Writer, singer, illustrator Tony Funderburk says...when you get 13 questions from a three year old, be ready to give 13 Reasons Why

If you’ve ever been around a three year old for very long, you may have experienced the “why syndrome”. Inquisitive little minds want to know…need to know why. For some reason this popped into my head this morning, and I decided to write answers to things little kids ask “why” questions about. It just so happened that I came up with 13 reasons why. So, that’s how I got the title to this blog post…which will also be the title to this Rhyme Time.

See if you can figure out or come up with the “why” questions to these…

13 Reasons Why

Because you went first last time…
Because there is no more…
Because your hands are dirty…
Because I waxed the floor…
Because you just ate dinner…
Because we’re leaving soon…
Because we can’t afford it…
Because you use a spoon…
Because our friends are coming…
Because it caught my eye…
Because it’s way too early…
Because it isn’t dry…
Because I felt like writing
These 13 reasons why.

Stay tuned,

We need The Light in our hearts

It’s true that the brightest lights are in the darkest places. I’m sure you’ve also heard it said “it’s always darkest just before the dawn”. There’s a reason people come up with sayings like these. It’s usually because someone has gone through some terrible times and thought there would be no way out.

But lo and behold…we all can get through those dark times if we just stay the course. It’s only in giving up that the dark times win. Eternity is written on the tablet of your heart. That means you’re an eternal being. The you that you see in the mirror isn’t the person you will always be. It’s the you inside your body that goes on.

And when you refuse to let the troubles of this world keep you down, you can win. Then, you just might find yourself helping someone else win too. Believe me you will overcome and see…

The brightest lights
Shine into dark hearts
And chase away
The cold and dark parts.
The brightest lights
Help us see clearer
And love the one
Who’s in the mirror.
The brightest lights
Are in the flowers
That make us smile
In troubled hours.
When loved ones hurt
Or lose their fights,
We need to be
The brightest lights.

There's a rhyme and reason for these hot summer days. Writer singer illustrator Tony Funderburk says "enjoy".

When you’re young, still in school, and ready to go barefoot, those hot summer days are heavy on your mind. You start to picture yourself in a sparkling, clear pool with your friends. Or maybe you see yourself walking down white, sandy beaches.

It just seems like it takes forever for those days to get here. You do your best to keep your mind on your studies. But try as you might those daydreams of endless fun creep up in the back of your mind. Then they crawl right up behind your eyelids, and you’re floating away from your class and everyone in it.

Have you ever noticed how the older people are…the more they talk about how fast time goes by? When you’re young, those hot summer days seem to go on and on. But old people will tell you things like… “just wait kiddo, before you know it you’ll be my age, and you’ll wonder where the years all went”.

They seem so silly. Then one day…they’re right.

So…enjoy your hot summer days this summer. And don’t fret about what’s happening tomorrow. There’s enough in today to keep you busy all day.

The temperature is rising
On the weather dial outside.
So we should get the garden hose
And make a water slide.

Hot summer days feel cooler
When we swim down in the stream
And we run back home for dinner
And we find homemade ice cream.

As the evening sky grows darker
We go lie out on the grass,
And we hear the old folks talkin’
‘Bout how fast the years all pass.

Then we wonder why they worry.
Guess it must just be their ways.
We’ve still got our whole vacation
To enjoy hot summer days.

Now, jump on the The TRUTH. And be part of the growing band of believers who wanna show the world that life has Rhyme and Reason because God is Real.

Tony Funderburk says "be a friend". It's good for your heart.

I remember a long time ago I bought a birthday card for a friend. My favorite kind of birthday card was always the one that had a great picture on the front and was blank inside. That way I could write my own verse. Anyway…on this particular card I wrote a whole poem, which I don’t remember…and I don’t have a copy, but I do remember one line. It said “She said to have a friend you must be a friend“.

I’ve always liked that saying. If you think about it, it would be pretty hard to have a friend, if you weren’t able to be a friend. What good would it do that other person? What kind of friendship would they have if you were always taking from them and never giving back?

Right…it wouldn’t really be a friendship. It wouldn’t even be a friend boat, or dinghy, or canoe. It would be more like a friend unicycle and you wouldn’t be able to ride it.

So…you can do some things like Sally and Bobby and Sandy and Isabella in the poem below. Or you can make up your own way to be a friend. The main thing is…don’t let another day go by without you showing someone you care.

Silly Sally likes to dilly dally…
With knobby Bobby at the downtown lobby.
Dandy Sandy has some handy candy…
When Isabella drops her pink umbrella.

You can share kids…if you care kids…
You can do it here and there kids.
Set your heart free…you can start free…
And don’t let it end…now go be a friend.

Rainbow riders are riding rainbows in Tony Funderburk's writing for kids.

What’s your favorite color? Mine’s blue. Do you like purple? Red? Pink? Orange? Yellow? Green? Brown? Do you like to see all the colors together in one giant arch? If so, you may be one of those rainbow riders.

Rainbow riders are very special people. In the first place, they wear special boots that help them jump real high into the sky. Then they can jump on a brand new rainbow and ride it all the way around the world. And rainbow riders love to eat colorful fruits and berries. They fill their plates with cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, honeydew, and pineapple. They know if they eat plenty of fruit they’ll be able to jump higher and ride the rainbows.

Now, if you just sit back and close your eyes and look real hard, you might just see some of those rainbow riders riding rainbows behind your eyelids. And if you think real hard, you might jump up and join them…

Riding on a rainbow after all the raindrops fell…
Little rainbow riders didn’t hear the dinner bell…
So they kept on riding through the sky above the clouds…
High above the weather and away from all the crowds.

They could see the sailing ships and fishes in the sea…
They could see the pyramids and lands of mystery…
All the world was like a book with video and sound…
And they could turn the pages just by going ’round and ’round.

Little rainbow riders ride the rainbows till they fade…
Then they land on earth and have a picnic in the shade…
They fill their bowls with berries and juicy melons too…
And fall asleep and dream of riding rainbows through the blue.  © 2013

When you follow Tony Funderburk's writing for kids, you might just find yourself walking in the woods of wonder.

In Colorado, a really fun thing to do is go walking in the woods on a day when the evergreen trees smell so good. Pine needles crunch under your feet, and creatures scamper off to hide as you round the bends of the trail.

When it’s warm in the summer, you can still cool off in the forest. The wind whispers through the trees, and if you lay down in the mountain grass, you might just fall asleep to the soft noises.

Now, imagine a forest full of all kinds of trees. And not just regular green trees, but trees of all colors, shapes, and sizes. Trees that can only grow in your imagination. Then imagine a few creatures that might live there…and a few things you might do and think there. And that’s where you’ll start…

Walking in the woods of wonder…
Leaping off a limb of lights…
Slipping down a secret scots pine…
Kiwi trees are flying kites.

All around are dancing aspens…
With their white and wondrous wings…
Bristling branches and sweet breezes…
Where a speckled sparrow sings.

Rainbow redwoods rake the blue sky…
Mystic music mingles in…
Dragons drift by in their dreamboats…
Lemon larkspurs live within.

Walking in the woods of wonder…
Thinking thoughts of thrilling things…
Life’s a lilac filled with lightning…
We’re all wearing water wings.

The world needs dreamers. Tony Funderburk's writing for kids shows you how to be one.

Dreamers are often misunderstood. They’re thought of as eccentric, sometimes lazy, or believers in pie-in-the-sky nonsense. As much as I might disagree on a certain level, I still understand it. After all, a lot of dreamers appear to be in a fog a lot of the time. And many dreamers don’t have a clue as to how to build up a foundation for their dreams.

Maybe you’ve heard something like “it’s OK to have your castles in the air…just build a foundation to hold them up”. It’s excellent advice. But my point today is this…if you don’t see yourself as a dreamer…if you see yourself in a negative light…think about becoming a dreamer. Christians say “count your blessings”. If you live in America, you most likely have many to count even if you don’t think so. Your needs are probably met. I didn’t say “wants”. I said needs. And when your needs are met, you’re a candidate to become one of life’s dreamers.

So…smile and help someone else to smile. It’s really worth it.

There’s a special place for dreamers
Who believe in love and hope.
You can go there and enjoy it,
If you don’t just sit and mope.

If today you’re feeling sorry
For yourself, well stop and think…
Do you have food on your table?
Do you have water to drink?

So when things just don’t seem happy
And no sunshine lights your face…
Dream your dream and make a difference
With some love and hope and Grace.
