The Silver Horse again

Tony Funderburk Posted on August 29, 2012 by TonyMarch 19, 2025

My goal is to have 9 or 10 songs for the “Bedtime Buckaroos” lullaby songs collection. Currently there are seven completed songs you can hear on my lullaby songs page. Just click on the buckaroos music player and listen for free. This evening I wrote the words and worked out a melody for song number eight: “The Silver Horse”.

Sometimes I have just the tiny grain of an idea when I sit down to write. Like this time.

I knew I wanted to call this song “The Silver Horse”

(I’ll tell you why I knew later when I complete my diabolical plan) But I didn’t know what the story of the song would be. So…I let my mind “drift”, and sure enough the very first line had the word “drifted” in it.

Once the first line showed itself to me, I began to form a picture of where I wanted the story to take place. I almost went with the high plains, but another idea popped into my mind…an idea of humility. And that made me think of the prairie. I used to live in Kansas, and I remember a lot of fine, humble Americans there. Not humble like timid…humble as in not boastful and self-serving.

Well, once I had a location I just started picturing what would be there, and the scene started to materialize in my mind. I’m sure just about everyone knows about the fields of wheat and rye and clover in the prairies of Kansas. So I made sure they were in there. And I made the actual star of the song be the smallest creature.

You can’t hear it yet, but here are the lyrics. Let me know if you think it works…
