I started writing lullaby songs for kids back in 2008, and they became a crowd favorite. So I wrote a whole collection of ’em in mostly a smooth jazz kind of feel. And I called it “Lullabye Bye”.
The first song was one of those nice moments when a song just pops out. The title “In Your Dreams” has been used so much to mean something besides a lullaby. I figured why not take it back to lullaby land. I envisioned the narrative of the song to be a mom singing her baby to sleep. (of course it could be a dad…hey, I’m a guy, and I sang it) Anyway…you can read more about the story behind the lyrics HERE.
The second song in the collection was a result of a lyrics collaborative effort I had on former website of mine: Ton-O-Fun Tunes. I asked readers to fill in blanks, or add lines, or suggest rhymes etc. And the final version became “Peppermint Pony“. In addition to a candy horse there’s a lemon star, watermelon mountain, and lots of chocolate and vanilla.
The third song in this particular songbook journal is called “Feather Dance.“
If you’ve ever seen the movie “Forrest Gump” you may remember the feather dancing. If you haven’t seen the movie and don’t know what I’m talking about, rent it and you’ll get a visual feel for this instrumental song.
Fourth song in the collection is “Rest Easy“. It talks about things a kid might do during a typical day of serious play. And then it brings the pace down to a calm, collected figurative pat on the back.
The fifth song, “Now I Lay Me Down” is a take on an old stand-by bedtime prayer…do you remember?
“Now I lay me down to sleep…I pray the Lord my soul to keep.” I wanted to capture how even when a kid is dog tired, he doesn’t want to go to bed. But I also wanted to add how good it feels to finally give in to sleep.
The sixth and seventh songs, “Lullabye Bye” and “Drifting Off” are instrumentals, and I put them in the middle of the mix to get the sleepy time mood moving along.
Eighth song of the collection is called “Fall Fast Asleep“.
It’s my personal favorite of the bunch. I’m a sucker for songs in minor keys. And another thing I like about this song is that it could be sung to anyone…not just kids.
The ninth song is called “Blue Celtic Cloud“. If I asked you to guess how the title came to me, you might be able to if you watch PBS at all. Every so often they run a special on “Celtic Woman”. Those ladies are awesome vocalists, and they have beautiful, elaborate stage sets. One of their presentations had a theme in blue…so there was the title. Then I added a words that talked about spring and Autumn…the best seasons in Celtic lands. After that I composed a melody that had to include a recorder with an Irish lilt. You’ll have to listen to make up the rest of the story yourself.
Finally I finished the songbook Journal collection with another instrumental “Milky Way Bouquet“. I just put music together I thought would have a nice feeling of tumbling through space toward dreams and rest and peace. After I listened to it a few time and thought about it I could just imagine drifting through the Milky Way. And there you go.
