Has anyone ever told you something like this: “You messed up my whole day!”
Yeah, depending on who it is, who says that, it can sure mess up your whole day.
But human beings are just pretty darn good at doing that kind of stuff. We come by it naturally.
In fact, it’s pretty easy to find a reason to tell somebody you messed up my day.
Think not? Well, I’m gonna give you seven reasons you could mess up my day. It could be a simple as…
- You called me when I asked you to text.
- I’m working at my desk and you ask me if I wanna go for a walk in the middle of August.
- I hear you knock on my front door and we don’t even have an appointment.
- My egg custard is missing from the refrigerator.
- Somehow, my shoes aren’t positioned correctly next to the bed.
- There’s a great new burger place that serves grass fed beef, and you suggest a seafood dinner.
- For some reason, you decide that I need to know your favorite country song.
See what I mean? That’s only seven reasons. The list could go on endlessly. And that’s only my list. There are billions of people on this mostly uninhabited planet with their own lists. And the hits just keep on comin’.
All because of the lack of one little four syllable word. Humility.
When you think, or at least act like, you’re the center of the universe, it becomes child’s play to mess up your day. And that can be avoided, or cured, with humility.
Humility is a key part of spiritual growth and wisdom.
I compare humility to a drive in the Rocky Mountains. If you’ve never been to the Rockies, you might not completely relate to this analogy, but it’s like this. Many roads going over passes have multiple switchbacks (sharp turns where you can see where you’ve been, and where you’re going, from one position). And you can see other vehicles way up the mountain side. The further up, the tinier they appear.
You get a real sense of just how small you are in this world as you observe even 18 wheelers looking like toys on those winding, mountain roads.
That’s how it is with humility and humble pie.
Hopefully you’ve come to a point in your life (or soon will) where you realize there IS a God, you’re not Him, and His eternal attributes dwarf your own finite life. That’s what Christians are talking about when they say “humble yourselves before God.”
But most people don’t want even a sliver of humble pie. They’ve already lifted themselves too high (they feel) to have to submit to some so-called higher will or power or intellect. And that’s a shame because they miss out on the best part of humility…where God lifts you up.
Go make the most of every day
In everything and every way.
Believe in changing things for good
As any caring person would.
Be like a little secret elf grief
And love your neighbor as yourself.
When you’re the apple of your eye,
You need a slice of humble pie.
It isn’t good, but it’s divine.
I know that’s true ’cause I’ve had mine.
So have a slice, and then you’ll know
God lifts you up when you are low. © 2014 TF
