Wrath of Khan is merely a yawn

Did you see the Star Trek movie, Wrath of Khan? It was about how Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise had to battle their arch enemy, Khan. Because he planned on using the so-called “life-generating Genesis Device” as a weapon of mass destruction. Huh? Sounds strange. But it was an entertaining movie. And it was a big box office success.

But the so-called “wrath of Khan” was a yawn.

At least when you compare it to real wrath. Wanna know what that looks like?

OK. But first…what’s the definition of wrath? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it like this: “1. strong vengeful anger or indignation – 2. retributory punishment for an offense or a crime : divine chastisement”

Hmm…let’s focus in on that divine chastisement part a little more.

Going back to the dictionary, divine means “relating to, or proceeding directly from God.” And chastisement means “to censure severely : castigate. Oh no, I’ve opened a small container of worms with a couple more words. Right?

OK…censure means “a judgment involving condemnation” and castigate means “to subject to severe punishment, reproof, or criticism.” Alright…now, we’re getting somewhere.

Because the wrath of Khan is merely a yawn when compared to the wrath of God. Wanna see a good example of what I’m talking about? Good. Because that’s my Reason for sharing this.

Read this description and watch the movie in your head as you do…

“…there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.”

Wow. That could almost be a screenplay for a Marvel movie.

Now, check this out…

“And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

Imagine being so afraid that you’d actually prefer the mountains and rocks to fall on you rather than face God. Now, THAT’S wrath.

And it IS gonna come. And it IS gonna be terrible.

For those who hate God.

But for those who love and trust the Creator, there will only be everlasting, fulfilling, joyous love. In a paradise where there’s no more death and dying. So, my recommendation is…

Skip the wrath and choose the path
Of perfect love sent from above.
Choose today, and choose The Way.
Tomorrow might not fill with light
For the soul not on the roll.
So, do not wait till it’s too late.

Type in a word or phrase for instant answers and insights.

Yeah, you can trigger ideas just by typing letters, words, and phrases into your search bar. Because Google (and other search engines) have suggestions for you as you do. It’s pretty cool. And I can say…it can be a powerful tool for writing.

But, like everything else humans get their selfishness wrapped around, it has a dark side.

For example, I read an article about, what appears to be, manipulated results from searches on the subject of election fraud in America. And then there’s social media censorship placed on information from sources whose worldview leans to the right.

But none of this should come as much of a surprise to Christians.

At least, not if you remember what Jesus said about those who hated and persecuted Him.

What makes it so excruciatingly despicable, though, is how many brave and strong Americans gave their valiant efforts, and even their lives, to ensure this country could be a beacon of light. A ray of hope to a world filled with hatred for Jesus.

Generations, in America, grew up knowing they could worship God freely. Knowing they could happily enjoy life and liberty without fear of persecution. And oppressed people from around the world came here seeking that same freedom for themselves and their posterity.

And they found the answer they were looking for.

So, on this 79th National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, I hope you stop and think about those who gave all so that you could have all.

And none of them could have given their lives if Jesus hadn’t given His first. He said, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”

I would love to see hearts changed in the people who control media, tech, politics, and industries. And it would be awesome to witness the difference they could make when they made the decision to love their neighbor. But I suspect they’ll never go there. Because that would take something they’re all missing.

Humility.

But don’t lose hope. One day they will experience humility. And even though we might not see it here, we will see the vengeance.

From the brisk, blue breeze came a static spark,
Like a lantern light in the deepest dark.
And a single soul shared a right remark…
Without wisdom quest is a question mark.

Drift away or stay forever and a day

Dobie Gray sang “Drift Away.” And it was a big hit for him back in 1973. I remember I liked the song, a lot, from the very first time I heard it. And I think it was Conway Twitty who did a country version of the song. But I disliked that one from the very first time I heard it. Sorry, but his voice and style go against the grain of my musical taste.

Anyway…Drift Away

Yeah, that song sold over a million copies for Dobie Gray. And to this day I get a ’73 nostalgic feel when I hear it…which isn’t often.

As it turns out, Dobie Gray died on this day, December 6th, back in 2011. Apparently there were complications after he went through cancer surgery. I read an article about him that said he “discovered Gospel music through his grandfather, a Baptist minister.” So, I hope Mr. Gray was able to drift away into Heaven.

But, if you’ve tuned in to my writings and recording for a while, you know I don’t typically bring up a story like this without tying it to eternal principles. Right? And that’s true this time, too.

Because in the past couple of years, especially, I’ve read about or heard about more and more Christians drifting away from God. And while that’s a disturbing trend, it doesn’t come as a surprise. Because Paul wrote about it in his first letter to his protégé, Timothy.

He said it like this, “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron…”

Yikes. That’s a serious drift.

The subhead, in the New King James version of the Bible, calls it “The Great Apostasy.” And the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines apostasy as “an act of refusing to continue to follow, obey, or recognize a religious faith.”

Yeah, when you “give heed to…doctrines of demons” and have no problem “speaking lies in hypocrisy,” you’ve made it an act of your will to rebel against God.

But that won’t go well for you.

And you’re liable to start feeling like the words in Dobie Gray’s song…

Day after day I’m more confused
Yet I look for the light in the pouring rain
You know that’s a game that I hate to lose
I’m feelin’ the strain, ain’t it a shame

Amazing Grace on the Billboard charts

Yesterday I mentioned a song written by Pete Seeger that was based on words from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible. And I remember thinking how unusual that was. And how it would be even more unusual these days. Unless, of course, the songwriter or band is mocking God. But  another unusual song for the Billboard charts was Amazing Grace. Yeah, that one.

Judy Collins recorded Amazing Grace back in 1970.

And according to stats, the song was on the UK singles chart eight different times. Just in case you’re into Biblical numerology…8 is the number of completion.

Anyway…

Judy’s version never reached Number 1. But the song was still on the charts for 67 weeks. And that’s pretty amazing (pun only slightly intended) when you consider the songwriter, John Newton, wrote it way back in 1779.

Here’s Judy’s version of the song…

I think it’s pretty cool a Christian hymn could spend so much time on secular music charts. Because it’s a least a small opportunity for someone who doesn’t believe and trust in Jesus to at least contemplate what’s so amazing about grace.

But, of course, as you know, this isn’t just any ol’ run-of-the-mill grace we’re talking about. Hardly. Because the way this Grace was offered happened only one time in the history of the world. And one time is enough for all time.

But pardon my manners. Maybe you’re reading (or listening) to these words, and you actually don’t know about this specific, unique Grace.

If that’s the case, I suggest you get busy finding out. Because time’s running out for grabbing all the benefits of this special Grace. And I promise, if you grab on right now, you won’t ever regret it. And when I say “ever,” I mean the eternal kind of ever.

And if you’re asking, “What’s in it for me?”
Well, give up your soul and I think you will see….
Eternity…eternity…eternity…

To everything there is a season - even the tough stuff

To everything there is a season. And apparently there was even a time for a songwriter to get inspiration for a song from the Bible. And a time for that song to be played on the radio.

But the songwriter turned the words and the message into lyrics.

And it didn’t work, for the rhythm and melody, to just say “To everything there is season.” So, a hook was added. With the same word “Turn” repeated three times. And since the hook played such a significant role in the song it only made sense to make that the title of the song.

Turn Turn Turn

The song was written by Pete Seeger, a folk singer, who first recorded it in 1959. But that recording wasn’t a hit. Well, maybe Pete’s fans and family loved it. But it didn’t become a bona fide hit until 1965. And that’s when Pete left it to the birds.

No wait. Make that The Byrds. And it was December 4, 1965 when the song went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Hey, what a coincidence! This is December 4th, too. (wry grin from me as the crowds roll their eyes)

According to the research I did, the song topped the chart for three weeks. And that’s pretty cool since it’s the number for God…just in case you’re interested in Biblical numerology.

Now, here’s what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna share the lyrics…well, actually the inspiration words for the song. And I’d like you to pay close attention. Because, remember, these words were written by King Solomon and inspired by God. And some of it isn’t about peace, love, and joy.

To everything there is a season

And there’s a time for every purpose under heaven.
A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;
A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;

December 3rd a little bird gave me this word

December 3rd has been the date for some pretty interesting and cool things, through the years, in the world of popular music. It must be the weather. Not quite winter. But not quite fall.

And here’s a short list of some of those December 3rd moments.

First, an obscure rock-n-roll singer released his first song(s) on his new record label, RCA Victor. His name was Elvis Presley, and this was way back in 1955.

Then, ten years later, on the 3rd of December, Keith Richards (from the Rolling Stones) found out what happens when you use yourself and your guitar to close an open electrical circuit. Apparently he was knocked out. And I think he’s been playing that way ever since.

Exactly one year later, Ray Charles (say it ain’t so, Ray) was convicted of possession of heroin and marijuana. And they fined him $10,000 and added a 5 year suspended prison sentence. Fortunately that day didn’t define Ray’s whole life.

But wait…there’s more. Want me to go on?

What’s that you say? “When pigs fly, Tony.”

OK, no problem. Because on this day, in 1976, a giant pig named Algie was photographed flying above London, England. OK, so it was an inflatable pig being used for the upcoming album, Animals, by Pink Floyd. But I had you going for a minute, right?

Of course some sad passings happened on this day, too. For example…you probably never heard of Hoyt Curtin, who died on December 3, 2000. But if you grew up watching 60’s and 70’s cartoons, you heard his work. Because he composed the theme songs for The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Top Cat, Josie and the Pussycats, and even the newer Scooby-Doo movies.

And another guy you never heard of but heard was Grady Martin. He played guitar on Oh Pretty Woman, by Roy Orbison. And he played guitar on El Paso, by Marty Robbins…and on Coal Miner’s Daughter by Loretta Lynn. So, yeah, not exactly minor hits.

But this list wouldn’t be complete without adding some famous birthdays. Right? Did you know Andy Williams and Ozzie Osbourne were born on the third day of December? Or how about Mickey Thomas who sang the lead vocals on Jefferson Starship’s hit “Nothin’s Gonna Stop Us?”

And I’ll leave you with these last three birthdays. Do you remember Kimberly Rew? No? Well, how about her band, Katrina and the Waves, and their hit song, “I’m Walkin’ On Sunshine?”

And the last two include one of the founding members of the band, 38 Special. His name is Don Barnes. And to finish up the famous birthdays on December three…there’s me.

Performance for Sara from another era

It was July of 1975. And I was a fairly new piano player. Because I had started teaching myself the way around the keys about a year and a half before. So, as the scales and chord combinations started to make sense I naturally wanted to put some of my large catalogue of lyrics to music. And one of those songs was Performance for Sara.

I gotta say…Performance for Sara was epic!

And that’s just because I wanted an epic composition. Not because there was an actual Sara. In fact, I never had a girlfriend with that name. I just always liked it. And it seemed to fit the mood of the music I composed.

So, this wasn’t just a song. It was music to go with the movie in my head. And, as I look back on it now, I see so much I’d do differently now. But that’s a good thing. Because it means I’ve learned a lot since then. And I’ve gotten much better at my craft.

I don’t have a recording of it. And I don’t have all the instrumentation in my head anymore either. Because it’s been over three decades since I last sang it. But I can hear the melody in my head. And I can still bring that up for my own nostalgic pleasure…if and when I want.

But for anybody else who’s interested, I can only share the words. And a picture of my original hand printed lyrics…which are even dated. Here you go…

December, remember, is for life's glowing ember

Well, it’s December 2020. And it’s the best month of the year to end 2020 with. And not just because it’s both national egg nog month AND national impaired driving prevention month. Even that alone would make it super duper unique. But also because of its historical significance.

December is full of important days.

Like today, the first day of the month. This is Eat A Red Apple Day. And since an apple a day keeps the doctor away, there’s more importance to this day than ever before. Right?

And there are other important food days this month, too. Like tomorrow. One of my faves. It’s National Fritters Day. So take some of that red apple from today, add some walnuts, and make some apple fritters for tomorrow. Be prepared. And don’t let it sneak up on you.

But how about National Cookie Day on the 4th? My #1 fave. And there’s no specific cookie. So, it doesn’t matter what your choice is. Celebrate the day with a cookie made your way.

Oh yeah…the 9th is National Pastry Day. And that’s almost as important as Cookie Day. Because who isn’t obsessing over tasty sweets this month? C’mon…admit it. You’ve already Googled recipes, haven’t you?

And to prove my point just a bit further, the 15th is National Cupcake Day. Now, don’t even try to tell me you can resist celebrating that day. I’ll bet you’ve already got ingredients in the cupboard. Or you’ve got your favorite bakery on speed dial. (It’ll be our little secret)

But there’s even more important significance to this month than food.

Like, the two most historically significant birthdays in history are both in this month. I’ll talk more about those later. But for now, just realize, you’ve entered THE month of all months. A time when the world sees both the shortest and longest daylight days of the year.

It’s the month of Sagittarius (until the 21st) and Capricorn (the rest of the month). And the month of the Narcissus flower and the stones of tanzanite, turquoise, and zircon.

So, I hope this December finds you happy
And as healthy as you’ve earned the right to be.
I hope it helps you start your new year snappy
Fueled by blessings that you can and cannot see.

Salt and light trumps might makes right

I read a headline, somewhere online today, that said Wikipedia has become another leftist so-called “source of information.” What?! I’m totally aghast. And in mind-blown shock. Not. And then, as fate, destiny, and kismet would have it, I saw a Wikipedia article on the old saying, “Might makes right.” And what a lot of hooey. So, allow me to shed some salt and light on it.

Salt and light trumps might makes right.

First, the Wikipedia article said the phrase is “an aphorism on the origin of morality, with both descriptive and prescriptive senses.”

So, you’re all clear on it now. Right?

Then, the article said that “might makes right” is a claim of how “a society’s view of right and wrong is determined by those in power.” And it followed that up with the example of an often used quote, “History is written by the victors”.

And that shows me the writer or writers haven’t read the Bible. Or if they have, they don’t care how those assertions just don’t hold water. But, no surprise there.

Then, the Wikipedia article added a silly notion to their description. And it reveals a lack of wisdom, understanding, and science. Because it said, “The phrase sometimes has a positive connotation in the context of master morality or social Darwinism…”

Yeah. As if social Darwinism or any other form of Darwinism has any positive connotations. And apparently that “master morality” or “social Darwinism” says that…

“a society’s strongest members should rule and determine its standards of right and wrong, as well as its goals for the greater good.”

Now, let’s shed a little light on that idea.

Who gets to determine who “society’s strongest members” are? And when they rule, how do they determine those “standards of right and wrong?” Because who’s to say what’s right for you is right for me? Don’t they know we’re all right in our own minds.

But what about this? Let’s say there’s a way we could all know what’s right and what’s wrong. I know it sounds like crazy talk, but bear with me a minute.

And let’s say that since everyone could know what’s right or wrong we could call it something like a…hmm…universal standard. Are you still with me?

Now, let’s say that universal standard is verifiable. In other words, each time it’s tested it proves to be true and trustworthy. Wouldn’t that be pretty cool?

And let’s go another step and say the universal standard even has a built-in punishment and reward system. And even THAT proves to be trustworthy because it gets desired results every single time. Now we’re firin’ on all cylinders.

But here’s the best benefit.

Crime goes down. And quality of life goes up. For everybody. And it’s not because some manipulated majority voted on it. And it equally protects every demographic. Not just “society’s strongest members.”

Guess what? This universal standard already exists. But most people in the world reject it. Even though they’d benefit in ways that can’t even imagine.

And the universal standard is your Creator. Yes, God.

OK…now you’re probably gonna drop out. Because most people do when they hear the word God. Or even worse…Jesus. Those names represent only judgment and condemnation. Which God did set in place. But He did that out of His love. Love for those who choose to love Him.

And for those who love Him, there is NO condemnation. There is eternal life in paradise.

But if you don’t want any of that, you won’t be forced to take it. Because God will respect your decision to be away from Him forever. I don’t recommend that decision. You’ll be sorry and angry about it forever.

But maybe my salt and light aren’t real.
Maybe it’s just the way I feel.
Maybe it won’t be your circumstance.

Forgive everyone for everything and you won’t be like God.

Because, just in case you’ve read the Bible and somehow believe God forgives everyone, here’s news hot off the analog and digital presses.

God does not forgive everyone.

And since He doesn’t do that, it’s a sure thing you shouldn’t either.

But according to more and more so-called “ordained ministers” forgiveness is the be all end all. I even saw an Amazon book description about a book on forgiveness by one of those “ministers” with that sort of nonsense. Here’s what the author said…

“Only forgiveness can liberate minds and hearts once held captive by anger, bitterness, resentment, and fear. Forgiveness is a true path to freedom that can renew faith, build trust, and nourish the soul.”

Bunk. And balderdash.

And I wish I could say the author means well. But I’m pretty sure she doesn’t know what that would truly require.

Because true forgiveness, the kind found in the Bible, requires repentance. And it’s crucial to understand…most people don’t repent. And most don’t ask God for His forgiveness.

And so, God doesn’t forgive most people.

To the average Sunday-go-to-meetin’ Christian, that probably sounds like blasphemy.

And most of those people would probab ly want to kick Jesus out if He dared to visit their church and speak His mind.

Here’s the thing.

When you decide you’re gonna forgive everyone for everything, you thumb your nose at God. You’re saying your view on the matter supersedes or overrides His authority. And you’re telling Him how little you care about what His word says.

You can do that if you want. And you can write bestselling books. Be interviewed on Oprah. And mingle with the literary elite. But I hope you’ll be comfortable with how many people go to hell because of your lies.

If what I’m saying, on this subject, isn’t so,
Then you should show me where I’m wrong. I need to know.
But if I’m right about it, you should change your mind
And leave false thoughts about forgiveness far behind.

Be nice to nurses or find out what worse is

I’ve always believed it’s a good idea to be nice to nurses. And doctors and other medical practitioners. Because they have to see and deal with a lot of the ugly side of life. And death.

But especially be nice to nurses.

Just imagine having the job of caring for people who moan and groan. And complain and gripe. Sometimes it’s an 8 hour day. But other times the work days can be much longer.

And nursing is a job that includes recording medical history and symptoms. Nurses also have to collaborate with a team to come up with a patient care plan. Plus, they speak up for patients who have a hard time expressing their issues to doctors.

Then, they have to keep an eye on patients’ progress. And record any changes. Oh yeah, can’t forget how nurses have to manage meds and treatments. And operate medical equipment.

They even have to run diagnostic tests. And explain to patients what they’ll need to do to manage illness and get better. And that includes knowing how to support and advise.

So, you can see why it’s important to be nice. Right?

But here’s another point of equal importance.

Nurses need to be nice to patients.

Because, in spite of what you see and deal with all day, each patient is dealing with a unique set of circumstances. You don’t know what pain they might be experiencing that won’t register on any of your medical equipment.

And each person you tend to is another opportunity to show how much you love your neighbor as yourself. In other words, if you wouldn’t want something done to you, don’t do it to others.

The reason I bring it up is because my mom just experienced what appears to have been a stroke incident. And she’s currently in the hospital near her home in Kansas.

But my mom doesn’t tend to follow my be nice advice.

In fact, she can be a little hard-headed when it comes to doctors and nurses and hospitals. And since this stroke incident didn’t appear to cause any serious visible problems, she still has plenty of “attitude” about being at the mercy of her health providers.

And when I say “a little hard-headed,” I’m practicing my understatement skills.

So, when I call to check in on her, I hear a lot of less than flattering talk about her jailers. And a lot of “I gotta get outta here” talk.

Plus, knowing that her family can’t even come inside to visit her adds insult to injury. And, on that part of it, I’m in total agreement.

But it’s not the nurses’ fault. Or the doctors’. But it will be at least partially their fault if they allow this “pandemic” to become the so-called “new norm” with no regard for mounting evidence. If they don’t start standing up for liberty and truth, then they’re part of the problem.

And then it’s time to not be so nice.

And then, mom will be ahead of the curve.

Be nice…be nice…
Be willing to pay the price
Be nice…be nice…
It’s really not so hard to just be nice.

Black Friday deals on a day brought to you by the Way

So-called Black Friday deals are popping up in online advertisements everywhere. And if you still watch “regular” TV (we don’t here in the FunderBungalow), you’re probably seeing tons of them, too. And there is so much subtle and blatant hypocrisy involved, it boggles the mind.

Black Friday deals are distractions.

And, by the way, there is only one good reason why this day exists. But the vast majority of people either don’t know what that reason is…or they couldn’t care less.

I’ve never done the numbers, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if someone could show how much better deals can be found on plenty of other days of the year. Maybe my friend, Greg, who’s a deal-finding pro, could shed some light on it. Hmm…I’ll have to ask him.

Anyway…

Why did I mention “distractions?” Because when you consider what a mess America is in (the rest of the world, too), I believe looking for Christmas gift “deals” is at least a little silly. Especially in these tyrannical times when you’re supposed to “social distance” yourself even from your friends and relatives.

But what’s even worse is how the yearly feeding frenzy for bargains has always distracted from the real reason this day exists. And if you think the reason is the Hallmark version of Christmas, you missed the point.

Because that version of Christmas puts the focus on human experience.

And that removes the focus from why Christmas even exists.

The only reason Christmas exists is because your Creator was willing to become a human being. And even more than that, He was willing to live a sinless life and suffer through the most horrific Black Friday.

But that’s not even on the radar of many, if not most, business owners. Because they either don’t care or truly never knew. I’d say most don’t care. As long as buyers gobble up their “deals” and put them in the black.

But one day there won’t be a Black Friday for anyone. And then it’ll be too late to find out how it all got started. And why. So, my recommendation is to look into it now. While there’s still time. Ignore my advice at your peril.

Christmas is the one day when God became a man,
When peace on earth began…and ended so fast.
But Christmas is the one day when hope can rise again
Inside the hearts of men. So why can’t we make it last?

Thanksgiving turkey protest to help the bird-brained oppressed

If Thanksgiving turkey wasn’t such a normal part of this holiday every year, just think how many turkeys would never have even been born…uh…hatched. But tell that to the living turkeys and see if it makes them more thankful. My guess is…

No Thanksgiving turkey gives it a second thought either way.

And that’s because those birds don’t tend to have logic and reason. And by “don’t tend to have” I mean don’t have.

Because if they did, they’d use some logic to figure out why Americans are so fixated on them as a companion dish to dressing and giblet gravy.

And maybe they’d come up with some arguments against the so-called sensible reasons for eating them instead of other birds or animals. Maybe they could point out some other bird that’s large enough to feed a table full of hungry Americans.

Or maybe they could show us humans how they serve some other practical purpose. Like chickens and cows do with eggs and milk.

But I think those odd birds should figure out a way to communicate. And maybe they could do that with their snood and wattle. No, those aren’t made-up words out of a Dr. Seuss book. Snoods and wattles are the odd looking flaps of skin on their heads. And as it turns out, they can change color. For mating, moods, and even health reasons.

So, my suggestion to these domesticated food…uh…birds…is to get out their call. Send a message to the gorging Americans how all those other bird and animal sources are just as delicious, filling, and renewable. No need to focus on them.

This approach worked well for the Chick-fil-A cows.

Have you seen the lines for those chicken sandwiches? Crazy.

OK, turkeys of America…my household supports your cause. We’re having delicious ribeye steaks and sweet potatoes with our pumpkin pie. And, as another sign of solidarity, we will boycott every Chick-fil-A within driving distance. All day today, and every Sunday for as long as needed.

Now…don’t get me started on cranberry sauce. No, seriously. Don’t get me started.

And…uh, wait…

“Hey babe! Is that a cow with a sign walking by out front?!”

Liberty and justice not simply for just us.

Liberty and justice for all. Remember those words? Yeah, they seem vaguely familiar. Oh yeah, I remember now. Aren’t they the last words in the American Pledge of Allegiance. But who is this “ALL” they’re talking about?

Liberty and justice for all means everybody.

Not just the people who can speak the pledge. But even people who can’t speak. Or hear. Or see. And even for people who were conceived one second ago. Yes! Those people, too.

Because all doesn’t mean only the people you can hear. Or see. Or tolerate.

All means all.

With exceptions.

Uh-oh. There I go again with that juxtaposed jargon. But hear me out (or read me out). The exceptions are people who should relinquish their liberty because they usurp or even destroy the liberty of others. And that’s when justice should prevail. Both for the victim AND against the perpetrator. Otherwise the justice system is just a system.

But you might be wondering why I’m talking about this on the eve of Thanksgiving Day. And if you ARE wondering that, I wonder if you’ve seen all the nonsense about social distancing from your own family tomorrow.

And the only reason I call it nonsense is because…

IT IS.

Don’t believe, for a moment, the control freaks in government believe there’s any real danger in getting together for Thanksgiving. And a perfect example can be found right here in my home state of Colorado.

The so-called mayor Hancock, of Denver, sent out a clever, little message on Twitter that included said, “Pass the potatoes, not COVID.” And then he included some bullet points…

  • Stay home as much as you can, especially if you’re sick.
  • Host virtual gatherings instead of in-person dinners.
  • Avoid travel, if you can.
  • Order your holiday meal from a local eatery.  (He couldn’t say Thanksgiving)
  • Shop online with a small business for #BlackFriday

So, he couldn’t bring himself to say Thanksgiving. But he does want you to spend money on Friday. Because a lot of those goods and services are taxed (and by “a lot” I mean ALL, again). And politicians love taxes. Because without ’em it’s so difficult to spend other people’s money.

Oh…and by the way…after Mayor Hanpocrisy sent out that message, he caught a flight to Mississippi to be with his family for the “holiday.”

But…back to liberty and justice.

Tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day 2020, should be just like every other Thanksgiving Day you’ve ever enjoyed in your whole life. Exercise your liberty. And give thanks to the one, true, living, loving Creator of Heaven and Earth. The One who is the only reason you and I and everyone else even exist.

And when you exercise your liberty, your right to assemble and worship and give thanks, you’re serving justice to all those who are too brain dead to appreciate their own liberty.

Remember, your rights come from God.
And not from some players in suits
Who gleefully sell out their souls
For fleeting and false attributes.
Look up when the whole world looks down,
And never let hope fade away.
Be close with the ones you love most
Especially on Thanksgiving Day.

Give me liberty here in this land I hold dear

My eloquence is subdued, tainted, and watered down by the second law of thermodynamics and a public school education. But I take heart in knowing that so is yours. Just kidding (a bit). But it’s true that we’re generally all less hearty and amazing human specimens than our ancestors. And I bring this up because, this morning, I’ve been thinking about the “Give me liberty” speech by Patrick Henry.

Patrick Henry is famous for saying “Give me liberty or give me death.”

And he spoke those words in a “fiery speech” to the Second Virginia Convention in 1775. I like this section of his speech where he said…

“This is no time for ceremony. The question before the House is one of awful moment to this country. For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery…”

Wow. If only there were someone in the House of Representatives or Senate who had the courage to speak that way these days. Because America has arrived at another “awful moment” which will define our character. Or lack of it.

Mr. Henry continued his speech with…

“It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country.”

Obviously he was a great orator. But apparently he forgot about the separation of church and state. (Yeah, right.)

And then the right honorable Mr. Henry added one of my favorite lines…

“Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.”

Now THAT’S getting your priorities right!

You can read the whole, famous Patrick Henry speech here. But here’s the section that contains the most famous line, which appears to allude to 1 Thessalonians 5, in the Bible…

“It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace “” but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”

Paul Revere made a ride to help some guys be safe and hide

For some, the name Paul Revere might conjure up a band from back in the 60’s and 70’s. But it should bring to mind a great American and his famous “midnight ride.”

Paul Revere’s famous ride started at 10 p.m.

And he didn’t actually ride alone. But those are minor details when it comes to spotlighting a true patriot. Because when you consider how the British had already killed unarmed colonists, you see how dangerous Paul’s actions were.

He was part of the growing group of residents in “the colonies” who were tired of British tyranny. And they decided it was time for civil disobedience and eventually…rebellion. Because when a tyrannical government goes so far as to kill (or allowed its subjects/citizens to be killed), it’s time to disobey.

And that time has come to America again.

A group of patriots, calling themselves “We Are Paul Revere” have come up with five steps for what they call “How To Disobey.”

  1. Commit to a maskless life.
  2. Commit to social gathering
  3. And commit to working if you’re well.
  4. Prepare to be confronted.
  5. Be ready with an answer.

And they say, “If everyone disobeys, the shutdowns will be over. We are MILLIONS strong. They can’t stop us all.”

If and when you make this kind of commitment to disobey, you’ll probably feel at least a little of the danger Mr. Revere felt all those years ago. But think about this. When tyranny comes, and it’s already here, would you rather be an unarmed, misinformed victim? Or an apprehensive, yet confident, citizen armed with the truth?

Listen, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five:
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.

He said to his friend, “If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry-arch
Of the North-Church-tower, as a signal-light,
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country-folk to be up and to arm.”

Data loss prevention and user intervention

Get Outta Bed. Busy Day. Dinnertime. Your Own Song. Birthday Dance. And Dreamtown. Those are all songs that went out to thousands of kids and families. All over America. And even in several other parts of the world. For 20 years I’ve sold that personalized music for kids. But due to some data loss prevention, they’re gone. Maybe forever.

The data loss prevention was messed up by some user intervention.

And I’m not tossing out anything to mess with anybody’s reputation. But I know exactly who messed up. And I know he feels bad about it. So, maybe that’s punishment enough. After all, no amount of yelling, screaming, or threatening will bring back the files. Right?

I suppose it’s another one of those awful “lesson learned” moments. And the lesson, in this case, is…just because you have something “backed up in the cloud” doesn’t mean it’s impervious to human error. And loss.

So, going forward from here, I won’t be selling any more personalized music for kids. No downloads. No CD’s. And no streaming. Because the files have gone to digital heaven. And until (or unless) I…or someone…can find a way to dig up deeply buried versions, that’s it.

But to the thousands of kids and families who’ve bought CD’s and downloads from me over the years…thank you. From the bottom of my heart. And the depths of my soul.

And…

You’ve sent me so many nice comments and testimonials. And I never got tired of hearing how the little kids’ faces lit up when they heard their name sung in the songs. Some of you even sent me videos of your kids dancing. Very cool.

Now, I guess kids will have to get outta bed, get through their busy days, eat their dinner, dance their birthday dance, and go to sleep without me singing to them personally.

But I bet you guys will manage.

Or…here’s an idea. I could re-record the songs to make them universal. Hey, maybe that’s the solution. They wouldn’t be personalized because that would take too much time now. But maybe kids would love ’em anyway.

Eh…just an idea.

Spirograph art and how do galaxies start

I’ve seen it described as “a geometric drawing device that produces mathematical roulette curves of the variety technically known as hypotrochoids and epitrochoids.” And since that sounds too simple for most people, maybe you’d prefer the description in their commercials from back in the 60’s. “Make a million multicolor designs so beautiful your eyes won’t believe what your hands have done.” What is it? Spirograph art from the amazing Spirograph by Kenner.

Spirograph art had me hooked from the start.

I remember watching their commercial with kids using the precise plastic wheels and a pen to make intricate geometric and swirling designs. And it was so cool to see how easy it was. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and start creating my own masterpieces.

And, as it turns out, the Spirograph toy was re-launched back in 2013 and was a toy of the year finalist in 2014. So, I guess other kids from other generations have found it as fascinating as I did.

But, you know me. I didn’t take the time to fire up my blog to talk about a toy from the 60’s. Yeah, you’re on to me. So, I’ll come clean (Dictionary definition: be completely honest; keep nothing hidden). And I’ll tell why I mentioned the Spirograph toy.

Because the word “spirograph” reminded me of spirals. And spirals actually help disprove the silly notion of galactic (and all other) evolution.

Did you know there are galaxies known as spiral galaxies?

And did you know they couldn’t be billions of years old? Because if they were, they would be all bent out of shape. But they’re not all bent out of shape. In fact, their shape implies they must have been formed by supernatural processes.

Now, I’m not saying God Himself created the spiral galaxies. No, wait a minute. That’s exactly what I’m saying. Because I’m not afraid to state the obvious. But, of course, it won’t be obvious to anyone who WILL not see. And that’s because those people don’t want there to be a creator God…or spiral galaxies that obviously didn’t evolve.

Feel free to disagree with my hypothesis. But you should know, you’ll also be disagreeing with a guy who received his “Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow.”

And lots of other scientists, too.

If you’re OK with that, then skip away to your next delusion party. No hard feelings.

OK, I’ll stop with the musical puns. But it’s amazing how many of the best known Motown hits were written by that songwriting trio. 25 number 1 hits. Wow. Not many can say that.

And that brings me to why I’m bringing it up today. Because The Supremes recorded a song by Dozier and the Holland brothers called “I Hear A Symphony.” And on this day (November 20), back in 1965, it went to number 1 on the U.S. charts. Coincidentally, they had another number 1 hit with “You Keep Me Hangin On” exactly a year later.

Gettysburg Address did not assure success

Today marks the 157th anniversary of a speech President Lincoln gave. So, I’m gonna share that whole Gettysburg Address with you with only a couple of comments.

Gettsysburg Address was short.

And Lincoln was tall.

Ok. So much for my couple of comments. (rimshot) But seriously. Honest Abe was able to sum up a whole lot of feeling and meaning in only 271 words. And I read that it only took him about 2 minutes to deliver his speech. And that was good. Because the dedication “oration” that came before the President’s speech took two hours. Yikes.

Sadly, though, Mr. Lincoln’s last line hasn’t proved to be true. And, in a way, that’s appropriate. Because a government that rests its security on “the people” will ultimately perish from the earth. Because most of “the people” are confused at best…and evil at worst.

So, “the people” will tend to destroy and vote away their own freedoms.

But one day, there will be a just government in this world. And it’ll be set in place and controlled by the only one who could ever be trusted to be fair and just. And “the people” will either love it or hate it. But they will most definitely not get to vote for it.

Crazy talk, I know. But I predict it will happen.

Till then, our one last chance still has a spark of hope.

If only “the people” would live up to Lincoln’s vision…

The Gettysburg Address

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow, this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion, that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
