Friend of mine who's better than a valentine

So, there was this friend of mine who always said some pretty radical stuff. Like “abhor what is evil.” Well, I looked up the word “abhor.” And do you know what it means? Basically to hate something with all your might. Yikes!

Yeah, this friend of mine could really pour gasoline on a fire.

But don’t be too quick to jump on his case. Because he also said stuff like “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” But then he followed that up with some more gasoline on the fire by saying, “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” Wow, some might think his ego needs a reality check.

In fact, I can almost hear somebody ask, “Who died and made you God?”

And to say that is the understatement of the century would be an understatement.

Because (did I mention?) this friend of mine just so happened to be killed for the radical stuff he said. But, to the consternation of his accusers and killers, he had already predicted his own death. And do you know what my egomaniac friend did on the last day before they killed him?

He washed the dirty feet of others. And he comforted others as they rambled on about their petty problems.

Then, as he was being put to death, in a most horrific way (even after being found innocent in kangaroo court), he still prayed to God to forgive the ones who killed him. He said they didn’t know what they were doing.

On this first Sunday, in the month of February of 2024, I hope you’ll remember my friend Jesus in your prayers. If you can’t do it for Him, do it for yourself. Because He’s so much more than just a friend. He created you and me.

And knowing what He did to provide me something I don’t deserve inspired me to look out a window, during a particularly colorful sunset, and write…

Friend Of Mine

As I look between these bars tonight
And see the blue and red firelight,
I’m reminded of the life in me
That was put there so creatively.
And I’m humbled by the endless love
From the God who will raise me above
Even all this glorious design.
Yeah, I’m glad He is a friend of mine.

Stay tuned,

Gifts from God that are wonderful, not odd

They can be gifts from God. And they can certainly just be the result of random thoughts your brain interprets and visualizes randomly. But how do you know which is which?

Well, it takes more than a feeling to know if they’re gifts from God.

Oh wait. I haven’t even mentioned what I’m talking about. How rude of me. Of course, I’m talking about dreams. You know. Those movies you get to watch, while you’re sleeping, without a subscription to Netflix or YouTube. And if you tell me you don’t dream, I feel sorry for you.

Although, come to think of it, I don’t dream all the time. Or else I don’t remember them all if I DO dream all the time.

Anyway…

Those sleep time movies can be awesome, gruesome, lonesome, and even troublesome. Well, at least some of them can be. And that about somes, uh, sums it up.

But did you know (you probably did and still do) that dreams play a big role in the Bible? Yeah, probably most people never dreamed how big a role (see what I did there?). And there’s a section where a prophet, named Joel, talked about how, in the “last days,” God will pour out of his Spirit and “old men will dream dreams.” And that’s important enough for Luke, the physician, to quote Joel’s prophesy.

That’s a clear case of dreams being gifts from God.

And here’s another way dreams are gifts from God. I’m talking about those visions or yearnings you get in your mind during the daytime. Not random brainwaves. Actual concentrated thoughts. You might not connect them to your Creator.

But it’s a mistake to miss that connection.

Because, at the very least, you couldn’t even think if it weren’t for God. Because if He didn’t exist, you wouldn’t either. And, by simple deductive logic, if you didn’t exist, your dreams wouldn’t either. Game! Set! Match!

OK, on that note, I shared all that so I could share something I’ve shared before. Whew, that’s a lot of sharing. Yeah, it’s what I consider an encouragement, especially to youngsters, to dream. AND to follow through. Because, well, read, and you’ll see why.

Dream The Dreams

Waking up from silly dreams isn’t silly as it seems
Because dreamers are what makes the world go ’round.
With those pictures in your head,
As you rise up out of bed,
You might find the thing that needed to be found.
You might dream of flying cars
That go cruising through the stars,
Then design a brand new turbo rocket ship.
You might wake up from your sleep
With an awesome way to keep
People safer when they’re going on a trip.
What if you could dream a dream
That, to some, could sound extreme,
But your idea helped to ease a lot of pain?
Well, put on your dreaming hat
‘Cause we need more dreams like that,
And they’re waiting to be dreamed inside your brain.
If you’re eager to create, and you find you just can’t wait,
And your dreams are overflowing from your ears,
Take a breath and write ’em down, with a smile and not a frown.
Then your dreams become ideas you’ll have for years.
When you dream, don’t think it’s odd.
Dreams are thoughtful gifts from God.
They can help to give your weary mind some rest.
So relax and dream away.
Every day’s a brand new day
To begin to dream the dreams that you dream best.

Complex capabilities fill me with tranquilities

I shared some stuff a few years ago that bears repeating. Because even though government schools dumb down all who attend, teach in, and run those institutions, humans still have complex capabilities other creatures don’t have.

My wife and I share a common ancestor. My dog and I do not.

Some evolutionary scientists embrace a theory they call “convergent evolution”. This is where complex capabilities might be found in unrelated organisms but not in their so-called “evolutionary ancestors”. These scientists say a “common need caused identical complexities to evolve”.

So, that proves a common ancestor. Right?

Not so fast.

Let’s consider, for a moment, three little bones. (no, not the Bob Marley song “Three Little Birds”) The three little bones I’m talking about are in the ears of mammals. And they’re called the stapes, incus, and malleus. These little bones are arranged in a complex way with a precise fit to give mammals the ability to hear a wide range of sounds.

One explanation for this could be the evolutionary scientists’ perspective.

They evolved from the bones in a reptile’s jaw.

OK…if that’s true, then it must have happened at least twice. And there should be transitional fossils found in the fossil records, but so far none have been found or presented. Also, if there was some sort of transition from reptile jaw bones to complex bones found in the ears of mammals, how did any transitional organisms hear during the millions of years of transition?

Huh? Speak up! How did they survive without those complex capabilities?

Without the ability to hear, and hear well, survival would have been virtually impossible.

It would have taken some sort of miracle. And to believe that sort of “miracle” could happen more than once? Well, that would require a common designer. Not a common “need.”

Hey, you gotta put your faith somewhere. I’m not foolish enough to believe everything came from nothing. And I’m not foolish enough to believe that a complex universe, filled with creatures that exhibit a wide range of complex capabilities, sprang out of a compressed dot.

No, my faith isn’t blind. It’s based on where the evidence leads. The similarities of design in different organisms imply a common designer. I call that designer God. In fact, I call Him Lord.

You can have your accidental convergence.

But I’ll take purposeful intelligent design.

All of creation holds information…
Encoded within every cell.
All of the best minds in each generation
Won’t banish what Christians know well…

Crimson coat contained this note

As an adjective, a dictionary defines it: deep purplish-red or sanguinary. And then a check on the word “sanguinary” shows this definition: full of or characterized by bloodshed; bloody – ready or eager to shed blood; bloodthirsty. Yikes! So, I guess if I wrote a sonnet about a tree dressed in a crimson coat of leaves, I’d be a bloodthirsty poet with some sort of deep purplish-red fixation.

Well, we can’t have that, now can we.

Wrong!

We most certainly can have that.

Because I wrote a sonnet about a crimson coat.

Oh sure. Sonnets are all the rage now. Haven’t you heard? No? Well, you should get your eyes off Facadebook once in a while and get out into the real world. The world where sonnets practically grow on trees.

OK, not really. I kid. I’m kidding. I’m a kidder. You should know that by now.

Anyway…

I recently saw a beautiful picture (check the view inside my glasses), on another social media channel besides Facadebook (yes, they exist). And as I’m wont (that’s not a typo, the apostrophe left out makes it a whole ‘nother word) to do, I wrote a poem. But not just any poem. A sonnet, which, as I’m sure you’re well aware, is 3 quatrains followed by a couplet.

And I’m about to share it with you. It’s a short story, within a note, within a pocket, within an idea that came to me when I saw the photograph. If you hate sonnets, you’ve probably already moved on. But if not, save yourself some time and skip my bloodthirsty excursion into this poetic madness I call…

Crimson Coat Sonnet

She stood alone by frozen water,
Protected by that crimson coat
Her lover bought her on her birthday
And, in the pocket, left this note:
“In winters chill, when you are still warm,
Remember me. I’ll be with you
As close as spirits ever can be,
As close as vision is to view.”
With smiling lips and tear-filled eyes
She conjured up his fading face
Just as she’s done for twenty years now,
When she returns to, this, their place.
But now she’s just this poem I wrote.
A tree now wears her crimson coat.

Follow the tracks as the light that refracts

A train can’t make turns at the next intersection the way your car or pickup can. They have to follow the tracks. But even trains can go just about anywhere. Because there isn’t just one set of tracks.

But they don’t get to follow the tracks in more than one direction at a time.

Not only is it impossible, it’s a misguided idea to even try.

So, what does this have to do with anything in your life? Maybe nothing. In fact, I know most of the people who read what I write or listen to what I say on my podcast don’t have an issue with trying to follow multiple tracks in life. But you might not be one of them. And you might be someone who, like Mary MacGregor sang back in 1976, is torn between two lovers. One of them is YOU. And the other is the “higher power” you sense is “somewhere out there.”

All this fuzzy philosophical stuff came up in my brain when I looked at a picture someone shared on social media. It’s an account filled with amazing photography and art. Beautiful colors. Amazing settings. Just plain fun to see.

One of the pictures was of what appeared to be lighting on some railroad tracks. And, in my fat-headed poet brain, the image represented the journey you and I take in this life. So many people want to know the meaning of life. But way too many of them believe it can be discovered if you just “follow your heart.”

And then, before they know it, in a FLASH, it’s over.

If you’re still young, that won’t have nearly the impact it does on people who’ve lived several decades. But it’s SO true anyway. And when you consider how long eternity will be, your time on earth will eventually seem faster than the time it takes lightning to strike.

So, my recommendation is to pick a “lover.” But I highly recommend you check into the “higher power” option. Because there most definitely IS a higher power. And He created you. He has the most famous name ever. And, sadly, way too many people are uncomfortable with the mention of it.

But you’re only here because Jesus made it possible for you to be alive. And He made it possible for you to have the option of eternal life. There IS a sort of catch. He is the ONLY way to that eternal life. You might say He laid the tracks and it’s up to you to choose to follow those tracks. In fact, I just said it.

So, will you do that? Or will you just be another flash of…

Lightning On The Tracks

Lightnin’ on the tracks
And dancin’ in the sky.
Electrical collusion
In the quest for knowing why
We are here.

Parallel begins
The journey to one place,
Away from Earth’s delusion
And straight into God’s grace
With no fear.

Kick the habit of the unhealthy rabbit

Where do vitamins originally come from? And where does nutrition start? Food. I’ve never been able to kick the habit of eating every day. And I don’t want to. Food good. No food, bad. I’ll be the first (or second) to admit I don’t eat what’s best for me 100% of the time. Yeah, we splurge, now and then, in the FunderHaus. But we DO make it a habit to be a lot more aware of what we eat.

And we DID kick the habit of rabbit food.

That’s what my father-in-law used to call my meals back in my vegetarian days. NOT vegan. I still ate fish and fowl. But my typical diet consisted of a lot of plant-based foods. I’ve mentioned why that was the case, a few times, here on my website. Basically I followed the (so-called) advice of doctors who had a vendetta against red meat. And that was because of some issues they believed were hereditary and a cause for alarm. And that was because my Dad died of kidney failure which they attributed to red meat proteins and stunted growth in his kidney.

Naturally, doctors thought I might have the same traits because they determined my cholesterol levels were too high. Don’t get me started on where that led. Just know it was a junk diagnosis. Which I found out the hard way.

Anyway.,.

I eschewed (which has nothing to do with your mandibular joint) red meats. Then, I continued to remove other meats until I reached a point where the only non-plant food I ate was fish and eggs. Suffice it to say, there was no joy in Mudville, for the mighty Tony loved savory, beefy burgers and steaks. But since doctors always know best…

Moving right along. Eventually, after several years on a vegetarian diet, FINALLY, my cholesterol levels went UP. (Wait, did he say “up?” Shouldn’t that be “down?”)

No, you read that right.

Cholesterol levels went up. And my doctor advised me to take a statin drug called Baycol. That’s bad enough. But what’s worse is, I got the first month’s prescription worth of the despicable stuff. After about two weeks, Elgielene told me, one morning, that I looked like I was dying. Well, that didn’t seem like the right result. So, I stopped the drug.

And my doctor wasn’t pleased with my decision. But, it just so happened, some time later, I received a notice in the mail that I could be part of a class action suit against the makers of Baycol. Apparently the helpful little statin drug was killing people. Thanks to my observant, and ever-vigilant wife, I wasn’t one of them.

OK, there’s a whole lot more to my food and drug journey. But I don’t want to jump into that quicksand right now. The highlight that led to where we are now, in the FunderHaus, is my appointment with a chiropractor/naturopath.

The short version of that meeting is that he got me back on red meats (yay!) and my cholesterol levels went down.

Yep. Down.

So, Elgielene and I stopped the “western medicine” approach. And we started putting our money in the best source of vitamins and minerals. And that’s simply better food. We follow a carnivore based diet with a focus on grass fed beef. Plus, we add some supplements to help our immune systems. And we filter our water.

So, back to basics. Just plain ol’ food.

Wait. Maybe I shouldn’t say “plain.” Because Elgielene made a meat loaf type dish twice this past week that’s maybe my new favorite. I won’t share the recipe right now because I don’t know it. But I WILL say, it includes crispy bacon.

We buy as much organic as we can. You might think that’s much more expensive. Nope. It’s really not more expensive to eat organic, when you consider the money you’ll save on doctor’s bills for nutrition related health problems. Which most health problems are.

And here’s something else to consider. Real, nutritious, delicious food doesn’t overwork your internal organs like processed vitamins. But don’t take my word for it. Look into it for yourself. And see if you can kick the habit of buying boxed and highly processed “foods” with weird-sounding ingredients.

As for me, I believe there’s a good reason why God started out with “herbs of the field” and eventually added meat. But I’ll leave that for another time.

Cheers to your health.

Hey, I’m talkin’ to you man.
Be a healthy happy human.
It’s not so hard to do man,
But don’t wait one more day.

Think about what you’re eatin’…
Those brain cells you’re mistreatin’…
Bad habits keep repeatin’
Unless you stop and say…

“I’m a healthy happy human
‘Cause I know what to do man.
I’m changin’ through and through man,
I’m gonna eat well and pray.”

Stay tuned,

Think zone is all your own

Hey fathead. Yeah, YOU! Don’t get mad. I’m just tellin’ it like it is. Because essentially you’re a fathead. For that matter, so am I. So, were in this together. Of course, I’m talking about that think zone inside your head. Your brain. It’s made up of about 60% fat.

How can you even function with such a sludge-filled think zone?

I mean, how could thoughts move around in all that fat? Yeah, the average adult brain weighs about three pounds. That means about 1.8 pounds are fat. In your head. So, see? I wasn’t fat-shaming you when I called you fathead. I was just stating the scientific fact. And you gotta trust the science, right?

According to those who’ve chopped up brains to find out, the remaining 40% of your brain is “a combination of water, protein, carbohydrates, and salts.” (side note: That quote left out the Oxford comma after carbohydrates, but I added it for your protection. You’re welcome.)

Anyway…

Your brain’s not a muscle (even though it needs a daily workout). But it IS quite an intricate design filled with blood vessels and nerves and neurons and glial cells. And when you dive even deeper into your think zone, way down to the molecular level, you get to the fatty acids. They’re so essential to your brain’s integrity and ability to perform that just about everybody who talks about ‘em calls ‘em essential fatty acids.

Wow! Your head is full of fat and acid. It’s a wonder you can think at all.

But you can.

And you do. And here’s the actual reason I’m even talking about this. Certainly not because I’m a certified nutritionist. I don’t even play one on YouTube.

Nope. It’s because too many people believe everything happens for a reason. And that everything you do and think has already been planned and ordained by God.

He created brains. And He designed all those essential fatty acids that build vessels, nerves, and the rest. Everything you and I need for a functioning think zone. But God did NOT preload it with every thought you’d ever think. And here’s proof He’s the ultimate (infinitely wise) risk taker. He gave you the ability to think for yourself.

GASP!

I know. In most of today’s Christian circles that’s almost anathema (which isn’t a respiratory problem, btw). But consider this, because you CAN consider it. Your infinitely brilliant Creator wouldn’t build a fence He’d have to hold up. Surely that makes sense. So, why in the world would He create human beings that way?

Short answer?

He wouldn’t. He didn’t. And He doesn’t.

That means you and I are free to use our fatheads on our own. We can fill our think zones with whatever we prefer. And that’s why this world is SO messed up. Because most people fill their brains with hogwash (and that’s not even remotely related to bacon) and hate.

Only a fraction of humans chooses the road less traveled that leads to a narrow gate that leads to Heaven. The rest use their heads for a hat rack.

I know that’s not you. But maybe you know somebody who fits that description. If so, tell ‘em pump up their brains with some grass fed beef (and other good sources of essential fatty acids) and clear the crud out of their think zones. Because people love that kind of advice.

Or not.

Your think zone is all your own,
And God lets you decide
If you will use your own will
To choose what He supplied.

I can always use your support to help me keep the nearly 3000 posts I’ve shared on my website available to the world that needs to see and hear about the one, true, living, loving God of creation. I think about what she said, more often, these days.

I’m talkin’ about what my Grandmother said, as I sat on her front porch snapping green beans with her. It was during a couple of years when my brother and I lived with our Dad’s parents while he worked on setting up a new home life.

Dad and Mom divorced when I was about four and my brother was two and a half. Since he was given custody of us, he asked our Grandparents to take care of us, most of the time, so he could find another wife and someone who could be the “mother figure” in our lives. This was, of course, before feminism ruined so many households. But that’s another topic for another time.

Anyway…

Back to what my Grandmother said.

And I don’t think enough old people tell young people this stuff these days.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Despite the fact that it was decades ago. Grandmother sat on her porch chair, the metal clamshell style, with a large enameled metal bowl, full of green beans from their back yard garden, in her lap. I sat in the other chair with a smaller bowl in my lap. And we snapped green beans. And she talked while I listened.

“Enjoy this peaceful, wonderful day, and don’t take it for granted,” she said. “Because, one of these days, you might be my age and most of, or all of, the people you love will be gone for good.”

I remember thinking to myself, “Why do old people talk this way?” Of course, being a pre-schooler, I couldn’t have seen how Grandmother was speaking from experience. I was too young to grasp the depth of her advice. But, even a young age, I had enough respect for my elders to listen and pay attention.

And for some reason, I enjoyed snapping green beans.

Now, let’s fast forward to THESE days.

I’m about 10 years older than Grandmother was when she gave me that advice. And as of 2021, the fullness of her prediction came true. All those people I loved, except for my brother, are gone for good. In February, it’ll be three years ago already that Mom was the last to go.

They’re all gone.

But I’m one of the fortunate ones in this world. Because I have the hope of seeing them again. Because my Grandparents AND my parents believed in and trusted Jesus.

I know. At first you thought I was just gonna share a little of my good ol’ Americana story. But then I had to go and spoil it all by saying something about Jesus. (side note: for some reason Frank and Nancy Sinatra popped into my mind)

But here’s the thing.

I would never have any nostalgic stories to share if it wasn’t for Jesus. And neither would you for that matter. Because He created us. For crying out loud, without a Manufacturer, there are NO manufactured goods. Without a Designer, there’s no design. Without a Creator, there’s no creation. You get the idea. Right?

The image of sitting on the porch with my Grandmother came into my head after I read about a Christian brother whose wife died a couple of days ago. And this has recently happened with a couple of my other friends, too. Fortunately, each of them has the hope of seeing their wives again. And that hope is because of their faith in Jesus.

If you’re reading this without that kind of hope, I hope that changes for you very soon.

Because these days the end of this world is closer than you’ve ever known.

You don’t know, for certain, you’ll even make it to lunch. And without the hope of life after death, that uncertainty will only lead to torment. And even though most people in the world ignore the solution to that problem, it’s so easy to avoid. But the solution requires humility. The kind of humility that selfish people don’t wanna think about.

Humility that says there IS a God of creation, you’re NOT Him, and He IS the source of faith, hope, and love.

Most people who read what I write or listen to what I say already know this. But if you just happened to land on my website, or someone else sent you this message, maybe you need to hear that your problems DO have a solution. And if it makes sense and you want the problems solved, don’t put it off. Remember…

“Enjoy this peaceful, wonderful day, and don’t take it for granted. Because, one of these days, you might be my age and most of, or all of, the people you love will be gone for good.”

There’s no difference when going first to last.
Lord we need you like generations passed.

Night skies, grateful sighs, and the Prize

They say (whoever “they” are) that a picture is worth a thousand words. But, on the other hand, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. So, I guess it’s up to me to connect the words to the picture. And that’s what I do on a fairly regular basis. Just like the time (many seconds ago) when I saw a beautiful picture of night skies outlined by the northern lights somewhere up in Norway.

Those night skies were filled with light.

You could see countless stars from the top, darker edge of the picture, all the way down to the outline of the aurora borealis. And the lights, in the night skies, illuminated a quiet, basically uninhabited landscape of sparse trees and mostly virgin snow. A great photograph of beauty most people never see, in person, anymore.

I found the picture online where a woman shares many photographs like that. And most of the time she adds her own titles. Sometimes the combination of her title and the beauty of the picture inspires me to make the words and picture connection. That’s what happened early this morning with the picture you see in my glasses at the top of this article.

Here’s the result.

When Heaven Whispers

When Heaven whispers through night skies,
God’s children listen to the sighs
That freely flow up to the source
Of love Who keeps us on the course
Toward eternal love and light
Where there will never more be night
Or need for whispers through night skies
For those who ran to win the prize.

Yeah, I connected that picture to MY words. But, I also connected it AND my words to THE Word. That’s the prize link.

Believe in yourself OR the One who will give you More

Your eternal fate all comes down to your answer to one question. Who do you believe in? Do you believe in yourself? Or buddha, confucius, or the universe? There’s a mountain of evidence against them being good choices.

Of course, you’re free to believe in yourself.

Because you’re free to make your own choices in this life. You’re not pre-programmed by God to do what you do in, and with, your life. And that’s just one of the reasons I Have To Believe and trust Him. He gave me my own will.

I gotta sing about it for a bit, and then I’ll get back to my assertion…

Here’s the link to the video: (https://youtu.be/AuI9uX_qUIM)

Yeah, I believe so strongly about Jesus being the only way to eternal life, that I wrote a song called “Have To Believe”. Or, to say it another way, I must believe. Or I can’t help but believe. When you face off with irrefutable truth, you have two choices. Either you believe, or you continue to rebel against it just so you can maintain your status as god of your own universe.

I recommend you believe in the Creator. Not the creation

Your conscience tells you there’s a design in your world. There’s design throughout the universe. And even in the way the moon and sun are the perfect distance away from us. There’s design in the tiny cells inside your body. You feel it in your gut that I’m right. And that’s why it’s so important to know the right answer to the question.

Who do you believe in? Yourself? Or the One who designed you?

Design, at the very least, implies a designer. Christians call that designer, Jesus. He created everything there is. Notice I used the word “everything”. Every. Thing. Not every idea. Because He lets you come up with your own ideas.

Trouble is, you know us humans. We can come up with some awesome ideas and start getting the notion we’re the awesome ones. But, we can only manipulate what’s already been created. You and I don’t have the power to create one grain of sand from nothing.

Don’t feel bad. In fact, feel great. Because it’s great to know that the one, true, living, loving God of all creation loves you. He created you. And He wants you to live forever. You’re more important to Him than you can imagine.

And just so you know, it’s OK to believe in yourself when it comes to abilities and skills in this life. Just don’t take it so far you forget where you truly started.

Not for everyone, and yet, it’s the safest, surest bet

I guess it’s not for everyone. In fact, amazingly enough, most people don’t want it and don’t even wanna talk about it. But the promise of living forever sounds mighty appealing to me. I can barely imagine not having that hope. Not having the security that hope provides. And I have a vivid imagination.

But, obviously, it’s not for everyone.

Just take a few seconds and read social media threads, beyond what your friends say. And it won’t be long till you see someone’s attempt at mocking God or anyone who believes and trusts in Him. And many of the people who do that claim to be in favor of “diversity and tolerance.” Yeah, right.

On the one hand, I get why Christianity is not for everyone. After all, it’s not always easy to be made fully aware of your many shortcomings in this life. And just because you’re a Christian doesn’t mean you don’t struggle with selfishness. It was the original sin. So, it stands to reason if the first two, perfect people were selfish, I am too.

But I’m not fully selfish. And I’m not totally controlled by the power of sin. Because the Lord of creation has intervened on my behalf. So, there is good in me because His Spirit is in me.

And as long as I acknowledge I’m not nicer or smarter than God, this world can’t keep me down as I enjoy life’s:

  • smooth sailing,
  • trials and tribulations
  • growing up,
  • gaining knowledge,
  • building friendships,
  • awards and rewards,
  • challenges and failures,
  • clouds and sunshine,
  • joy and laughter,
  • pain and redemption, and
  • words and music

Yeah, I love life!

But even more than that, I love the source of life. If God didn’t exist, you and I wouldn’t exist. Simple as that.

And, sure, this place we’re in right now is amazing and difficult. But the next place will be unfathomably kinetic, energizing, and joyous. It will be unimaginably beautiful, sustaining, and buoyant. It’s gonna be full of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

But not for everyone.

That’s a shame because it’s easy to get there. Your ticket has been bought and paid. You just need to believe.

Not in “your dreams” or yourself. Or some metaphysical “force.” Certainly not in “the universe.” Or in the so-called “law of attraction.” And definitely not in Mohammed, Confucious, Buddha, Allah, or stupid political parties.

Only in Jesus.

The fate of your soul and spirit depends on Him. You owe it to yourself to discover why it’s so important? Don’t be part of the everyone who ignores the only One.

I love life and this chance to live it.
I’ve got news and I’m gonna give it
To the ones who’d like more of it.
Yeah, life is good. Don’t you just love it?!

Second best gift sure caused a shift

The second best gift God created inside me is music. It’s been a constant companion. Even through the years when I had no human constant companion. It’s been a reminder that I’m “wonderfully made.”

Music brings me internal and inexplicable joy. In, and through, my circumstances. Just as life is music to my ears, music is life to my ears. And the cup of gratitude, in my soul spirit, runs over. I want a song in my heart until my heart no longer beats. And forever after that. Yeah, that’s a mighty fine gift alright.

And that gift helped me buy, and share, a lot of other gifts over the years. Because I made a living, as a musician, for 25 years. And that’s despite the fact that I didn’t start out to play music for a living. But you could say music paid for my clothes, food, electricity, gasoline, gear, housing, and presents. In fact, I just said it. Plus, I got to see a LOT of America, and even parts of Canada and Mexico, as I traveled to “gigs.”

I met lots of nice people. And some not so nice. And I experienced a wide variety of cultural activities and preferences in the different sections of America. All because of the gift of music. And so much more.

But, as I said, it’s the second best gift.

Because the best gift is the Maker of music. And it’s only because of the love of Jesus that you and I can even hear music, much less enjoy it. I mean, think about it. He didn’t have to include music in the creation. After all, it’s not a necessity. You CAN live without it (although it doesn’t feel that way to a musician).

On second thought, is that really true? CAN you live without music? Or is it maybe, on some invisible, vibrational level, a key component to the building blocks of life. It can sure feel that way to a musician. And you see a multitude of references to music, musicians, and musical instruments in the Bible. So, it must be pretty important to God.

Well, I’ll leave you to speculate on that. After all, you’re free to choose what you think. It’s not as if God predestined you to like and enjoy music or not. As for me? I choose wisely the joy-giving gift of music.

Play sweet piano
And lose me inside you.
I know you will do that for me.
Let’s take a journey…we’ll fly,
And we won’t come back.
We’ll live in a sweet melody.

Stupid boy tricks that make me say “Nix”

An adult Christian man was a stupid boy on a social media channel early this morning. Because he wrote something stupid. And he writes a lot of things like this morning’s little jab. And I don’t why he’d say and do the things he does, in public, other than he likes picking fights with other Christians.

That’s why I said he was a stupid boy.

Because stupid boys pick fights. And it’s extra stupid for a Christian to do such things on social media for the whole world to see. And you can bet the whole world loves to see Christians arguing and airing their disagreements.

Just so you know. The guy’s blurb included a slight cut aimed at me and others like me. Here are his words:

”Don’t go with the crowd, even if that crowd is your church.
Go with God.
God isn’t pro family, pro life, political, a dispie.”

OK, the first two sentences are fine.

First one: “Don’t go with the crowd, even if that crowd is your church.” Yes, that’s true. The “crowd” is typically against God. So, don’t go with them. And many churches today follow the trends of the world. So, yeah, don’t go there either.

Second one: “Go with God.” Oh yeah, definitely. He’s your only hope.

And if the guy would’ve stopped there, or at least clarified his words, he could have avoided stupid boy syndrome. But then he followed up good stuff with stupid stuff. So, there you go.

Because God IS pro family. He is FOR family. And He Is pro life. He is FOR life. And God established government. So, He isn’t anti politics. I’m sure God hates what politics become when left in the hands of fools. But He wants you and me to live in a world governed by moral judgment based on real right and wrong. Government provides for that.

And then…

He implied God isn’t “a dispie.”

OK, that’s sort of an inside remark among Christians. Because if you’re a heathen…er…not a Christian, you might never have heard that term. It’s short for dispensationalist. I’m one of those pesky dispies. (side note: that word looks like someone who disses pies, and that would never be me)

A dispensationalist is someone who believes God has dealt with, is dealing with, and will deal with humans in different ways at different times. That’s the overview. And modern Christians didn’t make up the word. The apostle, Paul, even used the word in his letters.

Anyway…

I see so many church people who think of dispensationalists the way that guy does. And they even look at us, cross-eyed when we say we’re also young Earth creationists and open theists. That really drives ‘em over the edge. But, hey, the truth is the truth. Even when it rubs you the wrong way. Right?

Alright, I’m gonna finish out my miniature rant with something political. And I can only guess, of course, but I don’t believe God would be against my political position here. No matter who’s in charge of nations, give me…

God Over Government

Rights don’t come from government.
They only come from God.
Man’s words might acknowledge this,
But they can be outlawed.
No one here is sovereign.
And no one here is good.
And nations will disintegrate
Until that’s understood.
Truth will not prevail upon
The ones who choose to hate
The One who is the Truth, the Life,
The Way, and narrow Gate.
“Freedom isn’t free,” they say.
And you won’t disagree,
When you find out what it took
To bring you liberty.
The man-made “constitution,”
Amended to add rights,
Barely reflects the message
From the Father of lights.
He said perfect life awaits
For “who believes in Me.”
Choose God over government.
His Truth shall make you free.

Color of music there was anything but rare

What does it take to see the color of music? Well, take an old boom box, some music, paints, and an ultra slow motion camera, and you’ve got the ingredients for razzle dazzle. Check out this video:

Here’s the link to the colorful, slow-motion video in case that works better for you:

Yeah, I know that’s a multimedia way to illustrate the color of music.

Because music doesn’t actually have a physical color. Neither do words. But words and music (and many other sounds) can paint the most beautiful, colorful pictures in your head.

50 years ago, when I was even younger than I am now, I carried a 19 cents Bic pen and a spiral notebook with me everywhere I went. Because I wanted to be prepared, at all times, to write down any and all poetry that worked its way to the right side of my brain.

For the first eight months of that year I lived in a small town, of about 1500 people, in Eastern Kansas. (life sure can circle back on itself, but more about that some other time)

Anyway…

I remember a drive out into the Kansas countryside one Spring day after a rain. I had decided to take in the damp, fresh air, and rural scenery to see what ideas might spring up (see what I did there?). And I figured I was prepared to talk about fast-moving streams. Or fertile, green fields of grass. Or even rainbows of wildflowers.

But, instead, I pulled over and stopped next to an old country fence. There was sort of wide spot in the road, and there was no traffic, because, well, as I said, it was rural Kansas. And I rolled down the window and sat there listening to nature. No city sounds. No hustle bustle urban sounds. Only the hustle bustle (wow, I think that’s the most times I’ve ever said hustle bustle in one paragraph…nope, I just added another one) of birds and bugs and breezes.

Then, I saw it.

A drop of rain. At the very tip of a limb on young sapling. I wondered how the little drop could just hang on to that limb. Why didn’t it fall off? And then, a sun ray made its way into the little drop, and it started to shine out a tiny rainbow.

It was such a small, almost insignificant moment. But I knew I was the only person in the world who was ever gonna see that particular drop of rain on that particular limb. Yeah, I know that might not mean a darn thing to you. And you might even think it’s silly to place such emphasis on something that happens trillions of times every day.

But, even in the smallest things, I see ways to appreciate what a complex, yet simple, world God created for us. And, being a poet, it brings me great pleasure to write about as much of it as possible.

So, on that Kansas spring day, all those years ago, I thought about the color of music as I wrote…

Glisten

If you could listen to a glisten,
What do you think you would hear?
I think the sound that would be found
Would ring out sparkling clear.

Glisten is the happy sound of happy children
In their happy worlds.
What a joy to enjoy when curled-up glistens
Are uncurled.
Make for me a glisten I can hold inside my hand.
I could carry it with me, and
I wouldn’t need a band.

This is but a moment in our lifetime.
I’m a word and you’re a word, and we rhyme.
If we glisten along our paths,
Our paths will glisten too,
And if you glisten for me,
I know I’ll glisten for you.

Good deeds day the secret way

OK, let’s say it’s Good Deeds Day. And let’s say you’ve been a good deeds do-er. Now, what would you like as your reward? And who would you like to present that reward to you?

Or would you prefer that Good Deeds Day didn’t exist?

If you’re a Christian, I hope you stand firmly in the “didn’t exist” category. Here’s why.

Check out verses 1-4 of Matthew 6 in your red letter edition of the Bible. Because that’s where Jesus said don’t tell everyone about your charitable deeds.

It was important to Jesus that His followers understood this. So important He included it in His written word. And the topic of charitable deeds was important enough to be included with a list of these other topics:

  • Murder, Adultery, Divorce
  • Oaths, Retaliation, Love
  • Prayer, Fasting, Wealth, and
  • Judging

That’s a pretty serious list…right?

Jesus knew these were things each and every person would deal with in life, in one way or another. So He made sure to give us His (and His Father’s) perspective. And whose perspective has the most wisdom? His!

Jesus wants your good deeds to come from your heart. He wants it to be about loving your neighbor as yourself. And serving your fellow man. And just plain ol’ helping out, when you’re able and someone truly needs it.

He doesn’t want your giving to be about how good a giver you are. He knows when your focus is on what a good giver you are. And when your tendency is to focus on numbers and rewards, not loving your neighbor. Just read the stories in the Bible, or read the history of any country or civilization, and you’ll see it always ends up that way.

If you’re in a good financial position, and you have extra to give, pass it around as much as you cheerfully can. That’s awesome. But please don’t do it and tell everyone you did. In fact, it’s best if you don’t mention it to anyone.

Let every good deeds day be done in secret. And if there is any telling, let it be done by someone else. Trust that Jesus meant it. And that He knew it was true when He said God will reward you openly. It may not be until you’re in Heaven, but it WILL be.

So, give secretly. I believe your blessings will be richer.

Give To Gain

It’s a shame; it’s a crying shame
That so few ever stake their claim
To the life; to the life that’s free
F
rom the world and from iniquity.
What a choice, to be loosed or bound.
Plant your feet on the solid ground
And receive; and receive the Grace
Put the Light in your dark heart’s place.

Ain’t it funny how we give to gain?
But let’s follow the lead of the Creator of this earthly plane.
It’s a wonder how we give to gain.
But it’s really not giving; it’s the one way of living,
That we should learn to give to gain.

It’s a crime; it’s an awful crime
That the world thinks in finite time
With their hands stretching out to take.
And they reap another big mistake

Chorus

Live the only way of livin’
Give like you’ve been forgiven…

Chorus…inst…chorus to end

Faith in action where hope and love get traction

So, I found a website about an organization called “Faith in Action.” And I don’t think those words mean what the people in that organization think they mean.

Unless, of course, their faith in action is in themselves.

I haven’t read their entire website. And I probably won’t ever have time to do that. Just as they’ll never have time to read all of mine. Yeesh, who would? There are almost 3000 pages of me talking about stuff most people wouldn’t give a plug nickel to hear.

Anyway…

Just because I haven’t read their whole website doesn’t mean I don’t have a grasp on the flavor and intent of their “mission.” And that appears to be one of group-hug theology. For example, on one page they have a paragraph on something they call “Theology of Resistance Narrative Model.”

Here’s how they define that:

“At the heart of the Prophetic Resistance Project is a dialogue about how our multiple faith practices inform our shared struggle toward Beloved Community and against injustice and dehumanization. This dialogue occurs by way of the Theology of Resistance narrative and praxis model, a multi-faith approach that propels deep reflection on religious and spiritual identity, convictions, and experiences into prophetic action.”

And they finish it off with:

“The four key components of the Theology of Resistance model are: Encounter, Disruption, Reimagining, and Action.”

Wow, sounds like it came straight from one of the letters the Apostle Paul wrote. NOT.

And I didn’t see any information on their website about what they do to stand up for the rights of unborn/preborn babies. And no information about what they do to stand up for Christian liberty in lands where Christianity is increasingly persecuted.

Probably just an oversight.

Or maybe not since they make sure you understand their corporate status. Right on their website they say:

“Faith in Action is a 501c(3). Faith in Action and its affiliates are non-partisan and are not aligned explicitly or implicitly with any candidate or party. We do not endorse or support candidates for office.”

So, that means they’re not likely to ever embroil themselves in something so politically controversial as abortion. And even if they tossed their hats into that ring, I suspect they wouldn’t call for the abolition of abortion.

This post has taken quite a wry twist. Because I didn’t even start out with the intention to write about that knucklehead organization. In fact, I was only gonna share some of my thoughts about how faith, hope, love, and joy help inspire creativity. And through a series of searches, using those words, I stumbled upon that website.

But doggone it, I’m not gonna let that less desirable content rob me of my faith, hope, love, and joy. And I’m gonna go ahead and share a short poem I shared, in a wonderful picture, on a social media site. The person, who shared the picture, shares tons of amazing photographs. Most of them she adds her own title. And this one she called…

Sugar Coated Serenity

The road led to a magic place
With icy clouds of marmalade
In skies of azure butter mints
And honey-sweetened lemonade.
I found a house of chocolate
And nougat-filled divinity.
Faith, Hope, and Love are keys to this
Sugar coated serenity.

Celtic art directly from the heart

In 2009 I wrote AND produced 10 lullaby songs in 10 days. Those songs became my first collection of lullaby songs for kids called “Lullabye Bye.” And one of those songs was called “Blue Celtic Cloud.” And when I shared my Celtic art on CD’s, way back when, it turned out to be one of the more popular songs on the disk.

Here’s that musical Celtic art in a lyric video:

Here’s the url to that Celtic art, just in case text or video links don’t work for you:

And here are the lyrics, just in case you’d rather read before you decide to watch the video. (yeah, I know people who have to even research lyrics before they watch videos…go figure)

Blue Celtic Cloud

There’s a time in the spring and the last part of autumn
When the noise of the day goes away, and the world is not loud
If you lay down and listen, you might hear the music
Raining down from real high in the sky in a blue celtic cloud.

Oh…beautiful magical music…
Oh…finding its way to your heart…

Through the whispering trees the wind brings a message,
And it tells you to keep your eyes closed and keep your head bowed…
“˜Cause you have to be still to catch all the music
Raining down on your ears from the sky in a blue celtic cloud.

Oh…beautiful magical music…
Oh…finding its way to your heart…

One by one the notes float down
And form a song so you can’t frown…
So you smile and you laugh and you sing.
Then two by two and three by three
The notes begin their harmony.
Just lay back and enjoy everything.

© 2008

Get all the songs, from the Lullabye Bye collection, in one sing along, drawing, coloring book. It’s available on the world’s most popular “bookstore,” Amazon.

Here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/Lullabye-Bye-Tony-Funderburk/dp/B08BWFWSLN

And just so you know, Blue Celtic Cloud is the only Celtic art song. So, you don’t have to be Irish to enjoy. Although, if you ARE Irish, you might wonder where this guy has been your whole life.

Out there living is filled with misgiving

I’m gonna share something that’s really out there. And I mean this is extremely radical info. So put on your flack jacket, crash helmet, and seat belt. It’s gonna be a short, but bumpy ride.

Last warning. Are you dressed and ready to head out there?

OK. Here goes.

As I type this, it’s early Monday morning. I’ve been up since 2:42. But that’s another story. So, forget I mentioned it.

Anyway, it’s early Monday morning. And I know you’ve got plenty to think about today. So, here’s a question for you. How’s it gonna help you to worry about tomorrow, today? (spoiler alert: it won’t)

And that’s not just my opinion. Yeah, someone else talked about this long before I was even born. And you can find that information in red letters in the Bible. (You DO know red letters are used when it’s Jesus talking, right?) But more about that in just a sec.

Anyway…

As an illustration, think about tomorrow for a minute. It never really gets here. It’s always “out there.” Somewhere beyond the next sunrise. Somewhere in the future. The future is always coming. But it never really arrives. That’s because it hasn’t happened yet. And when the future does happen, it’s today. Not out there in the future.

Ow, I’ve got a headache just thinking about that conundrum.

Today is the only day you can actually do anything about. Tomorrow isn’t here yet, and yesterday is over and done with. (Yeah, I ended a sentence with “with.” So, sue me.) And since today is the only time you actually live in, shouldn’t your focus be on what you can do today? That should be a rhetorical question, but sadly too many people are so fearful of what’s out there in the future they let today slip away.

And when today slips away, what does it become? Tomorrow? Nope. It immediately becomes yesterday. A saying I coined many years ago is this: “Today is yesterday’s tomorrow and tomorrow’s yesterday.” Feel free to pass that on, but be sure and give me credit so I can continue to feed my family on all those royalties.

Wow…time is really a weird thing, isn’t it? When Jesus said “do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things,” He highlighted the futility of worrying about tomorrow. It’s so futile, in fact, you should let tomorrow worry about itself. Hmm, can a tomorrow do that? Well, I’m not gonna worry about it. How about you?

Here are the lyrics to a song a young guy sang that expressed his misgivings about the future.

Tomorrow Never Came To Me

I saw a bluebird fly across the sky,
And I closed my eyes to listen.
Where was the pretty song I longed for?
The silence was unending.
It was one of those days
When everything is gone.
No one seems to care,
And nothing’s going on.

Oh, and it’s just so hard to see
Why tomorrow never ever came to me.

Feels like a lifetime in a moment’s space,
And I can’t understand.
How can the time pass by and leave you drained
Wishing for a chance?
The things you want to do
Are plans that just fall through.
The pieces just don’t fit.
You lose them bit by bit.

Oh, and it’s just so hard to see
Why tomorrow never ever came to me.

Third day, third year, and she’s not here

This is the third day, in three years, that she’s not here. And she’s not coming back. And I certainly don’t blame her. Because why would she even want to?

OK, I’ll clear up the third day reference.

And instead of sounding vague and secretive, I’ll just share the short story of her life that I shared a couple of years ago. Then, you’ll see who I’m talking about and why this “third day in three years” is significant.

1938. It was a cold day in January. In rural Oklahoma. FDR was in the first year of his second term as president of the U.S. And a second daughter was born to a young couple named Lee and Syona. But it was also a time when America was still struggling to recover from the Great Depression. So, when the little family was ready to travel, they piled into their big car and headed west to California.

That cold day in Oklahoma turned to west coast warm.

And the young couple got jobs doing what countless other migrant workers did. They picked produce and fruit from the fertile California farms and orchards.

But times were tough.

And even the Golden State didn’t provide enough work and wages for Lee and Syona to take “proper care” of their two daughters.

So, they sent Donette, the oldest, and Doris, who was 2 years younger, back to Oklahoma to stay with their maternal grandparents. And Poodle and Poppy, as the kids called the old couple, were happy to take them in to their home “on the farm.”

There would be multiple trips back and forth between parents and grandparents. And there would be hardships far beyond what many Americans would call hardships these days.

Hunger from sometimes only one small meal a day. Worn out clothes. Barefoot walks to school because there wasn’t enough money for shoes. And every day life in shantytowns.

But, as life often turns out, the young sisters made it through those hard times. With the loving help of Poodle and Poppy. But both girls yearned to venture out on their own. And, while they were still kids (young teens) themselves, they both married and started having children of their own.

(You might be thinking, “What’s this got to do with a third day in three years?”)

OK, from this point on, the story will focus on Doris.

She married a young man named Dwight. They both lived in Norman, Oklahoma at the time. And, before long, they had two boys. They were the typical young couple adding to the baby boomer population. But their own youthful inexperience proved too much of a hurdle for them cross together. And they divorced, after only 4 years.

So, on another cold day, Doris started looking for her next step.

After some bumps and stumbles, she found and married a young man named Bill. And after a stint in the Army, Bill went to work for General Motors in the Kansas City area. He and Doris also had two kids. A girl and then a boy. And the two boys from Doris’ first marriage would join the four of them each summer in their home in rural Kansas.

And that life went on for several years until the two older boys graduated high school and left to start their own lives. Sadly, Bill and Doris began to drift apart till one day they also divorced. They hammered out the details for the care of their two younger kids. And they went their separate ways.

Once again Doris faced a “cold day” on her own.

I’d like to tell you her life rebounded onward and upward like a comeback story in an old Hollywood movie. But, for years, quite the opposite was true. And I won’t dwell on the dreary details. Just know that there were considerable obstacles for her to overcome. Some she created with her own choices. And others were thrust upon her.

After a couple more seriously broken dreams, Doris trained for restaurant management. And she worked her way through Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Kansas. Either as a manager or assistant manager for restaurants like Village Inn and Sambo’s.

Usually it was to be near one or more of her kids and grandkids.

After years in the restaurant business, Doris became a dispatcher for a transportation company based in the Kansas City area. And she lived and worked there until she retired and moved into her tiny, one bedroom apartment in the small community of Gardner, Kansas.

And she remained in Gardner until early 2021.

Her health declined for several years leading up to that time. And one morning, on a walk from her bedroom to the living room, she fell, injured her head, and required several stitches.

She bounced back somewhat. But then she dealt with more frequent bouts of headaches and dizziness.

Then, on January 8th of 2021, one day after her 83rd birthday, Doris suffered a stroke. And her health and stamina began to slowly deteriorate until she died in her sleep, a little over a month later, in her daughter’s home.

She is survived by her four kids, 10 grandkids, 6 great-grandkids, and 4 great-great-grandkids.

And I shared some of her story with you because she was my Mom. She died February 11, 2021. And today would have been her 86th birthday here on Earth. But it’s the third birthday she has enjoyed in Heaven. I have that assurance because I know she put her faith in the One who, long ago, rose on the third day to show us eternal life is real.

Dorsie, as she was affectionately called by family and friends, will be remembered as a Mom, Memaw, Great-grandma, sister, aunt, and friend who always finished her good-byes with “I love you.”

And we all love you, too.
Your gracious love shone through
The darkest days, like songs of praise,
To those you loved and knew.

I can hardly believe it’s already been almost 4 years. But the calendar doesn’t lie. And the metadata in the documents I saved doesn’t either. Yeah, almost 4 years since I produced rough cuts to several new songs. And I have a couple of main reasons why I call them “rough cuts.” One of those songs is called “I Can Do.” And, yes, it’s one of the many songs I’ve written where I swim upstream against current trends. But so be it.

It’s part of my job description to swim upstream against the trends of the world.

And, no, I don’t get some sort of surreptitious pleasure from going against the grain. In fact, I wish my worldview and songwriting style were more the norm. But that ain’t gonna happen. So I know those opportunities I passed up on, back in the day, for recording deals, are the only ones I’ll ever have.

But I know the One who created me, AND made sure I can live forever, is much more pleased with my choice. And He said the world hated Him before it ever hated me. So, I’m in the best of company.

Anyway…

Back to those songs. There are seven of them. So far. And I have a deep and abiding desire to produce them from rough cuts to smooth. But, to my constant consternation, for six years, respiratory issues have kept me from accomplishing that goal. And my wife and I have moved to two entirely different parts of the country to hopefully help alleviate those issues.

Right now I’m gaining some cautious optimism that maybe I’m making some progress (Your prayers are desired and appreciated). And I hope I can do some recording, soon, and make some tracks. Sadly I’ve had that hope dashed against the rocks a few times in the past six years. But the thing about real hope is, it springs eternal.

So, that being said, here’s a snippet of lyrics from a little song in B flat called…

I Can Do

Outside the lines the grass is greener.
But that will not change my demeanor.
Because my life runs like a river.
I’ll take what all my days deliver.

I know the morning sun will shine,
And so, I’ll draw another line.
I’ll keep a box of all my most important things
Inside my heart where they can be
A constant song of joy to me.
I love the sound of optimism when it sings.

I can do…what I need to. I know it’s so, so I can do!

The rest is reserved for when I fully produce this song and the others. Until then, you can dive into lots of my other songs, AND all kinds of books, when you click or tap this link:
