Backbone of DNA on this sunny Sunday

OK, I’m gonna get a little too sciencey for the kids right now. And I’m share some info I found about the backbone of DNA. And I think it’s interesting because we all have DNA. So, it’s kinda cool to know a little bit about it.

Here’s what one article said:

“A phosphate backbone is the portion of the DNA double helix that provides structural support to the molecule. DNA consists of two strands that wind around each other like a twisted ladder. Each strand has a backbone made of alternating sugar (deoxyribose) and phosphate groups. Attached to each sugar is one of four bases: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), or thymine (T). The two strands are held together by bonds between the bases, with adenine forming a base pair with thymine, and cytosine forming a base pair with guanine.”

“Golly gee, Wally. That all sounds so accidental and random.”

Yeah, right.

And that’s just the so-called backbone of DNA.

There’s still a TON of information inside those tiny little doodads in your body that determined the color of your eyes, your hair, and even whether you’d be cool or lame. OK, I made that last part up. But the rest is true.

Here’s the reason I took the time to write any of this down on a Sunday, when I should be drinking beer and watching some kind of sports event or movie. Because the backbone of DNA reminds me of the backbone, center and heart of my existence. And yours, too, by the way. Here’s what I mean:

Imagine if you used Jesus’ name in sentences with those words. It would look like this:

Jesus is the backbone of our family.
Jesus is the center of attention in our house.
And Jesus is the heart of God’s love for the world.

When you think of Him that way, you might say He becomes your chief cornerstone. And every structure needs one of those in order to last a long time. Hopefully, forever.

Here’s a rhyme to help kids remember. You can sing it to the tune of “If you’re happy and you know it.”

Jesus is the one true cornerstone,
The center of my love and my backbone.
He holds me up in grace. His light shines on my face.
He’s in my heart. I’ll never be alone.

Before you go, jump on the The TRUTH. And join the growing band of believers who enjoy my books, daily rhymes, songs, and videos about the Rhyme and Reason and power found in God’s love.

Stay tuned,
