After I had been singing for a while, as a young dude, I started daydreaming. Maybe one day I’d rise to the top and have all the money my heart could possibly desire. Just from singin’ for my supper, so to speak (or should I say sing?). Yeah, buckets of money in gold, silver, greenbacks, and diamonds.
So, before every practice or rehearsal, I’d repeat to myself, “Money money money.” Then, I’d finish practice or rehearsal and repeat again, “money money money.” It didn’t matter that I was six or seven. I knew if I could see it in my mind, I could make it happen.
And I could see buckets of money, in my mind, in Technicolor!
And if you believe this story so far, you don’t know me at all.
Because actually…
I spent 10’s of thousands of hours of my young life I dedicated myself to singing. And learning music theory, scales, sight-reading, and just about anything music related.
For the love of money? Absolutely not! For the love of music. Music has been a constant companion and best friend to me for as long as I can remember. And all the years I spent as a full-time musician only got me in the vicinity of riches. But I loved that time. And I wouldn’t change it at all. Well, maybe a couple of things.
Now, in this age of digital downloads and music streaming, many people say all music should be free. And as someone who made a living singing and playing music, I can wholeheartedly say, NO!
Right here on my website you can find plenty of free music available. It’s even available at the bottom of this post. But I bet you’ve noticed something I noticed about life right here in America.
It still takes money to buy groceries
And gas, and cars, and clothes, and housing. Yeah, just about everything. What’s up with that? Does everybody have that same vision of buckets of money in their heads that I had as a boy? Sheesh.
You know what I’d like to see?
How ’bout everybody works for free and everything is free?
That would solve the problem. Right? Or should it be just the goofy singer songwriters and other artists who should work for free? Call me crazy. But that, according to my thesaurus, doesn’t seem balanced, fair, equitable, or even sustainable to singer songwriters and other artists.
At least it’s not the important people.
Anyway…
My track record proves I don’t live and work for the love of money (which is the root of all evil). But I do live and work in a society/culture where money is necessary to live.
So, call me crazy (now cut that out), but I still work to create, produce, and perform songs (and books) to any who care to listen and read. And I still need to charge for my goods and services.
Why? Because rent and groceries ain’t gonna pay for themselves.
More money, more persona…everyone’s a prima donna.
Can’t we understand that it’s larger than life?
Another car and another diamond…
The way we take is like a crime, and
