Maybe you have some in your house right now. Or, at the very least, you’ve had it at some point or seen it in somebody else’s house at some point in your life. Of course I’m talking about refrigerator art. Those “adorable” drawings, scribbles, or splotches that little kids create and parents and grandparents display on the fridge.
Yeah, refrigerator art is an American tradition.
Maybe people and other countries do it too. But, for sure, it’s been a big part of Americana for as long as I can remember. And that’s quite a long time.
A few years ago I wrote about a very popular form of refrigerator art. Finger painting. The great thing about finger painting is it’s just an extension of your hand. So, it’s a direct extension of what’s going on in your head. You don’t have to think of things like brush size and technique. You just start moving the paints around with your fingers and right away you’re making masterpieces. Well, refrigerator masterpieces anyway.
So, if you have kids or grandkids, here’s an idea. If you haven’t already done so this week, get some cheap paper, some washable watercolors, and some eager, little fingers.
Soon your little Picassos and Rockwells will be finger painting something you’ll never want to throw away. Even though you will.
Finger Painting
Somewhere on the canvas
Is a painting you can find,
If you can swish the colors
Like the colors in your mind.
All it takes are fingers
And a smile and some supplies…
Soon you’re finger painting
With some sparkles in your eyes.
Blend some blues and yellows
And a little purple, too.
Add a little water
Just to see what it will do.
Now, you’re making magic
With your very own two hands
