Something to sing about in this era of doubt

Life. Love. And freedom. Hope. Bread. And water. Joy. And a rock-solid promise. Yeah, I’ve definitely got something to sing about. And when I say “sing,” that’s how I cheer. Because, for me, singing is the best form of celebration.

So you might ask, “Well, what IS this something to sing about”

And I might answer, “Well, well, well…I’m not goin’ to hell.” (Yeah, I answer in rhymes. So what.)

And that’s definitely something to celebrate because I certainly don’t deserve to not go to hell. Are you keepin’ up with that line of thought? Good. Let’s continue.

There are people, all over the world, and right here in America, who are working hard to make sure people like me don’t enjoy this life so much. Yeah, it’s true. And if you believe and trust in Jesus as the only Way to eternal life, you’re right here with me. They don’t want you to enjoy this life so much either. Are you feelin’ it?

Of course, if you’re not a boat rocker (and obviously I am), then you might not have much to worry about from those people who hate you. But that’s not a good strategy in the long run. Because it means you’re swimming around in the lukewarm water. And God’s not a fan of the lukewarm.

And if you truly wanna enjoy life…and I’m talkin’ life that never ends…it’s a good idea to take a stand. Or I should say, take THE stand. But I gotta warn you. When you do, you won’t get what you deserve. Can you live with that?  (hint: yes)

(After you read these lyrics, or listen to them in the podcast, get your own “what I deserve” t-shirt – it’s the purple one on this page)

Give Me What I Deserve

You gave me life…
Gave me love, and gave me freedom.
You took my sins…
And You nailed “˜em, and You beat “˜em…

“˜Cause this person who you bought never had the nerve.
So I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

You gave me hope,
Gave me bread and living water.
You gave your blood…
When I led you to the slaughter.

But you never even fought or let your focus swerve.
And I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

Lord, don’t give me…what I deserve.
If I stand in the middle of the road,
Nudge me to Your side.
Lord, don’t give me…what I deserve…
“˜Cause I’m the reason and the cause
Why Jesus died…But then He rose again!

You gave me joy…
Gave Your word you’d leave me never.
You gave Your life so that I could live forever.

And on this earthly azure dot I can choose to serve.
So I’m glad that you did not…
Give me what I deserve.

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” If you’re a principled person, or if you’re someone who knows the difference between good and evil, you’ve probably heard that quote by Edmund Burke. Or did Eddie actually come up with that one? Hmm, there appears to be some good evidence he didn’t. And, it’s a great way to say you gotta stand for something good and right. But…

According to an article I read on some famous good and evil quotes that saying might have actually been by John Stuart Mill. He was an English philosopher. And some time during the 1860’s he wrote “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.”

Leave it to the English to put in more words than necessary. Yeah, I like the first version (that Edmund Burke wrote or didn’t write) better. Because it rolls off the tongue more easily. And it gets the point across in fewer words.

If good men don’t stand for something right, they can lose everything.

And this is 2000% more true for good women.

Not really. I just made up that number. Because there are women who read and listen to what I write and read. And I know it’s important to be inclusive. So, I figured 2000% is a who lot of inclusive’. Right?

Anyway…

Evil is expanding at an exponential rate right now. And I think it’s happening here in the “land of the free” and the “home of the brave” more than just about anywhere. And that’s just because I believe we had the most to lose and the furthest to fall. Or is that farthest?

Point is…it’s a long way down.

But a better place for good men (and women) to “compass their ends” doesn’t reside in government. No, bureaucracy is like your small intestines when not enough hydrochloric acid is present in your body. It’s a breeding ground for parasites.

So, it’s important to stand for what’s actually right. Not merely what you “feel” is right. Stand for something like Truth, for instance. And dare I say it (rhetorical question)…absolute Truth?

Yeah. Stand for that. Like in these lyrics by my favorite songwriter…

Take A Stand

If you take a stand and you stand for the Way,
You might never be rich.
But no gold here beats the treasure in Heaven,
And you’ll know which is which.

Angels are gonna rejoice,
And we’re gonna get to see how
The Lord will judge the ones who wait.
So better take a stand right now.

If you take a stand and you stand for the Truth,
You could lose a good friend.
But if you lose the whole wide world
And keep your soul, you win in the end.

All eyes are gonna look up.
All knees are gonna bow,
And when that time comes it’s too late.
You gotta take a stand right now.

If you take a stand and you stand for Life,
People might laugh and make fun.
And Jesus didn’t say it was gonna be easy,
But you’ll be with Him when this life is done.

No more livin’ like this;
By the sweat of your brow,
And if you want God’s paradise,
You better take a stand right now.

Resurrection song believers sing along

Just before the dawn of the twenty-first century, I wrote a song about this very day. No, not April 4, 2021. I’m talking about Resurrection Sunday. Also known as Easter. But, believe it or not, there are still people who don’t know what it means. And they don’t understand the way it all came about. So, my resurrection song is about that…

I think it’s a pretty good song. Even if that recording of it’s not the best. Sure, it’s no Peter Cottontail song. But I did have a guy tell me he thought it was just about the best contemporary Christian song he’d ever heard. And, I won’t feign false humility, shuffle my feet, and say, “Aw, you’re just sayin’ that.” But I WILL say it’s one of the best compliments I ever got.

Because my resurrection song comes from the heart.

And just in case you didn’t catch all the lyrics, here they are, and Happy Easter 2021!

The Way

And it came to pass one day on a mountain far away
That a soul was taken and a life forsaken
Because someone had to pay
For the heart of all mankind. There was no untarnished mind.
So one life was spent Who was innocent,
But He left His Word behind…

Forgive them for they know not what they do.
Redeem them and I give My Blood to You.
We can rise up No matter how much the guilt might weigh.
He said…”I am the Way!”

Now so many years have gone And we love with blinders on.
How we tolerate is a form of hate.
Where’s the Rock He stood upon?
For the Truth is absolute and it’s foolish to dispute.
It confounds the wise but it opens eyes,
And it saves the destitute

Chorus

Now don’t turn to the left don’t turn to the right.
Just run straight to Him with all your might!

inst…chorus to end

Greener pastures do exist. How's that for a twist?

Elgielene and I were driving down the highway the other day, and we saw a small herd of longhorn cattle. And we both commented on how healthy they looked. We could tell it was at least partly because they were grazing in greener pastures than other cows in the area. But that didn’t stop one of the cows from poking its head way through the fence to graze on the other side.

And that made me think of the old “greener pastures” saying.

You’ve heard it right? It’s almost always repeated like it’s always a bad thing. But is that really true? No. Because greener pastures truly DO exist. And I mean for anybody from any status in life. Rich or poor. Young or old. The beautiful people AND the plain folks.

It doesn’t matter where you come from, what awards you’ve won, or anything else like that. What DOES matter is WHO you know.

Most people who read my articles, watch my videos, tune in to my podcast, or listen to my songs already know what I’m talkin’ about. And to you I’m sayin’ “Look for opportunities to share this greener pastures message.”

Show ’em how to get themselves on the other side of that fence and get…

In The House of the Lord

Father God,
You never leave me You never forsake me.
And Your Word…
Gives me courage to go where you take me.
You are with me through each dire upheaval.
With You in me I will fear no evil.
As I walk through the shadow of death…
I will sing till my very last breath…

Green pastures, still waters…
Goodness and mercy for your sons and daughters…
True love dwells in the House of the LORD.
Each person, each nation…
Can be renewed through Your sweet restoration…
True love dwells in the House of the LORD.

Father God,
You made a Way for my total redemption.
I believe…”¨Jesus died to provide that exemption.
He’s my shepherd through thorns and thru clover.
He’s my new wine, and my cup runs over.
As I walk through the shadow of death…
I will sing till my very last breath”

Chorus

What you know that just ain't so

“It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” You’ve heard that more than once I bet. And it sure applies to Christian doctrinal differences. Because I see it more and more, with each passing year, how Christians put words and actions into God’s mouth and hands that He didn’t (and doesn’t) do and say. In other words…

There’s a ton of what you know that just ain’t so goin’ on out there.

Like the messed up idea that God predestined everything that happens or has happened or ever will happened. And how that means everything happens for a reason. And that we just need to remember it’s all “part of God’s plan.” Like I said, that’s messed up. So, to that I say, no.

And then how about this whole messed up idea of Christians forgiving everybody? Yeah. You even see people interviewed on TV after a loved one was murdered. And they’ll say things like, “I know God wants me to forgive him (the murderer), but it’s not easy.” Or they just go ahead and forgive the murderer and feel good about themselves for doing so.

That’s messed up, too. And to that, I also say, no.

Of course, the most ubiquitous case of what you know that just ain’t so is “Judge not.” Also known as “don’t judge” or “I’m not judging you” or some other form you’ve probably seen and heard.

And the irony is…the Christians who say we’re not supposed to judge will get very judgmental toward any other Christian who’d dare to judge someone. I’m sure they mean well (don’t touch that sarcasm dial), but they truly either haven’t read Paul’s writings, or they just forgot.

It’s really important to get these things right. I wrote a song about ’em. Here are the lyrics.

A Thousand Times No

Everything is for a reason
God is in control
Everything He turns to good
For His higher goal.
So do you want to thank Him for
Destruction and despair?
Is He the author of confusion? You see it everywhere…

No, no…a thousand times no.
No no a thousand times
I said, No, no…a thousand times no.
No no a thousand times.

Should you freely give forgiveness?
The Bible tells you so.
But what if someone’s unrepentant?
How does that one go?
Should they get to live in sin
And skip the judgement day?
Take a look at the Revelation.
What would Jesus say?

No, no…a thousand times no.
No no a thousand times
I said, No, no…a thousand times no.
No no a thousand times.

And who are you to judge?
Your eyes can clearly see
That you’re no holier
Than him or her or me.
So, should you shut your mouth
And skip the words of Paul?
Did he misunderstand
The Lord’s enduring call?

No, no…a thousand times no.
No no a thousand times
I said, No, no…a thousand times no.
No no a thousand times.

Influencers and teens and psychedelic scenes

John Lennon, that slightly famous Beatles guy, once said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. And I actually think he might’ve been taken a little out of context by reporters and fans at the time. Because I’ve checked into what he said, and it appeared to not be a statement made out of arrogance. But the way it was blown out of proportion highlights the connection between influencers and teens.

And I think Mr. Lennon progressed (or rather digressed), in his worldview, to the point of most likely believing his own press. And the Beatles’ press. In other words, it appeared he could Imagine a world that didn’t need, and probably shouldn’t have, the influence of the Creator.

And that’s when the connection between influencers and teens ruins lives.

I can’t judge John Lennon’s heart. So, I don’t 100% know where he’s spending eternity. But judging by his words and actions, my guess would be it’s not Heaven. And one of the things that made me think of him, and write this, is an April Fool’s joke he and Yoko Ono played back in 1970.

They issued a statement to the press announcing they’d be getting dual sex change operations. And those kinds of operations are in the news a lot these days. I’m not saying John and Yoko’s statement had a direct correlation to what’s going on. But there IS a downstream effect.

And that’s a bit ironic since John got himself a copy of Timothy Leary’s book, “The Psychedelic Experience” and also a copy of “The Tibetan Book Of The Dead.”  So, good logic and reason don’t tend to happen when a person “turns on” with drugs and reads, “When in doubt, relax, turn off your mind, float downstream.”

Good things don’t tend to happen for teens who follow those examples either. Yeah, I’m just being old-fashioned and narrow-minded. But I certainly won’t sit at my keyboard trying to Imagine away the source of Life and Love.

I hope my influence leads to life
And ultimately to the Source.
And it would be great to know that I
Helped someone to change their course.

Dark ages and writing stages on pages

Oh, the dreadful misery. The likes of which the world might never see again. And it’s a miracle anything or anyone survived it. Of course, I’m talking about the Dark Ages of the world of art. It was the time of Homer. And the fall of Troy…say it ain’t so, Ma. And the golden Mycenean culture had basically faded away. Innovation did, too. Or so they (and who are they?) say.

But thank goodness the Dark Ages happened in the BC days.

No, not BC powder (I can’t believe you even thought of that). Huh-uh, this BC is also known as the time, in history, Before Christ. And from what I’ve read, the Dark Ages lasted from about 1200 to 1025 BC. That’s a long time for art to be relegated to basic pottery. Two words for you: Bo Ring.

Thankfully the age of Geometric Art came along around 900 to 700 BC. (side note: all that backward counting is so BC…bizarro curious) And we’re not just talking triangles and trapezoids. Pottery decoration started showing animals and even humans. Whoa, dude. That’s acute angle. (*rimshot)

(Another side note: It’s less than impressive how online dictionaries define the BC abbreviation as standing for the “theoretical birth of Jesus Christ.” And they describe AD as “after the theoretical death of Jesus Christ.”) It appears they have a theoretical view of history. OK, moving on…

And I’m not gonna take you all the way down the primrose path of the other ages of the arts. You know, the Archaic time. Classical art, aka the “Golden Age.”  Hellenistic art with famous stone and marble statues. Impressionism, modern, post-modern, psychedelic, etc. Artsy, schmartsy. Who cares?

No, I wanted to focus mainly on those dark ages. Because they remind me of a phase I went through, as a writer, back when I started filling spiral notebooks.

Yeah, you could call it my “dark phase.” Or you could just let me call it that…which I just did.

Anyway…

It’s certainly not my favorite work. By a long shot. But I like to keep it, to look through (once in a great while) and see how my attitude and heart has changed. And I’m grateful for how much more Light is in my writing and singing now. It affirms, for me, how God is good all the time. And not the director of…

False Moves

I seem to make so many false moves.
So many have misunderstood.
I guess I must expect the worst results,
And I’d deal with them, if I could.

False moves, like shadows, fall behind.
You might go look for them, but they’re difficult to find.
False moves, like liquor, bring a sense of doubt.
So hard to live with, and so easy to live without.

I always seem to see the empty spots
And fill them up with simple words,
But when I think I’ve got the right idea,
It disappears like Autumn birds.

I sit and dream of traveling so far,
And then I end up standing still.
Part of me says I will make it.
Part of me says I never will.

False moves”

Innocent song has been gone so long

They sure had some silly lyrics in the hits from the 50’s. For the most part it was one innocent song of love after another. Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing – You Make Me Feel So Young – When I Fall In Love – I Only Have Eyes For You – Those are just a few of the top 100 hits from the 50’s.

Of course you had the occasional less than innocent song, too.

After all, you had those ne’er-do-wells like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. Boy, what a couple of trouble makers. Jerry Lee messin’ around with underage cousins and Elvis singin’ the Jailhouse Rock. Yeah, there’s always gonna be the black sheep.

But those guys were like choir boys compared to what’s goin’ on in pop music now. And these days, the “bad boys” got nothin’ on the girls. In fact, some of the least innocent and most vile lyrics (if you can call them that) are flowing out of female singers (if you can call them that).

I won’t smudge and taint my website by repeating or quoting any of that filth. And I know that makes me a major L7 (old reference…look it up). But I’d rather listen to, write, and sing one innocent song with upbeat, uplifting lyrics and melodies than even accidentally have any of that other junk pass through my speakers or earbuds.

Why?

Why is the sky blue?
And why is the grass green?
Why is the sun gold?
What does it all mean?
Why is the air clear?
And why is the ground brown?
Why does the earth float and never fall down?

Cause God made skies.
He made them blue.
He made the world for me and you
And all because it pleased Him to.
God loves us through and through.

Why is a horse fast?
And why is a snail slow?
Why does it get cold when Northern winds blow?
Why is the sea green?
And why is the sand white?
And why is the day day?
Why is the night night?

Cause God made creatures big and small,
And sand and seas; He made them all.
And even if we trip and fall
God helps us to stand tall.

God’s love is always there.
His love will never die.
And so you can trust in Him
For all your questions why…

Christian stuff is hardly tough enough

Sometimes people ask me why I spend so much effort writing “Christian stuff” instead of just writing “more popular music.” And the short answer is, because there’s so much of the “popular stuff” that’s anti-God. So, there’s an urgent need to offset it with strong Christian words and music.

The longer answer is “Christian stuff” will last a lot longer.

Or at least consequences and results will. Because if I sing yet another “love song” maybe somebody (or even lots of somebodies) will get in a better mood for a little while. But then, because feelings change, it can all fade away into obscurity.

But what if I write and sing a song about the truth of God’s love. And what if somebody hears it and decides to look into this whole “Christian stuff” a little more deeply. And what if that person says, “Yes, the evidence is clear. There truly IS a Creator who loves me. And He truly DID die and rise from the dead to take my punishment. And I truly want the eternal life He promised me.”

Yeah. What if that happened? What would that mean?

Eternal results for a little time invested at my keyboard and computer recording software. And no top 40 results or streaming services or YouTube plays will ever equal even a drop in the bucket compared to that.

So, while there’s nothing evil or wrong about writing typical pop music, it’s a temporary fix. An empty bag of tricks. And it’s eventually gonna be a faded, forgotten melodic path leading to nowhere.

But maybe nowhere is where you’d rather be.
If so, you should know, it’s not OK with me
Because I’d rather see you truly happy
In the only life you can live eternally.

Speak to me in a melody because it's neighborly

Play

Do you speak Psalms? And how fluent is your Hymns? Or what about Spiritualese? What’s that you say? You don’t speak any of those languages? And you don’t even believe they ARE languages. Well, I guess, technically, they aren’t languages. But you could speak to me in any one of them if you’d start with a melody in your heart.

But you can’t speak to me that way if you don’t follow THE law.

OK, I’m gonna bring this more into focus. But first, I’d like you to get a feel for my favorite language. And that language, of course, is music. The most profound and passionately perfect language there is. With the possible exception of God’s native tongue…which it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s a form of music.

Side note: as I’m writing this, my wife is doing some of her “chores” in another part of the house. And she loves to listen to music while she works. And right now her phone is playing “Carry On Wayward Son” by the band, Kansas. Love that song. It really rocks! And it’s in my repertoire. OK, back to my point.

Now, you might think a guy like me, who’s always talking about Grace and how you should accept it and get out from under the law, wouldn’t say “follow the law.”

But you definitely should follow THE law.

And THE law I’m talking about is “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind…”

Don’t misunderstand me. I didn’t say you MUST follow THE law. I said “should.” It’s your choice.

But when you do, you’ll see the results Jesus promised,

“Do this and you will live.”

Plus, when you follow that law, you’ll almost surely follow the next part and “love your neighbor as yourself.” And your neighbor will be your brother…or sister. And you’ll most likely discover, without even realizing it happened, that you’ll speak fluent Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritualese (aka spiritual songs).

Because those words and languages will flow from the melody in your heart.

How can I explain the numbers in the rain?
I’d like to help illuminate the pathways to your mind.
But I am just a man; I’ll do the best I can
I’ll show you where to look, and I’ll tell you this:
It isn’t behind

It’s a firecracker and a windchime
And it’s a loudspeaker and a street mime
It’s the friction of invisible wind…It’s the living end

(from my song “The Living End”)

Manly dude's attitudes and platitudes

OK, this is a manly post. So, women are only allowed as long as they intend to use the information to help the men in their lives. Are we clear? Good. Let’s proceed…

As I was searching for some clothes, online, yesterday, an ad popped up (who’d’ve thunk it) with a reference to manly clothes. And I thought, “Hey, that’s definitely me. I’d better check this out.” So, I clicked, saw some clothes that didn’t impress me, and started to click away. But then some links popped up about masculinity. So, since I know how toxic that is, I took the bait and clicked one.

And I found an article about what’s considered manly.

And the first thing on their list was muscles. They mentioned how, way back in the twentieth century, manly men were the muscular and strong types. Those were the type you’d see in ads and commercials. But nowadays billboards and TV ads lean more toward the “delicate” side (Does someone have some ginger? I think I’m gonna be ill).

But that’s advertising. What about the real world. Well, it turns out women are more attracted to men who are at least moderately fit and muscular. And men tend to have more respect for other guys like that. They see them as inspiration and motivation to better themselves.

And that totally makes sense. Because no man should aspire to be delicate or porky.

Another manly attribute in the list was the ability to play an instrument AND sing.

And they made a point of stressing the two together. It’s great to be able to play an instrument for an audience. But there’s a much more highly regarded perception of the guy who can get in the spotlight and play AND sing. That kind of man is seen to be an educated and artistic person. A confident and even romantic person. And a guy who’s more likely to have higher social standing because he’s willing to stand up in front of a crowd.

Ok, Ok. I’m liking this article. It makes total sense.

Uh-oh…they just swerved in the wrong direction a little.

Because they said guys who ride motorcycles are considered manly. And the perception there is how women see them as risk takers. Guys who would probably lay down their lives, if necessary, to save the ones they love. Trouble is…there’s the rather constant threat of laying down the bike. Plus, have you seen those guys who ride Harleys? Most of them don’t exactly fit into that first muscular category.

Well, let’s see what else defines masculinity.

Oh no. Another detour.

Smoking.

Apparently it’s another risk related attribute of manliness. But I’m willing to bet more women, these days, find men more attractive (and manly) if they don’t carry a pack of cigarettes around in their t-shirt sleeve.

Now, I really like the next two attributes of a real man. Beards and guns. There’s nothing that distinguishes real men from women and boys than a beard. And this can be from a scruff to a full beard, although I recommend you skip the scruff.

Go for the real deal.

And the article mentioned a quote from Tony Robbins about guns. Apparently he made a point when he asked, “When a man puts a gun to your head, how important is he from 0 to 10?” Of course, that’s not what any gun owner guy should have in mind for his weapons. But the point is…when you’re willing to arm yourself and show that you’re willing to defend yourself, that’s pretty darn manly.

Next on the list is one I like because it goes back to the days when I was growing up. Back when men were more in control of their emotions. The article pointed out how people who turn even the smallest issues into earth-shattering scenes are called drama “queens.” Not drama kings.

And while it’s not un-masculine to cry, it’s way more masculine to control your feelings if you’re a man. Because it’s another way to set yourself apart from women. And, even though they say they want you to be able to express your feelings, they don’t like it if you cry the way they do. So, bottom line? You don’t have to be emotionless. But it’s good to show those emotions…less.

And speaking of emotional outbursts…how about when a woman sees a spider in the shower? Or snakes in the back yard? Or mice and rats basically anywhere?

Yeah. And what do real men do? They handle it.

You wanna make some easy masculine points? Go kill the spider. Or snake. Or rodents. And get them out of your territory. Show ’em who’s boss. Because no real woman wants to see a man scream like a girl at the sight of sneaky, slimy, venomous creatures.

And there were several other attributes of manliness, but I’ll share just two more. Mostly because they support my self-perception. But also because they might help another guy, out there somewhere, move away from the pastel curtains and throw pillows.

Be able to fix stuff. From tech, to automotive, to plumbing and electrical, and definitely to computer and mobile device issues. Of course, a lot of those things are getting so complicated you almost need a specialist for each area of life. And updates and upgrades happen so fast, nowadays, even us high IQ types can’t keep up with all of it.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have manly powers of logic and deductive reason. Because, that way, you can determine what needs to be done even if you don’t have the tools or other resources to do it yourself. Oh yeah, there’s nothing like gettin’ it done.

And finally, there’s clothes. Dark clothes to be more exact.

Dark clothes are recommended as more manly. And I get it. After all, it’s that whole perception thing again. Rich and powerful CEO’s and other movers and shakers tend to wear dark suits. But I’m a little torn on this one. Because I DO wear mostly dark clothes.

But over the years, when I was a full time musician, in front of audiences (see the playing and singing section above) I chose to wear bright colors. Shirts, shoes, and even suits that made bold statements. Like the time I wore a pink tux to play a wedding reception. And I guarantee there were no females there who thought of me as anything but manly.

But before I make this all about me and my bold, masculine style, I’ll just say this.

Guys…be as masculine as you possibly can. And don’t be fooled by so-called societal norms. Be secure in the knowledge that your true norm is to be a man. And it beats being a woman. Hands down, no comparison. No contest.

Unless you really ARE a woman. Then, that’s for another article.

Be a man.
Yes you can…
Be a man.
Here’s the plan.
Your lifespan,
Be a man.

Ode to Joy is a mighty fine alloy

Ode to Joy is a musical and spiritual alloy. Even if Ludwig didn’t mean it that way. And of course, I’m talking about Beethoven’s Symphony #9. Or at least a section of it. If you wanna give your brain a revitalizing vacation, listen to the whole symphony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3217H8JppI  Or you can go to the Ode section here:

Imagine composing an Ode to Joy when you’re deaf.

For that matter, imagine composing it with excellent hearing. But it’s so much more excruciating to think of a gifted musician and composer unable to hear his own creation. And I’ll bet Herr Beethoven was less than joyful at the loss of his hearing. And yet, the most recognizable section of his Symphony #9 contains the vocal poem about joy.

So, that’s why I called it a musical and spiritual alloy. Because I believe the composer fused music with the message and created something even stronger than the two ingredients on their own.

I found the lyrics to that poem, written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785. And it was apparently revised in 1803 by none other than Ludwig himself. Keep in mind, this is translated from German to English. And those Germans have a hard time showing emotions (just kidding…sort of). So, the translated version isn’t as pleasant to the ears as it would be if written in the romance languages. But it still works.

This is Ode to Joy. Notice the references to your Creator.

O friends, no more of these sounds!
Let us sing more cheerful songs,
More songs full of joy! Joy!
Joy, bright spark of divinity, daughter of Elysium,
Fire-inspired we tread within thy sanctuary.

Thy magic power re-unites all that custom has divided,
All men become brothers, under the sway of thy gentle wings.
Whoever has created an abiding friendship,
Or has won a true and loving wife,
All who can call at least one soul theirs, join our song of praise;
But those who cannot must creep tearfully away from our circle.
All creatures drink of joy at natures breast.

Just and unjust alike taste of her gift;
She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
A tried friend to the end.
Even the worm can feel contentment,
And the cherub stands before God!

Gladly, like the heavenly bodies
Which He sent on their courses
Through the splendor of the firmament;
Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
Like a hero going to victory!

You millions, I embrace you.
This kiss is for all the world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving father.
Do you fall in worship, you millions?
World, do you know your creator?
Seek Him in the heavens;
Above the stars must he dwell.

Ring of fire goes higher and higher

He said he had a dream where he heard Mexican trumpets. And I guess that’s how they became such a recognizable part of his hit song, “Ring of Fire.” In fact, it went to number 1 on March 25, 1963. And it stayed there for seven weeks. Not bad for a guy whose last name was Cash but was born into a family who didn’t have loads of it.

Johnny Cash made “Ring of Fire” one of his signature songs.

And it was actually written by his wife, June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore. And you probably didn’t know this, but June’s sister, Anita, sang and recorded the song first. But Johnny put his signature style to it, and most people would never guess it was written or sung by anyone else.

Plus, Johnny Cash lived a life that synced up with many of the songs he recorded. So, people found it easy to associate him with the words and music. His biography reads like the sadly typical Hollywood drug addiction stereotype. Amphetamines, barbiturates, jail time, rehabilitation, and relapses.

No wonder he was so believable when he sang “Ring of Fire” and “Folsom Prison Blues” and “I Walk The Line.”

I can appreciate Johnny’s dedication to his craft. And I get how so many people might relate to a regular guy singin’ about real life troubles and challenges. But Mr. Cash wouldn’t have had much of a career if he depended on me for album sales.

As I’ve said before, I’m not a country music fan.

But I remember Johnny Cash songs playin’ in my parents’ house. And my Uncle Drexel, who played guitar and sang on an amateur level, certainly enjoyed those songs. So, I was indirectly connected to the music and the stories. And it seemed only natural to experience a little sadness when I heard Johnny died in September of 2003.

But the good news is…Johnny Cash, who was inducted into not only the Country Music Hall of Fame, but also the Rock-n-Roll AND Gospel Music halls of fame, went to Heaven.

Because, despite all his fame, and despite all his drug addiction and jail time problems, he was humble enough to admit he needed the salvation offered and provided by Jesus. So, instead of Johnny going down into a burnin’ ring of fire while the flames went higher, he went higher than anywhere in this world.

And I hope you’ll walk the line
And skip the prison blues
That trap your mortal soul
And steal your dancin’ shoes.
Because this life is short
And full of doubt and pain.
So, listen to that voice
That’s still inside your brain.
And give yourself the chance
For life and happiness.
The offer’s there and free.
Don’t hesitate. Say yes.

Issues of society remain the same variety

Different people don’t tend to get along so well. Have you noticed that? And history books denote sections of time, most often, using wars as markers. And almost all of those wars were between different peoples. Although it could be argued that America’s own civil war runs contrary to that assertion. But it doesn’t diminish my point. Which is how the basic issues of society haven’t changed much.

And the mass murders, quickly adding up the first quarter of 2021, are somber examples of our corporate inabilities to address the problems with wisdom.

Instead…politicians, people calling themselves journalists, celebrities of all kinds, and even your garden variety neighbors spend countless hours trying to understand. What kind of animal/monster/person could he have done this? How could someone like this get to this point? Etc. Etc. Etc.

And then, naturally, calls for stricter, more stringent laws go out. And large numbers of so-called “caring individuals” jump on the bandwagon. “We gotta do a better job of educating.” Or “It’s too easy to get your hands on weapons of mass destruction.” Or how about the ubiquitous, “There oughta be a law.”

If the issues of society could be solved with laws…why haven’t they been?

I read an article, from six years ago, that said there are at least 5000 federal laws on the books. And there are somewhere between 10,000 and 300,000 regulations to go with those laws. And those are all just on the federal level. Those numbers don’t include state, county, and local laws.

So, if more laws would do the trick…why haven’t they?

Because they don’t address the root cause for the even the least harmful issues of society. Much less the mass murders epidemic.

And I can hear somebody ask, “OK, Tony…if there’s a so-called root cause for it all, what is it?”

Selfishness. And to put a little more polish on it, rebellious selfishness.

For example, when a despicable human being goes into a grocery store and shoots people he doesn’t even know, who do you think is his top priority? Yeah…self.

And I can say “despicable human being” because that’s the kind of human being who murders. “Good people” don’t murder. And I put quotes around “good people” because no one is good except God. But anyway…when you hate your fellow man, and love only yourself, you can do the worst things.

So, how do so many people get to the point of murder? Sadly, it’s because they’re raised on hate. Yeah, hate is taught in public schools, on TV, and in most major Hollywood movies. Kids are taught, from the earliest ages, that we came from animals. That we humans are just another animal. And what do animals do to survive? The strong ones kill and eat the weak ones.

So, what’s the answer to all this destructive teaching?

What can solve the issues of society, if it’s not new and better laws?

In a word…love. In three words…love AND hate.

What?! Solve the problem of hate with more hate? Yeah. But not the kind of hate you might be picturing in your head. The kind of hate that adds wisdom to love. God inspired Paul to write “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.”

And to abhor means to hate with all your might.

But notice, Paul sandwiched the hate between love and good. Pretty cool, right?

This will sound somewhat counterintuitive. But if you “love your neighbor,” then you’ll hate him when he’s evil. And you’ll tell him (or her) when he’s evil. And you’ll love him enough to tell him he’s on a path to hell. But if you hate him enough, you’ll look for ways to “understand” his motives.

I didn’t come up with this concept. I’m a messenger. The only thing one person needs, in order for us to have love/hate issues, is another person. And when the issues of society include mass murders and judicial confusion, the message is more important than ever.

Accept or reject,
Invite or lose sight,
Draw near or pick fear,
Choose or lose,
Life. Love. Jesus.

Older and wiser? Or a truth compromiser?

Play

Older and wiser. They should go together like sourdough bread and grass fed butter. But they don’t always. Especially in town of Ignoraville, on Mount Wealthscape, in the land of Rebelaphant.

Sadly, most of the residents of Rebelephant aren’t older and wiser.

But they’re richer. And that’s the most frequent cause of a lack of wisdom. And the ratio of wisdom to wealth decreases as the wealth increases.

For example, the richest person in rock or pop music. Paul McCartney.

I remember listening to and enjoying so many of McCartney’s hits back in the 70’s. And he truly was a hit making machine. No wonder his net worth is over a billion dollars (which I’m sure he accumulated by accident since he believes in eradicating poverty).

And I’m one of those who thinks he was, by far, the most talented member of the Beatles.

But, as he’s gotten older (79 this year), Paul has gone from singing catchy tunes like “Silly Love Songs,” back in the 70’s, to “Fuh You” from 2018. Of course, he calls the newer song a “schoolboy prank.” And the lyrics are clever innuendo. So, it’s open to interpretation. But that doesn’t negate my point.

From innocence to innuendo.

As he’s gotten older, his true wisdom (if he’s ever had any) has dwindled away like the fadeouts at the end of many of his hit songs.

And McCartney is just one example, in an almost endless parade of examples of rich rogues from Rebelaphant.

Almost every one of us is impacted by these scoundrels, in some way, almost every day. For example, the owners of Facebook, Twitter, and other big social media channels. And the owners of Amazon and former owner of Microsoft. Or how about billionaire real estate moguls from Berkshire Hathaway? And a lunkheaded billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team.

I could go on and on and on.

But I’m sure you get it. Just close your eyes and visualize a big, clunky camel squeezing its hoof through a sewing needle. Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.

And so it is for most rich men (and women) and Heaven.

But where there’s life, there’s hope. And I hope Mr. McCartney’s understanding and wisdom turn around before it’s too late. I hope he discovers how Jesus is still saying to him, “I wanna hold your hand and give you eternal life.” And I hope he doesn’t end up like Father Makenzie, from the song “Eleanor Rigby.”

“Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working, darning his socks in the night when there’s nobody there
What does he care?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?”

Yacht rock, Jayhawk, and the bloomin' hollyhock

Yacht rock. Of course, I had no idea I was listening to music from that genre. And that’s mainly because it wasn’t called yacht rock at the time. Plus, to be completely transparent on this matter (as is the odd trend these days), I never heard of that term until this morning.

Yacht rock is supposed to be the “West coast” sound of the 70’s and early 80’s.

And apparently it has its own channel on streaming services like Spotify and iHeartRadio, etc. So, I’m obviously behind the times. Because I didn’t know any of that until today.

But anyway…back to my story…

It was September of 1977. Still enough warmth to be able to drive with the windows down. And yet cool enough to make you appreciate life with exhilaration. Like the shimmering gold of the wheat fields with the pink, yellow, and white blooms of the towering Hollyhocks around the edges. And the ever present hawks, patiently perched on telephone poles or lines or limbs as they looked for lunch.

Yeah, it was that kind of Kansas day.

And I had just bought a brand new cassette of a brand new release from the band, Steely Dan. Their new album, titled “Aja.” (pronounced just like Asia) And since there was a 30 or 40 minute drive from “the city” back to my small town digs, I had plenty of time for listening to some new tunes.

As the cassette rolled through the tunes, my ears were hooked. Not just the cool instrumentation. But also the clever, yet vague, lyrics. Like on the title tune. With lines like “Up on the hill, People never stare, They just don’t care, Chinese music under banyan trees “¨Here at the dude ranch…Above the sea.” Yeah, I’m guessing only the writers know exactly what that meant. But the lyrics fit the tune like a glove.

Short verses, followed by the catchy chorus, sung to engaging chord progressions. Not the usual Top 40 predictable hits. The third verse from Aja said, “Up on the hill…They think I’m Ok” Or so they say. Chinese music always sets me free. Angular banjoes…Sound good to me.”

See what I mean? Angular banjoes.

Yeah, I enjoyed that new Steely Dan cassette over and over. I’d been a slight fan of theirs after I heard “Reelin’ In The Years,” a song Christopher Cross sang as my high school prom. Remind me to tell you about that some time.

But…and if you’ve followed me for a while, you might have guessed there’d be a but…

It’s always disappointing, but no longer a surprise, to hear talented and intelligent musicians, open their mouths and show how stupid they are. And Donald Fagen, the remaining founding member of Steely Dan, is no exception to that.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, around five years ago, he was asked, “You’ve said ‘Mary Shut the Garden Door’ from Morph the Cat was about what happens when ‘a thuggish cult gains control of the government.’ Did you predict Donald Trump?”

And he replied…

“Not specifically, but, as proved by a British study, all those right-wingers suffer from an enlargement of the amygdala in the lower brain. It makes them paranoid and aggressive. Hopefully, there will be a corrective surgery for this in the near-future (if we make it to a near-future).”

“Paranoid and aggressive.”

This from a guy who was arrested and charged with domestic violence for shoving and bruising his wife…when he was 67. But I’m sure it was just a result of some itis or ism.

Yeah, I’ve been a big fan of yacht rock. And I’ve been accused of writing and singing songs in that genre. But I’m almost always diametrically opposed to the worldviews of the famous, and commercially successful, yacht rockers.

It’s kinda like I’m playing the harp in an orchestra of angular banjoes.

The Joshua Tree sounds like driftwood to me

I remember a young lady telling me about The Joshua Tree when I was in Albuquerque, New Mexico back in 1987. I was booked there for two weeks, and she and couple of other friends asked me if I’d heard of that album by the band U2. And they asked because we’d all been in a friendly conversation about Christian values and principles in the music business. Or lack of them. Plus, they’d heard me sing “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” one of the songs on the album.

They told me The Joshua Tree showed U2’s Christian influences.

Of course, I was surprised by that. And, no, at that time I hadn’t heard The Joshua Tree collection. I’d only heard the “Looking For” single, liked it, and added it to my repertoire.

So, in case you’re thinking, “Well, Tony, did you give the album a listen? And, if so, what did you think?”

I tried to listen. But the songs basically ran together. Before I go any further, it’s important to acknowledge how music is certainly subjective. And there’s no denying the popularity of U2. They’ve sold millions more albums and made millions more than I ever will. But I’m not a fan. Because their music runs together.

And it definitely doesn’t resemble or stand up for Christian principles and values. Despite the fact that Christianity Today said this: “At a glance ” one of the most vital and influential albums in the history of rock””both mainstream and Christian…”

If that’s true, no wonder Christian churches are now dazed, confused, and almost totally compromised.

Thank God I follow Christ and not Christianity Today.

A while back, I took issue with Bono, lead singer for U2, after watching a video of him and Eugene Peterson talking about their views on the state of Christian music and the Psalms. And Bono’s worldview, politics, and propensity for profanity (not in that video) make him one of the least qualified pop musicians to have influence “in the history of rock, both mainstream and Christian.” And I’m Mr. Hewson’s (his real name) opinions of my music would resemble mine of his. At least his honest opinions.

The reason these gentle opinions popped into my head, today, is because March 21 marks the anniversary of The Joshua Tree’s number 1 status on the charts back in 1987. That’s 34 years in case you’re interested. And that means, Bono is gonna be 61 this year. And from what I can tell, he’s still on the wrong side of almost every major issue and topic in the world.

He’s barking up the wrong Joshua tree.

And if he’s truly looking for a relationship with his Creator, it appears he still hasn’t found what he’s looking for.

Climbin’ trees to find the answers in life,
And not lookin’ to the One who made trees,
Is an ideal way to drift through your life
Without knowing Who humility sees.

Wear your heart on your sleeve and hate what I believe

This comes from back in the days of knights and lords and ladies. Apparently it was customary for a knight to wear the name of a certain lady during a tournament. And it was typically the lady he loved…or would compete to impress. In other words, he was laying it all out in the open. These days, when you wear your heart on your sleeve, you’re probably revealing your innermost thoughts.

So, you don’t have to literally wear your heart on your sleeve like knights did.

In fact, you have lots of options for revealing your thoughts and laying it all out there. You’re reading an example right now. Yeah, each time I write an article here on TonyFunderburk.com I wear my heart on my sleeve. At least a little.

Not to impress the lords and ladies. But to hopefully shed and share a little light of truth, some music, and logic and reason.

But to borrow a line from a Kim Carnes song, “That’s where the trouble starts.”

Because one man’s truth, logic, and reason is another man’s hate speech. And that happens so often because truth is hate to those who hate the truth.

I’m not a fan of labeling humans according to paint colors. In fact, even though it’s probably a losing battle, I’m against the human color codes. I’ve written about it before. Red, yellow, black, and white are not skin colors. They’re paints. Or crayons. But most certainly not skin colors.

And I get it. Those colors are so ingrained in our minds now, it’s difficult to think of describing other people without using the RYBW scale. But it’s worth the effort to re-train your brain.

Otherwise you’ll end up saying silly stuff like “black lives matter.” And that could become such a thorn in somebody’s side that they’ll end up feeling the need to say “It’s OK to be white.”

And claws and fangs will pop out everywhere.

Of course “black” lives matter. And of course it’s OK to be “white.” But that’s because all human lives matter. And there are many shades of skin colors. One is not better or worse than the next.

But evidently humans just can’t go five minutes without picking a fight. Actually, that’s probably being generous. Humans can’t seem to go five seconds without picking a fight. Or having to deal with somebody else who’s picking one.

And so we end up with this kind of world: “unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful…”

If you’re paying attention, you see this in living color. All around the world. And especially right here in the good ol’ U. S. of A.

There IS a cure.

But it requires people of all skin shades to do something most of them seem completely unwilling to do.

Love.

But not hypocritical love. You see that kind everywhere in people who claim to love, accept, and tolerate everyone. But their love turns to vitriolic hate when someone dares to claim there is only one God. And one absolute Truth. And one Way to Heaven. Those claims will NOT be loved, accepted, or tolerated.

But just because people will hate you for standing firm on God’s word doesn’t mean you don’t do it. Remember, Jesus said “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me before it hated you.”

So, you’re in the best company even in the worst of times. And, as for me…

I plan to wear my heart on my sleeve
And share the reasons for what I believe.
And I’ll be sharing as long as I live
Because God’s love is the best gift to give.

Stay tuned,

Miracles song brought this thought along

47 years ago? Can it truly be that long? But you know what they say. Math don’t lie. And the numbers add up to (or subtract to) 47 years. I’m ramblin’ on about it because 1974 was the year, and today was the day (March 19), the band, Jefferson Airplane, became Jefferson Starship. And it was 1975 when they had a big hit with their “Miracles” song. And I can’t tell you how profoundly that song changed my life.

No, I can’t tell you how the “Miracles” song changed my life because…

It didn’t. In fact that song was more like a fingernail on a chalkboard to me. And no matter how many times I heard it, I just didn’t like it.

So, you might say, “Duh, Tony. Then, why’d you listen to it so many times?”

Because it was a favorite song of a roommate of mine, back in my days as a bartender in a disco club in the greater Kansas City area. He was from California. And his nickname was “Moon Doggy.” And I’m not making that up. So, he’d been a fan of Jefferson Starship since their days as Jefferson Airplane. And I guess he just really, really liked their new sound.

But that song drones on and on with lyrics repeated over and over. The message is clearly about a sexual relationship (big surprise in pop music, right?), and it repeats the phrase/chorus:

“If only you believe like I believe, baby (If only you believe like I believe)
We’d get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby (If only you believe in miracles)
So would I”

Not sure how many times that’s in the song. But I’m not gonna listen to it again and count. And I don’t recommend you do that either. Just take my word for it. It’s a lot.

But this song came up in my head (oh brother) because of a thread of conversation I saw online recently. It was based on the question…

“Do you believe in miracles?”

And if you’re a Christian, I hope you realize what a stupid question that is. Because Christians, above all other people except maybe Jews, should believe they’re real.

But the underlying (and overt) debate becomes whether or not miracles are “for today.”

Of course, they’re not.

But that doesn’t mean they’re not real. Because God is free to do as He sees fit. And He’s not constrained by any schedules we little humans put on the matter. But God has presented a wide range of dispensations, over the centuries, to save His creations. Some of those times included working miracles in the lives of His people.

So, you read the Bible, and of course…you believe in them.

But you keep reading the Bible and you see how faith doesn’t come by miracles. It comes by hearing. And hearing the Word. And you keep reading and digging deeper, and you see how those miraculous events almost always encouraged unbelief.

Weird, right?

Yeah, we humans tend to get downright weird about the amazing things God can do AND has done. And too many wanna watch “the show” rather than build a relationship with the One who made us.

And here’s what I think is miraculous. The fact that God still desires to have anything at all to do with us. Especially considering how the vast majority of people on the planet hate Him. But He’s a God of love and loving relationships. And He’s willing to endure much hate to enjoy what little love He gets from us.

So my answer to the question about believing in miracles is “Yes, I believe in them. But my trust is in the God who provided the one and only miracle I need (or anyone needs). God’s miracle that erases the need for any and all other miracles. The birth, life, death, and resurrection of His Son. Because that equals eternal life for me. And it shows the greatest Love.

And Moon Doggie…if you’re listening…

If only you believe and trust in God,
You’ll do much more than just get by.
If only you believe and trust in God,
You’ll live forever when you die.

Stay tuned,

Adrenal glands meet a lot of demands

Adrenal glands. Oh yeah, now we’re talking about some pretty exciting stuff. And I bet when you got up this morning the first thought you had, after your coffee kicked in, was “Where can I find me some stimulatin’ adrenal conversation?”

Never fear, I’ve got your adrenal glands gossip right here.

First, let’s talk about the easy-to-understand stuff. Like the zona glomerulosa, fasciculata, and reticularis. They don’t do so much. Just produce aldosterone, cortisol, and sex steroid hormone. So, no big deal.

Then, there’s the adrenal medulla that produces catecholamines. Or maybe you know them by their hormonal names, epinephrine and norepinephrine. But again…no big deal. Same with the adrenal cortex.  It’s the section that produces some hormones necessary for fluid and electrolyte (aka: salt) balance. Maybe you recognize their hormonal names: cortisol and aldosterone.

And here’s some more Captain Obvious stuff: The zona glomerulosa converts progesterone, through a series of steps, to the mineralocorticoid aldosterone. Then, some other layers of the cortex convert progesterone to 17-hydroxyprogesterone. And then the progesterone is converted to either the 17-hydroxysteroid cortisol or the 17-ketosteroid sex hormones.

Apparently every day these boring, little, triangle-shaped adrenal glands (located above your kidneys) secrete 15″“20 mg of cortisol, 25″“30 mg of androgens, and 75″“125 µg of aldosterone.

Yeah, I know. Big yawn.

Sure, I could blabber on and on about the ho-hum details of what your adrenal glands are doing while you’re enjoying your coffee and donuts. But your mind needs true stimulation. Right? And I’m sure you couldn’t care less about symptoms like…

  • Where’s my caffeine?
  • Why won’t my food (and my belly) go on down?
  • Stop yelling at me chips, cookies, and cakes!
  • I can’t get to sleep. No, wait. I can hardly wake up.
  • Who you callin’ Fatso?
  • Oh woe is me…all the time.
  • Why is there so much hair in the sink the same color as mine?
  • Thyroid schmyroid. Who needs it?

Yeah, I know a lot of people believe all that stuff going on inside you just happened by accident. So, who cares that your adrenal medulla can be stimulated along its preganglionic sympathetic fibers? And who cares how that causes release of dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine?

Plus, it’s just a nice side effect that sympathetic neural outflow is increased by some silly-sounding fight-or-flight response. Right? Yeah, so what, if that can be triggered by fear and/or emotional stress? Or typical stuff like upright posture and pain, cold and hypotension, and hypoglycemia and more.

Plus,

Who needs to read all those made-up Bible stories about some silly notion of a “creation week” or worldwide flood? Who needs to read some white-haired old guys writings about humans being made from the dust of the earth? Because that certainly wouldn’t help anybody understand how norepinephrine exerts negative feedback at the preganglionic sympathetic receptors. Am I right?

No, all those simplistic functions going on in just two tiny glands inside your body, which is made up of about 30 trillion cells, are just happening because they need to happen. Let’s not get all Biblical about it.

Let’s just be glad our bodies work the way they do.
And how it’s not a case of why or even who.
Let’s keep evolving till we don’t need all this stuff
Like skin and bones, because our minds will be enough.

Yes, Let’s.

Stay tuned,
