Nothing really matters as existence scatters

Hey kiddos! Have you read or heard someone say, “If matter’s all there is, then nothing really matters.” Whether you’ve heard or read it or not, I’m the one who said it. And I said it for a very good reason. Because you’re the only you. But, come to think of it, who cares? Right?

If nothing really matters, then neither do you.

Because you’re nothing more than a bunch of carbon cells clumped together in a weird shape. You’re obviously not as cute a puppy. Because nothing is. You’re not as helpful as a tree. Because trees can provide shade, fuel, and even materials to build shelter. And you’re not as essential as water. Because, “scientists” say water is the source of life.

So, Mister Man, or Missy Miss, you just don’t stack up so much, do you?

Nope. You’re just gonna live out your life and be gone one day. And nobody’s gonna miss you. And it’ll be like you were never here. Born one day. And back into an eternal black, empty hole before you know it.

Wow. That’s sad and hopeless.

So, I hope it’s not how life seems to you. And I hope there’s no one teaching you that foolishness.

You DO matter. And your story matters. Because you, my fine-featherless-friend, were created. Nope, you didn’t just happen. And your story is written inside the cells of your body. It’s like a secret code, only it’s not a secret anymore.

Your code is yours and no one else has the your code. It’s what makes you who you are. And it’s the reasoning behind why you look and sound the way you do And this is true of every person on the earth. Big or little. Fat or skinny. Blue or pink.

It’s kinda like this:

Let’s say we could get a special decoder ring. And we use it to read the code inside of you. Then, we could read the one book in the world written just about you. Sorta like the owner’s manual to your body.

It would tell us why your singing voice is so nice. Or why you can’t carry a tune in a bucket. It would tell us how you grew up to be a 7 foot basketball player in the NBA. Or a 5 foot jockey in the Kentucky Derby. Of course, your code wouldn’t tell us how you won a spot on a team in the NBA. And it wouldn’t show us how you won the Kentucky Derby. But it would show us why you’re tall or short.

And those tiny instructions are in each of the trillions of cells in your body. So, just imagine how many other things we could learn by reading all your information.

Yeah, thank goodness you and I don’t believe that nothing really matters. And that’s how we know that…

Your Story Matters

Inside a trillion tiny cells
Where no one’s eyes can see…
A trillion times your story flies
On sparks of energy.

That energy is life itself
The fire to light your way
To write your story and to live
And love someone today.

Be thankful for your source of life
And bow or smile and nod…
Because your story matters most,
When it reveals our God.

Your email address matters, too. It’s what I need so I can send you my Tony’s Rhyme and Reason Daily Devotional. Get lots of fun stuff delivered right to your inbox. More than matter or primal batter

You’re more than matter. And you matter because of that. Not because of the color of your skin. Not because of how much money you have or where you were born. And not because you’re the most perfect specimen ever conceived here on planet Earth.

Your significance is measured by the highest standard in existence. God’s love and wisdom.

He created you in His image. And He created you on purpose. You live because He lives. And that gives you more meaning than you’ll ever fully understand or comprehend this side of Heaven.

You ARE going to Heaven, aren’t you? In case you didn’t know, life carries on way past what you and I can see here and now. Even though your body doesn’t last forever, you do. That’s another part of why your life has meaning. God designed you to be eternal. He doesn’t create humans to be here today and gone tomorrow. Be truthful with me, now.

Somewhere inside, you know that you’re more than matter. Right?

It can be easy to feel lost in the hustle and bustle of this big ol’ world. Especially with all the technology around you. You’re constantly bombarded with news, entertainment, and social media.

Ads and gossip would have you think you need bling and swag to amount to something. You don’t.

Because your worth was determined by the Creator of the universe when He formed you in your mother’s womb. He gave you self-awareness. And the capacity to learn and discover more about Him.

So, if you have a thirst and hunger to know how and why you’re so much more than matter, or even if you’re satisfied to explain away your existence on random chance, here’s what I suggest.

Random chance indoctrination gives you that feeling of insignificance. Not creation. If you and I are only here as a result of trillions of beneficial mutations, then there really IS no purpose to life. It just is. And then it isn’t.

But here’s something much better.

The one, true, living, loving God created you with purpose, meaning, and eternity written on your heart. So, own that knowledge. Because it can lift you up in times of trouble. And when you understand your Creator will never leave you nor forsake you, it gives you strength to carry on when others give up hope.

And as you carry on, you can show others how their lives have meaning too. You can show them how life can go on forever. At least it will for those who love and seek God. Those who don’t will feel more like the guy in this poem from 48 years ago. It was written from the perspective of a 20 year old guy who questioned the meaning of life.

Ashes In A Breeze

Where was I when I thought this up?
I was staring into a coffee cup.
I thought I’d write the things I felt
So the cold inside my heart would melt.
I’m a peaceful man, and I love the world,
And once or twice I’ve kissed a girl.
I lead a life that carries on,
But something’s missing. Something’s wrong.

I’ve looked into ashtrays before
And never really thought anything,
But now I see the ashes inside,
And they represent everything.

My life is passing by like ashes in a breeze.
It’s like there is no meaning. Maybe I’m hard to please.

Ashes in a breeze?
Sounds like a phrase I’ve heard before,
But emptiness stays with me.
It fits me more and more.
And more and more I’m looking
Into empty coffee cups,
Seeing a reflection and trying to wake up.
If I should ever make
Another meaning for myself,
I’ll erase the cruel reflection,
And put the cup back on the shelf.
