Whiter Shade of Pale and a peek behind the veil

Back in the late 90’s I started a fairly long run of playing music in the casinos in the mountains outside the Denver metro area. And it was weird playing for crowds who mostly ignored me. But the money was great. So, I used the opportunity to add lots of songs to my repertoire. Because I could practice them on stage and most people wouldn’t even notice the rare clinker. One song was a request by the general manager of one of the most popular casinos. He asked if I could play Whiter Shade of Pale. And I told him, “No, but I will tomorrow night.”

So, the next night (after some hours of practice) I played Whiter Shade of Pale, and…

The general manager was so impressed he asked me to play it each set. Which I was happy to do.

And the reason that memory popped into my head was because of what’s coming up in less than two weeks. At about 11:32 p.m. on June 20th to be a bit more exact. Of course you know what I’m talking about.

Yeah, the Christmas in June extravaganza sale!

No. I kid. I’m a kidder. Actually it’s the summer solstice for 2021. And probably the next question that zoomed to your frontal lobe was, “What’s that got to do with Whiter Shade of Pale, Tony?”

Well, I’ll share that with you. But first a little history lesson on the Ancient Greeks, Ancient Romans, Ancient Chinese, Vikings, Native Americans, and Druids. Sounds fun, right? Well, that’s because it’s a ton-o-fun.

OK, I won’t bore you with all the wacky details of all those wacky people. But you should know they sure went crazy for summer solstice. The Greeks flip-flopped the whole masters and servants roles. And they started their countdown to the Olympic games on the day of summer solstice.

The Chinese had a ceremony to celebrate femininity and called it yin. It was a nice answer to the winter solstice to celebrate masculinity that they called yang. Some tribes jumped through fire to predict crop growth. No wonder their language sounds like somebody’s on fire.

The Vikings were more serious and down to earth. They used the time to figure out legal issues and iron out certain types of disputes. But they also go to certain wells for the “healing powers.” And they built huge bonfires there.

Wow, what’s with all the fires in summer?

Now, the Maya and Aztec civilizations were more scientific about it. Apparently they precisely built temples and other structures to line up with the shadows from astrological events. Like summer and winter solstice. Duh.

And the Druids were pretty boring on summer solstice. At least compared to all the rest of these peoples. They just held some rituals to mark the days. And then they went on about their business.

At least the Native Americans were a little more exciting. They had their solstice rituals, too. But they came up with a ceremonial sun dance. They even wore colorful outfits to make it more festive. That’s so native, dudes.

And now comes the connection.

“What connection,” you ask. What? Don’t tell me you’ve already forgotten my reference to remembering Whiter Shade of Pale because of the summer solstice.

Yeah, it’s because of those crazy ancient Romans. And their Vestalia festival. That’s when they paid tribute to Vesta, the goddess of the hearth. And leave it to those Romans to make a bloody ritual out of it. Like when they’d sacrifice an unborn calf right out of its mother’s womb. Plus, it was the only time of the year when married women were allowed to enter the sacred temple of the vestal virgins. And they could go in to make offerings to Vesta.

So. There you have it. The Ancient Roman connection to a song I learned for a general manager of a casino in the front range mountains of Colorado.

Have a great day.

Uh, what’s that you say? You don’t get the connection? Do you not recall the lyrics to Whiter Shade of Pale? OK, for those of you who don’t. Here’s the second verse. And don’t be surprised when thoughts of those crazy Romans pop into your head…

She said, “There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see”
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well have been closed.”

(by the way, I did the Annie Lennox version of the song…for those keeping score)

Uplifting music in a deal that's real close to a steal

I’m gonna share a post I made about my “Raise The Praise” collection of praise and worship music. And you’ll notice I mentioned the CD or the downloadable versions of this uplifting music. But disregard those old school options. Because I’ve got a better, much cooler old school deal for you.

Here’s what I said…

“Most of the time, here on my website, I talk, sing, and write about the things I think you’ll find helpful. And yes…I share from an unabashedly Christian perspective. And most of the time I hardly mention my books and music for sale. But, like anybody working to pay the bills I have to talk shop once in a while. I hope you won’t mind if I do that today, and for a little while.

I’ll be sharing the lyrics here in my articles. In fact, some of the lyrics have been published in some previous articles. But I’ll post ’em again. I’m gonna offer the 12 songs in the downloadable version.

Just pick your favorite way to get songs and click or tap to get ’em.

And, as always, I’d love to hear your feedback. I hope they bless you as much as they did me as I wrote them. And I hope they encourage you to Raise The Praise to your living, loving Creator.”

OK, here’s the cooler old school deal for all this uplifting music.

Here’s the description on Amazon.com – From the acclaimed Christian singer/songwriter, Tony Funderburk. This collection of praise and worship songs is hard-hitting, introspective, powerful, and uplifting. Songs include…

  1. You Are
  2. Give Me What I Deserve
  3. Your Love Restored My Soul
  4. I Give You All
  5. Shine In Your Glory
  6. In the House of the Lord
  7. Our Father’s Day
  8. Still Small Voice Inside
  9. Because I CAN Love
  10. Consequential Servitude
  11. Your Body Your Blood
  12. Give Me The Whole Jesus

And you get access to all these songs when you buy the songbook journal. Yep, all the lyrics to all the songs. And a super secret link in the back where you can download mp3 versions of all the songs to your favorite device.

Did you notice I said songbook journal? Yeah, it’s also got a bunch of pages you can use for your own thoughts. Maybe take sermon notes at church. Or jot down some uplifting inspirations you get when you listen and sing along with the music. Whatever and however you journal, here’s one built in to a songbook.

Could you possibly find a better deal anywhere else? Are you kidding me?! No way! But it’s not for wimps.

As my good friend, The Legendary Perry would say…it’s just good science.

Get Raise The Praise today. If you’re unable to click the link, copy the url, in between the parentheses below, and paste into your browser bar:

Bedbugs bite, but not in the starlight

Sleep tight. Don’t let the bedbugs bite. Did you ever hear that when you were a kid? Or, for that matter, any other time? As it turns out, that’s not just a sweet, little thing to say to kids that rhymes. Because bedbugs are real. And they don’t seem like characters for nursery rhymes.

Check out this bullet list description for why you shouldn’t let the bedbugs bite.

The adults are…

  • A little under a quarter inch.
  • Sort of brownish insects.
  • Relatively flat.
  • Wingless or with “vestigial” wings.
  • Equipped with 4-segmented antennae.
  • Freakish-looking with a 3-segmented beak.
  • Covered with short, golden-colored hairs (setae) arranged in bands.
  • Short-timers because they only live about a year.

So, next time you put the kids to bed…or somebody tells you goodnight…get serious. Because if any of those little critters are around, it’s gonna get a little uncomfortable.

But you might have a better fighting chance against them if you wear your…

Music Pajamas

It’s time…to let the daylight fly
Away, but we don’t have to cry
Because…another day will dawn real soon.

So smile…and say a sweet goodnight.
Sleep well. Don’t let the bedbugs bite.
They won’t, if you’ll just slip into this tune.

And wear your music pajamas.
And sing the songs of your mamas
Because they gave you a life of your own.
Through all the cartoons and dramas”
Through all the triumphs and traumas”
Slip on your music pajamas,
And know that God is on His throne.
And you’re never all alone.

Night winds…float down from falling stars.
Lights blink…from Jupiter and Mars.
They bounce…across the water on the grass.

Inside…you’re in a soft cocoon
Of down…the color of the moon.
Dreams come…when you just let the sandman pass.

Chorus…inst…chorus

Think back and talk some smack

Yesterday I wrote about a nostalgic memory. And I talked about June bugs. If you didn’t catch that post, check it out. But now I want you to think back in your own life. And go as far back in your past as you can. Because I want you to see yourself as small as possible.

OK, are you there yet? Way, way back to when everything was left up to “the grownups.” Can you see it? Great.  Now”pick up where you left off. And this time, get it right. and pass this on to as many of your friends and family as possible. Because if we can get enough of us to go back, start over, and do it right, we can change the world.

Now, as far as I can tell, there’s only one possible flaw in my theory. Keep in mind, I haven’t worked this out on even a singular level. But work with me here. Because I’m not talking about leaving your adult brain here.

No. Think back to that time and take your adult brain with you.

I know…in fact, I’m willing to bet…most of you have seen enough Marvel movies to understand the validity of my theory. Sure, there will be time travel naysayers. But they’re just cosmic killjoys who wouldn’t know an excited molecule if it was in their own brain.

So, you and I are gonna have to carry the weight of this adventure on our own brain power.

Because, I don’t know about you, but I’m particularly fed up with virtue signalers and cancel culture creeps. And zapping back to when they didn’t exist sounds mighty inviting.

Matter of fact, I think if we just zap…uh-oh.

I think I dozed off there for a couple of minutes. And my fingers kept typing. Must’ve been typing out something deep in my subconscious. Oh great. Now, I gotta go back and edit this before I post it.

C’mon man.

Well, sorry about that everybody. Here’s a few rhyming lines you can read amongst yourselves while I edit. (Oh brother, I gotta get more sleep tonight.)

Is there a day you go back to when you think of better times?
Or do you think that day is somewhere up ahead?
But either way it’s a day when all your cares will melt away,
And then your life will be fulfilling dreams instead.

Well, let me say, I’m for living with that hope inside your heart.
I do believe in looking for a better way.
But cares won’t go until you know your Creator loves you so.
That’s how the better times you need begin today. ~Tony Funderburk

June bugs, watermelon - It's nostalgia I'm tellin'

Did you ever watch The Waltons? Either when it was a new show or in reruns? Either way, do you remember how the kids would run out the front door and the screen door would smack shut? That’s because those old screen doors were lightweight and had long snakey springs. And I remember both sets of my grandparents had screen doors like that. And I also remember how, when the summer months rolled around, June bugs would fly up to and latch on to those screens.

You know what June bugs are…right?

A more scientific description might say they’re “a group of scarab beetles distributed across North America.” But a kid who used to play outside in the summer in Oklahoma might say, “Those are big bugs with scratchy legs that fly into things and land on Grandma’s front screen door.”

Sure, if they grab onto your skin, it feels a little creepy. But they never hurt anybody. At least nobody I knew. But they sure left a memory in my head. Enough of a memory that I used a June bug metaphor in one of my songs from the 80’s.

Then, I re-worked that song, from basically a boy meets girl love song, to a praise song. Yeah, it’s do-able. But you gotta know what you’re doing. And, after years of practice, I know what I’m doing.

Of course, you might not like the song. That’s OK, if you’re willing to reveal your lack of good taste. But for everyone with good taste, here are the lyrics…

Drawn To You

Maybe it’s Your grace.  I don’t know.
It could be Your Word.  I’m not sure.
But You have a way of refining my thoughts.
Your Will is my strength. Your Will is my cure.

Anytime it’s me making it up
Show me I’m wrong to just forget You.
You barely lift a finger, and You change my whole direction.
What else can I say?  What more can I do?

I’m drawn to You
Like a June-bug to the light.
I’m drawn to You
Like a boxer to the fight.
I’m drawn to You
Like a sweet tooth and ice cream,
And it may all sound extreme,
But I’m drawn to You.

Maybe I’ll wake up…maybe soon
And find You take me home…Who can say?
“˜Til then I’ll live it out…’til then I’ll follow through
And see how many more might feel the same way.

Chorus

Jesus, help me, won’t You take me to my heart’s desire?
Nothing could mean more than having You to be my fire!
Take me higher…draw me near.

Chorus…instrumental…repeat chorus to end

Addition and subtraction make sense with liquefaction

As I reached the end of 5th grade, and was about to leave elementary school to attend junior high, I was told I’d be put into “accelerated classes.” My teacher sent me home with a note to my parents that said I was “gifted” in addition and subtraction, grammar, and learning skills in general.

That addition and subtraction part was ironic, though.

Because if you go back one year, to my time in the 4th grade, there was a couple of days when “gifted” would not be the right word. Drifted or shifted, maybe. But definitely not gifted.

Well, to be a little more clear, the addition and subtraction parts weren’t my downfall. It was long division. For anyone who hasn’t lived enough decades to know, long division is something you do without the use of your smartphone or some other calculator.

And I remember my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Dunaway, taking extra time with me. Because she could see there was something I missed. Or overlooked. And she was pretty sure I visually created a mental block. So, she figured maybe I needed to see the problem from a different perspective. And she let another student show me how to work a long division problem.

So, I watched the other student go through a long division problem. And after a couple of times, something clicked and I “saw” the answer to my mental block. I had just looked at it with a flawed preconception.

But once I let that go, it all made sense.

That’s how it is with preconceived notions, ideas, and theories. They’re not necessarily all wrong. But they can slow down or even shut down the facts and the truth.

For example, after the theory of evolution was suggested, back in the 1800’s, geologists thought layers of fossils indicated the age of the fossils. In other words, they figured fossils in the lower layers of sedimentary rock must be older than fossils in the upper layers.

So, they came up with their fictional version of history they called the “geologic ages.”

And their timelines and timeframes got longer and longer. Because even then, plants and animals were complex enough they couldn’t have evolved in just a few hundred or even several thousand years.

No, the numbers would have to be closer to 70-400 million years. And because of their preconceived assumptions, they (so-called “scientists” and “geologists”) end up chasing their own tail. (aka circular reasoning…aka tautology)

Those geologists from way back then, and even many (if not most) of them nowadays, didn’t and don’t factor in liquefaction.

Sounds like something out of Marvel comics movie. Right?

But liquefaction is just a hydrodynamic mechanism that sorts stuff during a flood. Hmm…a flood? Now, where have I heard about a flood and fossils before? Oh yeah, in the Bible. The most unscientific book in the history of the world. Unless you consider the mountain of evidence to the contrary.

So, addition and subtraction
Show the truth of liquefaction
When your preconceived refraction
Turns to well-designed attraction.

Stay tuned,

Fear driven choices will take away free voices

“There’s been a global oblivion to the idea of treating Covid 19.” That’s a quote from Dr. Peter McCullough, who was a guest on Tucker Carlson’s show. He also said patients wanna know, “Dr, what happens if or when I get Covid 19?” And he went on to say how much of this mask and vaccination culture is “fear driven.” Which, as a Christian, I find more than a little ironic.

We don’t have TV in our house. So, I hadn’t seen or heard of Dr. McCullough until my friends (and my The TRUTH subscribers) Ken and Jo Scott, sent me a link to Tucker Carlson’s video interview of the doctor. (Thanks, K&J) I’ll share a link to the video, below.

First, it’s important to know…

Fear driven choices and actions play into the hands of control freaks.

If you’re fine with giving control of your life to people who couldn’t care less whether you live or die, then, by all means, let fear drive your choices. But your fear will not drive MY choices and actions.

Fear should never (with a capital nev) override facts and/or faith.

Because that kind (and level) of fear will almost always lead to less freedom. And, unless you’ve been living in the Amazon jungle, or on the moon, or under a rock, you’ve noticed less freedom. Around the world. And right here in America. We’re supposed to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. Not the land of decree and the home of the slave.

I said how, as a Christian, I find this fear driven culture more than a little ironic. And that’s because of how God tells me to “fear not.” Do a search for those words in your Bible app or online Bible (I recommend Logos or Biblia). You’ll discover how your Creator wants you to be bold and brave.

But like your other choices, God won’t force you to be brave and fear not.

If you prefer to hand the control of your emotions over to control freaks, you can do that. But that choice hasn’t gone well for people throughout history.

And it won’t go well now, either.

Do another search for the word, control, in the New Testament. My search returned 10 results. And every one of them was about SELF control. Not the control of others. Just a little food for thought.

And here’s a little more food for thought. Watch this video and listen to a doctor who has written over 600 peer reviewed articles in medical journals. Then, let me know your thoughts.

And just in case the video doesn’t show up in your email, here’s the link: https://youtu.be/F7cLxs8fNq8

Uncomfortable conversation with a quickly fading nation

Yeah, it’s an uncomfortable conversation to have. The one about what’s happening behind closed doors and tall walls. Doors and walls that close behind foolish people going in…and behind damaged people coming out.

Some people have spent much of their lives having that uncomfortable conversation.

And it’s mostly a one-sided conversation. Because hard hearts lead to closed ears. And closed ears lead to eternal actions. And those eternal actions typically lead to more hard hearts.

It’s a vicious cycle that’s been going on, “legally,” here in America for decades. Of course, I’m talking about our own holocaust. Abortion. It’s something that should never have been “legalized.” And it’s something that changes lives forever. In ways most of the guilty parents will never imagine this side of Heaven.

And, back in 2010, I wrote a song about the so-called “guards” who stand behind those tall walls. It’s a somber song with a harsh message. So, it’s a musical version of the uncomfortable conversation.

If You Stand Behind That Wall

There’s a wall here between life and death
Where the unborn are denied their first breath.
There are guards here making sure that life ends
And they don’t care that they’re killing our friends.

Well you can’t plead ignorance…You don’t stand blameless
When you stand in the middle of it all.
As you discard the innocent
You shake foundations.
If you stand behind that wall, you will fall.

There’s a clear line between right and wrong.
Listen close, please, to the words of this song.
We were all, once, where those babies are now.
Mothers kept us…we all made it somehow.

Well, the martyred little ones
Your choice keeps nameless
Never had any single choice at all.
Please don’t discard the innocent
They’re God’s creation…
If you stand behind that wall, you will fall.

You will fall from Grace
To a hopeless place
With eternal, mournful cries.
And the sound you’ll hear ringing in your ear
Is the sound of your own lies.

chorus

Change the course and go with the force

Way back in 1978, my brother and I moved back to Texas, from Kansas. Because we wanted to be close to my Dad who’d been diagnosed with terminal kidney failure. And he was told he had a couple of years to live, at the most. So, we figured it would be a good idea to be around for whatever time he had. But we had no idea how that move would change the course of our lives. Or what good friends we’d make.

When I say “change the course,” of our lives I mean changing it all.

I had been working in a lumber yard in Kansas. So, when I got to Houston, I found work as a trim carpenter. Well, it was paid training at first. Then, I got paid for my new carpenter skills. And I worked in that industry for about the first year we were back in Texas.

But during that first year, my brother and I started playing and singing some songs for our friends around the pool of the apartment complex where we lived. And, as it turned out, those friends multiplied. And before long we had what you might call “a regular Friday and Saturday night crowd.”

Our friends told us we should audition to play some of the Houston nightclubs. And we thought that sounded like even more fun than sweating in houses swinging hammers all day. So, we decided to get a sound system, some mics and mic stands, and give it a go.

But we ran into a problem.

To get the kind of good sound system we needed to sound professional, we’d need more moolah than we had. And since we were still fairly young, and new in town, we had no credit. So, we were stalled out.

Until…

One of those friends, from around the pool, stepped in and offered to let us put a sound system on his new credit card and pay him back.

I, for one, was amazed. Because I hadn’t known this guy all that long. And I only knew him as a real nice guy. So, his offer was over-the-top generous, as far as I was concerned. And we took him up on it.

And we started playing, for our friends around the pool, through our brand new sound system. With mics and everything. Golly gee Wally…we were one step away from goin’ pro.

Then, we started going to auditions and getting rejected. But eventually we were hired. Then hired again. And again and again. During some of that time, our benefactor learned to operate our sound system. And when he could, he’d be our sound man.

We got custom band t-shirts with our band name on them: Funderburk (cool name, right?) And we got our sound man a t-shirt that said, “I’m with the band.”

OK, I’ll change the course and condense the rest of the story.

My brother and I had a couple of stints as a duo. Partly good. Partly not. And we eventually went our separate musical ways.

But that sound man, benefactor, pool audience friend became my roommate. Twice. And I still consider him one of the best friends I’ve ever had. 43 years later, we still keep in touch every once in a while. For special occasions. Like Christmas, 4th of July, and even birthdays. Which brings me to the point of this post…

Happy Birthday JACK! It’s your birthday today (May 28), so do your birthday dance!

As far as I’m concerned you’re still “with the band.”

(psst…I can hear Paul McCartney…what’s that he’s singing in the background…?)

Accidentally on purpose where bad science can't usurp us

Paramecia don’t become parakeets. And an amoeba will never be an ambulance driver. Not in a million, trillion years. Because changes like that don’t happen. Not by accident. Not on purpose. And certainly not accidentally on purpose.

Accidentally on purpose used to be a joke, when I was a kid.

But we didn’t imagine how serious that whole “accidental” thing would be. We were just kids playing around with words. Then, one day the kid stuff disappeared. And words started to mean so much more.

And I learned I was like none of the other creatures on Earth. Then, I discovered there is a God who loves me. A Creator who made me in His image and His likeness. But even then I didn’t fully realize what that meant. I had no idea there would be so much scientific evidence to prove the existence of a Designer.

But I was thrilled when I found out more about how we all got here. Because, without a Creator, all this creation doesn’t make sense. There’s no purpose. Accidentally or otherwise. And like I’ve said for years…

If matter’s all there is, then nothing really matters.

But atoms and molecules and protons, electrons, neutrons, enzymes, and amino acids aren’t the actual foundational building blocks for life. Life is here as a result of infinitely complex information. And that information comes from THE living, loving Creator. It makes me accidentally on purposefully glad I’m a…

Child of the Living God

I am not a silly chance”
Not a random circumstance.
I am not a lucky dance
In an accidental place.

I am not a spark of light
That evolved from darkest night.
If you say I did, I might
Have to make a funny face… “˜cause…

I am a child of God…child of the Living God…
The One who spoke and made the universe.
I am a child of God…child of the Living God…
The One who saved me from my sinful curse.
(repeat)

I did not come out of slime.
That would take way too much time.
You can clearly see that I’m
A whole lot more than simple dirt.

Take a closer look and see
Information runs through me
From The One Who sets me free.
Listen now to my alert…

Three years ago, around this time of year, I sent a sad and happy song out into the internet. It was in response to a request for me to write a song for a young man battling cancer. A friend of mine, on social media, told me about Jeremiah. And I’m glad. Because before that I’d never heard of him or his battle or even his make a wish request.

So, I told my friend I’d look into the story to see if I could come up with something.

As it turned out, Jeremiah had written a prayer that he shared online. And, as I read the prayer, I could see a good way to manipulate the words into lyrics for a song. So, without him even knowing it, Jeremiah co-wrote a song to honor him and his battle with cancer.

And when I shared the video on Facebook, it received over 19,000 views. Then I shared it on YouTube. And it’s almost 600 more views. People really connected with the uplifting young man in a battle for life.

Before I share the song, there’s another part of the story.

Jeremiah was approved for Make A Wish.

You know what that is, right? Where someone who’s dying can have a “last wish” granted. And apparently Jeremiah decided to make his wish for unborn children instead of himself.

That’s mighty cool. And Jeremiah’s actual wish was for a phone call with Texas Governor Greg Abbott. And his phone call wish was granted. Matter of fact, it was videoed and shared on social media. I found this quote from Jeremiah during his call…

“For my wish, I wanted to talk with you and discuss a bill of abolition,”he said. “A recent poll showed that 68 percent of Texans want abortion abolished, so Sir, you’d be represening the demand of Texans if you passed this bill. In conclusion, we just want you to treat abortion like an act of murder and it should be punished by law. For my wish, I just wanted to say that to you…We could end abortion here now and at least for me, it would make my wish complete before I pass.

Governor Abbott told Jeremiah that his wish, “is on the Republican party platform position and that’s what we’re going to be pursuing this next legislative session and that is to outlaw abortion altogether in the state of Texas. And so your wish is granted.”

Unfortunately,

Like too many compromising politicians, Governor Abbott did not live up to his word.

And Jeremiah Thomas lost his battle with cancer on August 26, 2018. So, he knows, more than any of the rest of us, how many innocent lives are stolen every day. Here in America. And around the world. Even though promises are made.

Because most people don’t have the courage found in…

Jeremiah’s Prayer

I don’t deserve your healing Lord.
But you deserve my praise.
Your great name and your Word
Will lift me up and fill my days.
Oh Lord, please give me strength
So I can fight this battle well”
And courage even satan will
Remember down in hell.

You’re the breath in my lungs.
And you’re the song upon my tongue.
You’re the source of life no doubters can erase.
And through sickness and health,
Lord I consecrate myself
And I just can’t wait to see you face to face.

No one deserves your healing Lord.
But you deserve our praise.
Your great name and your Word
Will lift us up and fill our days,
If we will look to you for strength
And courage to declare
The love and Truth about You
Found in Jeremiah’s prayer.

Bad is bad when it's this sad fad

I think Huey Lewis and the News sang it best, back in the 80’s, when they sang “I say cool is a rule, but sometimes, bad is bad.”

What? You don’t remember that song? Then, move along. Because you’re probably not old enough to be reading this.

So, you surely won’t understand how sometimes bad is bad.

And Huey said it was “sometimes” because back then, if something was good, the hip thing to call it was bad. (Kids say the darndest things.) But Huey pointed out that, you know what? Yeah, sometimes bad is still actually bad.

Like bad ideas.

For example, how about wearing a mask and constricting your breathing even when it’s not “mandated.” Yeah, it WAS a bad. And it still IS a bad idea. And yet, it looks like most people are still doing that.

My wife and I saw dozens of people doing that, while we enjoyed a dinner break at a restaurant. Young, healthy people were the main ones wearing them, too.

If you’re one of those people, here’s a short note to you…

Don’t misunderstand me. If you choose to live in fear of a virus with a survival rate over 99%, that’s your business. And if your fear tells you to wear a cloth mask that doesn’t protect you and, in fact, can make you sick and compromise your respiratory system, that’s your own business.

But stop telling everybody, who chooses not to live in fear, to put on a mask. And stop telling those people aren’t living in fear that a mask or a vaccination is “science.” Especially with those sickening, undertone implications that those people don’t know or follow science.

Your so-called science is bad. And so is your data. And your attitude.

We can’t both be right on this. So, one of us (who is not me) should dig deeper. Because news anchors, celebrities, sports stars, and lots of politicians lie about what’s going on.

And scientists and doctors who actually care about your health want you to know the truth. But they’re shut down, daily, by the tolerant beautiful people who don’t want you to hear both sides.

So keep on waddlin’ with your pants all fallin’ down.
Like a good, little red comrade.
And keep believin’ that the vaccination is good.
Yeah, but sometimes “good” is bad.

Stay tuned,

I’m reminded of a sound bite from a presidential debate between Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter. Carter presented what he thought was a good case against then Governor Reagan’s position on Medicare. And when Carter finished, Reagan started his counterpoint by saying, “There you go again.” And then he pointed out the flaws in Carter’s statements.

But what did “there you go again” mean?

Well, in that set of circumstances, Reagan wanted the people to understand Carter’s straw man arguments. Reagan told the people he wasn’t against “helping the people.” But he had seen another “piece of legislation” he liked better. Because he believed it would help people more.

While I despise Carter’s policies, and I admire Reagan’s communication skills, they were both wrong.

Because you don’t “help the people” by taking tons of their money and then trickling some of it back to them. That’s called stealing. And no pleasant-sounding names will change that fact.

Medicare, medicaid, and all the other so-called “healthcare” programs and and “welfare” proposals prove another former President wrong. Donald Trump made speeches where he proudly declared, “America will never be a socialist country.” But America has been a socialist country for decades already.

And just this week I’ve seen political pundits saying things like, “Elections have consequences.” And, “Be careful what (or who) you wish for.” Because they see America going further down the tubes.

But what the vast majority of people don’t understand is that “elections” are doing exactly what is to be expected. Because “elections” have moved so far away from Godly principles they’re doomed before they even start.

“Elections” will never solve our problems because the vast majority of people punch their tickets and run through the wide gate to destruction. So, a political system based on “majority rule” is ultimately doomed.

And that’s yet another reason why I sang…

Be Careful What You Wish For

You’ve got a house and your privacy;
A brand new car; you’re in the driver’s seat,
But you believe there’s a bigger dream you have to follow…
And so you work for your daily bread
And wish for something that could get you ahead
Because losing the race would be such a hard pill to swallow

Be careful what you wish for…
Look out “˜cause it might come true…
You never, ever really know what’s in store
So be careful…be careful what you wish for

She feeds the kids and sends “˜em off to school
She never breaks or even bends a rule
But in her mind she’s convinced that something is missing
And so she spends what her husband makes
And doesn’t think about the toll it takes
Her mother tried to tell her once, but she wouldn’t listen

Chorus
Now that old world can get its hands on you
But only if you stop and let it
You have the right to change your mind
But somebody might just regret it…don’t forget it

Chorus to end

Bandwagon effect you can help to connect

You might have heard of the bandwagon effect. Especially in politics. An online dictionary included this information about it: “It is often used in a mildly negative way as a criticism of those who started following such a thing simply because it was popular or only after it had become popular or successful.”

And the bandwagon effect can be very positive, too.

That same online dictionary added this, too: “If you jump on the bandwagon, you join in with the many people who follow, support, or are fans of someone or something popular and/or successful (especially when it is growing in popularity).”

In addition to politics, people “jump on the bandwagon” for popular trends, TV shows, and sports teams.

And some even jump on the bandwagon for entertainment and entertainers.

“Yeah, see honey. I told you he’d get around to talkin’ about himself.”

Well, yeah. But it’s a subject I know more about than anybody else…except God, of course. So, naturally I talk about myself once in a while. Cut me some slack.

But the reason I’m talkin’ about me (sort of) today is to ask you a favor.

If you like the content I share with you…and if you think it has value for others, too…would you share my email signup link with those others? I’m just a small, one-man operation (with some help and lots of support from my one woman, too) over here.

And I’ve now written thousands of articles, produced hundreds of podcast episodes, and shared thousands of emails. And I could sure use your help to get more people to jump on the The TRUTH.

Forward this link to anyone and everyone you think would jump on:

Ancient age appears when clocks miscount the years

What if you reached your prime, let’s say around 33, and someone told you that you look old? It wouldn’t exactly make you feel great. Even if you’re totally confident in who you are, and in your appearance, you don’t wanna look old before your time. And I bet mother Earth doesn’t like all this talk about her ancient age either. I mean, c’mon man…show a little sensitivity.

Because mother Earth’s so-called “ancient age” is based on bad timing.

And all it takes to make Earth seem really old is to just pile on more years. And that’s easy. Just use bad clocks. And measure wrong.

I used to be a full-time finish carpenter. And I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying, “Measure twice, cut once.” But, hidden in that saying, is the implication that you’ll use an accurate tape measure. Or some other form of measurement. Because if the device ain’t accurate, the measurement won’t be either. Once, twice, or more.

So, if scientists are gonna theorize the age of the Earth, they should use accurate measurements. And not the slow clocking data they’ve used for too long (pun slightly intended).

For examples…coral reefs and stalactites and stalagmites.

People, who call themselves unbiased scientists, say coral reefs and stalactites and stalagmites take hundreds of thousands of years to form. So, Earth must be old. But, as it turns out, other scientists have discovered that, under favorable growth conditions, they can form in 3400 years or less.

But you won’t hear many of those unbiased scientists sharing that new information. Because it all points to a young planet. Don’t they care how happy mother Earth would be to hear the news?

No. Not so much. Because a young Earth couldn’t have just exploded into existence. And life couldn’t have evolved in such a short time. They know that. And they also know that young Earth data points to what they consider to be the silly notion of creation. And, of course, creation implies a Creator.

Uh-oh! Now we’ve gone off the deep end.

“Next thing you’ll be tellin’ us is that God created everything literally in 7 days.”

Actually, no. He created everything in a literal 6 days. But you were close.

And much closer than your miscounted millions of years.

In awe of all creation and how it all could be
The fairy tale illusions increase with every year.
The wrinkled plans expand”exponentially”
Until one day, perhaps, a duck becomes a deer”yeah, right.

(from the song “Fast Forward”)

The end of humanity and the definition of insanity

God? Or environmentalists? Where is your trust? Let’s say God told you something like, “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.”Would you believe Him? Or do you put your faith in those who’ve been incorrectly predicting “the end” of humanity for decades?

Um…I’ll take “the end of humanity” for $200, Alex.

*buzzer sound* Ooh, sorry. Wrong answer.

Because God actually DID say everyday life will continue, normally, for as long as the earth remains. And the earth will remain until God gets rid of it. And He WILL get rid of it one day.

Now, of course, I know, when a heathen…aka, an unbeliever…comes across an article like this, he or she will scoff. Because it’s not the hip, trendy thing to believe in God. Especially when you can become like a god practically overnight on YouTube or Instagram. (psst…you can lose that status overnight, too)

But it’s not a good idea (translate: it’s stupid) to disagree with God.

Everyone, who ever did, lost that debate. And everyone who ever does, will, too.

But who cares? Right? Why does it matter whether I’m right for saying the earth is gonna be OK, or you’re right for saying the sky is falling as we speak?

Because.

Ideas have consequences. Wrong ideas lead to bad science. And bad science leads to bad ideologies. And surely you can see the vicious circle forming here. Sort of like the definition of insanity.

But good ideas lead to good science. And good science can find cures for cancer. Or the discovery of information encoded into your DNA. Those kinds of discoveries point to a Designer. Because the incredibly complex design found in one human cell could not have happened accidentally.

Sure, accidents happen.

But you’re not one of them.

So, I hope you’ll learn to see
How your own humanity
Shows you’re loved beyond what you can comprehend.
And that love can take you where
Nothing else can quite compare…
To a place where your own life will never end.

Murder mayhem and madness beat up on tidings of gladness

Ah, yes. Diversity, equity, and unabashed tolerance. That’s what you get when you mix a whole lotta different kinds of people together in one place. Right? And you just better brace yourself for gobs of group hugs, too. Because peace, love, and joy overflow where masses of people go. (cue the record scratch and bubble pop sound effects) Uh, get real. Because this is about murder, mayhem, and madness.

And I’m not talkin’ Alfred Hitchcock or Stephen King murder, mayhem, and madness.

I’m talkin’ real stuff. With real people (and I use that term loosely) doing real bad stuff to other people. Yeah, that kind of murder, mayhem, and madness.

I read an article, from last week, that talked about it. An adjunct professor from John Jay College of Criminal Justice (I’m sure they know less than they think they do) said homicides and shootings are already ahead of last year’s pace. And the professor also said the problems seem to be mostly in cities.

What?! Can that be? With all the politicians, Hollywood celebrities, and sports “stars” sharing messages about putting differences aside, how can that be? I’m baffled.

Except…

I’m not.

Even though the professor, who’s also a former sergeant for the NYPD, said summer months bring out more crime because there are more people out there.

Oh, I see. If you let people go outside, the heat will cause them to do some bad things.

He even said that since the pandemic is ending people will want to get out and do stuff. And he thinks that’s “just a cocktail for disaster to some.”

Wow, I remember some mighty hot summers in the South and Midwest where I grew up. But people didn’t tend to blame crime on the weather back then. I guess they just didn’t know better, yet.

But I got news for you.

Weather ain’t the problem.

When you read stats on a website that say 369 people were shot in the past 72 hours, your first thought shouldn’t be to check out the week’s forecast on your weather app.

And when you read about how New York City’s murder rate increased by 350% compared to the same time frame last year, it’s not time to buy more sunscreen.

And when you discover there’s a website that archives what they call “gun violence,” don’t schedule an appointment with your air conditioner technician.

Weather ain’t the problem.

No, you can cite stats and quotes and hypotheses till the cows come home. And you still won’t be a nanometer closer to the cause of all the murder, mayhem, and madness.

Most (if not all) adjunct professors (and professors of most colors, creeds, and characters) are clueless when it comes to Why. So, the best (if you can call it that) they can postulate are solutions like more jail time and more analysis…both psycho and data.

Or worse, they play the blame game. But they blame intangibles like lawlessness. Or social disadvantages. And even “increased perception of police illegitimacy.”

But if you’re gonna blame anything, blame sin. Or more to the point…sinners. People who don’t care that we humans are created in the image and likeness of God. People who couldn’t care less that every single one of us comes from the same race. And the same two original humans.

Yeah, when you raise kids to believe they just evolved from animals, you get kids who act like animals. Duh! And animals kill and eat other animals. But they do it merely to survive. Not because they derive some sick pleasure from seeing the other animal die. That’s evil reserved only for the human “animals.”

I know I’m on a rant.

But, as you know (if you’ve followed me for a while), I’m an optimist. And I don’t like to leave you with negative thoughts. So, I’ll just leave you with a suggestion your Creator inspired the Apostle Paul to write.

“If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.”

And…

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

What can cause stress and make life a mess?

Apparently a lot of people go online to find out what can cause stress. And that makes sense. Because a lot of people (if not most) are stressed out. But I seriously don’t think you need to ask Google or some social media crowd what can cause it. Well, not if you’ve got at least a little wisdom.

Because wisdom will show you life without God is what can cause stress.

And, yeah, that even goes for you Mister or Miss I-Don’t-Believe-in-God. Matter of fact, you’re gonna feel the stress way more than someone who trusts in the One who made us. Don’t believe me? Well, skip your skunk for a while. And wait till the fog clears in your head.

Then, look into it. Really check it out. And you’ll either go where the evidence takes you, or keep singin’…

What Can I Do?

I want to dream, but I can’t even get to sleep.
And I want to run, but I’ve got promises to keep.

I don’t mind the struggle, but I’m tired of the fight
I don’t want to stand still while the day turns into night

But what can I do?
I’m only one man.
I’d love to see peace in this life.
But I don’t have a plan
Tell me what can I do?
I’m only one guy.
I’d love to see love conquer all and hatred run dry.
But what can I do?

Tell me what can I possibly do?

I want to laugh, but I can’t even seem to smile.
And I want to win, but I don’t even make the trial.

I don’t mind the darkness, but I do prefer the light.
I don’t want to stand still while the day turns into night.

Chorus

Katharine Hepburn won the awards but lost the rewards

She was named by the American Film Institute as the greatest female star in the history of American cinema. And she won the Academy Award for best actress…four times. More than any other person in American movie history. And I read that Katharine Hepburn was a leading lady for more than 60 years. That’s mighty impressive. And I’m a fan of several of her movies. But not her worldview.

Sadly, Katharine Hepburn said she was an atheist.

In fact, I saw a quote, apparently from the October 1991 Ladies’ Home Journal, where she said, “I’m an atheist, and that’s it. I believe there’s nothing we can know except that we should be kind to each other and do what we can for each other.”

First…I wonder how she could know that. And second, it’s not that unusual for one person’s “kind” to be another person’s cruel. Because humans are some pretty wacky creatures.

Ms Hepburn did an interview with a TV talk show host, Dick Cavett, and she said, “No I don’t think you go anywhere when you die. I hope you just lie in the ground, happy, at rest at last. I don’t feel the slightest interest in the next world, I think it’s here. And I think anything good that you’re going to do you should do for other people here and not so you can try to have a happy time in the next world.”

To her credit, she did give Jesus a little respect.

She said, “I don’t believe in religion. I believe the example of Christ.”

But then she messed it up by also saying,

“I believe in the example of a perfect human being that if you can live for other people away from yourself you will be happy. If you live for yourself you will be unhappy and then you will not be able to sleep or do anything else… finally. I think insofar, and I really believe this, insofar as people do live with the other fellow [God] in mind, they have to be happy you know? Because it raises you up.”

So, Katharine Hepburn was her own benevolent and good god.

And she expressed her belief in her own abilities to be a supreme judge. With words like this…

“Now I hear people say they don’t know the difference between good and bad. I know totally for myself the difference between right and wrong. Totally. I know this because wrong makes me very uncomfortable and right makes me very happy.

And I don’t think it’s so very difficult to know when you’re doing the right thing and when you’re doing the wrong thing. And I think each person the right thing and the wrong thing varies. But committing a stinking act to someone else should make you unhappy, if it doesn’t you are diseased, and you certainly are miserable.”

She was sort of right.

You should be able to know when you’re doing the right thing and when you’re doing the wrong thing. Trouble is, for most people the wrong thing has become right. Because they don’t have any wisdom or discernment. And they certainly don’t wanna see or hear what God says about it.

So, I hope Katharine discovered where she missed the mark before she died. Because she was quite an extraordinary person. But extraordinary never got anyone into Heaven. And it never will.

In fact, Heaven will be filled with ordinary
People who aren’t stars who win awards.
But they’ll find their life, there, extraordinary,
Filled with God’s eternal Love rewards.

Stay tuned,

Music and mercy, there's no controversy

Music and mercy aren’t synonyms. Except that, they kind of are. Well, at least in one way they are. And I have that one example for you. But first, let me share a little story.

During my freshman year in high school, I was an introvert’s introvert. Didn’t want attention. I had just gotten my first pair of glasses during the preceding summer, and I was still in accelerated classes. And I had the nerd thing going on, big time. So, I was ecstatic to stay in the background.

Fortunately I had something in my life I could always turn to for comfort. Music.

And I’d surround myself with it. Not the same kind of music most of my fellow students enjoyed. Because most of that wasn’t allowed in our household. But most of that music had some sort of connection to drugs, etc. Since I wasn’t involved with drugs (etc.) I wasn’t “missing out.”

So, what does this have to do with music and mercy?

Well, somewhere around the age of 13 I became a Christian. And even though I was still too young to fully realize the benefits of that decision, I was able to appreciate the power of God’s mercy.

It surrounds you and protects you even better than your favorite down comforter on a cold, winter night. Because it doesn’t simply surround your body. God’s mercy surrounds your heart and soul.

And it can be a place to “hide.” From your enemies. And from the troubles of the world.

As it just so happens, another famous musician felt the same way about music and mercy. And he wrote about it 2500 years ago. Give or take a few years. You might have heard of him. King David.

And in Psalm 32, a song about God’s forgiveness toward David, he said, “You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.” See? He sang about God surrounding him with songs. Then, a few lines later, he said,

“Many sorrows shall be to the wicked; But he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround him.” See? There he sang about how God can surround you with mercy.

So, mercy isn’t exactly synonymous with music. But they’re both gifts of God’s forgiveness. And they can surround you the same way.

All you gotta do is ask.
And take off your worldly mask.
Give a little joyful shout.
Drown the daily troubles out.

Stay tuned,
