Life is full of up’s and down’s. But that’s part of what makes it so interesting. Because it’s not the easy stuff that makes you stronger. It’s the tough stuff. And if you’ve lived longer than a couple of decades, you’re at least starting to see what I mean. Right?

Tough stuff is available everywhere.

I remember way, way back in the 1980’s, I lived in the Atlanta, Georgia area. And, just in case you didn’t know this, they have a famous 10k run every year. It’s called the Peachtree Road Race. And it goes through sections of Atlanta that include some fairly good-sized hills. So, it’s a good challenge. And I decided to take it on.

And so, I went out and bought my expensive, fancy schmancy running gear. Oh wait. No, I didn’t. I just put on my basic blue sweatshirt and sweat pants, pulled a pair of running shorts over them, slipped on my basic sneakers, and took off from my apartment to go run the neighborhood.

It was January. And I started training then because the 10k run would be around the 4th of July. So, I knew I’d need months to prepare. So, like I said, I left my apartment for the first run.

There was a small school nearby, with a running track. And I figured going around in circles for a while would be a better start than trying to tackle the hills right away. So, I headed over there. And the track was covered with about three inches of snow, the kind that gets a slightly crunchy shell on top. But I started running in crunchy circles, and after about three laps, I had a smoother surface.

After about two weeks of running on the track, I decided I needed a change of scenery.

So, I took off for a run through the extended neighborhood. And it was going well enough until I turned one corner and faced “the monster.”

“The Monster” was a steep neighborhood hill that was close to the beginning of my run. In other words, before I even got warmed up there it was. And the first time up it was slow. Like S. L. O. W. slow. But I struggled through and made it to the top. Then, a large section of the run was either level or somewhat downhill.

And I didn’t like that setup.

At first.

But after days, then weeks, of tackling that hill I noticed something mighty cool. I wasn’t struggling to barely make it up the monster. In fact, I conquered the monster with a bounce in my steps. Take that, monster!

Then, I noticed something else. Without much of a conscious decision I started running further (or was it farther?) And each week I’d add to my mileage. Because that 10k (aka 6.213712 miles) was the goal. I didn’t want to just “make it through” the Peachtree Road Race. I wanted to run it, finish with a smile, get my accomplishment t-shirt, and have plenty of fuel left for anything else I wanted to do that day.

So, I trained. And I ran every day. Even when it rained or snowed (which was only a couple of times in Atlanta) or started getting hot and humid. And I added the miles until it was no big deal to run 6 miles. Or even more.

And I got to that point some people call the “runner’s high” or the “second wind.” That was awesome. I could run till I got my second wind, and then it felt like I could run for however long I wanted. And it felt grrrreat!

And I owed it all to “The Monster.”

Because the tough stuff made me tough enough to reach and surpass my goals.

So, I think that’s a little example of why Paul told the Philippians (and you and me) to keep pressing on toward the goal for the prize. But he wasn’t talking about some dumb t-shirt. He said the prize is the “upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” And that ain’t 10k. That’s solid gold.

Reach out through the tough stuff.
Press on through the pouring rain.
And you’ll find enough stuff
To turn your loss into gain.

Stay tuned,

Manliest man with a Love Plan

“Why do you write so much about love, Tony? It’s not exactly a manly topic.” Yeah, I’ve been asked that. And when I hear a question like that, I immediately think, “Hmm…sounds like somebody who hasn’t read the Bible.” Because the manliest man who ever lived talked about love. And I mean, talked about it a lot.

Manliest man with a Love Plan

And before I go any further, the manliest man who ever lived never made an action movie.

Or a superhero movie. And he never got any TV series offers. And he never entered any of those ironman competitions or long-distance running marathons.

Plus, there are no records of him ever starting any core workout classes. And he didn’t have any nutritional or health and wellness endorsements. But there’s not a shred of doubt that no man before or since was or is manlier. Because no man, before or since, endured or ever will endure the incredible torture this man had to endure.

“Uh-oh, honey. I think I see where Tony’s going with this.”

Yeah, this manliest of men I’m talking about…who talked a lot about love…just so happened to be your Creator.

And even if you don’t believe in Him, or trust Him, or love Him, He laid down His life for you. The only eternal, sinless, perfect life that’s worthy enough to pay off your mountain of debt. And mine, too.

He even said it like this, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”

In this time in history, when so many would rather murder than lay down their life for a friend, that’s quite a contrast.

So, before you lose the love that saves your life,
And before you turn your back on your Creator,
Look into the evidence that’s all around you.
Do it now because it might be too late, later.

Stay tuned,

How To Pray 3 Times Better

You’re a weak, little thing. Even if you can do a dozen pull-ups, a hundred push-ups, or even a thousand sit-ups. And even if you can run 25 miles, or bike 100 miles, or swim the English channel…you’re still a weak, little thing. If you compare yourself to other people, you might think you’re pretty strong. But when you compare yourself to Jesus, you’re not all that…or even a bag of chips. Sometimes you’re so weak, you don’t even know what to pray when you talk to God. But luckily your prayers can be 3 times better than you can even imagine. And that’s even when you don’t have a clue what to say.

Wanna know how to pray 3 times better?

There’s a place in the Bible where it says God knows how weak we are. He knows we don’t even know what to pray like we should. But that’s where the power of three comes in. Jesus searches your heart. And He knows you don’t always know how to say what’s in your heart. When you pray to God with your whole heart, Jesus knows it. So, even if you don’t say things very well, His Holy Spirit helps make your prayer sound and work better. Then your prayer is lifted up according to God’s will.

Just think…it’s like having your own interpreter. Your weak words get changed into a strong message. And the Creator of the universe hears you and understands you. And He loves to hear from you. So…don’t ever think you shouldn’t pray to God just because you don’t know what to say. Each day just tell Him you love Him. Even if you can’t think of a new way to say it, tell Him that, too. And because God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are there for you, your prayer will be 3 times better than you think.

Will you give it try today? Here’s a rhyme to help you remember…

Life in God is three times better
Than anything this world might show.
If you’re glad that Jesus loves you,
Then pray today and tell Him so.

Stay tuned,
