What if I create a talking toad or a laughing lizard? Kids are just fine with that. Silly is cool with them. Make a quirky character, and they really just don’t care. And if the hero’s only 1 inch tall, most of them don’t care at all.
Silly is cool. That’s the silver rule.
Did you catch my drift when I made that shift? Yeah, I could’ve said golden, but that sounds so olden. And, I think there’s a lot of “rules” for writing that need breaking.
Especially when I see how many different kinds of books and authors are a huge success. That makes me wonder who made up the “rules.”
For example, there have been lots of times I’ve read blurbs from bestselling books, and I just don’t get the success. And other times I’ve found very enjoyable books from writers with basically no success. Go figure. (seriously, go figure. I’ll wait.)
Anyway…
Enough of that rabbit hole. Let’s see, if I remember correctly, I was talking about how silly is cool. In fact, there have been grown men who became famous for their silly entertainment for kids.
Guys like Dr. Suess and Mister Rogers. I think we could have been friends if we lived during the same times in history. Sure, I know I’m no Dr. Suess or Mister Rogers. But I can confidently say they were no Tony Funderburk either. And we’re all pretty similar when it comes to…
Being Silly
You could shine just like a diamond in sunlight.
You could be a star and light the whole dark midnight.
And you could be a daffodil or tiger lily,
But nothin’ quite compares to being silly.
You could make a frown and wrinkle up your whole face
You could walk into a room and freeze the whole place.
By why would you want to make someone so chilly,
When nothin’ quite compares to being silly?
You could be a superhero on a mission
Or a fairy helpin’ people with their wishin’.
You could make a funny face at Uncle Willy.
Yeah, nothin’ quite compares to being silly. © 2013 TF
