If it ain’t got a beat, then it just ain’t no treat. Of course, I’m talking about that ever-popular writing style known as sonnet poetry. And man is it ever manly! In fact, that’s the main ingredient to stylish poetry and prose. Manliness.

But, before I harp on that, check these facts about sonnet poetry.

First, it’s got da beat. Well, purists might call it meter. But whatever. The point is (according to some sources), the beat comes from a “pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables that creates the rhythm of lines of poetry.”

And the units of meter are named “feet.” So, for example, an iamb foot is a word that uses an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. As in de-light. The opposite of an iamb is a trochee. As in po-et. But lines in a poem are also defined by the number of feet they have.

So, let’s say you write some poetry using iambic pentameter. That means you have five sets of iambs (penta means five) per line, for a total of ten syllables. And that’s a pattern a lot of sonnet poetry has employed over the years.

Hang in there. I’m getting to the manly part.

Next, though, is the rhyme scheme.

Sonnets tend to use what are called “end rhymes.” And those are just what you’d expect. Words at the end of sentences that rhyme with words at the end of other sentences. And they do it in a deliberate, recognizable pattern.

Rhyme schemes can use letters of the alphabet to reveal the pattern. So, let’s say you have a four-line poem where the first line rhymes with the third. And the second line rhymes with the fourth. You’d call that rhyme scheme ABAB.

Finally, the lines in a poem that uses iambic pentameter typically contain ten syllables. And that’s considered decasyllabic verse (deca means ten).

OK, did you catch the manliness in all that? I hope so. Because a REAL man would. And that’s because manly men will NOT FAIL to see the complexity in the poetic design. Manly men will clearly see that poetic design flows, ultimately, from Original Design.

And that, of course, implies (translate: outright says) the Original Designer exists. Because the intelligence it took to even come up with the terms “iambic pentameter” and “decasyllabic verse” could never have originated in primordial goo.

Combining that knowledge with some inspiration from a beautiful photograph I came up with 14 decasyllabic lines I call…

Sunset Sonnet

My liberated heart can spread its wings
And consume these smoky sunrays today.
My thirsty eyes soak in all the splendor,
Before this mountain moment fades away,
My mind enters this twilight lucid dream
And pauses to create a déjà vu.
A thousand thankful thoughts rise up to God,
Who helps me write this short story to you.

The words become a precipice to me,
A rocky peak of pictures in my brain.
Reality or not? Now, I wonder
How long I’ll wander through this vast terrain.
Long enough for me to write this sonnet,
While the setting sun’s light is upon it.

Nestled in Nature in this nomenclature

A social media friend of mine shares some amazing photography. The colors are often so brilliant and high resolution they almost jump off the screen and directly into my brain. Lately (for obvious reasons) many of the pics are focused on Autumn. One of them, that popped up only yesterday, was titled Nestled in Nature. And I’m a huge fan of alliteration. So, I added a poem to the photo. This is it…

Nestled In Nature

Nestled in nature, in evergreen fire,
A small cabin sits in its Autumn attire.
Some leaves have fallen and many remain
For just a while longer, to sing a refrain
Whispering breezes have brought to this place.
It’s so solitary and so full of Grace.
A scene so serene you might wonder why
The world goes berserk in the blink of an eye.
Answers are simple, and life can be, too.
Your Creator wants to restore it in you.
Silence and music, in sync and in tune,
Reveal His love from this burnished doubloon.

© 2022

Maybe you’re not a fan of poetry. And maybe alliteration doesn’t rock your world. That’s OK. The finer things don’t find themselves in the hearts, minds, and lives of everyone.

But I hope you ARE a fan of truth.

Because even the colors of Autumn shout out the reality of your Creator. And the reality of His love for you. And me. But, sadly, most people care about God’s love just about as much as they care about Autumn leaves. Just something to be raked or burned away.

And, ironically, that leads to a terrible fall much longer than Fall.

Brain cell connections that follow directions

Play

I read another article about brain cell connections to music. Yeah, I’m a nerd when it comes to that kind of information. And I love a quote from that article that said, “Neurons that fire together, wire together.”

Of course the scientist who said that was talking about how brain cells communicate with each other by “firing” messages through junctions called synapses. And when those cells connect, regularly (as they do when a musician   is practicing or rehearsing), they can build strong bonds into a complicated circuitry. And, according to the article, that’s how an “efficient network” is built for skills such as singing.

But those are brain cell connections in a healthy brain.

And since music therapy is more widely recognized as truly helpful, there are some programs out there working to see if music can benefit unhealthy brains. Such as the arts and humanities program at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. They decided to let musicians-in-residence play throughout the hospital.

Palliative care nurses often let a well-know cellist, there, play for patients who are anxious or in pain. And they can watch monitors to help them match the music’s tempo to heart rates. Then they work, in sync, to gradually slow dow the tempo and gradually ease the patient’s anxiety and heart rate.

I think that’s mighty cool.

And sometimes musicians play for the dying patients. By design, they choose gently arrhythmic background music. Not a song that might be familiar. Because the familiar can lead to heart-wrenching memories. And that defeats the purpose of these special brain cell connections to music.

A director of Georgetown’s program, said she wondered if they could research the type and dose of music for different health situations. And she added, “If we can study the arts in the same way that science studies medication and other therapeutics, I think we will be doing so much good.”

I agree with that.

And I believe it’s do-able because God is real. I know. I know. I’m always directing the conversation back to God. But it’s because He’s the source of life. And He designed all those complicated neurons that wire together for healthy brain cell connections. So, it’s only natural that, since He wants us to have abundant life, He also designed everything so that we could.

Not all brains function properly. But that’s a result of rebellion. And that’s another topic for another time.

Here’s a poem I shared, directed toward kids from 3 to 93 that talked about brain health.

Good For The Brain

Why should we care about the wheels on a train
Or the wings on a plane
Or the links in a chain?
What in the world would we ever have to gain?
That’s easy…it’s good for the brain.

Why should we think about the cars in the lane
Or the ankle we sprain
Or the clouds and the rain?
Listen up now ’cause I’m trying to explain…
I told you…it’s good for the brain.

Why should we look for the sugar in the cane
Or the chicken chow mein
Or the blood in the vein?
Why should we see what the data might contain?
It’s simple…it’s good for the brain.

Why should we try to ease somebody’s pain
Or clean up a stain
Or sing a refrain?
What could we ever really hope to obtain?
Just do it…it’s good for the brain.

Second class, but not on this pass

Let’s see. There was one bassist. Three cellists. Three violinists. And one pianist. Yeah, that about covers it. An eight-piece ensemble that started out, in second class, as a three-piece ensemble and a five-piece ensemble.

Second class were their accommodations. Not their character or talent.

Yeah, these were the kind of classy musicians who played for teatime gatherings. And other sort of hoity toity concerts in venues such as the À La Carte Restaurant and the Café Parisien.

I doubt you’ll recognize any of their names even though they’re famous.

  • William Brailey
  • Roger Bricoux
  • John Clarke
  • Wallace Hartley
  • Jock Hume
  • Georges Krins
  • Percy Taylor
  • John Wesley Woodward

They all played their last gig on the same night. And now you might be starting to recognize I’m talking about the musicians who played while the Titanic sank.

According to reports I’ve read, only one of their bodies was recovered. The rest were lost in that cold northern Atlantic ocean water in the wee mornin’ hours of April 15, 1912. But they were all considered to be heroes because they played almost to the very end so people would stay calmer.

Can you imagine a rap group or heavy metal band able to do that?

Of course, they could in a Hollywood movie. Because Hollywood loves to portray the most despicable characters as the ones with the hearts of gold.

But real life is real. And rap and metal don’t calm nerves. Quite the opposite, actually. And more often than not, the “musicians” from those genres would have no interests above their own.

Classical music, on the other hand, appeals to the deeper emotional sections of your brain and heart. Maybe that’s because wooden, stringed instruments do a better job of tugging at your heartstrings. And maybe because melodies that flow from those instruments do more than just repeat a beat and a vowel.

OK, I fully admit I have a musical bias. And I believe some genres don’t even rate seventh class status. Much less second class. But it’s because I want music to do what only music can do best.

And that’s to talk to you without words.

Speak to your soul. And connect you with the inventor of music.

Music is the nearest we can come (for now) to hearing the voice of God. But I don’t believe that stuff that demeans women, propagates violence, and is infused with profanity is music. And I sure wish everyone would stop listening to it so we might have a better chance of more survivors on this Titanic planet of ours.

Support musicians who trust and talk about Jesus. I know that sounds a bit self-serving. But I certainly don’t mean you have to support me. Just be mindful of what goes in your ears. Because, if faith comes by hearing, then it’s pretty important what you hear.

Wait a minute, wait a minute, there's something new in it.

Play

95 years ago, today, October 6, a quirky little guy said, “”Wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain’t heard nothing yet.” And the crowd went wild.

You probably already know I’m talking about Al Jolson. And you probably already know he was the guy who made movie history when “The Jazz Singer” premiered as the first “talkie.”

Yeah, after all those silent movies, with their subtitles to explain the dialogue, people were ecstatic to be able to hear movie stars talk. Because there’s just something about sound. And, in quite a few of my articles, I’ve shared some of the wonderful benefits of sound.

But wait a minute…

I think it’s important to go over a few of them again. Because it seems like there’s still a lot of stress out there.

So, first, there’s the whole relaxation aspect of sound therapy. The right kinds of sounds can sort of soak into your system and help to restore your equilibrium. Physical and emotional. Some of the more metaphysical types would say that “sound healing helps you find your harmony.” A little dippy skippy. But I won’t dis it completely.

I’ve seen multiple sources say that sound healing can help improve your sleep, ease chronic pain, and lower blood pressure. Wait a minute! I thought only doctors and meds could do such amazing things. OK, what about cholesterol and heart disease, smarty pants? Well, yeah. Sound healing supposedly can help lower those, too.

Yeah, but those are physical ailments. What’s sound gonna do for stuff like anxiety, depression, and the ever-present, soul-destroying stress? Three words for you. Re duce ’em. Not only those mental health benefits, but also balance, clarity, and a new and improved sense of purpose.

These thoughts surfaced in me, today, after an hour solo drive.

I had an opportunity to scan through local FM radio stations as I drove. Most times I drive without music so I can concentrate on the words and music that always swirl around in my brain. But today I decided to check out the local radio. And it was a huge disappointment. Station after station of template tunes. And tons of commercials.

Until…

I finally landed on a classical music station. Aahh. A big portion of the drive was one orchestral composition. But I didn’t get to finish it. Because it was Franz Schubert’s famous “Unfinished Symphony.” (side note: it’s basically a guarantee that Franz didn’t name it that)

But here’s the thing. Classical music (not all of it) is your best shot at the health benefits or so-called “sound healing.” Because only classical music contains enough movement and differentiation to occupy enough of your mind for your body to benefit. Wow, that’s a mouthful when you say it out loud.

Anyway…

If you’re looking for an alternative to pharmacopeia, supplementia (I made that up) and doctoroddicies (I made that up, too), look no further than classical music.

Oh yeah, there’s one more benefit of sound that trumps them all. Faith. And I mean actual trusting faith in the one, true, living, loving God who created you. There’s even a famous quote that says, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Just some sound food for thought.
That’s about all I’ve got.
Except to say I know this way
Is one that should be sought.

(don’t wait a minute more if you haven’t already checked out that quote)

Stay tuned,

Evolution of music, and this will make you sick

Play

Hey, you know what would be a lotta fun? Let’s talk about the evolution of music. Are you with me? But let’s don’t do it in my boring musician way. Let’s start with a discussion about it I found on a government website. Yeah, I’ve got your undivided attention now. Right?

Check out this interesting paragraph on the evolution of music.

“Music is a core human experience and generative processes reflect cognitive capabilities. Music is often functional because it is something that can promote human well-being by facilitating human contact, human meaning, and human imagination of possibilities, tying it to our social instincts. Cognitive systems also underlie musical performance and sensibilities. Music is one of those things that we do spontaneously, reflecting brain machinery linked to communicative functions, enlarged and diversified across a broad array of human activities. Music cuts across diverse cognitive capabilities and resources, including numeracy, language, and space perception. In the same way, music intersects with cultural boundaries, facilitating our “social self” by linking our shared experiences and intentions. This paper focuses on the intersection between the neuroscience of music, and human social functioning to illustrate the importance of music to human behaviors.”

OK. Quick question.

What did that paragraph say?

Besides starting four sentences with the word, “music,” it also thoroughly facilitates a lot of cognition. And let’s not leave out the diversity. Never leave out the diversity. (side note: seems like an article that DIDN’T talk about diversity would be very diverse from most other articles)

Anyway…

If you go with the dictionary definition of the word “evolution” then, of course, you’d have to be impressed with the evolution of music. My handy digital dictionary says:

“the gradual development of something, especially from a simple to a more complex form”

And all you have to do is start with something simple, like, let’s say, Handel’s “Messiah.” Just a snippet of musical composition by a simpleton from the 18th century. Sure, it’s divided into 3 sections that each contain multiple scenes comprised of dozens of other sections. And sure, the music was composed for an orchestra at a time when every part had to be played by a corresponding musician. Oh yeah, the composition included a wide range of vocal parts. And those had to be sung by corresponding singers. Yeesh. What a mess.

OK, now let’s move to music with a “more complex form,” like, let’s say, Kanye West’s “Bad Guy.” Well, actually I won’t share the lyrics because they’re too vulgar. And the beat is repetitive, to say the least (and the least is what I prefer to say). But obviously it’s a more complex form.

Because…duh…evolution of music.

And because “nigga” is so high-brow.

Please avoid 99.9999% of all rap lyrics/songs. Because they are NOT an evolved level of music. They are about as far away from music as you can get.

But I didn’t share this to razz rap.

It’s just a symptom. The underlying disease is a hate culture sowed and reaped in a government controlled education system. From kindergarten to college (and beyond) kids are indoctrinated to believe they’re just another animal. They evolved from a “lower form of life” and they’re no better or worse than a reptile.

That culture of hate is, at its core, aimed at God first. And then at you and me, or any who love God. And the culture of hate says it’s OK to steal from “the rich,” assault the elderly, and murder unborn babies.

Too bad music hasn’t evolved enough for a singer/songwriter to write a song or two against this culture.

Oh, wait a second…

Stay tuned,

Bedtime routine is that time in between

Play

Just about everybody has a bedtime routine. It makes sense. Because humans are creatures of habit. Like brushing your teeth and changing into pajamas. Those activities just become something you do without having to put a lot of thought and effort into them. And then maybe you read a little and turn off the lights.

Boom. You’ve got a bedtime routine. Good for YOU.

And you might think that’s insignificant or unimportant. But nay nay. It IS important. Especially for kids.

According to one source I read, it’s much healthier to make bedtime “as pleasant and calm as possible.” And that source said a regular, predictable schedule is the best option. It also said, “All of the scientific evidence shows us that babies with a consistent bedtime routine sleep better and longer than babies with an inconsistent (or non-existent!) bedtime routine.”

It’s good for babies in the womb, by the way.

Also, I found out there are actually sleep consultants these days. Yeah, I know. You’d think nobody would need to consult somebody else on how to sleep. But obviously, you’d be wrong.

One pediatric sleep consultant said that a good night’s sleep for your child begins with a bedtime routine. She even has a website with online courses and 1:1 coaching sessions. Wow. Who’d’ve thunk it? Anyway,  she recommends parents “sing a song” (preferably the same song, she says) at bedtime.

OK, sing a song. But what song?

“A calming song, sung in a soothing manner, either while the child is rocked in the parent’s arms or patted in the crib, tends to work well,” is what the expert said. And she added, “The important thing is to keep that last soothing step as similar as possible from one day to the next. Predictability in itself is soothing for infants and young children.”

Imagine that. Even the smallest kids love and appreciate dependable, loving care.

The article I read said there’s no reason to stress if you don’t know which songs to sing. The little ones just need to hear your voice. And they added a link to a “curated lullaby playlist.” But there’s no need to go anywhere else. Because your ol’ buddy, Tony, has already got you covered.

Just in case you’re new around here, I have some original lullabies that thousands of American families (and even some in other countries) have enjoyed for years. Best part is, they’re not cutesy. Like one kids’ store owner said, “They’re not the typical kids songs you hear everywhere else!”

I’ve heard good things from parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, store owners, and others. So, I know babies, infants, toddlers, and kids benefit from lullaby songs. That’s why I’ve written and produced so many.

The first collection I put together is called “Lullabye Bye.”

And I published a sing-along coloring book with all the lyrics to that collection. Best part is, there’s a super secret link, inside the book, where you can download all the songs. So, kids don’t just get a fun book. They also get free songs to go with the lyrics.

Click or tap any of the links to get the book for a special kid today. And when those little ones lie down, they’ll Fall Fast Asleep, Rest Easy, and ride a Peppermint Pony through the Blue Celtic Clouds. Then, when they wake up, you’ll enjoy watching them sing-along as they color and draw in this fun book. Works like a charm. Or, as my good buddy, Greg (who has an impeccable bedtime routine) likes to say, “It’s just good science.”

Stay tuned,

Tony Funderburk signature logo

P.S. I know these lullaby songs aren’t necessarily the most appropriate Halloween gift. But somebody said there’s supposed to be another holiday before the end of the year that might be way better. Can’t think of what it is, right now. But I’ll get back to you. Or you can let me know what it is if know.

Church moves and a singer reproves

I’m happy to celebrate when a church moves in the direction of rightly dividing the word of truth. But you almost never see that anymore. In fact, most establishments calling themselves churches move in the opposite direction. Sometimes the move is speedy. And often it’s slow enough to be almost unnoticeable.

Like when a report says a church moves by the hand of God.

On the surface that’s not a terrible statement. After all, God could easily move a church to a different location just by telling it to be moved. He’s God. And a church building is hardly a weighty matter to Him. So, why would He need or want a flood from a hurricane to move a church?

Short answer? He wouldn’t.

But here’s a report I read about how God used the forces of nature to move a church from one location to another. It’s a fairly long story. But I’ll share a couple of points at the end. Here’s the quoted report:

“I’m talking about a tropical storm that hit the coast of the United States over a hundred years ago, in the year 1876. As far as I know, it was never given a name, but someone should have called it “Faith” because God used it to move a mountain (well, not literally, but you’ll see what I mean).

I first heard this remarkable account from a worship leader who traveled with me in the ministry. He became aware of the story, because one of his uncles pastored the church for a season—the church that was involved in the amazing miracle I’m about to share.

It was a typical country church—with long, white side-boards and a high steeple—in a quaint coastal community known as Swan Quarter, North Carolina. At some point it was named Providence United Methodist Church. I suppose, because of the providential way it finally ‘found’ its place in the world. The people in that region reminisce with travelers who come through the town, calling it,

“The Church Moved by the Hand of God.”

Let me give you the details. In 1874, a group of saints in that waterfront area decided to build a new gathering place for their growing congregation. The leadership felt impressed to place the building on a specific lot, prime property in the main area of town owned by a man named Samuel Slader.

Unfortunately, when they approached Mr. Slader, he adamantly refused to sell them the property. So they reluctantly opted for a different and less-desirable location. Then right before their dedication ceremony, the miracle happened. A hurricane came up the coast and about five feet of water surged through their community. The historical account, verified on the Snopes website, reads:

‘During September 16-17, 1876, on the eve of the edifice’s dedication, a hurricane blew through the area. Pamlico Sound engulfed Swan Quarter, sweeping the sanctuary off its foundation. A Providence United brochure tells what happened: A miracle was happening — the church was floating down the road. The church ‘moved by the hand of God. It went straight down the road to a corner and bumped into a general store owned by George V. Credle. The corner is now Oyster Creek Road and U.S. 264 Business.’

The building took a sharp right turn and headed down the road for about two blocks until it reached the corner of what is now Church Street. Then it moved slightly off its straight-line course, took another turn to the left, crossed the Carawan Canal directly in front of the place where people desired the church to be, and settled exactly in the center of the Sam Sadler property, the site which had been refused. Before it settled, witnesses said it miraculously rotated around to face the street and there it would stay!

Needless to say, Mr. Sadler changed his mind and sold them the property—property the church founders felt God wanted them to have at the start. Can you imagine the shouts of praise that went up to heaven when the congregants found out what God had done? The answer to their prayers gave fresh relevance to an age-old prophecy:

The LORD has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet. (Nahum 1:3)

In the wake of the devastation many have faced over the past few weeks, in the U.S. and the Caribbean islands, we should remind ourselves of this verse and ask God to ease the pain, the loss, the hurt by once again using such a tragedy of nature to somehow further His divine purposes in us.

It may be very difficult for those who have lost so much to see past the piles of soggy sheetrock, throwaway lumber and piled-up, useless furniture, but we must believe that somehow, some way, our loving heavenly Father will providentially move for those who believe. If He did it in Swan Quarter over a century ago, He can do it for you today.”

OK, Tony here again. And I hope your head is shaking back and forth in disbelief. Mine is.

Because that story might make an interesting tale around a boy scout campfire. But it shouldn’t be shared by Christian adults who should know better.

God does not “further His divine purposes in us” by flooding our lands, destroying and properties, and killing people. Yeah, the story glossed over all that. Right? But read the weather reports about the 1876 hurricane season. And you’ll discover a storm that killed at least 21 people, washed away a bridge, and damaged who knows how many properties. Uh-huh. All to make sure a church moves down the road.

That doesn’t sound like the same God who said, “never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And that passage from the Old Testament prophet, Nahum, is a description of God’s awesomeness. It’s not an explanation of how He uses nature to destroy people and property. As Charlie Brown would say, “Good grief.”

No, the one who calls Himself the Living Water doesn’t need to drown anyone to move a church. In fact, I believe He’s WAY more interested in seeing how (and if) we’ll move a church. Feel free to disagree. But tell me why.

He’s living and He’s life. He’s personal to talk to.
Relational with every son and daughter.
He’s good and so much more. He’s loving to the core.
Jesus is the Living Water.
And each time a soul is saved all the angels above sing,
“Our God is living, personal, relational, good, and loving.”
(from my song “Our God Is LPRGL”)

Breath of life is the answer to this quiz

It’s unimaginably cool. But you and I actually have the breath of life from God in us. Uh-oh. I’ve already given you the clue that’ll probably make sure you get an A+ on this pop quiz I’ve got for you. I know. Nobody likes a pop quiz. But, no worries. Because I KNOW you’re gonna pass it now.

OK, here’s the introduction to and the breath of life pop quiz…

I noticed how God created the Earth, separated the water from dry land, put “lights” into the heavens, and blessed the ground with all the plants that could reproduce “according to its kind.” Then He created all the land, sea, and air creatures and gave them the ability to reproduce “according to its kind.” And lastly He created Man. But He did something different. And, here’s your one question pop quiz.

What did God to Man that He didn’t do to all the rest of the creatures and creation? ________________

Remember, you have only 30 minutes to complete your quiz. And then turn your papers over on your desk and remain quiet while the others finish theirs. Unless you’re last. In which case, what took you so long?

Anyway…

When it describes the creation of humans, the Bible says “And then the Lord God formed man of the dust of the earth, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.”

He didn’t do that to any of the other creatures.

Have you ever pondered that nuance between humans and every other living thing? It was written almost like just another line in the creation account. But it reveals how unique the human design is.

When I went through the Genesis account of the six days of creation for a writing project, that “breath of life” thing jumped off the page at me.

Only humans received life that way. His very essence entered into us and us alone. And only humans were made in the “image and likeness of God.” No other creatures.

We’re unique. And even though more and more people act like animals, that’s not how we’re designed.

That person you see in the mirror has the breath of life from God.

And I think you know that. But maybe somebody you know doesn’t know that. If so, and if you care about them (and you should), tell them their last breath will exhale from them sooner than they imagine. And tell them they’re only free to decide what happens after that before it happens. Not after.

He’s my shepherd through thorns and thru clover.
He’s my new wine, and my cup runs over.
As I walk through the shadow of death,
I will sing till my very last breath.
(from my song “In The House of the Lord“)

Begin at the beginning and start winning

You’ve been a person your whole life. If you’ve lived a few (or several) decades, hopefully you’re getting pretty good at being a person. Yeah, it’s an ongoing struggle. But somebody’s gotta do it. Right? But let’s begin at the beginning and see where it takes us.

Even if you can’t say for sure when your life started, you know without a doubt, the human form you now inhabit, had a beginning. Still with me?

Seems mighty simple to me. I think any person should be able to wrap their brain around it and agree.

But tens of millions of people can’t begin at the beginning.

And those people (I know you’re not one of them. Right?) choose to ignore the evidence that’s a plain as the nose on Adrien Brody’s face. But that willful ignorance is not without terrible consequences. Because tens of millions of other people were killed in the name of that “choice”. Those people were denied the same basic freedoms everyone of us hopes to enjoy. Life, liberty, etc. It’s shameful. And that’s just in America.

Former President, Ronald Reagan, said: “I notice everybody that is for abortion has already been born.” President Reagan didn’t always choose well on the abortion issue. But I think he understood how, for anyone to become a person, you gotta begin at the beginning. If he didn’t fully understand it back then, I know he does now.

But here’s the point he was making. You’ve already been born.

Why not let others enjoy that right to life?

Our country, the world, needs to abolish abortion. Not just make up policies with fluffy sounding words that basically say, “Just do this and this and this and THEN you can kill the baby.”

And people will say, “If we abolish abortion, women will be forced to seek ‘back alley clinics’ and there’ll be no place to receive a safe abortion and the care they deserve.” Of course, that’s a moot point. Because there’s no such thing as a safe abortion. In every procedure a human being is killed. How safe is that?

But, naturally, when you can’t see that your life began in your mother’s womb, you’re liable to fall for any so-called “pro choice” propaganda.

So, here’s a wacky idea. Let’s make “choice” a beautiful word again.

Let’s choose to recognize how even the tiny, single-celled human being, who was just conceived, has a right to fully develop and be the person they were designed to be. And to at least have a chance at this life. Sure, it can be tough. But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. (mic drop)

 Choose life

Well you hid your heart in a so-called safe place,
And you locked your love in a big, black box,
And you had no hope,
But you built your brave face,
And you ran your rat race…through the tics and tocs.

Well, the bluebells bloomed in ideal intentions
As you tilled the truth into lifelong lies,
And you dug in deep making many mentions
Of your pretty pensions…always alibis.

You can’t run away from real truth.
And every word of truth is a knife.
A captivating voice might pigeonhole your choice,
Cut free…and choose life.

When your daydreams die and you feel half-hearted,
And your love is lost in a soulless sky,
Try to train your thoughts when your brain’s bombarded
By the stuff you started…learn to love the lie.

Choose life…choose life…choose life

Fish breathe underwater. But you and I shouldn't oughter.

Imagine if you could breathe underwater. Just think of the places you could go.

How do fish breathe underwater?

Well, they actually have a wonderfully designed system of gills that capture the oxygen from the water as it passes through. So fish don’t have to hold their breath like you and I do.

But what if you didn’t have to hold your breath?

Yeah. What if the gill slits you have during your time in your mothers’ womb could turn into real gills when you’re born? That would be so cool! Then, you could go for a swim and dive down to the bottom of the lake or river or ocean and stay down there as long as you like.

Oh wait a minute…

One tiny glitch in that scenario.

You don’t have gill slits as you form in your mother’s womb. I almost forgot. Oh sure, when you’re just a tiny embryo, you have tissues that might look a little bit like gills or gill slits. But those tissues don’t have anything to do with breathing. They actually turn into parts of your face. And bones in your ears. And glands.

Here’s how the confusion started…

Some silly guy named Ernst drew some goofy drawings and told some fibs about how humans go through phases, in mom’s womb, that resemble stages of evolution. What a knucklehead. Just when I thought we could figure out how to use our own gills to explore the ocean blue…out comes the truth.

Oh well. Even if you can’t breathe underwater, you can take an imaginary trip through the deep, blue sea. And you don’t have to hold our breath. And you don’t have to identify as a fish. Fish breathe their way. But your way is way better. Just be you and enjoy the journey.

Here’s a rhyme to get little minds of mush (your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, etc,) started off in the right direction when it comes to origins.

I want you to come with me
Down in the deep, blue sea
Where a sea horse grins and spins its fins
And says we can swim for free.

We won’t have to stop for air
The whole time we’re under there.
We can breathe like fish if we make a wish.
It’s a make-believe we’ll share.

So tell me, what do you say?
Would you like to go today?
We can tell our tales, how we swam with whales
And then we went our merry way.

Stay tuned,

Aural expression of life and love to help you rise above

Music is an aural expression of life. From babies in the womb to the silver-haired citizens, music is an amazingly comforting language. I’ve shared a lot of information about the health benefits of music and sound. But it doesn’t benefit only the listener.

And I know this from a lifetime of aural expression.

Whatever musical gifts and talents I have are gifts from God. And I’ve been blessed to be able to share my own aural expressions (aka: songs) with hundreds of thousands of people over the years. And it occurred to me that a singer songwriter is a little bit like a heart surgeon.

Over fifty years ago, the Bee Gees sang, “How can you mend a broken heart?” And, ironically, they answered their own question with a song. I don’t know if they wrote that song after a personal breakup. But I’d say it’s pretty likely. Because that’s how some of the best music is created.

And just think about that for a second. Something you can’t even see or touch can “mend” hearts. And people of all ages experience heartbreak. It’s not just for teenage girls regardless of their ability to shed more tears than anyone else on the planet.

But back to what I mentioned earlier.

Aural expressions benefit more than listeners. Composers and songwriters experience amazing blessings during the process of creation.

I love this quote from the father of the symphony and string quartet, Josef Haydn:

“Never was I so devout as when I composed The Creation. I knelt down each day to pray to God to give me strength for my work. When I was working on The Creation I felt so impregnated with Divine certainty, that before sitting down to the piano, I would quietly and confidently pray to God to grant me the talent that was needed to praise Him worthily.”

I’m listening to some of Mr. Haydn’s music as I write this. But don’t click that link if you think classical music is boring. Because you might end up feeling too relaxed to come back and read the rest of what I’m going to say.

If music doesn’t prove to you there’s a God who loves you, then your future could be in dark jeopardy. And I hope I don’t have to clarify this for you. But I mean REAL music. Not that barely approximate rhyme, gibberish, attitude talk junk trying to pass itself off as a musical art form. Not that growl, grunt, and groan rock trying to pass itself off as a musical art form. And not that bump and grind, hyper-sexualized pop trash trying to pass itself off as a musical art form.

REAL music is written and performed by real musicians who understand and convey aural expressions on real instruments.

Rhapsodies and symphonies might not float your boat.

But it’s incredible what classical music can do for your brain. And your heart. So, don’t let your heart be hardened by the lies of this world. If you even begin to feel that happening, listen to Haydn, or Beethoven, or Bach. They all credited their Creator for the gift of music.

I do, too. And if you’ve ever listened to or bought any of my music, I’m truly grateful and honored. I hope it helped you understand why you’re here, or helped you mend a broken heart, or just relax. And I want you to know how much it helped my heart to write it for you.

Hypnopompic hallucinations inspire foggy revelations

Hypnopompic hallucinations. No, there are no drugs involved. You might have experienced them, even if you’ve never heard of ’em. Because they can occur in that transitional time between sleep and fully waking up. And they don’t have to include scenes of terror. After all, it’s not like everything in life mimics Stephen King books.

My hypnopompic hallucinations almost always involve music.

And I have a theory about that.

“Honey! Break out the popcorn and Pepsi! Tony’s got a theory!”

Radio waves are all around us. Twenty-four hours a day. Seven days a week. And they don’t stop just because it’s time for bed. So, I believe the human brain can detect, and possibly even recognize and remember, some of those waves. Especially the ones that contain words and music. Yeah. Songs.

Have you ever awaken with a song stuck in your head? It’s happened to me. Many times. Well, my theory is that your brain picks a song out of those radio waves while you sleep. Then, as you start to wake up, your brain holds on to the song. And since you’re still in that transitional time, somewhere between sleep and wakefulness, it doesn’t seem real.

And I guess scientists decided to call that hypnopompic hallucinations. What a bunch of hypnopompic aces.

OK, all seriousness aside.

As I woke up this morning, I had the transitional experience again. I shared a rhyme about this, a while back, and here’s what I said…

Somewhere Between A Dream And Awake

The sleep is still there in my brain
As I walk through the house in the dark.
Ideas drive my head, like a train,
Subatomic inside of a quark.

Crescendo, andante, surreal
In a beckoning, billowing dream,
Come thoughts both abrupt and genteel,
All painted with vanishing cream.

I know they are there just for me,
And I must have a mental keepsake
Of the life I see but don’t see
Somewhere between a dream and awake.

Small creatures with interesting features

OK, I know you’re shopping bags are at the ready. And you can’t wait for the stores to open. So, I won’t keep you long. You’ll have plenty of time to celebrate the birthdays of those small creatures.

Of course, you might be the oddball who doesn’t know which small creatures I mean.

I’ll give you some hints.

They were first introduced to the world back in the 1930’s. By a Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon and a Fellow of Pembroke College at Oxford. And, as a matter of fact, a book was published on September 21st, 1937, that provided the two small creatures you’re celebrating today.

(You ARE, aren’t you?)

Of course, the book is “The Hobbit.” And those small creatures are Frodo Baggins and Bilbo Baggins. And today is Hobbit Day. Hooray! Part of week of celebration called Tolkien Week.

Apparently Bilbo was born on this day in 2890 (1290 to you and me). And Frodo was born on this day in 2968 (1368 to you and me).

I guess the American Tolkien Society thought their birthdays were important enough to establish Hobbit Day back in 1978. And what I’ve been able to determine, it’s still an unofficial holiday. But I don’t imagine that’ll sway you from heading out to get your Hobbit Day shopping done as soon as possible.

Besides the Hobbit cake I’m sure you won’t forget the beer and wine. Or the pork pies. And mince pies. Naturally, you’ll be sure to include the honey cakes, scones, and coffee. Or else it wouldn’t be a true Hobbit Day party.

Tell your friends in the reading circle I said hello.

And be sure to let me know which book you read from or which movie you all enjoyed together.

Isn’t it nice that ol’ JRR took the time to write those amazing books? As you read them you might wonder how so much imagination and talent ended up in one brain. Or you might realize that Mr. Tolkien’s ability to turn a phrase came from the same source as all gifts and talents. Your Creator.

Tolkien realized it. And he acknowledged it often. On one occasion, he wrote an answer to the daughter of a friend of his. Because he discovered she wanted to know the purpose of life. And he explained that it’s “to increase, according to our capacity, our knowledge of God by all the means we have. And to be moved by it to praise and thanks.”

On that delightful note, let me just say,
I hope you have a happy Hobbit Day.

Old hymns are fine, but here's another line.

OK, I heard it again. And without mincing words (who does that anymore?) I gotta say I’m insulted. Because people keep saying they “miss the old hymns in church.” And they say things like, “Only the old hymns stay true to the Bible.” Or something like, “Music, in churches these days, is repetitious ME focused drivel. Modern songs just seem to leave out the Bible altogether.”

Well, I can’t say I disagree with most of that. But I DO take issue with one part.

Old hymns aren’t the only songs that are true to the Bible.

I know this for a fact. Because I’m a songwriter who’s keenly interested in rightly dividing the word of truth. And, for the most part, my “Christian music” is Biblically focused.

Here on TonyFunderburk.com, I talk, sing, and write about the things to help you understand why you’re here. And yes, my views are unapologetically Christian. But sometimes, in order to make sure there’s food on the Funderburk table, I sell stuff. Books. Music. T-shirts. And right now I’d like you to consider getting my Raise The Praise collection of praise and worship songs.

I wrote and produced them all. So, I take full responsibility for the content. But I believe you’ll discover music that’s anything but ME focused. I’ve shared a lot of the lyrics here on the website and with my email subscribers. And you’ll get the lyrics as part of the downloadable version. Raise The Praise is a collection 12 praise and worship songs on CD for $12 and the downloadable version for $7.97

And if you think I’ve lied about the messages, I’ll give you back your money.

But I believe the lyrics are rock solid. And they boldly stand up to the old hymns in solidarity. You decide for yourself, of course. So, just pick your favorite way to get songs and click or tap to get ’em.

Raise The Praise - A collection of entertaining praise and worship songs by Christian writer singer illustrator, Tony FunderburkClick this button to get the Raise The Praise download collection

As always…I’d love to hear your feedback. I hope they bless you as much as they did me as I wrote them. And I hope they encourage you to “Raise The Praise” to your living, loving Creator.

Six thousand years ago, give or take a year or so

OK, stop me if you’ve heard this story (yeah, as if you could stop me). This story took place six thousand years ago. In a place very, very close to where you are right now. In fact, it took place exactly where you are right now. And it’s about the beginning of our little, blue planet. But before the story begins, let’s get an answer to a very important question. And the question is:

Why do Christians say the world began six thousand years ago?

Well, here’s a quote of an answer many (if not most) Christians give for that question.

“The reason that some Christians claim that the earth is only a bit more than 6000 years is that they take certain verses in the Book of Genesis literally. In the creation account in Genesis 1, the creation of the earth is described as occurring in six “days.” Most believers assume that these days are not literal 24-hour days.  They believe that these “days” are periods of undefined length.  The days are poetic descriptions of the stages over which God created the earth and the different life forms on the earth.  Genesis 1 is a metaphorical description of the process by which God created the heavens and the earth.”

Sometimes you can find an answer like this:

“A minority of Christian believers take the ‘days’ literally.  Fundamentalist Christians are unanimous about this belief. They are sometimes known of as “young earth creationists.” This explains the young earth, but it does not explain the 6000+ years. Genesis then gives genealogies which, if taken to have no gaps and fully literally, can be used to calculate an age of the earth to be between six and seven thousand years. Bishop Ussher, of Ireland, famously calculated that the universe was created in 4004 BC. Again, few Christians take these genealogies to be able to produce a precise age of the earth, but some do.”

OK, the people who say the days of creation were not “literal 24-hour days” are wrong. Let’s just get that out there straightaway. Because the creation account in Genesis is crystal clear that they’re days just like the days we experience now. Here’s a synapsis of that crystal clarity:

  • Genesis 1:5 NKJV
God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
  • Genesis 1:8 NKJV
And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.
  • Genesis 1:13 NKJV
So the evening and the morning were the third day.
  • Genesis 1:19 NKJV
So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
  • Genesis 1:23 NKJV
So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
  • Genesis 1:31 NKJV
Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

And don’t say, “Wait a minute. Those days could certainly be “poetic descriptions of the stages” of time God took to create.” Because, as always, the Bible clearly clarifies itself to anyone who’s willing to dive in a little deeper when necessary.

As for me, I believe the Bible actually says what it means. Sure there are metaphors sometimes. And allegories. And similes. But generally speaking, you can trust something like a reference to a day to mean a day like you experienced yesterday.

Not convinced?

That’s OK. Because I believe the conflict arises from a focus on the word, “day.” And I’ve read articles that expound on the Hebrew translation for “day,” which is yom. And most of those articles try to explain how yom, used with a number, is almost always associated with a literal day. Et cetera, et cetera, etc.

But let’s take the focus off the word, day. And put the focus on the evening and morning part. Notice it’s one evening. And one morning. Not plural evenings and mornings. What purpose would it serve God to confuse us and make us wonder (and debate about) what He meant by an evening and a morning being the first day? And second day. And so on.

Short answer is, it would serve NO purpose.

Still not convinced?

After the people of Israel had escaped Egypt, crazy as it might sound, they complained about their circumstances. And Moses told them, “At evening you shall know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt. And in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord…”

There’s that evening and morning thing again.

Then Moses told them, “This shall be seen when the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to the full…”

Hmm…doesn’t seem like those could be “ages.”

Can you imagine eating that meat in one age and then waiting who knows how long before breakfast in another age? Yeah, no. That’s not how it went.

And that’s also not how it went when God created the heavens, the earth, and all the universe. He didn’t create all that just to have something to do. I believe He created all that (and all of us) because He’s relational, good, and loving. And He wanted and loved us even more than you and I want and love pets.

Of course, He could have created some slime and wait to see if and when it would evolve into something marvelous. But why would He want to wait to have more relationships? After all He’s God. He can create instantaneously. That’s how He created this world six thousand years ago. Or seven. Or just a few more.

And that’s infinitely FAR more amazing than creating a primordial soup and letting it stew for millions of years.

No. I love the God who’s incomprehensibly awesome and yet considers me to be his friend. And just in case you think this is just a religious thang, the point is, it matters to YOU regardless of your belief. Because if I’m right about who the one, true, living, loving Creator of all life is, then there are definite and permanent consequences for your choice.

God? Or no God?

Eternal life in Heaven? Or eternal anguish and torment in hell?

Door number one leads to is a bottomless well of Living Water to nourish your creativity and imagination forever. Door number two leads to a bottomless pit of fiery torment where your anger and resentment will never be quenched.

If you haven’t already, pick Door Number One.

I got kinetic love. I got potential love.
And there’s a kingdom come waiting down the line.
I got a lavish love. And I got a simple love.
And I gotta share this love ‘cause it ain’t just mine.
(from my song, Kinetic Love)

Wet or dry, these beds don't lie.

Would you believe, in all my criss-cross traveling days as a professional musician, I never visited the Grand Canyon. Nope. I still haven’t seen it up close and personal. And I just read an article, and watched some videos, that piqued my interest to go see that big hole in the ground. Because of the fascinating information about cross-beds. That’s why I titled this post “wet or dry, these beds don’t lie.” It’ll make more sense shortly.

Wet or dry refers to the methodology in the videos.

And before I go any further, let me say, I gotta get a cool Brunton geology compass. Dr. John Whitmore, the guy in the video I’ll share with you, is the senior geology professor at Cedarville University. And he shows how he uses the Brunton compass to measure slope in the Coconino Sandstone cross-beds.

I love science when it’s actual science and not an anti God religion of blind faith. So, I enjoy information where actual scientists show actual rock formations and what’s actually going on. Or I should say what actually went on, back in the past.

Anyway…

Dr. Whitmore takes future and wannabe creation scientists on field trips down the Colorado River into the Grand Canyon. And he’s become a hands-on expert when it comes to the Coconino Sandstone cross-beds. I love how the article I read called out “conventional scientists,” and then said, they “have long considered this sandstone layer to be an example of an ancient desert filled with sand dunes. The technical term is eolian, or wind-blown, sandstone.”

But Dr. Whitmore believes something else explains the cross-beds.

And he shares a lot of evidence for the Coconino to be “a massive underwater sand deposit, or marine sandstone.” And that evidence points to something that makes total sense. Something I’ve talked about many times here on my website and in person with people who care to talk about it.

A global flood.

Before I read the article or watch a video, I had never heard of the Coconino sandstone. And apparently it’s a famous beige-colored formation. But they have dark, diagonal lines through them. Those are the cross-beds, and they happen when wind or water currents move sand into angles.

Dr. Whitmore measures those angles.

Sounds fun. Right? But who cares about the angles of sand through layers of rock in the Grand Canyon?

Well, you should care. I sure do. Because desert sand dunes and underwater sand dunes have different angles. And that difference gives interested eyes a whole new angle for looking at creation vs evolution.

So, that’s why Dr. Whitmore has carefully measured those angles with his cool Brunton compass. Because he needs to measure the angles of the beds AND the direction those beds dip. He can measure them wet or dry. But he shows a way to use water to find out where to measure.

Watch a video of the good Doc at work, below. And it reminds me of some lyrics I shared about heading down the Colorado River…

Down The River

Down the river there’s a ripple and a wake
That doesn’t seem to end like it does in a lake.
It doesn’t need a storm or a deep earthquake
To shimmer and shudder and shiver and shake.

Down the river there’s a mile-high sky
That changes real fast as the rocks roll by.
It doesn’t share a smile or a mournful sigh.
It darkens and lightens and closes one eye.

Down the river there’s a story to tell
That a few old-timers and their dogs know well.
A tale of woe when the river did swell…
And sent all the rafters to Heaven or Hell.

Down the river, where the rapids break free,
Is a place you’ll be glad that you got to see.
It’s where you’ll decide if you ever will be
Back down the river to the landing tree.

Liberal ideology sounds good on the M and the V

I am NOT a liberal. Although I AM liberal. And that might seem confusing at first glance. But it makes total sense AND it’s the sensible way to be. But only when you understand the difference between the word, liberal, and what passes for liberal ideology. And, in that case, Inigo Montoya said it best, “You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.”

Liberal ideology flows from people whose brains spilled out.

Most people who fancy themselves to be “liberals” do so because they like the more current dictionary definitions. Like this: “(in a political context) favoring policies that are socially progressive and promote social welfare.”

After all, what kind of clear-thinking individual would oppose progress? And who, but a hater, would  be against promoting social welfare?

Well, me.

“What?! You oppose progress and the welfare of others, Tony?!”

Yes. And I still use the adjective, liberal, to describe myself. But notice. I said “adjective.” Not noun. Because I vehemently oppose just about everything contained in liberal ideology. So, I absolutely can’t be called “a liberal.” Because it’s overflowing with hypocrisy.

But you know what?

For decades I’ve enjoyed what those pesky liberals can design. And what they bake and brew and build. Because so many “cool” sections of towns are controlled by liberals. And so many coffee shops are owned and managed by liberals. (Note: this excludes horribly decaying liberal cities)

For example, a while back, before iTunes became Apple Music, they offered access to a ton of internet radio stations. Free. With just a click you could listen to talk stations, cool and nouveau and smooth Jazz stations, and even Americana stations.

One, in particular, that I enjoyed often, was Martha’s Vineyard Radio. Or MVYRadio for short. Because they play an eclectic blend of songs from my past, old standards, and new stuff I’ve never heard but tend to appreciate.

Of course, they play some awful stuff, too. Songs that should never have made it to the airwaves. Pretty much every station does that. But, for the most part, I enjoy MVY Radio.

Hmm…Martha’s Vineyard. Not sure why I thought of them, today. Probably just because it’s a nice, clear day outside. And I heard an MVY Radio DJ say it was nice up there on Martha’s Vineyard Island, too. Plus they mentioned some of the wonderful Saturday morning activities going on today. People fishing. Farmer’s market. Live music in the park.

You know, good ol’ red, white, and blue Americana.

It’s the kind of stuff that inspires
My ebullient, liberal desires
To share with all people the reason why we exist.
From the moment I was conceived,
Everything that I ever received
Was liberally enriched by the one Biologist.

Outer limits imagination ignores actual creation

“There is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to, The Outer Limits.” That was part of the opening to the old TV show from back in the 60’s.

Boomers remember The Outer Limits.

Everybody else probably feels like they live in the outer limits now. Because the rest of that opening was all about control. Here’s the complete opening the invisible narrator said before each episode…

Opening words to the outer limits TV show

Most episodes were focused on science fiction. And they sort of resembled Japanese science fiction movies like Godzilla. Goofy looking creatures and such. But to young, impressionable minds of mush, they could be spookily entertaining.

Kinda like watching C-span these days.

But let’s not go there right now. Yeesh.

According to some information I’ve read, The Outer Limits had some influence on a subsequent TV show. A little, obscure production called Star Trek.

I’m a fan of those kinds of shows. I think I’m an even bigger fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Because it uses science fiction to parody and poke fun of science fiction shows. But all those shows “innocently” did something I think maybe they were intended to do.

Distract viewers from Truth.

If you enjoyed them, I’m not trying to ruin them for you. But I think it’s important to illustrate how they focused on human imagination and human creation. And right now, I want you to sit quietly while I control all that you see and read. There’s nothing wrong with your device. You’re about to participate in a great adventure. You’re going to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the written Word to Life Without Limits.

I’m gonna leave my cares and troubles far behind
I’m gonna live this brand new life that I’ve designed?
And I’m gonna love discovering which way to go.
I’m gonna laugh and then say yes instead of no.
(from my song, I’m Gonna)

Archangel unaware reveals you actually care

Don’t do good deeds just because you might help an archangel unaware. Or any other kind of angel for that matter.

In fact, don’t do good deeds, or good works, or just plain good stuff for any self-serving reason. And that might be more difficult than you think.

The archangel unaware part is something I made up.

But it’s based, at least a little, on a verse in Hebrews that says, “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.” Don’t misunderstand me. Because I certainly don’t recommend blindly entertaining strangers. Especially these days. Be sure you know who’s in your house.

This is all rambling just a bit. And I might have to blame it on a shortage of sleep. So, I’ll just leave you with these alliterative words to ponder. Just in case you wonder. And just in case you wanna entertain some angels. Read ’em this…

Tinkling trinkets twinkled through the tiny town.
Lots of lemon drops were lofted by a clown.
And the muffins made with mandarin were sweet…
As the fireworks and fireflies lit up the street.

With one glance a glad glissando glided by…
And a perfect pizzicato pierced the sky…
You might ask where was this wonderment beheld…
I won’t tell you, and I cannot be compelled.

‘Less, of course, you’d share the shelter of your shade
With the people passing by in the parade.
Then I’d treat you to the treasures tendered there
As you aided an archangel unaware.
