Wimpy song that no man will sing along

Contemporary schmontemporary Christian music. Most of it could easily be mistaken for another “Top 40 love song.” And most of it is unmanly, to say the least. And real men, in church, won’t sing along with a wimpy song.

So, who’s to say what a wimpy song in church is?

OK, I’ll go first. One of the signs of a wimpy song is when it’s led by a young man in a medium to high, breathy voice. Another sign is when a line, or section of the song, is sung over and over and over in mantra style. And then, top those signs off with a message based on feelings and not the powerful truth of God’s word.

Yeah, those kinds of songs shouldn’t be considered “praise and worship.”

And there are lots of people who question how churches have gotten to this point. In fact, I read a discussion thread where a woman made this comment about the music in a church service she attended:

“I went to a Southern Baptist Church recently. There were more women than men. The pastor was a young man. The music was a blend of traditional hymns, set to jazz/rythym and blues/rock/contemporary music. I think the singing was led by a large, bouncy woman. The sermon was about stuff like, women being different from men, but not inferior to them and sprinkled with a few anecdotal stories about pastor and his wife. Later there was a potluck (high point).”

That describes a lot of churches in America.

Maybe yours. More women than men. Music (and even the main message) led by women. Anecdotal stories rather than valuable nuggets of wisdom direct from God’s word. And those are ingredients to a recipe for spiritual disaster in the house of God.

But I get it. When real men (aka older, wiser) won’t pick up the banner and lead, those positions of leadership go to women and younger men who will. And that’s not how God says He wants it to be.

But let’s remember…we’re nicer than God now. And He doesn’t have to live in our current world. So, how could He possibly know what we’re going through? And what our spirits need?

Yeah, now that I think about it, forget everything I just said. Because I put my faith and trust in God’s word. And that’s been translated so many times, so many ways…by men. So, there’s really no way to know if we’re singin’ wimpy songs or offering powerful praise and worship.

Gosh, I feel so embarrassed that I even brought it up.

Please forget you ever read any of this. Sing whatever you feel like.

Have a nice day.

Stay tuned,
