You’ve probably heard or read some version of this. Small minds talk and think about people. Average minds talk and think about things. And great minds talk and think about ideas.
Well, today I decided to think about things.
But I don’t believe that automatically means I have no more than an average mind. In fact, I think it puts me in infinitely good company. Because I remembered it’s God who created all things. And He did it through Jesus Christ. So, my guess is that He had to think about those things before He could create them. Can I get an amen?
And before you try to figure out a way to correct me, I realize God didn’t create mediocre things like we humans do. No, He created all the materials needed to make everything you and I can make. And by materials, of course, I mean dirt, water, breathable air, trees and all the other plants, animals, fish, birds, and human beings. Whatever He thought was good to create, He spoke the words and created them.
But make no mistake. God thought about things before He created them. (side note: the implication there is that he is not outside of time because he did things before, and after, and there must be time in order for that to happen)
OK, let’s get past that rabbit trail and go on another one. A few years ago, I wrote a rhyme for kids and posed a brain challenge for them. I said this…
Quick! Before anything else happens to distract you…think about nothing.
You can’t do it, can you? If you think you can, then you just thought about something.
And that proves you can’t think about nothing.
Oh no, it feels like we’re going in circles.
If you think about it (ha ha), there’s really no such thing as nothingness. So you couldn’t think about it even if you could think about it. Because if there really wasn’t anything, then there wouldn’t be you, and you couldn’t be here challenge your brain this way.
Are you starting to get a headache from all this brain strain? Well, that’s because you’ve got something in your thoughts. Yeah, it might not be huge or important. But there IS something there. So, since we’ve already figured out you can’t think about nothing, take a few seconds more to…
Think about nothing
As fast as you can.
Then try to make up
A fantastic plan
With all those thoughts
About nothing you thought.
Then, what will you do?
Well, nothing…that’s what.
‘Cause nothing is nothing
You can think about.
It doesn’t exist
So you can’t leave it out.
Oh, all of this thinking
Makes my head feel light.
So I’ll think about nothing…
