Yeah, in the so-called “criminal justice system” they like to say, “Three strikes and you’re out.” It’s almost always just tough talk with no bite. No action. Until they apply it to Christians. Then, there’s lots o’ barking and biting. And, in that arena, I already have four strikes against me.
My four strikes are that I’m:
- Straight,
- White (I prefer to say somewhat lighter skinned because I ain’t white)
- Christian, and last but not least,
- Old
Two of those strikes are by choice. And two are strikes I have no control over (or you could say, over which I have no control). Nope, I didn’t choose to be “white.” And there’s nothing I could have done to stop the aging process. Unless, of course, you prefer suicide to getting older. And, despite a growing infatuation with euthanasia, I don’t.
Anyway…
I noticed a trending news flash, about somebody named Hillary Clinton, on X (formerly Twitter) this morning. So, I clicked on some of the posts and comments. And I saw a video clip of her warning against the rise of Christianity and Christian nationalism. She said, “The idea you could turn the clock back and try to recreate a world that never was, dominated by – let’s say it! White men of a certain persuasion, certain religion, certain ideology, it’s just doing such damage to what we should be aiming for!”
First strike: turn back the clock on history, and you see America definitely WAS built on Christian principles. And, sure the country was dominated by “white men” (and women). Just like much of Africa is still dominated by black people. India is dominated by darker skinned people.
Second strike: Yes, the men, who founded America, were of a certain persuasion. They were straight, i.e. real men.
Third strike: And they were mostly Christians who believed in the necessity to establish a sovereign nation.
Now, of course, those strikes do “such damage” to what Ms Clinton stands for.
And that’s a good thing. Trouble is, most Americans, including Christians, don’t give her much to worry about. Because tolerance and forgiveness dominate the current Christian worldview.
But your favorite Rhyme and Reason writer, with four strikes against him, wrote a song about this 35 years ago. It said:
Spoon-feed the apathy and watch it grow into the cold hard truth,
And if you never care, then you will never know…
It’s such a cold hard truth…cold hard truth! © 1991 TF
