90 years ago today he started on his way

It all started 90 years ago, today. On April 19, 1934. Before I say more about that, let me say this.

Every human being past, present, or future will experience these same three things: Life Love Loss.

Obviously if you were born and you’re reading this now, you’ve experienced life. And you’ve also experienced love, at least in some way, at least once in your life. And, since the birth to death ratio is still 1:1, and not likely to change for the foreseeable future, you WILL experience loss. If not now, soon. But the life, love, and loss you experience here in this space/time continuum isn’t the final word on your existence.

OK. Now. Back to what happened 90 years ago, today.

A little boy was born to Guy and Verna Funderburk. They named him Dwight Lee. And he was the third of their three sons. And just in case you haven’t skipped ahead of me, he also was the one who became my Dad.

Dad, by his own account, started out as sort of a sickly guy. He went through a bout of rheumatic fever. And then he dealt with polio which affected his left arm, which was particularly challenging because he was born left-handed. So, as a result, he had to learn to use his right hand for everything.

If you’d ever met Dad, you wouldn’t have guessed any of that happened. Because he seemed as naturally right-handed as any right-hander. And his left arm and hand looked and functioned perfectly normal.

Unfortunately, he wouldn’t find out until he was around 42 that the rheumatic fever had done more to him than anyone knew about. Turns out, that disease stunted the growth of his kidneys. Here’s more of his story, that I shared a few years ago.

Way back in 1986 my Dad died after battling with kidney failure for nine years. After suffering some unexplained illnesses for multiple weekends in a row, he finally decided to see a doctor. The doctor and hospital ran tests and discovered that his kidneys had failed. And they told him he would probably only live 2 to 4 years more. But he worked hard to remove fluids from his body, in addition to dialysis, and proved them wrong by living 9 more years. However, at the age of only 51 he finally lost the battle with that “terminal” condition and slipped away into the presence of the living, loving, Creator.

To say I loved and admired my Dad would be an understatement.

In fact, I quote him to this day. He was far from perfect (sort of like the rest of us). But he was MY Dad. And that made him the most important man in the world. Being a young man myself (I was 31 when he died) I felt the need to grieve the loss internally. Because big boys don’t cry. And six years after he died I wrote a musical tribute to him.

Here are the lyrics for the guy born 90 years ago, today. Happy Birthday Dad…

Fandango Street

Dwight was a boy anybody would employ
‘Cause he worked his fingers to the bone.
But he said he had to fly, get a piece of the sky.
So he took off for the great unknown.
Everybody said no, no, no. But he still had to go
To make his whole life complete
And look for Fandango Street.

He took himself a wife, as he made the change of life,
And the boy became a regular man.
They had a couple kids just like everybody did.
But it really wasn’t in the plan.
And his spirit said no, no, no.
That’s not the way you should go.
Should be pointing your feet on up to Fandango Street.

Oh, but somewhere the world took over

And left him thirsting for more.
Where was the milk and the honey
He had dreamed of all those years before?

He was moving right along feeling permanently strong
Thinking all he had to do was behave.
But a terminal disease slowly drove him to his knees,
And it took him to an early grave.
And his family said no, no, no.
But he still had to go
To make the journey complete and look for Fandango Street.

And to this day I say no, no, no.
But I know he had to go.
To make the journey complete and look for Fandango Street.
I hear him tapping his feet up on Fandango Street.
And so his life is complete, he dance on Fandango Street!

Where do you stand? With the guy in the band?

Where do you stand when it comes to living your best life? For me, it’s an easy answer. Because I made a choice, when I was 13, that converted my life into a series of perfect days, weeks, months, and years. That’s how it is when you become a (shh, I’ll have to whisper this next word) Christian.

Hey, you can make fun of me for choosing to be a Christian, if that’s your thang. But don’t knock the mistake-free life until you’ve at least tried it. Because most people in the world love us Christians. And I certainly can’t complain about the fringe benefits either. Like health, wealth, and tons of influence in the global arena.

It’s been awesome.

Don’t listen to anyone who’d dare tell you they knew me when. Especially if they tell you I haven’t always enjoyed a mistake-free life. Because they’re just envious. And it ain’t pretty. Poor souls. Hope they learn.

Anyway…

Where do you stand with your life choices?

I hope you’re at least considering living your best life now. Because I’m sure you’re the kind of person who deserves it. Am I right? So, don’t put it off. Get started today. So, you can experience the 24/7 joy-filled life where crime and sin are just words less enlightened people use.

OK, before I get past the point of no return, of course I just shared a satirical view of my life as a Christian. And it probably comes as no surprise that my life hasn’t been mistake-free and totally joy-filled.

Nope. As a matter of fact, in my many years as a professional musician I didn’t always lead the righteous life. I never did drugs, not even marijuana. And I’m grateful to God for that. But I did things I shouldn’t have done. Yep, I was THAT musician who made bad decisions.

Fortunately for me, I had chosen Jesus as my savior when I was young. Because He never let go of me even when I was stupid. And thankfully that’s true to this day.

Yeah, a choice to put your faith in Jesus doesn’t immediately transform you into a sinless, perfect person. Sorry to say, but it’s true, sometimes things get more difficult. And here’s another shocker. Sometimes even the ones who love Jesus…sin. Of course, by “sometimes” I mean a lot of times.

Humans are so broken and selfish. So much so many don’t even realize how broken and selfish they are. That’s where being a Christian helps. At least we have a guidebook and a standard we can depend on.

And we have HOPE.

I can’t even imagine how difficult this world is for people who don’t have the hope of eternal life. So…

Where do you walk stand sit?
There’s a righteous way to see it.
It can save your soul and free it.
Where do you walk stand sit?

You can be like a tree.
Rivers of water flowing free,
Nurturing fruit for all to see.
You can be like a tree.

Just know that it’s your choice.
You can choose life and rejoice,
Or a place you’ll have no voice.
Just know that it’s your choice.

Professional musician times before these reasons and rhymes

For a long time I sang for my supper. And breakfast, lunch, and snacks. And I sang for my monthly bills, my gasoline consumption, and even my cool clothes. When you can pay your way as a musician, do you know what they call you? Yeah, somebody who should get a real job. Wait a second! That’s not right. They call you a professional musician. Or professional entertainer. Or something like that.

For 25 years I played just about every kind of venue a professional musician could play. And I’d take all the paid bookings I could fit into my calendar. Sometimes the feast would include 7 nights a week and additional day gigs on the weekend. And sometimes the famine would be a weak weekender.

But I got to live the life of a professional musician.

And I didn’t have to compete with free.

But once every Tammy, Jane, and Mary had a computer with the power to rip music off discs and send it all around the globe for free, the professional musician days were changed forever.

At first I despised what had become of the world of music. And, on certain levels, I still do. But then, technology began to offer ways for singer/songwriters to keep more of their intellectual property. Of course, it’s a pipe dream to think anyone can hold on to all of their intellectual property any more. But when you can at least offer it up in ways that aren’t so easy to rip and steal, you gotta try.

So, in the past few years I started offering my music collections in physical books. I haven’t been actively trying to sell downloads and certainly not discs for a while. And if you’re one of those people who’ve supported my efforts by buying my books, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. And I want you to know YOU are the kind of person who I want to keep on producing music for.

As my circumstances permit, I hope to have more stuff you haven’t heard before. In the meantime, you’ll find my physical music offers in links below. And here’s my ode to the…

Invisible Song Machines

The times will come in everyone’s life
When changes have to occur.
The reasons could be obvious, or
They might even be a blur.
One of those times is happening now.
It’s somewhere behind the scenes…
Where the melodies quickly become
Invisible song machines.
Value is lost down deep in a world
Increasingly wanting “free.”
So, I’m moving my music around
To places listeners can see.
Places where I think they’ll connect
With those who connect with me.
If you believe I’ve got it all wrong
Then certainly, by all means,
Continue to get your free songs from
Invisible song machines.

Incense and peppermints and things that make me wince

Whoa! The strawberry alarm clock just went off. And it’s a good thing, too. Because now the song “Incense and Peppermints” is wafting through the air. Psychedelic, man. We gotta get outta this place. If it’s the last thing we ever do. Hey, I just inserted the words “ignorance and selfishness” in the song. And I gotta say, I don’t hate it.

I’m glad I don’t hate it. Because I’d much rather talk about peace, love, and joy.

So, enjoy some incense and peppermints while I elucidate, illustrate, and annotate.

First, here’s the positive part of the news. God’s love is greater than all the hatred of the world. His love overcomes and endures forever. His love made a way for you to live forever, too. Now that’s awesome news!

Second, unfortunately the world is so full of hatred that most people could’t care less about God’s love.

From abortion to euthanasia to outright unbridled murder, there’s a bloodlust in this world that is unsustainable. Thankfully, God’s love will eventually put that to an end.

But, let’s say you don’t believe in God. And since you don’t believe in Him you certainly don’t trust Him. In that case, you’ve got some research to do. Because there’s an almost infinite amount of evidence that He’s real. And there’s a ton of evidence that He’s willing to love even YOU.

For example, you have your own will.

So, God didn’t make you one of His robots who can do nothing except His bidding. This is an important point for you to understand. Because it means you get to choose whether or not you want to live with God forever. And that’s why I said you’ve got some research to do. By the way, I recommend you don’t put that research off too long. It’s a limited time offer, so to speak.

He loves you and wants to show you eternal paradise. But He won’t force you there if you don’t want to go. And in spite of what some people might tell you, your fate wasn’t sealed before you were born.

I encourage you to at least consider the options I talk about. And I’ve talked about those options, in one way or another, thousands of times. And that’s just here on the website. I’ve talked about ’em way more times out there in the real world.

So get yourself some incense and peppermints and relax.

But then, choose life before the dark and dreary hatred of the world chews you up and spits you into hell.

Yes, Give me words…give me courage…
Give me time and a powerful voice.
And when many still may hate me,
Give me Your love and I’ll always rejoice.

(lyrics from my song: Give Me The Whole Jesus)

Incontinence choice in a very loud voice

Let’s ask the judges for a definition before we proceed. “1: lack of voluntary control over urination or defecation, AND 2: lack of self-restraint” OK. There you have it. The very definition of why there’s an incontinence choice problem right here in the once greatest nation on the planet.

Yes, I said incontinence choice.

Even though the first definition of the word incontinence mentioned it’s a lack of voluntary control. Because the emotional incontinence of modern society is out of control. But certainly not involuntarily. “Clean up on Main Street, Stat!”

Have you seen how many “adults” rant like little spoiled brats in public places? And the rants aren’t limited to certain income brackets, ethnicities, culture differences, or basically any other demographic. It seems just about anybody can make that incontinence choice at the drop of a feather.

And it sounds silly to even talk about it. Because it should be fictional. But if you’ve ever read the Bible, and I mean really read it, none of this should surprise you. After all, Paul mentions how people will be incontinent in the last days. In fact, he talks about a lot of bad traits we’ll see during those perilous times.

So, obviously you and I are still living in the “Bible Days.” And I know you’ve witnessed more than one person who fits one or more of these descriptions:

  • lovers of their own selves
  • covetous
  • boasters
  • proud
  • blasphemers
  • disobedient to parents
  • unthankful
  • unholy
  • without natural affection
  • truce breakers
  • false accusers
  • incontinent
  • fierce
  • despisers of those that are good
  • traitors
  • heady
  • high-minded
  • lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God

During my time as a praise and worship music minister, in a church in Colorado, I wrote songs based on some of the pastor’s messages. And one of those messages was about how people say they’d like to go back and visit places during the Bible days. The pastor thought that was kinda humorous because…

These Are The Bible Days

I’m no prophet, but God can work through me.
Willing servants are all He wants to see.
We can learn from the past, the apostles,
and all of their ways,
But we live in the here and now, and these….are the Bible days.

Lord, our small hearts are full of love from You.
Help us know what You’d rather have us do.
Help the sheep hear Your call in this world that’s so full of strays.
As it was when Your Son arose; still these…are the Bible days.

When darkness falls…These are the Bible days.
Temptation calls…These are the Bible days.
When right is wrong…These are the Bible days.
The weak get strong…These are the Bible days.
Till every mountain sways, till every debtor pays,
Till every helpless, hopeless, sinner prays…
These…are the Bible days.

There’s no difference when going first to last.
Lord we need you like generations passed.
Give us strength for this life and help us always focus our gaze
With our eyes on the Prize because these”
are the Bible days.

Chorus
These…are the Bible days.
These…are the Bible days.

Envy people who have a lot less than you?

Do you envy people when it seems like they have a lot more than you? Well, guess what? No, I won’t make you guess.

Actually, they might not have more than you.

In fact, they might have much less, and they might never have as much as you. Looks can be deceiving. And what you see in this world doesn’t last forever.

So, don’t envy people for their “stuff.”

I know you know this. But there sure seems to be a lot of envy running around out there. And it’s such an exercise in futility. Because the “cools stuff” other people have will turn into junk. Every. Bit. Of. It.

But you know what will never turn to junk? Grace. Yep, grace lasts forever. And God freely gives grace to the humble.

Sure, grace might not show on the outside. So, you won’t look as “cool” arriving at a party dressed in grace as you would showing up in a high-dollar suit. But those threads are gonna be moth food one day. Grace goes on FORever.

And there’s another reason you should envy people and their “cool stuff” in this world. From God’s perspective, most of that stuff is the opposite of cool. Here are some key things to remember about His perspective. He…

  • says the “perverse person is an abomination”
  • keeps a secret counsel with upright people
  • curses the houses of the wicked
  • blesses the homes of the just
  • scorns the scornful

Knowing all that, it would be a wise choice to choose to love God and His ways.

It would be a wise choice to humble yourself because, like I mentioned before, God gives grace to the humble. And it’s always a wise choice to realize you’re not God And that you need a savior.

So be wise when it comes to your eternal fate. When you are, you’ll inherit glory. When you aren’t, you can only leave behind a legacy of shame. And never envy people who don’t realize any of this truth.

Grace to the humble.
Grace to the wise.
Grace to the ones who
Choose truth over lies.

Use this link, and share it with everybody you know, to jump on the The TRUTH and get my really refreshing rhymes and reasons delivered to you for zippo moolah. Some other complimentary stuff, too.

Safe to tell about that living hell

I just saw an article snippet and a short video about something that hit close to home for me. And the saddest part is how people only recently felt it was safe to tell someone about what they knew.

Here’s the news snippet: “A cold case is solved nearly 60 years later. The death of milkman Hiram Grayam, a Purple Heart recipient, haunted his children for decades. All these years later, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office says their prime suspect, Thomas Williams, died in 2016. People who knew him finally felt safe to come forward.”

Wow! It took 60 years for them to feel it was safe to tell someone what they knew.

The video I watched included the murdered milkman’s son. And the cut the media used was of him saying, “If you were 16 years old and they told you they found your dad’s body, in the woods, shot to death, how would anybody feel?” Yeah, it must’ve been a relief AND a shock to know people knew what happened but didn’t say anything for decades.

As I mentioned, that story hit mighty close to home for me. Because 60 years ago my Dad was a milkman. And I can’t imagine having to be told something like that about him.

Back then, I’d go to work with my Dad on Saturdays. He was a milkman for a long time. And that was at a time when milkmen would have to get up at 3 in the morning to be sure to have the milk delivered before breakfast for most of their customers. So, there was a lot of work in the wee hours before dawn.

And I remember carrying milk, eggs, cheese, etc. to the back of some fairly spooky-looking houses. Fortunately there weren’t many of those. Because most of Dad’s routes were in the neighborhoods where the original “right stuff” astronauts lived. But he did deliver to some customers who, let’s say, weren’t quite as well off as the space guys.

(Side note: I shared the story of the connection I made with ice cream and Neil Armstrong HERE)

I’m thankful my memories of Dad, the milkman, are nostalgic.

And I’m glad it’s always been safe to tell his story. Because that’s how life in a “free” country should be. Sadly, there are SO many people out there who don’t know what happened to their loved ones. And many, if not most, of them might never know this side of Heaven.

That’s why it’s more important than ever to watch out for yourself and your loved ones. Arm yourself, if you haven’t already. Be prepared to escalate fierceness if and when needed as others and/or circumstances won’t let you live peaceably among men.

Here’s the way I explained it to kids several years ago. Thankfully it’s still safe to tell them this:

When you wear the full armor of God,
You’ll be ready when the enemies attack.
You can’t see ’em, but beware, they are out there everywhere.
But with God’s help you can always fight them back.

All the shining stars outshine your avatars

Imagine that you could speak words and a planet would appear. Then you speak more words and the sun and moon pop in. Then, a few more words and all the birds, dinosaurs, fishes, horses, dogs, lions, and every other creature appear. Now, imagine you could stretch out your hands and create all the shining stars in the universe.

Yes, I said all the shining stars in the universe. Not dark ones.

It’s hard to even imagine. But God can do it. In fact, He DID do it. After all nothing, good, is impossible for God.

Yeah, God took dirt from the earth and breathed life into it and created a man. And He took a rib from the man and created a woman. You and I couldn’t do that in millions or billions of years. And neither could nothing.

Because you can’t get something from nothing. And here’s a real kick in your head.

Even though nothing good is impossible for God, even He didn’t get something from nothing. And, if you’re a Christian like me, you’ve probably said, at some time or another, “only God can create something out of nothing.”

On the surface that’s true. God didn’t need “raw materials” to pre-exist in order for Him to create Heaven and Earth and all the living plants and animals. But He definitely needing something to exist. And, in this case, I don’t like to use the word “something.” But for the sake of illustration it makes sense. That something He needed was His mind. His innate creativity. And He spent who knows how many eons thinking about what He’d create.

So, when He determined it was time to create the heavens and the earth, there’s no doubt He was prepared. And from the smallest fish at the bottom of the sea to all the shining stars in the heavens, His new creation was very good.

You and I get to live a world custom made for us.

And I get a lot of comfort and hope from knowing that. So many people, most in fact, want nothing to do with comfort and hope. They prefer to work out their own existence. Sadly, they fail (or refuse) to understand the potential eternal futility in that preference.

All the shining stars in the heavens will some day become nothing more than memories. And so will anyone who chooses to BE a god instead of choosing to love THE God who made them.

I’m thankful that’s not YOU. Right?

You might win a few things in this life,
And you might even win a whole lot.
But you’ll lose everything if you don’t trust the King
Who has given you all that He’s got.

Know that nothing is too hard for God.
He can help you through all of your fears.
If your gold turns to rust, or your diamonds to dust,
Only God can dry all of your tears.

Make the most of the moments you have.
They fly by in the blink of an eye.
Don’t waste time in the dark, jump inside of the ark
Of God’s love. Kiss the old life goodbye.

Keep believing truth and not some polling booth

“Survey says?!” Remember that question on Family Feud? Apparently that show is still on TV. But I haven’t watched it in decades, so I can’t say. But the reason I bring it up is because of the whole “survey says” thing. And that’s because I want to recommend you keep believing the Truth regardless of what any survey says.

Keep believing the Truth because it shall make you free.

Yeah, many (if not most) people misquote that verse in the Bible. They say “the truth will set you free.” But your Creator said it “shall make you free.”

It’s those kinds of nuances and phrase twists that bounce around my brain when I write songs. Sometimes even I don’t notice how much influence a Bible verse had on something I wrote, until after I finish it and read it all together. I think that’s cool. Because I love how God can work on me through my own writing. And there’s no doubt I need His work on me and in me.

One example of subtle nuances is my song, from 1986, called “Hold On.”

It’s one of those songs that makes a very nice lullaby for a parent to sing to a child. But it can also be a love song between adults. And it also contains lines that follow God’s own messages to us. I’ll share it with you. And maybe you’ll see what I mean.

Here are the lyrics. And you can hear the whole song in episode 625 of the The Power of God’s Love Podcast

Hold On

I would love to take you in my arms
And capture all your dreams that get away
And put them in your heart where they belong
And fill it full of love so they can stay.

But I wonder if there’s magic in my hands.
And I don’t know for sure what I should do
To make your monsters fade and disappear.
So I can only sing these words to you.

Hold on; you know you gotta hold real tight.
Gotta keep your dreams where they’re easiest to see.
Hold on; I know you gotta hold real tight.
If you look behind the Love, that’s where they’ll be.

I would love to see your smiling face
And know that at least in some small way I was there,
When you needed someone to help you through your darkness,
And help you get your wings back in the air.

Chorus

You got to keep believing in your choices.
No one but you can really clear the air.
And if you find you’re hearing different voices,
Then it isn’t just a passing love affair

Repeat 1st verse and choruses to end

My brother and I had a two-week booking in Erie, Pennsylvania. And we had just arrived. We unloaded our music gear and clothes and took them into the hotel. But I left a few boxes and assorted items in the back of my pickup. Because it was our first night in town. And we were tired from a long drive. Plus, the truck was parked inside the hotel’s “secure” lot for guests. So, no problem, right?

Yeah, no problem for a certain scumbag.

The next morning I went down to my pickup to go somewhere for lunch. And, as I approached the pickup, I noticed the hatch lift to my topper was open. Not a good sign. When I went around to look, I found papers and all sorts of things torn and tossed all around. Some of my personal property, including a can with a substantial amount of coins, was gone. As you might guess, I was livid.

Side note: synonyms for livid (and they all apply): furious, angry, infuriated, irate, fuming, raging, seething, incensed, enraged, angered, beside oneself, wrathful, ireful, maddened, cross, annoyed, irritated, exasperated, indignant; informal mad, boiling, wild, seeing red, hot under the collar, up in arms, foaming at the mouth, on the warpath, steamed up

If you’ve never felt violated like that, consider yourself fortunate. When someone crosses the line of your property, even if it’s in the back of your car or pickup, that’s already a violation. But when they steal what you’ve worked hard for, that’s an exponential increase to the violation.

And, in my case, it was even worse than that.

Because, of course, nothing was ever recovered. And my insurance wouldn’t cover it because they said I hadn’t properly protected my property. So, property lost. Lividity vented. And lesson learned.

But one of the reasons I brought this up is because of how many Americans don’t seem to even feel the slightest bit violated by criminals crossing our property lines. And so many Americans aren’t livid about how much of our money is stolen, by our own government, to give to those criminals. It’s demented, despicable, and devoid of intelligence.

Trillions of dollars in debt. And yet, somehow, politicians find a way to take YOUR money and give it to criminals. Yes, criminals. Every single person who crosses property lines (aka: the border) without going through the gate, is a criminal.

I don’t care if it’s a family of four who want “a better life.” And I don’t care if it’s a guy who “just wants to get a better job so he can take care of his family.” When you enter someone’s property without an invitation, you ARE a criminal!

But no problem. Right? Or, should I say, “no problemo?”  It’s just people moving from one place to another. Hey, I’ve done that a lot of times. And each one of those times was to set up something better.

So, what makes me think I can move around to different parts of the world and others can’t? Nothing. I never said that. But the difference is, I didn’t cross somebody’s property lines illegally. And I didn’t steal money from other people in order to make my move.

Yes, I’m better off than a lot of people in the world.

Because I was born into a country where I was at least free enough to pursue my dreams and goals. But even if I wanted to go live somewhere else in the world, I’d be sure to follow their rules for entry and citizenship. As long as they didn’t violate basic human rights to life and liberty, no problem.

So, there you have it. From feeling violated in Erie, Pennsylvania to an eerie violation of our national sovereignty. Do I know how to rant or what?!

Speaking of ranting. Here are the lyrics to a song I wrote after the incident in Erie.

Never Neverland

Sometimes this world brings my bad side out.
I get so mad I could scream!
I wonder why can’t we all be friends.
Live and let live and share the dream.
So much depending on tomorrow.
Heaven only knows where tomorrow goes.
Why must we beg and steal and borrow?
A temporary fix; an empty bag of tricks.

And it’s just like the drifting of the sand,
Living in Never Neverland.
Where the mind is always quicker than the hand,
Living in Never Neverland.

Sometimes I need just to air things out.
Let the sun shine on my face.
Then maybe I’ll keep emotions in check.
And I’ll still trust the human race.
So much at stake; so much to lose now.
Can’t we understand and open up our hands?
There’s so much more we could be doing,
If we would only do what we’re intended to.

Repeat chorus…inst…ad lib chorus to end

Play outside and turn the tide

It didn’t just start this year. Or anytime during the “pandemic.” In fact, Elgielene and I have noticed this, for a long time, during our walks through scores of neighborhoods across the country. Generally speaking, kids don’t play outside now.

Sure, SOME kids still play outside.

But we go for long walks through all kinds of neighborhoods. And we comment on how peaceful it is. And where we live now, in the heart of America, we don’t even see many adults outside. Even in the best spring weather we see right now. You might conclude people just don’t like the most affordable Vitamin D there is.

Well, YOU might not conclude that. But I would.

Anyway…

I just read some snippets of info based on research titled, “Decline in Independent Activity as a Cause of Decline in Children’s Mental Well-Being: Summary of the Evidence.” Wow. That’s a mouthful. But the study boiled it down to a decline in adolescent mental health due to “the decline in unstructured, unmanaged, and unsupervised play.”

And that study added that the number of “children playing outside has plummeted.” But it also said, “This is not because of the ‘laziness’ of video-gaming kids but because of parents’ fears of crime or traffic.”

And, get this, parents don’t wanna be seen as bad parents for allowing kids to play outside in that kind of world.

Again, wow!

I thank God I was fortunate enough to grow up in a time before parents (and this world) lost their minds. Because I remember playing outside. But not just bumping around in the yard. I remember riding my bike miles away from home. My brother and I would ride bikes to the store, the pool, the schoolyard (on weekends), and just about everywhere.

Sometimes we wouldn’t go home for hours.

We got to have what that aforementioned study called a “play-based childhood.” And the research, in that study, showed that “play and exploration are essential for what it means for us to thrive as human beings.” They also added that the best play time provides “the sort of unstructured freedom to independently encounter obstacles and problems. And overcome them.”

It certainly supports my belief that I’m much better off than kids these days. Because I got to play outside in a very unstructured way. Of course, we didn’t think of it as being able to “independently encounter obstacles and problems and overcome them.” We just thought of it as FUN.

I understand this world is more dangerous than ever for young kids. But I also understand that keeping kids locked up isn’t the solution. Keeping adults locked up (aka: in prison) isn’t the solution either.

Punish criminals. On three levels. Restitution. Corporal punishment. And capital punishment.

Do that. Make it sting. Make sure criminals suffer instead of kids and confused parents. It’s God’s way. I realize His way isn’t popular in this everybody-needs-to-acknowlege-and-understand-my-feelings day and age. But it’s the only way back to kids being able to safely play outside.

I’m Better Off

I think we can agree, I’m not better than you.
It isn’t very hard to believe that it’s true.
But let me say this now, and I hope you won’t scoff.
Though I’m not better than, I know I’m better off.

I’m better off,
If you say there is no Jesus and no Truth that ever frees us.
I’m better off,
If you say no bright tomorrow can erase all of your sorrow.
I’m better off.
For a multitude of reasons, an eternity of seasons.
I’m better off,
When I leave this dark theater, I’ll go live with the Creator.

So, I’m not better than any person who sins.
No, that’s an argument where no one ever wins.
But try to understand, and don’t grumble and cough,
When I say “trust the Lord“, and you’ll be better off.

Shadow of the moon is the name of this tune

I’ve seen some quotes, from professors to poets, who put today’s solar eclipse in its proper perspective. In one way or another they say what’ll happen is you’ll be “standing the shadow of the moon.”

Sure, some interesting things can happen in the shadow of the moon.

Temperatures drop. And crickets start chirping. And people in the “path of totality” can use special glasses to see the sun’s corona make a fiery circle around the moon. But jumpin’ Jiminy, it’s not a magic show. And it’s not even something from the magical mystery tour. So, pop open your own Corona (or cola or other beverage of choice) and relax.

Let’s not turn this into some sort of apocalyptic opening act.

I saw a short video that said 7 years ago another solar eclipse occurred across America. And that one passed over 7 towns named Salem. Now, this April 2024 eclipse will pass over 7 towns named Nineveh. And the video’s narrator pointed out that where the two paths crisscross is a town named Rapture.

Then, the narrator asked, “What is God telling us?” And he answered his own question with, “I am coming soon.”

Well, God mentioned almost that exact thing in the next to the last verse in the Bible with these words, “Surely I am coming quickly.” And that was two thousand years ago. Give or take a few years.

So, does that mean this month’s solar eclipse over America is NOT a sign of God’s return?

Nope.

But it doesn’t mean it IS a sign either.

Take what I say with (and as) a grain of salt.

And ALWAYS examine things in the Light of God’s word.

Standing in the shadow of the moon,
If the sky begins to sway and swoon,
There might be a twinkling of an eye
As some souls depart into the sky.
But there might be nothing of the sort,
No such odd occurrence to report.
Maybe it will be the age-old tune,
Just a simple shadow of the moon.

Goosebumps, a dream, and it wasn't a meme

What gives you goosebumps when you just think about it? Or is there anything that does that?

I’ll tell you something that gives me goosebumps like that.

And I dreamed about it recently. And I don’t tend to remember dreams very often. But this one was a blast. But, before I tell you what it was, I’ll share what a dimwit, uh, “physiologist and professor of zoology” from Canada said about goosebumps. (actually, I stand by the dimwit title) Here’s the quote I read on a so-called “scientific” website:

“Goosebumps are a physiological phenomenon inherited from our animal ancestors, which was useful to them but are not of much help to us. Goosebumps are tiny elevations of the skin that resemble the skin of poultry after the feathers have been plucked. (Therefore we could as well call them “turkeybumps” or “duckbumps.”) These bumps are caused by a contraction of miniature muscles that are attached to each hair. Each contracting muscle creates a shallow depression on the skin surface, which causes the surrounding area to protrude. The contraction also causes the hair to stand up whenever the body feels cold. In animals with a thick hair coat this rising of hair expands the layer of air that serves as insulation. The thicker the hair layer, the more heat is retained. In people this reaction is useless because we do not have a hair coat, but goosebumps persist nevertheless.”

OK, I freely admit I don’t know the dimwit’s, uh professor’s, family tree. So, maybe he DOES descend from turkeys. But, as time and observation have proved, throughout history, humans come from humans.

And to say goosebumps are “not of much help to us” is kinda childish.

Sure, humans have a much smaller amount of hair on our skin. But when it stands on end, it helps to conserve your body heat as it traps more air. And your muscles, connected to your goosebumps, help squeeze oil onto your skin. But those tiny hairs help prevent your oil glands from getting clogged. Plus, your muscle contractions (aka shivering) generate heat.

And there might not be so-called “scientific evidence” to back this up. But I believe those tiny hairs standing up on your skin can also be like your built-in radar detectors. Part of your ability to perceive something before you even see it.

Sounds like a mighty fine design to me. So, I’m glad “goosebumps persist nevertheless.”

Ok, that about does it for me at this time.

Oh yeah.

I almost forgot. I said I’d tell you about a recent dream. Yeah, I dreamed about the Rapture. Yes. THE Rapture. And it was an exhilarating dream. Elgielene and I heard a commotion outside. And when we went out to see what it was, there were people starting to hover above the ground. Some of them were shouting, “He’s here! This is it!”

Suddenly, Elgielene and were hovering too. And then, we all started flying up into the sky. It reminded me of how the skies looked when Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon blasted into hyperdrive. It was awesome.

I’m not sure if I woke up with goosebumps. But I did wake up filled with joy. And that’s even better.

God is great, and God is strong.
And He made all there is.
So don’t fear this fearful world.
Remember, child, you’re His.
If He says a thing is so,
Then you can bet it’s true.
Trust His promise to us all.
And trust Him to come through.

Your whole life here on earth is only the beginning. The fullness of eternity opens up to you, clearly, once you die. That’s the point of no return. Or, as the band, Kansas, said, the Point of Know Return.

Anyway…

If and when you choose to trust your Creator, you wouldn’t want to return anyway.

And when you see what’s in Heaven, I doubt seriously if you’ll have any longing in your heart for whatever you had here. Even if you had billions or even gazillions of pieces of moolah paper.

In your whole life, here, three things matter.

Family, friends, health. Those are the important things. Because they can’t be purchased. And you’ll have them with you wherever you are. And your connection to them can last forever. “Material things” aren’t like that.

Almost 41 years ago I wrote down my thoughts and composed a song about it. I started out the song with a double negative. It’s a little bit of poetic license. But see if you can figure out why I use it.

I recorded the song on a very cheap cassette recorder. Not even a 4-track. And I never really produced it. I still think it would be a good song to record. Hopefully I can get my voice back to some sort of decent recording quality. Until then, I’ll share the words with you. And you can tell me if you think I should do an updated recording. Leave a comment, or send me an email. Now, here are the lyrics to…

There’s A Time

You can’t hold on to nothing when you leave.
It’s only you He will receive,
And only you that means a thing.
So learn to love just who you are,
And though you may not be a star
You still can hear the angels sing.

There’s a time for rejoicing
Between the sunrise and the sunset.
There’s a time for your heart to be free from pain.
There’s a time for believing
This is only the beginning.
There’s a time when your spirit may seem so plain.
That’s when you’ll know
That you’re welcome to go.

You can’t make it to the other side
Till you’ve got nothing more to hide
‘Cause you can’t hide it from His eyes.
So try to learn from your mistakes,
And try to do just what it takes
To live your life away from lies.

(repeat chorus)

Don’t turn your head…
Don’t turn your head and walk away.
Your time just might be today.

No dark heart controls my art

Imagine, for a second or two, that you and I have the exact same basic needs. Food, water, shelter, clothes, emotional stability. I know it already sounds far-fetched. But hear (read?) me out. Of course, no dark heart will like it when I share the Truth. But you never can tell when one of those hearts might light up. So here’s what I mean.

Does one of those basic needs, I mentioned before, seem out of place compared to the others? If you said yes to emotional stability, you probably already understand where I’m going with this.

But I’ll make my point anyway. And then I have something else for you.

When something goes wrong, what’s your first reaction?

Panic? Anger? Or do you immediately start looking for the solution?

Well, I’ll share a little secret with you. Solutions are easier to find when you smile. I know, from personal experience, how  unhealthy it can be to mentally and verbally abuse yourself when things get rough. It can darken you down to your core.

But no dark heart can withstand the light of Truth.

When life fills up with obstacles and problems, you’re always faced with a choice. You can A: focus on solutions with joy in your heart. Or B: gripe and whine about the problems with a thundercloud around your head. Hint: choose A.

When you choose A, it’s amazing how things that once seemed too simplistic, and even childish, start to make a whole lot more sense. For example, instead of letting a dark heart keep you in a dark mood, do this. Whistle while you work.  You don’t need to be Snow White or any of the Seven Dwarfs to benefit from music.

If you’re not a good whistler, hum.

And if you don’t hum well, keep the rhythm.

If you’re not very rhythmic, then forget it. You’re a total loser.

Just kidding. Even if there’s not a musical bone or nerve in your body, you can be a stage manager. Or prop designer. Or even a curtain opener and closer. Yeah, you could even shine a spotlight on the performers. Because, then, you could be a part of the solution where…

There Ain’t No Dark

Pessimistic inclinations; oh statistical emotions.
Don’t try it, don’t buy it.
It won’t look good anyhow.
Problematic imperfections? Oh, they’re fishes in the oceans.
Just face it and erase it;
You could change the whole world now.

There ain’t no dark when you can see the light,
And there ain’t no black hole in your heart.
Prepare your eyes for the never-ending sunrise.
There ain’t no…there ain’t no…there ain’t no dark

Artificial revelation; oh perpetual solutions.
Don’t make ’em don’t take ’em; they won’t get you anywhere.
Symbolism over substance; wise up to that old pollution.
Take it higher; chase the liar; show the world you really care.

Chorus

No matter what they do or say,
You and I can win today.
Just live like there ain’t no…
‘Cause there really ain’t no dark.

(Lyrics, to a song I recorded on my own analog 4-track recording unit. It was during my songwriter journey in Nashville. You can hear the rough cut of it here: https://www.tonyfunderburk.com/see-the-light)

Eclipse day and what does it say?

You probably already know this. Because my readers and listeners are a bunch of smarty pants. But I’m gonna share it for the others who accidentally stumble into my Rhyme and Reason world. We have an eclipse day coming up in a few days, here in America. On April 8th. And I only know the date because of a reminder text I got early this morning.

I read some real interesting things about this particular eclipse day.

Now, I haven’t confirmed this information. But the source is generally trustworthy.

So, here’s what I got from them.

“This is the FIRST time since 1776, at the founding of the U.S., that a total solar eclipse has passed over ONLY the U.S. and no other country! This is the ONLY time that a total eclipse that only crosses the U.S. will pass over the entire nation from coast to coast. The next time the moon’s shadow only passes over the U.S. does not occur until January 25, 2316! The eclipse will touch all 3 major fault lines in the United States.”

Wow! Process all that data for a minute. Then, add this info. According to several sources I’ve seen, this next eclipse will pass over 8 or 9 cities or towns named Nineveh. And, for those of you who don’t know the Biblical significance of a city named Nineveh, trust me. It’s significant.

So, process all that data, and you must come to this inextricable conclusion.

There’s gonna be a solar eclipse next week.

Yeah, I think it’s all interesting.

But my focus isn’t on the moon, the stars or the sun. My focus is on the Son.

And He designed our sun in the sky approximately 400 times farther away from us than the moon. And He designed the sun to be approximately 400 times larger than the moon. And that’s precisely why we can so easily see a total eclipse of the sun every once in a while?

But why did Jesus do that? Does it really serve some metaphysical purpose? Or could it be that it just pleased Him to share this brilliant spectacle with us?

Well, think about how dead our planet would be if the moon was just a little farther away. And think about how tumultuous the oceans would be if it was closer. Yeah, it should be obvious it didn’t happen by chance. No, it was designed by God so the whole planet would be full of life and provide for us abundantly.

I could go on and on about how beautiful the design of life truly is. But I always recommend looking into it for yourself. I’ll be glad to talk with you about it, if you like. Even if we talk about it in the dark on eclipse day.

One great resource for the science part I highly recommend is a book called “In The Beginning” by Dr. Walt Brown. And here’s a poetic resource just for the kiddos…

There’s a moon in my room…

And the light is in my eyes.
It came in through the window
Just as soft as lullabies.
There’s a smile on its face
As it floats up on the wall.
I love the way it flitters
Without any sound at all.
And I’d love to fly up there,
With the moon, into the sky.
But the sandman just stopped in…
So, for now, I must say “bye.”

Perfect details in creatures with real squishy features

Once upon a time, jellyfish, and trillions of other marine life creatures, were buried alive in layers of sediment. And it happened so fast their bodies didn’t even have time to decompose and smell bad. And thousands of years later (yes, thousands) you can dig ’em up and see what they looked like in almost perfect details. It’s so amazing it almost sounds like I just made up this story.

But there are too many other stories with similar perfect details.

I’ve shared a bunch of those stories over the years. They’re all part of what a lot of people (including me) call creation science. And what I like about creation science is how it isn’t based on assumptions. Typical science assumes everything came into existence by random chance. And so, all observations in the physical world have to line up with that bias.

But that’s not how real science works.

About 10 years ago, as I added daily rhymes for kids to my website, I talked about jellyfish. And I asked this question, “Have you ever seen a jellyfish washed up on a beach?”

Then, I added a little touch of real science you can easily observe in a beached jellyfish. I didn’t dive into some peer reviewed page of perfect details. I just added this info and a short rhyme.

> If so, you know it doesn’t take them very long to start to decay and smell bad. If fossilized jellyfish were buried over hundreds of millions, or even just millions of years, their bodies would have decayed or faded away. They wouldn’t have stayed intact for all that time. To think so requires a faith greater than Noah or Abraham or David…and most certainly you and me.

So gang…look at the bright side of life and become a Christian. There are some wonderful side effects. You’ll get to live forever. And you’ll get to live in Paradise. You’ll meet God face to face one day. You’ll understand things about fossils that a lot of educated fools don’t. And you’ll never have to wonder how fossilized jellyfish can be found all over the world.

Jellyfish

Poor jellyfish, go make a wish
And sadly close your eyes.
Because this day you’ll pass away
And quickly fossilize.

I know it’s bad, but don’t be sad.
One day you will be found,
A work of art, not torn apart,
Squeezed into solid ground.

Lots of mankind will surely find
Your fossils there quite odd.
But ology can help us see
The mighty hand of God.

Happy Easter Day is the way we say what we say

Happy Easter. And I only say that to you if you believe in the real reason this holiday (Holy-day) exists. If you don’t believe, then you can have a terrible day for all I care.

“Ouch, Tony. That’s harsh.”

Oh, did I write that out loud. Sorry, not sorry.

OK, now that I’ve thinned out the readers, here’s a little Happy Easter backstory.

A small bunch of years ago I shared an explanation of why Christians celebrate Resurrection Day (aka: Easter). And I’m gonna share it again for the 99% of the world that didn’t see it the first time. Plus, I’ll share the famous Easter song, “The Way,” written by your favorite rhyme and reason rabble-rouser.

If you don’t need to be convinced, awesome. You can skip this explanation and head to the video, below. Either way, here ya go…

To outsiders, it sometimes looks like we’re celebrating a bloody murder. Nothing could be further from the truth, of course. Easter isn’t about death at all. Quite the opposite. Christians all around the world celebrate the fact (yes, I said “fact”) that about 2000 years ago God became man and suffered a horrible death in order to offer us eternal life. That man, Jesus, was mocked, ridiculed, persecuted, prosecuted, and executed by the very people He came to save.

It’s unimaginable the torment He suffered just so you and I could avoid eternal suffering. You can say it’s a fairy tale. But that doesn’t erase the Truth. You can say the story of Jesus was simply written by men with an agenda. But that only shows me you haven’t actually read the book. You can even say eternity doesn’t exist for anyone. But that reveals your personal agenda.

Resurrection Day is all about what happened after Jesus was killed.

He rose from the dead, and the Bible says He was the “firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.” Simply put…that means He’s tip-top and no other name or person can be or ever shall be higher. And that means He can (and does) offer His eternal life to anyone who will follow Him.

Every day I more clearly understand why Jesus said to follow Him you must hate your “father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters” and even your own life. People will always let you down, but Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you. That “hate” isn’t the kind you’re seeing tossed around the internet and media. Jesus was saying your love for Him needs to be so full that anything else is hate in comparison. When you understand He is the only way you’re ever gonna receive eternal life, I believe your love for Him will increase all the time.

So, don’t let the big, bad world, or even the people to your left or your right, rob you of your joy and your celebration of Resurrection Day 2024. Or, for that matter, any other day of life your Creator has given you. Would you do me a favor and send me a story of how you celebrated the day? I’ll share it here and on my The Power of God’s Love Podcast. And until then, here’s an Easter rhyme for you…

Happy Easter Day

There’s a story you might know
Of a man who was killed some time ago.
He did nothing that was wrong,
But some people made Him suffer for so long.

Still there’s good news you can learn
‘Cause He died to give you what you’ll never earn.
He was nailed up on a cross,
But the people didn’t understand the loss.

Then they took Him to a tomb,
And they laid His lifeless body in that room,
But the story didn’t end there.
There would only be three days He would spend there.

Happy Easter day…He arose!

Uncool as me? Is that what you see?

To see me now, it might be difficult to even imagine I was once considered part of the cool crowd. Not the smoke-dope-drop-ludes-party-till-you-drop crowd. But because I was a full-time musician that so-called “cool crowd” those people figured it was OK to have me around. Even though they discovered it’s difficult to find someone as uncool as me.

But the truth is, it’s preferable to be as uncool as me.

Not for most of the people on the planet, of course. But it IS preferable. Because my uncoolness is a sign I’ve made at least one wise choice in my life.

And that one wise choice was to believe in, trust in, and follow the One who most of the whole world chooses to ignore. The One who’s getting TONS of social media and traditional media coverage this week. Yeah, I’m talking about the ONLY One (not Neo) who can save you from, and dissolve, this matrix world.

This weekend marks the umpteenth time believers have acknowledged what Jesus did approximately 2000 years ago. And if you’re as uncool as me, it gives you chill bumps to imagine how eternity with Him will be.

I hope you’ve gotten your boarding pass to Heaven. It won’t cost you anything but humble heart. Because it’s already been paid for by the One who Resurrection Day is all about. If you don’t already have your ticket, don’t waste another minute. The train is about ready to leave the station. Don’t be left behind singin’ the song of…

The Uncool Fool

Every day seems a little bit shorter
And there never seems to be enough time.
Everyone is lookin’ for a reason,
So, I’ll tell you, it’s inside of this rhyme.

Every life plays a part in this journey,
Starting way down in a singular cell.
If you don’t have a clue what your part is,
Ask the only one who knows you so well.

Why am I here?
What should I do?
Why do I play the uncool fool, blindsided by the golden rule?
Where is my peace,
Long overdue?
These thoughts in my head are so cruel, bombarded by the uncool fool.

Every time you believe that you’re smarter
Take the mask off and then open your eyes.
You might have lots of facts in your head, but
Ask yourself these things and see if you’re wise.

Why am I here?
What should I do?
Why do I play the uncool fool, blindsided by the golden rule?
Where is my peace,
Long overdue?
These thoughts in my head are so cruel, bombarded by the uncool fool.

Good Friday is extra good when it's truly understood

This Sunday is known all around the world as “Easter Sunday” or “Resurrection Sunday.” And today is known as “Good Friday” to a whole lot of people. But those names don’t mean much to most people.

And that’s especially sad on Good Friday.

Because it’s the day that observes another day, about 2000 years ago, that looked anything but good for one man. In fact, things looked worse for him than any other person who ever lived.

First, he was accused of crimes he didn’t commit. Then, he was found innocent of those crimes. And then he was put to death for those crimes he didn’t commit. Wow! Talk about miscarriage of justice.

But we’re not talking about some run-of-the-mill-ordinary-joe-schmoe. Not just another street bum who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. No, we’re not talking about some schmuck outta luck. Good Friday wouldn’t and couldn’t apply to anyone as forgettable as all that.

Uh-uh. Good Friday gets its name because of what that man, Jesus, suffered in order to offer a free gift of grace to anyone who wants it. And “good” hardly seems adequate. Except when you remember that Jesus, Himself, said “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.”

So, given that perspective, you can see how the only good One was sufficient for the sacrifice that day.

And I can’t think of anything more pro life or life-affirming than to know there’s a living, loving God who cared so much for us that He suffered a horrible death to make eternal life available.

C’mon, man! Who wouldn’t wanna live forever?!

And who wouldn’t wanna be in a love-filled paradise forever. It’s certainly something I want. But so sad to say, millions and millions and millions of people don’t choose life. They choose to be their own king. Or queen. And they bet their eternal existence on their own selfish desires.

I hope you don’t believe that way,
That Good Friday’s just another day.
I hope you trust that, when you die,
You’ll live somewhere beyond the sky,
Somewhere you’ll be forever free,
In perfect love, eternally.
Because the One who knows your heart
Can change the broken, selfish part,
If you will only let Him in
And let His healing love begin
To resurrect your brokenness
Into His perfect faithfulness.
