the tumor, down, which basically meant total paralysis. My right hand was already somewhat numb from nerve damage. So, that sounded like something I wouldn’t like.

And the second possibility was death. Whoa! That sounded a bit permanent.

Nope. We didn’t like either of those options. So, we decided on the surgery.

And about a month later, I lay on a table, had the back of my head and neck sliced open, and thankfully had the tumor removed. Afterwards, the doctor explained why the surgery had taken almost 8 hours. Because the tumor, with its tiny, fingerlike feelers, had attached itself to my spinal cord and surrounding nerves. So, there was a lot of delicate work that had to be done in order to avoid paralyzing me.

Thankfully, the neurosurgeon was one of the best.

And, except for that numbness in my right hand and a section of my skull (skip the numbskull jokes, others beat you to ’em), I’ve already enjoyed another 25 years of this gift of life on Earth.

So, who doesn’t love a happy ending? Right?

What’s that? Oh yeah, the deformed heart part.

Well, before I had the spinal cord operation, I had to undergo a series of tests to be sure my system would be able to withstand it. And that included an ultrasound of my heart. And that’s when they discovered (and showed me) my bicuspid aortic valve.

In case you don’t know, your aortic valve is supposed to have sort of a peace sign look to it. In other words, it’s supposed to be tricuspid. And healthy tricuspid valves open and close efficiently. But bicuspid valves tend to get leaky over time. Because they just don’t handle the blood flow as efficiently. So, Tony Tumorhead drew the short straw and got one of those.

Yippee, skippy.

But, again, I’ve lived another 25 years with that pesky valve. And, unlike the tumor, the pesky valve was with me my whole life. So, I guess that proves what you don’t know won’t hurt you? Maybe.

Well, it’s still better to have a deformed heart than a wicked one. Which, by the way, we ALL have. At least when it’s left to its own devices. Or should I say devising?

So, I confidently believe it’s crucial to connect your heart to your Source of Life. Otherwise, your options will be even more bleak than mine were if I had not chosen spinal cord surgery.

God is real. And it’s not uncool to say so. And your belief and trust in Him should not be based on something “old rules and regulations people” came up with. It should be a longing to have a relationship with the One who made you.

My recommendation is that you don’t go to your grave with a spiritually deformed heart. A heart that isn’t held in the hands of the one true, living, loving Creator who paid your debts so you don’t have to.

Instead, consider what every beat of your heart represents. Your life pulses because of God’s love.

In the middle of a heartbeat
Something small stirs…
Like the sound that a kitten makes
With pulsing purrs.
Your blood goes whooshing through your veins
From head to toe,
And you might just kinda wonder
What makes it go.
It’s the code down deep inside you,
It’s yours alone,
A gift from the eternal King
On His white throne.
So, hold your breath, be very still,
And then you’ll hear
In the middle of a heartbeat…
A love so dear.

Whispers in the wind or separate a friend

Why would somebody use the phrase, “whispers in the wind?” I’d say it’s usually to illustrate futility or loss. And I’d also say, it’s an ideal way to get that point across.

Whispers in the wind have no chance of being heard.

But whispers spoken into itching ears? That’s a wind of a different color.

You’ve probably done it. Because I believe, on one level or another we all have. Maybe not viciously. Or even with devious intentions. But it’s a good way to lose friends.

And that’s not just my opinion. Have you read what God says about that kind of whispering? He says it “separates the best of friends.” Wow. Not just any old friend. Even your best friends. Imagine losing your best friend because you whispered something, you shouldn’t have, about them to someone else.

When you consider how short your time is, here on Earth, is that whisper worth it?

In case you’re undecided on your answer to that question, let’s go to THE authority.

God says when somebody does something wrong to you, go and tell them. If they say they’re sorry, you just forgive them. That way there’s a good chance you’ll stay friends.

Plus, if you feel the need to whisper about someone to someone else, that’s a good indication you should keep it to yourself. Because if it was something good, or helpful, or edifying, you wouldn’t have to whisper. Right?

So, start today. And if somebody tries to push your buttons, stop and think about what God says. Then, smile (nothing irks button pushers like a smile). And say something like, “Well, that was certainly mean.” If they apologize, you can say something like, “OK, I forgive you. Now, let’s be friends and not be like that anymore.” It probably won’t be easy the first time. But it WILL get easier.

And if you “feel” you’ve just GOTTA say something about someone, just let your words be…

Whispers In The Wind

Backbiters, selfish thieves, and darkness everywhere.
Conceited, jealous outbursts, hurtle through the air.
But selfish ambitions and contentions will all end
And leave no traces, like the whispers in the wind.

What others have said shouldn't live in your head

Probably most everybody has been affected by this at least once. I have. And I’m talkin’ about what others have said about you. And how you’ve been negatively affected by it. I’m grateful, to my Dad, for giving me some priceless advice about that. And that was essentially this:

“Don’t let what others have said get stuck in your head.”

The reason we had that talk was because of my brain. Yeah, that’s right. In spite of you thinking I ain’t got one, I’ve actually got one. So there. And, evidently, teachers and the school system, way back in elementary school, thought it were a pretty good one.

When I moved from elementary to junior high (the correct name for it, not “middle school”), they inserted me into what they called “accelerated” classes. And that meant my classes would include subject matter beyond my “grade level.” For example, if the typical grade level taught mathematics, I’d also learn algebra. And when the grade level focused on algebra, I’d also learn accelerated algebra and geometry.

All that was true in other subjects, too.

And I loved the opportunity to learn all that extra stuff. To this day my brain can’t get enough. And the world is overflowing with new stuff to learn. But, back to the plot twist.

It wasn’t all buttercups and blueberries in my world of higher learning. Because, wouldn’t you know it, kids who weren’t in the accelerated classes found a way to poke fun of us kids in those classes. Sort of like any nerd movie or TV show you’ve seen. It’s weird how cruel kids can be. And it seems to come naturally.

So, the mocking and name calling had its intended effect. And I started to wish I wasn’t in those accelerated classes. Matter of fact, in the 7th grade, I decided to ignore my lessons and homework. And I let my grades decline. Nobody was gonna be able to make fun of this straight-A nerd anymore, by golly.

Then I got my first F.

Uh-oh. That’s when it hit me. I was gonna have to show my report card to my Dad. And I knew that nothing good could come from that. But, the day came, and I showed him the card. And, to my surprise, he didn’t get mad. He did something worse. At first.

Dad told me how disappointed he was in me. And that was like an iron rod to the heart. Because I always preferred when he was proud of me. Which, coincidentally, straight A’s on my report card always got me.

Then, he asked me, “Why? You’re so much smarter than this. Why did you let this happen?”

And I told him about how the other kids made fun of me for being a nerd. (Side note: I know it’s almost impossible for you to believe I was nerd, considering my incredibly handsome, suave persona. But, it’s a classic duckling/swan story.)

Anyway…

My Dad listened to my sob story. And that’s when he told me, “Don’t let what others have said about you determine your opinion of yourself.”

I won’t go into the details of the rest of his advice. The main point is, it took root. And I buckled down, read, and studied, and eventually got my straight A’s back.

And everyone lived happily ever after.

Yeah, no. Just because you choose to not let what others have said about you affect your opinion of yourself doesn’t mean life becomes a box of chocolates.

Because, it’s not just school kids who say the stupid stuff. Nope. Grownups do, too. More, actually. Especially if and when you do or have something they envy. And envy is so bad, it’s one of the characteristics of someone who isn’t going to Heaven.

Yikes!

So, here’s my advice to all you nerds…uh…naturally gifted people out there. Don’t waste a valuable moment of your time stressed about what somebody else says about you. Instead, focus on what God says about you. Because He knows you. And He knows what’s best for you. So He gets…

The Last Word

Keep a bolt of lightning in your brain
And a jar of honey in your heart.
Let love be the last word from your lips
Whether you’re together or apart.

Lightning is your passion over pain.
Honey is your holy hope within.
Send those feelings through your fingertips
And remember, always let love win.

If I’m elected, I’ll do my best to restore whirled peas. And bring hominy to every household. Because, c’mon people. Can’t we all just get along? After all, we’re one race. So, that’s a great starting point.

And speaking of whirled peas and hominy.

Let’s talk about how segregation can be a useful tool. That shouldn’t offend anybody. Right? Hello?

Hey, I’m talkin’ about the law. And since we’re a “nation of laws” (ha! That’s a good one!) I’m sure you’ve heard of “Mendel’s Law of Genetics”. It’s also sometimes called the “Law of Segregation”. That has nothing to do with race. It’s all about about your gene makeup. And mine.

Johann Mendel was the guy behind the science behind the “Law of Segregation.”

When Mendel was a boy, he learned the art of “grafting” by working in the orchards of his father’s landlord. That knowledge served him well. And it got him through most of his education. But, when it seemed he wouldn’t be able to continue, his physics teacher recommended he enter the monastery where he would be able to finish his studies.

He later became an Augustinian monk and was given the name Gregor. And Gregor showed how important even little peas can be.

Between 1856 and 1863 Gregor cultivated around 29,000 pea plants and discovered that different combinations of genes can be formed through the generations. But, here’s the clincher. New genes are never formed. In other words, he could never graft any pea genes and get corn or beans.

But why is that important?

Well, it confirms the many verses in the Bible where God says “according to its kind” or “after its kind.” There’s that little detail.

And it also illustrates how God’s amazing creativity provides a ton of variation within each species. But He gave each species its own genetic code. So a duck will never be a deer. A bug will never be a bird. And a monkey will never be a man.

NEVER. Not even if some man monkeys around with genetics.

But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe God doesn’t exist (I’d have to be a fool to actually make that claim). And if that’s true (and it’s not), then it’s all a moot point. And we’ll probably never have whirled peas and hominy. But…

What If I’m Right?

You think it’s wrong to talk of only one Way.
Live and let live is something you always say.
How could there be a God who no one can see?
When bad things happen, you say “Where can He be?”

You want some proof; maybe a word or a sign
That our existence could be all by design.
I say the proof is in the feel of a song.
But it’s invisible so you say I’m wrong.

But what if I’m right? What if it’s true
All of these things I’ve been sayin’ to you?

What if you die and it’s not the end?
What if your life is nothing you can defend?
You think I’m wrong…that I don’t walk in the light,
But what if I’m right?

So many people living inside a dream
Making a choice that even God won’t redeem.
I say choose Jesus because this life’s not long.
You say it’s nonsense, and you tell me I’m wrong.

But what if I’m right?

Important dates. Do not tempt the fates.

Here’s sort of a definition for the expression “to tempt the fates.” To do something you know to be dangerous, or probably be dangerous. Patrice thought driving that old car would tempt the fates; it was sure to break down. Yeah, that says it pretty well. And I wanna talk about two important dates I think you shouldn’t ignore. Just in case you’d rather not tempt the fates.

One of those important dates is today.

As I write this, today is the first full day of Astronomical Spring. Vernal equinox, the “start” of spring, happened in the middle of the afternoon yesterday. So, that makes today the first FULL day. And that has nothing to do with why today is one of those important dates I mentioned.

Today is one of those important dates because it’s TODAY. Right now. As I write this. And as you read this (or listen to it on the The Power of God’s Love Podcast). And, as I say (a lot), today is the only day you can do anything about. Yesterday’s gone forever. And tomorrow is always in your future. Never now.

So, that makes today exponentially more important every new day. Because it means you have one less day to live after today. And that leads to the other one of those important dates. Brace yourself. Because this is gonna be harsh.

The day you die.

Not “pass” or “passed away.” Not “slipped away.” And certainly not “gone on to a better place.” No. I said it like it truly is. The day you die. That’s when you discover whether or not your worldview was correct. And whether or not it served you well.

More than just a little important.

Wouldn’t you say? I would. In fact, I just did. But here’s the thing. Those two important dates could actually merge. Sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, if you’ve never heard it, but you could actually, literally die today.

So, I have a suggestion. If you haven’t already looked into the Christian option for what happens to you when you die, look into it. Right now. Today. While you still have breath. And before you “pass.” Because the Christian option says you run out of options once you die. But if you’re reading or listening to this, your options haven’t run out. So, make haste while your sun still shines.

Use this extremely important date to change your fate. Because…

You’re important to God in so many ways.
You can trust in His word through all of your days.
He listens real close to anyone who prays.
So, go talk to Him now and give Him your praise.

Stay tuned,

More to life than a butter knife

There’s more to life than stuff. OK. There. I said it. And I defy you (or anyone) to prove me wrong. Because you can’t.

Yeah, there’s more to life than fixins.

Fixins are just a Southern way of sayin’ stuff.

Not that I have anything against stuff. Believe me. I’ve got plenty of stuff. Just like most Americans. More than I need. And even in the poorest sections of the country, people have more than they need. Because, believe it or not, you don’t NEED a smartphone.

Gasp! That’s technoblasphemy.

But it’s true. And even though most kids these days wouldn’t know what to do without their devices, they’re not necessary. In fact, you might not believe this, but kids got by without them for centuries.

I saw a meme, this morning, that showed a picture of an old school phone I remember very well. It was fairly large. And families had one hanging on the wall. The meme said, “I used to talk on a phone that hung on the wall. And I would answer it without knowing who was calling.”

Good stuff.

Yeah, this world is constantly bombarding kids with the idea that they need the stuff. But the stuff can be stolen. What’s truly important, crucial, and necessary is something you can’t even see. A relationship with the One who made you. That’s why I wrote a song about the stuff and why you need to…

Beat The World

Every time you turn your back
There’s somebody there to pick your pockets
And so you see there’s more to life
More than love and rockets
Deal with reality the best that you can
Try to remember there’s a higher plan
That’s the only way to beat the world at its own game

Yeah…every time you make your mark
There’s somebody there to erase it
And people say that’s just the way it is
And boy you’d better face it
But you believe there’s gonna be a better day,
So you pray for strength and better words to say
That’s the only way to beat the world at its own game

C’mon and beat the world, and try to leave a dent
But don’t regret the time that you’ve spent
C’mon and beat the world, and try to leave a bruise
You need to know the life that you choose
Is gonna beat the world…

Every time you see the morning news
They talk about another killing
It’s beyond my power to comprehend
How the taking of life could be thrilling
Banish the dark side; live in God’s light
Rise and shine and you can win this fight
That’s the only way to beat the world at its own game

Oh, can you imagine…
If we were all serving the True God,
Would we still be living this way?

Irish luck might not be true, but I wish luck for you.

It’s March 17, 2023 as I write this. So, here’s an Irish toast for ya. “May your day be touched by a bit of Irish luck, brightened by a song in your heart and warmed by the smiles of the people you love.”

By the way, I don’t believe in Irish luck.

Or any other kind of luck, for that matter. But I’ll not be faultin’ ya fer believin’ it yer own self. And if ya find some at the end of a rainbow, I’ll gladly join ya in a bowl of Lucky Charms. Because, duh, they’re magically delicious.

And, on the other hand, I won’t be nay sayin’ something you might call Irish luck. Or your right to call it luck, Irish or otherwise. Because sometimes good stuff happens and you just can’t explain how it did. But know this. None of that means I’ll be forced to wear green today. Because my color is in the…

Blue Celtic Cloud

There’s a time in the spring and the last part of autumn
When the noise of the day goes away, and the world is not loud
If you lay down and listen, you might hear the music
Raining down from real high in the sky in a blue celtic cloud.

Oh…beautiful magical music…
Oh…finding its way to your heart…

Through the whispering trees the wind brings a message,
And it tells you to keep your eyes closed and keep your head bowed…
“˜Cause you have to be still to catch all the music
Raining down on your ears from the sky in a blue celtic cloud.

Oh…beautiful magical music…
Oh…finding its way to your heart…

One by one the notes float down
And form a song so you can’t frown…
So you smile and you laugh and you sing.
Then two by two and three by three
The notes begin their harmony.
Just lay back and enjoy everything.

Better off dead. Is that what he said?

I worked in a disco. Yep. It’s true. I was a bartender. And I also worked as what they called a “floorwalker.” That was one of the guys who (you guess it) walked around the floor to make sure they were having a good time and behaving. And at the end of the night, I sang Better Off Dead.

(Are you with me so far?)

I didn’t sing Better Off Dead every night.

But it was often. And it was because my fellow workers found out I could sing. And they challenged me to see if I truly knew every word to every Elton John song. Which I did. At the time. And one of those songs was from his Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy album.

It was the shortest song on the album. Just two minutes and about thirty-seven second. But it was super catchy. And the other workers, in the disco, dared me to get on the club’s huge sound system and sing the high harmonies. So, I did it. Then, they “demanded” I do it almost nightly. And I was happy to oblige.

The chorus to the song goes like this:

‘Cause the steam’s in the boiler, the coal’s in the fire.
If you ask how I am then I’ll just say “inspired.”
If the thorn of a rose is the thorn in your side.
Then you’re better off dead if you haven’t yet died.

Since my disco days I’ve gone through a lot of changes. From my musical position. To my musical preferences. And now to my musical musings on TonyFunderburk.com and in my emails, etc.

I discovered, to my dismay, that Elton John was a homosexual. And I’ve felt sorry for him ever since. Not because of his life on Earth. Because he’s rich enough to want for nothing. But for his eternal soul. Because Elton is an old man now. And each day he’s much closer to finding out what comes next.

Sadly, if my worldview is right (and the evidence says it is), Elton’s soul is in great peril. Yes, I know that he’s got millions of dollars and millions of fans. And I know I’m not better than him. But…

I’m Better Off

I think we can agree…I’m not better than you.
It isn’t very hard to believe that it’s true.
But let me say this now, and I hope you won’t scoff…
Though I’m not better than…I know I’m better off.

I’m better off…
If you say there is no Jesus and no Truth that ever frees us.
I’m better off…
If you say no bright tomorrow can erase all of your sorrow.
I’m better off…
For a multitude of reasons, an eternity of seasons.
I’m better off…
When I leave this dark theater, I’ll go live with the Creator.

So, I’m not better than any person who sins.
No, that’s an argument where no one ever wins.
But try to understand, and don’t grumble and cough,
When I say “trust the Lord“, and you’ll be better off.
