No other person is you so be you through and through

Back in 2013 (hard to believe that’s already ten years ago) I challenged myself to write rhymes for kids 100 days in a row. And I met that challenge. I received a lot of positive feedback for most of the rhymes. And I didn’t get any negative feedback. Which is good. Because there would have been serious repercussions. Just kidding (sorta). One of the rhymes was called “No Other Person.”

I got a couple of comments that said it’s very “pro life.” And that’s not surprising. Because ALL my rhymes and reasons are pro life. Obviously any other perspective is stupid. And I know just saying “stupid” makes even a lot of Christians uncomfortable because they “feel like” it’s too harsh. But that’s how the truth is sometimes.

Anyway…

I didn’t mean to head out in that direction. Because I’m feeling a lot more lighthearted than that today. Yeah, I wanted to re-share that poem/rhyme with you. Because people have commented how much they enjoy the rhymes I write for the kiddos. So, if that’s not you, feel free to tune out and go back to some dreary TV if you like.

But, for the rest of you, here’s that pro life rhyme for the kiddos again:

No Other Person

Once upon a time you were one little cell
Living in your mom where you formed so well.
Then you were born and everyone knew
There was no other person who was quite like you.

You got bigger and you wondered why
A fish could swim and a bird could fly.
Every little thing was a fun, little game.
A dog was a friend, and you gave it a name.

A little more time, and you learned to read.
Each word was a friend that planted a seed
That formed an idea in your curious mind.
Then your need for knowledge left the kid behind.

That was well and good, and it had to be.
There was so much more in the world to see.
But please remember and don’t forget…
There are things in life that you might regret.

Don’t let love ever take a back seat.
Be willing to share it with whomever you meet.
Then, people might say, when you’re life is through,
There was no other person who was quite like you.

One person matters even when wisdom scatters

When you stand for something that’s not popular, or goes against the collective grain, it can be easy to think you’re all alone. Or that your influence isn’t enough. But, if that describes you, here’s a little inspiration to show you how one person matters.

Back in 1800’s a 41 year old woman sure found out that one person matters.

She was the daughter of a president of Lane Theological Seminary. And she taught at another school that was established by her own sister. So, you could say “higher education” ran in the family. And she was definitely no dummy.

Her activities in the school where she taught included much more than teaching. She provided stories and sketches to local journals (kind of like newspapers) and a school geography until 1836.

Then, in 1836, she married a clergyman and seminary professor in Cincinnati. Fortunately for her (and eventually a lot of other people) he encouraged her writing. In 1843 she published a work called “Sketches of Scenes and Characters Among the Descendants of the Pilgrims.

As it just so happened, during her 18 years in Cincinnati, she lived just across the Ohio River from a slave-holding community. And she actually made contact with fugitive slaves. Plus, she learned about life in the South from some friends. She even made some visits down South.

But in 1850 her husband took a professor’s position at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. So, of course, they moved there. Sometime, during those days, she read quite a bit of slavery abolitionist literature. And with that information, and her own observations, she started writing a “long tale of slavery” which was published as a series in a periodical called the National Era.

That was an antislavery paper in Washington, D.C.

Despite what you might have heard about “white people” and their racist attitudes, her writings became a very popular book. In fact, it was described as an “immediate sensation.” Abolitionists whole-heartedly embraced the book AND her.

But, as you might guess, people who still wanted to own slaves considered it basically a crime to even read her book. Yeah, it was extremely dangerous to have a copy of the book. Yet, in spite of that, 300,000 copies of the book were sold in its first year.

It was even translated into a play and performed to “capacity audiences.” So, she became quite the attraction in literary circles. And she was even “enthusiastically received” on a visit to England in 1853.

To say her book had a polarizing effect on the subject of slavery is a huge understatement. In fact, there’s a mighty good chance you already know the shortened name of her famous book.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Harriet Beecher Stowe led a writer’s life. And she penned many other works. Even a small volume of religious poems (a woman after…or should it be, before…my own heart).

And Harriet didn’t advocate for the regulation of slavery. No, her position was that it must be abolished. Because she understood the value of every human being. She knew that even one person matters.

And she proved that with her bold writing.

My guess is that if Mrs. Stowe were alive today, she’d be at her desk, right now, writing about the need to abolish abortion. Because my guess is that she understood that human beings are human beings from the moment they’re conceived. So, I bet she would want to protect the unborn ones from all those adults who would rather murder them.

Of course, I’m only guessing. But her track record makes a good case. I bet I’m right about her.

Anyway…

I thought it would be interesting to share a little info about the writer of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Because it just so happens that she died on this date, July 1, back in 1896. And many people still know who she is all these 127 years later. That’s how much one person matters.

You should thank your Mom
‘Cause she thought of you as a person.
From the very start
She was calling you her daughter or her son.

Stay tuned,

Gender inclusive is so gender intrusive

Anyone who knows me knows I’ve always been a big admirer of women. I appreciate ’em so much, in fact, that I married one 31 years ago. But, as usual, women are at the heart of a Yuge problem. And many of them, if not most, don’t seem to care to even try to fix it. Of course, by now, I’m sure you’ve guessed what that problem is. Right? Yeah, if we don’t get more gender inclusive mighty quick, I hate to think of where this world is headed.

And it’s glaringly apparent women are the least gender inclusive.

I mean…c’mon. Just look at the word, women. Or even the singular form, woman. Are you kidding me? They’ve got the words, men and man, in them. In fact, they wouldn’t even be words without men and man. How inclusive is that?

I guess it’s not the fault of women. I mean, after all, if you’re a woman, I’m sure you didn’t come up with that word for yourself. Because if it was up to you, wouldn’t you come up with a word that’s more inclusive of the many wonderful forms and personalities you guys…er…ladies…uh…people are?

Maybe you’re not sure what other word you could use. Well, never worry, never fear. Tonyman is over here. With a solution that makes so much sense, I can’t imagine why no one thought of this before.

Just leave the men and man out.

I can virtually hear the cheers building up inside of the “people” who are already ahead of me on this. Yeah, leave the men and man out. And from now on go with Wo.

Think about it. When a man first sees a beautiful woman, he thinks to himself (or says out loud) “Wo!” Right? And when a woman says something a man doesn’t agree with or can’t understand (which is so rare, by the way), he thinks to himself (or says out loud) “Wo, now wait a minute!”

And when a man believes all his troubles are the direct result of that woman he’s with, he thinks to himself (or says out real loud), “Oh wo is me!”

Plus…this should be the final straw for you as a woman…uh, Wo. Just in case you didn’t know it, you’ve been called a woman all this time because…get this…a man said so.

“Say it ain’t so, Wo!”

But it is. Adam stuck Eve with that gender exclusive label. And you women…uh Wo’s, have been forced to endure it ever since.

So, I say, free yourself from the shackles of the men and man. Not as an order from me. Just a suggestion. Because I’d never wish to enslave you with a noun you didn’t choose.

And to all the men I say, “Go with the Wo.
You can free yourself, too. ‘Cause you just don’t know
When you might get the chance to make it all right.
Avoid that shoulder with the low fahrenheit.”

Here are the lyrics to the song included in this episode:

Choose Life

Well you hid your heart in a so-called safe place,
Then you locked your love in a big, black box,
And you had no hope, but you built your brave face,
And you ran your rat race…through the tics and tocs.

Well, the bluebells bloomed in ideal intentions
As you tilled the truth into lifelong lies,
And you dug in deep making many mentions
Of your pretty pensions…always alibis.

You can’t run away from real truth.
And every word of truth is a knife.
A captivating voice might pigeonhole your choice,
Cut free…and choose life.

When your daydreams die and you feel half-hearted,
And your love is lost in a soulless sky,
Try to train your thoughts when your brain’s bombarded
By the stuff you started”learn to love the lie.

Chorus

Choose life…choose life…choose life
