Disappointment and expectations seem to be real close relations

Disappointment and expectations

It’s weird how often disappointment and expectations are connected to each other. And I’m sure I don’t have to tell you (although I’m about to tell you) that it’s because people tend to base decisions on feelings. And not logic and reason. Now, I can see how tempting it is to go with feelings. Because we should feel. Especially when it comes to fellow human beings. But life is about so much more.

Disappointment and expectations seem to be real close relations

I’ve had my own disappointment and expectations this past week.

And they’re all connected to feelings. But not emotional feelings. In this case, it’s how I’ve had to deal with some setbacks, I didn’t expect, after the sinus surgery a few weeks ago.

During the first 10 days after the surgery I felt like everything was improving daily. And then it all sort of leveled off. And in the past week, I’ve dealt with what feels like some setbacks. I haven’t improved. In fact, it feels like I’ve gone backwards quite a bit. But I know (because logic and reason tell me so) that healing and “normal” don’t just happen in a few days. But I’d be lying if I told you I don’t wish they would.

Anyway…

The reason I’m sharing this with you is not for any poor, poor pitiful me stuff. It’s just to let you know how life’s disappointments don’t have to define you. And they happen even to people, like me, who are always writing and singing about faith, hope, and love.

Plus…

It’s extremely important to remember how none of your life’s challenges were caused by some predetermined plan from God. Far from it. In fact, God wants each and every person on the planet to have perfect health. But sin keeps that from happening. But guess what?

Sin won’t win
When you let Jesus in.

Immortality Song and won't you sing along

Who can sing the immortality song?

The Bee Gees wrote a version of it. And they sang background vocals when Celine Dion recorded it back in 1997. Pearl Jam also wrote and recorded their own Immortality song. And plenty of other songwriters and songs have focused on it. But they all fall short of the full meaning and power and understanding.

Immortality Song and won't you sing along

My Immortality Song will fall short, too.

Because no one can fully comprehend or express the full meaning and power of eternal life. And that’s because all we experience, here on Earth, is temporary. Even if you live to be 100. And even if every day of that hundred years was filled with good health. Temporary.

And I’ll bet, no matter how many years you live, your life here on Earth will feel like a few blinks of your eyes to you. And I wouldn’t be surprised if you get to the end of it wishing you had done more.

But I don’t wanna just dump a bunch of gloom and doom on you.

Because there’s a silver lining to this temporary, mortal life you cling to. It’s an opportunity. A full-fledged, free gift opportunity. And no one (not even you) can afford to pass it up. An opportunity to turn from temporary to eternal. From mortal to immortal.

And once you seize the opportunity, you’ll never be alone again.

And you’ll be in the hands of the only source of immortality. The hands of your Creator who’ll help you sing the immortality song. That’s why Paul wrote to Timothy and told him to:

“…pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.”

Immortality, in totality,
Is a gift that no one ever has deserved.
But we have it still, if we only will
Grab onto the life that Jesus reserved.

Prophets and kings and evergreen things

Do you ever wish you were one of those prophets and kings?

Oh yeah, sit back and close your eyes. And imagine you’re one of the prophets and kings from days of old. Ah, the good life. People jump at your command. And governments and nations bend their ears to your every word. Power beyond your wildest dreams. Or…

Prophets and kings and evergreen things

Maybe prophets and kings don’t have it so good.

And maybe living in a dream world isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Of course, living in the real world ain’t no picnic either. But at least you know where you stand. You DO know where you stand…right?

Just in case you think your lot in life is unfair and unfun, consider what happened to many of the so-called “elite” back in the “Bible days.” Many were murdered. And lots more dealt with dysfunctional (and even diabolical) offspring. And others lived in rebellion against God and that didn’t go well for them.

But at least they were the Chosen ones, so it all eventually turned out well. Right?

Not so fast.

Like I said, many of those guys didn’t do what God chose them to do. In fact, so many of them opposed God, it’s almost as if He gave them their own will and didn’t plan out their days. Can you imagine? Because we all know God’s exhaustive foreknowledge is clearly seen in how He organized every step of our lives before we were ever born. Right?

So, it kind of makes me wonder (and I hope it makes you wonder) how those guys in high positions could do things so contrary to God. And even more than that…why would God allow it? Why wouldn’t He just nudge them back on to the steps He already lined up?

Hmm…maybe your future (and my future) isn’t planned out in every detail.

And maybe you and I are free to decide where we wanna be forever. But wait. That means the bad stuff that happens in life might not be part of God’s ultimate plan. Uh-oh. What if it means the bad stuff are the consequences of our own bad decisions.

Say it ain’t so, Joe!

But then again, you know what? Maybe it would explain a lot of things. Oh man, it’s all so confusing. Except it’s not when you find out the words in the Bible show How God is the source of love. And He’s a risk taker. So, He decided to give man the freedom to choose Him or not. And therein lies the rub.

Even prophets and kings choose Him not.

But I decided, a long time ago, to go with God. And I knew I wanted to be in the presence of love. I found out I could be there forever. And I’ve always been grateful and thankful for the ability to choose. Because it means my love will be evergreen and growing.

So, prophets would prophesy lies.
And kings did despicable things.
Just because they could. And I’m sure they understood
How God doesn’t use puppet strings
To make us behave like a slave.
And not see how we can be free.
No, He’s really real. He’s a Father who can feel.
And I want that eternally.

Songs for attention - not just honorable mention

Who writes songs for attention?

Short answer. Me. But before I go any further let me explain how I don’t mean songs JUST for attention. I’m talking about songs with an ulterior motive. And, in my case, that motive included breaking down a woman’s resistance. No, not the way you’re thinking. Get your mind out of there.

Songs for attention - not just honorable mention

I wrote songs for attention because they were my secret weapon.

Way back in 1985 I met a beautiful girl. And a bolt of lightning struck my amygdala and cerebellum like never before. Some might call it love at first sight. But it wasn’t that sugar-coated, namby, pamby silly lovestruck moment you see in dorky movies. Far from it. In fact, I didn’t even attempt to pursue her at that time. Because, as it turned out, she was married. And I already had a girlfriend.

And this striking woman lived and worked in an establishment, in Florida, where my band and I were booked for a month. So, any thoughts of a relationship were doomed from the start.

Then, almost a year later in April of 1986, I was booked back in that establishment as a solo entertainer. And I was booked as the “house act” for the top floor, snazzy jazzy, club overlooking the bay. So, that meant I’d be there for awhile. And on my very first night to perform, there she was. Working in that top floor club full time.

And we lived happily ever after.

NO!

The dream girl was still married to another. But at least I could see her and talk with her on my breaks. And as my time there continued we got to know each other a little better. And that’s how I discovered what an amazing woman she truly was. Because I could see she was doing her part to be true blue to a husband who was anything but. And that’s a story all its own.

As it turned out, I decided to go another way in my musical career. And I ended my “house gig” after only three months. That’s when my brother and I went on the road, full time, for a couple of years. And I left the dream girl behind. But…

Every once in a while I’d send her a card or note from the road. And I’d mail it in care of where she worked. Once in a while I’d be somewhere long enough to get mail in return. So, I’d write and ask her to write me. Purely as friends. And she only wrote me a few times in two years. And each time was a polite letter saying I shouldn’t write her anymore.

Shot down in a blaze of glory.

So, it was definitely time to throw in the towel and add it up to experience. Right? But I didn’t have one of my own towels handy, and I didn’t wanna steal one from a hotel. So, I didn’t throw in the towel quite yet. I kept sending a card or note every once in a while.

After a couple of years on the road, with my brother, I decided I wanted to come in for a landing. And I moved to Lakewood, Colorado with just my savings and dreams of making my stand in the Rockies.

I sent a few more cards and notes to the dream girl. But quite a bit of time passed with no replies.

So, I decided it was time to move on and maybe even find another “dream girl” in Colorado.

But then, one day in the Spring of 1989, I found an envelope in my mailbox from the girl in Florida. And she told me how she’d spent the previous months filing for, paying for, and getting a divorce. She said how there had been no marriage for a couple of years. And that she was finally over trying to make it work with a totally unfaithful man. And she said if I was still interested, she’d like me to call.

I said, “No way!”

Ha! Not really. I said, “Yes, I’d like that very much.” So, I called, and we talked for a long time. And that was when long distance calls were still awfully expensive. So, even though we started calling each other more than we could afford, I decided to get even more serious about letter writing.

And that’s when she began to get letters in her mailbox literally every day. Well, except for Sunday. But every other day. And many times, I’d send two, three, and four letters on the same day. Because I knew the beautiful girl would be wooed by guys right there where she lived. And I needed some sort of advantage.

That’s when I started writing, recording, and sending her songs. I knew other guys would have location advantage. But I was counting on my songs to get her attention. And I wrote her a bunch of songs…including one for her name.

As it turned out, my secret song weapon helped me win the day. And she asked me to visit her. I did. Then, she visited me. And then a knot was tied in a couple of hearts that is still strong over 31 years later.

So. There’s are some lessons in there for you single guys. I’m not gonna point ’em out. It’s up to you to find ’em and use ’em. But I will say this. If you’re a musician, and you decide to woo a woman with letters and songs for attention, make them be about true love. Not sappy. And certainly not with the selfish motive of sex. Instead, tell her things like…

I Like Your Style

I feel lonely…do you think about me?
I want to be feeling your arms around me.
And I need your touch “˜cause it would help me so much

I like your style…oh yeah
It always makes me smile
It could be habit-forming; watch out!

I really like your style…oh yeah
My finger’s on the dial
Ready to call you again; watch out!
“˜Cause I like your style…

I hear you say…just how you missed me today
And my eyes shine; I hope I’m not out of line
To say my heart and yours should not be apart

repeat chorus…

Anything I hear you say…
Always melts my heart away…
I like your style…

Do something different today and take life another way

Maybe you should do something different today

There’s a huge reason why the world is in such a mess today. And it’s been in this mess for just about as long as humans have existed.  Which is from the first week the planet was created, by the way. But that’s another (but essential) story. And this whole mess could be cleaned up and swept away if everybody would do something different. Just this one thing.

Do something different today and take life another way

Trouble is…most people absolutely refuse to do this one something different.

And it’s weird. Because it’s free. And I’m not talking about the fake free, like government free or buy one get one free. I mean actual free. Plus, the interest compounds immediately. And the rewards and savings add up forever.

I believe, if I asked 10 people, face to face, if they’d do this one thing, 9 out of 10 would say yes. But I also believe 8 out of those 9 wouldn’t really do it. Oh sure, they might make a superficial showing of it. But they’ll probably never get to the heart of it. Because most people don’t know how.

Instead, most people choose what they think is the easy road. Because their motives are selfish. And selfishness is the diabolical arch nemesis of this one different thing. So, selfish people actually become pawns for the villain.

But one decision, by mankind, could change the whole world.

One simple act of will. And one tiny tweak of mindset.

Once the mind changes, and the will is set in a different direction, the body will follow. And hearts will change, metaphorically, in ways only a few people dream of right now.

I’m one of those dreamers who’d love to change hearts
‘Cause I know that’s where change in this old world starts.
But what could change hearts? Do I push? Do I shove?
No. I know you’ll guess, it can only be love.

Assume the worst and go with that first

OK, let’s be positive and assume the worst

That sounds like a good plan. Right? “Uh, no, Tony. It sounds negative. Not positive. And why would anybody automatically assume the worst?” Well, I’m glad you asked. Because I’m gonna toss this boomerang and see if it comes back to me.

Assume the worst and go with that first

When you assume the worst in people, first, it’s safer.

How many spy movies and superhero movies and dramas on TV have used this phrase? “Trust, but verify.” And how many times has that been a stupid thing to say? (buzzer sound) Answers are: Lots and lots of times. And… Every. Single. Time.

“But Tony. You’re a Christian. And you always say I should love my neighbor as myself. Well, if you love your neighbor, shouldn’t you also trust your neighbor?”

Yeah, I can see why you might ask that question. At least I can see why…if you don’t understand human nature. And sadly, the vast majority of people on our little blue planet don’t. And that includes Christians.

“Uh, what’s human nature got to do with trust?”

When you understand how most people, in the world, are gonna choose to hate God, you understand how you shouldn’t automatically trust anybody. And it’s an extremely dangerous world…in case you hadn’t noticed. So, you gotta be on your guard. And that means, for your safety, you should assume the worst in people. And only trust them once they prove themselves worthy of your trust.

“But Tony. You know what they say about assume. It makes an a…”

I know. And there are times when that can apply. But those times don’t include when you first meet somebody. Because selfishness was the original sin. And it’s thriving like never before. So, your best bet is to assume people are doing what they do for selfish gain. And I guarantee their motive will do you harm if you make the false assumption that people are basically good.

So do yourself a favor and be wise
To people who approach you in disguise.
You might know, in the end, they truly are your friend.
But till you do, keep wisdom in your eyes.

If wishes were fishes they'd still be delicious

Ah yes. If wishes were fishes…

If you do a Google search for that phrase “if wishes were fishes”you’ll probably find a lot of different people adding a lot of different endings. Some of them make measly attempts at rhymes and fall short. Like “we’d all swim in riches.”Please don’t say I have to tell you why that’s a measly attempt at a rhyme.

If wishes were fishes they'd still be delicious

You could make believe just about anything if wishes were fishes.

But fortunately wishes and make believe don’t make the world go “˜round. Because what if they fell into the wrong hands, hearts, and minds. We might all end up in a world of chaos. And a world where some people yell at other people because they’re just more righter than the rest.

Naa…that probably wouldn’t happen.

But what if some people wanted to wish other people away just because they have a different skin color?

Ok, I’m sorry for even bringing it up. We live in modern day America. And that would just never happen.

But what if somebody wanted to wish somebody else away just because they believe in God? Surely that’s a possibility.

Nuh-uh.

Uh-uh.

No way!

Way!

Kids…kids. Stop arguing. I’m starting to wish I’d never brought it up.

Here’s the point. You were hoping there’d be one. Right?

We live in a world that’s real. And real bad things happen. To every kind of person. In every part of the world. And no amount of touchy feely, sappy quotations and memes is ever gonna change that. There’s only one thing that will ever make a difference. And if you’re gonna wish for anything at all, wish for the ability to pray and ask God to help you love your neighbor. Or better yet, skip the wish part.

And head straight to prayer for wisdom and love,
Two lights in a world filled with dark.
Where others will only leave questions you’ll leave
A big, bold exclamation mark.

Money is the root of all evil

Money is the root…

So, if money is the root of all evil, why aren’t more people willing to give all theirs away? And I mean ALL of it. Because why would you want even a little possibility of evil in your pockets? Or bank accounts? Or city, state, or nation? After all, if you wanna get rid of a weed, you gotta get rid of the root.

Money is the root of all evil

(Quick side note: sadly, too many people ARE willing to allow their money to be stolen by government.)

But what if money is NOT the root of all evil?

Wouldn’t that be great? And wouldn’t it make it a lot easier to feel good about having more of it? Yeah. That would be great. But what’s a God loving, patriotic dude to do?

Hey wait!

Maybe there’s something in the Bible about it. I know that’s crazy talk. But I’m gonna go take a look. Keep yourself occupied for a few minutes. And I’ll be back as soon as I can.

Ok, I’m back. Whoa, you’re not gonna believe this. Well, lots of people won’t because it’s from the Bible. But check it out. A direct quote, from the Bible, about money and evil. “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

So, it’s actually the LOVE of money. Not the money itself. And it’s “A root” and not THE root. Also, because some people love their moolah, they even stray from faith. And they end up with a lot of sorrows. But none of it is from the money. It’s because they love their riches and their goodies.

But why would God inspire Paul to write about it in a letter to his protégé, Timothy?

Maybe it was because Paul wanted to be sure Timothy was blessed with Godly discernment. Because he also told the younger guy, “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.”

And I know Paul had no problem with anyone having plenty of money to live on. But he wanted to be sure we understand not to trust in riches. Because they can be taken away from you faster than you can say, “America will never be a socialist country” and already be wrong.

So, build your house and home
Into a honeycomb
Of sheer delight and filled with love and light.
But always be content
After it’s all been spent.
You’ll be alright ’cause you are God’s delight.

August 3

It’s August 3, 2020. Do you know where your heart is?

As of today, August 3, in the year 2020, I’ve written somewhere between 70,000 to 100,000 words about the Rhyme and Reason for life. And that’s because, every day so far, I’ve shared something to be optimistic and hopeful about. And I know that sort of talk isn’t cool or trendy these days. But I don’t care. Because I know something about life that most people in the world want nothing to do with.

Before I explain, check out these tidbits about August 3 of this year.

Today is the 216th day of the year. And that means there are 150 more days till the end of 2020. And this is the 31st Monday. So, I guess it’s the 31st time millions of people are getting up with the Monday blues. And here in America, this is the 32nd week of the year. Plus, this is the 44th day of Summer, which, if you’re counting, is a little less than halfway through the season.

I know the birthstone for today (and this month) is Peridot. And I pay attention to that because August is also the birth month of my beautiful wife, Elgielene. So, it’s important to know such details. Mom didn’t raise no fool in me.

Now, back to my initial assertion.

Why would I say I know something about life that most people in the world want nothing to do with? Short answer. Because I do. And that “something” is its source.

Life didn’t arise from non-life. That’s absurd in the highest order.

But millions of people (and probably billions) either believe it did or they believe something else just as absurd. And either way, they’re putting the blissful contentment of their soul at risk. Not risk like in some silly superhero movie. I’m talking real, unadulterated, eternal risk.

And risk don’t get no riskier than that.

But what does it matter? Right? As long as I’m content with my choice. And as long I’m secure in the knowledge of my final destination, who cares what happens to all the rest?

Here’s why I share what I share.

Because I care.
And here’s why I say what I say.
Because The Way
To eternal life is narrow.
Truth is straighter than an arrow,
And you’ll find out
Either way. It might be today.

Take a second and join the growing body of believers who’ve already signed up for the TRUTH Journal. When you do, I’ll send you links to 2 songs and 2 books that adults AND kids enjoy right away. Then, I’ll send you flashes of light from the faith, hope, and the power of God’s love.

Thank you letter and yes I'm getting better

A thank you letter

It’s weird (and annoying) how my mind works (or doesn’t) sometimes. And what I’m talking about is how I’ve been meaning to get to this thank you letter every time I’ve opened my text editor for a week. But instead I’d write and talk about something else. And now another week has passed without me saying it. So…

Thank you letter and yes I'm getting better

Here’s the thank you letter you deserve.

And for those of you who might have landed here for the first time, I’ve just gone through a balloon sinuplasty surgery. And that was after dealing with a respiratory issue for over two and half years. But it took that long to figure out what was going on. So, it has been more of a struggle than I ever imagined I’d endure when it first started back in 2018.

That being said…a lot of people have prayed for me. And that means more than you’ll ever know, this side of Heaven. Because I know wherever two or more are gathered, in prayer, God is there. And I know He hears our prayers.

So, thank you so much for adding me to your thoughts and prayers. I’m honored and humbled to think how many people did that.

And the good news is, I believe I’m on the mend now. Since the problems included my lungs, it will still be some time before I get back to my normal self. But I believe I can do it now that my head is clear and able to fight off infections.

Now, what I’m really looking forward to is getting my singing voice back. Because I wanna start writing and singing songs to help you stay up and motivated. For the ongoing battles of life. And the ongoing struggles against a world that increasingly doesn’t want people like you and me around.

So, let’s stay strong, and let’s smile.
And let’s commit to being here awhile.
And let’s be well, and let’s pray
For the strength we need as long as we stay.
We’ll be fine, and we’ll win
Because we know who’s living within.
Yeah…we’ll win.

Gonna be alright through the long dark night

Relax. It’s gonna be alright.

I’m a big fan of the old black and white movies. Especially from the 1940’s and 50’s. And I remember a scene from an Alfred Hitchcock movie called “Strangers on a Train” where a guy tells one of the main stars, Robert Walker, to relax. And Walker’s character snaps back, “I don’t wanna relax!” I won’t give away what’s going on. Check it out for yourself. And that sort of scene has played out in so many movies and TV shows. Because there always seems to be those who believe everything’s gonna be alright and those who don’t believe that for a minute.

Gonna be alright through the long dark night

When somebody tells you to relax, or at least makes that suggestion, do you immediately tense up? Or maybe you even get mad. If so, have you ever wondered why that is? Because if someone who cares about you says, “Relax, it’s gonna be alright,” it’s probably because they want you to relax and feel better. Makes sense. Right?

But maybe you think, “How do YOU know it’s gonna be alright?”

And, on the surface, that’s sort of a valid point. Unless somebody DOES know.

And maybe that’s what makes you mad. Because how can they already know that and you don’t?

Well, I’m gonna go out on a limb here (as I often do) and say everything will NOT be alright. And if you’ve followed me for any length of time at all, you know I’m not a pessimist. So, why would I say that? Because it’s true.

Everything includes everything. And it leaves nothing out. So, to say everything will be fine, when it’s crystal clear that’s not even true right now, is just plain silly.

But here’s the thing.

Everything can eventually be alright.

But it won’t just happen, for anyone, by accident. No, it’ll be like most all things in life. And that means it’ll come down to choices you and I make. What are you gonna choose to do? And what kind of person will you choose to be? And will you choose to find out if truth exists? Or do you plan to skip the choosing part and just let life happen? Guess what. That’s a choice.

So, make good choices you can live with.
Discern what’s true or make believe.
I hope you choose to live forever.
It’s a free gift you can receive.

Stay tuned,

Your reason for being is a truth that's worth seeing

What’s my reason for being?

It’s another form of the age old question. “Why am I here?” And I think it’s more than mildly ironic how logic is so coveted in a world filled with feelers. Because if whatever is right in your own mind is right, then there might not be a reason for being. You might just be happy, little cosmic accident. But if you’re NOT the ultimate source for what’s right, then that’s a thought from a different rainbow.

Your reason for being is a truth that's worth seeing

By the way, your reason for being is exactly the same as mine.

But before I tell you (for those of you who don’t already know the answer), I’d like to say, up front, your future is NOT set in stone. And it’s not written in God’s handwriting on a spiritual tablet of time.

And that’s good news and bad news.

It’s good news because it means you get to choose your actions each day of your life. And you get to see where those actions will take you. But it’s bad news because it means you get to choose your actions each day of your life. And if you’re gonna make bad choices. And your choices are gonna lead to bad things happening.

But don’t worry. It’s not like that has to be how it goes ALL the time. Remember, I said your future is NOT set in stone. And no one’s keeping score. There’s no scorecard that shows how many bad choices versus good choices you made.

Unless…

Unless there IS a scorecard on you. And if there is, how do you think your life’s scorecard adds up? Mostly good? Mostly bad? Do you even have a clue? And does it even matter to you?

Well, let me throw another log on this fire.

What if there was only one bad mark on your scorecard? And what if you discovered, when you died, that you’d spend eternity in torment for that one bad mark? On top of that, what if you discovered that other people who had a lot more bad marks on their scorecards were nowhere to be found in that place of torment?

And here’s one more fly in the ointment. What if you found out people with only one GOOD mark on their scorecards would never have to enter that place of torment? Talk about unfair!

So, what’s going on here? Why am I talking about all this torment stuff when it wasn’t even the original question?

Because, your reason for being includes only one key ingredient. And you put that ingredient in three places. And it’s summed up like this. Love your Creator. And. Love your neighbor as yourself.

If you can’t do that, then your reason for being
Doesn’t matter, so keep sliding down the road.
But one day you’ll see what others are seeing
And they’ll be free, but you will pay for your load.

Stay tuned,

Bored to death he said under his breath

Are you bored to death?

I can’t say I’ve never been bored to death. Of course, it’s a figure of speech. So naturally it’s never happened to me. Otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this. Because I wouldn’t be writing it. But…back to the point…

Bored to death he said under his breath

While I have breath I won’t be bored to death.

There’s still too darn much to do in life. And I’m a lot closer to the end of this life than the beginning. But that’s sort of what makes the point crystal clear to me.

Have you noticed how many mind-numbing distractions there are in the world today? At least in the parts of the world with easy access to technology. Mobile devices with tons of apps for gaming, movies, music, and more. Big screen TV’s to watch all the latest blockbusters and sports events. And a never-ending supply of “Live” events to attend. At least when that’s allowed again. (if ever)

So, why are there so many people who still get bored?

Little kids who say, “I’m bored,” as they twiddle their thumbs on their little phones and tablets. Workers who say “I’m bored,” as their cubicles and other workspaces fill up with debris. And the list goes on.

But why?

Well, let me lay this out there. And see if it makes any sense to you? Or if you think I’m just working my indoctrination agenda.

I believe humans are bored, even in the middle of amazing sights and sounds, because none of that actually fills them up. None of it has even the slightest chance of satisfying fulfillment. Because none of it lasts. It ALL fades away.

And no matter what your preference for distraction is, somewhere inside you is the realization it’s all gonna be over way too soon.

And that’s SO right.

But what’s a human to do?
What can carry you through?
Is there hope anywhere? And does anyone care?
I could say, if you want me to.

Stay tuned,

Performance enhancing drugs or amygdala hugs

This is better than performance enhancing drugs

When you wanna make your workout even better, skip the performance enhancing drugs. Because they can wreak havoc with your body. And why deal with all those negative side effects when you enjoy the positive side effects of amygdala hugs? That even sounds more funner. Right?

Performance enhancing drugs or amygdala hugs

And, to me, just saying “performance enhancing drugs” sounds dangerous.

But maybe that’s just me. Because there are tons of people who still insist on taking them when they work out. And I hope, for their sakes, they don’t have to deal with life-threatening side effects later on.

“Ok, sure, Tony. But where do I find these so-called amygdala hugs you mentioned?”

Well, I don’t wanna brag (well, maybe I’ll brag a little), but one source is right here on my website.

“Oh man! I knew it! You’re trying to sell me something.”

Oh…now don’t be like that. I have lots and lots of free amygdala hugs. Yeah, I have some you can buy, too. But you don’t have to. So, look around. And if you don’t see what you want, just ask. We’ll be glad to help you find some.

“Ok, now you’re just being elusive, Tony. You haven’t even explained what amygdala hugs are.”

A-ha! That’s pretty important to know. Right?

And I’ll tell you right now, it’s something I made up. But it’s still sort of a real thing. Because the amygdala is the area of your brain that processes emotion. And guess what can surround that area like nothing else. Ok, I won’t make you guess. It’s music. Yeah!. Who knew? (Well, I did, and that’s why I’m sharing it with you.)

Anyway…

Studies that go back as far as 1911 show how music can soak through the amygdala and cerebellum areas of your brain. And, as a result, you can boost your workout, not to mention your mood…although I just did. Then, you might see as much as a 15% increase in endurance and performance. With no negative side effects.

Wow! Is evolution great or what?!

Hardly.

You and I were designed to be able to respond positively to music. And music was invented by someone who loves us way more than we love ourselves. So, amygdala hugs are just another one of the zillions of ways God expresses His love to us. And I hope you listen to some of your favorite music today, enhance your performance, and enjoy some closer connection time with your Creator.

Living a life that is empty of joy
Can be no more than living in pain,
But a life that is filled with music and love
Can be relived again and again.

Praise and worship leader should be a Bible reader

A praise and worship leader should follow THE Leader

Maybe you already know this. But contemporary music, in church, started in the charismatic movement. And now it can be found in just about every kind of modern church in the world. More and more churches, regardless of their theology, seem to prefer praise and worship music that sounds like music of today. So that’s what a typical praise and worship leader tends to serve up each Sunday.

Praise and worship leader should be a Bible reader

Should a praise and worship leader focus on trends?

Now, there’s a lot of evidence that contemporary praise and worship is directly related to the contemporary Christian music industry.  That can be good”and not so good. The Bible says we’re to “not be conformed to this world”. And unfortunately a lot of Christian music (on the radio and in church) has the same look and feel as the rest of the world.

So, praise and worship music is obviously influenced by popular music of the world. But the message in modern worship music should still work to transform the world. And help renew minds to the knowledge of the one, true, living, loving Creator. And most importantly it should be based on strong, Christian theology. Not just feelings.

For example, there’s no shortage of controversy surrounding the lyrical content of a lot of contemporary worship music. The more conservative churches feel the “modern”lyrics are repetitious and lack depth and meaning. And still others say worship services seem more like concert time.

And that connects with this”

These days, contemporary worship time is lead by a “worship leader.” And choir directors are mostly a thing of the past. Typically a worship leader is a musician (often a guitarist or pianist) with passable singing ability and a love for sharing the gospel of Jesus in song.  And many worship leaders also compose some of the worship songs they use for the church.

And that’s where the balancing comes in. With a good combination of classic “church music” and contemporary. Because older members won’t appreciate the absence of deeper, message-filled music. And the younger members tend to get bored if there’s no beat.

Something I worked on when I was the praise and worship leader of a small Denver area church was a “remix” of old standards. And by that I mean I’d take a hymn and give it a solid, contemporary beat. And my personal preference was (and still is) a mix of music that leaves everyone feeling refreshed and exhilerated to serve the Living God.

But it’s essential to present songs for the wide variety of emotions, personalities, and needs of the Body of Christ.

And, of course, what they need isn’t always what they want. So, the musical dilemma continues.

I know it won’t be a problem when we die
And join that praise and worship in the sweet by and by.
But I sure wish we could get along today,
And focus on the message and what the Lord would say.

Day in day out in a world of doubt

Day in day out…here we go again

Looney Tunes. I don’t have to say any more than that. And baby boomers all over America can immediately see their favorite cartoon characters. One of my Dad’s favorites was Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner. It was easy to watch that cartoon and imagine a coyote clocking in to work each morning. And his whole job was to chase the roadrunner. Day in day out. With the same result every time.

Day in day out in a world of doubt

A lot of people go through every day with less hope than Wile E. Coyote.

And too many of those people do something the coyote never did. Give up. Probably because they either don’t have any hope, or they don’t even believe in hope. Either way, it’s tragic.

Because hope is as close as the thoughts in your head.

And how do you suppose you can even store thoughts in your head? Do you truly believe it’s some random collection of ingredients and circumstances that formed your amazing brain? I don’t. And I don’t even know if you’re brilliant or stupid. But I DO know your brain is an incredible work of design. Not a random collection of ones and zeros.

Plus, I know you’ve been given the almost unfathomable gift of your own will. And regardless of your circumstances, you can choose to either believe in the God of love and promise…or trust in your own insufficient self.

I say, go with God.

Even if people think you’re completely looney tunes.

I promise you’ll be glad you did. Because the benefits are heavenly.

He healed the brokenness between us,
And that’s the only health that lasts.
Because He makes sure it’s forever,
And we will never be outcasts.

The love that comes from our Creator
Is love we cannot live without.
But sadly most people reject it,
So filled with doubt day in day out.

Music is for the soul and helps to keep you whole

Music is for the soul

Now, this doesn’t apply to stuff trying to pass itself off as music. Like that heavy beat stuff played inside vehicles and rattles the windows of other vehicles and houses on the street. And that screaming stuff that sounds like spoiled brats throwing temper tantrums. No, only real music is for the soul.

Music is for the soul and helps to keep you whole

And I’m not trying to be the dictator of which music is for the soul.

So don’t worry. If you prefer to crank up your sound system and blast your ears with junk, go for it. But it’s not good for your ears, or for building relationships, or for your soul. And if none of that matters to you, then so be it.

But if you wanna take your life up a notch (or ten), consider stepping outside your little ear-blasting box. Because there’s a whole ‘nother world of magnificent melodies out there. And love-filled lyrics to ease your troubled heart and mind. And whether you believe it or not, it’s crucial to ease your troubled heart and mind.

Because when you choose, instead, to feed your anger, bitterness, and frustration, it will grow like a toxic weed inside your core. And it’ll take you down to the lowest depths of life. And it can even take you to hell.

By the way…hell is not gonna be pleasant. And that’s putting it mildly. Plus, you won’t get to crank your speakers to drown out your misery. And you won’t get to put together a protest with all the other “cool people.” And you’ll discover that being “fired up” takes on a whole new meaning there.

But right now, YOU get to choose.

And you might believe music choice doesn’t matter when it comes to important life decisions. But when it helps keep your heart, mind, and soul in a dark place, it can have eternal consequences. But so what. Right?

Tune in the music and tune out the noise.
Real music builds up. The fake stuff annoys
Not only others, but your heart as well.
Tune in the music, and stay out of hell.

Stay tuned,

Things happen for a reason is like letting a disease in.

So, things happen for a reason, eh?

Why? Seriously. If things happen for a reason, why is that? Why in the world would that always be true? And I ask because I hear or read that sort of nonsense all the time. But why do I say it’s nonsense?

Play

Things happen for a reason is like letting a disease in.

Yeah, if things happen for a reason, why do I oppose that idea?

I mean, c’mon, there must be a reason why I’d say it’s nonsense. So, what’s the reason? And if you can provide a reason, are you sure you’re not just saying something you HAD to say? Because you’d have to say something pre-planned in order for everything to have a reason. Otherwise, there’s no way to know what’s a reason and what’s just a made-up opinion.

It’s all starting to sound ridiculous. Right?

That’s because it IS ridiculous. Because sometimes things happen, and the only reason was…it was an accident. Something that didn’t have to happen. And something that could have been totally avoided with just a little more time, attention to details, or different choices.

But still, so many people insist there’s a reason for everything. And they say silly things like, “It’s all part of God’s plan.”

Really? Because that’s not how God says it is.

And I’m sorry if this offends you, but…when it comes to your truth or God’s truth, I’m going with God. Every. Time.

Take me, for example.

I’ve just gone through two and a half years of a battle with something not functioning properly in my body. And doctors didn’t determine what it was until the past few months. Fortunately, it appears the correct root problem has been figured out. And a surgery has gotten me on the road to recovery.

But what about the people who say things like, “God was working something out as He took you through this.” Or maybe they say, “God knew you could handle this because He doesn’t give us anymore than we can handle.” And they even say, “God needed to get your attention and teach you a lesson.”

On the surface, those might seem like harmless pieces of advice. But they’re actually despicable. Because that’s not how God is working out things. In fact, He doesn’t want ANYBODY to die. Much less be sick. But we all die. And basically everybody gets sick at least a few times in life.

But there IS a reason for death and sickness. And that reason isn’t God micromanaging billions of lives.

The reason is sin. And how it separates us from God and how He designed us perfectly. Our human perfection was traded for a couple of bites of “forbidden fruit” about six or seven thousand years ago. And our genetics have deteriorated ever since. So much so that we no longer live hundreds of years like they used to. In fact, not many people even live to be one hundred years old.

But knowing you have a very short time limit, here on Earth, should motivate you to find out if truth exists. It does. And discover if there’s even absolute Truth you can depend on. And there is.

Or you could choose to take your chances (if that’s even possible since things happen for a reason) and see what happens when you die. I don’t recommend you try that strategy.

But if you do, I’m sure you have a good reason.

Life is full of chance and circumstance.
We don’t know all the steps to this dance.
But I can say, for sure, that I prefer the cure
Offered by the Savior in advance.

Wishing your life away should stop today

Are you wishing your life away and you don’t even know it?

Maybe it wasn’t today. But maybe it was yesterday. And you got up still feeling sleepy. And before you even finished your first cup of sunshine you said “Boy, I’ll be glad when this day is over.” Sound familiar? Because if it does, it’s a form of wishing your life away. Wishing your life away should stop today

There’s something very selfish about wishing your life away, too.

Uh-oh. Now, I done did it. Went ahead and mentioned the “S” word. Selfish.

“Golly, Tony. How come you gotta judge me like that? I just wanted the day to be over so I could be past the crud.”

I know. And I understand how tempting it is to wanna be past the crud in life. Because, after all, who in his or her right mind would enjoy crud? Well, maybe somebody who owns a successful crud cleaning business. But besides that…probably nobody else.

But here’s the problem.

Even if you could skip all the crud, today, that doesn’t mean it’s gone. Because we live in a crud filled world. Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever written the word crud so many times in my whole life. Anyway…this world is broken. And we humans broke it. So, we gotta deal with reality. And that means dealing with the consequences.

And if it’s true that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger (and I’m not so sure that’s always true), then it’s better to brace yourself for the consequences. Instead of wishing your way past them.

So, how do you brace yourself?

Talk to God. He listens when you do.
The Bible says He loves to hear from you.
And He can still be moved. In fact, that truth is proved
When you read His own words through and through.

Brand new day to chase the blues away

Ah, it’s a brand new day

After all my fun talk about how awesome it is to have a balloon sinuplasty surgery, I figured it’s a good time to change the pace. Because it’s a brand new day. And with each new sunrise comes new hope. New horizons. And a fresh new outlook. Right?
[powerpress}

Brand new day to chase the blues away

Every brand new day represents opportunity.

Back when I was a full time live performing musician, I used to sing a song with that title, by Sting. And it included these lyrics:

Why don’t we turn the clock to zero honey.
I’ll sell the stock we’ll spend all the money.
We’re starting up a brand new day.
Turn the clock all the way back.
I wonder if she’ll take me back.
I’m thinking in a brand new way.

Of course, Sting was talking about a relationship. But life, in general, is sort of like that. Each day you have at least a metaphorical opportunity to turn the clock to zero. And to start over. Or where you left off the day before. But with a brand new outlook.

I’m a couple of days past my sinus surgery. And a lot of the pain has subsided. So, I’m able to work through my day with hopeful anticipation. And with the idea that I’m probably gonna get well and be able to work much closer to full capacity again.

There’s something to be said for going through the ring of fire so you can dive into the cool pool. And I know nobody prefers the ring of fire. But that’s what this life serves up.

On a regular basis.

So embrace the challenges you face today.
And remember that you live in grace today.
And your hope and love are in God’s place today.
Let your doubts vanish without a trace today.

Stay tuned,
