If you’re a parent or family on a budget, you probably like seeing that familiar sign: Kids Eat Free. But what if you took them into a restaurant where the free food was a mud pie recipe? I bet free wouldn’t look so good.
There’s no mud pie recipe good enough for kids to eat free.
I spent my growing up years mostly in Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. And I can tell you, from experience, there’s a fair amount of variety in the dirt you can find across those states. Plus, they each get plenty of rain. So, it’s easy for kids to come up with a good mud pie recipe.
But a good mud pie recipe don’t make a good mud pie. Because, well c’mon, it’s still mud. And there ain’t enough shuga in the world to make mud taste like pie. Give me grass-fed beef any day. Every day.
But, a few years ago, I decided to write a rhyme about a kid’s favorite restaurant where kids eat free and no one orders for ’em. And I figured they might come up with some wacky ideas if they’re the only ones who get to choose what’s on the menu. So, that became the grand opening of…
The Mud Pie Café
The soup’s on gang
And the kettle’s big.
There’s enough for all
To eat like a pig.
So head on down
It’s not far away.
Everybody’s at
The Mud Pie Café.
The food’s made fresh
When it rains real hard
And the mud’s real good
In our own back yard.
All kids eat free.
No one has to pay.
