CS Lewis quote sure does float my boat

Here’s one of my favorite CS Lewis quotes: “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

And I think it ties in nicely with this CS Lewis quote:

“One of the most cowardly things ordinary people do is to shut their eyes to facts.”

Back in 1996 I had never heard of either one of those quotes when I wrote to the lyrics you’ll see below. But I think my compulsion was similar to Mr. Lewis’. And for similar reasons. I’ll just leave you with the lyrics, and you be the judge.

Have To Believe

I can hear my heart, but I just can’t feel my life.
I can feel You cut, but I just can’t see the knife.
You slip Yourself inside of me
To show me what I’m meant to be;
Unlock me with Your golden key;
Protect me from the wizardry
Of this world far below.

I can feel Your love; though I never see Your face,
And whenever I’m alone, You still fill the empty space.
I never have to reach for You.
You always seem to pull me through.
You do the things that I can’t do;
Not even if I wanted to…not even if I tried.

And I have to believe…You did everything for me.
‘Cause what I have to believe…is the truth that sets me free (repeat)

You must know my dreams
Because you’re making them all come true.
I know that You’re the One
Because no one could but You.
Your steady hand is always near.
With perfect love You conquer fear.
You brush away the dark veneer,
And suddenly it’s all so clear which way I should go.
(repeat chorus)

Well, I’m not sure if l deserve it.
I’m lighter than air and soaring like a bird,

And if l can love You any better,
Just say the Word! © 1995

No one here is good enough or made of the right stuff

Ultimately, no one here, on this snazzy little blue planet, is the boss of me. Because I know who created this planet, all the other planets, the entire solar system, all the other solar systems, and the whole universe.

And no one here did that.

Sure, the One who DID create it all has been here on the planet. But he left for a while  And that person IS the ultimate boss of me. But you’ll never find a better boss. Because you’ll never find anyone else who will love you into, and through, eternity. Matter of fact, you’ll never find anyone else who COULD do that, much less would.

Yes, I’m talking about God. And to clear it up even more, I’m talking about Jesus. The one whose image you and I were made in. Way back, in the beginning, He spoke words, and this whole world appeared. Then He spoke some more words and all the animals, birds, fish, and reptiles appeared. But there were still no one, and nothing, here that looked like a man or a woman.

So, God created a man first. And He finished up His work of creation by creating a woman. And those two people were made in His image. And because all this is true, you and I can know who is ultimately in charge of everything.

So, it only stands to reason that the one who created us should be the one who makes the rules. Because He knows what’s best for us and how every tiny detail of our bodies function best. And God is all about abundant life, eternal life. And His rules are in place to be sure you and I have that eternal life.

Yeah, anything that comes from man-made committees and systems will either acknowledge that information or fail. That’s why I think it’s so sad to see our government officials working full-time to “make” so-called laws. Because…

Rights Come From God

Rights don’t come from government.
They only come from God.
Man’s words might acknowledge this,
But they can be outlawed.
No one here is sovereign.
And no one here is good.
And nations will disintegrate
Until that’s understood.
Truth will not prevail upon
The ones who choose to hate
The One who is the Truth, the Life,
The Way, and narrow Gate.
“Freedom isn’t free,” they say.
And you won’t disagree,
When you find out what it took
To bring you liberty.
The man-made “constitution,”
Amended to add rights,
Barely reflects the message
From the Father of lights.
He said perfect life awaits
For “who believes in Me.”
Choose God over government.
His Truth shall make you free. © 2023

Everything from nothing is silly and not believable, really

I’ve seen everything. And nothing is a waste of time. Yep. I said it. And I stand by it. So, I’ll say it again.

Nothing is a waste of time.

Because nothing is nothing.

(This next part is something I shared a few years back. But it bears repeating.)

~ The reason I bring this up is because of a senseless meme I saw on social media. It posed the question, “If God made everything from nothing, where did He get nothing?”

Seriously?

Yeah, even people who consider themselves to be thinkers and intellectuals show themselves for the fools they are when they try to define nothing. Like famous atheist, Richard Dawkins.

Here’s the link to watch this fool in action: https://youtu.be/dWyN7Jlulo8

So, now you see why I say nothing is a waste of time. Right?

And the complexity of our world and our universe can’t be explained by everything coming from nothing. In fact, the complexity of your own thoughts proves there is a loving Creator. Unless you avoid the Truth like a plague.

For example, here’s something I wrote, several years ago, about ideas.

“Ideas aren’t some random results of random processing of random information. Ideas are thoughts formulated into an intelligent mental picture as a result of processing logical, reasonable information. But how did all that information get from one source…say your Bible app…into your brain? The answer is simple. But it befuddles (and even angers) most of the so-called “thinkers” of the world.

Your ideas get into your brain by processing and pondering the information you discover using a system designed by…

God.

That system is called logic and reason. Your brain is the user interface. You might call it the the most powerful UI ever designed. And make no mistake…it IS design. Not random chance.

It’s uncanny and ironic, to me, how many times I hear the same information bandied around saying the world, and everything in it, came from nothing. At best, that’s a scientific theory. An idea. Yet, that idea can’t explain how ideas are stored. That idea can’t explain logic and reason. That so-called “scientific theory” leads to mankind believing mankind is either the pinnacle of evolution or just another insignificant segment of it.”

And nothing could be further from the Truth. It’s crucial to know this sooner than later, because…

Everything From Nothing

Everything from nothing
Is just silliness, squared.
No man-based philosophy
Holds up when it’s compared
To all the love, forgiveness,
And eternal life you get
When you accept your Savior’s love
And leave this short vignette.    © 2021

Emerald northern lights or just some preview sights

A social media friend of mine who shares photographs, by her and other skilled photographers, posted a picture that captured the emerald northern lights. And she called it. Emerald Embrace. The picture, and her title, inspired me to write a rhyme using one of my faves.

Alliteration? Absolutely.

In this case, I focused on alliteration in only one line and in the title. Not in every line, the way I generally like to work it out. There’s no deep or hidden meaning as to why I did that. I just decided to do it that way. That’s all. And none of that means much of anything to anybody but me.

But here’s what I hope DOES mean something to at least someone. How I connect the physical and ethereal components of our world to the one true living, loving God of creation. Because without him there would be nothing to see and no one here to see it.

And I know, that the northern lights (aka: Aurora Borealis) or not actual brushstrokes from the so-called “art of God.” It’s a metaphor, Mickey. Let’s move on. But I used the metaphor to illustrate how even the most beautiful things we can witness here on earth are just previews of coming attractions in Heaven.

So, look into the glasses at the top of this post and you’ll see a small version of the emerald northern lights in the picture that inspired…

Emerald Embrace

I sat upon an emerald,
The green glow glazed my eyes.
And I beheld the art of God
His brushstrokes in the skies.
The neon shone
Through bright chartreuse,
And pine and malachite
And all the way into my heart
That still and liquid night.
I know, for God, the painting was
A glimpse of what will be,
In Heaven’s emerald embrace,
With Him eternally. © 2023

Hilux pickup has run into a hiccup

It was around this time of year, the summer of 1979 to be more precise, when I bought a little blue Hilux pickup from a Toyota dealership in Houston Texas. I remember the test drive. It was a hot, humid day, very normal for Houston, and I actually ran out of gas from the test drive.

So, I had to sit in a very hot Hilux pickup till the dealership brought more gas.

And that was after a walk to a convenience store to find a payphone. Because, yeah, that’s what you had to do back in those ancient days. Virtually no one drove around with a cell phone or mobile phone. And so-called smart phones were even invented yet, of course.

Anyway…

I had already done test drives in just about every other make, and model a small pickups their were back then. And I had narrowed my choice down to be either a black Datsun pick up or the blue Toyota. I liked that the Toyota had more headroom so it didn’t feel so small. And I liked how spunky it was.

So, I had kind of a World According to Garp moment. And I figured, hey, I’ll take the running out of gas as a sign that this should be my choice. After all, how likely would it be to do that again anytime soon. Especially since running out of gas gave me a clear indication of how the meters on the dash worked.

Win win.

OK, I shared all that with you to give you a little peek into the origin of my time as a small pickup owner.

Fast forward 46 years, and that little Hilux pickup is still in my garage.

But…

The recent turn of events in my personal health (or lack of health) have put my decades long relationship with Ol’ Blue in jeopardy. For one thing, the pick up has a standard transmission, and that requires working three pedals, and that third pedal requires the use of my left leg and foot. And they are not what they want were, let’s just say that.

Plus, Elgielene and I or looking at some changes to compensate, hopefully, for my less than optimum motor control. And those changes might have to include selling Ol’ Blue. If you’ve never kept a vehicle for 46 years, or you’ve never literally explored America, over the years, in a trustworthy car, you won’t understand my dilemma. And when I say trustworthy, I mean like my pickup, which to this day still runs like a top.

Yeah, to say that parting with Ol’ Blue would make me sad is a significant understatement.

But I might have to face the facts that I’ve always known. Nothing in this life lasts forever. Life throws you curveballs. And time moves on. And there’s nothing you can do about that.

You don’t know all my circumstances. So I can’t really get a definitive solution to my dilemma from you. But if you have any ideas about how a couple of old buddies can stay together and maybe cruise few more miles together, drop me an email and let me know. It’s silly, I know. But it’s like this…

Tony And His Little Blue Truck

Tony kept his tools in a little blue truck.
It ran like a top, and it helped him make a buck.
He drove through the country of the brave and free
And saw lots of places most people don’t see.

The little blue truck kept rolling for years.
There must have been magic in each of its gears.
It did more work than any ten trucks should.
Maybe there were angels underneath its hood.

Tony kept the truck when he bought other cars…
In spite of its age and in spite of its scars.
He just wouldn’t part with his rusty old friend.
They still had to go up around the next bend.

Some people say they’ve seen those two drive by
With the headlights off in a moonlit sky.
If it’s true what they say, this might bring you luck…
Wave and smile at Tony and his little blue truck. © 2013

People and things but not diamond rings

I bet you’ve heard some version of this expression: Small minds talk about people, mediocre minds talk about things, and great minds talk about ideas. You’ve heard something like that. Right?

It sure makes people and things appear to be less significant topics.

And I totally agree if you talk about people and things the way most people do these days. But it occurred to me, recently, when I thought about what Paul wrote in Philippians 4:8-9 how he talked about people and things. You remember that section. It’s where he told the Christians in Philippi how to focus their meditation and thoughts. And I don’t believe anyone who’s actually read Paul’s writings could say he had a small mind.

Many motivational speakers and marketing gurus love to talk about focus. And they love to categorize it into those three levels; small minds, mediocre minds, and great minds.

I’m gonna share a word picture analogy, about focus, that I shared around 12 years ago. But before I do I’d like you to think about what you can actually take to Heaven with you when your life, here on earth, is done. Sure, they say “you can’t take it with you” and “you won’t see a hearse pulling a U-Haul trailer.” But you certainly don’t have to go empty-handed. Metaphorically or figuratively speaking.

Anyway…

Picture this in your mind’s eye:

From the window in your kitchen you see a sunflower in your front yard. It’s standing there all alone in the rocks and grass or whatever happens to be in your yard. It’s beautiful, colorful, and downright delightful. So you pop out your trusty camera and snap a quick pic. But when you share the photo with friends, they don’t get the full effect. They also see the rocks and weeds and how your fence needs a paint job.

But, now picture this. You take your camera outside, kneel down, and really focus in on the sunflower itself. You capture the bright yellow petals with hues of sunset orange blended into interconnecting spirals. Your photo. clearly shows the fruit and seeds of the flower. And it’s great that you have a camera with enough pixels to show so many details. That helps you get a shot that vividly shares the beauty that caught your eyes.

And Paul wanted people to be able to get a much clearer picture of God’s peace. So he compiled a list of things to focus on. Uh-oh, that almost seems like Paul put his mind on people and things.

But that definitely wasn’t small-minded of him.

So you could say the small minds, mediocre minds, and great minds perspective is kind of a rule of thumb. But you don’t have to say it. Because I just did.

You’re welcome.

OK, did you think about what you can take to Heaven with you? Well, it’s the treasures Jesus talked about. And those treasures are based on relationships with people. And other eternal things. So, people and things are important to your Creator. Not just as something to talk about with no regard or love for them.

So, how ’bout it?

Will you give your love today
In the little things you do?
Will you think of words to say
That will help your neighbor, too?
Will you think before you speak
And say things you might regret?
Will you think up ways to care…
Ways you haven’t thought up yet?
Will you try to keep your love
In a secret hideaway?
Jesus gives you ALL of His…
So, you should give your love today. © 2015

Give Me Songs and brain health singalongs

When it comes to brain health, give me songs, real songs, any day of the week. And I think it’s important to add that little reference to “real songs” because there are a lot of fake ones out there now.

So, give me real songs, please, to help my brain.

I’ve shared quite a bit of information, here on TonyFunderburk.com, about the benefits of sound healing. Music is a powerful medicinal-like tool. Little did I know, as I shared that info, how relevant it would be to ME.

But, as I’ve said many times, life sure can throw you some curveballs. And the curveball I’m dealing with right now, aka stroke, has shown me just how important it is to maintain your brainwave connections. It seems like something you shouldn’t have to think about, pun completely intended, but you do. At least if you would like to live longer and healthier.

Of course, if you don’t care how long you live, and you don’t care about being healthy, pay no attention to anything I’m about to say.

I know you love music. Because you’re a regular human being. And regular human beings love music. And that’s great. Because it can help you if and when you have to deal with a brain injury. If I’m talking to no one, but myself, that’s OK because I know I’ll listen. And here’s why…

Give Me Songs

Give me songs to wake the brain waves
Through my often cluttered mind.
Give me sonic repercussions
No one else will ever find.
And a musical sensation
With connections to the Source
Of all music and creation.
Yes, please give me that, of course. © 2022

Arms open wide to let what or who inside?

Is there something or someone you can see yourself standing in front of with your arms open wide? And I’m talking about the way people stand ready to welcome something or someone they’ve been looking forward to. Can you think of anyone or anything right now?

Remember. Arms open wide might catch more than your bargain for.

O Corinthians! We have spoken openly to you, our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted by your own affections. Now in return for the same (I speak as to children), you also be open.

Do you suppose those Corinthians got to the point of looking forward to a visit from Paul with their arms open wide? And that’s not a trick question. I just wonder if they might’ve enjoyed his visits that much since he admonished them, to say the least.

Just so you know, this “letter” of mine isn’t intended to admonish anybody. It’s just another opportunity. I took to hopefully get you to think about the relational perspective in Paul’s letters. And to encourage you to notice the ever present power of God’s love in his messages.

I produced a song a few years back that’s a fictional and imaginary perspective of looking up, where your hope lies, with arms open wide. I only have one recording of it. And unfortunately, the recording is from a time when my voice was less than optimum due to respiratory issues. But I’m sharing the lyrics here. And I’ll share a link to a video version with the recorded audio.

Catch The Moon

See the ball of light
In the deep blue night
Shines like a big white whole note
On a musical flight
Floating through space and through time
Like a hot air balloon

Feel the cool night air
Dancing through your hair
Laugh right out loud and then watch
Stars light up everywhere
Look up with your arms open wide,
And you will Catch The Moon.
Catch The Moon…Catch The Moon…Catch The Moon

Modulate up a step to (Instrumental) Repeat Chorus

Music fills the skies
As you harmonize
Lyrics line up and fall down
And they land in your eyes.
Look up with your arms open wide,
And you will Catch The Moon. © 2019

Woods of Wonder over yonder where I wander

The woods of wonder, where I wander in my imagination, don’t look the same as the beautiful forests I’ve wandered through across the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Of course, those forests, in the majestic Colorado mountains, are beautiful. But they don’t even remotely compare with the ones in my mind.

Reminds me how Paul compared life here on Earth to Heaven.

He wrote a letter to the new Roman Christians and said, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Of course, the sufferings of this present time don’t even remotely compare to the glory that’ll be revealed in us. Because that glory is the one true living, loving God of creation. So how could anything be compared to Him? Hint: it can’t.

Yeah, the creator of the universe and all life on our little blue planet lives IN those who believe and trust in him. And that’s the reason why you even have an imagination. And I believe it’s why your imagination can dream up visions that go far beyond the pale shades of this broken world.

That being said, you couldn’t imagine beyond yourself without the pale shades and creations of this broken world. And that’s why I thank God for creating me in the world I can enjoy as I walk through the…

Woods of Wonder

Walking in the woods of wonder…
Leaping off a limb of lights…
Slipping down a secret scots pine…
Kiwi trees are flying kites.
All around are dancing aspens…
With their white and wondrous wings…
Bristling branches and sweet breezes…
Where a speckled sparrow sings.
Rainbow redwoods rake the blue sky…
Mystic music mingles in…
Dragons drift by in their dreamboats…
Lemon larkspurs live within.
Walking in the woods of wonder…
Thinking thoughts of thrilling things…
Life’s a lilac filled with lightning..
We’re all wearing water wings. © 2003

All things are pure. Is that right? Are you sure?

“To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.” Paul wrote those words to Titus. And I get what he meant/means by that. Especially when I remember my young, naïve self.

Yeah, I remember a time when I thought all things are pure.

And that’s despite the fact that I could recall, clearly, the loud, angry, bordering on violent arguments. My young parents had before they divorced. I was about four years old when all that took place. But to this day, I remember thinking, even as a young boy, how wrong those arguments were.

Once they separated, and soon divorced each other, my younger brother and I were sent to my grandparents house (my dad’s parents) and we lived there for a year or two. And that’s where, due to the Christian influence of my grandmother, I started taking all things are pure again.

But guess what shattered and destroy that illusion for me. Never mind. Don’t try guessing. Because I’ll just come right out and tell you. My pure illusion (or delusion if you prefer) quickly disappeared once I entered into our great and glorious government school system.

I know the government school system, also known as government indoctrination camps, is much worse than it was back when I was a young kid. But it was already terrible even back then.

Government should have no business running schools.

Gigantic bureaucratic committee systems always, always, always go into anti-God mode. Whether they start that way or eventually end up that way. In America is living proof how true that is.

When I first started, school, elementary schools were still fairly safe for little kids. And particularly in the south where I started, Oklahoma and Texas, there was still a little bit of Christian influence. But once I advanced into junior high, where kids came from a wider variety of neighborhoods, I started to hear “dirty” jokes, and crude remarks from the boys about the girls.

Up to that point I had been raised to know that a potty mouth kid would get his mouth washed out with soap. And I knew I wanted no part of that. Even as a little kid I didn’t see the point of talking like that.

But, as the world would have it, my little light didn’t shine brightly enough to keep all things pure around me. So, the jokes and crude remarks increased as I went from junior high to high school.

And, we’re all adults here. So, I’m sure I don’t have to ‘splain it to you how eventually the pure illusion transformed into the profane and debased world we live in now. But what’s even more troubling than that is how the world I thought was pure, when I was a kid, was already profane and debased. And it gets even worse than that. Because the world was that way as far back as you can go in time.

Maybe you could say the very first generation was OK.

But even that generation, made up of only two people, messed up bad. And they found out, real fast, how God wants purity. And they found out the consequences of not doing what He says. We’ve all been finding out ever since then. No generation has figured out how to learn from the mistakes.

And that’s why Paul told Titus that those ” to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure.”

And when nothing is pure, as a friend of mine used to say, there’s no bottom to that abyss.

So, that’s why so much of what I write contains flights of fancy and impossible, imaginary scenes and colors and light. Because I want to create at least some tiny droplets where all things are still pure andpoint to the source of hope and purity. Then I like to pour those little droplets into the dried up ground of the world that needs Jesus.

Reading The Raindrops

Little notes fall on the flowers in the garden
From a cloud that’s floating just above the trees.
I can hear the whole sky play
A little song for me today.
Reading the raindrops I can sing along with ease.

And the tympani is thunder pounding rhythm.
The conductor holds the lightning in his hand.
It’s a symphony, a song,
And it plays the whole day long.
Reading the raindrops I’m the singer in the band.

All the instruments are needed for the music.
It’s so beautiful that frozen hearts are thawed.
When I give up self-control,
It flows deep into my soul.
Reading the raindrops, little love notes, straight from God.  © 2013

Elephant and man from the only one who can

You might realize the incredible elephant and man similarities. But I’m gonna share a little article. I discovered this morning that I think shows even more than the writer imagined.

The connections between elephant and man

¶ When an elephant needs to be transported by plane from one country to another, for example, from India to the United States, they are placed in its cage… of baby chicks.

Yes, you read that right: tiny baby chicks.

Why ? Because, despite its imposing mole, the elephant is extremely afraid of hurting it. For this reason, during the entire flight, it remains perfectly still, so as not to risk crushing a single one.

This is how you maintain the balance of the plane. And it’s also the first proof of its noble nature.

Fascinated by this behavior, some scientists have studied the elephant’s brain. They’ve discovered the presence of fusiform cells, extremely rare neurons, also found in humans. They are those connected to self-awareness, empathy and social perception.

In other words, the elephant isn’t just big physically: it’s also big emotionally. Feel, understand, act with silent wisdom.

Leonardo da Vinci, deeply fascinated by nature, wrote about him: “The elephant embodies uprightness, reason and temperance. ”

And they added: He enters the river and bathes with a kind of solemnity, as if he wanted to cleanse himself of all evil. If you meet a lost man, he gently escorts him to the right path. You never walk alone: always in group, always led by a leader.

It’s pudgy.

They only mate at night, far from the pack, and before returning to their peers, they wash. And if you meet a herd on the path, move it gently with the proboscide, so as not to hurt anyone.

But what moves me more than anything is this: when the elephant feels the end is near, it moves away from the herd and goes to die alone, in a remote place. Why does he do that? To save the young ones the pain of seeing him die. For the stink. Out of compassion. Because of dignity. Three rare virtues.

Even among men. ¶

Wow! I didn’t know some of that stuff about elephants. But it’s still just one of millions of reasons to acknowledge and appreciate a common designer of all the creatures here on earth.

Kinda makes me wonder if elephants and man (women too, of course)  we’ll both be in Heaven. They certainly seem cool and lovable enough to be there. But then again, as you know, being lovable is not how you get to Heaven. If it worked that way, I’m sure this guy could get in…

Marimba the Yellow Elephant

They got a lotta pretty, white beach in Puerto Rico
Where you can hear the tambourines and castanets,
But the finest thing they got is a yellow elephant.
He named Marimba, a friend you can’t forget.

You may say you never heard of a yellow elephant,
But it’s true, and Marimba, he quite a lucky guy.
You see he stays as yellow as Puerto Rican bananas
By basking ‘neath the balmy Puerto Rico sky.

Marimba, Marimba…you lucky elephant…
Lying in the sand like a seashell.
You got Mister Blue Ocean to put you to sleep.
You get oh so drowsy from the stories he tell.

They got places down there that look like pictures.
They got weather that is sunny all day long,
But nothing can compare with the yellow elephant.
I ask you, am I right or am I wrong?

Come to Puerto Rico.
Come to see the sights,
But most of all come to see Marimba.
It’s like looking at a thousand yellow lights. © 1989

Works of the law? Everybody say, naw

I read the phrase, works of the law, this morning, and the theme song from the TV show COPS popped into my head. Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do?

Bad boys need to know works of the law ain’t the way to go.

By the way, according to Jesus Himself, all boys are bad boys. In case you didn’t already know, works of the law is just another way of saying things you do or good deeds. Or in street talk, you might hear stuff you does with the word stuff being replaced by filthy language, of course.

And the reason I say those so-called good deeds ain’t the way to go is because that’s exactly what Paul said when he wrote a letter to the Galatians. Here’s a direct quote:

“…knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.”

That’s a crystal clear statement.

So, why do many, if not most, Christians seem to prefer the bondage of the law? I’ll tell you why I think they do. Because then it takes the responsibility of their sins off their own shoulders and sloughs it off to God.

But maybe you disagree with that. Maybe you believe that getting baptized, tithing your 10%, and doing good deeds in your community is somehow a “necessary” extension of your faith. It isn’t.

Those things certainly aren’t evil. And they won’t get you banned from Heaven. But they won’t get you into Heaven either. And calling them an outer expression of your inner commitment doesn’t change those facts at all.

So, my recommendation is to read Paul’s letter to the Galatians again. And be sure to ask the good Lord to open your eyes, fully, to his message. You might even see the Bible’s plot, twist and find…

Freedom

Faith working through love…
Let’s praise God for our liberty…
Christ paid off our debt…
Only in Him are we truly free.

Love leads into joy…
Law leads back into slavery…
God gave us The Way.
Just believe, and we’re truly free.

Freedom from the law that kills,
Freedom with our own free wills,
Freedom from the world of sin…
Just let Jesus in, let the joy begin
Share a hopeful grin, with the Lord “We Win”!
Praise God for what we can become
With our freedom.

What law couldn’t do
Jesus did with finality.
He rose up from the dead
And promised the same life for you and me.

So we have…

Wisdom Bible verses to help you with those curses

You had no control over it. So, you were born into a cursed world and you have to struggle with that your whole life. How’s that for starting off an encouraging message for you? Well, never worry and never fear. Because Funderman is here with some wisdom Bible verses to help you understand how God provides the tools you need to overcome the curses.

So, here’s a list of wisdom Bible verses.

First a few Psalms:

37:30 – The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, And his tongue talks of justice.

49:3 – My mouth shall speak wisdom, And the meditation of my heart shall give understanding.

51:6 – Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.

90:12 – So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

104:24 – O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all.

111:10 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.

136:5 – To Him who by wisdom made the heavens, For His mercy endures forever;

Now a few Proverbs:

1: 7 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

2:2 – So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding;

2:6 – For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;

2:7 – He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly;

2:10-11 – When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you,

3:13 – Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding;

3:19 – The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding He established the heavens;

OK, that’s all for now. I shared seven short verses from each section to get you started. I think you can see how important wisdom is to God. And here’s a rhyme I wrote, 30 years ago, as I read the Bible and pondered wisdom one day. Just in case something a little more contemporary might help…

Get Wise

Don’t drink the wine of violence
Or eat the bread of hate.
You might just get away with it.
Can you afford to wait?

Don’t push and shove the simple.
Seek knowledge just like gold.
And in so doing you’ll lay up
Your treasures manifold.

A word to the confounded…
Pour light into your eyes.
If you expect more than neglect,
Get wisdom; yeah get wise.

Get wise to the deceiver.
Don’t harken to his lies.
Keep commanding understanding.
Get wisdom; yeah get wise.

Don’t walk, you, with the wicked.
Beware the scornful tongue.
Let never part your loving heart
And live forever young.

Pure heart is the best place to start

Why would God issue something as a commandment? Do you think it’s just because He enjoys bossin’ us around? Or maybe you think it’s his preferred way of showing us who’s in charge? I think those things might be true now and then. But did you know that sometimes his purpose is love. Like when Paul wrote a letter to Timothy and explained how the purpose for a certain commandment was “love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith” (1 Timothy 1:5, NKJV)

*GASP* But it’s supposed to come from a pure heart. Yikes!

And I thought the Bible teaches how your heart is wicked. And it says “who can know it?” Golly gee, Wally, it’s too confusing.

But let’s see if we can sort this out a little better. Are you with me? You know what’s more than just a little bit important when you wanna get yourself a nice chunk of wisdom out of the Bible? Yeah, if you said, “context,” you’re more than a little bit right. Because if you take things out of context, the Bible, like any other book, is a lot more difficult to wrap your mind around.

When Paul wrote his first letter to Timothy, he wanted his spiritual son to understand how false teachers, with ulterior motives, had wormed their way into the church at Ephesus. And he encouraged and guided Timothy to keep a pure heart motivated by love for those people and their need to hear more about the new dispensation of grace.

It’s another one of many, many times love plays the dominant role in Paul’s message. You could almost glide past that passage without a second thought about the pure heart part. But my guess is that Paul wanted Timothy to understand that his do this don’t do that counseling was necessary for the young church that needed a leader who would bring order.

On your own, you don’t have, and you never could have a pure heart. So thankfully you and I do have the Way to be seen by God as do we do have that kind of heart. And that’s why I wrote a praise and worship song that says…

Your Love Restored My Soul

From my mother’s womb You have been my God…
Even if I didn’t always know it.
And I’ve loved You since my salvation day…
Even if…I didn’t always show it.

I believe Your Son is the only Way
To the life I know is never-ending…
So I cast my lot with the King of Kings
And His Truth I trust is never bending.

Jesus…Your love restored my soul.
You gave Your life to make me whole.
I’d be a lifeless lump of coal…oh
But Jesus…Your love restored my soul.

On my darkest days I am not alone.
You indwell me with Your Holy Spirit.
And Your “still small voice” is an open book
And Your grace is there if I draw near it…

And in that open Book is the one True God…
And the words revolve around His story.
And the words are turned into flesh and bone,
And He shares, with each of us, His glory.

Chorus twice

Your love restored my soul…    © 2010

Temptation and desire get your help from way up higher

Temptation and desire don’t just happen to atheists and pagans. As a writer of an article, I read a couple of days ago, said, “They can affect Christians who have too much exposure to inappropriate content, such as sexual imagery, materialism, or divisive rhetoric.”

So, temptation and desire can even challenge Christians. Imagine that.

Don’t you wish there was something in the Bible that could help you and me with that??

Yeah, it would be great if God wouldn’t just leave us in the dark when it comes to things like temptation, certain desires, and the dark, sinful side of life. Sure He wrote a bunch of complicated laws on some stone tablets for Moses to take to the Israelites. But that somehow doesn’t seem to apply to all the stuff we have to deal with here in 2025.

I guess God never imagined we would have access to so much information and technology as He wrote on to stone.

Of course I’m being facetious. Because you and I, and the whole world put together, could never devise, construct, or even imagine a computer or technology that’s even a fraction of God’s mind. And He does give us help with temptation and desire. And you can find that wonderful help all through the apostle Paul’s letters. I think some of the best help is in 1 Corinthians.

If you take the time to use that link, I recommend you read the whole letter. Chapter 13, especially. Because that’s a key chapter that illustrates why I’m always talking about the power of God’s love. If you haven’t already tapped into that power, there’s no better time than right this second.

Even in this life, you can start living…

Larger Than Life

We live in a greed land…take more than we need land.
We go for the gusto…creating a dustbowl.
A media earful…is leaving us fearful.
It may come to haunt us…someday doesn’t want us.

More money, more persona…everyone’s a prima donna.
Can’t we understand that it’s larger than life?
Another car and another diamond…
The way we take is like a crime, and
Can’t we understand that it’s larger than life?

We’re living much faster…we flirt with disaster.
We use our resources as conquering forces.
And we don’t hear the drumming…the enemy’s coming.
We still have a Savior…let’s change our behavior.

More money, more persona…everyone’s a prima donna.
Can’t we understand that it’s larger than life?
Another car and another diamond…
The way we take is like a crime, and
Can’t we understand that it’s larger than life?

There’s so much more than just the here and now.
This isn’t nearly all there is.
But there are too many here who will never know how
This isn’t nearly all there is…

Life is larger than life.    © 1988

Envy kills joy so don't treat it like a toy

Comparison and envy. Thank goodness Christians don’t have to deal with that stuff. Right? Because comparison kills creativity. And envy kills joy. Matter of fact, it even kills people. Yikes!

It’s not an exaggeration to say envy kills joy and people.

You can find it in one of the oldest books of the Bible, in Job, where it says, “For wrath kills a foolish man, And envy slays a simple one.”

Solomon, who at one point in time was considered the wisest man, wrote this: “A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones.”

Even when you dive into the book of Acts, in the New Testament, it pops up again: “…when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul.”

I’d say those three examples show how envy kills joy. And those aren’t, by any means, the only examples I could share. But I think you get the point. Right?

Envy bad.

I read somewhere (probably on social media) where social media often leads Christians to compare their lives, ministries, or spiritual journeys with others. And it added how that “fosters envy or feelings of inadequacy when seeing curated, idealized posts.”

So. Envy is like poison.

But just like with other poisons, there’s an antidote. Thank God.

You can find a recipe for the antidote in lots of forms throughout the best selling book of all time. Yeah, the Bible. I believe the easiest form of the recipe is found in one of the two Commandments Jesus said, supersede the others. And, of course, that commandment is.” love your neighbor as yourself.”

It’s amazing, but not surprising, how much and how often the theme of love comes up throughout the Bible. You owe every second of your life to love. I do too. But not just any love. Because not just any love could hold the trillions of cells in your body together. Let alone all the material that makes up the universe.

But God’s love can do that. And more.

You’re free to not give it another thought today. And you’re even free to ignore His love your entire life, and be separated from Him and everyone who loves Him, forever. But I don’t recommend that choice. Because I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if you ended up in the whirlpool of envy. And you remember? What envy does, right?

Yeah, and kills joy.

After the fire you don't simply retire

You do go through fire in this life. No matter who you are. No matter how much or how little money you have. And no matter how many connections in high places you have. Nobody gets out of it. The important thing is, where do you end up after the fire?

And you WILL end up somewhere after the fire of this life burns out.

I know you already know that. But I also know, if comments on social media are any indication, that even many Christians appear to be confused and filled with negativity. And they pray, and ask others to pray for God to clean house. But that kind of prayer fails to remember something called the Body of Christ. You might recall how Paul described and defined the role of the Body of Christ in this dispensation of Grace.

As members of that Body, you and I called upon to share that amazingly beautiful and free gift of Grace with anyone who is willing to listen to it. Plus, you and I have a fantastic guidebook to help us be more effective with that message. In fact, that guidebook is where we got the information that tells us we have a choice to make and a limited time to make it.

And lots of people you know (maybe most of the people you know) don’t already know they have a choice and that time is running out.

So here’s my suggestion for the day. You can pray and ask God to take away your problems. And you can wait until after the fire in your life burns out before you try to help someone else avoid it. Or you can do this…

Instead

Don’t try to pray away all the pain.
You could be disappointed, disillusioned, disenchanted.
Don’t ask God to save you from the hurt.
You could live to see that the prayer has not been granted.

Instead…give thanks for all His love.
Instead…be glad for all He’s done.
Our sin could torture us forever.
Instead…He gave His only Son.

Don’t be so quick to ask for an end
To the hard times, rocky roads, and fire and rain.
Don’t cry out for a wonderful sign
And when it doesn’t appear, throw your hands up in vain.

Instead…give thanks for all His love.
Instead…be glad for all He’s done.
Our sin could torture us forever.
Instead…He gave His only Son.

There will be trials…and tribulation,
In every life…in every nation.
You could give up…but bow your head
And thank your loving Lord instead.

Morning Star designs inspired lyrical lines

He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. And that happened mostly because of just one song. So, that must’ve been quite a song. Right? You got it. So good that you’ve probably sung it at least once in your life, probably way more. Can you guess which song it is? I’ll give you a hint. The words were inspired by something the writer saw one early morning. And back in 2022 I wrote some other words to go with the tune of that song. And my words were inspired by what I call morning star designs I saw in a photo a friend of mine took.

You can see a little bit of that picture in the glasses that go with this blog post. I love how the pinks, yellows, and oranges blend into the lavenders, magentas, and blues. And it all happens in an actual sunrise.

But maybe you wonder why I mention morning star designs?

And, then again, maybe you don’t. Either way, I’m gonna tell you. I use it as a reference to a reference you find in a verse close to the very end of the Bible. In fact, there are only five other verses after it so, in Revelation 22:16 you see Jesus, calling Himself, the Morning Star.

To be even more accurate, he calls Himself “the Bright and Morning Star.”

And maybe remember what Babe Ruth said. “It ain’t braggin’, if it’s true.”

And I’m here to tell you, it’s true.

By the way, Lord willing, I’ll be here to tell you that again tomorrow. And the day after and the day after and so on till my days here on this floating blue ball in space are finished. That final day, for me, will be my personal Independence Day. Because that’s when I’ll be set free from the shackles of the depreciating constraints of my broken body.

I don’t expect there will be any fireworks. But it will be glorious. And speaking of glorious, cheers to a happy, healthy, and safe, American Independence Day. And check out the colors, I mentioned earlier, stars in this…

Morning Star Spangled Creation

Oh say, can you see…
From the coconut tree,
The pastels and the blues…
Changing shape, changing hues?

And, serenely, the skies
Reach your soul through your eyes,
And the ripples reflect
The Divine Intellect.

So, the sun still shines on
Whether it’s dusk or dawn,
A glimpse of the love
From the Heavens above.
Oh say, can you behold this
Indifferently and not be awed
By complexity, design…
The creation of God?  © 2022

Did you guess the name of the Songwriters Hall of Fame lyricist? Francis Scott Key. He wrote that little ditty you might’ve heard in a ball game: the Star-Spangled Banner. And you can actually sing the words I wrote to that same tune. How cool is that?
